Man charged with hate crime for allegedly threatening to shoot two men DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Tom Wirsing have announced that Judge George Ford granted the state’s motion to deny pretrial release for a Lombard man charged with verbally Larry York abusing and threatening to shoot two Muslim men.

Larry York, 46, with a last known address in Lombard, appeared at First Appearance Court, where he was charged with two counts of a hate crime, a Class 4 felony.

On Oct. 17, at 8:30 p.m., one of the victims arrived at the Point West Apartment Complex to meet a friend. It is alleged that

while the man was seated in his car waiting for his friend, York approached the vehicle and asked the victim what he was doing there and then began swearing at the man and telling him he did not belong in this country and to leave.

It is alleged York punched the man’s car window and then walked back to the lobby of the building. It is further alleged that when York entered the lobby, the second victim was exiting the elevator at which time York began swearing at him and threatened to beat him. It is alleged that a short time later, as one of the men was seated on a bench outside the building, York again approached the men and twice lifted the opposite end of the bench off the ground causing the man seated on the bench to fall

to the ground.

It is alleged that York told the men that he called four of his friends to come over and shoot the two men. It is further alleged that during the incident, York threatened the men saying “f**k you f***ing Muslim motherf*****s. This is America.

Get the f*** out of here. I’ll shoot you, motherf****s, get out of here.”

An investigation led by the Lombard Police Department led to York who was taken into custody the following day at a Lombard bar without incident.

“Hate crimes have no place in a civilized society,” Berlin said. “The allegations against Mr. York are extremely disturbing and in DuPage County we have no tolerance whatsoever for such vitriolic actions,

as alleged in this case. I commend the Lombard Police Department for their quick identification and apprehension of the defendant in this case.”

“The Village of Lombard is a proudly diverse community,” Wirsing said. “The alleged behaviors and threat of violence made by Larry York are absolutely unacceptable and have no place within our community. Residents should remain vigilant against hate crimes and similar conduct and we would encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses a hate incident to report it to the Lombard Police Department.”

York’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 2, for arraignment in front of Judge Michael Reidy.

Villa Park man released on electronic monitoring after being charged with stalking, property damage at Pritzker’s Chicago home STAFF REPORT

A 38-year-old man who was charged earlier this month for allegedly stalking Gov. JB Pritzker and throwing rocks at his Gold Coast home in Adam Dabash Chicago is from Villa Park.

Adam Dabash was taken into custody by police a few blocks from the governor’s home on Monday, Oct. 9, after he allegedly threw baseball-sized rocks at the windows of

Pritzker’s Chicago home in the 1400 block of N. Astor. Dabash reportedly caused nearly $8,000 in damage, according to Cook County prosecutors.

Dabash has been charged with two counts of felony stalking, felony criminal damage to property and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

Video surveillance showed Dabash reportedly walking outside Pritzker’s home at around 9:45 that morning. He allegedly stopped twice and threw rocks at the home’s windows. He then returned and allegedly threw another rock at the windows.

One of the rocks was reportedly recovered inside the home. All told, three windows were damaged, prosecutors said.

Both Pritzker and his wife, MK, were at home at the time of the alleged incident.

Prosecutors also said Dabash tossed notes over the fence of the governor’s home on two separate occasions in late August, and that his name was written on both notes.

Each note did not contain any threats, according to prosecutors.

Dabash appeared before Cook County Circuit Court Judge William

Fahy on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Prosecutors wanted Dabash detained, arguing that he posed a danger to the governor and was a safety threat.

However, Fahy ruled against detaining him, saying Dabash had no criminal record and had not threatened violence.

Dabash was released on electronic monitoring, and scheduled to appear again in court Oct. 16, but details from that court appearance were not available.

Pritzker, who in 2021 signed into law the Safe-T-Act that ended cash bail, was asked at a news conference

Oct. 10 if he thought Dabash should be held in custody. while awaiting trial. ““Should they be held in custody? They should if they meet the requirements,” he said. “But let’s say, criminal property damage is one thing. Stalking, which is something that it appears that this person may be charged with. Also, this is not the first time they’ve come by our home.

And so, I don’t know what the state’s attorney is going to do with regard to that. But I can say that, collectively, those could lead to somebody being held in jail and not let out.”

State officials recommend gas price increase for 4.1 million consumers Final decision on rate increases expected before the end of the year

Utility customers throughout Illinois will likely see higher natural gas bills beginning in January after staff at the state’s utility regulatory agency recommended rate increases for four gas companies.

Those recommendations— made by administrative judges at the Illinois Commerce Commission—next go to the appointed five-member commission itself.

Over the next two months, the ICC will weigh whether to approve rate hikes for the 4.1 million customers of Ameren Illinois, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. Estimates on the consumer cost of the rate increases, which go into effect in January, vary.

Nicor, which serves 2.2 million Illinoisans, estimates that their original request would increase customer bills by about $9.28 per month. Ameren customers’ bills are expected to increase by several dollars per month as well. Peoples Gas claims that, due to the falling price of natural gas, customer bills will remain at similar levels to last winter.

The proposed rate increases have drawn criticism from consumer and environmental advocates. Consumer advocacy groups, like Illinois PIRG, oppose the increases and have argued the utilities are spend-

ing money irresponsibly.

PIRG’s director, Abe Scarr, said that he expects the commission to modify the recommendations “to be more consumer conscious, more climate conscious.”

“The big question is what changes will the commissioners actually make,” Scarr said.

Scarr and other advocates have been watching the commissioners closely throughout the rate case process for hints as to how they might rule.

The commissioners are all relatively recent appointees of Gov. JB Pritzker, with three having joined the board in the spring.

