Mike’s Market of Villa Park is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. As part of the celebration, Mike’s held special events during each of the five Saturdays in August. The business at 32 S. Villa Ave. served free food to its customers during each of those events. Mike’s Market also sold $5 raffle tickets during each of those Saturdays in August. The raffle prizes included a Weber Summit S-470 gas grill. Last week, Mike’s Market presented its raffle proceeds—over $6,200—to Easterseals DuPage & Fox Valley in Villa Park.

County offering LIHEAP Energy Assistance DuPage County Community Services will be accepting applications for the annual Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) beginning Oct. 1 until May 31, 2020, or until funds are depleted. As cold temperatures are just around the corner, eligible families are encouraged to apply.

Beginning Oct. 1, DuPage County Department of Community Services will accept winter heating applications, by appointment, from seniors (60+) or people with disabilities. Beginning Nov. 1, applications will be taken for seniors, disabled, disconnected and households with children

5 or under. All other eligible households may begin applying on Dec. 2.

Benefits are paid directly to the utilities on behalf of eligible households.

If your household’s combined gross income for the 30 days beginning with the date of the application is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, you may be eligible to receive assistance. A single-person household can qualify for the program with a monthly gross income of up to $1,561; a two-person household up to $2,114; and a family of four can earn up to $3,219.

The PIPP Program (Percentage of Income Payment Plan) will also be

offered this program year to ComEd and Nicor Gas customers. Under PIPP, eligible households pay a percentage of their income, may receive a monthly benefit to their utility bill, and arrearage reduction for every ontime payment they make, if applicable. Starting Oct. 1, PIPP applications will be taken on a first-come, firstserved basis. Application for PIPP are taken Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, or until funding is exhausted.

Customers must bring the following required documentation when applying for assistance: • Social Security Cards for all household members;

• Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day period beginning with the date of application; • Current heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days (if they pay for the energy directly); and • If you rent, your lease.

Attorney explains state’s Tax Delinquency Amnesty Act The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDR) is offering a rare opportunity for taxpayers in Illinois who owe delinquent taxes to the state to rectify the issue without paying penalties or interest. This very limited time program, the “2019 Tax Delinquency Amnesty Act” is designed to help taxpayers bring themselves into good standing with the IDR, clear up their outstanding debt and leave their Illinois tax issues behind them.

“This is a rare opportunity to reduce or eliminate your State of Illinois tax liability and avoid paying penalties and interest,” said Patrick T. Sheehan, president of IRS Trouble Solvers in Elmhurst.

“This can add up to very significant savings to the tax-payer. This is a limited time opportunity that ends November 15, 2019, and dealing with the IDR is not an easy feat. I recommend that you work with a qualified tax resolution attorney to ensure that you meet all guidelines of the amnesty program and that you are eligible for amnesty.”

Here are several key items to know regarding the Tax Delinquency Amnesty Act.

What is the Tax Delinquency Amnesty Act? The Illinois Department of Revenue has announced that the 2019 Illinois Tax Amnesty Program will only be offered from October 1, 2019, through November 15, 2019. The amnesty program provides a rare opportunity for taxpayers to have certain penalties and interest waived for taxes paid in full during the amnesty program.

What is an eligible tax liability?

An eligible tax liability is a liability that was not reported or paid for the tax periods ending after June 30, 2011, and prior to July 1, 2018, for both businesses and individuals.

How does the program work?

If you qualify, and if you pay the eligible liability in full between October 1, 2019, and November 15, 2019, the IDR will forgive any penalties and interest that may be applicable. The IDR will not seek civil or criminal prosecution for any taxpayer for the amnesty period.

If you don’t pay all taxes due to the IDR, the IDR will not grant you amnesty.

Who is eligible?

You cannot be a party to any current criminal investigation or to any civil or criminal litigation with the IDR. “Given the extremely limited time of the amnesty program, and because of the expected large number of people who will attempt to seek amnesty, I strongly recommend you immediately reach out to a qualified tax resolution attorney immediately” said Sheehan.

For the ninth consecutive year, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin presented a balanced budget for consideration by the County Board.

