Over the course of the pandemic, health care professionals have experienced unbelievable levels of stress and burnout. In the United States this year, one doctor on average dies by suicide every day, which is one of the highest suicide rates of any profession.

The issue captured national attention in April 2020 when Dr. Lorna Breen, a physician from Charlottesville, Va., who was working on the frontlines of the pandemic in New York City, tragically died by suicide.

I was an early proponent of online shopping. I lived in a rural community without much access to retail, so it was a natural fit. Student accused of posting threatening messages on Instagram directed at Willowbrook High School

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that a Willowbrook High School student has been accused of posting threatening messages on social media directed at the school.

The juvenile, a 15-year-old male who lives in Villa Park, appeared at a detention hearing where Judge Anthony Coco ordered that he be released to the custody of his mother. He has been charged with one count of disorderly conduct, a Class 4 felony.

On Dec. 14, the Villa Park Police Department received a call from the Willowbrook High School li-

An investigation into the matter alleges that the juvenile made an Instagram post that read “Friday this bitch gonna sound like a party.” It is alleged that the juvenile made an additional post that read “I’m shooting up the school” with an emoji of the number 100.

An investigation into the posts led authorities to the juvenile who was taken into custody later that day.

“For the second time this week (referring to last week), a juvenile

appeared before a judge charged with making a threat to a school,” Berlin said. “These threats are not harmless jokes or an excuse to blow off steam. They have a chilling effect not just on students, teachers and staff, but also on parents, siblings and the community as a whole.

“I cannot stress this enough: my office takes any threat of violence aimed at a school very seriously and anyone suspected of making such a threat will be investigated and charged accordingly. First and foremost, I commend the students at Willowbrook High School for alerting authorities to the alleged

posts. I thank authorities at Willowbrook High School for contacting law enforcement as well as the Villa Park Police Department for their quick response in this case.”

“We will continue to take any and all threats concerning our schools seriously and hold those accountable for stoking fear in our community,” Rivas said. “I want to thank Willowbrook High School for their continued dedication to student safety and for our great working relationship. I also want to thank our detectives, officers and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for bringing this incident to a quick peaceful resolution.”

The letter announcing this week’s special board meeting on Monday, Dec. 20, noted that four trustees—Jack Corkery, Jack Kozar, Deepasriya Kumar and Kevin Patrick—called for the meeting.

“It appears that the majority of the board has decided they want to

go in another direction,” stated Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone on Saturday, Dec. 18. “I’ll do everything I can to do what’s best for Villa Park.”

The village board has reviewed and evaluated Keehner’s performance each April. At that time, the village and Keehner have agreed to a one-year contract, According to the terms of the April 2021 contract, which Keehner signed on April 29, the village would pay Keehner an annual salary of nearly $186,000, as well as an annual vehicle allowance of $6,000.

The 2021 contract notes that Keehner is an at-will employee of the village, and that nothing in his contract shall prevent the board from terminating his employment at any time, with or without cause.

The contract also states that the village shall provide Keehner 60 days prior written notice of its decision to terminate the employment agreement.

Additionally, Keehner’s contract calls for the village to pay him 20 weeks total compensation if his employment contract is terminated early.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin has announced that a Villa Park man accused of illegally selling multiple guns on four separate occasions to under- Bruce Berrier cover police officers has been sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Bruce Berrier, 22, appeared in court in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay, who handed down the sentence.

On July 2, Berrier entered a plea

of guilty to one count of gunrunning, a Class 1 felony. On Dec. 4, 2020, Berrier appeared in bond court where bond was set at $300,000 with 10 percent to apply. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

Through the course of an ongoing investigation conducted by the North Central Narcotics Task Force into illegal activities, Berrier was identified as a suspect in the illegal selling of guns in DuPage County.

On Sept. 28, 2020, an undercover officer contacted Berrier through Snapchat about purchasing a gun from him.

The agent subsequently met with

Berrier and purchased a .22 caliber firearm and multiple rounds of ammunition from him. On three more occasions, the final being on Nov. 24, 2020, the agent purchased three additional firearms and ammunition from Berrier.

The illegal sales of the firearms took place in Roselle and Hanover Park. On Dec. 3, 2020, authorities executed a search warrant at Berrier’s home. He was taken into custody at this time.

“Armed violence continues to plague our communities causing citizens to live in fear of becoming the next victim of a violent crime,” Berlin said. “More often than not, the

guns used in these crimes are illegally obtained from people such as Mr. Berrier, who seek to line their own pockets at the expense of our communities’ safety.

Thankfully, the weapons Mr. Berrier sold did not make it into the hands of those who would use them to commit violent crimes.

“I commend the ongoing, pro-active work of the North Central Narcotics Task Force into illegal gun sales. While we will never know for sure, their work on this case may have prevented a tragedy from occurring.”

Berrier will be required to serve 75 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team raised its overall season record to 11-0 with last week’s 66-36 West Suburban Gold Conference win over Morton in Villa Park. The Dec. 14 victory gave the Warriors a conference record of 5-0.

