Warriors win conference tournament

Willowbrook’s girls basketball team wrapped up its season by winning the championship in the West Suburban Conference Tournament. The Warriors won two tournament games at Morton High School’s west campus on Saturday. They defeated York 56-50 in a semifinal game. Willowbrook then beat Lyons Township 52-46 in the championship contest. The Warriors are pictured after their victory over the Lions.

Willowbrook avenged both of its regular-season losses on Saturday; the team’s only two losses came against York and Lyons Township. The Warriors won their last nine games to finish the shortened season with a record of 13-2. The West Suburban Conference’s 14 teams played exclusively against each other during the abbreviated season. Restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of the season for more than two months. The Warriors defeated Downers Grove South 59-33 on Friday to post a perfect 6-0 record against their rivals in the conference’s Gold Division. For more about the Warriors, see pages 14 and 17.

• Courses: The University anticipates offering the majority of cours-

• Student Experiences: Plans are to increase access to all campus dining operations and facilities,

• Safety Protocols: The University will continue to follow any federal, state and local health and safety guidelines that may still be in effect, including mask-wearing, physical distancing, testing protocols and gathering sizes. • Enhanced Financial Aid: Understanding the continuing impact of the pandemic on families and individual students, Elmhurst University will offer enhanced financial aid opportunities for the hardest-hit fami-

lies, as well as for incoming students who struggled with remote learning.

by Elmhurst University students, faculty and staff to following the rules and keeping each other safe, the University community experienced a remarkably low 1% positivity rate for those tested on campus in the Fall Term. Testing data continues to show a low incidence of COVID-19 on campus.

EEHealth offers COVID-19 virtual grief support sessions Edward-Elmhurst Health knows that over the past year, many people have suffered loss and are struggling with grief associated with losing someone to COVID-19. EEHealth want to help.

The hospital is now offering complimentary grief support groups specific to those struggling with the experience of losing a loved one to COVID-19. The experience of losing someone to COVID-19 is unique and specific. For this reason, these groups are open only to adults (18+) who have experienced COVID-19 related loss.

These support group sessions are held virtually using Zoom. In order to participate, you must have access to an electronic device with audio and video capability.

Support group sessions are facilitated by members of our Spiritual

Care Services team who are experienced in supporting those who have suffered loss.

Groups have a minimum of five people and a maximum of 10.

The support group sessions are 90 minutes long, held once per week and run for six weeks. Morning, mid-day and evening options are available.

American Rescue Plan allocates $50B in small business relief

Elmhurst University is planning a return to in-person, campus-based learning and living in the fall.

Based on the latest pandemic and vaccine rollout projections, and the low COVID-19 positivity rates the University has seen so far, Elmhurst will be prepared to welcome students back in August with a full array of on-campus courses and activities.

According to a release from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, United States President Joseph R. Biden on March 12 was scheduled to sign into law the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan federal relief package for individual, businesses and governmental bodies suffering the negative economic impact from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemics, including $14 billion to distribute vaccines.

The American Rescue Plan includes $50 billion in small business financial assistance, including $25B targeting small and mid-sized restaurants, and $7B more in forgiveness-eligible Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan funding for small businesses and not-for-profit organizations.

There also is an unemployment benefit boost of $300 per week (down from $400).

State and local governments will receive aid totaling $350B, and $130B is allocated to assist elementary, middle and high school in safely reopening classrooms for in-person learning.

The relief package includes provides for $1,400 stimulus check payments to individuals with an adjusted gross income of $75K or less (down from $100K and then $80K) based on Fiscal Year 2020 and/or FY 2019 federal income tax returns and an expanded tax credit from $3K to $3.6K per child to be distributed in monthly installments.

With support from a coalition that includes several area Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is urging the U.S. Congress to extend the PPP application deadline from March 31 through the end of 2021 (Dec. 31).

More than 10 percent of DuPage residents now fully vaccinated More than 271,684 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to DuPage County residents, and 177,631 residents have received at least one dose of vaccine as of today, March 10. Of those vaccinated, 94,053 people, or 10.13 percent of DuPage County residents, are fully vaccinated. This represents the administration of 59,049 doses of vaccine in the past week to DuPage County residents.

