A new chapter begins at Villa Park’s larger and renovated library Ribbon-cutting takes place 50 years to the date after dedication at current site on Ardmore Avenue

The Villa Park Public Library celebrated its grand re-opening with Saturday morning’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. Saturday’s event took place exactly 50 years after the dedication of the library at its current site at 305 S. Ardmore Ave. The dedication of the then-new library took place on Oct. 19, 1969. In April 2017, Villa Park voters approved a $10.6 million bond referendum to expand and renovate the library. Asbestos abatement began in late 2017. The expansion project, which added about 9,500 additional square feet to the building, began in 2018 and continued into this year. The demolition and renovation work on the library’s existing space took place this year. Pat Hubbard, the president of the Villa Park Library Board, delivered brief remarks during Saturday’s ceremony at the updated library, which occupies about 32,000 square feet. “It truly is a time to celebrate, and thank everyone who came together to make our new and renovated library a reality,” said Hubbard. Villa Park Village President Albert Bulthuis also spoke briefly during the ceremony. Bulthuis thanked several people, including the village’s voters, library staff and the Friends of the Villa Park Library. “This building is really gorgeous,” Bulthuis said. “Thank you all for all your hard work.” Library director Sandra Hill noted after the well-attended ribbon cutting ceremony that patrons have been accommodating during the construction and renovation process. “Our patrons have been so patient and understanding,” said Hill, who noted that the library was closed for

a few weeks this spring, but closures were kept to a minimum. “We did our best to stay open.” Describing some of the features of the upgraded library, Hill mentioned the abundant natural light on the second floor of the addition, as

well as added space for quiet reading. “We tried to put the staff on the perimeter of the building and leave all of this space for the public,” said Hill, who added that she and the rest of the library staff are looking for-

ward to spending less time on the building project and more time on serving patrons. “We’re settling in and focusing on services,” said Hill, who praised the work of the library staff during the addition and renovation.

“A number of our patrons have said our staff has been outstanding during the whole process,” stated Hill. “We’ve got some hard-working and loyal staff who really care about the patrons. The patrons see that and they appreciate it.”

The Villa Park Public Library held a grand re-opening ceremony on Saturday morning to mark the completion of the recent addition and renovation project. In April of 2017, voters approved a $10.6 million bond referendum to expand and renovate the library, which is located at 305 S. Ardmore Ave. The dedication of the library at its current site took place 50 years to the date prior to Saturday’s ceremony. Library board members joined Villa Park Village Board members, library staff members and several residents at Saturday’s ceremony, which featured a ribbon-cutting.
