DuPage County awarded Census Grant DuPage County announced last week that it had received a $25,025 grant from the Reaching Across Illinois Library System’s (RAILS) Census 2020: It Counts! grant project. DuPage County is a sub-recipient of the funds awarded to RAILS from the Governor and the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS).

DuPage County has identified three main ways it will use the funding, including: • Purchase technology to be used for questionnaire assistance at County facilities that service populations that have history been undercounted in the Census, including

Community Services, the Health Department, and workNet DuPage.

• Design and print informative materials explaining how to take the Census.

• Carry out other communications efforts, including public service announcements, digital advertising, and social media posts.

So far, DuPage County has taken numerous steps to get the word out on the Census and increase the number of people who take the questionnaire. The County Board created the DuPage Complete Count Committee (DCCC), a special advisory group that includes 27 community organizations, local government

partners, and residents to collaborate on ways to ensure a complete and accurate Census count.

“Ensuring an accurate Census count is extremely important for Illinois,” said Sadia Covert, chairwoman of the DCCC. “More than $675 billion will be distributed nationwide to support state and County schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs in our communities. We will use our unique position within our community to ensure a complete count to guarantee our community gets what it deserves.”

County to present 29th Advanced Severe Weather Seminar The public is invited to attend the 29th annual DuPage Advanced Severe Weather Seminar presented by the DuPage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management on March 14. Former Fox32 Chicago Meteorologist Tammie Souza will again emcee the day-long seminar with special guest, ABC7 Chicago Meteorologist Tracy Butler.

The Weather Channel’s Storm Specialist and Meteorologist Mark Elliot will be the featured presenter.

The first seminar was held in 1991 as a collaborative effort between the

then DuPage County Emergency Management Agency and the College of DuPage’s meteorology program.

The idea for the seminar was the devastating F-5 tornado that struck nearby Plainfield on Aug. 28, 1990.

Twenty-nine lives were lost, 350 injured, and 470 homes destroyed with another 1,000 homes damaged.

Considered a premiere educational and severe weather safety event, the DuPage seminar annually draws 500 attendees from around the Midwest and from as far away as New York.

Some of this year’s topics include a

refresher on severe weather spotting, learning how the College of DuPage’s NexLab conducts storm chasing trips, and a review of the 2018 Taylorville EF-3 tornado.

This year’s seminar will be held at Wheaton College on Saturday, March 14 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required at a cost of $40, which includes a continental breakfast, hot lunch buffet, and a commemorative T-shirt. Three suspects lead police on high-speed chase Charged with stealing merchandise from Elmhurst Kohl’s store

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that bond has been set for three individuals accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from two DuPage County retailers—one in Wheaton and the other in Elmhurst.

Victor Williams, 30, and Joshlyn Allen, 19, both of Chicago; and Emiaya Shannon, 22, Merrillville, Ind., appeared in bond court last week, where Judge Anthony Coco set bond at $350,000 for Williams and $50,000 for Allen and Shannon.

All three defendants face multiple felony burglary and retail theft charges. In addition, Williams faces one count of fleeing and eluding while Allen faces one count of being a fugitive from justice out of Jackson County, Mo. It is alleged that on Feb. 15 at approximately 4:51 p.m., the three defendants entered the Ulta Beauty store located in Danada Square in Wheaton, and stole approximately $4,000 worth of merchandise, including multiple bottles of cologne and perfume.

It is further alleged that the trio left the Ulta Beauty store with the stolen merchandise and traveled to the Kohls department store located in the 300 block of S. Route 83 in Elmhurst. It is alleged that the trio

then entered the Kohls store and stole approximately $6,000 worth of merchandise, including various items of Nike and Adidas clothing.

It is alleged that the defendants left the Kohls store with the merchandise at which time Elmhurst Police officers attempted to stop their car in the Kohls parking lot. It is alleged that the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Williams, exited the Kohls parking lot by driving into oncoming traffic.

It is further alleged that a high-speed car chase ensued ultimately ending in Chicago when the defendant’s car crashed into a Chicago Police Department squad car. The suspects unsuccessfully attempted to flee again following the crash. The defendants were taken into custody at this time.

“The tremendous amount of effort and resources utilized in this case, including the use of a helicopter to locate the alleged offenders’ car, is a testament to law enforcement’s commitment to public safety,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their work in this case.”

