About 9 percent of DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) daily COVID-19 update from March 7 reported that about 9 percent of DuPage County’s population has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The IDPH stated that as of March 7, 83,888 DuPage County residents (out of the county’s total reported population of 928,589) had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The IDPH report from the same day related that a total of 252,185

COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to county residents.

The IDPH report from one week earlier—Feb. 28—indicated that nearly 60,000 (about 6.44 percent) of DuPage County’s residents had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The report from Feb. 28 stated that about 196,000 vaccine doses had been administered in the county.

The first COVID-19 vaccinations in DuPage County were administered on Dec. 16, 2020.

The IDPH update from March 7

Humana notifies members of data security incident Humana is notifying approximately 65,000 health plan members, including approximately 3,600 in Illinois, that personal information may have been exposed when a subcontractor’s employee inappropriately disclosed medical records to unauthorized individuals.

Cotiviti is a company that helps Humana request medical records needed to verify data reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Cotiviti in turn uses a subcontractor to review the collected medical records. An employee of that subcontractor, who was authorized to access and use the data for Humana purposes, inappropriately disclosed information to unapproved individuals for unauthorized training purposes between Oct. 12, 2020 and Dec. 16, 2020. Humana was informed on Dec. 22, 2020.

The subcontractor immediately disabled the access of the now former employee. Both Cotiviti and its subcontractor put in place a broad strategy to prevent any further unauthorized disclosure of information. Humana also worked with Cotiviti to ensure it took immediate steps to enhance protections and secure personal information now and into the future. To help prevent something like this from happening again, Humana took prompt action to ensure the appropriate physical and technical safeguards are in place at Cotiviti and its subcontractor.

Information including name, date of birth, Social Security Number (full or partial), address, phone number, email address, insurance identification num-

bers, provider name, date of service, medical record number, treatment information and imagery (x-ray, photographs, etc.) may have been part of the medical records involved.

While Humana does not believe this personal information will be used inappropriately because of this event, Humana takes seriously its responsibility to ensure the security of personal information and regrets any concern this event may have caused. Humana is reportedly offering Credit WatchTM Gold with 3-in-1 Monitoring identity theft protection, through Equifax, for two years to affected Humana members at no cost.

In addition, Humana is advising members to remain vigilant by reviewing documents for suspicious activity, including Explanation of Benefit (EOB) letters, SmartSummary statements, medical records, account statements and credit reports. If members find unfamiliar activity on the statements they receive from Humana, they should notify Humana immediately.

If they see suspicious activity on their credit report, they should call their local police office to file a report for identity theft.

The police department will be judged on the basis of 67 separate ILEAP standards regarding administration, operations, personnel, and training. The department has been revising its policies and procedures in order to meet the standards set by ILEAP. In order to complete the accreditation process, the policies and procedures must not only reflect the standards established by ILEAP, but the files that are developed must show that the department is following its own policies and procedures.

In order to complete the process, two ILEAP assessors, Chief Tony Brown of the Rantoul Police Department and Deputy Chief Holly Nearing, retired, of the Champaign Police Department will conduct an on-site assessment of the Bensenville Police Department. Agency personnel, elected officials and members of the community are invited to offer comments during a public information call in session on Tuesday, March 23rd between the hours of 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at 630-350-3455. Villa Park officers will provide increased patrols for alcohol/drug-impaired drivers during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period. Police will also step up seat-belt enforcement, particularly at night, when seat belt usage rates are lower than they are during the daytime.

The St. Patrick’s Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds provided by the National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration. The campaign is administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

Speed limits and distracted driving laws will also be strictly enforced during the upcoming holiday period.

Designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive impaired are two simple steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for driving under the influence.

The Villa Park Police Department recently issued some other tips for a

safe holiday celebration: • If you do not have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home, call a cab or a sober friend or family member to pick you up, or stay where you are and sleep it off until you are sober.

• Buckle up. It’s your best defense in the event of a crash.

• Remember, pedestrians are at risk, too. If you are walking, keep an eye out for cars. If you’re driving, remain alert for impaired walkers who might not obey street signs.

