White extending driver’s license and In my opinion Return of congressional town ID card expiration dates until July 31 Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits are being extended until July 31.

The previous extension was set to end on March 31. As a result, expired driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits will remain valid until July 31, so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during inclement weather. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

White’s office has expanded online renewals for expired driver’s licenses and ID cards and continues to mail letters to eligible customers.

The letter provides driver’s license and ID card holders with a unique PIN needed to renew online instead of visiting a facility and waiting in line. Customers may call 217-7851424 to confirm their eligibility for online renewal or to obtain their PIN.

Customers who must visit a facility include first-time driver’s license or ID card applicants, first-time REAL ID applicants and drivers ages 75 and older who are required by state law to visit a facility when renewing their license.

White continues to encourage people to conduct other business online at ilsos.gov. In addition to driver’s license and ID card renewals for those who qualify, online services include obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, ordering a driver record and purchasing license plate stickers.

White noted his office is also extending the expiration dates of Restricted Driving Permits (RDPs) to July 31 for those that expired on or after Dec. 1, 2021 through July 30, 2022.

As a reminder, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

County joins coalition opposed to railroad merger The DuPage County Board voted recently to join a coalition of communities that are opposing the merger of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Kansas City Southern Company.

In October 2021, Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern Company filed an application with the Surface Transportation Board seeking authorization for the Canadian Pacific Railway to acquire the Kansas City Southern Company.

The proposed merger would directly impact residents and businesses in the northern parts of the County. Several communities have already joined the Coalition to Stop CPKC, including Bartlett, Bensenville, Hanover Park, Itasca, Roselle, and Wood Dale.

“This merger would impact the quality of life for nearly 150,000 DuPage County residents,” said DuPage County Chairman Dan Cro-

nin. “In addition, there are potential impacts on residential and commercial property values in the area, negatively affecting economic development and stability. We cannot support this merger as proposed.”

“This plan would more than triple the number of freight trains that come through these communities, leading to longer traffic delays and increased noise and emissions,” said DuPage County Transportation Committee Chairman Don Puchalski.

The Canadian Pacific Railway operates an average of three freight trains per day, which travels across 18 street crossings within DuPage County, and supports Metra’s Milwaukee District West commuter rail service.

The County Board also authorized up to $100,000 to assist the coalition’s efforts to protect County residents and the County’s economic stability.

Several years ago, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute was invited to join a dozen universities in the United States to promote bipartisan collaboration and productive discourse at the state and local level.

The Institute developed a plan to strengthen how congressional town hall meetings are conducted in Illinois.

Our recommendations outlined ways these meetings could be more informative, civil, respectful and productive.

We sent our ideas to members of the Illinois congressional delegation and received encouraging responses. Then COVID-19 descended in 2020 and disrupted all our lives. In-person town hall meetings seemed ill-advised and unsafe during a pandemic.

Even if COVID-19 had not battered our world, we were aware that in-person town halls are threatened by other pervasive and pernicious diseases in the United States—the rise in political polarization, the decline of civility, and the atrophy of our collective ability as Americans to discuss contentious issues constructively, without rancor or acrimony.

The twin maladies of COVID-19 and political polarization upended in-person town hall meetings in Illinois and elsewhere.

The institute is not giving up on its conviction that town hall meetings are an important instrument to revive our democracy.

Congressional town hall meetings have been an important feature of America’s culture of representative democracy for more than two centuries. In their ideal form, they allow lawmakers to describe their work at home and in Washington and to listen to the con-

cerns of their constituents. Open and vigorous dialogue benefits policymakers and the public.

However, the nature of the town hall meeting has changed dramatically in the last decade or so, driven by deepening political polarization and advances in technology, especially the revolution of social media.

Both conservative and liberal activist groups often regard town hall meetings as opportunities to confront lawmakers they oppose and create embarrassing moments that can be captured on camera and then disseminated through social media. Even before COVID-19, many in Congress began to hold only virtual town hall meetings in which constituents attended via phone, internet or Zoom. These meetings are often tightly controlled and often fuel public anger and skepticism about the political process.

