“It is hard to believe that Dec. 10 marked one year since the passing of District 88’s beloved Superintendent, the late Dr. Scott Helton.

“It has been a challenging year, filled with obstacles, adversities and trying to under- Dr. Scott J. Helton stand situations we nevD88 er imagined we would Superintendent face. Scott was larger than life, and it is difficult to summarize his impact. When envisioning the characteristics of an ideal Superintendent, the following attributes come to mind: Someone who will advocate for all students – even when what’s right might not be what’s popular; someone who connects with stakeholders; and someone who champions moving education and student success forward. Scott embodied all of those qualities – and more.

“Scott had more than 33 years of experience in education and served in a variety of capacities, including as Principal of Addison Trail for 11 years and as Superintendent of District 88 since 2012. Villa Park Village Board members voted 6-1 during the Dec. 6 board meeting to adopt an ordinance that approves a letter of intent for the purchase and development of 100110 S. Villa Ave. The site, which used to be the home of A.K. Mulch & Firewood, will reportedly be developed into a high density, mixed-use residential community that includes over 200 apartments.

Catalyst Partners, a limited liability company based in Wisconsin, submitted a proposal to buy the property from the Village of Villa Park for $2.1 million. Catalyst Partners intends to invest about $50 million to construct approximately 210 apartments, 10,000 square feet of com-

mercial space and a minimum of 100 public parking places at the site.

The 100-110 S. Villa Ave. site is located on the west side of Villa Avenue, just north of the Great Western Trail. The village purchased the site in 2020 and sold the property at 631 E. Wildwood Ave. to A.K. Mulch & Firewood. The business then relocated to the site on Wildwood Ave. The village bought the 100-110 S. Villa Ave. site to provide additional public parking. The village also purchased the property to achieve the goals and objectives of its redevelopment plan for the area. The village board approved that plan in 2009, and designated a TIF (Tax Increment Financing) Redevelopment Project Area in an area including the 100-110 S. Villa Ave. property. That TIF designation will be in effect until 2032.

TIF status allows municipalities to utilize future property tax revenues to fund improvements in an underdeveloped area.

The village board’s approval of

the letter of intent advances the process of the village working with Catalyst Partners to negotiate a redevelopment agreement providing for the terms and conditions for the project’s construction.

According to information provided by the village, the proposed project at the 100-110 S. Villa Ave site will feature apartments that offer energy-efficient appliances, balconies and designer cabinetry. The project will also include on-site management, shuttle service to Villa Park’s Metra station, enclosed parking and an outdoor area with a pool, fireside lounge and green space.

Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone joined five village trustees—David Cilella, Jack Corkery, Deepa Kumar, Christine Murphy and Kevin Patrick—in voting in favor of the ordinance that approves the letter of intent for the purchase and redevelopment of the site. Trustee Jack Kozar voted against the ordinance.

Moments before the vote, Kozar said that if the rest of the board sup-

ported the project, he too would ultimately get behind it. He said he was voting against the ordinance because he didn’t like the procedure in which the proposed sale was handled. He said the village should have listed the property in the commercial market. Kozar said that instead of listing the property commercially, the village posted it online for about three weeks.

Cuzzone responded that the property was listed for more than three weeks. Cuzzone also stated that other developers had discussed the site with village officials. None of those discussions, he said, yielded any deals.

In another vote during the Dec. 6 meeting, board members voted unanimously at the end of the meeting to approve a labor agreement between the village and the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council related to a contract for the village’s sworn police officers. The approved agreement will be in effect through April 30, 2025.

The Willowbrook Student Council organizes the initiative, which gives the school’s staff, departments and clubs an opportunity to sponsor local children and families in need. This year’s Warrior Project collected toys and needed items for 27 children. Additionally, more than $1,000 in gift cards was provided to support the York Township Food Pantry. The donations were delivered to the food pantry on Dec. 7.

COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations increase locally The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is urging residents to continue to take action to protect themselves and the community against the spread of COVID-19. This is the result of significant increases in COVID-19 cases and related hospitalizations in DuPage County, and across the U.S. As of Dec. 7, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 3,351 COVID-19 cases in DuPage County over the last 7 days, which represents an increase of 126 percent from the previous week.

