Villa Park police arrest 2 impaired drivers during holiday traffic enforcement campaign

The Villa Park Police Department partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation and law enforcement across the state for the 2019 holiday “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign from Dec. 16 through Jan. 2.

Law enforcement showed zero tolerance for impaired driving, arresting two suspects.

Villa Park Police also took the following enforcement actions: three drivers arrested for license violations, one seatbelt citation, 13 speeding citations, three distracted driving citations, eight insurance citations, and 13 other moving violation citations.

The Villa Park Police Department ramped up its usual enforcement efforts during the holiday season, adding extra emphasis was placed on late-night hours, when statistics show most unbuckled and impaired driving fatalities occur.

“We can’t stress this enough: Impaired driving is deadly, illegal behavior, and it puts the driver, passengers and other road users at risk,” said Sgt. James Cihak. “The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign helps our law enforcement officers address this problem head on. Because of this special enforcement effort, our roads were safer for the holidays.”

The Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

St. Charles bridge weight limit restriction lifted

As of Jan. 2, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has closed the special inspection of the St. Charles Road Bridge, officially removing the need for the 15-ton weight limit restriction.

IDOT placed a weight restriction placed on the bridge in 2014. The project to repair the bridge began in July of 2019 and was completed last month. The bridge fully opened to traffic in late December.

According to the Village of Villa Park, the long-term detour routing on Pace Route 313 ended on Sunday, Jan. 5, and buses resumed regular service through Villa Park. Pace Route 313 will operate westbound and eastbound through St. Charles Road, Villa Avenue, Washington Street and Westmore-Meyers Road. New minimum wage rates in effect for 2020 Illinoisans rang in the New Year with a new, higher minimum wage, and the Department of Labor is encouraging employees to watch their paychecks to ensure that time worked in 2020 is paid at the new rate.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the new minimum wage law last February providing a path to a $15 minimum wage by 2025. Minimum wage earners received an increase of $1 to $9.25 an hour on Jan. 1, which will be followed by an increase to $10 an hour on July 1.

The minimum wage will then increase an additional $1 an hour each Jan. 1 until it reaches $15 an hour in 2025.

“While we expect compliance by all employers regarding the new minimum wage, it is important that workers earning minimum wage are

aware that the $1 increase should be reflected in their pay checks for any time they work after the first of the year,” said Michael Kleinik, director of the Illinois Department of Labor.

The last time Illinois increased its minimum wage was a decade ago in 2010 when it was raised to $8.25.

Since that time, Cook County has put in place a $12 per hour minimum wage and Chicago’s minimum wage is now $13 an hour.

More than 1.4 million adult hourly workers in Illinois currently make less than $15 per hour, according to the Illinois Economic Policy Institute at the University of Illinois.

The new law maintains provisions for employers to count gratuities to offset wages for workers such as food servers who regularly earn tips. Tipped employees may be paid

60 percent of the hourly minimum wage. These workers must still earn the minimum wage after receiving tips.

Workers who are under 18 years old and work fewer than 650 hours in a year earn a minimum wage of $8 per hour beginning Jan. 1, up from the old youth minimum wage of $7.75.

The youth minimum wage rate will gradually rise to $13 an hour by Jan. 1, 2025.

Much loved great-grandfather of Mikayla, Olivia, AJ, and Shelby Moreno. Fond brother, godfather, uncle, and friend to many. Ruben “Papa” was a proud Navy veteran, serving during World War II and stationed in Japan in 1945. Growing up in his large family, Ruben learned the value of hard work -- an attribute that became a cornerstone of his character.

Some of his fondest memories of his youth in Chicago include time on the ball field at Fuller Park on 47th Street and celebrating with family and neighborhood friends at Berger’s afterwards.

When he returned from serving his country, a friend introduced Ruben to Anne Marie Robles. He would later explain that he fell in love with her at first sight.

Married at 21, Ruben began his career at John F. Cuneo publishing as a bookbinder and later machine operator. Throughout his 40+ years there he made countless friends and

earned the nickname “El Profesor.”

Ruben’s education extended beyond his formal schooling, encompassing his interests in history, language, culture, and music.

