Warriors start their season

Willowbrook’s girls basketball team opened its season with a 51-50 loss to York on Friday night in Elmhurst. Senior Gracie Tumilty (No. 21) of the Warriors is pictured while driving toward the basket late in the fourth quarter. Tumilty drove to the hoop and scored to break a 47-47 tie. She was fouled on the shot and made the subsequent free throw to complete a three-point play that gave Willowbrook a 50-47 lead with 1:08 remaining. The Dukes made a free throw a few seconds later to cut the Warriors’ lead to 50-48. York delivered a three-point play of its own to take a 51-50 lead with 12.8 seconds to play. Junior Sophie Sullivan made six 3-point shots and poured in 25 points for Willowbrook. Senior Taris Thornton added 10 points. Daniel Sullivan, MD, most recently Chief Medical Officer of Elmhurst Hospital, has been appointed Chief Physician Executive for Edward-Elmhurst Health (EEH), a system in Chicago’s west and southwest suburbs that includes Edward Hospital in Naperville, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health.

Dr. Sullivan assumes the position previously held by Sanjeeb Khatua, M.D., who was announced as President/CEO of Unity Point Clinic, a division of the UnityPoint Health System in Iowa, in December.

Kimberley Darey, M.D. has been named Chief Medical Officer/Vice President of Medical Affairs for Elmhurst Hospital, replacing Dr. Sullivan. Dr. Darey had been Medical Director of the Elmhurst Hospital Family Birthing Center.

In his new role, Dr. Sullivan will provide leadership and oversight for quality and physician engagement across the system to drive improvements in clinical outcomes, quality, efficiency and patient experience. Dr. Sullivan is also Executive Vice President, Physician & Ambulatory Network for EEH and President of Edward Health Ventures.

Dr. Sullivan, who is board-certified in cardiology and interventional cardiology, joined the medical staff of Elmhurst Hospital in 1988. During his tenure, he has held many leadership positions, including Chief of Cardiology, Cath Lab Director, Chairperson of Internal Medicine and President of the Medical Staff.

Dr. Darey, board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN), has been on the medical staff at Elmhurst Hospital since 2010. In her role as Medical Director of the Family Birthing Center, which she began in 2015, she led physicians, nurses and other staff in the development and implementation of evidence-based best practices on the obstetrics unit and has been involved as a leader in ensuring quality practices in the OB-GYN department.

Dr. Darey earned her medical degree from the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and completed her OB-GYN residency at Saint Joseph Hospital Chicago.

Illinois Republicans name Don Tracy as new chairman

The Illinois Republican Party Central Committee on Saturday named Springfield attorney Don Tracy as its new chairman, replacing Tim Schneider, who had held the post for more than six years.

Tracy, a partner in the firm Brown Hay and Stephens, also served as chairman of the Illinois Gaming Board during former Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration.

“I ran for this position because I love Illinois—it’s my home— and I believe the ILGOP can be a tremendous catalyst for change in this state,” Tracy said in a statement after the election. “The upcoming election cycle can be monumental if we seize on the tremendous opportunities before us.”

Tracy was chosen over two other candidates: Mark Shaw, who is the Lake County GOP Chairman and president of the Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association, and Scott Gryder, the Kendall County Board Chairman.

Tracy is also the first party chairman since 1988 who is not from Chicago or the collar counties.

He now faces the challenge of unifying the state party organization, where divisions have erupted over the impeachment of former President Donald Trump.

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, of Channahon, was one of 10 Republicans in the House to vote in favor of impeaching Trump during his final days in office on a charge of inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, prompting dozens

of GOP county party chairmen in southern Illinois to issue a statement condemning his actions.

On Feb. 4, two days before the chairmanship election, the state party issued a statement saying that while it strongly disagreed with Kinzinger and other Republicans who voted for impeachment, “we will let the voters be the arbiters of any vote taken by an elected official.”