One of the major concerns in the gas cases—and the infrastructure spending driving the rate increases—is the electrification of residential heating and cooking across the U.S. Advocates say this could lead to a future where companies create “stranded assets,” meaning infrastructure that is no longer used.

But the gas companies have defended their requested increases by pointing to the fact that much of the infrastructure spending is required for safety reasons and by federal law.

“The company’s cost of service is now increasing due to continued investments in our system infrastructure to meet new federal compliance-related regula-

tions and industry best practices that help ensure system-wide reliability,” Allison Gregoire, a Nicor Gas spokesperson, said in an email to Capitol News Illinois.

Higher prices, higher profits The ICC has several levels to control the price of gas utility bills, with one of the most significant being setting utilities’ “return on equity”—in other words, the profit that’s returned to shareholders.

This has been a major point of contention throughout the 11-month rate case process, with advocates, companies, the state’s attorney general, and the staff of the ICC all proposing different potential rates.

Ultimately, the administrative judges overseeing the cases sided with ICC staff on their recommended profit rates.

For Nicor and Ameren, they recommended a 9.89 percent return to shareholders.

For Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, which are owned by the same parent company, the administrative law judge recommended a 9.83 percent return.

While lower than the companies’ requested profit rates—all of which were above 10 percent—the recommended rates were higher than any proposed by consumer advocates.

The Citizens Utility Board, a nonprofit created by the General Assembly in the 1980s to advocate for consumers before the ICC, was part of a coalition of organizations that argued for a 9.5 percent profit rate for Peoples Gas and Ameren and 9.4 percent for Nicor.

“Too often, they (the ICC) side with utilities, especially when it comes to the profit rates for shareholders,” CUB director Sarah Moskowitz said in an interview.

Utilities also say a wider profit margin allows them to more easily attract investments and conduct business transactions.

“The requested rate of return will give us access to affordable project financing with lower debt costs, and those savings will be passed on to our customers,” Tucker Kennedy, Ameren’s director of communications, said in a statement.

ICC’s busy year Beyond the gas rate cases, the ICC is also considering two complex cases that will determine the price of electricity for Ameren Illinois and Commonwealth Edison, the two largest electric utilities in the state.

These cases involve multi-year rate plans as well as a grid planning process, both of which were outlined in the 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act.

These multi-year plans are expected to increase electricity rates for most Illinois utility customers over the next four years, with ComEd’s plan increasing rates by $200 per year by 2027 and Ameren’s increasing rates by $300 per year over that span.

The ICC commissioners will likely lower these increases somewhat by the time they vote on a final order in these cases later this year.

The commission is also considering permitting two controversial pipelines that are designed to transport carbon dioxide for eventual sequestration in underground geologic structures in central Illinois.

In addition to ideological and political fights surrounding the pipelines, there is also an ongoing legal question of what role states should play in regulating CO2 transport.

While the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Material Administration has the authority to determine safety, some states factor that into their regulatory structures.

This was one of the main concerns cited by South Dakota regulators when they quashed a permit application from Navigator CO2 for a pipeline that would have terminated in Illinois. Recently, Navigator withdrew its Illinois application from ICC consideration but noted it may reapply.

Pre-trial release denied for Bensenville man accused of murder

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick have announced that Judge George Ford granted the Kevin Krenc state’s motion to deny pre-trial release for a Bensenville man accused of shooting to death Victor Garcia, of Des Plaines.

Kevin Krenc, 31, appeared last week at First Appearance Court, and is charged with one count of first-degree murder.

On Oct. 14, deputies with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office responded to 4N539 Route 83 after receiving a 911 call regarding an intoxicated man possibly in need of assistance.

After making contact with the man, deputies learned of an alleged murder that had occurred earlier that day on Church Road in unincorporated Bensenville.

Following an investigation into the matter, it is alleged that Krenc, Garcia and several other individuals were at a party at Krenc’s residence on Church Road celebrating Krenc’s birthday.

It is alleged that during the party, tensions rose between several individuals at the party regarding allegations that, among other things, Garcia had stolen a pair of shoes from another person at the party and

that Garcia felt disrespected at these allegations.

It is further alleged that at some point in time, Krenc and several others were in the garage at the residence and that when Garcia entered the garage, Krenc pulled out a rifle he had hidden in the garage and shot Garcia five times, killing him. It is further alleged that after the murder, Krenc hid the weapon in an enclosed trailer parked on the driveway and then fled the scene.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office identified Krenc as a suspect in the murder and took him into custody on Oct. 17 from his residence without incident. When processing the scene, deputies from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office located a rifle in a vent in the basement of the residence.

“The allegation that Mr. Krenc shot and killed Victor Garcia over a pair of shoes and a feeling of being disrespected is simply appalling,” Berlin said. “In DuPage County, we do not stand for the type of gun violence alleged in this case and my office is prepared to prosecute Mr. Krenc to the fullest extent of the law.”

“I would like to thank our deputies and detectives for their hard work and dedication to solve this case,” Mendrick said.

Krenc’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 3, for arraignment in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.

The Village of Villa Park is once again offering a free leaf collection service for seven weeks of the year. The free leaf collection period began on Monday, Oct. 23, and will continue through Friday, Dec. 8.

During this period, residents may dispose of an unlimited number of yard waste paper bags of leaves without the need for waste disposal stickers.

However, leaves must be containerized in landscape paper bags or containers under 35 gallons.

The Villa Park Junior Women’s Club (VPJWC) will hold its annual Trick Or Trot 5K Run/Walk and Little Devil 1K Dash event this Saturday, Oct. 28.

The start line for both events is on the Illinois Prairie Path, near the Rugaard Gazebo. The gazebo is located near the intersection of Ardmore Avenue and Park Boulevard.

All participants are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.

The 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run/ walk will begin at 9 a.m. The 1-kilometer dash (for kids 12 and under) will start at 10 a.m.

