Pre-trial release denied for man accused of firing weapon at unincorporated Willowbrook Juneteenth celebration DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion to deny pre-trial release for an Aurora man accused Anthony of firing a handgun at a Mothershed Juneteenth celebration in unincorporated Willowbrook last summer.

Anthony Mothershed, 19, appeared at First Appearance Court, where he was charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm—direction of another person (Class 1 felony) and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (Class 4 felony).

On June 18, at approximately 12:24 a.m., deputies with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office were alerted to gunshots fired at a Juneteenth celebration in a strip mall parking lot near Kingery Highway and Honeysuckle Rose Lane in unincorporated Willowbrook. Upon their arrival, deputies learned that 31-year-old Reginald Meadows of Willowbrook had been shot and killed and multiple individuals had been shot.

Following an investigation into the matter led by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, it is alleged that while in attendance at the Juneteenth celebration, Mothershed was with a group of individuals standing outside the Legacy Beauty Supply when he began shooting a Kahr Arms CW45 .45 caliber pistol in the direction of others at the

It is alleged that after the shooting, Mothershed fled from the scene. Deputies with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office took Mothershed into custody without incident on Oct. 4.

“The violent conduct alleged against Mr. Mothershed is outrageous and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “A gathering of hundreds of people is no place for illegal guns, and my office stands ready to file the appropriate charges supported by evidence against anyone accused of behavior such as alleged in this case. The investigation into what turned a peaceful celebration into a deadly shooting continues to be extremely tedious and time-consuming, and I commend Sheriff Mendrick and the detectives involved

who have invested countless hours to determine the truth about what actually happened that night.”

“I would like to commend the detectives of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for tirelessly working on this case since its inception,” Mendrick stated. “These investigators have put in thousands of hours of work to reach this outcome. We will vigorously continue our investigation to hold anyone involved in this incident accountable.”

An investigation into the matter continues.

Mothershed’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 23, for arraignment in front of Judge Brian Telander.

The Villa Park Police Department urges motorists to commit to sober driving this Halloween, when children and their families will be walking through neighborhoods after dark, in search of candy and spooky fun. If you will be out scaring up a good time, remember to plan ahead for a sober ride home.

“Heading out to a Halloween party? Before the fun starts, decide how you’ll get home,” said Villa Park Police Sgt. James Cihak. “Just one drink or hit can impact your ability to drive safely and make responsible decisions. Planning ahead will help keep you—and others—safe.”

Never get behind the wheel while impaired. It is illegal in Illinois to drive while impaired by alcohol, marijuana or any other impairing substance. DUIs are not restricted to alcohol-related offenses. If you drive high, you’ll get a DUI. The Villa Park Police Department will conduct increased traffic patrols during the upcoming Halloween season. The increased patrols are part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High, Get a DUI” enforcement campaigns.

The department urges everyone to follow these simple tips to help keep our roads safe this Halloween: • Plan a safe way to get home before you attend a party.

• Designate a sober driver, take public transportation, use your favorite ride-sharing app, or call a sober friend or family member to get home.

• Walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as driving while impaired. Designate a sober friend to accompany you home.

• If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as it is safe to do so.

• If you see an impaired person about to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High, Get a DUI” campaigns are made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

Ronald Neal, 20, appeared at his First Appearance Court hearing, charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding, a Class 4 felony.

On Aug. 10 at approximately 12:16 a.m., an officer with the Westmont Police Department allegedly observed a Honda Element pull out of a parking lot near 59th Street without its headlights on. It is alleged that

the officer shined his spotlight on the Honda, later determined to be driven

by Neal, to alert him that his headlights were not on. It is alleged that Neal ignored the officer’s signal and continued driving without his headlights on, at which time the officer made a U-turn and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

It is further alleged that instead of pulling over, Neal continued to drive, running a stop sign, hitting a mailbox

and a streetlight before ultimately crashing into an occupied home. No injuries were reported from the occupants of the home. Following an investigation into the crash, Judge Angelo Kapas issued a $150,000 arrest warrant on Aug. 15. Neal was taken into custody without incident last week.

Neal’s next court appearance is scheduled Oct. 30 for arraignment in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

VFW Post 2801 Auxiliary accepting entries for its youth scholarship competitions Deadline to submit entries in the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy contests is Oct. 31

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 Auxiliary is participating in the upcoming 2023-24 Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy youth scholarship competitions.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. The Voice of Democracy contest is for high school students.