“The stakes of the 2022 election here in Illinois—defeating Gov. JB Pritzker and Sen. Tammy Duckworth, winning back congressional seats, and electing Republican judges to the Illinois Supreme Court—are too monumental to engage in a circular firing squad,” the statement read.

Republican U.S. Reps. Rodney Davis, Darin LaHood and Mike Bost all issued statements Monday praising the choice of Tracy as the new chairman.

“Illinoisans have had enough of the Democrats’ destructive policies in Springfield, and I know Don’s conservative leadership will help put the GOP on a path to help fix the many challenges our state faces,” Bost said in a statement.

“I am excited to work with Don and unite our party for victory in 2022.”

Democrats, on the other hand, responded to Tracy’s election by criticizing his ties to both Trump and Rauner, and by criticizing his tenure as chairman of the Gaming Board.

Tracy served as chairman from

February 2015 until June 2019 when he resigned following an Office of Executive Inspector General’s report that found he had engaged in improper political activity by making several campaign contributions while serving on the board, in violation of the Riverboat Gambling Act. “The Illinois GOP has deemed Don Tracy, a Trump supporter who resigned as the Illinois Gaming Board chair after steering illegal contributions to former Governor Rauner’s campaign, as their best hope to carry their party into the future,” Democratic Party of Illinois executive director Mary Morrissey said in a statement.

“It will be interesting to see if the Illinois Republican Party will continue to embrace questionable leadership, division and extremism or consider working with Democrats to find solutions that lift up workers and families across Illinois. We aren’t holding our breath.”

Republican Party spokesman Joe Hackler criticized the Democrats’ statement.

“Ms. Morrissey’s statement is rich given that the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois is Mike Madigan, the most corrupt politician in America,” Hackler said in an email statement. “Don Tracy looks forward to uniting the Republican Party in Illinois around a positive agenda of reform: ending corruption, restoring fiscal sanity, growing our economy, and standing for law and order.”

Local police chiefs weigh in on criminal justice reform bill

Last month, a criminal justice reform bill—House Bill 3653—was passed by both the state House and Senate.

The legislation, which was authored by the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis last summer, now goes to Gov. JB Pritzker for his signature or veto.

Locally, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) and State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) voted for the bill, while State Rep. Terra Costa Howard (D-Glen Ellyn) voted no. State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) did not vote.

Capitol News Illinois outlined the main provisions of this bill in a story published last month: Pretrial detention—Effective Jan. 1, 2023, all bail bonds and conditions of bail will be replaced by a system of pretrial release to be developed by the Illinois courts based on a detainee’s alleged crime, their risk of not appearing for their court date, and the threat or danger they may pose to the community if released.

Use of force—According to the bill, the General Assembly intends to establish statewide use-of-force standards by 2022 while making changes to what are acceptable and unacceptable uses of force in Illinois statute. Use of force is permissible only when an officer has determined it is necessary to defend either themselves or others from bodily harm when making an arrest.

When a suspect is attempting to escape, officers would not be permitted to use deadly force to stop them unless that person cannot be apprehended at a later date and is likely to harm others. The law prohibits certain uses of force. Chokeholds and restraints above the shoulders that can restrict breathing are banned, un-

less explicitly used as deadly force.

Qualified immunity—One of the largest changes to the bill was gutting a provision that would have ended qualified immunity for officers, eliminating their protection from liability in civil suits if they violated rights guaranteed in the Illinois Constitution. Instead, the legislation creates a yearlong Task Force on Constitutional Rights and Remedies, an 18-member body that will investigate and develop procedures to protect constitutional rights and remedies should those rights be violated.

The task force will specifically look at qualified immunity as enjoyed by law enforcement.

Police certification—A police certification provision backed by Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office was also added to the bill. It gives the state more power over who can be a member of law enforcement and makes it easier to decertify and terminate the employment of problematic officers. Before this legislation, the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board could

decertify an officer only if they were convicted of a felony or a limited set of misdemeanors such as offering a bribe, prostitution or criminal sex abuse.