Last week, DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) received 15,330 first doses of COVID-19 vaccines. From this allocation, 4,710 doses were distributed to medical

practices, 200 doses were distributed to Federally Qualified Health Centers, 5,680 doses were distributed to hospitals, 600 doses were distributed to pharmacies, 1,500 doses were distributed to commercial vaccination service providers, 300 doses were distributed to urgent care providers, and 2,340 doses are supplying the DCHD Community Vaccination Clinic. Additional county-specific vaccine data, including first dose allocations by week and allocations by provider type, are available on the COVID-19 Dashboard at the DCHD web site.

es allocated to DuPage County this week, retail pharmacies including Jewel, Mariano’s, and Walgreens are receiving approximately 13,600 doses this week directly from state and federal sources.

“In spite of the relatively low volume of vaccine coming to DCHD and our provider network, we are effectively moving through the current Phase 1b priority groups,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department.

“Even with that, unless you’ve been successful in scheduling or receiving a vaccine, there is a sense of frustration. We understand that and contin-

ue to advocate for more doses of this lifesaving vaccine. We will soon be announcing our timeline for transitioning into the 1b Plus population and want to assure people in the 1b groups that we will continue to target getting vaccine to you first. Let’s please keep this positive momentum going so we can continue to prevent illness and save lives.”

While progress is being made on the overall vaccination efforts, DCHD is closely monitoring reports of variants in our local communities.

To date, DCHD has received confirmation of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 detected in three DuPage

County residents. Across Illinois, 85 cases have been reported, as of Mar. 9. This variant has been found to spread more easily than other variants. In January 2021, experts in the U.K. reported that this variant may be associated with an increased risk of death compared to other variant viruses, but more studies are needed to confirm this finding. It has since been detected in many countries around the world. This variant was first detected in the U.S. at the end of December 2020. State’s attorney files charges against five individuals alleging voter fraud On Tuesday, March 9, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that his office had filed charges against five individuals accused of various charges related to election fraud in the 2020 general election. The charges are the result of investigations conducted by the State’s Attorney’s Office into 32 cases of alleged election fraud. While most of those cases have been closed without charges, several remain under investigation.

“I would like to thank County

Clerk Jean Kaczmarek and her office for their fine work in uncovering these alleged violations and bringing them to our attention,” Berlin said. “The charges filed today are the direct result of the cooperation and professionalism displayed by the Clerk’s Office throughout the entire investigation.”

This morning, Judge Michael Fleming issued a $1,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant for each of the following defendants.

• Adam P. Butler, 51, of Lisle, charged with one count of Forgery and one count of Perjury in Election Code. Both charges are a Class 3 Felony.

• Thomas E. Wojciechowski, 73, of Carol Stream, charged with one count of Perjury in Election Code, a Class 3 Felony.

• Colleen A. Kirchoff, 60, of Naperville, charged with Forgery and Perjury in Election Code. Both Charges are a Class 3 Felony.

• Darrick Kent, 43, of Austin,

Tex., charged with one count of Perjury in Election Code, a Class 3 Felony.

• Amy Kent, 41, of Austin, Tex., charged with one count of Perjury in Election Code, a Class 3 Felony.

Of the five cases, three (Butler, Wojciechowski and Kirchoff) allege that the defendant attempted to cast a ballot for someone other than themselves. The other two cases (Derrick and Amy Kent) allege that the defendant claimed that they had lived at a DuPage County address

for 30 days or more prior to the election when in fact they had not.

“The very foundation of our country is built upon fair and free elections,” Berlin said. “Elections are a sacred duty and while the five defendants charged today represent an infinitesimal percentage of the 491,067 votes cast in the 2020 general election, it is important that anyone suspected of attempting to interfere in any way in the election process be investigated and charged where appropriate.”

Andres Mendivil, the owner of Villa Park’s Mariscos Miramar Restaurant, presented a donation of $1,740 to Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 on Saturday, March 13.

“This was out of the village’s graciousness to reduce our liquor license fee for 2021,” said Mendivil, whose restaurant is located at 31 W. North Avenue. “I didn’t have a terrible business year [in 2020]. I wanted to try to find an organization that didn’t have the luck that I did.”