Students who enter the Patriot’s Pen contest must complete an essay by writing an answer (300 to 400 words) to the 2023-24 theme: “How Are You Inspired by America?”

In the Voice of Democracy au-

dio-essay competition, contestants will write an essay responding to the 202324 theme: “What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?”

In addition to writing their response to that question, students who take part the Voice of Democracy contest will make an audio recording (3 to 5 minutes) of their essay.

Students who participate in the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy contests can advance to four different levels of competition—VFW Post, VFW District, VFW State and VFW National. Students can earn scholar-

ship funds by advancing to each level.

The first-place national award for the Patriot’s Pen contest is $5,000. The grand prize in the Voice of Democracy competition is a $35,000 scholarship.

Villa Park Fire Department invites the community to its open house this Saturday Free event at Fire Station 81 will include a live fire demonstration

The Villa Park Fire Department will hold its annual open house this Saturday, Oct. 14.

The free event will run from noon until 3 p.m. at Fire Station 81, located at 1440 S. Ardmore Ave. Parking will

be available at the U.S. Post Office lot across the street from the fire station.

Saturday’s open house, which is taking place at the end of Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 8-14), will give children an opportunity to see and touch

fire equipment and vehicles.

A live fire demonstration will take place outside of the station at 2:30 p.m.

Warriors win the title at Elk Grove Invitational Five decisive victories at the invite raise Willowbrook’s record to 26-1

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team ran its overall season record to 26-1 by reeling off seven straight wins last week. After beating Hinsdale South and Riverside-Brookfield during the week, the Warriors won five matches and claimed the first-place plaque at Saturday’s sixteam invitational at Elk Grove High School.

The Warriors didn’t lose a single game during last week’s action.

Willowbrook opened the week with a 25-13, 25-18 West Suburban Gold Conference win at Hinsdale South on Oct. 3. One day later, the Warriors earned a 25-17, 25-21 victory at Riverside-Brookfield.

In its first match at Saturday’s Elk Grove Invitational, Willowbrook beat Streamwood 25-5, 25-10. The Warriors then defeated Hoffman Estates 25-15, 25-14.

Willowbrook completed the round-robin invite with wins over Elk Grove (25-16, 25-11), West Chicago (25-12, 25-13) and Resurrection (25-12, 25-10).

Junior Hannah Kenny handed out 13 assists for the Warriors in last week’s conference victory over Hinsdale South. Willowbrook junior Anna Marinier supplied seven kills in the win over the Hornets.

Hannah Kenny bashed nine kills in the Warriors’ Oct. 4 win at Riverside-Brookfield. Willowbrook senior Calli Kenny provided 10 assists and eight digs against the Bulldogs. Senior Elisa Chivilo had nine digs and seven assists. Marinier and senior

Eliza Ramey connected for six and four kills, respectively.

Calli Kenny bashed 30 kills during Saturday’s five matches at Elk Grove. Hannah Kenny piled up 62 assists during the invite.

Willowbrook’s schedule this week includes a conference match against Proviso East, as well as an appearance at Lincoln-Way Central’s Autumn Knights Tournament. The event at Lincoln-Way Central, which began earlier this week, ends this Saturday.

Crafters’ holiday and bake sale to be held Oct. 21 at St. Alexander St. Alexander’s CCW is holding its annual crafters’ holiday sale on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Alexander Catholic Church parish hall, located at 230 S. Cornell, Villa Park.

Universal truths, number two

A few weeks ago, I submitted a list of universal truths that I think we can all recognize and maybe even agree with.

In today’s culture of division, isn’t it a pleasant and nice truth to simply agree? I concur and couldn’t agree more.

When writing that first list of truths, I found I had too much material for just one column. So here’s a second.

Who knows, perhaps there will be more. I hope so, because I think finding things we can agree on, universally, is a positive - now perhaps more than ever before.

Maybe that is universal truth number one: Finding common ground is a good thing.

Truth number 75: Colors—as in hues of the rainbow and beyond. You don’t give them much of a second thought until you are decorating. It is at that time that gray becomes at least 12 different distinctive shades with names like slate, dark slate, light slate, medium slate, sliver of slate, silver slate and beyond slate. The decision as to which to pick for the walls of your kitchen is hardly black and white.

Number 12: Weeds don’t exist.

