Elmhurst police bust illegal cannabis dispensary Find 34,000+ grams of product, a handgun; three arrested

According to the Elmhurst Police reports, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, officers served a search warrant at a business whose sign currently says its name is “BDI Brands, LLC,” located at 231 West Wrightwood, regarding its alleged operation as an unlicensed recreational cannabis dispensary.

During the course of the investigation, police reported that the business allegedly sold cannabis to walk-in customers as well as a minor.

Approximately 31,000 grams of edible cannabis, 3,000 grams of cannabis flower, 460 grams of cannabis

concentrate and a loaded handgun were recovered in the drug investigation, police said. Two business operators and one employee were taken into custody.

Arrested was Shiquita Lacy, 24, of Lisle, who was found to be in possession of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as ecstasy (E) or molly.

Lacy was charged with delivery of cannabis and possession of controlled substance. Also arrested were Melichsia Boss-Woodard, 48, and Melvin Woodard, 37, both of Roselle, who were charged with felony possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and armed violence.

The Village of Villa Park recently released information about trick-ortreating in the village this Halloween.

Noting that some residents might not feel comfortable handing out treats this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the village provided some details and tips regarding this year’s holiday.

The recommended hours for trickor-treating in Villa Park are from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The village’s trick-or-treating tips to residents this year include: • Do not participate in trick-ortreating if you are feeling unwell.

• All participants over the age of 2, including those passing out treats, should wear face coverings.

• Avoid close contact with others by leaving candy on your porch, or even on your lawn, driveway or walkway.

• Offer candy on a disinfected table, or use some other method to eliminate direct contact with trickor-treaters.

• If you would prefer to answer the door to greet children individually, pass out candy instead of inviting children to take a treat from a communal bowl.

• Do not trick-or-treat in groups with others; trick-or-treat as a house-

• Do not distribute homemade treats or fresh fruit.

• Keep hand sanitizer near your door for yourself and for trick-ortreaters. Take sanitizer with you when taking your children out to trick-or-treat.

• Make sure your children wash their hands after trick-or-treating, especially before eating their candy.

Turn ON your porch lamp or outdoor lights to show that your home is welcoming trick-or-treaters. Not all families may feel comfortable participating in trick-or-treating this year.

Teach your children not to ring the doorbell of a home if a light isn’t on.

For residents who do not want to participate in handing out treats this year, the village has designed a “No Trick-or-Treat” sign. The sign can be printed out and placed on the front door to alert trick-or-treaters.

Dog obedience classes

The Villa Park Parks and Recreation Department welcomes a new instructor—Rudy O’Donnell—who is partnering with the department to teach dog obedience classes this fall. O’Donnell is pictured during a recent class at the Community Recreation Building, located at 320 E. Wildwood Ave. O’Donnell, a certified dog trainer who believes in science-based, force-free training, owns and operates the Endless Pawssibilities training business. The next session of classes starts on Oct. 28, and runs through Dec. 9. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings. The puppy/beginner class is for puppies and dogs 5 months and older who haven’t received training. The intermediate class is for puppies or dogs who have gone through a basic training program. The Villa Park Police Department invites residents to its quarterly Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) community meeting, which will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The meeting will take place at the Community Recreation Building, located at 320 E. Wildwood Ave. Luke, a German shepherd who joined the police department earlier this year, will attend the meeting with his handler, Villa Park Police Officer Mat Rol vel Rul. Officer Rol vel Rul and Luke will give a presentation during the meeting.

The Villa Park Senior Concerns Commission will sponsor a luncheon for all SALT members and guests.

This year, it is more important than ever for residents to get their influenza (flu) shot as we battle COVID-19, a different viral respiratory illness that can result in severe outcomes including hospitalization and death. While a vaccine for COVID-19 is still under development, there is a vaccine for flu that has been proven to be safe and effective over the past 50 years. Each season, millions of Americans are sickened with flu, hundreds of thousands are hospitalized, and tens of thousands die.

Getting a flu vaccine can help you avoid co-infection with COVID-19 and flu, which may prevent even more severe illness.