Mendivil contacted Alesia Bailey, the executive director of the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce, to recommend where he might make his donation. Bailey suggested VFW Post 2801, which is located at 39 E. St. Charles Road.

Mendivil, who has been in business in Villa Park for 10 years, thanked his customers for helping his restaurant deal with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

customers did most of the job,” Mendivil said. “We were very restrained for four or five months. As soon as things began to open up a little, we had a good influx of customers. It wasn’t a terrible business year. I thought that somebody else deserved the support that the village was trying to bring to us.”

Jim Blankshain, the commander of VFW Post 2801, thanked Mendivil for the donation.

“We really appreciate what everybody in the community has done for us,” Blankshain said. “If it wasn’t for that support, I don’t know how we would have made it through the year, because we did have a rough year.”

The post has been unable to hold its customary revenue generating events—including fish frys, bingo nights and banquets—during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’d hate to see this VFW post close,” said Blankshain while thanking Mendivil for his donation. “The support from you and the community has really helped us out.”

April 15 is just around the corner, and while filing income taxes is often a process that we’d prefer not having to go through every year—often putting it off until the last minute—there is someone in our area who makes tax season fun and a little easier to endure. Whether you do most of your driving in Villa Park or Lombard, you’ve undoubtedly seen him standing outside the Liberty Tax Service office—one located in the 100 block of E. St. Charles Road in Villa Park; the other in 300 block of S. Main in Lombard—dressed in a Statue of Liberty costume, waving at passers-by and often utilizing a prop (on this particular day, strumming a mandolin). Perhaps you’ve either honked or waved at him as you’ve driven by … or at the very least, he’s put a smile on your face. Well, the fellow who daily dons that Statue of Liberty costume is Villa Park resident Steve Parks. Parks says he’s been playing the role of the Statue of Liberty for Liberty Tax Service each tax season since 2010. He’s out at either location in all kinds of weather; including those rough weeks in February when snow and sub-zero temperatures were the norm. He splits his time between the two Liberty locations six days (40 hours) per week over a six-week period. This year, Parks assumed the role of the Statue of Liberty on Jan. 18 and will continue until April 15, which lands on a Thursday. Usually, he said, people who drive by honk. “They like to see the Statue of Liberty washing windows and shoveling snow (outside the office),” he said with a smile.

Clara Ellen Craft, 90 Clara Ellen Craft, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, died peacefully at home in Villa Park on March 3, 2021.

Clara lived 90 years and was devoted to her loving husband John, seven children, 19 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Clara was born to Eunice M. (Robinson) and Frank L. Adrian in Champaign, Illinois on April 8, 1930. She was raised near Danville, IL with her brother Dr. Frank (Gene) and sisters, (Eunice) Jane and (Phebe) Kay. Clara fondly remembers her upbringing on her parents’ farm which formed her affinity for animals, domesticity, and inquisitiveness about life.

Clara was an incredible woman.

She graduated from the University of Illinois in Science and Nutrition as a Dietitian. Clara met the love of her life of 64 years in college, Lewis John Craft of Clayton, Illinois who graduated as an engineer and eventually became a lawyer. They wed September 4, 1949 and moved to the Villa Park, IL area where they worked, served their community and church and designed the home where they raised 7 children.

Clara was a dietitian at Cook

County and Hines VA Hospitals. After becoming a full-time mother, she still volunteered her expertise to help create healthy menus kids would love at the elementary school and the church camp kitchen. She worked alongside John as his real estate secretary, prior to retiring at 68 years of age.

When she wasn’t working, she volunteered as a 4-H leader and an officer of the West Suburban Dietetic Association. She was a charter member of the Christian Church of Villa Park where she served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder.

Clara was dedicated to the idea that one should live life as an example to others.

Clara was an avid gardener. She tended to an expansive flower rock garden and she grew vegetables every summer. Her love of nature extended to bird watching and caring for wildlife too. The home Clara designed herself was as welcoming as she was. Her warm spirit and open-minded curiosity enveloped everyone with acceptance and kindness; it filled her life with an exciting bevy of people and experiences.

Most importantly, her unconditional love gave her a beautifully diverse family with endless talents who cherished her. Clara was inten-

University hosts panel discussion on diversity, entrepreneurship Entrepreneurs who represent diverse identities are changing the face of leadership as more startups embrace diversity and inclusion in many aspects of what they do.