There were also 190 individuals hospitalized in DuPage County related to COVID-19 illness, which represents a 52 percent increase (or 65 additional patients) since Nov. 30. Positivity rates have also been steadily rising and are now at 6.26 percent.

As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rise, DCHD is reminding residents that there are simple, practical steps you can take to protect yourself, your family, co-workers, and friends.

Get vaccinated and boosted, wear a well-fitting, high-quality mask when you are in indoor public places—especially in crowded places and poorly ventilated spaces, and get tested to minimize chances you’ll be the one bringing COVID-19 to a gathering.

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, 70 percent of eligible residents over 12 years old in DuPage County have been fully vaccinated and 78 percent of the total population has received at least one dose.

All three COVID-19 vaccines currently authorized in the U.S. continue to be effective in reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death, including protection against the Delta variant which continues to be the main variant currently circulating.

DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala shared, “while much remains unknown about the severity, transmissibility, and impact on immunity with the Omicron variant, we do know what works— masking, distancing, getting vaccinated including getting a booster and getting tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19.”

According to DuPage County COVID-19 dashboard graphs reflecting cases by vaccination status and severity, over 97 percent of hospitalized and deceased COVID-19 cases between mid-December 2020 to the end of November 2021 occurred in persons not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

These prevention strategies are widely available and increasingly important as the holiday season approaches.

Ayala stressed “it is important to make sure everyone is doing their part in protecting their health and the health of those they are celebrating with this holiday season.”

Fraud According to information provided last week by the Villa Park Police Department, police reported 11 incidents of residents being a victim of fraud.

Department will take part in holiday enforcement effort from Dec. 17 through Jan. 3

The Villa Park Police Department recently announced it will participate in a statewide impaired driving awareness campaign that will include increased traffic patrols.

The holiday enforcement effort, which will run from Dec. 17 through Jan. 3, is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

“Driving impaired, whether under the influence of alcohol or drugs, can have catastrophic consequences

and is illegal in every state,” said Villa Park Sgt. James Cihak. “Not only do you put yourself at risk, but the lives of others as well.”

If your holiday celebration will involve alcohol or other impairing substances, plan ahead for a sober ride home and remember to buckle up—it’s your best defense against an impaired driver.

Keep the following tips in mind to help ensure a safe and joyful holiday season: • Before you head to the par-

ty, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride-sharing service to get home safely.

• If available, use your community’s sober ride program.

Warriors close out rough week with a close loss at Morton Saturday’s conference loss sends Warriors to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the WSGC

The Willowbrook boys basketball team suffered three losses last week, including Saturday’s narrow 66-64 West Suburban Gold Conference loss at Morton. Through Saturday, the Warriors held an overall record of 3-5 and a conference mark of 1-1.

Willowbrook began the week with an 87-63 non-conference loss at Naperville Central on Dec. 7. The Warriors dropped a 74-55 non-conference decision at Lake Park on Friday night.

Senior Marquel Saleek scored a team-high 23 points for the Warriors in the loss to Naperville Central. Senior Noah Campbell, who made three 3-point shots in the game, added 13 points.

Senior Ryan Pegler drained a pair of 3-point shots to provide six points.

Naperville Central, which scored 20 points in each of the game’s first three quarters, held a 20-17 lead after one quarter and a 40-28 edge at halftime. The Redhawks extended their lead to 60-43 by the end of the third quarter.

Friday’s loss to Lake Park was much closer than the final score indicates. The Warriors trailed the Lancers 47-43 in the closing seconds of the third quarter. Willowbrook missed a 3-point shot with a few seconds left in the period.

Lake Park rushed the ball down the court and made a 3-point shot at the buzzer to take a 50-43 lead with eight minutes to play.

The Lancers made 13 free-throw attempts during the fourth quarter.

“It was a lot closer than the final score shows,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins after Friday’s loss to Lake Park at the Lancers’ west campus in Roselle. “They started running their offense as a delay. It forced us to go into a trap.