The total proposed budget for DuPage County is $476 million, with a General Revenue Fund of $183.9 million and a $68.8 million property tax levy. The proposed budget includes a minor adjustment to the County’s property tax levy.

“DuPage County has held the line on property taxes since 2008, saving taxpayers more than $1.8 billion over the last two decades,” Cronin said. “This is a prudent, fiscally conservative path forward to ensure the County maintains a stable, secure source of revenue for programs and initiatives valued by our residents.

These are challenging times, but we will continue to reduce spending and improve operations whenever possible.”

Highlights of the Chairman’s proposed budget include: • Replacing the obsolete, 40-yearold property tax administration system • Purchasing poll books for the County Clerk’s Office to ease wait times at polling places • Increasing headcount in the Sheriff’s Office and replacing 16 patrol vehicles

outside to check the mail at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Her parents, Elizabeth and Brian, were home at the time. The Przybylskis live on Cornell Avenue, a couple of blocks east of Willowbrook High School.

Three days earlier, a coyote chased after the 5-year-old girl while she was in her front yard.

The coyote brushed against Christine before running away from the area. Christine went inside her home and informed her parents of the incident. A surveillance camera captured the coyote dashing at the girl.

Christine’s father uploaded a video clip to YouTube. Numerous media outlets broadcast the footage. At the time of the incident, Christine had been outside to check the mailbox for her Halloween costume. That costume arrived on Friday. Christine is a fan of the classic television show “I Dream of Jeannie.” She will dress as a genie this Halloween.

“We heard her scream,” said Elizabeth Przybylski of her daughter.

“She ran inside and said she just saw a coyote, and that he had chased her and brushed her.”

Elizabeth thought her daughter might have seen a coyote from a distance. Two days earlier, on Sept. 22, the family observed a coyote in the street near their home.

Shortly after the Sept. 24 incident, the Przybylskis checked the video from a home surveillance camera.

“When I saw it, it was like I was watching a horror movie,” said Elizabeth. “It was so terrifying for me. I know they [coyotes] are around, but you almost never see them.”

The surveillance video shows Christine skipping up the driveway toward her home. The coyote is visible at the end of the driveway. Christine then walks toward a swing in the front yard.

The coyote approaches her in the yard. When Christine noticed the animal, she turned around and ran toward the driveway. The coyote then

quickly charged toward her, brushing against her. The coyote then backed away in the yard, while Christine went to the front steps. At that time, a neighbor in a riding mower passed by on the street. The coyote then ran out of the Przybylskis’ yard.

“She stood there and sort of freaked out, then calmly walked inside,” said Elizabeth of her daughter.

I’m so glad she got away.”

A contractor working at the home was sitting in a truck in a driveway at the time of the incident. He didn’t see anything, but he did hear Christine scream.

Brian Przybylski uploaded the footage to YouTube shortly after the incident. It wasn’t long before several media outlets contacted him to ask for permission to broadcast the video. A Channel 7 news crew visited the Przybylskis later that day.

said an unknown suspect stole a metal lock box containing $1,700 from the basement of the business.

Sept. 17 Brandon Bickerstaff, 35, of Berwyn, was charged with retail theft at a local store at around 7:56 p.m.

Sept. 16 Cristian Garcia, 25, of West Chicago, was charged with two counts of DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, speeding and improper lane usage near North and Yale at around 12:49 a.m.

A 32-year-old Villa Park man was charged with two counts of domestic battery while a 31-year-old Chicago man was also charged with two counts of domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence in the 700 block of W. James at around 7:41 p.m.

Criminal damage to property was reported in the 500 block of N. Ardmore at around 9:59 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect threw a brick through a bedroom window.

Sept. 13-Sept. 16 Criminal damage to property was reported in the 900 block of North Avenue. Police said an unknown suspect shattered the front passenger window on an unoccupied vehicle left on the street sometime between 5:30 p.m.

Sept. 15 Raphael Hunter, 28, of Villa Park, was charged with battery, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to real property in the 400 block of N. Ardmore at around 4:16 p.m.

The suspects left the store without paying for the items.

Police said an unknown suspect threw two bricks through the front window of a house sometime between 12:24 and 12:59 a.m.