The next court appearance for all three defendants is scheduled for March 16 in front of Judge George Bakalis for arraignment.

Following a recent report by the DuPage County Coroner highlighting a continuous rise in deaths due to synthetic opioid abuse, specifically fentanyl, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, has renewed her commitment to combating the opioid epidemic.

“Our community continues to suffer because access to dangerous, addictive substances is easier than access to comprehensive health care,” Conroy said. “We are facing a mental health crisis, yet it’s easier than ever to obtain prescription painkillers that often serve as the gateway to additional drug use.”

In DuPage County over the past few years, a decrease in heroin-related deaths has been accompanied by a rise in fentanyl-related deaths.

Fentanyl is a highly addictive and dangerous illegal synthetic opioid often used as a stronger opioid alternative and to lace heroin. As a recent report from DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen found, from 2018 to 2019, deaths due to a heroin/fentanyl mixture increased from 34 to 42, while deaths from fentanyl alone

increased from 30 to 33.

As chair of the House Mental Health Committee, Conroy has championed a number of reforms to address the opioid epidemic as a mental health crisis. Because the epidemic has caused a rise in the spread of transmittable diseases due to unsafe needle usage, Conroy supported a law creating the Needle and Hypodermic Syringe Access Program to encourage the establishment of needle exchange programs across the state.

The CDC recognizes needle exchange programs as an effective tool to reduce the spread of blood borne illnesses while importantly helping to build connections between users and treatment facilities and not resulting in increased drug use. To hold those who are responsible for manufacturing and delivering lethal drugs accountable, Conroy introduced House Bill 4081 to increase the statute of limitations from 3 years to 10 years for drug-induced homicide. In the fiscal year 2019 budget, Conroy secured a 28 percent increase in funding for mental health services

and addiction treatment.

“Ending this epidemic will require a holistic approach that supports those suffering with addiction by ensuring access to treatment while also holding those who bring these lethal drugs into our homes responsible for the harm they cause,” Conroy said.

“I look forward to continue working with my colleagues to attack this epidemic from all angles and protect our community from further damage.”

Yet the stock market—which dangerously ballooned due to corporations using their tax cuts to buy back their own stock—is doing great; at least until the bubble bursts. *** Chicago Sun-Times headline: Pritzker’s budget message: “Pass graduated income tax or lose $1.4B for schools, health care, public safety.” Chicago Tribune headline: “Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s $42 billion state budget promises added funding for schools, public safety—if voters approve his graduated income tax in November.” If that’s not political extortion, I don’t know what is. Or is this an acceptable quid pro quo? As a homeowner whose bank account is already being sucked dry by property taxes to the point I may have to move, how much more can you take away from me in taxes; like essentially paying twice for school funding with an income tax increase? It is in the state constitution that Illinois is responsible for the larger part of school funding, for a so-called “free” education. The state should have been paying its share way before this governor came into power. This is where I want to see my legislators and school boards stand up for those who elected them. *** Every time I go to the Yorktown Mall, I see more and more dogs.

Now they have a dog lounge on the second floor. I love dogs, but this is getting ridiculous. If whoever is running the mall thinks this is a way to get more people to shop there, I don’t think it’s going to work. Really, how much shopping can you do when you have a dog on a leash? There’s at least three stores I know of that have closed at the mall since December, one of them being The Gap. They should put more effort into finding stores to replace the ones that have closed instead of catering to dogs.

What’s next? A cat lounge? *** I was a Democrat, but seeing how hateful and evil they are, taking billions of dollars from the taxpayers for false claims of collusion and impeachment, we could have built two or three walls with their witch hunt.

DuPage County Board voted against the tradition of having a non-denominational invocation before each board meeting. An atheist even gave one of the invocations, yet this is not good enough for the Democrats. This just another example of how much they despise religion and people of faith. What has happened to the Democratic Party? *** Billionaire JB Pritzker has got it all figured out. He’s counting on the state to take in $46 million in adult-use cannabis revenue for the budget year that begins July 1. I’m sure that will go a long way to fund his $42 billion proposed budget.

That $46 million might pay for the thousands of retired school administrators and public employees that draw $100,000 pensions for about a week, if that. Keep on giving us more smoke and mirrors, JB.