Residents should know the signs of fraud and report suspected cases of fraud immediately by calling 800-HHS-TIPS (800-447-8477), or visiting https://tips.oig.hhs.gov.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, scammers are using telemarketing calls, text messages, social media platforms and door-to-door visits to perpetuate scams related to COVID-19.

Fraudsters are reportedly offering COVID-19 tests, government grants and Medicare prescription cards in exchange for personal details, including Medicare information. These offers are unapproved and illegitimate.

Some scammers are using the coronavirus pandemic to benefit themselves while subjecting their victims to potential harm. The personal information collected by scammers can be used to fraudulently bill federal health programs, and to commit medical identity theft.

Many of us who walk for exercise still have to walk in dangerous traffic, even five days after temperatures above freezing. It is everyone’s responsibility as a property owner/ renter to clear the sidewalk within three days. Pictures and calls to the village will help us keep our village safe. *** So far, Joe Biden has: Opened the borders to let in more illegal immigrants to tax our system. Spent money to support laboratory in Wuhan China that gave us COVID-19. Has pledged money to WHO that covered for China. Put in policies that raised gas prices giving every American another tax increase of sorts. Rejoined the Paris accord to spend more of our tax dollars. But hey, you got rid of Trump. How is that vote working out for you? Sheep is a word that comes to mind. *** I really thought the new Illinois Speaker of the House would bring some fresh perspective into addressing this state’s pension liabilities. But I see he wants to revisit the graduated income tax that went down in flames in the last election as a way to pay down the $141 billion pension debt. Typical Democrat. be any to vote for! *** Amazing the American people will get a $1,400 relief check, yet federal employees will receive $1,400 every week for 15 weeks if their kids are not in school full-time. To top it off, if their child is in college and taking classes from home online, they qualify. How is that vote working out for you? This administration cares nothing about you; only the entitled elite. *** Might be time to dive into the character and beliefs of those running for school boards. Do you want your children being guided by those with leftist beliefs? Do you want the cancel culture to implement policy for your children? Pay attention people. Conroy supports new resolution State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park), in partnership with the Illinois Association for Behavioral Health (IABH), is sponsoring House Resolution 131 which advocates for prescribed medication for addiction treatment be administered to incarcerated Illinoisans.

“This resolution sheds light on life-saving issues and I’ll continue to be an advocate for Illinoisans who struggle everyday with internal battles,” said Conroy. “It is my hope that the pandemic highlights the importance of proper mental healthcare in Illinois, especially for those who

are often left behind by society. I encourage every county in Illinois to adopt permanent policies to allow any person with a mental health related disorder to receive life-saving addiction treatment medication while under county jurisdiction.”

Conroy’s House Resolution 131 was recently filed in response to a patient at the DuPage County Jail being unjustly denied access to her life-saving prescribed medication.

The DuPage County Jail now intends to provide the prescribed, life-saving medication during the patients stay at their facility.

American Rescue Plan Act passes U.S. House

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I’m proud to relay to you that the American Rescue Plan Act, which I supported, passed the House the last week of February.

This package will provide muchneeded relief to American families still struggling from the Coronavirus pandemic. It includes individual stimulus checks up to $1,400, extended unemployment programs with benefit increases of up to $400 per week, $20 billion for COVID-19 vaccine distribution, $30 billion in emergency rental assistance, and $50 billion for COVID-19 testing.

Within this package, I spearheaded provisions for state and local aid and for health care worker mental wellness. Through my position on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, I championed the inclusion of $350 billion for state and local governments, territories, and tribes.

This state and local aid will be used to help governments avoid cuts to essential services and staff, including police, firefighters, and teachers.

Another provision I authored within this bill provides $40 million for health providers to create or enhance programs that provide mental health care for their workers.

This provision is similar to my Coronavirus Health Care Worker Wellness Act, which I introduced last Congress.

Fundamentally, we need to support our healthcare heroes as they face the challenges of fighting the pandemic on the frontlines, with all

the stress and risk of burnout that come with it.

Oversight Committee hearing on the U.S. Postal Service Recently, I questioned Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in the House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on the delays in USPS services.

