Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 held its annual Veterans Day observance last week. The speakers included Jim Blankshain (pictured), the post’s commander. Blankshain noted how people frequently thank him for his military service.

“My response is usually, ‘I’m an American, and I was proud to serve,’” he said. The post honored all veterans of the United States Armed Forces during last week’s ceremony. It also paid a special tribute to longtime post member Charles “Sid” Bergh, who passed away in October at the age of 94. Bergh, who was the post’s last surviving World War II veteran, served for many years as the master of ceremonies for the post’s Veterans Day and Memorial Day services. The main room at the post, which is located at 39 E. St. Charles Road, had been known as the Oak Room. During last week’s service, the post announced it was renaming the room to the Charles “Sid” Bergh Room. See story and photos on Page 4.

Governor signs new ‘Disaster Proclamation’ DuPage area remains rolled back to Tier 2 mitigations

Citing Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) data on the continued increase of COVID-19 cases across the state, Governor JB Pritzker signed a new Disaster Proclamation on Friday, Nov. 13. The Proclamation extends the Governor’s previous state-wide declaration through Dec. 12 and also extends all Restore Illinois Phase 4 orders, according to a release from the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI).

Another Executive Order was signed by the governor to modify and extend the moratorium on residential evictions.

The preliminary IDPH data shows a seven-day statewide positivity rate (the number of positive COVID-19 tests as a percent of total tests) increased to 13.2 percent. The percent of cases by county can be found on the state’s coronavirus website.

Region 1, 5, 7 and 8 (DuPage County) remains rolled back to “enhanced Tier 2 mitigations,” while all other regions in the state are back to enhanced Tier 1 mitigations. Phase 4 guidelines are available from the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (IDCEO). For more information, contact IDCEO at (800) 252-2923.

Public meetings will continue to be held remotely as long as certain requirements are met.

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, there were 33.336 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 653 deaths. Since Saturday, there were 732 new cases and three deaths related to COVID-19, a female in her 80s, a male in his 80s and a male in his 50s.

The DuPage Health Department announced that there were delays with the Illinois Department of Public Health and therefore, today’s data may be incomplete.

Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 held its annual Veterans Day service last week. The Nov. 11 observance at the post, located at 39 E. St. Charles Road, honored all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. The service also paid a special tribute to longtime post member Charles “Sid” Bergh, who passed away in October at the age of 94.

Bergh was the post’s last surviving member who served during World War II. He was a radio operator and gunner on an escort carrier—the USS Croatan—in the Atlantic Ocean.

Bergh, who served the post in numerous capacities, was the longtime master of ceremonies of the post’s Veterans Day and Memorial Day observances. This was the first of those services since his death.

“Sid will be missed,” said Jim Blankshain—the post’s commander— during the service, which was attended by members of Bergh’s family. The post announced during last week’s Veterans Day event that its main room—known as the Oak Room— would be renamed to the Charles “Sid” Bergh Room.

“This room was a place where he did so many things, and helped us enjoy so many things,” said post member Jerry Hughes during the service.

Hughes, who served during the Korean War, became acquainted with Bergh through the post and knew him for decades.

“We had a lot of things in common,” said Hughes.

The plaque that will stand outside of the renamed room notes that Bergh loved to be the master of ceremonies.

Hughes presented that plaque and a certificate to Bergh’s daughter—Lynn Borge—near the end of last week’s service.

“The joke was, you don’t give Sid the microphone,” said Borge of her father after the service. A Villa Park resident, Borge recalled many visits to the post while growing up. Those visits included weekly trips to the post’s Friday night fish fry.

The attendees at last week’s service included Villa Park Village Trustees Nick Cuzzone, Cheryl Tucker and Robert Wagner, as well as State Sen. Tom Cullerton, who served as Villa Park Village President from 2009 to 2013.

While serving as village president, Cullerton co-hosted a television program with Bergh on Villa Park’s community access channel. The duo recorded the program at Villa Park Village Hall.