Lawmakers decline to block new gun store regulations

A group of Illinois lawmakers on Feb. 18 declined to block the Illinois State Police from implementing new administrative rules governing firearms dealers.

Those rules were adopted on an emergency basis in January, nearly one year after Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Firearms Dealer License Certification Act into law. I t requires that anyone holding a federal firearms license who engages in the business of selling or transferring firearms also obtain a state certificate and subject themselves to state regulation.

ISP initially proposed rules to implement that law in August, but the draft rules ran into stiff opposition from gun store owners who said those rules—including requirements for video surveillance and the storage of guns and ammunition—would be impossible to comply with and would put many gun stores out of business.

The agency then began rewriting the proposed rules and in December submitted new rules on an emergency basis. That means they are allowed to remain in place for up to 150 days, during which time the agency must resubmit proposed new permanent rules that could be subject to public hearings

and public comment.

During a recent meeting of the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules or JCAR—a 12-member legislative panel that has oversight authority over the rulemaking process—Sen. Paul Schimpf, R-Waterloo, and Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, offered a motion to suspend the rules, arguing that “agency-created emergencies do not constitute an appropriate use of emergency rule.”

Although the motion appeared to receive support from a majority of those voting, it fell short of the two-thirds majority, or eight votes, required by law for JCAR to block administrative rules.

The Patriot Pen entry from Timothy Christian Middle School is eighth-grader Aiden Hoogstra (above), who placed first and received a scholarship award of $400. Hoogstra advanced to the State of Illinois VFW Department Level, along with other district level winners. He took third place at state and received a $250 scholarship.

Confessions of a super seasoned parent When it comes to parenting, I’ve been around the block a time or two. Heck, I’ve practically worn out the course.

My husband and I have even transitioned to the next generation of parenting, which is so great it can be described as “grand.” Our daughter and son-in-law are parents themselves and are embracing parenthood as only first-timers can. We’ve all been there. The dichotomy between parenting a first child and second-born is substantial. With children further down the line, the phenomenon is exponentiated.

We are currently finishing up with our fourth. To say he lives in a different world than his 10-year-older sister did is an understatement. With her I used to try to be a super parent. It was tough going. There were so many details and important things to attend to. Like matching socks.

I remember when my daughter was six and had just started playing soccer. I was unfamiliar with the game and when helping her get dressed I put her shin guards on over her socks. It’s supposed to be the other way around. Imagine my horror – first when I discovered my error, and later when a photo of her wrong-way socks made the front page in the sports section of the local newspaper, clearly illustrating my parenting prowess in the soccer shin guard department. I was devastated.

An error in shin guards would no longer faze me. I’ve embarrassed myself in much bigger ways over the years. A gaffe in sporting equipment is the least of my worries – even if it does make the front page of the newspaper.

During my parenting tenure, I’ve learned a lot about a lot of things. I can outfit a 6-year-old in protective hockey gear, competently launder football pads, and multi-task third grade reading practice and sixth grade math homework. Soccer pads? They’re a cinch.

But mostly I’ve learned how not to be a perfect parent.

I used to think I could do it all. I used to try to do it all. And then I grew up alongside my older kids and I realized doing it all doesn’t make you the perfect parent. Sometimes relaxing does.

Sometimes not sweating the small stuff (99 percent of it is small stuff) benefits everyone.

myself to all the other perfect parents. And there are so many out there, aren’t there? I’ve learned not to set myself up as a perfect parent. I’ve learned perfection is constricting. I’ve learned to be honest – mostly with myself, because that brings a peace that perfection and competition can’t touch.

Here’s one honesty: Every Friday I get a notification from the school telling me I can take a peek at which assignments my kid is missing. I hardly ever click on the link. I’m seasoned and tired. I don’t want to spend the weekend harping on him to get things done. It’s his job, not mine.

Making it mine is a disservice to both him and me.

If my kid falls behind or is struggling I contact the teacher – usually through email because I believe that is what is most convenient for already-too-busy teachers. But I no longer hover over his work thinking that hovering makes me a better parent, or makes me look better as a parent.

Pretending is just too much work. It isn’t worth it.

I am a seasoned and imperfect parent. I’ve never been a perfect parent, although for years I tried to wear that mask. But masks can be exhausting and suffocating.

