October is Manufacturing Month in Illinois, according to Choose DuPage, which submitted this report about the manufacturing companies that are driving economic growth in the County.

Choose DuPage reports that manufacturing employs more than 56,000 people in DuPage County.

The 5th largest industry in the County, manufacturing is helping build the future of DuPage.

Manufacturing is driving economic growth in the following ways: • For every $1 of goods produced, manufacturing generates an additional $1.89 for the economy.

• Each manufacturing job creates 3.4 additional jobs.

• Taken alone, manufacturing in the U.S. would be the 9th largest economy in the world.

Top manufacturing deals of last year Last year, according to Choose DuPage, a number of manufacturing companies moved or expanded in DuPage County—representing more than 2.2 million square-feet of new or improved space. Some of the top deals included: • Norix is building a 200,000 square-foot global headquarters on 22 acres of the DuPage Business Center. The company manufactures high quality, durable furniture specially designed for uniquely challenging environments like prisons and other institutions.

Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 a.m.

Volunteers sought for Meals on Wheels The DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) needs volunteers to deliver meals to frail and homebound seniors in DuPage County.

Meals on Wheels are delivered five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Deliveries typically take about an hour.

Requirements to volunteer are a valid driver’s license, current car insurance, a background check and to attend a volunteer training that is

provided at the DSCC central office located at 1990 Springer Drive in Lombard.

In addition to Meals on Wheels drivers, DSCC is always in need of volunteers for other services such as seeing a senior through its Friendly Visit program, creating crafts and taking part in intergenerational activities.

Vaping industry opposes flavored product ban

Vaping and other industry stakeholders opposing legislation banning flavored products said Oct. 24 the bill would have negative health and economic impacts.

Democratic Villa Park State Rep. Deb Conroy’s Flavored Tobacco Ban Act would outlaw the sale or distribution of nicotine products with a “distinguishable taste or aroma.”

It applies to cigarettes, cigars, hookahs, chewing tobacco, vape pods and other products. The bill was set for consideration when lawmakers returned to the statehouse Monday for the fall veto session.

Members of the Smoke Free Alternatives Coalition and vape business owners said during a news event at the Capitol that prohibition would “drive well over 100,000 Illinois adults back to smoking traditional cigarettes” and devastate their businesses.

“We are not big tobacco. We started this business to keep adult smokers off combustible cigarettes, and flavored e-liquid makes up 98 percent of our business because adult smokers prefer flavors,” said Tim Teml, co-owner of That 1 Vape in Joliet.

“Our biggest fear is that the temptation of easily-available cigarettes will drive them back to smoking without

When Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a gambling expansion bill into law, it included language that enacted a 15 percent wholesale tax on e-cigarettes.

It took effect July 1, and is the first time the state taxed the product. The revenue collected will be used to help fund a new capital infrastructure plan.

Also included in that law is a $1 hike in the cigarette tax, to $2.98 per pack. Josh Sharp, executive vice president of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association and Association of Convenience Stores, said the money Illinois collects from that tax increase is earmarked for the same improvement projects.

The Department of Public Health allocates other revenues collected from the tobacco usage tax toward a cessation program and Medicaid.

Banning flavored tobacco products, Sharp said, is a “tremendously bad deal financially” for the state.

He added this legislation is a product of lawmakers attempting to address the growing number of severe respiratory illnesses related to vaping.

“I don’t really think it fixes the problem it’s intended to solve,” Sharp said. “If you want to fix vaping, fix the vaping issue.”

According to the Department of Public Health, 153 people in Illinois have been sickened with lung injuries resulting from the inhalation of chemicals from vaping. Forty-one others are being examined to see if their illnesses are related. Two Illi-

nois residents have died.

Each of them reported using either an e-cigarette or other product such as THC. There are more than 50 products and devices linked to the state’s cases, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.

Teml said he does not think lawmakers are “educated” on this issue.

“I think it’s our job, and that’s exactly why we’re here today. ... It’s not that they’re overreaching—it’s that a lot of them just don’t know what’s going on,” Teml said. “They don’t know our industry.”

The Smoke Free Alternatives Coalition made its plea to lawmakers the same day U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, a Democrat, called for an update from the Food and Drug Administration on its pending flavored e-cigarette product ban.

The administration issued a news release Sept. 11 about its plans to publish a compliance policy to “tackle the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use.” It has not distributed an update since.

