A holiday meal for 50 at VFW Post 2801
Villa Park post serves food and holiday cheer to recruits on Thanksgiving Day
STAFF REPORT
Villa Park’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 welcomed 50 recruits from Naval Station Great Lakes on Thanksgiving Day. A group of dedicated volunteers helped to serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal to the recruits, who are graduating from boot camp this week. The post, which is located at 39 E. St. Charles Road, has provided a Thanksgiving meal to recruits from Naval Station Great Lakes for several years. The holiday celebration was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The recruits who spent Thanksgiving Day at the post last week enjoyed donuts, pastries, coffee and juice during the morning. At noon, they sat down for a full holiday meal. Several organizations and businesses contributed to the post’s effort of holding this year’s Thanksgiving festivities for the recruits. Those groups included the Kiwanis Club of Villa Park, the Rotary Club of Villa Park, Tri-Town YMCA, Mike’s Market of Villa Park, Kuppie’s Bakery of Villa Park, Costco, Walgreens and Panera. Additionally, the Villa Park Police Department donated cell phones for the recruits to use to reconnect with loved ones. The recruits had not been able to speak to or have online contact with their families and friends since they Lindsey Rugg of the Willowbrook softball team is pictured while atbeganFreshman boot camp several weeks ago. tempting to score a run during School District 45 provided laptop Friday’s game at Downers Grove South.