Paul Simon powerfully summarized the value of in-person town hall meetings: “It’s one thing to read about the farm problem, much different to talk to flesh-and-blood people whose agony is written on their faces and in what they say,” he wrote. “It’s one thing to know unemployment statistics, another to talk to a mother who is worried about the mental health of her son because he can’t find a job. The people who took time to attend town meetings held in every corner of the state helped me to become a better senator.”

The institute believes that in-person town hall meetings can again become a constructive part of our political discourse. However, we urge lawmakers and the public to approach them differently. Civility must be the coin of the realm. Town hall meetings should be restructured as listening and learning sessions that center on lawmakers hearing the views of constituents. They should be moderated by a nonpartisan community leader who sets the tone for a respectful discussion. The range of people who attend town halls should be widened so the audience is more diverse and includes both partisans and independents.

There is no magic solution to rescue and revive town hall meetings. Success ultimately depends on the goodwill and respect of both the public and policymakers.

As we approach the spring of 2022, there are cautious reports that the pandemic is easing. Hopefully we can soon contemplate in-person events, albeit with appropriate public health precautions.

I will take it as a good sign about the health of our nation and our democracy when we are able to revive town hall meetings that are both safe and civil. It is important to relearn that we can exchange views with public officials and fellow citizens in a spirited and civil way. We are all custodians of a remarkable country and state—and citizens of the same political community.

Former state Sen. Tom Cullerton pleaded guilty March 8 to one count of embezzlement and could face more than a year in federal prison.

During a plea hearing in federal court in Chicago, Cullerton admitted that he received pay and benefits from the Teamsters Joint Council 25 during 2015 while doing little or no work for the union. In addition to his salary, prosecutors alleged, Cullerton received bonuses and health care benefits.

Cullerton, a Villa Park Democrat, was indicted in 2019 on 40 counts of embezzlement—one for each biweekly paycheck he received from January 2015 through January 2016, a period of time when he also served in the Illinois Senate.

The indictment was one element of a sprawling federal investigation into public corruption led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. Other lawmakers indicted in the sweep included former Sen. Martin Sandoval, who is now deceased; former Rep. Luis Arroyo and; most recently, former House Speaker Michael Madigan. All three are Chicago Democrats.

According to court documents, Cullerton, a one-time chairman of the Senate Labor Committee, had been a member of the Teamsters Union Local 734 when he drove a truck for Hostess Brands until November 2012 when the company filed for bankruptcy. That

was the same year he was elected to the state Senate.

In March 2013, according to the indictment, John Coli, president of the Teamsters Joint Council 25, the local union’s parent organizaTom Cullerton tion, hired Cullerton as a union organizer. He received a salary, a car and telephone allowances and bonuses from the council, which also continued contributing to his health care and retirement benefits through the local union.

On July 30, 2019, two days before Cullerton was indicted, Coli pleaded guilty to other, unrelated federal charges and agreed to cooperate with other investigations.

The indictment also alleged that Cullerton “repeatedly failed to respond to efforts by his supervisors at Teamsters Joint Council 25 to contact him and routinely ignored their requests that he perform the job functions of an organizer, as was required of other organizers employed by Teamsters Joint Council 25.”

After his indictment, Cullerton was removed as chairman of the Labor Committee, but he continued to serve in the Senate and repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. His case was delayed for more than two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic which interrupt-

D u P a g e County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly have announced that a Chicago man Cort Chubko has been charged with posting threatening Facebook messages directed at State Rep. Deb Conroy of Villa Park.

Cort Chubko, 59, appeared in bond court where Judge Joshua Dieden set bond at $100,000 with 10 percent to apply. Chubko has been charged with one count of threatening a public official, a Class 3 felony and one count of intimidation, also a Class 3 felony.

It is alleged that on Feb. 4, and again on Feb. 12, Chubko commented on and replied to comments on Conroy’s Facebook page in a threatening manner. It is alleged that some of the comments left by Chubko included “heavy arms are being moved into and distributed across Dupage County. PEOPLE ARE PAST PISSED and READY TO FIGHT.”, “(expletive) is GOING TO get ugly in DuPage County.”, “This woman and all like her is the reason I own AND CARRY guns.”, “You know how I respond to fear Conroy? I move a little lever from SAFE to FIRE.” and “But know this Conroy

Through the course of their investigation authorities identified Chubko as the individual who allegedly made the posts. He was taken into custody March 11 from his residence without incident.