“Six weeks ago, FDA finally announced a ban on e-cigarette flavors, including mint and menthol—a move that I have called on the FDA to make for years,” Durbin said in a news release. “It is past time for the FDA to put into effect what they announced weeks ago, and what they should have done years ago.”

Conroy’s House Bill 3883 was scheduled for a committee hearing Monday. Fifteen bipartisan lawmakers have signed on in support of the measure.

Advice from a ‘Scientist For Nones, Nuns And All’ Father John Francis Kartje presents Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Lecture

With doctoral degrees in both scripture and astrophysics, Father John Francis Kartje brings unique insight to the exploration of how faith and science inform each other.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13 beginning at 7:30 p.m., Kartje will present “How to Engage Mystery: Advice from a Scientist for Nones, Nuns and All,” this year’s Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Lecture.

Kartje is rector of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, also known as Mundelein Seminary.

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2002 and has served in parish and campus ministry in both Chicago and Washington, D.C. He holds doctoral degrees in scripture from the Catholic University of America, and in astrophysics from the University of Chicago.

The Bernardin Lecture will take place in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge on the campus of Elmhurst College.

we’d be home. I thought it was ingenious – not to mention efficient.

Thinking back it sort of was. I was a kid before my time.

After returning from our candy procurement we set about the task of sorting. My sister and I spilled our sacks onto separate ends of the living room and began grouping and counting. Seven Kit Kats, 14 Skittles, nine Laffy Taffy, a popcorn ball and so on. Each different type had its own pile on the floor.

When we finished sorting and counting our loot, the trading began.

I liked Reese’s, my sister preferred Snickers so we’d make a few swaps to bulk up on our favorites.

It goes without saying that during the sorting and trading process we both partook in a sampling of the merchandise.

At the end of it all it was clearly time for bed but we were sugared up and sleep was elusive. My head hit the pillow and I counted – not sheep but mini candy bars waiting for me in my sack.

My sister and I had the same routine every Halloween, but the day after Halloween and the days following we differed in our approaches to our respective stashes.

My sister was a normal child. She ate her candy. She enjoyed it. By mid-November her bag was empty or nearly so. There may be been a couple of packs of Smartees left, but that was it.

I was not a normal child, as can be evidenced by my complex route routine on Halloween night. I’d worked very hard for my sack of candy. I’d planned and schemed

for weeks. Every mini bag of M & M’s had been earned with my own blood, sweat and tears.

So I did what any abnormal, Type-A, candy-focused kid would do. I hoarded my goods. I rationed them carefully, nibbled sparingly.

I hesitated to open any Reese’s because I was saving the best for last. November passed, as did January and March. Summer came and went and still my bag remained not empty.

Of course I made a decent dent and savored the occasional Reese’s, but come the next October I still had candy, and on Halloween I often had to toss out the remnants of the last year’s stash in order to make room for the incoming.

I’m no longer Type-A – on Halloween or any other day of the year. But I miss the planning days of a type-A kid on Halloween. There was a certain joy to it. A controlled joy.

I do enjoy passing out candy on Halloween night. I suppose there’s some sort of control issue wrapped within the bars of chocolate I’m giving out. But I always make sure to give kids (the young ones especially) a hefty handful. After dark, we turn out the lights and I finally experience what I’ve been waiting for all day: the savoring of one last late night-Reese’s.

Illinois is “showing progress” toward the state Department of Public Health’s three-year goal of reducing opioid deaths by one-third by 2020, an official told lawmakers Oct. 21.

That initiative was set by former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration in an action plan implemented in 2017, with a focus on prevention, treatment and community response.

Jenny Epstein, director of strategic opioid initiatives, said the number of opioid overdose deaths in Il-

linois decreased in 2018 for the first time in five years. There were 2,167 opioid deaths in Illinois last year, down from 2,202 in 2017.

“Although any decrease in deaths is something to be celebrated, this decrease was driven primarily by a decline in deaths among non-Hispanic whites,” she said.

The rate of opioid overdoses “continued to increase” among black and Hispanic residents during the same time period, highlighting a “persistent disparity.”

“IDPH and its partner agencies agree that substance use disorder must be examined through a healthy equity lens, and that evidence-based policies and programs need to be prioritized to increase access to

treatment and reduce risk of overdose for this high-risk population,” Epstein said.

She presented the information to a special panel of state senators formed to assess Illinois’ strategy to tackle the opioid crisis and create bills to address any issues it discovers. Monday was the Opioid Crisis Abatement committee’s first meeting.