They are a category made up by humans, based on our desire for grass-filled yards and flower-filled, vegetable-filled gardens. Dandelions, creeping Charlie and even poison ivy were created for a reason and they have adapted to their environments to be so successful they are often deemed weeds.

Despite their weedy reputation, they are useful, if you see them as such.

Dandelion flowers attract pollinators, like bees. The flowers of poison ivy serve as food for birds. All three have homeopathic uses. Both dandelions and creeping Charlie are rich in vitamin C. Bottom line, like all plants, weeds serve Mother Nature, who doesn’t like her soil to sit empty. Instead, she fills in the blank spots with growth we humans have decided to label as weeds.

Number 43: Cheap wine can taste just as good as an expensive bottle. It all depends on the company you keep.

Good friends and family beat a top shelf cabernet any day.

Number five: Time alone can be just as valuable as time together.

It depends on the person and the relationship.

Number 1001: Sometimes an invention creates a product. What came first, wall to wall carpet or the vacuum cleaner? The answer might surprise you. The vacuum cleaner came on the scene in the 1920s, a decade or so later, the idea of wall-towall carpet came into being.

Number 997: Leaf blowers were invented for a reason, but I haven’t figured it out yet. I mean. If you want to get rid of leaves, don’t you have to do something more than just move them to another destination? How about a leaf vacuum—something that would suck them up and put them in a bag? Now there’s an invention worth inventing (if it hasn’t been already).

Number 772: Babies are born cute—for a reason. Puppies, kittens, hedgehogs, bunnies, piglets even all have certain characteristics that humans, at least, see as cute. Large eyes, a large head in relation to their bodies, chubby cheeks, a small nose and mouth all serve to trigger the cuteness factor. Cute makes us want to nurture—to complete those middle of the night feedings and diaper changes with an attitude of positivity, despite sleep deprivation.

Number one through one million: At the end of it all, all that matters is love. Who you’ve loved, how you’ve loved and how universally you’ve loved. All of it.

Go out and do that.

Letter to the editor

Letter writer’s views were clear, but hard facts missing Last week’s paper (Oct. 5 issue, Opinion) had a Letter to the Editor from Marilyn Fawell in which she criticized an article in the prior week’s paper about the new Illinois law restricting the use of cash bail.

Claiming the law is “a political decision designed to appease leftists,” she launched her attack also on a political basis. Her political views were clear, but hard facts were missing.

A more accurate picture of cashless bail can be had if one looks at the data currently available.

Fawell stated that, “Eliminating bail could promote even more crime.”

There’s no clear evidence linking bail reforms to a rise in violent crimes. Increase in crime has occurred in cities across the country, not just those with bail reform measures. A report from the Major Cities Chiefs Association showed

that out of the 66 largest police jurisdictions, 63 saw an increase in at least one category of violent crimes in 2020. The vast majority of these cities have not passed reforms eliminating bail.

Some states and jurisdictions have passed varying types of bail reform without a corresponding increase in crime: Washington, D.C. removed cash bail in most cases in 1992. New Mexico largely eliminated it in 2016. New Jersey largely removed cash bail in 2017 and Alaska largely ended its cash bail system in 2018.

There is still no conclusive evidence on the success or failure of no-cash bail. In a November 2020 report the Prison Policy Initiative, a criminal justice reform think tank, reviewed 13 jurisdictions that have instituted pretrial reforms—including Washington, D.C., New Jersey and Kentucky—and found that, “All

but one of these jurisdictions saw decreases or negligible increases in crime after implementing reforms.”

An October 2019 report from the University of New Mexico indicated that after the state’s bail reforms were implemented, a majority of individuals released pretrial did not commit other crimes.

However, two studies from the University of Utah and Loyola University Chicago came to opposite conclusions on whether the bail reform in Cook County led to an increase in crime in the county. The verdict is not yet in on the success or failure of cashless bail.

Crime in this country is a major issue which stirs people to strong opinions seeking solutions to the problem. Is it too much to ask that our decisions be based on facts and not politics?