Theft of lost or mislaid property was reported at a local store. Police said an unknown suspect stole a cell phone that was lost or mislaid sometime between 4 and 5 p.m.

Sept. 12 Theft of lost or mislaid property was reported in the 1000 block of S. Villa at around 8 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect stole a debit card that was lost or mislaid.

Goodbye summer

It’s that time of year. School is in session. Backpacks line the back doorway. Yellow busses line the streets.

Bedtimes and wake-times are earlier than in the previous months. Mornings are resoundingly announced by alarm clocks – something unheard of during June, July and August.

Summer has officially ended. Sigh. The warm weather morphs into autumn and for my family that means one thing: closing up the cabin.

We wash bedding and empty the fridge thinking how pleasant it will be to return to a clean house next spring. We clean toilets that aren’t really even dirty. We scrub tubs and vacuum one last time. Even though these are chores, we are at the lake and the air somehow feels different. More peaceful.

More relaxing than at home. The lake will do that to you.

I pass out the last of the summer’s freezies to neighborhood kids, who have come to know that my fridge has a neverending supply. I let them pick their color of choice. Somehow purple and blue are always the first to go. I’m impressed that all of the children (or nearly so) say “Thank you” each time they are handed something as simple as a freezie pop.

My husband, sons and I muddle through getting the boat out of the water every year.

(Thank goodness for our sons’ help.) It is the one piece of stress associated with lake life. (That, and not catching any fish.)

with backing the trailer into the cool/cold lake water, lining up the pontoon so that it sits atop the metal supports, finding a way to get the trailer fitted precisely over the ball hitch and then remembering to hitch the hitch pin.

My husband often has to take off his shoes and socks and roll up his jeans to wade into the water and complete the task.

It’s exhausting – for me, and I’ve never had to put my feet into the cold water or hitch the hitch.

I’ll be honest and admit that when we’ve completed the task we’ve definitely reached an hour that’s happy.

At the end of the day, when all the chores are done, we sit on a neighbor’s deck and chat about everything and nothing. Where did summer go? Any vacations planned for the winter months? The deck is full because no one needs an invitation to socialize. Lake life is unscripted; it happens spontaneously, in the best of ways.

It’s a comfortable camaraderie that comes from being in a place, in a space, that just feels right and good and full and happy. Darkness comes too quickly and it’s time to return to the warmth and comfort of the cabin.

It’s always bittersweet – saying goodbye to the long, unhurried and carefree days at the lake. I’ve learned over the years that despite June feeling like the beginning of a decade-long summer, the season progresses at breakneck speed and the next 12 weeks unfold faster than a leap year February.

Probably faster.

I realize I am lucky. Although the end of something pleasant can be difficult, I know my family’s time at the cabin is precious and not something everyone can count on. Our time at the lake over the years has been life-illuminating. Even my kids acknowledge this truth; my husband and I a hundred times over that.

Our kids grew up as lake rats. I wouldn’t change that for anything. And now we have another generation – our grand daughter – who is learning to love the lake, or in her words, “wa-wa.” (Which is short for water, for those of you not fluent in toddlerspeak.)

Fall is here. Winter is coming. We are closing up our lake, but counting the days until next spring when we return. Can’t wait to put the boat back into the water.

7 Things you can do for a better memory

We all experience moments of forgetfulness and play the where’s my phone/keys/glasses game when they’re in our hand or pocket or on our head. There’s not a human alive past the age of 30 who has not at least once gone upstairs/ downstairs/to the kitchen and forgot why or what they were going to fetch or do.

Side note: For me, any parlay into the kitchen also requires a stop at the pantry for a cookie.

Yesterday I was foraging the cupboards looking for something sweet since I “knew” we had no cookies (I had eaten them all). I lamented out loud to myself “I wish we had some cookies!”

Then I remembered I had bought some at the store the day before! A brand new box awaited me in the pantry! Happy dance! My forgetfulness thus created a happy surprise for me -- so there is a silver lining in everything, even a less-thanperfect memory.

I don’t freak out over my forgettings. They are few and far between and oh so common among my fellow species. Our brains are overloaded.