The criminal justice omnibus bill grants ILETSB greater discretion to decertify officers based on whether a Certification Review Board determines they violated conduct guidelines. An officer could be decertified if it is determined they committed a felony or a disqualifying misdemeanor, even if they were never convicted or charged.

Body cameras—Under this legislation, the Law Enforcement Officer-Worn Body Camera Act is amended so that all law enforcement agencies must eventually use body cameras. The largest agencies must have body cameras in place by 2022, while all agencies, no matter how small, must have body cameras implemented by 2025.

Detainee rights—The bill expands rights of people who are taken into custody by police. Suspects in custody must be able to make three

phone calls within three hours of being taken into police custody. Every time they are detained in a new location, this right is renewed for the purpose of speaking to their attorney and notifying family and friends of their situation.

Overall reaction from police chiefs The bill has received mixed reviews from law enforcement officials from across the state, as well as from local police chiefs, such as Lombard’s Roy Newton and Michael Rivas, who recently took over in Villa Park.

When asked for his overall reaction to HB 3653, Rivas said, “I am not disappointed in the passing of a police reform bill or HB 3653. I think if you ask any police executive, they would be in favor of some type of police reform. The reform could be in the form of state/federal requirements for education or continuing education. Villa Park VFW Post 2801 Auxiliary announces winners in the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 Auxiliary recently finalized its Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen scholarship programs. The participants included students from Fenwick High School, York High School, Timothy Christian Middle School, Sandburg Middle School (Elmhurst), Glenn Westlake Middle School (Lombard) and Immanuel Lutheran School (Elmhurst).

Award winners received monetary gifts. They also received certificates that were distributed by their teachers.

The Voice of Democracy program provides high school students with the opportunity to express themselves by writing and recording an audio essay related to an annual patriotic theme. The 2020-21 theme was “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?”

Students can advance to four different levels—VFW Post, District, State and National. With each level of advancement, students can earn more scholarship funds for college.

The Villa Park VFW Post 2801 Auxiliary presented its first-place award to Lauren Schleiter, a senior at Fenwick High School. She received $250. Nicholas Kamenica, a sophomore at York High School, earned the second-place award and received $200.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest gives students in grades 6-8 an opportunity to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting an essay of 300 to 400 words. The 2020-21 theme was “What is Patriotism to Me?” The Villa Park VFW Post 2801

This is just one example of the irresponsible hyperbole I’ve heard surrounding the impeachment trial not only from socalled objective journalists such as Anderson Cooper, but from these impeachment managers. ***

So the CDC is now recommending double masking because it offers more protection against the virus.

What next? Wear three masks? Four masks? This is ridiculous. We might not get the virus, but we’ll probably die from suffocation. *** I read a good column in the Wall Street Journal by Daniel Henninger.

The author talked about how the House impeachment managers constantly refer to Donald Trump as a threat to “our democracy.” When regressives (I refuse to call them progressives) say “our democracy,” what the author says they really mean is their democracy. Must be the guilt complex kicking in over her green deal and wanting to rid the planet of farting cows. *** I keep reading in the police blotter about all the catalytic converter thefts.

My biggest question is, wherever they are being pawned, doesn’t the business owner know they are likely stolen, or maybe doesn’t care? For the most part, where else does one

get a catalytic converter? For once, and bite my tongue, I would like to see government regulation to prevent businesses from accepting catalytic converters—without proof of where they came from—in order to discourage their theft. *** I’m looking at some of the headlines from 2016 that predicted the stock market would crash if Trump was elected president. When Trump took office four years ago, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at about 19,700. As he departs, it’s about 31,000. On Trump’s first day in office, the NASDAQ stood at about 5,540.

On his last day in office, it was nearly 13,200. It was a bumpy ride, and stock values don’t mean everything, but we all know the media would be bashing Trump if the stock market was lower. “We will all need clarification on the bill language to ensure an officer knows what is legally allowed under the new bill,” he said. “There is confusing language that states: ‘Such force is necessary to prevent the arrest from being defeated by resistance or escape; the officer reasonably believes that the person cannot be apprehended at a later date …’

“Almost anyone can be apprehended at a later date regardless if they commit a heinous crime, so the officer could not use force to stop that person. This part of the bill should give pause to all persons when officers are dealing with violent offenders. Our job is to protect the public, and this part of the bill compromises our ability to do that.”

