By State Sen. Steve Stadelman Democracy dies in darkness. Those words underscore the masthead of the Washington Post every day.

Sadly, the light journalism brings to many communities in Illinois and across the country is dimming. In the past 15 years or so, more than 2,000 newspapers around the country have closed, especially in rural areas.

That means no reporters covering local city council or school board meetings. If people don’t get the information they need to know what’s going on in their town, they can’t make educated decisions when they vote or hold their public officials accountable.

Journalists play an important watchdog role in our system. As a television news anchor and reporter in Rockford for nearly 25 years and a state senator for eight years, I’ve seen journalism from both sides. You could say a new Illinois law, which establishes the Local Journalism Task Force, is the result of my two careers intersecting.

The legislation I introduced and passed this year calls on the task force to assess the state of local journalism and issue public policy recommendations.

I think there needs to be a serious, open and frank discussion on the future of local news and how its future will affect government. As people rely less on traditional news organizations, we’ve seen a rise in media outlets that push a political

agenda.

Social media, meanwhile, is far too often the source of false and even dangerous information.

Professional news organizations are able to counteract that, helping readers and viewers know the difference.

Dwindling access to local news isn’t just a rural issue as many corporate owners of bigger-city newspapers cut staff and close bureaus to save money. While a large city still has many media outlets, we know that in our increasingly diverse society, some voices are not being heard.

There’s also an economic argument to be made. Newspapers have historically connected local businesses with readers. Without that connection, the local economy and businesses are hurt.

Members of the Local Journalism Task Force include news organizations that represent working journalists, academic institutions that teach journalism or have conducted studies and research into the issue along with state lawmakers and governor’s staff.

Potential solutions considered in other states include creating a fund to bring news and information to underserved communities, providing tax incentives to persuade media outlets to close local news gaps and more money for public broadcasting.

Or there may be no role for state government as the private sector develops new business models.

Nonprofit news websites buoyed by philanthropic foundations have sprung up around the country. So too have partnerships with nonprofit

A recent article in the Atlantic points out that equal to its watchdog role is the value of local news in establishing a community’s sense of self through stories on church picnics, restaurant openings and closings, school football games and fights to save a historic building or raise money for a cancer victim: “When that tissue disintegrates, something vital rots away. People want to know what’s going on in the towns and neighborhoods where they live, work and raise families. Their access to news and local information shouldn’t depend on their ZIP code.

County plans virtual public hearing on long-range transportation plan The DuPage County Division of Transportation will host a virtual public hearing to receive feedback on the County’s Long Range Transportation Plan.

The Long Range Transportation Plan, known as DuPage Connects, will govern transportation policies

and practices at the County for the next 20 years. The goal of the plan is to create a vision and mission for the DuPage County Division of Transportation and to help ensure a sustainable and vibrant quality of life for residents and businesses.

The plan can be found on the Di-

Plan highlights and recommendations will be presented during a virtual public hearing, which will remain online from Nov. 12 until the end of day on Nov. 19.

Mazzochi invites first generation students and parents to info session State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Westmont) is hosting an informational event about college and the application process for prospective first-generation college bound students and their parents. Here come the pumpkins

The Villa Park Environmental Concerns Commission held its annual Pumpkin Smash on Saturday near Villa Park Village Hall.

Residents stopped by to drop off hundreds of Halloween pumpkins. All of the pumpkins collected on Saturday will be composted.

The commission held its Pumpkin Smash event in coordination with SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education). According to SCARCE, Pumpkin Smash events divert pumpkins from landfills. That diversion helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, composting pumpkins produces a useful, nutrient-dense soil amendment.

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) joined his colleagues in supporting a piece of legislation to put Illinois in the forefront of green transportation during the recent fall session.

The Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act will preserve and create jobs in Illinois and incentive manufactures to move to the state.

“When the General Assembly passed the Clean and Equitable Jobs Act this past spring, we laid the groundwork for putting Illinois on the map as a hub for green innovation,” Cullerton said. “Bringing electric vehicle manufacturers here will further push our state toward prog-

ress.”