Says new-look process guided by ‘highest standards of transparency and ethics’

Lawmakers and Illinois Department of Transportation officials released details of a new $23.5 billion multiyear plan for revamping the state’s roads and bridges at a bipartisan event in Springfield Oct. 21.

Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker stood in front of two orange work trucks and a fleet of yellow-vested construction workers as he and speakers from both parties hailed the plan as one that would stimulate the state’s economy and usher in a new era of bipartisanship and effective government in Illinois.

Acting IDOT Secretary Omer Osman, a Pritzker appointee, said slightly more than $9 billion of the $23.5 billion that will be spent from fiscal years 2020-2025 will come from the federal government, about 39 percent of the total funding. He said the passage of the horizontal infrastructure bill this May upped the state’s contribution to the multi-year plan from 12 percent to 58 percent.

The money will go toward maintaining 4,212 miles of roadways and 9.2 million square feet of bridges, according to the governor’s office. The projects on the list were identified “based on the principles of asset management” to “maximize system performance and minimize lifecycle costs.”

Factors that help determine which projects will be completed and the order of construction include crash history, pavement condition, average daily traffic and bridge condition.

“This is a big change from how previous capital programs have done this in the past when the state would let roads and bridges deteriorate so thoroughly that repairs have cost taxpayers far more than if they’d been maintained to a minimum standard,” Pritzker said. “Instead, we are embarking on a new regimen of investing on the front end. This is a historic improvement which will save taxpayers potentially billions of dollars over the long run.”

According to the governor’s office, 75 percent of the funds are allocated to reconstructing and preserving roadways and bridges, while 16 percent is dedicated “to strategically expanding the system in areas where data have shown the investment will be highly effective.”

The rest will go to “necessary traffic and safety improvements.”

In total, $7.58 billion will go toward roadway reconstruction and preservation, $4.99 billion to bridge replacements and repairs, $1.59 billion to “safety and system modernizations,” $3.08 billion to strategic expansion of the system and $2.11 billion for system support such as engineering and land acquisition, according to the governor’s office.

Pervasive during the news conference were questions about the ethics of the project selection process, given the

ongoing probe of one of the capital bill’s chief architects, Sen. Martin Sandoval, and a growing list of other government officials.

In his public remarks, Pritzker said the state would follow “a rigorous and objective procurement process with the highest standards of transparency and ethics,” and “taxpayers need to know that their resources are being used wisely and effectively.”

“Let me be clear about something. There is no, no acceptance in any way whatsoever—in fact, a fullthroated rejection by my administration, by this IDOT— of any of the deception of the corruption that has been uncovered and that may yet be uncovered,” Pritzker said when asked about the ongoing federal probe. “We are being extremely focused and careful to make sure that every dollar that gets spent in this capital plan is done completely above board and done the right way and with taxpayers in mind.”

There have been no official charges of wrongdoing resulting from several high-profile raids on elected officials in recent weeks. But Sandoval, a Chicago Democrat who carried the horizontal infrastructure bill in the Senate and hosted a series of committee hearings across the state to build support for it, resigned as chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee following raids on his Statehouse and district offices in September.

Sandoval has not appeared publicly since those raids occurred, and he was not at the news conference Monday. But Sens. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, and Don DeWitte, R-St. Charles, who traveled the state with Sandoval’s committee, each praised the bill and the processes in place to determine how the money will be spent.

“Ultimately, beyond just repairing roads and fixing bridges that are in desperate need of repair, this bill … is going to put thousands of people, thousands of people to work in all parts of Illinois,” Manar said. “That helps out every part of our state’s economy, and this is a sustainable program that’s going to be paying dividends to the people of the state for years to come.”

DeWitte said he “couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this new era that we have begun for the state of Illinois” as he praised the bipartisan effort.

“Instead of continuing the status quo, leaders from both sides of the aisle and Governor Pritzker and his staff came forward with real solutions to the challenges that face communities all over the state of Illinois,” DeWitte said. “This capital plan is going to do exactly what its name promises to do, it will rebuild Illinois.”

The road and bridge infrastructure spending is separate from building infrastructure money which will be generated by a massive gambling expansion in the state. The roads and bridges are primarily funded by an increase of the state’s gas tax to 38 cents per gallon from 19 cents, with the tax indexed for inflation going forward.

vices’ Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery have coled the statewide effort to lower the number of opioid-related deaths in Illinois. Officials there have coordinated with other agencies, among them the Department of Corrections, the State Police, Criminal Justice Information Authority and Healthcare and Family Services.