In Illinois, influenza season typically starts in the fall and the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) recommends everyone six months of age and older get vaccinated against flu. I am happy to see our villages are offering signs we can display for Halloween, whether trick or tricking is either welcome or not. And I am also happy they are leaving it up to sensible adults to make the best decision for their own circumstances. I am undecided about handing out candy, but if I do, it will not be with kids ringing the doorbell. And please, people, no shaming on either side of the issue. It is not helpful. *** Ever notice that anytime something doesn’t go the left’s way, they want to change things? When Trump won the Electoral College but not the popular vote, they wanted to get rid of the Electoral College. After Ruth Bader Ginsberg died, and Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to take her place, they want to increase the number of justices from nine to 11. They’ve also proposed term limits of 18 years for Supreme Court Justices while always refusing term limits for themselves. I also read that they would like to admit two more states into the union in order to ensure a Senate majority. District 88 offers free food service each Wednesday Seven breakfasts and seven lunches will be available each Wednesday to all residents 18 and under

District 88 is committed to making sure students continue to receive food service while they are not in school buildings because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The district recently announced it is extending the hours of service and the number of meals provided through its community food-service program. The district is partnering with Chartwells and Cottage Hill Operating Company to offer free meals.

The service is free of charge to all residents up to the age of 18. Beginning this Wednesday, Oct. 7, seven days worth of meals (seven break-

fasts and seven lunches) were distributed outside of the district’s two schools—Willowbrook High School and Addison Trail High School.

Food will be provided each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I think they have more pull than you think. Look at the recent events with the Chicago Teachers Union saying they won’t go back to the classrooms. That being said, what are the official stances of the teacher unions for local districts 44, 45, 87 and 88? Do they want to be back in the classrooms? The teacher unions have more power than you think. *** Am I the only person who has Googled “Deaths per year in the United States” to learn how many people die in one year? According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were more than 2.8 million deaths in the United States in 2018.

That’s over 235,000 deaths per month. The number of annual deaths in the country never made news until this year. There’s a big difference between dying of COVID-19 and dying with it. But there seems to be enthusiasm for running up the COVID-19 death total. Did you see that in Wisconsin, there’s a major disparity in the number of COVID-19 deaths between the state and Milwaukee County? There’s a disparity between the way the state and the county record deaths.

There’s reason to be skeptical of the “official” COVID-19 death count. *** I am an election judge in DuPage County. FYI: No one is allowed to stay in the voting room after they vote unless they are authorized in advance. No exceptions. *** What is the point of wearing masks in public when you’re wearing one around your chin or neck? I don’t know if masks do any good, but they are definitely useless when they don’t cover your nose or mouth.

Yet it seems like that’s how a lot of people wear them. *** It is so encouraging to see those who do not want to be ridiculed for supporting Trump fly American flags instead. The silent majority is in full force. *** I saw a commercial promoting the fair tax on TV. The commercial asked, “Who’s going to pay? Billionaires or you?” There’s a grand total of 17 billionaires in Illinois, including six with the last name Pritzker. The population of Illinois is over 12 million people. If this passes, keep dreaming if you think you’re not going to pay more taxes in the future, and keep dreaming if you think the Pritzkers and the rest of these billionaires won’t find tax shelters and loopholes like Donald Trump does. The same commercial also claims the fair tax will lower property taxes. What a crock!

Raja issues update on COVID-19 stimulus package I know many of you are eager to learn more about the status of the next COVID-19 stimulus package.

While negotiations are continuing, this week I voted for the revised version of the bipartisan HEROES Act, which would provide muchneeded aid to American families, businesses, workers, and schools.

For example, the bill will provide: • Support for small businesses, through improving the Paycheck Protection Program for the smallest businesses and struggling non-profits while providing hardhit businesses with second loans as well as targeted assistance for the struggling restaurant industry and independent live venue operators.

• Aid for airline industry workers, through extending the Payroll Support Program to keep airline industry workers paid.

• $225 billion in additional funds to bolster education and childcare, including $182 billion for K-12 schools, nearly $39 billion for postsecondary education, and $57 billion to support childcare for families.

Additionally, this new legislation will: • Provide $436 billion for one year’s worth of assistance to state and local governments, which need this funding to pay essential workers like first responders and health workers who keep us safe and are in danger of losing their jobs.