Specifically addressing the mandate that police will be required to wear body cameras by 2025, Newton said purchasing body cameras without any funding “will impact villages greatly.”

“A first-year purchase with storage for a body camera program for a nominal size department is $150,000; then a re-occurring cost each year, forever,” he said.

Rivas agrees.

“The mandated Body Worn Camera (BWC) section places an undue burden on all municipalities as an unfunded mandate by the state for every police department to have BWCs by 2025,” he said. “We strongly believe in the use of cameras to record incidents involving police officers. There is a section in the new bill that does not allow the officer to view the BWC footage prior to writing the police report.

“There was an additional approximately 30 more hours of in-service training that an officer will have to participate in each year. This is all on top of previous legislation that called for additional training.

And of course, all of these training mandates are unfunded, so more expense for the department and time off the street for officers to attend training.”

Additionally, Newton said he takes issue with provisions of the bill where someone can make an anonymous complaint against a police officer without any verifiable facts.

“The (police) department will then have to go to the expense and manpower constraints to have a complaint investigated that could be ‘made up’ or just because a person got mad over a ticket,” he said.

“In our law, due process and the right to confront an accuser is part of our process. This section eliminates that completely.”

Fully ending cash bail by 2023 is a particular requirement in the legislation that concerns Rivas.

“I truly believe parts of this bill will return persons arrested back into the community faster than the police officer can file the paperwork,” Rivas said. “This is not a good situation for the general public. The bill abolishes monetary bail. This means there would be zero incentive for a criminal to stop committing crimes if all they had to do was fill out paperwork during the arrest.”

Support for these portions of the bill However, Newton and Rivas pointed out there are parts of the bill with which they agree.

“There are many areas where the bill is justified and reforms are needed,” Newton said. “Of course, chokeholds and restraints above the neck are not necessary when confronting a non-violent offender.

A duty to intervene is a necessary component of the bill. Use of Force reporting is also a good thing and is necessary that department track their numbers so that abrasive officers can be dismissed or re-trained.

We are also in favor of certification review for officers who act outside the parameters of their duty or who are unfit to be in the profession.”

Both police chiefs also support first-responder assistance programs and social work programs.

“The best part of the new legislation revolves around Crisis Intervention Training (CIT),” Rivas said.

“Officers shall receive 40 hours of CIT during (training at) the (police) academy to give police recruits more tools in dealing with subjects in a mental/ emotional crisis.

“Also, the bill calls for enhanced data collection on the mental health crisis response. I took the CIT class last year (pre-COVID) and it was one of the best classes I have taken.”

Rivas said the law enforcement community is relieved language was removed from the original bill that compromises an officer’s rights and protection from frivolous lawsuits in the form of qualified immunity.

Newton added that the law enforcement community favors certification reviews for officers who act outside the parameters of their duty or who are unfit to be in the profession.

“The Illinois General Assembly did not have enough time to truly understand all parts of the bill nor the full impact it would have on municipal budgets in terms of training and equipment. The bill is over 700 pages long and legislators had just an hour left in the session to decide to pass the bill.”

Rivas added that “all of us” in the law enforcement community hope the governor will veto the bill “and mandate proponents of the bill to sit down with law enforcement officials to craft legislation that puts the safety of citizens ahead of detainees’ rights.”

“I am willing to have that conversation,” he said.

Responding to the same question, Newton replied, “I was disappointed. Our officers, and all officers, work hard every day to serve their communities, and for the Legislature to place language in the bill that is meant to ‘trick’ up officers is unfair.