On Wednesday, March 24, the Elmhurst University E-celerator will host the panel discussion “Why Does Diversity in Entrepreneurship Matter?” During this virtual event, a panel of successful entrepreneurs will explore why diversity among entrepreneurs is important; its impact on businesses and organizations; and the obstacles faced by entrepreneurs with diverse identities.

March 5 Thomas E. Ventresca, 38, of St. Charles, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, other drug/any amount in the 200 block of E. Roosevelt Nov. 10, 2020. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued March 5.

A 22-year-old Berkeley woman was charged with violation of domestic violence bail bond (bond amount to be set at bond court) on Feb. 16. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued March 5.

Criminal damage to property was reported in the 1500 block of S. Ardmore at around 12:33 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect cut off the catalytic converter on a vehicle that was left unoccupied and parked in a parking lot. The catalytic converter was left behind.

Firefighter/ paramedic receives his badge

Villa Park firefighter/paramedic Jake Furtak recently completed his one-year probationary period with the Villa Park Fire Department. Furtak’s family and colleagues joined him at his badge ceremony at the Villa Park Village Board meeting on March 8. A Villa Park resident, Furtak grew up in the village, attending Albright Middle School and Willowbrook High School. “I’m thrilled to be here and proud to work in the community I grew up in,” said Furtak after the ceremony. Prior to joining the Villa Park Fire Department, Furtak spent eight years with the Oakbrook Terrace Fire Protection District.

His father Frank was a paid oncall firefighter in Villa Park for 21 years. Frank Furtak pinned the Villa Park Fire Department badge on his son during last week’s ceremony.

Trump as its leader puts GOP in a quandary

By Jim Nowlan The coffee klatch at Julie’s Café Market asks: What’s going to happen in American politics over the next few years, now that Trump has declared he plans to be the leader of the Republican Party? Here is my take.

In sum, the Republican Party will survive, if at all, as a distinct minority party, so long as Trump continues being Trump. That is, Trump refracts every action, absolutely every one, through the prism of how it affects the world’s view of him, not of how actions affect a political party’s fortunes. Not a way to run a party.

Trump has a base of about 3035 percent of the electorate, largely outside urban areas. His backers are passionately committed to him as an individual, not to him as a party leader. Unfortunately for him, a similar slice of the electorate, or maybe a bit larger, is opposed to him with comparable intensity. And many of the rest, who are neither for nor against Trump, find him and his actions distasteful.

For the coming election cycle, I expect Trumpers to win both primaries and general election races in rural and small-town America. In the vote-rich suburbs, however, Trumpers and antiTrump candidates will square off in many GOP primaries.

Should a Trumper win a suburban primary, he or she will often lose the general election, as many women there find The Donald objectionable.

Should the anti-Trumper win the primary, the Trumpers will often not vote for him or her in the general, ceding the election to the Dem. This will thus result in a reduction in legislative seats for the GOP at both the state and national levels.

Looking ahead to 2024, Trump will likely win the GOP nod for the presidency, yet once again his base will be insufficient to win the Oval Office.

On the Democrat side, Joe Biden will be 82 in November of 2024.

I think he will step aside for Vice President Kamela Harris, who votes liberal yet comes across as a suburban professional.

All the above assumes for my analysis that the Democrats will not shoot themselves in their collective Big Toe along the way. Take inflation, for example.

An enduring weakness of democracies has always been the tendency of politicians to promise to do for voters (spend money) and not do to them (tax voters to pay for

the spending). This results in budget deficits.

To wit: The present spending binge

by Dems in D.C. comes on top of the GOP’s $2 trillion tax cut in 2017, which itself was painted over wholly with red ink. I was taught in college that if the money supply goes up sharply without a comparable increase in the supply of goods, there will be inflation, possibly of the runaway sort.

Think Argentina, the Weimar Republic in post-World War I Germany, and in undisciplined democracies around the world. Many economists here say, tsk-tsk, not to worry in the U.S.; some others say: worry.

After a Trump loss in 2024, the GOP would be shattered. Without Trump and his base, the Grand Old Party would represent 20-25 percent of the electorate.