“If I introduced the show, it was the Tom and Sid Show,” said Cullerton following the service. “If he introduced it, it was the Sid and Tom Show.

That was always our joke to start the show.”

Cullerton added that recording the weekly program with Bergh was a highlight of his time as village president.

“That was just a hoot—one of my favorite memories; it was great,” said Cullerton.

Early in the service, Blankshain noted the COVID-19 pandemic’s devastating effect on the post. The pandemic has canceled the post’s

revenue-generating events, including bingo night, the Friday fish fry, and numerous banquet rentals.

“We need your support now, more than ever,” said Blankshain, who mentioned that the post relies on its volunteers and members of the community.

“The coronavirus has crippled us because of our closures. Any help sure would be appreciated.”

Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2801 will hold a seminar for new gun owners on Thursday, Dec. 3. The seminar will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the post, which is located at 39 E. St. Charles Road.

The seminar costs $50 per person, payable in advance by cash or check.

There are no refunds.

One of the busiest travel times of the year is coming up next week. The Villa Park Police Department cautions motorists to buckle up and drive sober to make sure that everyone gets to the Thanksgiving table safely.

“On regular days and holidays alike, law enforcement too often see the results of driving impaired and not wearing a seat belt,” said Villa Park Police Sgt. James Cihak. “They are both tragic and preventable.

Whether you’re driving cross-country or across the street, please remember to wear your seat belt and make a plan for a sober ride home.”

Throughout the year, many traffic deaths and injuries could be prevented with the click of a seat belt or the choice to designate a sober driver.

According to information provided by the Villa Park Police Department, more than 30 percent of motor-vehi-

cle crash fatalities in Illinois involve an alcohol-impaired driver. Additionally, data shows drug-involved driving is on the rise.

To combat these trends, the Villa Park Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies in a statewide effort to save lives by stepping up enforcement of seat belt and impaired driving laws.

Motorists will see increased safety patrols beginning Nov. 20, and running through the Thanksgiving holiday through the early morning hours of Nov. 30.

The holiday enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

Edward-Elmhurst Health: Managing your teen’s anxiety during the pandemic Because of the global pandemic, the world is full of more unknowns than ever before. Everything feels new and different, and with the pace at which things are changing, everyone is living outside their comfort zones.

This is causing anxiety for many, which is a normal reaction to dealing with the many life changes people are experiencing. For children and teenagers, certain components of this new world can be especially

anxiety-producing, such as: Social distancing: The impact of loss of leisure time and activities for children and teens has been far-reaching. At a time when peer contact is incredibly important to well-being, kids have not been allowed to socialize, attend school normally, participate in sports activities or use playground equipment. The loss of this social connection beyond their immediate family has caused a significant increase in anxiety. This

may be especially challenging for children with less than ideal home lives. Additional quarantine-related problems include increased risk of depression, irritability, insomnia, anger and emotional exhaustion. A recent review shows that post-traumatic stress symptoms occur in 28 to 34%, and fear in 20%, of children in quarantine.

E-learning: The pivot to e-learning during the pandemic also causes an increase in adolescent anxiety.

Frustration with the change in format or technical difficulties seem to increase anxiety while also decreasing the amount of intrinsic motivation a child feels about schoolwork. As e-learning evolves this fall, research supports creating environments that offer a balance between challenge and motivation for students to ease anxiety.

Return to school: For children and teens with anxiety, returning to school after any holiday break can result in school refusal or increased anxiety, so a similar reaction can be expected once traditional school resumes. The most common reason for this is separation anxiety, but strong advocacy and support from parents and school representatives can be important components in the transition back.

How can parents help their child/ teen manage pandemic-related anxiety? Here are five steps to mitigate and manage its severity: 1. Be consistent. Establish routines and schedules for consistency and a sense of normalcy, such as working on schoolwork during school hours, helping kids get exercise and time out of the house, and encouraging a healthy sleep schedule. Schoolaged children need 10-11 hours each night, while adolescents require 8-10 hours.