Thank you Village of Lombard and the Lombard Park District for the senior fair last week. I got some good information and some nice free “swag,” although I would rather see less of the for-profit companies and businesses, even though they are about seniors; or maybe “targeting” them. Health care, senior services in and around the township and county, for certain, but I was put off by “pitches” some representatives tried to lay on me as I walked around. I think we seniors are pretty savvy, and while I am not saying any of these businesses are the least bit shady (I am sure the village does a good job of vetting them first), there are some seniors who can get sucked in by a deal or offer. Just my opinion. And thanks for having the vaccine available, too. *** We always talk about speeding down the streets, but here is a situation I want to address: speeding down the aisle in parking lots. St. Pius X Church in Lombard held its annual Fall Fest on Sunday, Sept. 24. About 500 people attended the event. An outdoor polka Mass was held at 10 a.m. featuring Chicago’s Good Times Band. After Mass, a pig roast was held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with pork, bratwurst, German potato salad, sauerkraut, applesauce, dessert and a non-alcoholic beverage. There also were raffles with cash prizes of $3,000 (first place), $1,000 (second) and two $500 prizes (for third and fourth). The parish also held a community trivia night on Saturday, Sept. 23.

GardenWorks Project’s Harvest Against Hunger returns to College of DuPage The GardenWorks Project (GWP) will host its sixth annual fundraising event, Harvest Against Hunger, on Saturday Oct. 14 from 5-8 p.m. at the College of DuPage Street Scene, located at the Miller Homeland Security Education Center in Glen Ellyn.

The goal of the event is to raise awareness and funding to help alleviate food insecurity within the western suburbs.

Harvest Against Hunger celebrates and supports GWP’s work towards a more sustainable, equitable, and food secure future. This creative collaboration with College of DuPage’s Culinary, Hospitality, Horticulture, and Music departments will feature small plates showcasing seasonal produce from local farms, specialty cocktails, live music, interactive activities, and a parting gift made by culinary students.

The event will also debut a custom, garden-themed beer crafted by Skeleton Key Brewery of Woodridge.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael McLean have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion to Terrance Griggs deny pre-trial release for a Chicago man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car.

Terrance Griggs, 24, appeared in First Appearance Court, where he was charged with two counts of aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle (Class 1 felony), three counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses.

On Oct. 2, at approximately 12:25 p.m., after receiving information regarding a 2017 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport that was reported stolen out of Chicago on May 26, the Berkeley Police Department observed the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop at

I-290 and York Road in Elmhurst.

It is alleged that instead of pulling over, the Lexus, later determined to be driven by Griggs, pulled away at a high rate of speed. Officers initiated a pursuit of Griggs that allegedly reached speeds in excess of 88 mph in a 30 mph-zone along southbound York Road at Lake Street in Elmhurst, at which point the Elmhurst Police Department became involved.

It is alleged that during the pursuit, Griggs struck an Elmhurst fire engine, causing approximately $7,000$10,000 in damage, as well as a 2020 Volkswagen Atlas. It is further alleged that the Lexus came to a stop behind a business in the 500 block of N. Michigan Street in Elmhurst, at which time Griggs exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Griggs was taken into custody approximately 15 minutes later in the 500 block of Willow as he attempted to get into an Uber.

“Cases of motorists fleeing from the police continue to endanger our streets,” Berlin said. “It is alleged

that in this most recent case, Mr. Griggs drove in excess of 88 mph on a 30 mph-road, struck a fire engine and another vehicle before abandoning the stolen vehicle he was driving and fled on foot. This phenomenon of ignoring the police and putting innocent motorists in harm’s way must stop before someone gets killed. I thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their work in apprehending the defendant in this case as well as the Berkeley Police Department for their assistance.”

“The frequent occurrence of reckless drivers using stolen vehicles to flee from police will not be tolerated in Elmhurst,” McLean said. “The Elmhurst Police Department utilized police canines, public safety drones, and mutual aid officers to apprehend Mr. Griggs. We will continue to use all of our resources to apprehend these dangerous offenders and protect our community.”

Griggs’ next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 17, for status in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell.

Florida man charged with leading police on high-speed chase

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

Montini Catholic congratulates Kazma Scholarship recipients Montini Catholic High School congratulates five Kazma Scholarship award recipients from its Class of 2027.

Each year, the Kazma Family Foundation, in conjunction with the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), presents awards to

eighth-graders actively attending a Catholic parish in the Diocese of Joliet and who are interested in attending a local Catholic High School.

Montini Catholic Kazma Foundation Scholarship recipients honored this year are:

Class of 2027 Isabella Baldwin (Hillside/ MacArthur Middle School graduate); Jasmine Bell Brunke (Lombard/ St. Pius X Parish School graduate); Rosemarie Callagan (Villa Park/ St. Pius X Parish School graduate); Owen Ferris (Wheaton/St. Pius X

The Kazma Family Foundation proudly supports Catholic education by providing scholarships to the seven Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Joliet. The Class of 2027 represents the 20th class of high school students that the foundation supports and mentors through their generosity.