In the interim between now and post-election 2024, anti-Trump Republicans will be rallied by the likes of U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) and his Country First political committee. Kinzinger has a positive, uplifting, but unspecific message. Can the likes of the 42-yearold Kinzinger arouse passion? I am hopeful.

Kinzinger appears to have burned his bridges with the GOP in Illinois, with some dismissive remarks he made about local GOP leaders. So, will he transform fledgling Country First into a new party? I have written elsewhere that there is space for a new party, but the challenge of getting one up and running is daunting, and would take two or more election cycles.

The nation may be in for a decade or more of one-party Democratic Party rule, much like the DemocraticRepublicans’ lopsided majorities in Congress from 1800 to 1824.

What our nation needs, in my humble opinion, is a secular Great Awakening. In the 18th Century, emotional preachers brought people to their feet and onto their knees across our new nation.

The disconnect is that the 18th Century phenomenon didn’t require pain and sacrifice; indeed revivalists offered a pathway to salvation through faith alone. In contrast, a 21st Century “Awakening” will require broad pain and sacrifice to straighten out our country, its finances and competitiveness. A tall order for Americans, used to the good life, where political parties find spending more successful than challenging us.

JCAR and you: How a rule becomes a law in Illinois

By Roger Eddy Beginning on Jan. 1, 1978, an important process became law that very few people know about and even fewer people understand.

But the Illinois Administrative Procurement Act affects your everyday life in a very real way, especially lately.

It subjects you to rules written by unelected officials that eventually are acted upon by a small group of elected officials called the Joint Committee on Administrative rules, or JCAR. It’s processes, however, were not included in the “Schoolhouse Rock” version of “How a Bill Becomes a Law.” The act defines the authority and establishes a process by which state agencies in Illinois make rules to implement the intent of laws passed by the General Assembly. There are dozens of state agencies, board and commissions in Illinois, many of which hover over our everyday lives. Examples include the Illinois Departments of Public Health, Revenue, Corrections, Agriculture, Children and Family Services, Human Services, Military Affairs, Veterans’ Affairs, State Police, State Board of Education, and the list goes on and on.

You get the idea.

Central Management Services (CMS) is the state agency that is supposed to oversee these entities. On the CMS website, it is noted there are more than 80 of these bodies. Most have rule-making authority.

According to the Procurement Act, state agencies take over where lawmakers leave off after a bill is passed and signed into law by the governor. The rules they set are

supposed to carry through the intent of the legislation, which created the authority for a specific state agency.

There must be underlying legislation that can be cited for which the rulemaking authority is granted.

Often, when I was a member of the House, I would scan the hundreds of bills proposed to look for the words, “subject to rule making authority.”

When I saw those words, I knew that I was voting to yield some of my duty as a lawmaker to an unelected bureaucratic agency of the state. I also understood this authority could last forever or until a new law repealed it.

Not often was there discussion about the intent and limitations of the rule-making authority being granted in the legislation. Keep in mind, these rules, once promulgated, have the effect of law and are enforceable by the executive branch. When Rod Blagojevich was governor, he refused to follow some of the rules and called JCAR “advisory.” The Illinois Supreme Court ruled otherwise when a pair of GOP operatives took Blagojevich to court. The court upheld the authority of JCAR as created by the 1978 Procurement Act. Since these rules, written and proposed by bureaucracies and enforceable as law, can have a major effect on your life, you might wonder what this promulgation process entails.

The process of promulgation could be the subject of a full-length course.

In short, the process begins with the rule being written by a state agency, board or commission granted that authority in legislation. The drafting of the proposed rule is not subject to public input. However, it then must be posted twice for public review and comment. The first notice must be published in something called the Illinois Register for at least 45 days.

The second period is also 45 days and can include changes made to the rule.

A third period of 45 days can also be added under certain circumstances. It can take up to a year in rare cases.

Eventually, the proposed rule is sent to JCAR for final action. JCAR is a quasi-legislative bipartisan panel of 12 elected officials—six Democrats and six Republicans appointed by the leaders of each of the four caucuses representing the Senate and House.

They review the rule and determine whether it meets the requirement of being within the authority provided in the underlying statute or if it oversteps the authority granted.