Unfortunately, we committed a lot of fouls, and they got to the freethrow line. I thought we competed hard. When the momentum swung at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth, we didn’t get it back on our side.”

The Warriors made 21 of 23 free-throw attempts during Saturday’s game.

Willowbrook will play one game this week—this Friday’s non-conference home game against Hinsdale Central.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the West Suburban Gold Conference following three convincing victories last week.

The Warriors began their week by pounding Leyden 77-20 in a Dec. 7 conference game in Villa Park. One night later, Willowbrook earned a 53-32 non-conference win at Maine West. The Warriors concluded their successful week with Friday’s 51-20 conference win at Hinsdale South.

Twelve Willowbrook players scored during last week’s win over Leyden. The Warriors held a 23-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The lead grew to 42-9 by halftime.

Senior Sophie Sullivan scored a team-high 14 points for the Warriors in their victory over the Eagles. Freshman Hannah Kenny added 13 points. Sophomore Elle Bruschuk provided 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Rimon Kari scored nine points, while juniors Angie Lizasuain and Sara Stout

both supplied eight points.

The Warriors led Maine West 15-6 after one quarter and 24-16 at halftime. Willowbrook’s lead stood at 36-25 with eight minutes remaining. The Warriors delivered a 17-7 surge in the fourth quarter.

Sullivan, who made seven of 17 field-goal attempts, scored a teamhigh 15 points in Willowbrook’s win at Maine West. Sophomore Calli Kenny scored 10 points, while her sister Hannah added nine points. Bruschuk and Stout both

scored eight points. Stout also recorded a team-leading 10 rebounds.

Junior Nina Nytko added three points by making three of four freethrow attempts.

The Warriors led Hinsdale South 12-5 through one quarter of Friday’s conference game. Willowbrook raised its lead to 29-9 by halftime.

Sullivan and Calli Kenny both scored 13 points in Friday’s win over the Hornets. Sullivan made three of seven attempts from

3-point range. Kenny made one 3-point shot and sank both of her attempts from the free-throw line.

Bruschuk contributed eight points and seven rebounds in Friday’s victory. Hannah Kenny scored seven points, while Kari delivered five points.

Willowbrook’s schedule this week includes a conference home game against Morton. The Warriors will open play at Wheaton North’s Falcon Holiday Classic on Dec. 22.

Thank you for spreading your cheerful song during this holiday season. We really loved it! *** Democrats are divisive and use any means possible to accomplish their socialist agenda. The next big push will be to send everyone, including illegal citizens, a ballot to put in the ballot box by the next election. If you can’t win the game, change the rules. *** Now that Jussie Smollett has been found guilty of falsely reporting a hate crime, I was hoping we would be spared hearing about this narcissist for a while. Oh, but no. He’s going to appeal. *** According to the U.S. Labor Department Inspector General, about $872 billion (billion with a b!) was allocated to unemployment benefits in the last year. About 10 percent of that money was estimated to be paid “improperly, with a significant por-

tion attributable to fraud.” Something like $87 billion in money intended for unemployment benefits during a pandemic was lost to fraud in the last year? That’s crazy. How many wellpaid people work in government? A lot, yet they can’t keep track of tens of billions lost to fraud? What a disgrace. I wonder if our governments (federal and state) do as good of a job tabulating votes. *** Two weeks to slow the spread.

His claim was always a joke. There have been more COVID-19 deaths under Biden than under Trump, and that’s with vaccines. What happened to the media’s running death counts? *** On Sunday, Dec. 5, Trump admitted in public that he fired James Comey because he would not have survived as president of our great country. There were investigations under way that would have proved his treason and he would have been removed from office. Finally, Trump has told something true! There will

be more “truths” revealed as the investigation continues into his “new” Trump organization. We know he won’t be able to be president in 2024, so it really doesn’t matter. It’s just nice to be able to prove that he lied to all of us for four years. *** I like how the Chicago Department of Public Health issues these weekly COVID-19 travel advisories. The advisory now stands at 40 states. I’d like to issue a travel advisory to Chicago, and not because of COVID. It’s because of the increased risks of getting shot, assaulted or robbed, and because no one should give one penny to support a city run by an incompetent mayor like Lori Lightweight. *** I read about how Pfizer and BioNTech are working on a vaccine for the Omicron variant that they hope to have available by March. By that time, I’m sure we’ll have the next new bogeyman variant and need a new vaccine for that one. How many vaccines and booster shots are we supposed to get?