“This language occurs in the Use of Force re-writes and the bodyworn camera restrictions. As the bill passed in the overnight hours without proper reading and input from law enforcement, the nadir was the legislators’ actions and celebrating as if they just won the lottery. Is this how a bill is supposed to pass? Is the law-enforcement community so egregious in their day-to-day duties that a celebration of passing took place?”

The Willowbrook boys basketball team tipped off its season with Friday’s 64-37 home loss to York in Villa Park.

The visiting Dukes held a 16-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter. York’s lead grew to 35-13 by halftime and 54-27 by the end of the third quarter.

Willowbrook junior Marquel Saleek led all scorers with 16 points. Saleek made three of six attempts from 3-point range.

He connected on three of five 2-point attempts and sank one of three shots from the freethrow line.

Senior Amaris Hughes, who made one of five shots from 3-point territory, added seven points for the Warriors.

Junior Alexander Simmons contributed six points, while junior Ryan Pegler scored four points.

Willowbrook made four of 18 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. York made six of its 13 attempts from 3-point range. The Warriors converted three of eight shots from the free-throw line. York drained 10 of 12 free-throw attempts.

Committee questions IDES director, staff over unemployment handling Fraud, delays among top issues addressed

Representatives of the Illinois Department of Employment Security testified before the Senate Labor Committee about fraudulent claims, continued delays in responding to unemployment applicants and a multibillion-dollar deficit in the fund that pays out benefits.

Acting Illinois Department of Employment Security Director Kristin Richards and members of the department’s staff fielded questions about the backlog that individuals face when they contact the agency with questions about their claims.

While the agency has seen fewer traditional unemployment claims, it has continued to see individuals file roughly 700,000 to 800,000 claims per month since August through the pandemic unemployment programs created through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act and other federal programs. Those include the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, and the Extended Benefits program IDES has put in place a callback system to reduce wait times for callers and a web form online for people to submit questions, but Richards said individuals still wait between one to two weeks for a callback from the agency, depending on the subject of the call.

“But I need to stress that if an individual has, for example, reached out to us about the status of their adjudication or appeal it could take four to six weeks because it’s working its way through the process and we need to connect with the right professional to help them. We realize that is less than ideal for individuals dying for an answer from IDES,” she said.

Richards said IDES is working to address those delays by training contractual staff members and adding full-time employees to the agency.

The agency has roughly 1,200 employees, Richards said, including about 750 contractual staff.

She said the agency has stopped slightly more than 1 million identity theft claims, including through the traditional unemployment system and the PUA system, but the agency doesn’t know the specific amount of money that has been paid out in fraudulent claims.

Some of the new unemployment programs created during the pandemic, especially the PUA program, left unemployment systems vulnerable, Richards said.

“That new program had no employer wage base to balance off of.

There was no second step, as a check and balance. Until wage verification documents were required, we saw that imposters were getting in,” she said.

Overpayment of benefits Richards also announced during the virtual committee meeting that the department will begin to send out waivers next week to individuals who had received an overpayment of benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, a federally funded program providing unemployment benefits to gig workers and others not traditionally eligible for them.

By law, claimants who were overpaid benefits must repay the money they were not due under unemployment laws. The waiver authority provided in federal law allows the state to waive the repayment in certain circumstances if the overpayment was not the fault of the claimant.

The overpayment waivers are available through the federal Continued Assistance for Unemployed Workers Act, or CAA, which was signed into law in December.

“If the waiver request is successful, we need to return those dollars that were recuperated to the claimant,” she said, adding the department has not yet developed a mechanism to return the money.

She said the agency is working on creating a questionnaire and request form for those eligible for a waiver, and the agency would consider those requests on a case-by-case basis.

Warriors open season with a one-point loss at York Sullivan connects on six 3-point shots, scores 25 points in her debut with Willowbrook

The Willowbrook girls basketball team started its season with Friday’s 51-50 loss at York. The Warriors held a 50-48 lead in the closing seconds, but the Dukes took a 51-50 lead on a three-point play with 12.8 seconds left in the game.