JCAR can approve the rule with a Certificate of No Objection, make recommendations for changes, object, or issue a Filing Prohibition/ Suspension. If the rule is approved with a Certificate of No Objection, the agency adopts the rule and files it with the secretary of state. It then becomes enforceable. A JCAR declaration of Prohibition or Suspension is a determination that the proposed rule is a threat to the public interest, safety or welfare. Then, by a three-fifths vote JCAR can prohibit the filing of the proposed rule.

All of this has come to light recently when high-profile rules passed by the Department of Public Health and State Board of Education have come under scrutiny. As a lawmaker, I was always concerned with the authority that the General Assembly punted to state agencies and JCAR. Lately, maybe the public is also becoming concerned?

Warriors finish unique season with a tournament title Team wins its last nine games to end the year with a 13-2 record

The Willowbrook girls basketball team completed its abbreviated season with a championship performance.

The Warriors won a pair of games on Saturday to claim the title in the season-ending West Suburban Conference Tournament. Willowbrook avenged both of its regular-season losses in the day’s two games at Morton High School’s west campus in Berwyn.

In their first game on Saturday, the Warriors beat York 56-50 in a semifinal contest. That victory over the Dukes propelled Willowbrook into the event’s championship game against Lyons Township. The Lions defeated Glenbard West in Saturday’s other semifinal game.

The Warriors rallied to beat Lyons Township 52-46 in the championship battle, which was played in a nearly empty gym. No spectators were allowed.

“The girls came to play,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell, whose team tipped off its game against York at 5 p.m. After a brief rest, the Warriors and Lions began the championship clash at 7 p.m.

“They were tired, but they turned right around and played extremely hard in the second game,” Harrell added.

Freshman Calli Kenny scored a

team-leading 22 points for the Warriors in the championship game.

Senior Taris Thornton provided 10 points. Junior Sophie Sullivan scored seven of her nine points during the fourth quarter. She sank five of six free-throw attempts during the final period.

“I just knew I that I had to come out here and play for our seniors,” said Kenny after the victory over the Lions. “We knew it was the seniors’ last game, so we gave it everything we had.”

Two of those seniors—Stephanie Dasbach and Gracie Tumilty—both provided five points in the win over Lyons Township. Dasbach’s threepoint play broke a 41-41 tie and gave the Warriors a 44-41 lead with 2:57 to play.

Freshman Elle Bruschuk scored one point with a second-period free throw. Bruschuk also supplied a key defensive play when she blocked a Lyons Township shot with less than 20 seconds remaining.

The Warriors finished their season with a 13-2 record. Willowbrook won its final nine games. The team’s season began with a 51-50 loss at York on Feb. 12. Willowbrook won its next four games before dropping a 57-48 decision to Lyons Township in Villa Park on Feb. 24. The Warriors proceeded to reel off nine straight wins, including four games in the 14-team conference tournament. Willowbrook opened that event with wins over Hinsdale Central and Proviso West on March 6. Those two wins sent the

The Lions controlled the regular-season meeting with the Warriors on Feb. 24, building a 37-17 halftime lead. Willowbrook cut into the lead during the second half of that game, but never pulled any closer than nine points during the final two periods.

Lyons Township took an early 7-0 lead over the Warriors in Saturday’s rematch. Thornton then scored five straight points to cut the Lions’ lead to 7-5. Lyons Township closed the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 13-5 lead at the end of the opening period.

The Lions held a 21-10 lead midway through the second period.

Tumilty contributed a burst of four points in the quarter to cut Lyons Township’s lead to 23-16. Kenny’s nine-point spark in the period included a 3-point shot that cut the Lions’ lead to 26-19. Lyons Township led Willowbrook 26-21 at halftime.

Kenny added nine more points in the third quarter. One of her baskets cut Lyons Township’s lead to 33-30.

Moments later, another field goal from Kenny trimmed the lead to 33-32. Sullivan’s basket with about 15 seconds to play in the period gave the Warriors their first lead of the game—a 34-33 advantage that they held going into the fourth quarter.

Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas introduced himself to some village residents during last week’s Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) quarterly meeting at the Community Recreation Building at 320 E. Wildwood Ave. Rivas has been the village’s police chief since December 2020. “I feel very blessed to be the chief of police,” Rivas told the audience. “I’ve always liked solving problems, and I joined a group of people who also love doing the very same thing.” Rivas told the residents at the meeting that they are the eyes and ears of the community. He warned them that as the weather gets warmer, they may receive visits from scam artists who offer to provide some type of home repair work. Rivas told residents to call the police to report those visits. Additionally, Rivas told residents they should never give out any personal information over the phone to unknown callers. Two other guests at last week’s meeting were Villa Park Police Officer Matt Rol vel Rul and the department’s K-9 officer—Luke. Rol vel Rul is Luke’s handler. Luke, a German shepherd who joined the department in June 2020, works and lives with Rol vel Rul. “He’s with me 24/7,” the officer told the audience. Rol vel Rul added that Luke is a dual-purpose K-9 officer who is trained in narcotics detection and patrol. In addition to detecting narcotics, Luke’s duties include tracking criminals and people who are missing. Luke is also trained to track various articles. Those articles could include weapons that a suspect might discard while being pursued by police.

Dasbach’s three-point play gave Willowbrook its 44-41 lead—a lead it would maintain for the rest of the game. Sullivan’s driving basket with just under two minutes to play bumped the lead to 46-41. Sullivan made one free throw with 1:08 remaining to complete a 10-0 run and give the Warriors a 47-41 advantage.

The Lions made a 3-point shot to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 47-44. Sullivan made four free throws in the final minute, including two shots with 11.2 seconds on the clock. Tumilty made one free throw with 19.1 seconds to play.

Sullivan and Thornton both scored 20 points in Saturday’s semifinal victory over York. Thornton, who made eight of 11 free-throw attempts, also contributed 14 rebounds. Sullivan, who drained three 3-point shots, sank seven of 10 shots from the foul line.

Kenny scored five points against the Dukes, while Tumilty and Bruschuk both scored four points. Dasbach provided three points and a team-leading 15 rebounds.

Willowbrook held a 17-10 lead over York after the first quarter. The Warriors led the Dukes 29-23 at halftime. York grabbed a 40-36 lead by the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors completed a perfect 6-0 record against West Suburban Gold Conference opponents on Friday, when they traveled to Downers Grove South and earned a 59-33 win.

Thornton scored 17 points for Willowbrook, which built a 33-19 halftime lead. Bruschuk and Dasbach scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Warriors played one game against each of their West Suburban Gold rivals during the shortened season. The Warriors beat those rivals— Addison Trail, Proviso East, Leyden, Hinsdale South, Morton and Downers Grove South—by an average of 33 points. The closest margin of victory in those six games was 24 points—a 57-33 win over Addison Trail on Feb. 19.

The unique season, delayed and shortened (Willowbrook played 29 games during the 2019-20 campaign, going 15-14) by the COVID-19 pandemic, with no state series, almost didn’t happen. In early January, with all IHSA winter sports on hold, it seemed no one knew if the state’s high school boys and girls basketball teams would be allowed to play any games during the current school year.

“A couple of months ago, we were having Zoom workouts, and we were just trying to hold the girls together,” recalled Harrell. “Then the [COVID-19] numbers turned, and we got to get on the court, and the girls had a lot of excitement. I was happy to have the opportunity to coach them.”

Willowbrook began its final week of the season with a 67-48 home win over Hinsdale Central on March 9.

Thornton and Tumilty both scored 12 points for the Warriors, who held a 35-27 lead at halftime and a 51-33 advantage after three quarters. Sullivan provided 11 points, while Dasbach contributed 10 points. Kenny and Bruschuk added nine and seven points, respectively. See photos on page 17.

Warriors wrap up season with a victory over Leyden 36-point third-quarter explosion highlights Saturday’s win over the Eagles

The Willowbrook boys basketball team concluded its season with a pair of home games on Saturday. In their first game, the Warriors lost 74-66 to Downers Grove South. Willowbrook ended the day on a winning note by defeating Leyden 84-68.

The Warriors finished their abbreviated season with an overall record of 3-11.

Saturday’s pair of games were part of the 14-team West Suburban Conference Tournament. The Warriors played their first two games of that event on March 6 at Addison Trail.