The Kazma Family Foundation was established in 1997 by Gerald and Margaret Kazma. At that time, their daughter, Leigh-Anne Kazma, was named president and sole employee. The main mission of the foundation is to provide financial assistance to students and their families seeking a Catholic education.

She serves on several boards including the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), Chicago’s Big Shoulders Fund and numerous elementary and secondary schools. She has dedicated her entire career to personally engaging with students who receive financial aid from the foundation. She serves as a mentor for

her scholarship recipients, reviewing their progress and enjoying lunch and conversation with them at their high schools.

They began providing college scholarships to students at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in the Archdiocese of Chicago and branched out to provide scholarships to students throughout the Chicagoland area, including the Diocese of Joliet.

In recent years, the Kazma family has established scholarships at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Ava Maria University in Florida, St. Joan of Arc school in Florida, Universidad de Don Bosco in El Salvador, and has helped fund school construction in Honduras.)

In order to be eligible for a Kazma Scholarship, a student must demonstrate a sense of respect for others, be a good Catholic role model in their community, and receive no less than a “C” letter grade in any of their courses. Student applicants are also asked to submit a 250-word essay on what it means to be a Catholic student.

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

Conroy proposes balanced budget for DuPage County for FY2024

Rams beat the Raiders Glenbard East’s boys soccer team moved to 5-5-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the Upstate Eight Conference with Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Glenbard South in Lombard. Senior Josue Roman (No. 9 - top right) scored the Rams’ first goal of the match with about seven minutes remaining in the first half. Maida scored one goal against the Bison. Senior Jonny Weltin, junior Cooper Wooldridge and junior Josh Roimicher supplied one assist each for the Rams.

Glenbard East completed its regular season earlier this week with a conference home match against Bartlett. The Rams will open the IHSA Class 3A post-season with a regional semifinal match against Schaumburg at the Schaumburg Regional on Oct. 18. The Rams are the No. 9 seed in the West Chicago Sectional. Schaumburg is the sectional’s No. 7 seed.

DuPage County Board Chair Deborah Conroy presented a balanced budget for the County Board’s consideration at its Sept. 26 meeting.

“It is my pleasure to present a balanced, fiscally responsible spending plan to the Board for its consideration,” said Conroy. “I believe my proposal delivers important help to our residents who need it most, while making critical infrastructure investments now to take the pressure off future budgets. Careful planning at this time will set us up for success in Fiscal Year 2025 and beyond.”

The total proposed budget for DuPage County is $611.7 million, with a general fund of $241.7 million. The General Fund is the county’s chief operating fund, covering most personnel and program operations. The proposed budget includes a $70.5 million property tax levy, which captures new construction in the County being added to the property tax rolls.

The DuPage County property tax rate remains flat, comprising just 2 percent of the average DuPage County homeowner’s property tax bill.

Due to careful financial planning, DuPage County is projected to finish the 2023 Fiscal Year with a surplus of $13.7 million. Conroy laid out a plan to utilize those funds to eliminate future budgetary burdens, including: • $3 million dedicated to updating and replacing aging County campus infrastructure • $2.5 million for affordable housing projects in DuPage County

• $800,000 for Stormwater management projects • $500,000 to design and build sidewalks and improve street lighting in the Willowbrook Corners community Conroy also proposed utilizing $1.5 million in funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to address food insecurity and assist food pantries in DuPage County.

During her budget address, Conroy proposed a $250,000 allocation for The DuPage Council on Strengthening the System for Mental Health and Substance Use Care. The newly established Council replaces the DuPage County HOPE Taskforce.

“This bold new initiative will integrate our vision for mental health diagnosis and treatment plans with our efforts to reduce substance use disorder in DuPage County,” Conroy said. “Because the struggles are so often intertwined, it makes sense to embrace a new mission.” Conroy will lead the Council with the assistance of DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Adam Forker.

The DuPage County Board will now consider Conroy’s proposed budget and will approve the county budget at its Nov. 28 meeting. The 2024 Fiscal Year begins on Dec. 1.