His passion for music developed early and was fueled by the pleasure he found in bringing people together. A self-taught guitarist, his strings served as Ruben’s voice. Together, he and Anne told many stories and shared heart-felt emotions with family and friends through song. Upon Anne’s passing, that voice was silenced for 12 years, until, Christmas 2018; when once again, family inspired him to speak, through his granddaughter’s new guitar.

A man who took great pride in his family, Ruben wasn’t afraid to share his feelings. Last month, while coming to terms with declining health and adapting to a new environment, he made sure to tell each person at the table how proud he was of their efforts and achievements in life.

He encouraged everyone to reach beyond themselves spiritually, specifically recommending attending church, of any kind, to get a sense of something bigger than oneself. That

Thanksgiving moment wasn’t just special for the family, but inspired an employee of the facility to respectfully interrupt to tell Ruben what a special man he was and what a wonderful family he had created.

If the measure of a man is how he is remembered by those with whom he lived, thoughts of Ruben will be summoned often and by many. Whether in the sweet sounds of a guitar, a kind word of encouragement, or the soft pat of a hand, he will remain with all who loved him. Like the smile on his face when opening a cerveza fria on a warm day, thoughts of him will refresh the soul. In Ruben’s final days he was under the care of Clarendale of Addison and Heartland Hospice.

The family would like to thank them for going above and beyond in their care.

Illinois sees nation’s worst population decline of the decade Population loss driven by nearly 853,000 residents leaving Illinois since 2010

Illinois closes the decade experiencing the worst population decline of any state in the nation with a total loss of 168,700 residents. According to data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau, Illinois shrank by 51,250 residents from July 2018 to July 2019, bringing the state to six consecutive years of population decline.

The drop in state population over the decade was driven primarily by nearly 853,000 residents moving, on net, from Illinois to other states.

New analysis from the Illinois Policy Institute reveals that the state shrank by 1.3 percent, second in the nation behind West Virginia for loss as a share of population.

Meanwhile, researchers found if the state had kept pace with national population trends, instead of shrinking, Illinois would have 1.14 million additional residents and $78 billion more in economic activity.

U.S. Census data reveal the following highlights: In 2019, Illinois lost 105,000 residents to other states. That means one resident moved away every five minutes.

Only two states, California and New York, lost more people to other states over the year.

Illinois saw the worst population loss of any state over the decade, in raw terms. The state’s population declined by 168,700 people from 2010-2019, which is more than the population of Naperville, Illinois’ third-largest city.

None of the five fastest-growing states of the decade – Utah, Texas, Colorado, Nevada and Florida – have progressive income tax rate structures. Meanwhile, four of the five slowest-growing states of the decade – West Virginia, Illinois, Connecticut, Vermont and Mississippi – have progressive income tax rate structures. Illinois voters will be asked if they want to scrap a constitutionally mandated flat income tax structure on the Nov. 3, 2020, ballot.

If the state had simply grown at the same rate as the national average since 2007, Illinois’ population would be 1.14 million residents, or nine percent, larger than it is today.

This population growth would bring $78 billion in additional economic activity to the state, equivalent to the entire state economy of Delaware.

Orphe Divounguy, chief economist for the nonpartisan Illinois Policy Institute, offered the following statement: “For the past decade,

people have questioned their ability to plant or maintain roots in Illinois.

This uncertainty has manifested itself in year after year of laggard economic performance and population loss leading to Illinois’ worst decade on record.

“A shrinking state means those who stay are left picking up the tab for government spending. If Illinois’ population growth had simply kept pace with the national average, its economy would have been significantly larger. In 2019, that larger economy could have generated as much as $3.45 billion in additional state tax revenues – more than Gov. J.B. Pritzker hopes to generate with a progressive income tax hike.

Compounded, it might have been enough to avoid many of the state’s recent tax hikes, which have likely spurred more people to leave.

“In order to reverse this trend of population loss during the coming decade, Illinois lawmakers need to look at policies that attract and retain residents. Pro-growth solutions that will encourage private investment and give businesses and residents a reason to stay include reining in the cost of government, managing budget instability and protecting against corruption.”