CNN is a joke. *** In the Speak Out section of Nov. 5, someone doubted that the COVID-19 death count is inflated because deaths of various causes like drug overdoses and suicides have been included.

They most certainly have been included. Look through the Cook County Medical Examiner’s register. There are many, many deaths in which COVID-19 is listed as a secondary cause. Here are some of the primary causes of those deaths: stroke, pneumonia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, lung cancer, end-stage renal disease, dementia, fall-related injury, alcoholic cirrhosis, drug overdose and suicide. Most of these “COVID-19 deaths” are elderly victims. They didn’t die from COVID-19, but they may have been infected with COVID-19. But they are counted in the COVID-19 death total for multiple reasons, including media hysteria.

District 88 provided an update about winter sports at its two schools—Willowbrook High School and Addison Trail High School—in its newsletter of Nov. 13.

The winter seasons in multiple sports were scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 16, but the COVID-19 pandemic has put those seasons on hold.

According to District 88, Willowbrook and Addison Trail plan to run their winter seasons in five sports— boys swimming and diving, cheerleading, dance, girls bowling and girls gymnastics. The start dates for those seasons, however, are to be determined.

“Based on the county’s current

status, we are going to continue analyzing the data to determine the best time frame,” noted the update in District 88’s recent newsletter. “We understand the value and importance of athletics for students’ physical and mental well-being, and we will work with our coaches to ensure we stay connected with and support our pupils.”

Last month, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), which oversees high school sports in the state, announced that wrestling would be moved from the winter to the newly created summer season.

Regarding the traditional winter sports of boys and girls basketball, the IHSA announced in late October that it would allow for those sports

to be conducted during the winter.

Just before the IHSA issued that announcement, however, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced it had elevated basketball from a medium-risk sport to a high risk sport.

According to the IHSA, only 34 schools out of 546 respondents stated they would start their basketball seasons on Nov. 16.

Several area school districts, including Glenbard District 87 and Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205, have stated their schools will not play boys and girls basketball this winter. Those two districts have stated that their attorneys and insurance carriers have advised to adhere to the guidelines set by the IDPH.

Fire department’s new ambulance arrives Based at Station 81 on Ardmore Avenue, the emergency vehicle could be placed in service this week

The Villa Park Fire Department recently took delivery of a new 2020 Ford F-550 ambulance. The new vehicle, which will be based at Station 81 at 1440 S. Ardmore Ave., could be placed into service as soon as this week.

Earlier this year, the Villa Park Village Board approved the purchase of the ambulance and power cot at a total cost of about $314,000.

The village will pay for the vehicle with five annual payments of nearly $63,000 between 2021 and 2025.

The fire department’s fleet includes three ambulances—two front-line vehicles at one reserve vehicle. Villa Park Fire Chief Ron Rakosnik noted that the department is now operating on a cycle of buying a new ambulance every three years. According to that cycle, each ambulance is in service for nine years—six in front-line service and three years as a reserve vehicle.

The village’s current reserve ambulance—a 2009 Ford E-450, has had numerous mechanical issues and has exceeded its service life. The village will trade in that vehicle.

While the new ambulance is based at Station 81, the Villa Park Fire Department’s other front-line ambulance—a 2016 Ford E-450— is based at Station 82 at 102 W. Plymouth St. The vehicle that had been the front-line vehicle at Station 81 is a 2014 Ford F-450. That vehicle will become the department’s reserve ambulance.

Rakosnik noted that the addition of the new ambulance now gives the department a fleet of three vehicles with power-loading cot systems. The outgoing 2009 ambu-

“It’s worth a try,” Rakosnik said of the plan to re-chassis the reserve ambulance in 2023. “The [compartment] boxes are aluminum. They don’t get damaged or rusted. They don’t wear out. We’re going to try it and see if it works. If it works it could save the village a substantial amount of money.”

Rakosnik noted that while the village’s ambulances are operating on a nine-year cycle, its fleet of three fire engines is on a 21-year cycle—14 years of front-line service and seven years in reserve.