Lombard-based AgeGuide receives prestigious Aging Achievement Award from USAging AgeGuide has announced that its AgeGuide Learning Center received a 2023 Aging Achievement Award from USAging, one of the highest honors presented by USAging to its members.

The Lombard-based AgeGuide Learning Center—an educational resource for Aging Network professionals and the community—provides courses on Dementia Friendly, Medicare and special trainings designed to educate participants on ways to better support people on their aging journey.

This effort was among 50 local aging programs to receive honors during USAging’s 48th Annual Conference and Tradeshow, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The 2023 USAging Aging Innovations & Achievement Awards, supported by Caregiving.com and Cumulus, recognizes USAging’s Area Agency on Aging and Title VI Native American Aging Program members that have found new and innovative ways to support older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers as they live in their homes and communities.

“The Aging Innovations & Achievement Awards are a timely reminder of the evolving role USAging members play in the planning, development, coordination and delivery of aging and other home and community-based services in nearly every community in the United States,” said USAg-

The DuPage County Community Services Department, as administrator of the Energy Assistance Program in DuPage County, has announced that funds are available to assist income-eligible households with their natural gas, propane and/or electric bills and furnace assistance for inoperable heating systems.

The program is now taking applications for seniors, the disabled and families with children under the age of six years. On Wednesday, Nov. 1, households that are disconnected from their utilities, have a disconnection notice or have less than 25 percent in their propane tank can start applying for assistance.

All other income eligible households can start applying Dec. 1. The application end date is now changing to Aug. 15, 2024 instead of May 31. Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis through Aug. 15, 2024. Households that receive a one-time benefit may return during this period for a Reconnection Assistance or Furnace Assistance benefit(s).

Households must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level to receive a benefit from LIHEAP. The 30-day income guidelines for LIHEAP are based on Federal Poverty Guidelines, State Median Income and the number of persons living in the household.

The income guidelines are as follows: 1-$2,430, 2-$3,287, 3-$4,143, 4-5,000. Go to dupagecounty.gov/ liheap or liheapillinois.com to know income limits for households with five members and more.

Rams clinch playoff berth with a 49-7 win over Fenton Rams meet undefeated Glenbard South this Friday in Lombard

The Glenbard East football team improved its 2023 record to 6-1 by routing Fenton 49-7 in an Upstate Eight Conference game on Oct. 5.

The Thursday-night contest was played at Triton College in River Grove. Fenton’s home stadium is under renovation. The Bison are playing their home games at Triton College this season.

The Rams locked up an IHSA playoff berth by securing their sixth win of the season.

Glenbard East will face undefeated Glenbard South (7-0) in this Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference showdown in Lombard. If the Rams defeat the Raiders, there will likely be a threeway tie atop the conference standings between Glenbard East, Glenbard South and South Elgin.

The Rams will finish their regular season with a conference home game against Bartlett on Oct. 20.

Broncos suffer their second straight loss St. Viator spoils Montini’s homecoming game; a late touchdown propels Lions to a 21-14 win

The Montini Catholic football team lost its homecoming game on Friday night, dropping a 21-14 decision to St. Viator in Lombard.

The Broncos, who opened their season with five consecutive wins, fell to 5-2 with Friday’s loss. St. Viator improved to 4-3.

Montini trailed the Lions 14-7 in the middle of the fourth quarter. The Broncos drove for a touchdown and made the extra-point kick to even the score at 14-14 with about four minutes to play. St. Viator then marched down the field and scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown with about one minute left in the game.

“We certainly didn’t execute well,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky after Friday’s loss. “We didn’t play well enough to come out with a win.”

Senior Alex Marre of the Broncos scored the first touchdown of Friday’s game on a 3-yard run late in the first quarter. Senior Cole Stumbaugh made the extra-point kick to give Montini a 7-0 lead.

Junior Sean Hubeny of the Broncos intercepted a pass early in the first quarter to end a St. Viator scoring threat. On their opening drive of the game, the Lions advanced the ball to Montini’s 6-yard line. Hubeny then picked off a pass in the back of the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos began their first offensive series of the night at their own 20-yard line.

That drive ended with Marre’s 3-yard touchdown run.

St. Viator evened the score at 7-7 by halftime. The Lions scored on a 14-yard touchdown run with less than four minutes to play in the second quarter.

They added the extra-point kick to tie the score at 7-7.

St. Viator took its first lead of the night when it scored on an 8-yard run with about nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. The extra-point kick gave the Lions a 14-7 lead.