K-B Farms Inc. to donate iconic mansion to Boone County Historical Society Fire calls The Boone County Historical Society (BCHS) and Boone County Museum of History (BCMH) announce K-B Farms, Inc.’s donation of the 113-year-old “Funderburg House” mansion, along with a $1 million gift for long-term maintenance of the property. Over the coming months, The Funderburg House will undergo renovations and updates to eventually become a multipurpose historic house museum, rental facility, and community gathering space.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our museum, as well as our community,” says BCMH Executive Director Anna Pivoras. “We are so thankful for this generous gift from K-B Farms and the Funderburg family, and are looking forward to a bright future for the historic residence.”

The 1906, 8,000 square foot Craftsman-style mansion was built

by Belvidere native Katherine Rhinehart, daughter of Civil War General Allen C. Fuller. In the late 1930s, the property was purchased

by Hugh K. and Alice Funderburg, owners of the Keene-Belvidere Canning Company, now known as K-B

Farms. The property has been under their ownership ever since, and was transferred to the Historical Society in December.

The donation of the iconic Belvidere home at 605 N. State St., along with the generous monetary donation, will be the largest single donation in Boone County Historical Society’s 83-year history.

Rob Funderburg, Chairman of K-B Farms says, “The board of K-B Farms is excited by the opportunity to convert our grandparent’s historic home from a private residence into a public asset. Since the time the house was built, it has been enjoyed by two families and now it will be enjoyed by many other families in the future.

Through the efforts of many, an iconic Belvidere property will become a community asset and destination.

Boone County and Belvidere are so very fortunate to have received this part of our community’s history to care for and utilize. Assisting the Funderburg family, K-B Farms and the Boone County Historical Museum with this unique donation has been an honor and a blessing,” says John Wolf, BCMH trustee.

A dedication ceremony for The Funderburg House will be held early in 2020.

Voters have until noon March 12, 2020 to submit an application to vote by mail.

Early voting is also available at

the County Clerk’s Office beginning Feb. 6, 2020 through March 16, 2020. The only difference between early voting and vote by mail is that you would have to vote in person for early voting.

Judges of Election are permitted to deliver a ballot to any voter who cannot get into the polling place on Election Day if an application has been received in the County Clerk’s office prior to Election Day. These judges may deliver the ballot to the voter at the point at which he or she is unable to continue toward the Polling Place as long as this point is within 50 feet of the Polling Place entrance. Assistance is also available in the Polling Place. A touch screen voting machine will also be available that is specifically designed to assist voters with disabilities to cast their vote in the County Clerk’s Office or the Polling Place.

These wise words were written by Belvidere’s well-known poet, Ethel Veva King. Ethel, who preferred to be called Veva, was born January 7, 1888 to parents Frank and Anna King. Father Frank King was a wealthy farm owner and operated the Frank King Hardware store on S. State Street. He was so prominent in Belvidere circles that Belvidere named a street after him, the present day King Street running south from W. Lincoln Ave. to a bit beyond Perry St. As we have learned from previous Rad Women of Belvidere, the founding

A summary of the new Cannabis Regulations

The Boone County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Boone County Sheriff and the Belvidere Police Department want to educate residents about the new Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act effective Jan. 1, 2020.

• For Illinois Residents age 21 and older, an individual may lawfully possess the following amounts of cannabis and cannabis products from an authorized Illinois cannabis dispensary: - up to 30 grams of cannabis leaf/flower, - up to 500 mg of THCinfused products; and - up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.

• No person under the age of 21 may possess cannabis in any form.

• It is a crime to possess cannabis in any form and deliver (give, provide, sell) it to another person.

• Legally purchased cannabis cannot be used in a “public place” which is defined as “where a person can reasonably expect to be observed by others”. A public place may include private property. For example, an individual cannot use cannabis on their front porch if they can be seen by others. A person cannot use cannabis in restaurants, bars, or parks.

• A person can only transport cannabis in their vehicle in a sealed, odor-proof, child resistant container.

• A person cannot use cannabis in a vehicle.

• Individuals cannot drive a vehicle under the influence of cannabis.

• Illinois residents can only grow cannabis plants if they are over 21 and have a medical cannabis card. A person who meets both those criteria can only have five plants and the plants must be kept out of public view.

If a person is in violation of the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, they will be arrested and prosecuted.

This is only a summary of the new law. To review the law in its entirety, please review 410 ILCS 705/1-1 et al.