“For government to function properly, public officials must be allowed to perform their jobs without having to worry about retribution or fear for their personal safety,” Berlin said.

“My office stands ready to prosecute, to the fullest extent of the law, anyone who threatens a public official, their staff or their family. I thank the Illinois State Police for their outstanding work on this case.”

“Anyone contemplating this type of criminal conduct should be forewarned the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation takes threats to public officials of all kinds very seriously,” said ISP Director Brendan Kelly. “The outstanding, professional work of ISP special agents, ISP criminal intelligence analysts and DuPage County prosecutors moved this investigation forward to a swift apprehension of the defendant.”

Chubko’s next court appearance is scheduled April 4 for arraignment in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

In October 2021, Cullerton’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the charges, but a judge denied that motion in December. Then last month, Cullerton resigned his Senate seat and his lawyer announced that he would change his plea.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. But according to a plea agreement, prosecutors said that based on his lack of any previous criminal history, sentencing guidelines would call for 12-18 months imprisonment, in addition to any supervised release, fine and resti-

tution the court might impose.

As part of the plea agreement, Cullerton agreed to pay restitution of $248,828. That includes $247,179.37 to the Teamsters Local Union 734’s Health and Welfare fund, plus $1,648.63 for the paycheck he received on Jan. 15, 2015.

The agreement also calls on Cullerton to pay $25,000 of that amount within the next 30 days, in exchange for which prosecutors agreed not to seek forfeiture of his Villa Park residence.

Formal sentencing has been set for June 21.

VFW Post 2801 Auxiliary announces winners of its Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests STAFF REPORT

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 Auxiliary recently announced the winners of its 2021-22 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship competitions. The auxiliary presented its awards at a program on Sunday, Feb. 27. Winners received monetary awards, as well as gift certificates.

The Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition was open to high school students. Contestants wrote an essay responding to the 2021-22 theme question: “America: Where do we go from here?” In addition to writing their response to that question, students made an audio recording (from 3 to 5 minutes) of their essay.

The Patriot’s Pen contest was open to students in grades 6-8. Entrants completed an essay by writing an answer (300 to 400 words) to the 2021-22 theme question: “How can I be a good American?”

The participants in the Voice of Democracy competition included students from Fenwick High School, Timothy Christian High School and York High School. Contestants in the Patriot’s Pen competition included students from three Elmhurst schools—Sandburg Middle School, Timothy Christian School and Immanuel Lutheran School.

Students who participate in the essay contests can advance to four different levels—VFW Post, district, state and national. With each level of advancement, students can earn more

scholarship funds.

The Villa Park VFW Post 2801 Auxiliary presented its first-place award in the Voice of Democracy contest to Grant Schleiter, a junior at Fenwick High School. He received $250 from the Villa Park VFW, and advanced to the district level, where he placed second and received $300.

Aiden Hoogstra, a sophomore at Timothy Christian High School, earned the second-place award in the Post 2801 Auxiliary’s Voice of Democracy contest. He received $200.

Nicholas Kamenica, a junior at York High School, earned the third-place award and received $150.

The Post 2801 Auxiliary presented its first-place award in the Patriot’s Pen contest to Sophie Saldanha, a seventh-grader at Sandburg Middle School. She received $150 from the Villa Park VFW and advanced to the district competition, where she earned the third-place award and received $175.

Evan Frens, an eighth-grader from Timothy Christian School, received the second-place award in the Post 2801 Auxiliary’s Patriot’s Pen contest. He received $125. Caroline Coan, a seventh-grader at Sandburg Middle School, earned the thirdplace award and received $100.

Kelso begins senior season

Willowbrook High School graduate Jonathan Kelso (No. 4) began his senior season with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team last week. Kelso, who graduated from Willowbrook in 2017, enjoyed a record-breaking junior season for the Pioneers, who play in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Kelso was named the WIAC Player of the year for the 2021 season. The American Baseball Coaches Association recognized Kelso as a second-team All-American. A center fielder, Kelso led the WIAC in hits (69), batting average (.442), slugging percentage (.782), on-base percentage (.532) and stolen bases (27) during the 2021 season. He finished second in the conference in runs scored (55), total bases (122), doubles (18) and triples (4). Kelso finished fourth in the conference in home runs (9). Kelso recorded a hit in 36 of 41 games in which he played. He recorded 25 multi-hit games and delivered a 13-game hitting streak during the season.