According to USPS data, the performance of the USPS declined upon the arrival of Postmaster General DeJoy in June 2020. In January 2020, 90 percent of two-day local first-class mail was delivered on time, declining to 70 percent in December 2020. Similarly, 80 percent of 3-5 day nonlocal firstclass mail was delivered on time in January 2020 but declined to 40 percent in December 2020.

Mr. DeJoy did not have an explanation for this decline in service and refused to commit to preserving the current two-day delivery standard for local first-class mail.

I was troubled by the responses I received from my constituents through social media citing instances of delayed mail, such as medication, which caused real-life consequences for them. I will continue to investigate and provide oversight on the USPS so that every family can continue to rely on this American institution.

Cullerton: Local hospital to receive additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine As COVID-19 vaccination distribution ramps up, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) is pleased to announce that the AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Glendale Oaks is set to receive 300 to 500 more doses of the vaccine per week thanks to a new pilot program to reach underserved communities.

The new formula equitably distributes new state dollars each year, prioritizing the state’s most underfunded school districts. In early childhood education and care, Gov. JB Pritzker’s Early Childhood Funding Commission is poised to release recommendations that promise to illuminate a path to a more coordinated and equitable system of funding and governance.

In higher education, the Illinois Board of Higher Education and advocates are using data to expose barriers to college access and affordability for Illinois students and are committed to redesigning and implementing an equitable, adequate funding structure going forward.

While these gains are encouraging, they depend, in turn, on the state growing its investment in early childhood, public schools and higher education. Our educational investments benefit, in turn, on making access to stable housing, health care and nutrition a priority.

The state’s push for equity is critical because the hard truth is Illinois’ programs and schools do not provide equal access and quality for all children. Opportunity gaps start early and persist among students by race/ethnicity, income, home language and geography. Fewer than one in three kindergarteners enters school “ready to learn,” and only 35 percent of fourth-graders are proficient in reading.

While 85 percent of students graduate high school, only 53 percent of students go on to college. Despite the fact that the majority of employers need employees with more than a high school diploma, just over half of Illinois residents hold a college degree or postsecondary credential.

Facing lean state budgets in recent years, funding for child care and early education

programs along with higher education has remained far from the levels needed, and in some cases has been repeatedly cut or deprioritized.

Chronic underfunding threatens child development and stands in the way of young adults’ college and career success. Worse, these actions disproportionately affect our low-income communities and communities of color.

Even before COVID-19, in early childhood, young children across the state lacked access to high-quality and affordable services. Many pockets of the state had and continue to have “child care deserts,” and the industry struggles to recruit and retain a workforce that earns near poverty level wages. Illinois’ higher education sector has been underfunded for a decade, leaving institutions no choice but to shut down programs, raise tuition and rely on out-of-state students’ tuition.

These practices have priced many Illinois students out of the market or decreased the number of opportunities available.

By no means left unscathed, prior to the passage of EBF in 2017, the K-12 public education system weathered years of deep cuts, as the practice of across-the-board reductions known as “proration” resulted in the largest losses of state funding for the state’s highest-need school districts. While EBF has significantly bolstered K-12 funding, and done so with a strong equity focus, we still have a long way to go.

While the federal government has provided important short-term funding as a stopgap to help weather the current storm, the state has a critical role to play to ensure children and youth have equitable and adequate funding moving forward.

That responsibility will be complicated

Willowbrook’s badminton team defeated Addison Trail 15-0 in last week’s dual meet in Villa Park. The Warriors honored their senior players at the March 3 meet. The team’s seniors include Katy Abbott, Cara Burns and Lana Gallagher. Abbott teamed up with junior Becca Lopez Egan for a 21-17, 21-8 victory in the No. 1 doubles match. Abbott also posted a 21-3, 21-4 victory in the No. 2 singles battle. The photo above shows Gallagher during her 21-6, 21-7 win in the No. 4 singles contest. Gallagher contributed to another win by joining junior Allison Harr to claim a 217, 21-13 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Burns and junior Kali Becker delivered a 21-13, 23-21 win in the No. 5 doubles match. I’d live my life with you a second time in a heartbeat, even if I knew the outcome. You were my everything. You still are. You always will be.