• Commit $75 billion to support testing, tracing, and treatment of COVID with special attention to the disparities facing communities of color to ensure that every American can access free coronavirus treatment and supporting hospitals and providers.

Our bill would also commit $28 billion to the procurement, distribution, and education campaigns for a safe and effective vaccine.

• Provide additional direct payments of $1,200 per taxpayer and $500 per dependent, cushioning the economic blow of the coronavirus crisis.

• Protect payrolls, through enhancing the new employee retention tax credit that encourages employers to keep workers on their payrolls.

• Preserve health coverage,

protecting Americans losing their employer-provided health insurance by making unemployed Americans automatically receive the maximum ACA subsidy on the exchanges, as well as a special enrollment period in the ACA exchanges for uninsured Americans.

• Restore unemployment benefits, ensuring weekly supplemental $600 federal unemployment payments through next January and preventing unemployed workers from exhausting their eligibility, providing a vital safety net for the record number of Americans who are unemployed, including those connected to the gig-economy.

• Safeguard our democracy, with new resources to ensure safe elections, an accurate Census, and preserve the Postal Service.

It is long past time for another stimulus bill that will protect those fighting on the front lines, as well as help put an end to this pandemic and stimulate the economy by putting money in the pockets of the American people. Now, I hope the Senate will take up this legislation quickly.

Three juveniles, one adult charged with aggravated robbery in Wheaton On Tuesday, Sept. 29, officers with the Wheaton Police Department responded to a call of a robbery with a gun near the Wheaton College campus. It is alleged that at approximately 6:23 p.m., the three male juveniles approached the victims and took cannabis wax from them. It is further alleged that one of the male juveniles was armed with a gun, later determined to be an airsoft pistol. It is alleged that after the robbery, the three juveniles fled in a car driven

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police Bill Murphy announced that Judge Anthony Coco had ordered three male juveniles accused of robbing two individuals at gunpoint to be released to the custody of their parents.

A fourth individual also charged, Mikayla Jawor, 22, of Westmont, appeared in Bond Court Wednesday morning where Judge Jeffrey MacKay set a $50,000 recognizance bond. All four defendants have been charged with one count of Aggravated Robbery – Dangerous Weapon or Firearm, a Class 1 Felony. Each of the three juveniles is also facing an additional count of Robbery, a Class 2 Felony.

Company alters course, repurposes machinery SourceOne Events began in owner’s Elmhurst garage

As the saying goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” and one Lombard company has taken that concept to heart.

“We’re in the meetings, trade shows and events business,” explained Mike Foster, director of Sales and Service for SourceOne Events, which has repurposed its machinery—used preCOVID-19 to create materials and signage for the trade show industry— to make desks for young children.

Foster told how the company provides materials and signage and sets up booths for expositions.

“

We were all set to go to Dallas (for) Macy’s, our truck was halfway to Dallas. We (had) put the entire trade show in a truck. In our industry, the world just stopped.”

and by the first week of June, they realized this was going to be the norm for a long time.

Owner Mike Bojesen, who started SourceOne Events out of his garage in Elmhurst, told employees, “We have to come up with other products” to keep afloat.

“Everyone realized this is not going to be over by this summer,” said Foster.

Many businesses began to repurpose existing equipment, and in the case of SourceOne Events, it was the use of a CNC machine that brought them a way to repurpose.

The CNC machine cuts out materials into the various shapes as desired. Foster said the machine was purchased in January because it was going to provide new products for trade shows.

Instead, the computer–assisted machine offered the ability to cut dimensions.”

Creating desks for at-home learning Even back then, it was thought that desks for at-home learning would be needed, and after trying out a handful of prototypes, the company came

up with a design using sturdy 4-foot by 8-foot sheets of foam board, according to Foster, who said the CNC machine “cuts all the parts out of the desk.”

The desks, which cost $89, are sized for grade-school-age children and do not require tools to assemble because the pieces interlock.

“It all folds into place,” he explained.

The desk comes in a box that fits in a medium-size or larger vehicle, and can be picked up at the Lombard warehouse, located at 160 Eisenhower Lane North, Lombard.

Foster said the company is currently working to create a wooden version of the desk for youth in middle school and older.

After SourceOne Events started in owner Mike Bojesen’s garage in Elmhurst some 15 years ago, it grew large enough to require relocation, also in Elmhurst. When the company expanded even more, Bojesen moved to its current 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Lombard five years ago.