Following is a message submitted by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi: National security implications of delayed Presidential transition On Friday, Nov. 13, I sent letters to Emily Murphy, the Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA), and John Ratcliffe, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), to express my concern that the official documents to launch the presidential transition process have not yet been approved by Murphy. This presents a national security threat as the Biden administration takes over in January, and U.S. law requires a coordinated transition process so that members of the outgoing and incoming administrations can ensure a smooth and safe transfer of power.

The GSA Administrator must sign this paperwork to begin the presidential transition process, which includes the release of funding and resources to the new administration in addition to allowing the Presidentelect to receive full national security briefings. Murphy’s refusal to recognize President-elect Biden’s victory may have significant national security implications as it delays the transfer of intelligence information such as military operation summaries

and background checks for incoming Biden administration staff.

As a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, I’m concerned with this disruption in the presidential transition process and the potential safety risk it presents to the American people.

FTC cracks down on fraudulent coronavirus “cure” marketing In response to my investigation into the marketing of fraudulent coronavirus “cures,” the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced on Thursday, Nov. 12, they’ve begun to crack down on dangerous products and services, demanding that 20 companies stop falsely advertising unproven and unapproved coronavirus treatments.

I told NPR last month, we cannot allow pandemic profiteers to deceive consumers into purchasing expensive, ineffective, and potentially dangerous COVID-19 treatments.

Those who find themselves feeling a bit anxious or on edge these days are not alone.

“All of those things combined are creating a lot of heightened anxiety and exhaustion,” said Elizabeth Hill, LCPC, licensed clinical professional counselor and supervisor of rehabilitation services at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health.

Those feelings can, at times, boil over and lead to some anxious and tense moments.

A crisis prevention institute instructor, Hill helps train people to recognize those situations and teaches them the skills to keep them from escalating.

“A lot of the training evolves around de-escalating and understanding what emotions or behaviors people are exhibiting, meeting people where they are and responding appropriately,” she said.

Understanding the factors that led to a situation is key in tense moments. The person who is confronting someone about wearing a mask or cutting someone off in traffic brings their own baggage to the situation.

“Remember, everyone has got their own story,” said Hill. “That person is walking in with a whole lot of other things that we don’t know; just as we are. Providing some empathy and kindness is really important.”

If someone is in a situation where they feel safe and can listen to the other person, giving them time to vent their concerns and simply listening can go a long way.

Also, take a moment before responding.

Think, then speak and be mindful of your body language and tone, Hill said. If possible, take a brisk walk to ponder the situation before responding to a terse email or returning a phone call.

In tense situations, it also is important to be mindful of surroundings and what personal feelings. If a situation feels threatening or unsafe, Hill said listen to those feelings.

Don’t hesitate to walk away or seek help by reaching out to others nearby or calling authorities.

“If you’re able to, walk away and disengage from the situation,” said Hill. “If you’re worried about other people’s safety or your own, find support or call 911.”

Sometimes, setting boundaries in advance can help avoid tense situations. For example, if politics could become a heated debate at a family dinner, decide in advance whether that subject will come up with family members and how to handle it. Setting limits on social media and television news can also help lower stress and anxiety.

“Set some boundaries and try to surround yourself with positive things,” said Hill.

She also encourages people to look at their own lives and what they can improve.

“Educating ourselves so we can understand where people are coming from helps give us a better picture and broader view of what is going on in the world around us,” she said.

Contributions to DuPage Foundation can also be made securely online through December 31 via your bank account or credit card.

Charitable gifts of low basis stock and other appreciated assets are excellent options to consider gifting and can potentially result in considerable savings for you on income and capital gains taxes. All stock transfers to the Foundation must also be completed by Thursday, December 31, to be counted for tax purposes for 2020.

Gifts of other appreciated assets such as mutual funds, real estate, closely-held business interests, insurance, alternative investments, etc., will be evaluated by the Foundation on a case-by-case basis but cannot be guaranteed to be completed by year-end after Monday, November 30. Start initiating these gifts now to allow adequate time for their review and processing.