“Although we are proud to have made some progress, there is still much work to be done to keep our citizens safe and healthy,” Epstein said.

Vaping industry opposes flavored product ban Legislation scheduled for hearing Monday has stakeholder opposition

Vaping and other industry stakeholders opposing legislation banning flavored products said Oct. 24 the bill would have negative health and economic impacts.

Democratic Villa Park Rep. Deb Conroy’s Flavored Tobacco Ban Act would outlaw the sale or distribution of nicotine products with a “distinguishable taste or aroma.”

It applies to cigarettes, cigars, hookahs, chewing tobacco, vape pods and other products. The bill was set for consideration when lawmakers returned to the statehouse Monday for the fall veto session.

Members of the Smoke Free Alternatives Coalition and vape business owners said during a news event at the Capitol that prohibition would “drive well over 100,000 Illinois adults back to smoking traditional cigarettes” and devastate their businesses.

“We are not big tobacco. We started this business to keep adult smokers off combustible cigarettes, and flavored e-liquid makes up 98 percent of our business because adult smokers prefer flavors,” said Tim Teml, co-owner of That 1 Vape in Joliet. “Our biggest fear is that the temptation of easily-available cigarettes will drive them back to smoking without flavored e-liquid options, not the loss of revenue.”

When Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a gambling expansion bill into law, it included language that enacted a 15 percent wholesale tax on e-cigarettes. It took effect July 1, and is the first time the state taxed the product. The revenue collected will be used to help fund a new capital infrastructure plan.

Also included in that law is a $1 hike in the cigarette tax, to $2.98 per pack. Josh Sharp, executive vice president of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association and Association of Convenience Stores, said the money Illinois collects from that tax increase is earmarked for the same improvement projects.

The Department of Public Health allocates other revenues collected from the tobacco usage tax toward

a cessation program and Medicaid.

Banning flavored tobacco products, Sharp said, is a “tremendously bad deal financially” for the state.

He added this legislation is a product of lawmakers attempting to address the growing number of severe respiratory illnesses related to vaping.

“I don’t really think it fixes the problem it’s intended to solve,” Sharp said. “If you want to fix vaping, fix the vaping issue.”

According to the Department of Public Health, 153 people in Illinois have been sickened with lung injuries resulting from the inhalation of chemicals from vaping. Forty-one others are being examined to see if their illnesses are related. Two Illinois residents have died.

Each of them reported using either an e-cigarette or other product such as THC. There are more than 50 products and devices linked to the state’s cases, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.

Teml said he does not think lawmakers are “educated” on this issue.

“I think it’s our job, and that’s exactly why we’re here today. ... It’s not that they’re overreaching—it’s that a lot of them just don’t know what’s going on,” Teml said. “They don’t know our industry.”

The Smoke Free Alternatives Coalition made its plea to lawmakers the same day U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, a Democrat, called for an update from the Food and Drug Administration on its pending flavored e-cigarette product ban.

The administration issued a news release Sept. 11 about its plans to publish a compliance policy to “tackle the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use.” It has not distributed an update since.

“Six weeks ago, FDA finally announced a ban on e-cigarette flavors, including mint and menthol—a move that I have called on the FDA to make for years,” Durbin said in a news release. “It is past time for the FDA to put into effect what they announced weeks ago, and what they should have done years ago.”

Conroy’s House Bill 3883 was scheduled for a committee hearing Monday. Fifteen bipartisan lawmakers have signed on in support of the measure.

Warriors close out another perfect conference season Three straight 6-0 campaigns; Playoffs begin with this week’s home game against Moline

The Willowbrook football team finished off its third consecutive unblemished West Suburban Gold Conference season with Friday’s 44-6 home victory over Proviso East. The decisive win in the regular-season finale gave the Warriors their third straight 6-0 campaign in conference play.

Willowbrook completed the season with an 8-1 record. The Warriors, who have won eight straight games, will open the IHSA Class 7A playoffs with this week’s home game against Moline (5-4). If the Warriors beat Moline, they would face Yorkville or Thornton Fractional South in the second round.

The Warriors, who are making their fourth straight playoff appearance, have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. Willowbrook won a pair of playoff games in 2016, 2017 and 2018 before bowing out of the post-season with a loss in the quarterfinal round.