“We help businesses and associations to set up their annual trade shows and expos, reservation counters, etc.,” he said. “A lot of these events take place in hotel ballrooms,” noting that SourceOne Events is the in-house supplier for the Schaumburg Convention Center, as well as three hotels in Orlando, where SourceOne Events opened an office four years ago.

Foster said the company also travels elsewhere across the country setting up conventions and trade expos.

Chicago’s McCormick Place alone hosts as many as 150 expo-type events a year.

Like many other businesses, SourceOne Events furloughed employees when trade shows and conventions were abruptly cancelled.

The director said at that point, some of the employees worked from home.

“We could only talk to our customers about next year,” he said.

Cullerton reminds residents of license, ID extension State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) wants to make sure DuPage County are aware that expiration dates for Illinois driver’s licenses and IDs have been extended until Feb. 1, 2021. All expired driver’s licenses and IDs will remain valid until then.

“Extending these important deadlines will provide relief to many and help reduce the spread of COVID-19,” Cullerton said. “We all must work

together to keep our communities healthy. This smart step will help prevent long lines and overcrowding at our local driver services offices.”

The secretary of state’s office has repeatedly pushed back the deadline to renew expiring licenses since the pandemic began. The newly extended deadline will also cover driver’s licenses and ID cards set to expire in October, November, December and

January.

Older adults age 75 and over have also had their driver’s license expiration dates extended by one year. The new expiration date is the motorist’s birthday in 2021.

However, expiring license plate stickers will not be valid past the current Nov. 1 deadline, as they can easily be renewed online at www.cyberdriveillinois.com. Other common

services, such as requesting a replacement or duplicate driver’s license or ID, are also available on the website.

“The secretary of state’s office as worked diligently to allow residents to renew and request services online,” Cullerton said. “This is a smart move to help reduce long lines and cut down on overcrowding at our local offices for residents who have no choice but to go in.”

Illinois residents who must visit a driver services facility should be aware that they will be required to wear masks.

They may also have to wait outside for an extended period of time to maintain social distancing and should take the weather into account when planning a visit.

Columbia Care, Inc., held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week to celebrate the opening of its adult-use cannabis dispensary in Villa Park. The new dispensary, which is located at 133 Roosevelt Road, is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Villa Park dispensary offers flower and edible cannabis, vaporization cartridges and several other products, with the option for express pickup. The business is open to consumers 21 and older. Customers need to present identification to be allowed into the dispensary. More than 2 million Illinois voters have requested vote-by-mail ballots and more than 26,000 such ballots have already been returned, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

That means about a quarter of the state’s registered voters had requested vote-by-mail ballots as of Sept.

30.

ISBE reported that 2,077,594 ballots were requested, with 26,872 returned and 55,751 persons having voted early.

The number continues to grow as public health guidance advises against congregating in indoor places due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19. Earlier this year, state lawmakers passed a law requiring election authorities to send applications for vote-by-mail ballots to registered voters who voted in recent elections.

Applications must be sent back to the election authority to receive a mail-in ballot. Many of the applications have already been distributed to voters, and vote-by-mail and early voting periods began last week.

Once the ballot is received, it must be sent back to the election authority to be counted. While the new law for the 2020 election allows an election authority to install drop boxes for the return of ballots, a spokesperson said only 54 of the state’s 108 election jurisdictions have such a drop box.

Those who have requested mail ballots but change their minds and would like to vote in person instead have avenues to do so, according to ISBE spokesperson Matt Dietrich, who said there are safeguards in place to ensure no double voting occurs.

A voter who received a mail ballot but wishes to cast a ballot in person must surrender the ballot at an early voting location or polling place on Election Day and will be given a regular ballot.

A voter who does not surrender the ballot must cast a provisional ballot.

Provisional ballots are not counted until all the mail ballots have been processed and it is assured that the voter’s ballot is not among them.

Returned ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by the local election office by Nov. 17 in order to be counted.

In May, recognizing that manufacturing essential supplies in country as opposed to internationally is vital, especially in the midst of a pandemic, Rep. Mazzochi filed House Bill 5788 to entice critical manufacturing back from overseas and to Illinois.