For me, there is 55 years of data stored up there. I’m now purging and deleting things like Geography and Trigonometry terms so my brain has room for new useful information, like the fact that I did indeed buy cookies.

Driving home the other night I listened to the John Tesh “Intelligence for Your Life” radio program and he rattled off the seven things that people with good memories do. I patted myself on the back for doing all seven.

I knew I would want to write about these habits. When I got home, just two minutes later, I could only recall five of the seven habits mentioned. So much for my “high score” on memory habits.

A quick google check filled in the two blanks for me.

Thanks to my Prince Charming, we eat lovely fish and will up our frequency of doing so. (And to his credit, he does not eat cookies.)

The remaining six are: keep a daily journal; drink tea or coffee; do crossword puzzles; read novels/read for pleasure; watch less than one hour of television per day; and drink fewer than two alcoholic drinks per day.

Easy peasy.

The Tesh team got their information from Prevention magazine quoting an Australian study of over 29,000 people and these were the commonalities.

Perhaps you want to boost your memory ability. Now you have some things to try. Thaw some fish for dinner. Turn off the TV, get some tea instead of wine, and get in a comfy chair.

Read a little something lovely, do a quick crossword puzzle, and jot down a bit of your day in a diary or notebook. What did you do? How did you feel?

As a big fan of journaling, I know there is power when we put pen to paper so don’t just keep a log of activity. Use your journal to write your future. Write it as if it has already happened.

You can start with a simple affirmation: I have a great memory!

And now it’s time for me to saunter to the kitchen, with just one purpose so I won’t forget.

And you guessed it: a cookie. Enjoy!

In one case, the first side uses names that are made up to denigrate, and the other uses evidence found in tweets for the names. In the second, a professor was taken to task for comparing the beginning of the president’s time in office to other world leaders. But the reply focuses on the totality of their time in office which may not reflect on history repeating itself. So now the question is: can we wait to find out! *** If a motorcycle rider believes that he cannot safely ride a without illegally modifying the pipes on the bike so that they make markedly more noise than the bike was designed to make, he should not be riding a motorcycle. If motorcycles cannot be ridden safely without illegally modifying the pipes on the bike, they should be outlawed. Now, for all of the motorcycles in this town that are riding around with modified pipes—and they are easy to spot—it

Two years of investigations and the Mueller report turned up nothing, so now a whistleblower comes out of the woodwork and says Trump pressed Ukraine to investigate Biden and his son. I saw a column in the Sun-Times on Saturday (Sept. 28) where the columnist states: “There’s never been a graver political scandal in U.S. history.” Oh, please. To the left, anything and everything involving Trump is an impeachable scandal. The left is so predictable. *** Did anyone see the story about the Michigan government employee—a Democrat—who is facing multiple election fraud charges? This city clerk from the city of Southfield, who makes over $100,000 a year, is charged with six felonies for allegedly changing absentee ballots in the computer system to say they did not have valid signatures or return dates. But they allegedly did have valid signatures and return dates.

The voter fraud deniers, of course, repeatedly tell us there is no voter fraud, or it isn’t a serious problem.

How would you feel if your vote was wiped out by a corrupt government employee? ***

There is an old saying in the business world that goes something like this: “When business is running smoothly, the ‘nice guys’ can run the show and keep everyone happy, but when things are screwed up they send for the SOB’s, who will unpleasantly straighten things out quickly.” Well, this country is screwed up, and Trump was elected to straighten it out. He is not a nice guy. He is argumentative and abrasive, and draws much personal criticism, which is ironic considering that his political opposition has be-

Elizabeth Przybylski contacted the DuPage County Forest Preserve, which responded that it only deals with animals on forest preserve property. A DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputy did visit the Przybylski home on the night of the incident.

A few weeks before last week’s incident, the Villa Park Police Department reported the sighting of a coyote in the area of Harrison Street and Ardmore Avenue, which is about one block north and one block west of the Przybylski home.

In late August, following the sighting of the coyote near Harrison and Ardmore, the police depart-

ment issued a few safety tips for residents who might see a coyote.