Willowbrook built a 44-0 halftime lead over Proviso East, which finished the season at 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

The Pirates began last week with an overall record of 6-2, but in the middle of the week, Proviso East learned it would have to forfeit four of its six victories for using an ineligible player. Three of the Pirates’ forfeits came in conference games against Addison Trail, Leyden and Morton. Tumilty scored the first touchdown of the period on a 19-yard run. He then connected with Holliday on a 4-yard touchdown pass. A short time later, the Tumilty-Holliday duo connected on a 22-yard touchdown pass that helped raise the Warriors’ lead to 30-0. Holliday tied the program record for career touchdown receptions with his third TD catch of the night.

The score gave Holliday 17 touchdown receptions in his career as a Warrior. Holliday matched the mark of Hayden Adams, who graduated from Willowbrook in 2014.

“That last one hit home; I knew I

Hildreth has known Holliday since the senior standout was in grade school. Before coming to Willowbrook, Holliday took part in Hildreth’s youth football camps at the school.

“As a player, he’s been vital to our success in his three years on the varsity level,” said Hildreth of Holliday.

Holliday scored a defensive touchdown to increase the Warriors’ lead to 36-0. He intercepted a Proviso East pass and raced 46 yards for a touchdown with about five minutes left in the first half.

Hildreth frequently refers to something his collegiate coach at Lake Forest College instilled—that each season is like a heartbeat. Some of the same players and coaches can return from one season to the next, but each season is unique, and the ending can be abrupt and painful.

On the relay front, Murphy said there is a bit of a change in the air this season. While AT/Willowbrook usually is strongest in the freestyle relays, this fall it’s the medley relay.

“We usually are pretty good in the freestyles,” Murphy pointed out.

“We’re pretty solid this year in the medley, which is a bit of a change.”

The medley relay team picks from the likes of Gayon, Zaprzal, Addison Trail junior Nancy Obrzut, Willowbrook’s DeAnna Tate and Pociecha.

Tate and Obrzut give AT/Willowbrook two strong entries into the 50 freestyle as well.

“DeAnna Tate is tremendously improved from last year,” said Murphy.

Looking ahead to the Nov. 16 York Sectional in Elmhurst, Murphy noted Obrzut in the 50 and Zaprzal in the breaststroke could be in the state-berth contention conversation.

“Nancy is a possibility in the 50 and Carly is fairly close to the cut in the breaststroke,” she noted.

Murphy said consistency has been one key to the team’s success this season.

“We have more girls who are consistently strong, which is a positive,” she said. “We are younger and we have more girls who can do more things, and that’s helped us be successful.”

Oakbrook Terrace Historical Society Community calendar to host 2-week exhibit on Dispensa’s Kiddie Kingdom and Castle of Toys The Oakbrook Terrace Historical Society will be hosting a two-week exhibit on Dispensa’s Kiddie Kingdom and Castle of Toys.

The event will be held at the Oakbrook Terrace Historical Society’s historic Sears Homart Home located at 17W245 16th St., Oakbrook Terrace, from Nov. 2 through Nov. 16.

Parents and kids enjoyed the experience and there are many fond memories. John Dispensa, III, great grandson of the founder, said his great grandfather created the idea to provide an affordable family outing at an amusement park.

It’s been proven time and again that conservative economic policies such as lower taxes and fewer regulations on businesses boost the economy. To his credit, Trump has adopted these policies and the economy is doing very well. What hurts Donald Trump, in my opinion, is that he injects himself into everything and is constantly vindictive and petty instead of picking his fights and letting his economic policies do the talking. Likeability is a factor when choosing a president, and outside of his base, a majority of people don’t like Donald Trump.

The amusement park known as Kiddie Kingdom advertised rides for a quarter or six rides for a dollar.

Dispensa himself will hold a presentation at the Oakbrook Terrace City Council Chambers on Nov. 11 from 7:30-9 p.m. Dispensa plans to talk about the amusement park and family history.

Dispensa and Sons started in 1919 when his greatgrandfather purchased a Ferris wheel, which grew into a carnival.

The Dispensas eventually added a toy store and a permanent amusement park to the land they had owned in Oakbrook Terrace. The business completely shut down in 1985. This year they would have celebrated 100 years.