But now I have to step forward, into the unknown. The path we’d chosen, the path we’d planned on, the path I thought was cemented in stone no longer exists. It is gone.

I have to create a new path, even a new me. I have to forge new relationships and do the things you always used to do for me. I have to push myself and challenge my comfort zone.

You were the second half of my whole; that will never, ever change, but there is room for more living.

And I have to pursue a life that goes forward.

Oh my goodness do I wish it included you. With my whole heart, I wish that. But wishes are for the foolish. Faith is for the goodhearted.

I have faith. I have faith in the future. In my future. I have faith in

us. We will be there forever, for the long haul. Forever and always. I believe that to the core of my being.

But there is a reason why I am here and you are there —there are probably many reasons. And, if I am to fulfill my own destiny and purpose, I have to continue living here on this earth. Fully living, not just existing, which is what grief wants me to do. I have to step forward, sometimes inches at a time and find my new path.

I know I have your support. I know you will walk alongside me, every step of the way. I know you visit me at night when I sleep. I

know you will hold my hand when I am afraid and that you will send me songs and birds and squirrels to touch my heart and buoy my spirit. I know you are rooting for me. I know you want me to do this, to succeed. I know you love me, now and forever.

And you know on my end that’s a ditto. A big fat unequivocal ditto.

Here we go. Let’s do this.

Extended federal benefits end for some jobless residents

Benefits for some unemployed state residents provided under an aid program targeting mostly self-employed and gig workers will be capped at 50 weeks instead of 57, the state announced March 3. The shortened period for benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program was triggered by a decline in the state’s unemployment rate.

The PUA program, which was first established by Congress last March, offers benefits to independent contractors, self-employed individuals, gig workers and others not covered by

traditional state unemployment insurance.

After Congress renewed the program in December, eligible individuals could receive up to 57 weeks of PUA benefits. The law passed in December, the Continued Assistance Act, also extended regular state unemployment insurance benefits by seven weeks.

Both those seven-week benefit extensions have ended, according to a state news release. This means individuals eligible for PUA will receive up to 50 weeks of benefits, and those eligible for extended regular state unemployment insurance benefits will receive up to 13 weeks of benefits.

I’m still struggling, but I know I have to step forward on a path I wouldn’t have considered six months ago. Because it didn’t exist six months ago.

The rest of the world is business as usual. People all around me are walking on the paths of their choosing. I feel like half the time I’m desperately searching for mine.

The other half I’m desperately afraid I’ll actually find it.

I would give anything, anything to have my dear, sweet, loving husband back, but that isn’t possible, and that leaves me with a choice: to step forward or to stay stuck in the past.

I can stay in this cycle of grief; I can give up and only look backwards. Or I can decide that grief 24/7 — forever — isn’t for me or for anyone. I can decide to take tiny steps forward. For myself. For our kids. For our grandkids.

I choose the latter.

I will never (not ever) forget the years we had together. I will always (as in the infinite always) love you. I will see you and be with you again. You will be there to greet me. I have no doubt about that. You are watching over me now. I trust you are. I talk to you daily. Our love continues to grow. I feel your presence and I know you are near.

But I can’t live in the past. It hurts too much, for myself and those here who still love me.

Warriors outscore two conference rivals in three-team virtual meet

Ball, Placek and Franczak land in a three-way tie for first in the all-around standings

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team defeated Addison Trail and Morton in last week’s virtual meet.

Each of the three teams performed simultaneously in their respective gyms during the virtual meet on March 4. The Warriors outscored both of their West Suburban Gold Conference opponents in the event.

Willowbrook posted a team total of 131.3. Addison Trail earned a score of 122.45, while Morton tallied a 105.3.

Sophomore Molly Morris of the Warriors delivered the meet’s best score on the vault (8.4). Another Willowbrook sophomore—Sarah Ball—delivered the top score on the balance beam (8.7).

Addison Trail freshman Nicolette Franczak earned the first-place score on the uneven bars (8.6). Senior Francesca Scarabaggio of the Blazers turned in the highest individual score in the floor exercises (8.8).