“With Illinois facing over 11% unemployment, and businesses and residents fleeing to other states, we absolutely must pay attention to our manufacturing sector, and ways to keep it here,” Rep. Mazzochi explained. “Every nation with a healthy middle class has a strong manufacturing sector. In Illinois, advanced manufacturing translates into good jobs, union jobs, as well as all of the support teams surrounding them.”

Mazzochi also noted that one of Illinois’ natural advantages it had over the years—a skilled workforce—has not translated into applicants for manufacturing positions.

“The raw, single-minded focus on a 4-year degree over the past few decades has resulted in a serious skills gap and left quality, good paying jobs unfilled,” she said. “We need to change the conversation and that begins with open roundtables like this.”

Roundtable contributor Ray Doogan, local plant manager for global manufacturing company Ingredion, echoed these same concerns.

“People have an outdated image of manufacturing and today’s manufacturers are facing challenges in the acquisition of talent,” Rep. Mazzochi continued. “While I was on the board at the College of DuPage, we started Project Hire-Ed to ensure our community colleges were helping to address the skills gap and connect students with businesses to help them learn practical, applicable knowledge without massive debt.”

Rounding out the discussion, Danielle Kuglin Seago, the current Project Hire-Ed manager, discussed the opportunities available to those who are interested in a career in manufacturing and how to make it happen, and emphasized the successes both students and employers have found through the program. She and Ray Doogan discussed what employers are looking for and what an investment apprenticeship programs can be.

Warriors take third in conference meet

Willowbrook’s boys golf team battled in Saturday’s West Suburban Conference Championships at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club’s Course No. 2 in Palos Park. The Warriors placed third among the conference’s Gold Division teams in Saturday’s meet with their score of 339. Downers Grove South won the Gold Division’s meet title with its score of 319. Hinsdale South placed one stroke ahead of Willowbrook with its score of 338. Addison Trail (341) finished fourth, while Morton (410) and Leyden (417) placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Sophomore Brett Vandergrift (top left) delivered Willowbrook’s best round on Saturday by shooting an 18-hole round of 81 on the par-72 course. He finished sixth among all individuals in the Gold Division. Senior Andrew Rugg (left) contributed an 83 for the Warriors, while junior Dominic Faillo (above) fired an 87. Senior Nick Cipriano rounded out Willowbrook’s scoring lineup with an 88. Vandergrift, Rugg and Faillo earned all-conference honors with their performances at Saturday’s meet. In addition to placing third in the meet, the Warriors tied for third in the overall season standings, which included Saturday’s scores and the results from conference dual meets during the regular season. The Warriors are competing in this week’s nine-team IHSA Class 3A Regional at Glendale Lakes Golf Club in Glendale Heights.

The Willowbrook girls golf team competed in Saturday’s West Suburban Conference Meet at Bloomingdale Golf Club. The Warriors finished seventh in the team standings of the 10team event with their score of 380. Hinsdale Central won the team title with its score of 305. The West Suburban Conference is not divided into Silver and Gold divisions in girls golf. Junior Emma Rattana (above left) posted Willowbrook’s best score of the conference meet by firing an 18-hole round of 87 on the par-71 course.

Rattana finished in a tie for 14th place in the event’s individual standings. She earned all-conference honors by placing among the top 20 individuals in the meet.

Sophomores Mickey Martens (above right) and Maddie Aderholt (left) both shot rounds of 96 for the Warriors.

Senior Peyton MItrick carded a 101 to round out Willowbrook’s scoring lineup (87+96+96+101). Seniors Maddie Hayes and Kayla Raue-Lease shot scores of 106 and 111, respectively.

The Warriors are playing in this week’s 10-team IHSA Class 2A regional at Glendale Lakes Golf Club in Glendale Heights.

Willowbrook earned its only win of the meet in the No. 3 doubles match. Senior Grace Tumilty (above) and junior Mackenzie Parente (below) teamed up to provide the Warriors with the victory. Earlier last week, the Warriors claimed wins in conference dual meets against Addison Trail and Proviso East. Willowbrook will play in the West Suburban Gold Conference Meet this Friday and Saturday. The meet’s matches will take place at Hinsdale South and Hinsdale Central.