In summary: • By November 30, 2020 - Begin process for donating more complex gifts such as appreciated assets, business interests, insurance, etc.

Area high school basketball teams on ice Schools await outcome of IHSA board meeting to learn fate of 2020-21 seasons

After numerous weeks of circling the airport so to speak, there now is more clarity on where area high schools stand on the subject of starting not only the boys and girls basketball seasons, but winter high school sports in general.

One major caveat here is any news that comes out of today’s Illinois High School Association Board of Directors Meeting.

During a virtual update session on Nov. 11, the IHSA board announced it formally invited representatives from Governor Pritzker’s office and the Illinois Department of Public Health to attend today’s meeting. The IHSA also is seeking representation at the meeting from the Illinois Principals Association, the Illinois Association of School Administrators, the Illinois State Board of Education and a coalition of nearly 200 school superintendents who recently contacted the governor regarding sports during the 20202021 school year.

As previously reported, the IHSA and the state are at loggerheads as it pertains to basketball. The state board of health recently downgraded basketball to a high-risk sport, meaning teams can only engage in non-contact practices and training, but no games.

On the flipside, the IHSA had previously greenlighted basketball with COVID-19-related guidelines/rules put in place (including wearing masks at all times).

The boys and girls basketball season was scheduled to start this past Monday per the IHSA’s revised COVID-19-related calendar.

The IHSA announced teams that do choose to start this week must adhere to the state’s high-risk rules until at least today.

An IHSA press release last week noted the board plans to provide more direction on basketball practice and games following today’s meeting.

ketball until further guidance from the IHSA and IDPH, but said girls bowling, girls gymnastics, boys swimming and diving, competitive cheer and competitive dance, were scheduled to start practices on time this past Monday. Those teams, he added, are to play an abbreviated conference-only competition schedule.

IC Catholic Prep athletic director Michael Fahey told the Independent the Elmhurst-based school is putting basketball on hold until it hears from the IHSA after today’s board meeting. Fahey added the school has received no official word from the Diocese of Joliet yet. The Diocese of Rockford, which governs familiar ICCP foes such as Elgin St. Edward, Woodstock Marian Central and Aurora Central Catholic, previously said it is canceling the basketball season.

“Although we have no official from the Diocese of Joliet, we most likely will not be playing basketball if it goes against the state’s guidance,” Fahey added.

Fahey said boys bowling and competitive dance were slated to start practicing this past Monday. The first boys bowling match is slated for Nov. 30 at Bowlero in Glendale Heights against Hinsdale South.

Timothy Christian superintendent Matt Davidson said Timothy is positioned to play, but is entirely on hold until getting further direction from the IHSA coming out of today’s board meeting.

“The IHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee has always demonstrated utmost responsibility and care in their health protocols,” Davidson told the Independent.

“Historically, they have been the flagship on health issues for high school athletics. They have a reputation of providing research-based, thoughtful and practical health guidance for our schools with concussion protocols, heat, hydration, steroids and asthma, and the state of Illinois, until now, has always shown a great deal of deference to the IHSA on health matters. The IHSA is also concerned about the mental health of the youth in Illinois, which is another factor in their decision-making.”

Davidson noted there are other state in the country that have recently completed full fall sports seasons, including football, and have already started basketball without major interruptions.

“Timothy used all of our allowable basketball contact days this fall with the boys and girls team without a single positive case,” Davidson noted.

Timothy Christian Schools, which comprises preschool through 12th grades in three separate buildings on its Butterfield Road campus on the south side of Elmhurst, has had students learning in the building full-time since August (though students are given a remote learning option), which now encompasses a nearly 13-week stretch.

“Moreover, our school has been in-person for almost 13 weeks with a tremendous level of success,” Davidson added. “Big picture; It’s simply worth noting that there are med-

ical experts and scientists across the country with the same degrees/endorsements/ credentials, and even from the same medical schools with competing views on all this.”