There will be cake to celebrate 100 years at the presentation. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

Their mission is to provide young athletes with disabilities opportunities to participate in an array of community based sports in a fun and meaningful way.

All aboard for Model Railroad Madness Chugging into the Elmhurst History Museum on Nov. 16 Trains have a way of engaging kids and adults of all ages, especially those who are enamored by the model railroad variety. The intricate track layouts with detailed railroad cars, terrains, people, and buildings have a special way of connecting with train enthusiasts and serious hobbyists alike.

The Elmhurst History Museum invites model train fans to join in a day of small-scale railroading fun on Saturday, Nov. 16 during Model Railroad Madness from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event takes place in the museum’s Education Center, locat-

ed at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst.

Model Railroad Madness is presented by members of Chicagoland T-Trak, a group of railroad modelers and collectors that run “N-scale” trains on modular layouts. Kids can also make their own paper engineer hats and Morse code beaded bracelets while supplies last.

D88 students experience ‘OUR HOME iMPROVEMENT’

On Oct. 22, more than 50 Addison Trail and Willowbrook students participated in a hands-on experience at OUR HOME iMPROVEMENT (OHi) in Elk Grove Village, pictured here. The field trip was the second of a four-part series, where District 88 pupils travel to OHi every month through December to attend classes on various industry topics and to work on a job site.

First, students learned about design, foundation and framing and received an initial trade presentation. At the second, they learned about plumbing, HVAC and electrical work. After completing the classes and on-site training, the plan is to have the participants apply and interview for a summer apprenticeship with OHi.

Willowbrook boys soccer team pulls off playoff upset

Warriors defense up to task in win against Wheaton-Warrenville South

The Willowbrook boys soccer team was rewarded for its improved play during the second half of the season.

The Warriors were 2-1 upset winners in penalty kicks against Wheaton-Warrenville South in an Oct. 19 quarterfinal match at the IHSA Class

3A Lake Park Regional.

Willowbrook came into the game as the No. 18 seed out of 18 teams in the St. Charles East sectional.

Wheaton-South was the No. 14 seed.

Norman Deci had Willowbrook’s only goal in regulation. The Warriors scored four goals during the penalty kick phase with Ruben Valle earning the game-winner for the Warriors. Isai Aparicio earned the win in goal for the Warriors.

“We came in as a major underdog,” said Willowbrook coach Dan Riskind.

2 Willowbrook seniors named Commended Students in 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the U.S. are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of the approximately 1.6 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®).

“We really worked hard defensively the last five or six games. The last few games we have been very tough defensively.”

The two teams played to a scoreless tie at halftime. Riskind noted he changed the lineup from a 4-2-3-1 formation to a 3-5-2 with five midfielders and two forwards.

“We were in a desperate situation so we put in five midfielders and moved to two forwards,” Riskind explained.

“Dorian Mahone set up that goal and Norm put it in.”

Riskind lauded the efforts of many in the win. “Isai played great in goal for us,” he said. “Brian Fuentes and Kevin Kapica, our two center backs, shored everything up. This was really a team effort. We got a lot better as the game went on. Alex Kuban is a sophomore outside back who has really come on strong. Ruben played well and so did our two CDMs (central defensive midfielders), Kalep Martinez and Devin Guallpa.”

Willowbrook’s season then came to a close with a 3-0 loss to St. Charles East in the regional semifinals on Oct. 23. St. Charles East was the No. 2 seed in the sectional and recently lost to York in a regional title game.

“We were tied 0-0 at half against St. Charles East,” Riskind pointed out.

“We had a chance to win it. We didn’t have enough possession in the game to pull it off.”

Willowbrook finished the season with a 7-13-1 record.

“We saw a lot of improvement,” said Riskind. “In early October we got crushed by Glenbard West and after that we really focused on things defensively.”

Riskind said the team played well in recent games against Hinsdale South (3-2 loss in overtime), plus wins

against Montini and Proviso East.

“We played West Chicago early in the season and they crushed us 8-0 and then we lost to them recently 4-1,” Riskind said. “We started to put the results together and really made some progress. Beating Wheaton-Warrenville South was a good result for us.”

Riskind noted this year’s team was senior-heavy. “We have a lot of strong seniors on the team who are graduating,” he said. “They are good leaders.

We are going to need to replenish after they leave.

“Norm had 16 goals for us. Dorian is a great player. Devin Guallpa was one of our captains and was really

strong. He was a CDM player who held everything together. Brian Fuentes was a center back and another one of our captains who calmed things down for us. We had a lot of good players.