When kids are young, they need our help with things like shin guards, reading homework, and the golden rule. They don’t ever stop needing our help or us, not really. But to set ourselves up for perfection – to attempt to be the ultimate public Facebook persona is just plain wrong – for them and for us. And that is my parenting truth for today.

Tomorrow may be different, because I’m still learning.

Parenting is like that.

ESO to present Bach’s ‘Passion According to St. John’ The public is invited to join in one of the greatest musical experiences of all time, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Passion According to St. John, when the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, the Apollo Chorus of Chicago and a stellar cast of soloists, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, join forces in one of the most dramatic and moving sacred pieces ever composed.

“With the combined power of the ESO and the Apollo Chorus, along with five distinguished soloists from the world of opera, our listeners will hear a performance of utmost passion and musical excellence,” noted Maestro Alltop.

The orchestra and chorus will be joined by soprano Bahareh

Poureslami, countertenor Ryan Belongie, tenor Steven Soph (the Evangelist), tenor Ryan Townsend Strand and bass Kyle Jensen, to create an unforgettable afternoon of music-making. The concert, a highlight of the 2019-20 season, takes place on Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. at the ESO’s home venue at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church.

The soloists’ appearances are underwritten by a generous gift from Keith and Irmgard Olson.

Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church is located at 149 W. Brush Hill Rd in Elmhurst. The church has accessible parking and facilities; parking is free. The concert experience at ECRC is enhanced by the informative and lively discussion, Behind the Music Stand, led by au-

dience favorite Dr. Ted Hatmaker, which takes place at 1:45 p.m. prior to the concert.

Stewart, who teaches painting and drawing, will display her large-scale paintings composed of organic abstract forms, along with her preparatory studies. Stewart has been a practicing artist for more than 30 years, creating both large- and small-scale abstract landscape acrylic paintings with collage elements stressing pattern and texture. Her work has received several honors and is included in museums and private collections nationally.

Hill, who teaches digital imaging and photography, will show works resulting from her experiments with digital mixed media. Hill’s previous work reflected her eagerness to engage with and personally interpret different cultures, and projects led her to India, the U.K. and South Africa. Hill’s current body of work reflects influences closer to home, as she is inspired by the landscapes of rural northern Illinois and the Midwest. Her works have been exhibited in both conventional and online galleries.

Sabbatical Exhibitions will be on display from Monday, Feb. 24, through Saturday, March 21, in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge on the campus of Elmhurst College. Admission to the exhibit and reception are free and all are welcome. For more information, call (630) 617-6110.

Elmhurst AAUW seeks scholarship applicants Two scholarships available; deadline is April 1 The AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch is offering two scholarships of $2,500 each to women from the communities of Elmhurst, Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Northlake, Oak Brook, or Villa Park who need financial assistance to continue education at the undergraduate or graduate level.

An applicant may be studying full or part time. Besides being from one of the above communities, the applicant must be continuing her education after completing at least 12 credit hours at an accredited college or university and be age 25 or older.

The AAUW mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research at both the national and local levels. Funds for these scholarships come from the Used Book Sale that AAUW hosts each summer. The 2019 Used Book Sale was so successful that the organization is pleased to be able to offer 2 scholarships once again this year.

Willowbrook High School recognized 11 students as Outstanding Students for the third quarter of the 2019-20 school year during a recent breakfast in their honor. To be chosen for Outstanding Student Award, students must demonstrate extraordinary achievement and outstanding effort while displaying a commendable attitude. Fenton boys basketball team wins two more games Bison now at 19 victories heading into final week of regular season

The forward progress of the Fenton boys basketball team continues.

The Bison recorded a pair of Upstate Eight Conference wins recently to move to 19-11 overall and 10-7 in UEC action.

Fenton beat Bartlett 45-43 at the buzzer and also scored a league win, 61-45, against Elgin.

In the Bartlett win, the Hawks had the ball with nine seconds left in regulation and the score tied. Fenton’s Ricky Lopez came up with the steal and took it to the basket for the game winner as time expired.

“Ricky has been one of our starters all year and he’s only a junior,” Fenton coach Chaz Taft said.

Fenton was again strong on defense in the win against Bartlett.

“We were steady on defense and took them out of their shots and their rhythm shots,” Taft explained. “We had a lot of deflections in that game and defensively we held them down.”