He closed the year with a 10-game hitting streak. Kelso was the starting center fielder in all 41 of the Pioneers’ games of the 2021 season. He did not commit any errors in 115 defensive chances. Kelso entered the 2022 season as the UW-Platteville program’s all-time leader in career hits (197). He has a chance to set all-time program records in at-bats, runs scored, doubles, triples, runs batted in, total bases and stolen bases. The Pioneers began their 2022 season with a March 9 doubleheader against Bethel University at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bethel defeated UW-Platteville 5-2 in the first game. The Pioneers earned an 8-3 win in the second game. Kelso, who batted second for the Pioneers, went 1-for-3 and drove in one run in the opening game. He went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in the second game. Kelso and the Pioneers are scheduled to play four games this week at a tournament in Pensacola, Florida.

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 Auxiliary recently recognized the winners of its 2021-22 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship competitions. The Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition was open to high school students.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest was for students in grades 6-8. The winner of the auxiliary’s Patriot’s Pen contest was Sophie Saldanha (pictured with her certificate), a seventh-grader at Sandburg Middle School in Elmhurst.

Several Willowbrook High School musicians competed in the recent Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Solo and Ensemble Contest, which took place at Reavis High School in Burbank on March 5.

Thirty-three Willowbrook students earned a Superior (Division 1) rating in the solo contest, while seven groups earned a Superior rating in the ensemble contest.

McClain, 74, is a former lawmaker who served in the House with Madigan for 10 years beginning in 1972 until he began work as a lobbyist for ComEd. The indictment alleges that for a period of nearly 10 years, Madigan used his positions in the House and within the Democratic Party of Illinois to operate what prosecutors called “the Madigan Enterprise”—a network of operations that used patronage politics and other illegal activities that were set up to preserve his political power and his financial well-being.

Many of the charges are related to the ComEd bribery scheme. In addition, though, Madigan is accused of using his positions illegally to steer work to his property tax law firm, Madigan & Getzendanner, from entities that did business with the state and the city of Chicago.

Specifically, Madigan is charged with one count of conspiracy to engage in racketeering, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or twice the amount of gain for the activity, whichever is greater.

He is also charged with conspiracy to violate several federal statutes, five counts of federal program bribery, nine counts of using interstate facilities to aid in bribery and extortion, five counts of engaging in schemes to commit fraud and one count of attempted extortion.

Those charges carry maximum penalties ranging from five years to 20 years each, as well as $250,000 fines.

McClain is charged with conspiracy to engage in racketeering, one count of federal program bribery, one count of using interstate facilities to aid in bribery and extortion, and two counts of engaging in schemes to commit fraud.

In response to the indictment, Madigan issued a statement denying any criminal activity.

“The government is trying to criminalize a routine constituent service: job recommendations,” he said. “That is not illegal and these other charges are equally unfounded.”

McClain also issued a statement through his attorney saying the charges against him were based on the same acts that were included in an earlier indictment filed in November 2020.

“For years, the government has been trying to force Mike McClain to cooperate in its quest against former Speaker Mike Madigan,” the statement read. “These latest charges are nothing more than the government’s continued attempt to pressure Mike McClain to do the government’s bidding.”

McClain will “never testify falsely about himself or anyone,” regardless of the charges, according to the statement.

“Mike McClain was innocent of the charges when they were first filed in November of 2020. He remains innocent of the recycled and new charges in this latest Indictment,” the statement read.

So with that being said, way to go Villa Park and the Democrats. *** I heard Stephen Colbert, on his socalled talk show, lecturing everyone that even though gas prices are now at record highs, “a clean conscience is worth a buck or two,” in his words because we needed to send a message to Putin and not use Russian oil. Colbert went on about how he is willing to pay $4 a gallon or even $15 a gallon, but don’t be fooled. He’s no patriot. He’s just a leftist blowhard. He drives a Tesla, and gets paid $15 million a year by CBS to host his trash show. Colbert is as clueless and condescending as those shills on “The View.” *** I had to call in after I watched a video of Kamala Harris today (March 10) on YouTube at a press conference with the president of Poland. She was asked about whether the U.S. will make a specific allocation for Ukrainian refugees. She turned to the Polish president and started laughing. Then she said something to him that I thought was bizarre: “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Kamala Harris is an embarrassment and is obviously way in over her head as vice president. *** After the president announced a ban of U.S. imports of Russian oil and gas, he said, “Defending freedom is going to cost.” He’s got that right. Gas prices are approaching $5 a gallon, and that’s certainly going to cost the middle class, the working poor and those on fixed incomes. What’s it going to cost you, Mr. President? You don’t have to worry about putting gas in your car.