Before passing this legislation, Illinois was already home to two major electric vehicle manufacturers: Rivian, which is located in Normal and produces electric SUVs and trucks, and Lion Electric Company, a Canadian-based company that produces medium and heavy-duty urban vehicles that opened a new facility in Joliet this year.

The new measure will provide a tax credit for manufacturers of electric vehicles, parts and power supplies.

Businesses in underserved areas would be eligible for a larger benefit.

The Kiwanis Club of Villa Park will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser this Friday, Nov. 12, from 5 to 6:45 p.m. at Willowbrook High School.

The event will take place before the school’s presentation of its fall musical—“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The musical will

begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the musical are sold separately.

Tickets for the spaghetti dinner are $7 for adults, $6 for teenagers and $4 for children ages 6 to 12.

There is no charge for children 5 and under. The dinner will include a mega gift card raffle at 6 p.m.

“Already, the plant that manufactures Jeep Cherokees is looking to expand production to include electric vehicles,” Cullerton said. “These manufacturing facilities will bring steady, good-paying jobs to Illinois

as we transition into a clean energy economy.”

The state is already home to over 30,000 workers in the auto production industry and over 5,000 workers in the electric transportation industry, with these numbers expected to double in the next two years.

House Bill 1769 passed both chambers and is awaiting final approval from the governor.

VPOE’s Thanksgiving Food Drive runs through Nov. 17

Villa Park Office Equipment (VPOE) is holding its 10th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this year.

VPOE conducts the food drive in partnership with DuPagePads.

Donations for this year’s drive will be collected until Wednesday, Nov. 17. VPOE is located at 1120 N. Villa Ave. Donations can be dropped off (during regular business hours— Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) either curbside or in the VPOE showroom. Volunteers are

also available to pick up any large donations.

Last year’s drive yielded $7,050 in cash, checks and gift cards, along with over 6,600 individual items.

DuPage County Health Department to prioritize pediatric COVID-19 vaccination

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice’s (ACIP) recommendation for the use the of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children 5 through 11 years of age.

This follows the FDA’s authorization Oct. 29 of the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 in children 5 through 11 years of age.

The authorization was based on the FDA’s thorough and transparent evaluation of the data that included input from independent advisory committee experts who overwhelmingly voted in favor of making the vaccine available to children in this age group.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) expects the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine to be available through a robust provider network in many locations throughout DuPage County. DCHD has been working with healthcare providers, schools, and other organizations to ensure a broad network of access for children to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The DCHD also partnered with the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians to encourage all pediatricians and family medicine providers in DuPage to become COVID-19 vaccine providers and to ensure the availability of COVID-19 vaccine for their patients.

“We have been planning for the availability of the vaccine for younger children for months,” said DCHD Executive Director Karen Ayala.

“Protecting our children from severe outcomes associated with COVID-19 infection and reducing community transmission of COVID-19 are important steps in addressing the serious impacts this pandemic has had on our community.”

Warriors rally to beat Moline and move on to quarterfinals Willowbrook’s defense shuts out Maroons in the second half

The Willowbrook football team advanced to the IHSA Class 7A quarterfinals after rallying to beat Moline 30-26 in Friday’s second-round playoff game in Villa Park.

The Warriors, who moved their overall season record to 8-3 with their win over Moline (9-2), will play another home playoff game this week. They will host Wheaton North (10-1) this Friday. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.

Willowbrook’s football program has now made it to at least the quarterfinal round in each of the last five IHSA post-seasons. The Warriors advanced to the quarterfinals in 2016 (in the 7A level), 2017 (6A) and 2018 (7A). Willowbrook won three playoff games in 2019 to earn a berth in the semifinal round of the Class 7A playoffs. The 2020 season was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state’s IHSA football teams played a shortened six-game season, with no playoffs, in the spring of 2021.

Moline led the Warriors 26-17 at halftime. The Maroons scored on the final play of the first half, when they completed a 30-yard pass into the end zone. Moline missed the extra-point kick.