On senior night against Elgin, Fenton led 32-19 at intermission. “This was a good win for us,” said Taft. “It was our last home game besides the playoffs. Our defense turned into offense for us. Everybody was able to play. The seniors played well, which was good to see.”

In the Bartlett win, Andre Reed had 20 points, while Diamon King had 14 points.

King tallied 18 points in the win against Elgin, while Reed had 12 points.”

“I’m very happy with how we are playing and where we have come from as a program,” Taft said. “My

first year here we won eight games.

My second year, we won six and we had 11 last year. Now, we are 19-11.

We’re a team of juniors and seniors.

We’ll have 10 juniors who will have it kick in and be seniors next year.

“If you look at the good teams in DuPage County such as York and Benet, they have a freshman or sophomore once in a while on varsity, but it’s usually teams filled with juniors and seniors. We’re starting to get that now and next year we’ll have 10 seniors and eight or nine juniors. That will be very good.”

Fenton found out it is the No. 6 seed out of 20 teams in the Class 3A Grayslake North Sectional. The Bison will host a Class 3A regional, opening up against No. 11 seed Chicago Mather on Wednesday, March 4. The winner has a likely date with No. 3 sectional seed St. Viator for the regional title.

Addison Trail wrestlers compete at individual state meet AT-Willowbrook swimmers 10th at sectional

Addison Trail wrestlers John Asiuras, Jake Matthews and Nick Skamra finished their 2019-2020 seasons on the big stage at the IHSA Class 3A individual state meet in Champaign.

Matthews, a junior who competed in the 152-pound weight class, went 1-2 at the state meet. He opened the tournament with a 12-8 loss, but came back to win his first wrestle-back match with a pin before losing 10-4 in the next round.

Skamra, a senior, lost his first match in Champaign in the 182-pound division. He then came back to win 9-4 in his first wrestle-back before losing his next match.

Asiuras, a junior who qualified for the state meet’s 120-pound weight level, lost his first bout in Champaign by a 15-4 count. Asiuras then lost his wrestle-back match by a close 6-5 margin.

AT-Willowbrook boys swimming The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming co-op team finished its season by placing 10th in the team standings of Saturday’s 12-team Lyons Township Sectional with 38 points.

The team did not earn any berths in the upcoming IHSA state meet.

Swimmers who won events and met qualifying standards at the sectional earned berths in the state meet, which takes place this Friday and Saturday at Evanston High School.

AT-Willowbrook finished seventh in the 200-yard medley relay, with freshman Conor Craddock, senior Aidan Nichols, senior Marco Chaidez and sophomore Michal Niemirski swimming that event. The foursome completed the race in 1 minute, 44.55 seconds.

Junior Cole McGinnis placed 14th in the 200-yard freestyle race with his time of 1:54.78. Sophomore Matthew Burrow took 18th in the 200yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.30.

Nichols was 14th in the 50-yard freestyle, which he completed in 23.59 seconds. Junior Nick Mitchell was 16th in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:00.50.

McGinnis placed 17th in the 100yard freestyle with a time of 53.12.

Junior Sean Pienkos was 10th in the 500-yard freestyle, which he finished in 5:12.08.

AT-Willowbrook placed 10th in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:35.64 with Nichols, Burrow, Chaidez and Niemirski.

Craddock finished 12th in the 100yard backstroke at 57.93. Nichols claimed the team’s only individual top-10 finish when he took ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:02.86.

AT-Willowbrook placed eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:33.87, with McGinnis, Craddock, Chaidez and Niemirski comprising that quartet.

Jones competes at state bowling meet Warrior makes her third straight appearance in Rockford

Willowbrook senior Makaylah Jones competed as an individual in the IHSA girls bowling state meet, which took place Friday and Saturday in Rockford.

Jones bowled a six-game total of 1,114 on Friday and did not advance to Saturday’s finals. Jones began the day with a game score of 167. She added scores of 236, 193, 191, 167 and 160.

Jones also participated in the state meet during her sophomore

and junior seasons. Jones helped Willowbrook win sectional titles in 2018 and 2019. She also won three straight individual regional titles during the last three seasons.

She claimed her third straight individual regional victory at the Metea Valley Regional on Feb. 8.

Jones rolled a six-game of 1,256 at the event to claim a first-place regional medal for the third straight season.