Those tips include: keeping dogs on short leashes (no longer than 6 feet) while walking outside and keeping noisemakers (like whistles or horns) on hand to scare away coyotes that may enter your yard. People who see a coyote are also advised to wave their arms, clap their hands and shout in an authoritative voice.

“Don’t run away or turn your back on a coyote,” stated the tips from the police department. “Back away slowly and carefully from the coyote.”

Three days after the run-in with the coyote, Christine’s Halloween costume arrived in the mail. Christine is a fan of the television show “I Dream of Jeannie,” and she will be dressing as a genie on Halloween.

Warriors rout Addison Trail 42-12 in annual District 88 Bowl Homecoming win delayed by storms; Willowbrook grabs a 42-0 halftime lead

The Willowbrook football team improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the West Suburban Gold Conference following Saturday’s 42-12 victory over Addison Trail in Villa Park.

The Warriors dominated the visiting Blazers in the annual District 88 Bowl. Willowbrook scored touchdowns on its first six possessions to build a 42-0 halftime lead. The lead of at least 40 points led to a running clock during the second half of Willowbrook’s homecoming game, which was rescheduled to Saturday morning because of Friday’s storms.

“We’re always preparing for somebody else, but kind of focusing on ourselves,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth after the win. “I thought our guys adjusted well. The game was postponed late in the afternoon [on Friday]. We came back this morning and responded well to the change in schedule. Whenever, wherever—you’ve just got to be ready to play.”

The Warriors also built a 42-0 halftime lead in their previous game—a 42-7 conference victory at Leyden on Sept. 20.

Willowbrook, which has won four straight games since losing its season opener, will play a conference game

at Hinsdale South (3-2 overall, 2-0 in the conference) this Friday. The Hornets beat Downers Grove South 33-28 on Saturday.

“Hinsdale South always gives us trouble,” said Hildreth. “It will be another challenge this week.”

Beating Addison Trail allowed the Warriors to maintain possession of the District 88 Bowl trophy— known as “The Lady.” Willowbrook has won its last four meetings with the Blazers. Addison Trail fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference following Saturday’s loss.

Senior quarterback Sam Tumilty ran for touchdowns on the Warriors’ first three drives. He finished the first drive—a 49-yard drive—with a 20-yard touchdown run on a broken play. He added one more touchdown run later in the first quarter, barreling 14 yards for a score on a fourth-andtwo play. Tumilty broke several tackles before crossing the goal line.

Tumilty delivered a 22-yard run in the second quarter to complete a 77yard drive. The Warriors scored their next touchdown after senior Travis Moore blocked an Addison Trail punt. Moore recovered the loose ball and returned it to the 2-yard line.

Sophomore Jaylon White ran the ball

into the end zone on the next play.

The Blazers fumbled the ball on their next possession. Moore recovered the fumble at Addison Trail’s 18-yard line. Moments later, senior Ta’Vion Geanes scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Warriors scored their final touchdown when Tumilty threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to senior Everett Stubblefield with 3:33 left in the first half. Stubblefield was wide open on the sideline; he caught

Tumilty’s pass near the 20-yard line and trotted into the end zone.

Sophomore Izzy Manning, who made all six of her extra-point kicks in the game, booted the conversion kick after Stubblefield’s score to give the Warriors their 42-0 lead.

Addison Trail scored its first touchdown on a short run on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Blazers added another touchdown on an 18-yard pass with about six minutes left in the game.

Outlook: Two former Metro Suburban Conference foes reunite in Glen Ellyn on Friday night. This series dates back to the days when the MSC had five teams and teams were forced to play five non-conference games.

Both find themselves Upstate Eight Conference members now. Fenton has lost three in a row after last week’s 48-22 setback to Bartlett. Glenbard South’s only loss was to Bartlett by a somewhat similar 49-14 score. Glenbard South’s wins have come against Streamwood (Fenton lost to Streamwood), Elgin (21-12; Maroons are 1-4), East Aurora (34-21; the Tomcats defeated Streamwood in Week 5) and Elgin Larkin (12-6; Fenton beat Larkin 33-0 to start the season). At this junction in the season with playoff talk looming, wins start to become critical. A Fenton win here would change its season fortunes in a hurry. A loss gives the Bison little wiggle room the

Willowbrook boys golf team wins Addison Trail Ryder Cup-style quad

The Willowbrook boys golf team recently took home a championship contested under a unique format.