Veva was brought up in a world of books, politics, and news with family discussions on the issues of the day. Veva eagerly absorbed everything and achieved high marks in high school, earning valedictorian of her 1905 graduating class. Proud father Frank gifted her the 80-acre family farm in Flora as a graduation present and the family attorney added the gift of a Jersey cow. Despite her new wealth, Veva went on to Northwestern University in Evanston where she majored in English and Latin and began her writing career in earnest, publishing articles and poetry in The Daily Northwestern college newspaper.

Veva continued to specialize in poetry after graduating from Northwestern and appears to have published three poetry volumes. er married, choosing to live with her mother in the family home at 722 S. State St. She kept busy with involvement in many local clubs including the Belvidere Women’s Club, the Kishwaukee chapter of the Delphian Society (an organization dedicated to women’s education), and the Asa Cottrell DAR chapter, where she served as Regent in 1922. She formed a Belvidere Red Cross knitting group in 1917, knitting hats, scarves, and gloves for soldiers serving in World War I. Veva was active in the Equal Suffragette Association of Belvidere and was good friends with fellow member Jessie Roberts. Veva was also good friends with Ida Public Library’s librarian Elizabeth Ballard and donated a Native American collection to the library in 1915, volunteering her services as lecturer and guide for the exhibit. For relaxation, Veva greatly enjoyed a good card game and regularly entertained the members of the Belvidere Young Ladies Bridge and Whist

Club including Katherine Rhinehart’s daughter Ida and Cora Terwilliger.

Interestingly, Veva was not the only poetess in the family. Older sister Cora Claire King Swain published a book of poetry in 1945 titled Rainbows.

Cora was a stage actress and moved to California, marrying silent film comic Mack Swain. Cora’s poems are longer but lighter than Vera’s poems, focusing on faith and hope rather than destiny and the future. Ida Public Library owns a copy of Veva’s Selected Poems, which can be read in the library and Cora’s Rainbows is available on Amazon. Sadly, Cora passed away in 1956 and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Great Mausoleum on the Grand Staircase landing due to her acting status. Ethel Veva King passed away in 1929 at the young age of 41 and is buried in Belvidere Cemetery. If you decide to visit, remember Veva’s credo: “There are no failures, no lives lived in vain. The happiness of life is in the doing and life lies in the quest.”

Scholarships and Internship Opportunities The Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau Foundation is offering $1,500 scholarships for graduating high school seniors and college students of Farm Bureau members wanting to pursue a degree in a field of agriculture. The applications are available at the Farm Bureau office or online. To qualify, the Farm Bureau membership must have been active for a year. The student must be pursuing an agricultural related degree (e.g. plant science, animal science, agricultural mechanics, agricultural business, environmental services, food sciences, natural resources and ag teachers). Students may receive the scholarship up to a

maximum of four years. Applications are due Feb. 1.

Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau is also accepting applications for our Summer Internship program. ing, or hold the line on spending? I never have. Pension reform is always off-limits for Democrats because, God forbid, Democrats would not get the support of the teachers unions or the public sector unions if they dare mess with their sacred pot of gold.

And this is a city supposedly with tough gun laws? As the saying goes, when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. *** I heard so much on the news about the place in Addison that was selling marijuana on New Year’s day that curiosity got the best of me, I had to take a drive over there to see it first-hand. What does that say about all the people coming out of the shadows to purchase cannabis legally? I highly doubt these are new users, as many feared would happen. We still will have rising income taxes and higher license plate fees even if cannabis taxes help bail us out. Legalization results in lines, long waits The staff of the Independent took turns driving by EarthMed in Addison at different times of the day on Wednesday, Jan. 1, just to see how

Cast announced for ‘Speakeasy or Die Hard 2’ Local area actors to appear in GreenMan Theatre Murder Mystery

Many talented local actors are set to appear in GreenMan Theatre’s upcoming dinner theatre production of “Speakeasy or Die Hard 2.” The show runs five performances over two weekends at Angelo’s Ristorante in Elmhurst at 247 N. York Road.

The production opens Friday, Feb. 21 with additional shows Feb. 22, 28, 29 and March 1. Performances

Under the new law, Althoff said, medical dispensaries, which were the first to receive licenses for recreational sales, are required to keep a 30-day supply of marijuana products for their medical customers, leaving only a limited amount of inventory available for recreational customers.