Jones recently committed to attend Elmhurst College, where she will study nursing and be a member of the Bluejays’ women’s bowling team.

Brockie places sixth at state wrestling meet

Willowbrook junior Elijah Brockie earned a sixth-place finish in the 195-pound weight class of the IHSA Class 3A individual state meet, which ended on Saturday at the State Farm Center in Champaign. Brockie won two of five matches in Champaign. He won a 3-1 decision in his first match. He then earned a 5-3 victory in the quarterfinal round to advance to the semifinals. Brockie lost in the semifinal round. He then lost in the consolation semifinals before losing the fifth-place match.

Brockie finished the season with an overall record of 40-11.

Warriors finish conference season with a win at Leyden Stubblefield breaks program’s single-season scoring record

The Willowbrook boys basketball team finished its West Suburban Gold Conference schedule with Friday’s 6760 win at Leyden. The win moved the Warriors to 12-18 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

Willowbrook will finish the regular season with this week’s crossover game against a West Suburban Silver Conference opponent. The Warriors will begin the IHSA Class 4A post-season with a March 2 home game against West Chicago at the Willowbrook Regional in Villa Park.

The Warriors led Leyden 17-12 after one quarter and 30-26 at halftime. The Eagles trimmed Willowbrook’s lead to 46-44 by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Everett Stubblefield led the Warriors to the victory with 23 points, six rebounds and five steals. Stubblefield made three shots from 3-point range. As a team, Willowbrook made for of 20 attempts from 3-point territory.

Senior Sam Tumilty provided 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Sophomore Sean Paige delivered 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors swept both of this season’s conference games against Leyden.

Willowbrook earned its two other West Suburban Gold wins over Addison Trail and Downers Grove South. The War-

riors won their home game against the Blazers and claimed their road contest at Downers Grove South.

Stubblefield’s scoring output in Friday’s game broke the program’s single-season scoring record. Through Friday, Stubblefield scored 636 points this season. He broke the previous record of 631 points, set by Alonzo Verge during the 2014-15 season. Verge is now a member of the Arizona State University men’s basketball team.

Three nights before facing Leyden, the Warriors suffered a 92-66 conference loss at Proviso East. The Pirates held a 43-30 halftime lead. Proviso East built its lead to 74-54 by the end of the third quarter.

Stubblefield and Tumilty each scored 17 points in the Feb. 18 loss to the Pirates. Junior Amaris Hughes added eight points. Senior Deandre Holliday and Paige scored seven and six points, respectively.

If the Warriors win their post-season opener against West Chicago on March 2, they will face Glenbard East one night later in a regional semifinal.

Batavia and Glenbard West will square off in the other regional semifinal at Willowbrook; that game will take place on March 4. The regional final will be played on March 6.

Willowbrook is the No. 13 seed in the Addison Trail Sectional. West Chicago is the sectional’s No. 18 seed. Glenbard East is the sectional’s No. 2 seed.

Addison Trail girls basketball team loses to Glenbard West in regional Koulogeorgas, Valez earn all-conference honors

Sometimes, the opponent simply is a good team.

Addison Trail girls basketball coach Cory Little agrees with that assertion regarding Glenbard West.

The Blazers lost 62-14 to the Hilltoppers in the semifinals of the Class 4A Glenbard West regional in Glen Ellyn. Glenbard West is a No. 6 sectional seed at Hoffman Estates. Addison Trail was the No. 12 seed.

“They are a good team,” said Little.

“We played without Quiana Birmingham. When she’s on the floor she helps control the situation and the tempo is

different. Glenbard West shot well and they were hungry for it.”

Addison Trail finished 12-17 overall and went 5-7 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

“Being a first-year head coach and being able to implement things I have done as a coach for a long period of time, I watched girls come in here willing to work and saw growth,” said Little. “We talk a lot about grinding out games. They came to work every day.”

Little was effusive in his praise of senior veteran Demi Koulogeorgas.

“Demi is a senior leader,” he said.

“She missed no games and no practices. Demi worked hard to get better and all the girls followed that lead. We had a very positive atmosphere here. When things were going right or they were

going wrong, it was still positive.”