Willowbrook began the tournament with a loss to Lyons Township. The Warriors won their second game on March 6, beating Addison Trail.

Saturday’s game against Downers Grove South was the Warriors’ second matchup against the Mustangs in less than 24 hours. The two teams met in Friday’s regular-season game in Villa Park. Downers Grove South earned a narrow 66-63 win in that contest.

The Mustangs led the Warriors 53-43 with 6:45 to play in Friday’s game. Willowbrook rallied to take a 57-56 lead with 3:35 remaining.

Downers Grove South regained the

lead and held on to earn the victory. Willowbrook sophomore Noah Campbell, who made two 3-point shots during the fourth quarter, missed a shot from 3-point range at the buzzer.

Campbell connected on five 3-point shots during the game and scored a team-high 23 points in Friday’s loss. Senior Amaris Hughes and junior Marquel Saleek both scored 13 points, while junior Terrell Walker provided 10 points.

“Our kids could have very easily packed it in,” said Willowbrook coach Ryan Tyszkiewicz after Friday’s game. “They didn’t. They came out and turned up the pressure.

I’m very proud of the kids. They battled. They gave it 110 percent.”

Saleek’s three-point play cut Downers Grove South’s lead to 5346 with 6:20 left in Friday’s game.

Campbell’s first 3-point shot of the quarter cut the lead to 55-49 with about 5:20 remaining. His next 3-pointer sliced the lead to 55-52 with 4:30 to play.

A driving basket from Hughes cut the Mustangs’ advantage to 55-54.

Saleek’s 3-point shot gave the Warriors a 57-56 lead with 3:35 remain-

ing. Downers Grove South regained the lead about 10 seconds later.

The Mustangs pushed their lead to 62-57, but Campbell’s running basket pulled the Warriors to within 6259 with 1:30 left.

Hughes scored to cut Downers Grove South’s lead to 64-61 with one minute to play. Saleek’s basket dropped the lead to 65-63 with 35 seconds left.

Downers Grove South scored the game’s final point on a free throw with 7.4 seconds remaining. Hughes tried and missed a last-second 3-point shot. The ball went out of bounds, with possession to the Warriors with eight-tenths of a second on the clock.

Campbell caught the inbounds pass and missed a desperation 3-point attempt that could have sent the game into overtime.

Downers Grove South held a 23-7 lead after one quarter of Saturday’s rematch. The Warriors cut the Mustangs’ lead to 32-23 by halftime.

Willowbrook junior Alexander Simmons scored a team-leading 17

points in Saturday’s loss to Downers Grove South. Saleek and Walker scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Warriors erupted during the third quarter of their season finale against Leyden. The Eagles led Willowbrook 38-26 at halftime. The Warriors outscored Leyden 36-8 in the third period to grab a 62-46 advantage.

Walker scored 19 points in the win over the Eagles. Campbell added 17 points, while Saleek supplied 14 points.

While the Warriors struggled to win games during the abbreviated season, Tyszkiewicz noted the joy and gratitude they felt for having an opportunity to play. A couple of months ago, it looked like the entire season might be canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You can just see with the guys on the floor in practice, in the game, just being around each other, being together, being a team, it really does show how much they appreciate it,” Tyszkiewicz said.

Willowbrook’s girls basketball team wins conference title Willowbrook’s girls basketball team ended its season by winning the title in the 14team West Suburban Conference Tournament. The Warriors won two games on Saturday at Morton High School’s west campus.

They beat York 56-50 in a semifinal game.

They then defeated Lyons Township 52-46 in the tournament’s championship game.

Freshman Calli Kenny (No. 35-left) scored a team-high 22 points in the title contest. Senior Taris Thornton (No. 25-bottom left) added 10 points. Senior Stephanie Dasbach (No. 30-right), provided five points, including a three-point play that gave the Warriors a 4441 lead with less than three minutes to play.

Dasbach is pictured while making the basket that broke the 41-41 tie. She then sank a free throw to complete the three-point play. Willowbrook won the last nine games of its season to finish the campaign with a 13-2 record. The Warriors’ only two losses came against the two teams they beat on Saturday—York and Lyons Township. Willowbrook went 6-0 in its games against each of its six rivals in the West Suburban Conference’s Gold Division.