You go from place to place in a limo or on Air Force One, all on the public dime. Hopefully, this will ultimately cost Biden something—his job, and the jobs of many of his regressive leftist colleagues in the House and Senate this November.

On second thought, yes, I will. *** I have been traveling to three surrounding states, and all of their gas prices are consistently 20-30 cents a gallon cheaper, and after coming back from a recent road trip, it is actually a wider gap. Gas went up 30 cents a gallon from Friday when I left to Monday when I returned, in Lombard, Villa Park and Elmhurst, so it is more like 50-60 cents difference. Even some gas stations I go to west of DuPage County are 10-20 cents cheaper per gallon (DuPage County had doubled the gas tax). Gov. Pritzker is considering a freeze on gas taxes. That is not good enough. Legislators, please look into how our neighbors can keep gas prices lower than Illinois—and have nicer and free highways, too, by the way— and take a page out of their playbooks.

Who is overseeing how much these gas stations can charge? One idea: Come up with legislation that says gas station owners cannot raise the price of existing gas supplies from shipments they paid less for, because that feels like gas gouging to me. *** I am just waiting for the “woke” crowd to start a campaign to ban Lucky Charms cereal. After all, doesn’t that commercial depict Irish people a certain way? As well, it may be offensive to leprechauns. School names are being changed. Are towns/streets and counties like Jefferson, Davis or Lee going to change their names? This whole brand thing, from sports teams to food, has gotten so ridiculous that it’s just a matter of time before Boo Berry will

With gas prices and high property taxes, along with sales taxes that are more than where I travel, it is no wonder people are moving out of Illinois. *** In the State of the Union address the president said we must lower costs to cut inflation. The first step in that is to lower energy costs, such as gasoline.

Lower shipping costs drops the price of everything. The President also said let’s buy American. We were energy independent. The U.S. was exporting oil. The president is going to release more oil from the strategic reserves.

Big deal; that’s like pouring a bottle of water in the ocean. Let’s lower inflation and get America going by opening the Keystone pipeline and be energy independent again. Gas prices will go down and so will the price of everything that is shipped. *** I am going to keep wearing a mask, regardless of what the rules are. Kids wore masks in schools, and no kids in our area died from COVID-19. So that must mean that masks have worked, right? Another thing I’ve noticed: I

have been wearing a mask, and all of the snow has melted from my yard.

Again, that must have something to do with the masks. Also, I’ve kept wearing a mask, and the days have been getting longer. The sun is setting after 7 p.m. Yes, it must be the masks. Is there anything those blue napkins can’t do? *** A lot of pro-maskers have been bullying, shaming and harassing others about masking for two years. They forced kids to wear masks, and they confronted people in stores, restaurants and even outdoors. These same pro-maskers are now calling for respect and tolerance. What a joke. The maskers are afraid they will be treated the way they treated others. *** I think the sentence that Jussie Smollett got was pretty correct. He should serve some time, but not as much as he could have; save the jail cells for serious, dangerous criminals. I am glad he has to pay back $122,000 also. *** A couple of months ago, Biden said un-vaccinated Americans were headed for a winter of severe illness and death.

He demanded that people who weren’t vaccinated lose their jobs, and he forced kids to wear masks in schools.

All of that was anti-science and divisive. Now he’s Mr. Unity, saying we shouldn’t let COVID-19 divide us.

What a fraud. *** I’m glad the police reports are published in the paper, but they sure are depressing. Retail theft, DUI, domestic assault. Numerous reports of people stealing catalytic converters from vehicles. Constant reports of identity theft and people stealing mail and doctoring checks. There are so many people doing rotten things. What is the world coming to? And I don’t know if you’ll publish this, but how many of these criminals are in this country illegally?