An adventure with super glue

Hamas attack on Israel and killing of 6-year-old Muslim boy

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi On Oct. 14, the greater Chicago community, the state of Illinois, and our country were shocked and appalled by the alleged murder of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year-old Palestinian boy in Will County who was reportedly targeted for his family’s Muslim faith in an attack that also left his mother in serious condition.

This brutal act of Islamophobia and domestic terrorism has no place in our society. I urge lawenforcement authorities to prosecute this crime to the fullest extent of the law and all Americans to come together in rejecting hate in all its forms.

My family and I grieve his loss and are keeping his mother and their family in our prayers.

This tragedy comes at a difficult moment for so many here in the United States and around the world. Over two weeks ago, the

Hamas terrorist group launched a horrific attack against the people of Israel that killed more than 1,400, including dozens of Americans, while kidnapping nearly 200 people.

In the subsequent fighting, thousands more civilians have been killed or wounded.

I stand with President Biden in condemning the horrible terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas, calling for the safe return of all hostages, and reaffirming that the Palestinian people are not Hamas.

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience this noxious combination in the comfort of my own kitchen.

This was not of my doing. But you already knew that.

Late one night (when all the excitement happens at my house) my teenage son had an unfortunate encounter with ceramic bowl, which resulted in the right half of the bowl separating from the left.

Normally a broken bowl is no big deal at our house, but this happened to be a bowl that was hand-painted—by me. Since my son understood the gravity of his predicament, he decided to mend the break. Or at least try.

I was in bed. Sleeping. It’s something I tend to do at night. I do not even attempt to keep up with their late/wee hours anymore. I need sleep more than I need to be the perfect mom. Besides, perfect is as over-rated an unbroken, hand-painted bowl.

Sleep is not.

Since I wasn’t around to help with the repairs, he was left to his own accord. He grabbed the super glue and went to work right there on the granite. I’m not sure exactly what transpired, but I picture super bonding solution squirting everywhere. The result was a bigger mess than a broken bowl.

I expected this sort of stuff when they were little. When they were too young to know any better or be held accountable for their actions, like the time they spray-painted their toys green—in the bathroom sink.

But the years unfold, they grow up and you expect them to know things they do not yet know. Like you might not want to spill super glue on the countertop because they call it super glue for a reason.

My son was unaware of the super mess he created. When I got up the next morning, I was not. After wiping and washing and spraying and scrubbing with an assortment of kitchen cleaning products, the surface refused to shine. Being the supermom that I am, I quickly recognized the source of the problem.

As I contemplated the super stain I was sure of one thing. They’d broken something; I just didn’t know what it was yet.

I didn’t have much time to investigate. My son suffered from a guilty conscience and fessed up first thing after getting out of bed. He carried the bowl over to where I was searching the Internet using phrases like, “How to remove super glue” (acetone nail polish remover, by the way). He pointed out the crack. I told him it was no big deal. He breathed a sigh of relief.

Then I told him about the counter.

His head drooped and he breathed another sigh. This one contained no relief.

His remorse was enough for me. I stated my mantra, “It’s no big deal.”

And I meant it. If there’s one thing I’ve learned during my time on this planet it’s that people are more important than things. (Unless the thing is the last piece of cheesecake.)

I wasn’t upset. Not really. After raising three boys I’ve learned to take most things with a healthy dose of calm. Or maybe I’m just getting old.

Either way, I figured this would make for a fond family memory someday.

Besides, you know what they say: there’s no use crying over spilt super glue.

2023 note: This column was written in 2014 and nine years later I can honestly say that I have no recollection of my hand-painted bowl—broken or not, which only serves to prove my theory that people are definitely more important than things—even the last piece of cheesecake.

Lombard calling. I wanted to give a shout out to Glenbard East and one of their students. I drove by St. Timothy Lutheran Church. on Main Street and noticed the young lady mowing the big lawn. She looked familiar and she wore a sweatshirt that said Meyer 9. I went home and looked in the newspaper and sure enough, it was Hannah Meyer of the Glenbard East volleyball team. Then I attended the Glenn Westlake concert on Wednesday. It was a wonderful short concert and had a cookie social afterward.

And guess what? Hannah Meyer was there helping out. Thank you, Glenbard East for offering different ways to be involved through the school and community, and thank you Hannah Meyer and her parents too for probably coaxing her to being involved in her school and helping out in her community. I feel the youth of today need to take notice when something needs to be done and parents need to strongly encourage involvement, whether the child wants to do it or not. Anyway, thanks again, Glenbard East and the youth who are taking it up and being involved in our community. Bye. *** Hey, this is Lombard calling. I know we have an ordinance for overnight parking because I read it on the village’s website. That’s the only way you would know. But you wouldn’t know we have such an ordinance if you were to look at my block during the evening. We have cars parked on our street 27 days out of a 30-day month. So it would be nice to have some enforcement of this ordinance.

However, do you understand that she had less than 1 gram of cannabis oil? Granted, that is considered a controlled substance in Russia, but you want her stay imprisoned for that, and according to her, she didn’t mean to pack up in her suitcase going home? Talk about a lack of compassion. Also, she was diagnosed with a “chronic and debilitating medical condition,” and the substance was prescribed to her by a medical doctor, which was documented. It has come to my attention more than a few times that state legislatures are basically sitting on their hands, failing to address the issue of the sun-setting of the Invest in Kids scholarships program, that in the past has a history of being a boon and a positive step toward the quality education for mostly low-income children. If action is not taken to extend this program, it would be a terrible injustice to thousands of children who would benefit from this. This program does not take away funds from public schools. I urge you to address this issue to ensure the continuation of this worthy cause. I can see no reason not to do so, other than some non-descript political foundation. Can we say teachers unions?

more funding to sustain incoming immigrants. By the government statistics, in the almost three years that our president has been in office, we are now reaching almost 9 million additional people who are affecting our tax burden. We also need to consider: is there a threshold before we shut the border down? What is the threshold? How many million more? All we’re doing right now is providing a magnet. And if asylum means economic asylum, we might as well let in 50 million people or 100 million people. This is unsustainable. We will end up killing the golden goose here in our ability to help other people and function as a nation. The only thing the goose will be able to lay in the future, I hope and fear, that it will not be golden eggs, but brown eggs. *** The delusional/abstract President Biden we voted in is living in a fog.