Davidson would like to see a health task force in the state made up of differing opinions and “then compromise on some common ground,” he said. “There seems to be too much like-mindedness in our decision-making related to COVID, and not enough openness to differing expert opinions. Please sit down at a roundtable with a panel of expert with differing views and ask for plan before anyone can leave. We can figure this out.”

Davidson brought up the point of a potential logjam in the IHSA calendar year schedule if basketball is pushed further back into the winter or to the state’s spring and summer seasons. “As a practical side note, most of America’s high schools rely heavily on multi-sport athletes,” he said. “It would be a burden on our rosters and even our facilities to pack everything into a super-spring season. For example, I can’t imagine either of my boys having to choose between basketball and baseball when they were in high school.”

Davidson said he does not think the basketball season will start in 2020, “but I’m hoping for a winter season, perhaps starting in January,” he said.

DuPage High School District 88, which comprises Addison Trail and Willowbrook, is pausing all winter sports while it monitors the virus statistics, which once again last week showed alarming levels of deterioration in terms of numbers of infections and hospitalizations.

The district sent out a communication to families noting that while winter sports were scheduled to begin Nov. 16, the district, based on DuPage County’s current status, is going to continue analyzing data to determine the best time frame to begin.

The district added it plans to run all winter sports, but the start date for those seasons is to be determined. The district cited DuPage County being in the substantial community transmission level (minimal, moderate and substantial are the levels) for all six factors on the DuPage County COVID-19 School Metrics Guidance.

District 88 spokeswoman Dani Brink told the Independent the situation is fluid and changes can be made based on recommendations/guidance the district receives from health officials.

The district added in its communication to families that it is following the guidance and recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the governor, the Illinois and DuPage County health departments, the Illinois state Board of Education and the DuPage Regional Office of Education.

“At this time, we haven’t received approval from those organizations to allow boys and girls basketball to take place during the winter season,” the district wrote.

Fenton High School, now part of the Upstate Eight Conference with Bartlett, East Aurora, Elgin, Glenbard East, Glenbard South, Larkin, South Elgin, Streamwood and West Chicago, was part of a press release last week sent by the conference principals and athletic directors that noted member schools are required to follow the governor’s directives and wait until an agreement is reached between IHSA and IDPH. The UEC noted the IHSA has no governing authority over school districts. The release noted an agreement could mean “delaying the season, moving the season or, worst case, canceling the season.”

“While we know many families were hoping the school districts and the Upstate Eight Conference would allow for basketball to be played, our schools are required to follow the governor’s directives and wait until an agreement is reached,” the release stated.

Fenton Athletic Director Todd Becker said that while Fenton will not participate in basketball during the IHSA winter season, he did add that scenarios could occur where the IHSA moves basketball to the spring or newly created summer seasons, and that Fenton will continue to monitor COVID-19-related statistics going forward. “Hopefully they will move the season and we will see where we are at with the surge and the number of cases,” he said.

Becker added the school also will not hold bowling, gymnastics or swimming seasons.

Becker said with bowling and swimming, those sports are conducted at off-campus facilities, which presents further complications. “It’s one thing if we are holding it here at our location, but we are sending students to other venues and we don’t have control over who comes in and out of these facilities. Safety first.”

These developments also come on the heels of IDPH’s suggesting individuals, for a three-week period starting last week, stay at home as much as possible, leaving only for necessary and essential activities, such as work that must be performed outside the home, COVID-19 testing, visiting the pharmacy and buying sundries. That suggestion came on a day where 12,657 new confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases in the state were announced (with a seven-day state positivity rate of 13.6%; in late August the number had dropped to 4.3%), plus the revelation that 145 additional people had succumbed to the virus.

When asked by the Independent if the scheduled Nov. 16 practice start date (this past Monday) and the Nov. 19 board of directors meeting were impacted by this IDPH recommendation last week, an IHSA spokesman replied, “They do not impact IHSA sports.”

The IHSA board revealed that among the 546 schools who responded to a recent survey (the IHSA has 813 member schools), nearly 300 IHSA schools do not plan to start basketball on Nov. 16, and another 212 schools remain unsure of their status.