*** Dine-in and fast-food restaurants closed to interior dining last year when the pandemic hit. Understandable at the time because it was done out of “an abundance of caution” from so-called experts. But it is a sad state of affairs that a little over a year later, many of these same places are closed to eat in because now they are stating a lack of staff. I have encountered many fast-food places and at least one restaurant that is too short-staffed to keep the doors open.

And many of these places are hiring, so don’t tell me that if anyone really wants a job they can’t find one.

And on a side note, think of the pollution caused by the throngs of cars waiting in long lines at the drivethrough. *** It’s interesting how our government can suddenly close air travel from certain countries, but do nothing about securing our southern border. It’s also interesting how Democrats whined that Trump was a racist and a xenophobe for banning travel-

ers from certain countries. Biden did the same thing. Where’s the whining now? And everyone who flies into the country must be tested for COVID-19, but that testing won’t apply to people who simply walk across our border with Mexico? As others have said, it makes no sense to double-lock your front door while your back door is wide open. *** President Biden has been in office 11 months and Trump isn’t president anymore. Now is the time for my comrades on the left to elaborate on how much better things are instead of wasting time practicing their Trump bashing. They sound like a broken record as they have for the past five or six years. Go for it, comrades.

Peril at the top of Illinois GOP ticket

By Jim Nowlan Candidates for one elective office can affect the outcomes for others on the same party ticket.

For example, an unattractive or goofy candidate at the top of the ticket can depress turnout of the party faithful, thus depriving all candidates down the ballot of their votes. That is what scares the dickens out of Illinois Republican Party leaders, who appear thus far impotent to do anything about such possibilities.

At the top of the 2022 ballot in Illinois is the office of U.S. senator, held by Democrat Tammy Duckworth, who seeks re-election. As I have written elsewhere, who would want to run against an unobjectionable woman who had her legs blown off while piloting an Army helicop-

ter in Iraq, defending her country?

I have not heard of any credible types who are willing, most likely, to fall on their swords in a race against Sen. Duckworth. This increases the chances that a nut case could file petitions and become the GOP nominee. It has happened before. In 1986, Illinois Democrats nominated two unknown radicals with good ballot names (Janice Hart and Mark Fairchild) to the state ticket, which assured the defeat of former U.S. Senator Adlai Stevenson in his bid for governor.

Next on the ballot is governor.

The incumbent JB Pritzker has more money than Croesus, and is willing to spend it to be reelected.

At this time, there are four GOP candidates: • Darren Bailey, a folksy, very conservative downstate, anti-vax lawmaker who has the passionate support of the important home school and Christian school net-

work, probably more effective than any GOP network.

• Successful, suburban businessman Gary Rabine (last name pronounced with two “long” vowels), a Trump supporter.

• Paul Schimpf, a retired Marine JAG officer and former state senator from the Metro East St. Louis region, and • Jesse Sullivan, a 35-year-old, telegenic All-American sort who has made some money in the Silicon Valley, yet trumpets his roots, home and family in picturesque rural Petersburg.

At present, Bailey appears far ahead of the other three, yet the primary isn’t until late June. I see quite a few Bailey yard signs in my travels around central Illinois. Yard signs spread across downstate are a decent indicator of a strong network of supporters, good organization, and the potential to raise some money.

Update on the Omicron variant and my global vaccination efforts

By Raja Krishnamoorthji As we continue to track outbreaks of the Omicron COVID-19 variant across the world and learn more about its risks, the importance of Americans getting vaccinated is more evident than ever.

As I recently told Crain’s Chicago Business, to truly end this pandemic it is not enough to achieve widespread vaccination here in the United States.

This pandemic only ends when it ends everywhere.