He makes us Democrats look like fools. We can’t even carry on a decent conversation with our counterparts about politics or the economy.

We need someone like RFK Jr. or Joe Manchin for the next presidential election in 2024. Thank you. *** There’s been talk for decades about a two-state solution to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict. Just give the Palestinians their own state, we’ve been told, and everything would be solved. Anybody remember the Oslo Accords when Bill Clinton was president? The proposals included the establishment of a demilitarized Palestinian state on around 92 percent of the West Bank and 100 percent of the Gaza Strip, with some territorial compensation for the Palestinians from pre-1967 Israeli territory, and making east Jerusalem the capital.

Yasser Arafat rejected it. If Palestinians still want a two-state solution, then moderate Palestinians need to stand up to both Hamas and Hezbollah, take control and negotiate with Israel.

The annual Spooktacular pre-Halloween event took place in downtown Lombard on Sunday, Oct. 22, in partnership with the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Lombard Business Alliance. The event attracted many children and adults, including Nicole and Eddie Thomas and their son, Ryan (above left). According to Colleen Whittington (above right, center) from the business alliance, Spooktacular began in 2009 as a trick-or-treat event with

downtown businesses and by 2011, had expanded enough to close off part of St. Charles Road to vehicular traffic. She said the event was canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed last year. Whittington also noted that the number of vendors doubled from last year, to about 25, “thanks to our sponsors.”

Happy 96th birthday

York Township Supervisor John W. Valle surprised Trudy Petko with a birthday cake to celebrate her 96th birthday. She is a Lombard resident and has been a regular at the York Township Senior Nutrition Center for many years. After a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” led by Valle, the cake was cut and shared as dessert at Trudy’s request. Valle said, “We wish Trudy a happy and healthy birthday. She has been with us here at the Township for many years and we wanted to show her how much we care.”

Montini Catholic’s auditorium was alive with fall holiday themed music and song for its first concert of the school year at the high school’s Halloween themed fall concert on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Parents, faculty and friends were treated to a special evening of fall/ Halloween themed songs, including “October Twilight,” “The Spider” and “Nightmare Before Christmas Medley.” The evening began with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sung

Warriors finish regular season with a 49-12 victory Willowbrook will face Yorkville in this Friday’s Class 7A playoff game in Villa Park

The Willowbrook football team wrapped up its regular season with Friday’s 49-12 West Suburban Gold Conference win over Leyden in Villa Park.

The Warriors finished their regular season with five straight wins to post a record of 7-2. Willowbrook placed second in the West Suburban Gold Conference standings with a mark of 5-1. Downers Grove South won the conference title with a perfect 6-0 record against West Suburban Gold opponents.

Downers Grove South, Willowbrook and Addison Trail will represent the conference in the playoffs.

Addison Trail (6-3) joins the Warriors in the 32-team Class 7A level.

Downers Grove South (6-3) is one of the 32 teams competing in the Class 8A playoffs.

Willowbrook will open the IHSA Class 7A playoffs with this Friday’s home game against Yorkville (6-3).

The contest will begin at 7 p.m. in Villa Park. The winner will face either Auburn High School of Rockford or Rockton’s Hononegah High School in the second round.

The Warriors are seeded No. 15 in the Class 7A level. Yorkville is the No. 18 seed.

Willowbrook led Leyden (2-7 overall; 2-4 in the conference) 21-0 after one quarter and 35-6 at halftime. The Warriors scored two third-quarter touchdowns to take a 49-6 lead. The advantage of at least 40 points triggered a running clock for the rest of the game.

Senior quarterback Arthur Palicki scored Willowbrook’s first touchdown of the night on an 18-yard run.

Junior Brandon Lopez then made the extra-point kick to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead. Lopez would add six more extra-point kicks during the game.

Senior Carter Ferguson scored Willowbrook’s next two touchdowns of the game. Ferguson caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Palicki with about seven minutes left in the first quarter. Minutes later, Ferguson hauled in a 15-yard touchdown reception from Palicki.

Leyden scored a second-quarter touchdown to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 21-6. Palicki’s third touchdown pass of the game—a 14yard connection with junior K.J. Rhodes—helped the Warriors raise their lead to 28-6 with about three minutes left in the second quarter.

Palicki delivered his second touchdown run of the game in the final minute of the first half. His 1-yard run with 15.9 seconds left in the half helped the Warriors to their 35-6 halftime lead.

Palicki threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Rhodes with about

eight minutes left in the third quarter. Senior DaeVeon Madison of the Warriors added a 2-yard touchdown run with about four minutes to play in the third quarter.

Madison’s touchdown generated a running clock for the rest of the game.

Warriors beat Blazers to win the conference tournament Willowbrook earns a trip to this week’s state quarterfinals at Halas Hall

The Willowbrook flag football team won the championship of the West Suburban Gold-Plus Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Warriors defeated Addison Trail 20-6 in Saturday’s title contest in Villa Park.

With the win, Willowbrook earned a berth in this week’s state tournament at the Chicago Bears’ Halas Hall facility in Lake Forest. The Warriors will play a quarterfinal game at the state event this Saturday. The championship battle will take place this Sunday.