She said supply shortages are expected to continue until April or May, when cultivation centers that have been licensed to grow recreational marijuana reap their first crop.

Meanwhile, state officials remain busy implementing other parts of the bill. On Tuesday, Dec. 31, Pritzker issued 11,017 pardons that will lead to the expungement of records for people with low-level marijuana convictions. Eventually, Pritzker’s office said, more than 700,000 criminal records will be expunged under the new law.

Thursday, Jan. 2, marked the deadline for people to submit applications for the next wave of dispensary licenses. As many as 75 new licenses will be issued May 1, with priority being given to “social equity” applicants—people with previous marijuana convictions, their families and people from areas of the state with high crime or child poverty rates.

A share of the revenue the state receives from recreational marijuana sales is earmarked for the new “Restore, Reinvest, and Renew Program” to fund community projects in neighborhoods that, in Hutchinson’s words, “have been hardest hit by the war on drugs.”

Other revenue is earmarked for a Cannabis Business Development Fund that will provide grants and low-interest loans to social equity applicants to help pay part of the startup cost of launching a marijuana-related business.

Also returning to the stage will be Elmhurst resident Joe Schram, who plays Father Francis. He is supported at the church by Kate Troc of Lombard along with Heather Ristanovic as Sister Aggravata and Sister Ermentrude. The evening’s MC announcer will be Patrick Cramer.

Warm, dry December in Illinois concludes a cold, wet year

Temperatures in Illinois were well above average and precipitation was below normal in December, according to Illinois state climatologist Trent Ford at the University of Illinois’ Illinois State Water Survey. More than 100 daily maximum temperature records were broken by month’s end.

The preliminary statewide December average temperature was 35.2 degrees, about 5 degrees above the 1981-2010 normal and the 18th warmest on record. Average temperatures in December ranged from the low 30s in northern Illinois to the mid-40s in southern Illinois.

Temperatures during the first half of December were very close to average, followed by a brief period of well below average temperatures caused by cold air from the north.

On Dec. 20, the predominant wind direction changed to southwesterly,

bringing warm, dry air into the region. Temperatures between Dec. 20 and 29 ranged from 5 to 25 degrees above normal across the state.

All told, 104 daily high maximum temperature records and 27 daily high minimum temperature records were broken over this time period, including a few dozen records on Dec. 25.

This was the warmest Christmas day at 68 stations across the state.

The daily average temperature in Decatur in Macon County on Christmas was nearly 20 degrees above the 30year normal.

The station in Elgin in Kane County broke its previous Christmas day high maximum record by 10 degrees.

The highest temperature recorded in the state was 70 degrees on Dec. 26 in Wayne County and again on Dec. 29 in Pope County.

The lowest temperature was -4

degrees on Dec. 15 in Rock Island County.

December’s warm weather was an aberration in an otherwise colder than average 2019 in Illinois. Only three months this year—July, September, and December—exhibited a statewide average temperature above the 30-year normal.

December precipitation was below the long-term average for the entire state.

The statewide average total December precipitation was 2.03 inches, approximately 0.66 inches below normal.

Areas in far southern Illinois received 2 to 3 inches less than average in December, approximately 50 percent of normal December precipitation.

This was the 50th driest December on record in Illinois and marked the second straight month of below average statewide precipitation.

Preexisting moisture and reduced evaporative demand, typical for this

time of the year, have prevented impacts from the prolonged dry conditions. Despite two straight months of well below average precipitation, streamflow and soil moisture were both near normal across the state.

Snowfall totals ranged from less than a tenth of an inch in far southern Illinois to over 10 inches in south-central Illinois. A strong system came through in mid-December and brought several inches of snow to an area spanning the St. Louis Metro East to the Champaign-Urbana area.

The highest 24-hour snowfall total was 5.6 inches in Lovington in Moultrie County on Dec. 17, although Mascoutah in St. Clair County and Columbia in Monroe County both recorded 7.5 inches on Dec. 17.

The December snowfall glut in south-central Illinois turned into snowfall deficits of 8 to 10 inches in northern Illinois. This was only the 10th December with 1 inch or less of snowfall in Stockton in Jo Daviess

County.