“The girls played well; they played hard; they got into the game,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell after the contest. “We expect to win games like this. I’m disappointed we lost. I know the girls are disappointed we lost, but we’re going to be a lot better going forward. I’m looking for a huge improvement.”

Junior Sophie Sullivan and senior Taris Thornton, who both played at Montini Catholic High School before transferring to Willowbrook at the start of the current school year, accounted for 35 points in Friday’s game. Sullivan’s 25-point effort included six 3-point shots. She made three of the 3-pointers in the first quarter, when she scored a total of 13 points.

Thornton contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Gracie Tumilty provided nine points. Senior Stephanie Dasbach scored six points and pulled down a team-leading 10 rebounds.

Harrell noted that the Warriors had their first practice of the season a little more than one week before Friday’s game. The team held its first practice on Feb. 3.

“It’s kind of rough,” said Sullivan of the Warriors’ limited number of practices before their first game.

Willowbrook’s district (District 88) waited longer than most other area districts to give the OK for its girls and boys basketball teams to begin practicing. “Through these practices, I feel like we bonded a lot. It’s going to come. There’s a lot we still have to work on. We’ll definitely put in a lot

of work.”

The Warriors led the Dukes 17-16 after one quarter and 29-27 at halftime. York took a 33-31 lead early in the third quarter, but Willowbrook mounted a 9-0 run to take a 40-33 lead. Dasbach started the run with a field goal. A 3-pointer from Sullivan and two straight baskets from Thornton gave the Warriors their 40-33 advantage.

York closed the third quarter with a free throw in the final minute, followed by a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

That 4-0 run cut the Warriors’ lead to 40-37 with eight minutes to play.

York scored four straight points early in the fourth period to cap an 8-0 run and take a 41-40 lead. Sullivan gave Willowbrook a 43-41 lead when she drained her sixth 3-pointer of the game with about 6:30 remaining.

Thornton made two free throws to push the Warriors to a 45-41 lead with 4:41 to play. The Dukes tied the game at 45-45 when they made a 3-point shot with about 3:07 on the clock. An inside basket gave the Dukes a 47-45 lead with 2:43 to play.

Thornton and Sullivan each made one free throw to pull the Warriors into a 47-47 tie. Tumilty’s driving basket gave Willowbrook a 49-47 lead.

Tumilty was fouled on the play.

She sank the foul shot to convert the three-point play and give her team a 50-47 lead with 1:08 remaining.

The Dukes made one free throw with 56.6 seconds to play. York scored the winning points after calling a timeout with 18.3 seconds left. Following that timeout, York senior Amaya Rufus delivered a three-point play to give the Dukes their 51-50 advantage with 12.8 seconds on the clock.

Sullivan went to the foul line with 6.6 seconds to play. She missed the front end of a one-and-one; York grabbed the rebound before there was a call of a held ball. The possession arrow pointed to York, which inbounded the ball after a timeout and ran out the clock.

The Warriors’ schedule this week includes games against Glenbard West, Addison Trail and Proviso West.

DuPage County Health Department reports 1,152 COVID-19 related deaths since March STAFF REPORT

The DuPage County Health Department’s daily COVID-19 update of Feb. 14 reported there have been 1,152 deaths related to the coronavirus in county residents since March 2020. The Feb. 14 update stated there have been 70,550 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county.

The Feb. 14 update noted 20 additional COVID-19 related deaths from the update from one week earlier.

The Feb. 7 update reported 1,132 deaths related to the coronavirus in DuPage County.

There have been 2,211 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths related to the coronavirus in Villa Park residents. Lombard has reported 3,704 cases and 51 deaths.

The DuPage County Health Department’s latest COVID-19 information is posted on its website at dupagehealth.org.

The county’s first death related to the coronavirus was reported on March 19, 2020.

As of Feb. 14, about 57 percent (662) of DuPage County’s 1,152 deaths related to COVID-19 involved residents 80 and older. About 93 percent of the 1,152 deaths involved residents 60 and older. None of the county’s deaths related to the coronavirus have involved a resident 19 or under.