One year ago, during the Willowbrook program’s inaugural season, the Warriors won the state title at the Bears’ facility.

Willowbrook went 5-0 during its regular season in the West Suburban Gold-Plus Conference. The Warriors finished the regular season with a 32-0 win over Addison Trail on Oct. 7. Willowbrook and the Blazers

both entered that contest with conference records of 4-0.

The Warriors and Addison Trail both advanced to the conference tournament’s championship game with semifinal victories in Villa Park on Oct. 14. Willowbrook crushed Larkin 68-0 in the semifinal round.

The Warriors didn’t allow a single point in any of their first six victories of the season.

Addison Trail, however, ended that streak by scoring a touchdown on its opening drive of Saturday’s championship game. The Blazers scored their touchdown on a pass on a fourth-and-goal play from the Warriors’ 3-yard line.

Sophomore quarterback Marli Smrz scored Willowbrook’s first touchdown of the championship game on a running play.

Smrz then completed a one-point conversion pass to freshman Liz Pettinger to give the Warriors a 7-6 lead.

Moments later, Smrz intercepted an Addison Trail while playing on defense for the Warriors. She then finished an offensive drive with her second touchdown run of the game. Smrz completed another one-point conversion pass to Pettinger to extend the Warriors’ lead to 14-6.

Senior Emma Anderlik of Willowbrook intercepted an Addison Trail pass later in the first half. The Warriors then scored their third touchdown of the game on a run by Pettinger to raise the lead to 20-6 by halftime.

Neither team scored during the second half.

Smrz was shaken up in a collision during the opening half. She remained on the sideline for the rest of the game.

“It wasn’t easy,” said Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos after Saturday’s win over the Blazers. “I think we came out a bit nervous.”

Karos added that she wasn’t terribly upset that the team’s streak of holding its opponents scoreless came to an end.

“Frankly, I’m glad it happened,” Karos stated of the Warriors’ lengthy shutout streak.

“Now it’s out of our system. We’ve just got to be a bit more tough mentally.”

A complainant at a rental store in the 700 block of S. Route 83 reported at 8:05 a.m. that an unknown suspect shattered a window on the south side of the building. Suspects entered and removed several tools from the building.

A complainant in the 300 block of N. Illinois reported that an unknown suspect entered their unsecured home and removed multiple items.

Oct. 12 Kayla M. Bowen, 23, of Sumava Resorts, Ind., and Destiny J. Millender, 23, of Valparaiso, Ind., were charged with prostitution at a hotel in the 1-100 block of W. Roosevelt at 8:23 p.m.

A complainant at a store in the 300 block of N. Ardmore reported that suspects removed beer cans from the display shelves and left without paying.

Officers located the suspects and items were returned. The suspects were trespassed.

A complainant in the 300 block of S. Ardmore reported an unknown subject damaged plants on the south side of the building.

Oct. 10 Police said Omayra Torres, 54, of Villa Park, was arrested on an original complaint and warrant on the above date for an alleged incident that occurred July 6.

A complainant in the 1-100 block of N. Addison reported they located pieces of wood on their property with obscenities written on them.

A complainant at a restaurant in the 200 block of W. North reported that a suspect who they have an order of protection against was in the parking lot close to them. The suspect was gone upon an officer’s arrival.

A complainant in the 700 block of N. Addison reported that juvenile suspects were attempting to enter vehicles that are parked in the parking lot.

Oct. 9 A complainant in the 300 block of N. Ardmore reported that an unknown suspect damaged the driver’s side door of a vehicle that was parked in a parking lot.

Oct. 8 Daniel S. Murphy, 35, of Lombard, was charged with battery/making physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature and disorderly conduct/ breach of peace in the 400 block of S. Harvard at 7:11 p.m.

Oct. 5 A complainant in the 200 block of W. Vermont reported that a suspect battered them. The complainant did not want to press charges.

Oct. 4 A complainant in the 300 block of N. 2nd reported that a suspect threatened them.

Fraud, identity theft According to information provided by the Villa Park Police Department, police reported five incidents of residents being a victim of fraud or identity theft.

Musicians celebrate everything Halloween at Montini Catholic fall concert

Montini Catholic’s auditorium was alive with fall holiday themed music and song for its first concert of the school year at the high school’s Halloween themed fall concert on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Parents, faculty and friends were treated to a special evening of fall/Halloween themed songs including “October Twilight,” “The Spider” and “Nightmare Before Christmas Medley.”

The evening began with the “National Anthem,” sung by Montini’s Concert Choir and it was the Chamber Choir that enchanted its audience with the somber, but beautiful, “Autumn Leaves.”

Warriors’ girls team earns a sectional berth

Ojeda’s fourth-place individual finish leads Willowbrook to fourth-place honors at the Lyons Township Regional eight full teams.

Riverside-Brookfield (150 points) and Reavis (178 points) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

The top six teams advanced to this week’s Hinsdale Central Sectional.

Willowbrook finished seventh in the team standings of the regional’s boys competition. The boys event included eight full teams.

Sophomore Miteku Branch was the Warriors’ first finisher in Saturday’s boys race. He negotiated the 3.1-mile course in a 34th-place time of 17 minutes, 22.8 seconds.

Willowbrook juniors Adriano Quintero (17:43.76) and Jake Skibbie (17:53.7) finished 39th and 40th, respectively.

Branch, Quintero and Skibbie earned individual berths in this week’s Hinsdale Central Sectional.

Freshman Mike Garner (18:12.92) ran to a 43rdplace finish for the Warriors during Saturday’s regional. Junior Kasen Blain (18:14.85) turned in a 44th-place finish for Willowbrook, while junior Omar Arenas (18:24.35) landed in 47th place.