Franny Perez was an outside midfielder who has great skills. We will miss all of them.”

Riskind noted Deci and Mahone were nominated for all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors.

“We’re looking forward to next season,” Riskind said. “We had a lot of fun with this group. The kids worked hard.

They were fun to coach. Our record might not have been great, but it was a rewarding season, for sure.”

The Willowbrook girls cross country team is off to the sectional round.

The Warriors finished fifth at Saturday’s Class 3A Glenbard West Regional and earned a team-qualifying spot in this Saturday’s Class 3A Lake Park Sectional at the Lake Park east campus.

Willowbrook finished with 145 team points. Junior Melissa Martinez was the Warriors’ first runner through the chute. She took 19th in the 3-mile race with a finishing time of 18 minutes, 55 seconds.

Senior Madeleine Wilkie (19:29) was 26th.

Freshman Amelia Barrington (19:53) placed 31st, while sophomore Madeline Barrington (20:05) was 34th.

Addison Trail cross country runners advance to sectional Blazers football team finishes season with win; awarded additional forfeit victory over Proviso East

Both Addison Trail cross country teams will be represented at Saturday’s Class 3A Lake Park sectional.

The Addison Trail girls cross

country team finished eighth at the Class 3A Glenbard West regional at Camera Park in Glendale Heights with 230 team points.

Addison Trail advanced two individuals to the sectional round.

Junior Viviana Sanfilippo finished 11th overall in the race with a time of 18:16. Sophomore Maddie Ford also qualified after finishing 43rd with a time of 20:29.

Blazers boys soccer team falls in regional Addison Trail finishes season with 13 victories

The Addison Trail boys soccer team was on the wrong end of an upset.

The Blazers, seeded No. 4 in the Class 3A St. Charles East sectional, were indeed upset by a 2-1 count to No. 13 seed St. Charles North in the semifinals of the Class 3A St. Charles North sectional.

St. Charles North led 1-0. The teams traded single goals in the second half.

Addison Trail finished the season 13-5-3 overall and went 5-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

The Blazers wrapped up their regular season with a 2-0-1 mark in a three-game stretch. Addison Trail defeated Chicago Mt. Carmel 4-2, tied Hinsdale Central 0-0 in a West Suburban Conference crossover game and downed Leyden 1-0 to close out WSC Gold Division play.

Heading into the playoffs, junior forward Aaron Sanchez had registered 17 goals and five assists. Junior forward Anthony Hernandez had 13 goals and four assists, while senior midfielder Leo Acosta had six goals and a team-high 14 assists.

During that three-game stretch, coach Ryan Dini was pleased with his squad’s defensive performance.

“Our team defense has really improved,” he said earlier last week. “We had two shutouts in that span against two very good teams.”

Addison Trail finished the season with six shutouts.

“We have been a pretty good defensive team all season,” Dini noted.

“We have six defenders we rotate for our four spots so this unit has a lot of chemistry. We have played a lot of really good offensive teams as well, so this gives those guys confidence when we play well.”

Dini noted senior goalie Ernesto Padua was back after going down with a leg injury recently.

“He looked a lot better in his movements in the net,” he said. “Ernesto has been rock-solid all season. He is very consistent in his play and has made some huge saves for us this season. We have worked on improving a few of his weaknesses, so this has helped him clean up some of those things. He is a really good goalie and we are lucky to have him.”

Dini also saw a difference in team chemistry down the stretch.

“Our team has become a lot closer the past couple weeks,” he said.

“We have done a lot of team bonding events in the past month and team dinners. This has helped our communication on the field and getting everyone invested in our season. Accountability has been a main focus from watching film, working hard in practice and playing for each other.”

Dini said the team worked hard on its passing game throughout the season.

“Our offense has been up and down,” he said. “We have worked a lot on our passing, which was not very good to start the year. Almost every drill we do, we limit the amount of touches each player can have before they have to pass or shoot. It’s really helped our players know what to do with the ball before they receive it and has increased our creativity in the offensive third.”

The coach also cited recent strong play from junior left defender Ray Fischer and junior center-mid Eric Garcia.

“Ray has been really good all year and he really never comes off the field,” the coach said. “We plug him into his spot and he does his job day in and day out. He’s also a really good student, which helps in paying attention to details for our scouting report against our opponents.”