As first demonstrated by the Delta variant and now Omicron, which was first identified in South Africa, so long as the Coronavirus can spread anywhere, the potential for new variants is a danger to everyone everywhere.

New threats will continue to arise as long as global and domestic vaccination efforts fail to achieve widespread inoculation.

That’s why I introduced the Nullifying Opportunities for Variants to Infect and Decimate (NOVID) Act earlier this year to ensure that the United States would lead the way in a global vaccination program to end this pandemic. I’m continuing to work with President Biden and my colleagues in

Congress to expand our vaccination efforts to end the pandemic not just here at home, but across the world.

Cure SMA’s ‘Hope on the Hill’ event I was honored to attend the recent “Hope on the Hill” event hosted by Cure SMA—an organization based in my district—to raise awareness about spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a neuromuscular degenerative disease. Cure SMA has already led tremendous progress in its mission. Today, 38 states, including Illinois, screen for SMA, covering nearly 85 percent of all babies born in this country.

I am committed to Cure SMA’s mission. This past summer, I was happy that the U.S. House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation that I cosponsored, the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act (H.R. 482).

This bill helps provide resources and technical assistance to state newborn screening programs and labs.

I was also pleased to cosponsor the Better Care Better Jobs Act (H.R. 4131) to provide more funding for home care and community-based services, which individuals with SMA rely on to help them daily. I’m happy to announce that portions of H.R. 4131 were included in

the Build Back Better Act that was passed in the House in November.

My bicameral letter to the Department of Education on student voter registration Last week, I partnered with Sen. Cory Booker in leading a letter to the U.S. Department of Education with more than two dozen members of Congress to call for improved student voter registration programs from institutions of higher education.

The Higher Education Act requires that any institute of higher education that receives federal financial aid funds distribute voter registration materials.

Our letter requests that voter registration information distributed by universities reflect the current voter registration information, including online registration and registration deadlines, and that universities adopt best practices for notifying students of deadlines.

Our democracy is based on the foundation of equal access and full participation in our electoral system, including from young people. We need to ensure that voter registration is a clear and accessible process for college students, many of whom are first-time voters. The Department of Education should make every effort to facilitate student voter registration.

My insider lobbyist, legislator and political junkie friends say the only type who has a chance against Pritzker is one who can appeal to women in the suburbs. In 2018, the 6½ suburban counties around Chicago cast a total of 2.1 million votes; those in the 95 counties “downstate” cast 1.5 million. Surveys report that college-educated women, though not enthusiastic about abortion, strongly oppose (around 75 percent; various polls) overturning Roe v Wade, as a women’s rights issue. The four GOP aspirants are all pro-life.

And then there is the matter of money to go up against “Croesus,” who spent $175 million of his own moolah to win the top state office in 2018. The state GOP lacks two nickels to rub together. So, all political junkie eyes are on billionaire Ken Griffin, who has more money than even Croesus, and who has declared he will spend it to beat the guv.

But Griffin’s political people have found no candidate as yet. I am told Griffin prefers newcomers to old politicians.

I think the ideal GOP candidate would be a credible, law-and-order prosecutor (think Jim Thompson in the 1970s), because law and order will be a leading issue in 2022. Suburbanites are scared witless by the violence in the city.

Lacking such, or a consolidation

of Sullivan, Schimpf, Rabine into one candidacy, Bailey wins the primary, at least as of right now. But in the November general election, Bailey would likely be the darling of downstate, while falling flat in the ’burbs, winning an enthusiastic 40 percent of the total vote.

So, a possible doofus at the top, with Bailey just below, could spell disaster for other races down the long ballot, because of depressed GOP turnout. For example, I have an interest in two important Illinois Supreme Court races, located in mostly suburban districts. But voters do not go to the polls, or not, because of unknown Supreme Court candidates.

Thus, these competitive races, found at the very bottom of the ticket, could be determined at the top of the ballot.

Illinois GOP leaders should get on their knees to top-drawer citizens who might be willing, out of a sense of noblesse oblige, to take on a likely losing U.S. Senate race, and hope that a candidate who can appeal in the suburbs will emerge from the gubernatorial primary.