Senior Evan Weder (18:48.2; 50th) rounded out the Warriors’ regional squad.

Downers Grove North’s boys team won the regional title at Saturday’s event with its 21-point total. Riverside-Brookfield finished second with 57 points, while Lyons Township placed third with 72 points.

Hinsdale Central (87 points) finished fourth, while Morton (143 points) landed in fifth place.

Reavis (171 points) qualified for the sectional with its sixth-place showing at the regional.

Willowbrook posted a seventh-place regional total of 198 points. Argo (242 points) finished eighth.

Willowbrook’s girls and boys cross-country teams participated in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A regional at Lyons Township High School’s south campus in Western Springs.

The Warriors’ girls team advanced to this week’s Hinsdale Central Sectional at Katherine Legge Memorial Park. While Willowbrook’s boys squad did not earn a team berth in the sectional, three members of the team did secure individual berths in this week’s event.

Junior Amelie Ojeda led Willowbrook’s girls team with her fourth-place individual finish in Saturday’s regional. Ojeda completed the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) race in 19 minutes, 7.89 seconds.

She finished about 10 seconds behind the individual champion—Downers Grove North senior Sarah Paul (18:57.76).

Sophomore Mariangela Popoca (20:37.51) raced to a 22nd-place finish for the Warriors. Junior Malin Meeker (21:41.72) placed 30th for Willowbrook.

Sophomore Allyson Stefani (22:09.92) and junior Molly Brown (22:27.75) finished 36th and 38th, respectively, for the Warriors.

Juniors Rosemary Kling (23:01.08; 42nd) and Holly Harris (26:14.39; 55th) completed Willowbrook’s regional lineup.

Downers Grove North won the regional title with its 25-point total. Five Trojans earned top-10 finishes in the race. The team swept the top three individual places in the race.

Lyons Township finished second with 44 points, while Hinsdale Central claimed third with 63 points. Willowbrook tallied a 130-point total in its fourth-place finish at the regional, which included

Broncos earn an impressive win at St. Laurence Montini ends the regular season with a 6-3 record; Broncos head to the playoffs for the first time since 2019

The Montini Catholic football team concluded its 2023 regular season on a high note by defeating St. Laurence 24-17 on Friday night in Burbank.

The Broncos, who snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, finished the regular season with a 6-3 record. After winning its first five games, Montini suffered

losses to Providence Catholic, St. Viator and Brother Rice.

Montini, St. Laurence and Providence Catholic earned a share of the Chicago Catholic League White Division title. All three teams posted division records of 2-1 in the four-team division, which also includes Benet Academy. Providence Catholic (5-4) will play in the Class

5A playoffs. St. Laurence (6-3) will battle in the Class 4A post-season.

The Broncos will open the IHSA Class 3A playoffs with this Friday’s home game against Eureka (5-4). If Montini beats Eureka, it will meet Fairbury’s Prairie Central High School (5-4) or Chicago’s North Lawndale Charter School (8-1).

Montini is making its first post-season appearance since 2019.

“Anytime you can win a conference championship or a co-championship, it’s a great feat,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky.

“We accomplished a couple of major goals. We won a conference title and we qualified for the playoffs.

Now we’re putting our other goals into focus.”

Montini is the No. 6 seed in the 32-team Class 3A playoffs. Eureka is the No. 11 seed.

St. Laurence took an early 7-0 lead over the Broncos after scoring a touchdown on its opening drive of Friday’s game. Later in the first quarter, Montini senior Cole Stumbaugh delivered a great punt that pinned the Vikings near their own goal line. Montini’s defense forced a punt a few plays later. Junior J.C. Hayes of the Broncos blocked the punt. Junior Nick Irion scooped up the loose ball and returned it 12 yards to the Vikings’ 4-yard line.

Moments later, Montini senior Alex Marre crossed the goal line on a 4-yard touchdown run. Stumbaugh made the extra-point kick to even the score at 7-7.

Stumbaugh kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Broncos a 10-7 lead. St. Laurence kicked a field goal later in the quarter to tie the score.

Montini regained the lead when junior quarterback Gaetano Carbonara fired a 56-yard touchdown pass to junior Isaiah Mason in the second quarter. Stumbaugh’s extra-point kick gave the Broncos a

The Warriors beat Hinsdale Central 20-25, 25-14, 25-17 in a non-conference match in Villa Park on Oct. 16. Health department awarded over $2 million in federal grant funding to focus on prevention efforts The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) recently secured two significant federal grants totaling over $2 million to expand efforts to improve mental health, prevent substance use disorders, and prevent drownings.

The two grants have been awarded to DCHD through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Both awards are the result of a highly competitive process and support DCHD’s work to protect the health and promote the well-being of DuPage County’s nearly 1 million residents.

“We are honored to be a recipient of these two federal grants,” said Adam Forker, executive director, DuPage County Health Department. “Federal funds enhance our work with local partners to help us

keep DuPage County the healthiest county in Illinois.” SAMHSA awarded DCHD $375,000 a year in funding over a five-year period, totaling $1,875,000. This funding will help the DuPage County Prevention Leadership Team (PLT) working to prevent substance use and increase mental wellness among DuPage County Youth.

For the past 10 years, PLT was funded to focus on substance use prevention for youth, 18 years and younger in DuPage. This new funding will expand PLT’s work to now focus on both substance use and mental health for youth and adults throughout DuPage. Do your investments match your goals?

As you go through life, you’ll have various financial goals — and to achieve them, you’ll need to invest. But just recognizing the need to invest is not as useful as matching specific types of accounts or investments with specific goals. How can you make these connections?