Ball, Franczak and Willowbrook junior Tess Placek shared first-place honors in the meet’s all-around competition. Each of the three gymnasts earned an all-around total of 33.35.

In addition to her first-place score of 8.7 on the balance beam, Ball finished third in floor exercises (8.35), third on the uneven bars (8.1) and tied for sixth on the vault (8.2).

Placek compiled her all-around total of 33.35 after her second-place efforts on the balance beam (8.6) and in floor exercises (8.6), along with a

tie for third on the vault (8.25) and a fourth-place score of 7.9 on the uneven bars.

Franczak’s all-around total included her first-place score of 8.6 on the uneven bars, as well as second-place effort on the vault (8.3), a third-place showing on the balance beam (8.25) and a fourth-place performance in floor exercises (8.2).

Willowbrook sophomore Hanna Mitrick earned fourth in the meet’s all-around competition with her total of 32.0. Mitrick’s meet included a fourth-place finish on the balance beam (8.2), a tie for fourth in floor exercises (8.2) and a fifth-place showing on the uneven bars (7.45).

Scarabaggio wound up fifth in the all-around standings with her score of 31.8. In addition to her firstplace score of 8.8 in floor exercises, Scarabaggio’s meet included a thirdplace tie on the vault (8.25).

Junior Bella Naumovsky of the Warriors earned a second-place finish on the uneven bars (8.2). Willowbrook senior Maeve Costello tied for sixth on the uneven bars (7.4) and tied for eighth on the vault (8.0).

Several Willowbrook parents attended last week’s action in Villa Park to watch the gymnastics and help the team honor its seniors— Costello, Karen Cruz and Jai-Lynn Randle.

The Warriors will complete their abbreviated season by competing in this Saturday’s West Suburban Gold Conference Meet at Hinsdale South.

Willowbrook High School’s dance team competed in the recent IHSA Competitive Dance State Meet, which took place virtually. Teams that qualify for the state meet normally travel to Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington for the event. This year’s competition, however, was held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of competing at the same venue, the state-qualifying teams recorded their performances at their own schools and submitted the recordings to a panel of judges. Willowbrook’s dance team recorded its state-meet performance in the school’s main gymnasium on March 2. The IHSA announced the results of the competition on Saturday, March 6. Willowbrook placed 16th out of 30 state-qualifying teams in the state meet’s 2A division. Willowbrook began the week with an 83-64 loss at Hinsdale South on March 2. The Warriors then played a pair of games on Saturday that were part of the West Suburban Conference Tournament. Both contests took place at Addison Trail. Willowbrook began the day with an 83-63 loss to Lyons Township. The Warriors won their second game on Saturday, beating Addison Trail 73-53.

Willowbrook has earned both of its wins against the Blazers. The Warriors defeated Addison Trail 6559 in Villa Park on Feb. 19.

Willowbrook trailed the Hornets 46-36 at halftime of last week’s game at Hinsdale South. The Hornets increased their lead to 68-48 by the end

of the third period.

Willowbrook sophomore Noah Campbell poured in 29 points during last week’s loss to Hinsdale South.

Campbell made all seven of his 3-point attempts. He converted four of six shots from 2-point range in his tremendous 11-of-13 performance from the field. Campbell didn’t shoot any free throws during the game.

Junior Marquel Saleek provided 16 points for the Warriors in their loss to the Hornets. Saleek made three of six shots from 3-point territory.

Lyons Township built a 22-12 lead over the Warriors through one quarter of Saturday’s game. The Lions’ lead stood at 44-33 at halftime.

Lyons Township, which scored 22 points in each of the first three periods, held a 66-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team posted four decisive victories last week to improve its overall season record to 9-2.

The Warriors opened the week by crushing Hinsdale South 57-11 in Villa Park on March 2. The Warriors earned a 54-13 win at Morton on Friday. Those 14 teams have played only against conference opponents during the current season.

Willowbrook’s only losses of the season have come against two Silver Division teams—York and Lyons Township.

All of the conference’s teams (seven in the Gold Division and seven in the Silver Division) are playing exclusively within the 14team conference during the current season.