Marre returned the ensuing kickoff about 25 yards, to Montini’s 45yard line. The Broncos then drove 55 yards for a touchdown. Marre completed the drive with a 5-yard run into the end zone. Stumbaugh made the extra-point kick to tie the score at 14-14 with about four minutes to play.

Marre gained 66 rushing yards on 14 carries during Friday’s game.

He also made four receptions for 20 yards.

St. Viator responded with an 80yard touchdown drive that included pass completions of 22 and 19 yards.

St. Viator finished the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run with 1:01 left on the clock.

St. Viator’s quarterback is junior Cooper Kmet—the younger brother of Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet.

Montini’s final drive of the night ended near midfield in the game’s closing seconds. The Broncos couldn’t execute a clean snap on a fourth-and-four play and fumbled the ball. The Lions recovered the loose ball near the Broncos’ 45-yard line.

Even if Montini had recovered the fumble, it would have turned the ball over on downs.

The Broncos will face Brother Rice (3-4) this Friday in Chicago.

Montini will complete its regular season with an Oct. 20 game at St. Laurence (now 6-1) in Burbank.

“We’ve got to keep getting better,” said Bukovsky, who noted that the Broncos will face two formidable opponents in the final two weeks of the regular season. “We just need more consistency.”

Montini junior quarterback Gaetano Carbonara threw 22 passes during Friday’s game. He completed 13 passes for 132 yards. Carbonara threw a pair of interceptions. Junior receiver Santino Florio made three receptions for 57 yards for the Broncos. Montini senior George Asay had three receptions for 35 yards.

Senior Donte Hudson provided Glenbard East’s fifth touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run with about nine minutes left in the second quarter.

Larson broke a 21-yard touchdown run with about four minutes left in the second quarter. A little more than one minute later, Hudson added a 40-yard touchdown run. Snell’s extra-point kick raised the Rams’ lead to 49-0.

Fenton scored its only touchdown of the night in the second half.

“It was a really important win for us,” said Montini coach Erik Vogt, whose team will play in the upcoming IHSA Class 3A Lemont Sectional. St. Laurence is that sectional’s No. 3 seed. The Broncos are the sectional’s No. 7 seed.

“It shows we can be competitive in our sectional,” added Vogt while discussing the win over the Vikings.

“We had a lot of different people step up in the match.”

After winning the second game to even the match, the Broncos closed in on their victory in the third game, building a 24-18 lead. St. Laurence then won five straight points to cut the Broncos’ lead to 24-23. The match ended with the Vikings failing to put a serve in play. That misfire gave Montini the point to clinch the victory.

Warriors jump to 5-2 with a win over the Huskies Palicki runs for three TDs and throws two TD passes

The Willowbrook football team raised its overall season record to 5-2 with Friday’s 35-14 victory over Oak Park and River Forest High School.

The Warriors and Huskies were tied at 14-14 after one quarter of Friday’s West Suburban Conference crossover game in Villa Park. Willowbrook, a member of the conference’s Gold level, held a 21-14 halftime lead over the Huskies, who play in the conference’s Silver level.

Oak Park and River Forest dropped to 1-6 with Friday’s loss to Willowbrook.

“They [the Huskies] moved the ball pretty well early in the game,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth after Friday’s win. “We made some adjustments. We played better and were more physical as the game went on.”

The Huskies have a losing record, but they play an extremely tough schedule. The West Suburban Conference’s Silver level features a few standout teams, including Glenbard West, York, Lyons Township and Downers Grove North. Additionally, Oak Park and River Forest opened its season with non-conference losses to Fenwick and Lake Park. All six of the Huskies’ 2023 losses have come against teams with winning records.

The Warriors scored a touchdown late in the third quarter to extend their lead to 28-14. Willowbrook added one more touchdown with about eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors will continue their

season with this Friday’s West Suburban Gold contest at Morton (1-6).

Willowbrook will finish the regular season with a conference home game against Leyden on Oct. 20.

Willowbrook needs to win at least one of its final two regular-season games to guarantee a berth in this year’s IHSA playoffs.

The Warriors scored the first touchdown of Friday’s game on a 53-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Arthur Palicki to junior K.J. Rhodes in the middle of the first quarter. Rhodes caught the pass near the Huskies’ 30-yard line and raced down the sideline into the end zone.

Rhodes made eight receptions for 180 yards during Friday’s game.