Let’s look at some common goals and how they could possibly be met with appropriate accounts and investments: • Saving for a down payment on a house – When you’re saving for a down payment, you want a certain

amount of money available at a certain time — so, for this goal, you won’t want to take too much risk.

Consequently, you might consider investing in certificates of deposit (CDs), which will pay you regular interest payments and return your principal when the CDs mature.

CDs are issued in a range of maturities, from one month to 10 years.

Other vehicles you might consider are money market accounts or other cash equivalents.

• Saving for a child’s education – If you have children, and you’d like

to help them pay for some form of higher education, you may want to consider a 529 education savings plan. Any earnings growth in a 529 plan is federally tax free, provided the withdrawals are used for qualified education expenses, and you may also receive state tax benefits.

A 529 plan can be used for college, approved trade school programs, student loan repayments and some K-12 costs. And if the child you’ve named as a beneficiary chooses not to continue their education, and doesn’t need the money in a 529 plan, you can generally switch beneficiaries to another immediate family member.

• Saving for retirement – This is the one goal that will remain consistent throughout your working years

— after all, you could spend two or even three decades in retirement, so you’ll need to accumulate as many financial resources as you can to pay for those years. Fortunately, you likely have access to several good retirement-savings vehicles. If you work for a business, you might have a 401(k) plan, which offers you the chance to put away money on a tax-deferred basis. (If you have a Roth option in your 401(k), your withdrawals can be tax free, although, unlike a traditional 401(k), your contributions won’t lower your taxable income.) If you work for a public school or a nonprofit organization, you may be able to participate in a 403(b) plan, which is quite similar to a 401(k), and the same is true if you work for a state or local

government, where you might have a 457(b) plan. And even if you invest in any of these plans, you can probably also contribute to an IRA, which gives you another chance to invest on a tax-deferred basis (or tax-free basis, if you’re eligible for a Roth IRA).

Try to take full advantage of whatever retirement plans are available to you.

Here’s one final point to keep in mind: While some investments and accounts are appropriate for certain goals, they may not necessarily be suitable for your individual situation — so keep all your options in mind and take the steps that are right for you.

Pritzker launches self-funded nationwide abortion rights advocacy organization

Gov. JB Pritzker is self-funding the launch of a new political advocacy group aimed at fighting for abortion rights across the U.S.—an extension of sizable donations he’s been making in Democratic politics for several years.

The billionaire governor, whose rising national profile had garnered feverish speculation about a run for president in 2024, launched Think Big America on Oct. 18. TBA is a nonprofit issue advocacy group similar to one he set up four years ago to push for a graduated income tax in Illinois, which ultimately fell short at

the ballot box.

In a video announcement published Oct. 18, Pritzker said he believed a “far-right agenda” has already taken hold in many places in the U.S. “The end of reproductive rights.

They call their display “Evil on Everest.” Dan said their front yard display has been in place since the end of September, and their back yard display will be open to the public from 4-9 p.m. Friday through Oct. 31. Rams crush Bartlett to finish the regular season with an 8-1 record

Glenbard East claims a share of the Upstate Eight Conference title; Rams open the playoffs with this Friday’s home game against Harlem High School

The Glenbard East football team closed out its regular season with Friday night’s 41-7 Upstate Eight Conference win over Bartlett in Lombard.

The Rams, who led Bartlett 41-0 at halftime, finished the regular season with an 8-1 record. They won a share of the conference title, along with Glenbard South and South Elgin. All three teams posted records of 8-1 in the 10-team conference.

Glenbard East will open the IHSA Class 7A post-season with this Friday’s home game (starting at 7 p.m.) against Machesney Park’s Harlem High School (6-3). The Huskies play in the Northern Illinois 10 Conference. They are one of five teams in their conference to qualify for the post-season.

The Upstate Eight Conference is also sending five teams to the 2023 playoffs. In addition to Glenbard East, Glenbard South and South Elgin, East Aurora (6-3) and West Chicago (5-4) advanced to the post-season.

The Rams are the No. 9 seed in the 32-team Class 7A playoffs, while Harlem is the No. 24 seed. If Glenbard East wins its first-round game, it will meet either Lincoln Park or Addison Trail in the second round.

The Rams scored five first-quarter touchdowns to take a 34-0 lead over Bartlett (4-5) through 12 minutes of play. Glenbard East added one touchdown in the second quarter to increase its lead to 41-0 by halftime.

The entire second half was played with a running clock. Bartlett scored its lone touchdown of the game in the third quarter.

Senior Aaron Dotson of the Rams recovered a Bartlett fumble at the Hawks’ 18-yard line about one minute into the contest. Moments later, Glenbard East senior Matt Larson delivered an 18-yard touchdown run. Senior Ryan Snell added the extra-point kick to give the Rams a 7-0 lead with 10:37 left in the first quarter.

Junior Amonte Cook of the Rams delivered an exciting 45-yard touchdown run with 5:46 to play in the first quarter. Cook ran to one side of the

field, near Bartlett’s sideline, before reversing course. He headed toward the Glenbard East sideline and eventually sailed into the end zone. The Hawks blocked the ensuing extra-point kick, leaving the Rams’ lead at 20-0.

The Glenbard East boys soccer team’s season ended with Friday’s 3-2 loss to York in the championship match of the IHSA Class 3A Schaumburg Regional.

The Rams and York were tied at 2-2 after 80 minutes of regulation.

The two teams remained tied at 2-2 after 20 minutes of overtime. The Dukes earned the victory after defeating Glenbard East in a penalty-kick shootout.

The Rams finished their season with an overall record of 7-6-3.

Glenbard East opened the post-season with a 2-0 victory over Schaumburg in a regional semifinal match on Oct. 18.

York is the No. 1 seed in the 18team West Chicago Sectional. With their win at the Schaumburg Regional, the Dukes advanced to this week’s

sectional semifinal match against Glenbard West.