Dini pointed out that Garcia plays about half of each game and has taken the next step when it comes to winning back the soccer ball when the Blazers are in defensive mode. “Eric is really good at this and helps us get back into the offensive end,” Dini said. “He has been a big surprise this year with how fast he has developed at one of the hardest positions on the field.”

The Blazers only loss in conference this season was to Morton, which won a Class 3A regional title last week and is playing in the Class 3A Lyons Township sectional this week.

The Fenton boys and girls cross country teams are coming home.

The Bison squads both advanced out of the Class 2A St. Viator regional and will compete in Saturday’s Class 2A Fenton sectional at Fenton High School where berths in the Class 2A state finals will be up for grabs.

Fenton’s boys cross country team was fourth at St. Viator with 86 points and was five points out of the third-place position.

Senior Sam Elizondo finished fourth overall in the race with a time of 16:25. Senior Jimmy Palumbo was 11th at 17:07, while junior Matthew Sisto was 14th at 17:18.

Freshman Victor Vazquez finished

26th at 17:51, while junior Juan Sosa was 31st at 18:12. Freshman Emilio Sanchez was 39th at 19:10 and junior Chris Kovich was 40th in 19:23.

Girls cross country The Fenton girls cross country team took fifth at the Class 2A St. Viator regional and also earned a berth in the sectional. Fenton finished with 129 points.

Sophomore Ally Durkowski was 17th with a time of 20:49 to lead the way for the Bison. Freshman Samantha Matuk was 21st at 21:14, while junior Guadalupe Honorato was 25th at 21:44.

Freshman Tania Miranda was 32nd at 22:27, while sophomore Carolina Rosas was 34th at 22:39.

Junior Lissette Hernandez took 40th at 23:42 and junior Angelika Gasior was 42nd in 25:05.

Boys soccer The Fenton boys soccer team

dropped a 4-0 decision to Benet Academy in the championship game of the Class 2A Glenbard South regional in Glen Ellyn.

Fenton advanced to the regional final after recording a 2-1 win against host Glenbard South in the regional semifinals.

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

Valentin Motta De Castro had a goal and an assist for the Bison, while Ethan Rojas had a goal and Ivan Jaramillo added an assist.

Daniel Villanueva made three saves in goal.

Earlier, Fenton closed out the regular season with a 3-1 win against Elgin Larkin in Upstate Eight Conference play.

Senior Konrad Madej had two goals, while Jaramillo had a goal and an assist. Motta De Castro had one assist.

Pritzker unveils five-year economic plan, touts ‘strong job growth’

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity recently introduced a fiveyear economic plan, focusing on six industries that can boost the state’s economy and a variety of programs to build its workforce and encourage population growth.

It’s the first such plan since former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn released his in July 2014, when he declared, “Illinois is in the midst of a resurgence.”

“Over the past five years, the state has battled back from the worst financial crisis in seven decades to put the economy on a positive trajectory,” Quinn said in his 2014 plan.

Pritzker had similar sentiments in this year’s plan. He touted his first seven months in office and emphasized the passage of a $45 billion capital infrastructure plan, legalized

recreational marijuana and sports gambling, and the passage of several pro-business reforms.

“For the first time in nearly two decades, we’ve seen simultaneous strong job growth in every region of the state,” Pritzker wrote in the plan’s executive summary. “Underlying my vision is the fundamental principle of equity. No matter their zip code, every Illinoisan deserves economic opportunity. Where in the past sustainable and inclusive economic development has been elusive, instead I am committed to reinvigorating the most important foundational element of Illinois’ economy: our diverse and talented workforce.”

The report, which serves as a loose guiding document rather than binding public policy, also listed challenges to overcome, including outmigration.

“Illinois has experienced a mild outbound migration of approximate-

ly 0.3 percent on average for the past five years,” according to the report.

“This trend is driven particularly by migration among young people, minorities, and rural populations.”

The Illinois Board of Higher Education reported this year that 48.4 percent of Illinois public high school graduates who enrolled in a fouryear institution in 2017 chose an outof-state institution.

Pritzker’s plan calls for a 50 percent funding increase for Monetary Award Program grants from 2019 levels by fiscal year 2023. Those grants go to college students that have a financial need and help them attend college in Illinois.

The report added: “New business creation in communities of color and a downstate revitalization effort undertaken since the beginning of 2019 are intended to reverse outmigration in communities that have historically suffered disinvestment.”