Oak Park and River Forest blocked the extra-point kick after Rhodes’ touchdown reception, leaving the Warriors’ lead at 6-0.

The Huskies delivered a long return on the ensuing kickoff. They started their offensive series at Willowbrook’s 25-yard line. A few plays later, the Huskies delivered a 1-yard touchdown run. They made the extra-point kick to take a 7-6 lead with about five minutes left in the first quarter.

The Warriors responded with a 72-yard scoring drive that included a 45-yard pass from Palicki to senior Carter Ferguson. The long reception

Ahern and Coppersmith compete at Class 3A golf sectional Glenbard East senior Peter Ahern and Willowbrook junior Austin Coppersmith competed in last week’s IHSA Class 3A boys golf sectional at Whitetail Ridge Golf Club in Yorkville.

Ahern shot an 18-hole score of 81 on the par-71 course at the Oct. 2 sectional. Coppersmith fired an 84. Neither player advanced to the IHSA Class 3A state meet, which took place on Friday and Saturday in Bloomington.

Ahern and Coppersmith both earned individual berths in the sectional with their strong play at the West Chicago Regional at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club on Sept. 27.

Broncos close out their season at a regional Montini’s boys golf team finished its season by hosting an IHSA Class 2A regional at Village Links of Glen Ellyn on Sept. 27. The Broncos fin-

ished eighth in the team standings of the nine-team event. Montini senior Anjay Dhir shot his team’s best score at the regional, firing an 18-hole score of 87 on the par-72 course.

Two Broncos play at IHSA Class 1A sectional Two members of Montini Catholic’s girls golf team—juniors Annika Bartell and Lily Spanos—played as individuals in last week’s IHSA Class 1A sectional at Lake Carroll Golf Course in Lanark. Bartell shot an 18hole score of 92 at the Oct. 2 sectional, while Spanos carded a 106. Neither Bronco advanced to the IHSA Class 1A state meet, which was contested on Friday and Saturday in Decatur.

Bartell and Spanos secured individual berths in the sectional with their scores at a Class 1A regional in Frankfort on Sept. 28.

The Glenbard East girls volleyball team earned a pair of Upstate Eight Conference wins last week.

The Rams beat Elgin 25-6, 25-14 in Lombard on Oct. 3. Two days later, Glenbard East defeated Fenton 2521, 25-22 in Bensenville.

The Rams moved to 17-10 overall and 6-1 in conference play with last week’s victories.

Senior Hannah Meyer provided nine assists for Glenbard East in last week’s win over Elgin. Senior Lauren Bradley made eight digs for the Rams in their win over the Maroons, while senior Stephany Sulari delivered four kills.

Meyer supplied 15 assists in Glenbard East’s triumph at Fenton on Oct. 5. Freshman Belle McDermott pounded eight kills for the Rams, while Sulari bashed six kills. Junior Grace Johnson made six digs and added two kills and two aces. Bradley made five digs, while senior Gabby Walton contributed two kills.

Glenbard East’s schedule this week includes a conference match against Glenbard South, as well as the Rams’ 24-team Autumnfest event, which takes place this Friday and Saturday.

Oak Park and River Forest recovered a Willowbrook fumble in the second quarter to begin a drive at the Warriors’ 26-yard line. The drive ended with the Huskies missing a 36yard field goal.

Willowbrook’s next drive ended with a punt, but the Warriors found the end zone on their following drive. Palicki’s 7-yard touchdown run with two minutes left in the first half broke the 14-14 tie. Junior Brandon Lopez added the extra point kick to give the Warriors a 21-14 lead.

The Huskies drove the ball inside Willowbrook’s 20-yard line in the middle of the third quarter before turning the ball over on downs.

The Warriors padded their lead with a touchdown drive that ended with Palicki’s third touchdown run of the night—a 3-yard burst with 1:54 left in the third quarter. Lopez made the extra-point kick to push Willowbrook’s lead to 28-14.

Palicki and junior Martin Anfinson connected on a 48-yard touchdown pass with 8:06 left in the fourth quarter. Anfinson caught the pass in the middle of the field, near the Huskies’ 25-yard line, and raced into the end zone.

About 20 seconds after he made the touchdown reception, Anfinson intercepted a long Oak Park and River Forest pass.

Anfinson made another interception earlier in the game, when he pulled a pass out of the air in the closing seconds of the first half.