After a scoreless third quarter, Willowbrook cut into Moline’s lead early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore quarterback A.J. Palicki completed a 14yard touchdown pass to senior Nick Mabutas with 9:37 remaining in the final quarter. Junior Adrian Guerrero added the extra-point kick to reduce the Maroons’ lead to 26-24.

The Warriors scored what proved to be the winning touchdown with 6:14 to play, when junior Joey Tumilty took a handoff from Palicki, ran to his right and threw a pass to Mabutas near the right sideline. Mabutas caught the pass near the Maroons’ 40-yard line and sprinted into the end zone for a 56yard touchdown reception that gave his team a 30-26 lead. Willowbrook missed the extra-point kick.

The Warriors sealed their victory with a couple of late defensive stops, the first of which came on a fourthdown running play. Moments later, after Willowbrook punted the ball away, senior Vince Vassolo intercepted a Moline pass. The Warriors then ran out the clock to wrap up their win and trigger a celebration among the team’s players and fans.

“They [the Maroons] have a bunch of weapons all over the place,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth in describing how the Warriors shut Moline out in the second half after allowing 26 points in the first half. “We talked about some adjustments. Our defense did a really good job of getting stop after stop.”

Hildreth noted during his post-game comments the Warriors’ joy in extending their season for at least one more week.

“A loss in the playoffs is so abrupt,” he said. “All we ever want is to get another week as a group. Every team is like a heartbeat, and then it abruptly ends. That’s it. That same group is never together again. We’ve got another week with this group of kids and this coaching staff.”

Moline scored a touchdown with less than two minutes left in the first quarter. The extra-point kick trimmed the Warriors’ lead to 10-7. Moline took a 13-10 lead following a short touchdown run in the middle of the second quarter. The Maroons missed the extra-point kick.

Senior Jaylon White helped the Warriors regain the lead when he delivered a 4-yard touchdown run with 3:41 left in the second quarter. Guererro made the extra-point kick to push the Warriors’ lead to 17-13.

Moline moved back into the lead on a touchdown pass with about two min-

utes left in the first half.

The Maroons added their fourth touchdown of the night when they completed the 30-yard touchdown pass on the first half’s final play from scrimmage.

“We just knew we could come out and stop them in the second half,” said Tumilty after the victory. “I just try to play for my teammates. They’re my brothers on the field. They play as hard as hard as I play for them. It’s just fun together as a team. It was a fun game.”

In addition to scoring one touchdown, Tumilty turned in a huge play on defense when he intercepted a long Moline pass with about seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

Tumilty made the interception near the Warriors’ 5-yard line and delivered a lengthy return of about 40 yards.

Moments later, the Willowbrook offense produced the go-ahead score— Tumilty’s 56-yard pass to Mabutas.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team completed a historic season with Friday’s 25-18, 25-21 loss to Mother McAuley in an IHSA Class 4A super-sectional match in Chicago.

Mother McAuley, which played the super-sectional on its home court, advanced to this week’s Class 4A state semifinals in Normal. The Mighty Macs will meet Edwardsville in one of this Friday’s semifinals.

The winner will meet either Metea Valley or Barrington in Saturday’s state-championship contest.

Willowbrook completed its season with an overall record of 37-2. The Warriors, who won the program’s first regional title on Oct. 28, reached another new height by adding a sectional championship on Nov. 3.

Two days after beating Downers Grove North 25-18, 22-25, 25-22 in a sectional semifinal match, the Warriors squared off with Wheaton Warrenville South in the final of the Class 4A Bartlett Sectional on Nov. 3. Willowbrook and the Tigers waged a thrilling three-game battle in front of a boisterous audience. Both teams had match points at the end of

the third game. The Warriors closed out the see-saw match by winning three straight points to earn a 19-25, 25-21, 27-25 victory.

“It was a roller coaster all over the place, but we knew it was going to be like that,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason moments after the emotional win over Wheaton Warrenville South in the sectional final. “At this point, I feel like all the preparation is already done, so what’s going to happen is going to happen.”

Mason guided the Warriors to their playoff success days before having a baby.