AT student-athletes show Blazer Pride during unprecedented fall sports season

The following appeared in the weekly newsletter from DuPage High School District 88 regarding Addison Trail: The Blazers continued to improve all season long this fall and demonstrated what being a student-athlete at Addison Trail is all about. They left their mark on the school and the community as they competed with pride.

I personally want to thank all of the coaches and athletes for diligently following the health and mitigation protocols set forth by the Illinois High School Association (ISHA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Blazers were able to safely, effectively and successfully complete the fall season. Thanks again to all of the programs for leaving a legacy of excellence for future seasons to follow.

Below is a recap with highlights: Boys golf The Boys Golf Team had a great bounce back from last year. With only one senior, Peter Markopoulos, the boys tied for third place in Conference. Freshman Zachary Morris, sophomore Frank Barges and sophomore Jack Bolsinger earned All-Conference honors, and Morris advanced to Sectionals. The future of AT Boys Golf looks bright.

Girls golf With only one returning varsity player from last season, the Girls Golf Team might not have won against a Conference opponent, but the girls had a lot of wins in other aspects.

The team welcomed many new players this season, and underclassmen served as veterans to help rebuild the program. The team as a whole was competitive, respectful and ultimately had fun playing this season. The girls were excited to improve their game

in each and every practice and match.

The Girls Golf Team continues to welcome new players and will practice in the off-season to stay competitive and be ready to have some wins next year.

Boys cross-country The Boys Cross-County Team finished the season with three wins and four losses. The boys placed fourth at Conference – the team’s highest finish since 1991 – and had two All-Conference and seven All-Academic athletes. The Blazers also finished in sixth place at Regionals (the team’s best finish in a long time and second-lowest point total), and senior Dylan Moran and junior Alexander Martinez qualified for Sectionals. This year was one of the largest teams, with 30 members, including a strong group of freshmen. Everyone worked really hard to adapt to the COVID-19 rules and regulations to make the meets and practices successful. The seniors will be hard to replace, with most of the

There will be something for everyone—from popular Christmas favorites such as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “A Christmas Song;” “Silent Night” performed on the guitar; a jazzy vocal rendition of “Santa Baby;” to a piano arrangement of selections from The Nut-

cracker Suite.

The concert will be live streamed to Bethel’s YouTube channel from the PianoForte Showroom in downtown Chicago.

Girls cross-country The Girls Cross-Country team had a strong – and more importantly safe – 2020 season. Practices and meets were different, but the team adapted extremely well. The team won its dual meets against Leyden and Proviso East and had a tight loss with Willowbrook this season. Senior Viviana Sanfilippo was again the team’s lead runner and won five of the six varsity dual meets. The girls placed fifth in Conference this year, with junior Madelyn Ford becoming a two-time All-Conference runner and Sanfilippo becoming the first four-time varsity All-Conference runner in Addison Trail history. The Regionals team included Sanfilippo, Ford, sophomores Ximena Juarez Martinez and Esmeralda Bucio and freshmen Natalie Lupa, Zabrina Garza and Giselle Hernandez. The final outstanding performance of the season again went to the team’s MVP, Sanfilippo, who ran a qualifying time to make her the first four-time Sectionals qualifier in school history. Although the IHSA State competition didn’t take place this year because of COVID-19, Sanfilippo’s performance would have again qualified her as an individual.

Sanfilippo, senior Mia Johnson and senior Jina Patel also earned All-Academic recognition.

Girls tennis The Girls Tennis Team finished 6-6 on the season, placing fourth in the season and end-of-the-year tournament. The highlight of the year was Conference, where three of the seven positions on the team beat a player they had lost to twice during the season. Sophomore Mia Dravilas, senior Justine Bugante, senior Emily Stevenson and junior Alicia Lloveras earned All-Conference honors. The five seniors on the varsity team also earned All-Academic recognition.

Thank you, Blazers, for a remarkable fall season. We look forward to the successes the winter, spring and summer seasons will bring.