The Warriors won the Addison Trail Ryder Cup-style quad held at The Preserve at Oak Meadows (par 36 from the blues).

Willowbrook shot 108 in the Ryder Cup format. Addison Trail was second at 133. Morton had 144, while Glenbard North had 145.

The win moves the Warriors to 9-3 overall.

The Ryder Cup quad rules have each team bringing three teams of two golfers who play together and record one score on the scorecard.

Each team of two golfers plays three holes of alternate shot, three holes of best ball and three scramble holes.

For Willowbrook, the teams of Logan Rattana and Utah Keehner, Nick Cipriano and Brett Vandergrift and Andrew Rugg and Jake Cieslak all shot even-par 36.

Willowbrook was scheduled to compete in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet earlier this week at Prairie Bluff in Lockport ahead of this coming Monday’s Class 3A regional at Carriage Greens in Darien.

Girls volleyball The Willowbrook girls volleyball team was a recent 25-16, 2512 non-conference winner against Streamwood.

Things looking up for Addison Trail boys soccer team Blazers win four-team PepsiCo pod; will donate check to charity

The news was great on and off the field recently for the Addison Trail boys soccer team.

The Blazers downed St. Viator 2-0, Dundee-Crown 3-1 and Wheaton Academy 3-1 to win the PepsiCo Charity Pod Final. Coach Ryan Dini noted the Blazers will receive a check for winning its four-team pod and the program will be donating the check to Chicago Top Soccer, a charity organization that supports kids with special needs and gives them the opportunity to play soccer.

Addison Trail then lost 1-0 on penalty kicks to Wheaton-Warrenville South in the PespiCo semifinals.

“It was 0-0 at the end of regulation and we outshot them 22-4 and hit the post twice,” Dini noted. “Whea-

ton-Warrenville played all defense in the second half and had only one shot. They wanted to take us to penalty kicks. It was just bad luck that day for us, but that’s soccer. We couldn’t hit the back of the net.”

Addison Trail lost 5-4 in PKs. Through late last week Addison Trail was 9-2 overall and 2-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Statistically, junior forward Aaron Sanchez was leading the team in scoring with eight goals and four assists, while junior forward Anthony Hernandez had five goals and four assists. Senior midfielder Leo Acosta had three goals and eight assists.

“We are having a different player score every game, which makes it very hard to key on any guys on our team,” Dini said. “The team also is transitioning really well from defense to offense. Our team speed and depth is really giving our opponents trouble. We are subbing four to five guys at a time so our players are fresh

and are wearing down teams in the final third of the game.”

Team chemistry also has taken a leap forward, Dini noted. “Without a doubt,” he said. “Our players expect to win and put in the effort to be successful.

“We have made everything at practice a competition, so we are playing hard all the time. I also have seen our guys come together and enjoy being around each other. At the beginning of the season, we would score and only a guy or two would go and celebrate with our team. Now, the whole team celebrates and guys are pulling for each other. It’s been great to see and really a pleasure to see the growth of the unit.”

Dini labeled the team’s offense as consistent all season, while he pegs the Blazers’ defensive exploits as outstanding.

“We still have a couple players who are just a little off right now with finishing so we hope to fix that soon,” he said. “If everyone is on, we

are a very scary team to play against.

Our decision-making needs to improve in the final third of the field, as well as our creativity. We work on this constantly, so hopefully we will see more of this in games.”

Dini noted returning all-conference defender Martin Murillo has missed a recent stretch.

“We have stepped up in his absence,” the coach said. “We have played three solid teams over that stretch and have held them to two total goals. Martin should be back (Dini was hopeful that would be last weekend), which will give us a big boost because he is one of our best players.”

Defenders Angel Gomez (a junior) and Jose Villegas (a senior) have been rock-solid in the back for the Blazers.