“I am nine months pregnant,” she noted after the Warriors hoisted their sectional plaque in Bartlett. “This baby is most likely coming next week.”

The Warriors did not panic after losing the first game to Wheaton Warrenville South. Willowbrook grabbed a 10-1 lead in the second game. The Warriors went on to win that game to even the match. Sophomore Elle Bruschuk swatted the ball into an open corner to provide the point that ended the second game.

Oversight Committee hearing with oil executives on climate change

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Recently, I participated in an Oversight Committee hearing with Michael Wirth, CEO of Chevron, on the issue of carbon emissions and climate change.

Since 1880, average global temperatures have increased by 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.2 degrees Celsius. This is a real climate crisis because at a 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit change, or 15.8 degrees Celsius, we could possibly see summer sea ice disappearing in the Arctic.

During this hearing, Mr. Wirth falsely told me that his compensation as CEO was linked to reducing total carbon emissions. However, documents filed by Chevron with the Securities and Exchange Commission show that Mr. Wirth’s compensation—which totaled $29 million in 2020—has a component of reducing “carbon intensity,” the amount of carbon generated per unit of energy used, rather than total emissions. That means that Mr. Wirth could receive more compensation in any given year even if the company emitted dramatically more carbon pollution into the atmosphere.

To make genuine progress, we need transparency into the incentives that oil companies provide their executives to reduce pollution by their company. This is crucial for tackling the climate crisis.

My letter to President Biden on removing USPS leadership Last week, I sent a letter to President Biden requesting that he not reappoint the USPS Board of Governors Chairman, Ron Bloom, to ensure that the Board of Governors is able to appropriately review the job performance of Postmaster General DeJoy. Mr. Bloom’s term with the USPS Board of Governors expires in December, and President Biden has the power to appoint a new board member.

This is important because Mr. Bloom has unconditionally supported Postmaster General DeJoy, whose tenure has been riddled with financial conflicts of interest while his “Delivering for America” plan has significantly cut USPS service standards and increased prices.

My constituents have expressed serious concerns about their delayed mail and packages. Given Mr. Bloom’s commitment to

this unacceptable status quo and to Postmaster General DeJoy, I informed President Biden that a change of leadership in the USPS Board of Governors is necessary to ensure the longevity and success of the USPS. The Build Back Better Act Congress is still negotiating the final text for the Build Back Better Act (H.R. 5376). I am proud that the current draft contains provisions that I fought to be included to strengthen our workforce, our economy, and end the pandemic.

The current draft includes nearly $35 billion over the next 10 years for workforce development programs, which includes funding for existing workforce development programs, for industry and sector partnership grants, and for addressing climate change. The package also includes comprehensive high-skilled immigration reform, which I fought for to simplify the system, make it fairer, and reduce the green card backlog.

Lastly, the package includes $1.3 billion to support global and domestic vaccine production, including through the construction of new manufacturing facilities or the expansion of existing facilities. While the scale of the pandemic will demand even more action, this additional vaccine funding will be a step forward in preventing the emergence of new variants that could sabotage our progress.

First-year students applying to any of Illinois’ public universities will now only need to submit one form on Common App, and State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) applauded the step to increase accessibility to higher education opportunities.

“Applying to college can be tedious and expensive,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By using Common App, Illinois is simplifying the process and working to ensure individuals have access to higher education opportunities.”

This fall, all 12 public universities in Illinois will be available on the Common App platform, thanks to a $1 million state investment.

For families concerned about the cost of submitting college applications, waivers are

available for low-income students. In addition, some colleges and universities either have no application fees or will waive fees if needed.

“Many applicants and their families are hesitant to start the college journey because of the associated costs,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Luckily, there are several aid options available to help reduce the financial burdens associated with applying for college.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Common App web site for informational resources, including a first-year application guide, videos and a complete list of institutions that use the application.

When a community member adopts a resident, he or she will receive information about the resident, including gender, age, and up to five items they would like. Gift requests average about $50 in value, and include items such as personal care products, gifts cards, and clothes.