Glenbard East was the West Chicago Sectional’s No. 9 seed.

The Rams scored one goal in each half of last week’s regional semifinal against Schaumburg on the Saxons’ home field. Seniors David Hernandez and Josh Maida scored one goal each for Glenbard East in the victory.

Senior Josue Roman and junior Reean Dialektakos provided one assist each for the Rams.

Junior goalkeeper Cooper Wooldridge made seven saves for Glenbard East in the team’s shutout win over Schaumburg. The Saxons were the sectional’s No. 7 seed.

After two 40-minute halves and two 10-minute overtime periods, Glenbard East and the Dukes settled the match in a penalty-kick shootout.

Two members of Glenbard East’s boys team—sophomore Mason Hephner and senior Ryan Van Dam—earned individual berths in this week’s Hinsdale Central Sectional with their performances at the regional. Hephner finished 17th in the 3-mile regional race, which he completed in 16 minutes, 4.2 seconds. Van Dam landed in 21st place at the regional with his finishing time of 16 minutes, 6 seconds.

Junior Leo Contreras (17:48.1) posted a 65th-place finish for Glenbard East, while senior Chris Hallerud (18:01.2) placed 69th in the race. Junior Emmett Cross (18:22.5; 74th), senior Garin Ohanion (18:22.9; 75th) and junior Miles DePhillips (18:29.1; 77th) rounded out the Rams’ regional lineup.

Neuqua Valley won the team title in the 12-team regional with its score of 56 points. Naperville Central placed second with 66 points.

The Rams posted a team total of 246 points in their ninth-place finish.

The regional’s top six teams advanced to this week’s sectional.

A pair of Broncos run to individual regional titles Gertsen wins the girls race in Westmont; Nolan Ferris delivers a first-place effort for Montini’s boys team

The Montini Catholic girls and boys cross-country teams competed in Saturday’s IHSA Class 1A Westmont Regional. The Broncos earned individual titles in both the girls and boys races. Montini’s girls and boys teams both ran to second-place finishes in the team standings.

The Broncos’ girls and boys teams both advanced to this week’s Class 1A Bishop McNamara Sectional at Kankakee Community College.

Sophomore Sydney Gertsen of the Broncos’ girls team ran to the individual title in Saturday’s race on the 3-mile course at Westmont High School. Montini junior Nolan Ferris sprinted to a first-place finish in the regional’s 3-mile boys race.

Gertsen completed the girls race in a winning time of 19 minutes, 15 seconds. She crossed the finish line 36 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Sophomore Ashlynn Lindt of the Broncos finished the race in a fourth-place time of 20:03. Junior Annalee DeFeo (22:19) added a 12th-place finish. Freshman Rosie Callaghan (23:33) and junior Naomy Gonzalez (23:46) placed 22nd and 24th, respectively, for the Broncos.

Freshman Maryfaith Considine (27:46; 48th) and junior Yeon Park (32:35; 57th) completed Montini’s regional lineup.

IC Catholic Prep won the regional’s team title with 43 points. Montini claimed second in the seven-team regional with its score of 54 points.

Ferris finished Saturday’s boys race in Westmont in a first-place time of 16 minutes, 53 seconds. He edged the runner-up by eight seconds.

Montini freshman Nino Pesola completed the regional race in a seventh-place time of 17 minutes, 57 seconds. Junior Conor Kaefer of the Broncos posted a ninth-place time of 18:06.

Three Montini freshman—Andrew Vreeland (18:34), Gavin Conway (18:48) and Adriel Garcia (18:57)— finished 12th, 15th and 17th, respectively. Senior Gabriel Blanco (19:24) contributed a 21st-place finish for the Broncos.

Elgin’s Harvest Christian Academy won the boys title at the 10-team regional in Westmont with its total of 31 points. Montini finished second with 44 points. Timothy Christian placed third with its total of 58 points.

Rams complete their regular season

Glenbard East’s girls volleyball team finished its regular season with a pair of matches last week. In their final home match of the season, the Rams suffered an Upstate Eight Conference loss to Bartlett on Oct. 17. The visiting Hawks defeated Glenbard East 25-22, 25-19. The girls cross-country team from St. John’s Lutheran School in Lombard earned a runner-up finish at Saturday’s National Lutheran Cross-Country Championships at Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone.”

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”

Those who own certain guns and other items now prohibited under the state’s assault weapons ban still need to register them with the Illinois State Police. But ISP says it plans to hold additional public hearings about that process and may refine the rules before they become permanent next year.

“We are happy to address all questions and comments submitted to ISP and will be doing so in the weeks to come,” ISP said in a statement last week.

Illinois lawmakers passed an as-

sault weapons ban during a special lame duck session in January. It came in response to a mass shooting at an Independence Day parade last summer in Highland Park.

The law prohibits the purchase, sale, possession or manufacture of a long list of firearms defined as “assault weapons” as well as large-capacity magazines and certain kinds of ammunition.

But the law also says that people who already owned those items before it took effect are allowed to keep them, as long as they register them with the state police before Jan. 1, 2024.

Last month, ISP published temporary rules spelling out how people were to register those items and it began taking online registrations starting Oct. 1.

As of Oct. 18, according to ISP, 1,050 individuals had completed disclosures through that system.

Those included disclosures of 2,060 firearms, 1,125 accessories and 17 ammunition supplies.

But many more people have filed questions and comments, saying the rules are vague and hard to understand and that it’s not clear which items are covered by the rules, and which are not.

DuPage. The funds have provided nearly 4 million meals over the years and the event brings families and a community together on a day for giving thanks. The organization recently expanded to include other events throughout the year. In June 2017, it announced the new Café Liberty culinary skills training program.