Little noted the Blazers were young this season with only two seniors on the roster. “We were mostly sophomores and juniors,” he said. “The will and the want is there and they expectations are there. They already want to get back in the gym to get better for summer ball and for next year. They bought into our expectations of grinding it out and getting better. That’s what I liked most about this team.”

In addition to Koulogeorgas, senior Katrina Bielanski also graduates.

“She didn’t play last year,” Little noted. “She came back this year and was a bright spot on the team. She came to work every day and kept the girls in good spirits, joking with them.

Fenton trailed by nine points early in the third quarter only to heat up and eventually take a five-point lead.

North Chicago then opened the fourth quarter with the first 11 points to take a six-point advantage. Fenton battled back and tied the game, which set up an exciting finish.

North Chicago had the ball on a sideline inbounds play with about 15 seconds left in regulation. The ball was inbounded to a North Chicago player who had 27 points in the game. She drove in, missed the shot, got her own rebound after a scramble and put it back in.

Instead of calling timeout, Mello allowed his girls to immediately roll with it.

“Knowing how much we rust our girls and also not wanting to allow North Chicago to set up their defense, we let our girls make a play,” Mello said.

Fenton sophomore Hailey Miller quickly inbounded to freshman Kaitlyn Hoffing, who took a couple dribbles and passed it up to Milano, a senior, who sprinted to her spot at the 3-point line. She caught the pass, settled herself and buried the shot.

“That is a moment Ashley and her teammates will never forget,” Mello said.

Fenton then dropped a 58-29 decision to Vernon Hills in the regional semifinals.

With just under a minute remaining in the game, Fenton took out its three seniors (Milano, Becky Millard and Joni Lucas).

“We have two more years with some of these kids. They are going to keep coming to work and continue to get better. He sky is the limit.”

“Mary averaged like 10 points and seven or eight rebounds a game,” said Little. “Demi was at seven points and 4.5 assists a game. Demi took over point-guard duties when Q went out.

She has done a good job with it. I give her a lot of credit. She stepped in and took it and went with it.

“Mary is only a sophomore. She does well scoring. She’s had some games where she scored and she is a good rebounder. It’s good that she has the tools to keep developing.

“The sky is the limit. She can score the ball inside and out. She was a sophomore on varsity and in certain games her inexperience showed. Now she has a year under her belt and already wants to get in the gym and get better.”

The Willowbrook girls basketball team finished its season with an overtime loss in its post-season opener.

The Warriors lost 69-63 to Batavia in a semifinal game at the IHSA Class 4A Batavia Regional on Feb. 18.

The Warriors ended the season with a 15-14 record.

Willowbrook trailed the Bulldogs 16-6 after one quarter and 28-21 at halftime. The Warriors rallied to tie the score at 34-34 with about two minutes left in the third quarter. Batavia held a 42-37 lead at the end of the period.

A barrage of 3-point shots from junior Annemarie Knudtson helped the Warriors take the lead during the fourth quarter. Knudtson made three 3-point shots in the fourth period.

Knudtson banked in a 3-point shot during the first minute of the fourth period to trim Batavia’s lead to 44-40.

Knudtson’s next 3-pointer cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 47-45 with about 6:10 remaining in the quarter. Knudtson’s next 3-pointer dropped Batavia’s lead to 53-52 with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter.

Willowbrook took a 56-55 lead when senior K’Aliyha Herron scored an inside basket with about 2:40 left

in the fourth quarter. Junior Stephanie Dasbach’s layup raised Willowbrook’s lead to 58-55 with about 1:50 to play in the fourth period. Batavia scored three straight points in the next minute to tie the game. The two teams went to the four-minute overtime period tied at 5858.

Batavia unleashed a 9-0 run to open the four-minute overtime period.

“We made a game out of it,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell after the season-ending loss. “Like any game, you expect to win. When you don’t win, you’re disappointed. Both sides played hard. We didn’t take care of the ball in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter. They [the Bulldogs] got back in the game and tied it up.”

Freshman Angelina Lizasuain provided the Warriors’ first points of the overtime period when she made a 3-point shot with about 1:35 to play.

Herron’s steal and basket cut Batavia’s lead to 67-63 with a little less than one minute remaining. Batavia made two of four free throws in the closing 30 seconds to pad its lead.

Knudtson, who scored 11 points during the fourth quarter, provided a team-high 18 points for the Warriors. She also handed out six assists.