Items can be brought – unwrapped – to the DuPage Care Center by Dec. 6. Gifts will be

wrapped and distributed to the residents during holiday parties throughout the month of December.

Willowbrook’s volleyball team ends season

Willowbrook’s girls volleyball team finished a memorable season with a loss to Mother McAuley in Friday’s IHSA Class 4A super-sectional match in Chicago. Mother McAuley, which won the contest on its home court, advanced to this week’s state semifinals in Normal.

The Warriors completed their season with a record of 37-2. Prior to this season, the Willowbrook program had never won a regional championship. This season’s team won a regional title, as well as a sectional title. After posting two post-season wins on its own court to win a regional plaque, Willowbrook advanced to the Bartlett Sectional. The Warriors beat Downers Grove North in three games in a Nov. 1 sectional semifinal. Two days later, Willowbrook defeated Wheaton Warrenville South in the sectional final. Hassler will swim at IHSA state meet

Willowbrook senior Ellie Hassler of Villa Park will compete in the upcoming IHSA girls state swimming and diving meet at FMC Natatorium in Westmont. Hassler qualified for the state meet with her performances at Saturday’s Downers Grove South Sectional.

Hassler, who is a member of the Willowbrook/Addison Trail co-op team, competed in the AWD (athletes with disabilities) division at the sectional. She earned state-meet berths in three individual events—the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Hassler finished the sectional’s 50-yard freestyle in 40.19 seconds. She posted a finishing time of 1 minute, 33.06 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle at the sectional. She completed Saturday’s 100-yard breaststroke race in 2 minutes, 17.66 seconds.

Pritzker gets COVID-19 vaccine booster ahead of international trip Governor: Child vaccine requirement would have to come from lawmakers

Gov. JB Pritzker became one of the 800,000-plus Illinoisans who have received a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot Nov. 2, ahead of his first overseas trip as governor.

Pritzker and his top staff planned to depart to London Nov. 2 to meet with business leaders on economic development opportunities in Illinois before heading to Glasgow, Scotland, on Nov. 5 for the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties. House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, and Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, planned to join the Illinois group for the London leg of the trip.

Pritzker received a booster dose of the vaccine manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech after receiving the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine in March. He noted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently authorized “mixing and matching” vaccines.

He also said he was not worried about potential side effects, which usually last about a day and include fatigue or pain at the injection site, as he prepared to depart to London.

Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike also took questions about whether the state would require

vaccination for children to attend school.

Federal health officials gave final approval to using the the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children ages 5-11. That approval took place last week.

Ezike said any decision on mandates wouldn’t be considered until full approval is granted.

“So, I think it’s premature to think about requiring those for school,” she said. “We probably would want it to have the standard authorization, …such as what we have for Pfizer for individuals who are 18 and over.”

Ezike said while no vaccine requirement is currently being considered, “that probably could change much further down the line.”

Pritzker said any mandate would have to go through the state’s General Assembly.

“Here in Illinois, that requirement is something that would go through the legislature as others have,” he said. “We require lots of vaccinations, as you know, when kids go to school already, to make sure that kids don’t get polio, to make sure they don’t get measles and mumps and rubella and so on.

“And so this, if there was an approval of that—and I haven’t seen that on the horizon yet – but if there were an approval of that, then that

would just be another one of those vaccinations that kids get.”

Pritzker and Ezike urged all eligible Illinoisans to receive the booster shot.

Eligible populations for the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are those 65 years of age and older, and those 18 and older who live in long-term care settings or work or live in high-risk settings and had their last dose at least six months ago.

Those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are eligible if they are 18 years of age or older and have received the first dose at least two months ago.

Pritzker said with approval imminent, parents of children ages 5 to 11 who wish their children to be vaccinated should call their pediatricians to schedule a shot or reach out to schools to request a vaccine clinic be hosted there. Vaccines remain free, he said.

The COVID-19 test positivity rate sat at 2 percent as of Nov. 2, and hospitalizations were flattening, putting Illinois well ahead of where it was in the pandemic one year ago.

But greater vaccination will help halt a greater winter spread, the governor said.