“Angel has stepped up in the absence of Martin,” Dini said. “He is playing center back for us, which is

The Addison Trail boys cross country team had some success at the recent Fenton EarlyBird Invitational.

At the varsity level, Dylan Moran finished in 23rd place, while Alex Martinez was sixth in the frosh-soph race there.

Blazers coach Brad Donaldson said depth continues to improve for his team. “Our second team is progressing very well,” he said. “They are getting stronger and more confident in their racing and taking on a more competitive attitude.”

On the course, Donaldson is seeing stronger finishes from his runners. “We

have improved in the back-half of the race,” he explained. “They are looking to gain ground and close the race strong.”

Leadership has been another bright spot.

“What impresses me the most is their respect for each other as teammates,” he said. “They are a great group with great leadership.”

Individually, Donaldson likes the progress Cole Greaves and Jon Ramos

are making.

“Cole and Jon are coming on strong,” the coach said. “Their race conditioning is evolving and they are gaining confidence with every race and starting to learn how to push themselves through the second half of the race.”

Addison Trail runs at St. Charles Saturday.

“We have made solid progress this year,” said Donaldson. “We need our

third group to move up to a varsity level. We are still seeking a solid fifth score that can make us competitive.

That group, led by Daniel Alvarez and Aaron Paz, has been getting better every race and just needs to develop some more confidence in racing situations and that will help us a great deal.”

On the girls side, Addison Trail has been paced by Viviana Sanfilippo. She was 23rd overall in the varsity girls race at Fenton, which earned her a plaque.

She finished 39th overall in the Class 3A varsity girls First to Finish invitational in Peoria, which earned her a medal.

Coach Kirsten Olson also has been pleased with the efforts of Maddie Ford.

“Maddie has really shown a strong effort at competing and just missed a personal best in our double-dual against Morton and Leyden,” she noted.

I’m very proud of his effort and how he has stepped up.

“Jose has helped us with his long throw-ins on the offensive end. He also is very tall so he wins a lot of the 50-50 balls near the penalty box and in the middle for us. He also has stepped up in Martin’s absence.”

Continuing with the defensive theme, goalie Ernesto Padua has four shutouts in his first 10 games of action.

“He has let up only one goal in four of the games and in two games he let up only two goals,” Dini pointed out.

“He is a senior who has been very solid this season in net. He gives us great leadership and is a big reason why our record is so good.”

Dini likes how Addison Trail has navigated a demanding schedule thus far.

“I am very pleased with our progress and our record,” he said. “We have responded well to our schedule, and are really playing well as a team right now. Our juniors have adjusted to the speed of the varsity level and are giving us quality minutes. Our seniors have provided leadership and experience, which is needed against the better teams. I like the direction of the team right now and look forward to the second half of a very challenging schedule.”

Addison Trail was slated to play York earlier this week in a WSC crossover. York knocked the Blazers out of the playoffs two years ago and then Addison Trail won twice last year, including a 3-1 decision in a regional title game. York defeated Addison Trail in PKs in the semifinals of the 14-team summer league this past summer. “Needless to say, it’s a very good rivalry,” Dini said.

Addison Trail also was scheduled to honor it 15 seniors in the program for senior night earlier this week as well against Proviso East.

“I am very pleased with the season we are having so far,” Dini said. “We were not even preseason ranked in the top 50 in any rankings and now we are top 25 in every ranking. We graduated so many players last year, but we have rebounded well with our returning seniors and the juniors who are new to the team. To be 9-2 halfway through the season is a bit of a surprise, but it proves hard work does pay off.

Our only losses are by 1-0 in penalty shootouts, so our guys never give up. We have come from behind to win three games this year. Our second half of the schedule is very difficult, but we always plan it that way. It prepares us for the playoffs. We always want to play the best teams. That is how you get better.”

Dini heaped plenty of praise on new varsity assistant coach Angel Vega, a 2001 Addison Trail graduate.

Both Dini and Vega played the sport at Addison Trail.

“It has been a huge help having Angel with me,” said Dini. “He does a really nice job motivating our players and teaching them the game of soccer.

We both played at Addison Trail, so it means a lot to us to continue to have a good team year after year.”