Willowbrook built a 28-6 lead over Morton by the end of the first

quarter. The Warriors’ halftime lead stood at 37-17. Willowbrook’s advantage of 59-27 at the end of the third quarter triggered a running clock throughout the fourth quarter. If a team holds a lead of at least 30 points by the end of the third quarter, the fourth quarter proceeds with a running clock.

Senior Sophie Sullivan, who

connected on three shots from 3-point range, scored a teamleading 17 points for Willowbrook in last week’s win over the Mustangs. Sullivan scored her final points of the contest when she made a 3-point shot in the closing minute of the third quarter.

That shot gave her 1,000 points in her high school career. Sullivan played for Montini Catholic’s

varsity team during her freshman and sophomore seasons before transferring to Willowbrook.

Sophomore Calli Kenny added 15 points for the Warriors, while freshman Hannah Kenny scored nine points. Junior Sara Stout and sophomore Elle Bruschuk provided seven and six points, respectively.

Willowbrook’s boys basketball team earned a 59-49 non-conference win over Hinsdale Central on Friday night in Villa Park. The Warriors ended a four-game losing streak and improved their overall season record to 4-5. Willowbrook led the Red Devils 45-36 at the end of the third quarter. Senior Noah Campbell drained a 3-point shot to give the Warriors a 33-23 lead with less than two minutes to play in the opening half. The Red Devils scored the last four points of the half to trim Willowbrook’s halftime lead to 33-27.

Campbell sank a 3-point shot in the opening minute of the second half to give the Warriors a 36-27 lead. Senior Terrell Walker’s threepoint play raised Willowbrook’s lead to 41-29 with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Seconds later, Walker scored an inside basket to move the Warriors’ lead to 43-29 and lead Hinsdale Central to call a timeout.

The Red Devils cut the Warriors’ lead to 45-36 by the end of the third quarter. Hinsdale Central then scored five straight points during the first minute of the fourth quarter to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 45-41. The Red Devils added another basket to cut the Warriors’ lead to 45-43.

Commercials: The good, the bad and the bizarre

For a while during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, every advertisement—whether on traditional TV or radio, streaming online or on social media—sounded the same.

We continually heard the familiar catch phrases “Now more than ever” … “In these difficult times” … “In these challenging times … “During these uncertain times” … “In these unprecedented times” … “We’re here for you.”

And never forget: “We’re all in this together.”

Celebrate with COVID-19 caution during the holidays those gatherings.

There aren’t nearly as many people hospitalized for COVID-19 as there were last fall and winter because of vaccines. But it’s important to remain vigilant a while longer.

“Unvaccinated individuals are at higher risk of getting infected, transmitting the virus to others and becoming hospitalized or dying from COVID-19,” says Jonathan Pinsky, M.D., medical director of infection control and prevention at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

“The small family gatherings we missed last year can be much safer if all adults are fully vaccinated and boosted, and all children ages 5 and older are fully vaccinated,” says Dr. Pinsky.

Act now to ensure everyone eligible is protected by vaccination. As always, continue to take precautions like wash-

ing hands frequently, staying home when sick and keeping up on wellness checks and doctor visits.

It’s recommended everyone age 5 and older get vaccinated with the primary series, and everyone age 18 and older get a booster shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone age 18 and older who has been vaccinated get a booster shot at least 6 months after receiving the second Pfizer or Moderna shot or at least 2 months after the single Janssen (J&J) shot.

Preliminary lab studies have found a third dose of Pfizer vaccine provides significant protection against the Omicron variant.

Any of the COVID-19 vaccines authorized in the United States can be used for the booster dose.

Ardmore Ave., for parishioners and fellow Guild members to help children in need celebrate the holidays. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthji seems pretty level-headed for a liberal, but I think someone needs to tell him there is no “I” in team. His columns in the paper are flooded with “I” statements, and while his column is informative, it doesn’t need to be all about him. In other words, don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back. *** Thank you for your coverage of the $1.7 trillion Jobs Act. It is also newsworthy that there was very little GOP support for it. The act was created to help all Americans. *** I noticed New York and California have reinstated indoor mask mandates. These two states are even more backward and leftist than Illinois (if that’s possible), but even they are going to reevaluate these mandates by Jan. 15. I heard Pritzker on the news say he was going to keep the mask mandate in place and won’t provide a specific date when it will be reevaluated. He kept on referring to following the science and countless studies that prove masks work. I’ve never once heard him or Dr. Ezike provide specific science and data that unequivocally prove masks work. Whenever he does, he might want to share all that with those of us who have to live under this mandate and the 42 other states that don’t have indoor mask mandates. *** Bravo to the House January 6 committee. They recommended Mark Meadows be held in contempt. I love seeing people like him and Steve Bannon squirm.

I called a couple of weeks ago when I saw photos in the paper of high school basketball players wearing their masks under their chins. I looked at this week’s paper and saw the same thing. I personally think these players should not have to wear masks at all. Obviously, the officials aren’t enforcing this stupid mandate, anyway. Good for them! *** Whether you like Trump or not, the fact is he got things done. If he hadn’t pushed the COVID-19 vaccine, I’m sure Biden would still be talking about it and we’d be wearing hazmat suits. *** The Biden administration either ignores any problem or they lie about them and hope they go away.