The Feb. 14 update states there were 108 COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County during the month of January. The same update reports there were 167 county deaths related to the coronavirus in November, and 210 COVID-19 related deaths in the county in December.

The county health department notes that its figures are provisional and subject to change.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) daily update from Feb. 14 stated there have been 1,162,154 total cases of COVID-19 in the state, with 19,961 statewide deaths related to the coronavirus.

More than 17.1 million tests for COVID-19 have been performed in Illinois, according to the IDPH update of Feb. 14. The state has a total population of about 12.67 million.

All 11 of the state’s regions, including Region 8 (DuPage and Kane counties), are in Phase 4 mitigations of the state’s Restore Illinois Mitigation Plan.

The Feb. 14 IDPH update showed Region 8’s sevenday rolling test positivity average stood at 4.3 percent as of Feb. 11. According to the IDPH, the region had a daily test positivity rate of 3.7 percent on Feb. 11, with 300 positive tests out of 8,042 tests performed.

The region’s seven-day rolling test positivity rate stood at 6 percent on Feb. 1. It dropped to 4.9 percent on Feb. 6, before falling to 4.3 percent on Feb. 11.

Region 8’s seven-day rolling average of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has dropped throughout February.

The seven-day average stood at 218 on Feb. 13. On Feb. 4, that same average stood at 279.

The Feb. 14 report from the IDPH stated there have been 127,704 administered doses of COVID-19 vaccines in DuPage County. According to that report, 3.64 percent of the county’s population (33,780 out of a total reported population of 928,589) has been fully vaccinated for the coronavirus.

Warriors begin their season with a virtual meet against Downers Grove South Naumovsky takes first in two events; Placek earns the team’s top all-around score STAFF REPORT

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team opened its winter season with last week’s unique dual meet against the Downers Grove co-op team.

Instead of competing against each other in the same location, the two teams squared off in a virtual meet.

The Warriors performed at their school in the Feb. 11 meet, while the Downers Grove gymnasts performed at the same time in Downers Grove.

“As long as they are happy and competing, and as long as we can keep it going, we’ll do whatever we need to do to keep them in the gym,” said Willowbrook coach Deanna

Willowbrook’s girls gymnastics team began its season with last week’s meet against the Downers Grove co-op team. The two teams competed at the same time in different locations. The Warriors performed their routines at Willowbrook, while the Downers Grove gymnasts performed in Downers Grove. The photo from Willowbrook’s performance in floor exercises shows junior Tess Placek, who earned the Warriors’ top all-around score (30.6).

The Downers Grove team, which consists of gymnasts from both Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North high schools, earned a team score of 133.35 in the event.

Willowbrook posted a team score of 121.7.

Junior Bella Naumovsky provided the Warriors with first-place finishes in two events—the balance beam and floor exercises. Naumovsky’s routine

on the balance beam received a score of 8.7. Downers Grove’s best performance on the beam yielded an 8.5.

Naumovsky earned her victory in floor exercises—the final event of the meet—with a performance that earned a score of 8.8. Downers Grove’s top scorer in that event received an 8.75.

Willowbrook junior Tess Placek turned in her team’s top all-around score—a 30.6. Placek earned the Warriors’ best individual score on the vault (8.6) and the uneven bars (7.5).

She received scores of 7.0 on the balance beam and 7.5 in floor exercises.

riors earned an all-around score of 30.3. Ball opened the meet with an 8.0 on the vault. She added scores of 7.2 on the uneven bars, 6.9 on the balance beam and 8.2 in floor exercises.

Willowbrook sophomore Hanna Mitrick earned an all-around total of 27.95, which featured an 8.3 on the vault and a 7.1 in floor exercises.

Sophomore Molly Morris posted an all-around score of 27.5 for the Warriors. Her total included an 8.2 on the vault. Willowbrook senior Maeve Costello contributed a score of 8.3 on the vault.

"I have literally hundreds of comedy videos in my collection including a few featuring Chicago and national celebrities."