Despite the small snowfall totals, the seasonal total snowfall was above average for most of the state between interstates 80 and 64. A broad area between Peoria and the St. Louis metro east received over 4 inches of above average snowfall, whereas the Chicagoland region has so far this season experienced a snowfall deficit of 4 to 6 inches.

Short-term 8-14-day outlooks from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center show strongly elevated odds of both above normal precipitation and above normal temperatures.

Thirty-day outlooks show elevated odds of wetter and warmer than normal conditions to persist throughout January in southern Illinois.

Outlooks for January through March and March through May continue to show elevated odds of above normal precipitation for the entire state.

Hinsdale Central gains revenge against Warriors Red Devils win rematch by 28 points

The Willowbrook boys basketball team fell to 5-9 overall after Saturday’s 67-39 non-conference loss at Hinsdale Central.

Eight days before Saturday’s game, the Warriors beat Hinsdale Central 49-47 in an overtime thriller at the Red Devils’ holiday tournament.

Senior Everett Stubblefield of the Warriors made a pair of buzzer-beating 3-point shots in that game. His 3-pointer at the end of regulation tied the game at 41-41. Stubblefield drained a shot from behind the halfcourt line at the end of the overtime period to give the Warriors the victory.

Willowbrook held a 12-10 lead after one quarter of Saturday’s rematch. The Red Devils stormed to a 23-14 lead in the second quarter. Sophomore Sean Paige made a 3-point shot at the end of the second quarter to cut Hinsdale Central’s lead to 23-17 by halftime.

The Red Devils dominated the third and fourth quarters. Their lead grew to 46-28 by the end of the third period. Hinsdale Central made three shots from 3-point range in the third quarter. The Red Devils connected on three more 3-pointers in the fourth

quarter.

“It was not one of our better nights,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins after the game. “We just couldn’t knock down enough shots to make a game out of it.”

Stubblefield, who made a pair of 3-point shots, scored a team-leading 17 points for Willowbrook. Paige, who connected on all five of his freethrow attempts, added 12 points. No other Warrior scored more than two points.

Willowbrook won one of four games at Hinsdale Central’s tournament, which ended on Dec. 28. The

Warriors beat Hinsdale Central and suffered narrow losses to St. Rita, Thornton-Fractional South and Lincoln-Way Central. Saturday’s game marked the Warriors’ first contest since the end of the tournament.

The Warriors are playing non-conference games against Sandburg, Proviso West and Mundelein this week.

Willowbrook will play its next West Suburban Gold Conference game on Jan. 14, when it takes on Hinsdale South in Villa Park. The Warriors will enter that contest with a conference record of 1-2.

Addison Trail girls basketball team records three wins during recent stretch

By Mike Miazga, CORRESPONDENT The Addison Trail girls basketball team packed six games into a recent holiday stretch and came out of it with three wins.

In addition to going 2-2 at the Lisle Christmas tournament, the Blazers scored a West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against Hinsdale South and dropped a tough one-point contest to Glenbard East in nonconference action.

Addison Trail stood at 10-8 overall and 4-2 in West Suburban Gold play through late last week.

“Glenbard East was a great game,” said Addison Trail coach Cory Little.

“We were down 10 at halftime and then scored 19 points in the third quarter and 13 more in the fourth. We struggled a little with rebounding again and we shot 6-for-15 from the free-throw line.

“We didn’t shoot free throws well down the stretch. The girls played well.

We fought back, but we missed free throws and Glenbard East had a game plan. They were able to get second and third opportunities. If we knock down free throws and get one or two rebounds it’s a different game.”

Little was pleased with Addison Trail’s outing against Hinsdale South.

“We talked about setting the tempo and being able to score baskets inside,” he said. “That worked out pretty well. We were able to take them out of everything. It was a comeback game for us. We got back to what we do and that’s grind it out on defense, control the boards and limit our turnovers and be more poised. Those are the things we have to keep doing to get ready for the postseason.”

At Lisle, the Blazers split their four games there and ended up finishing fourth overall. Addison Trail started the tournament with wins against Wheaton Academy and Lisle and then lost to Rosary and Chicago Christian.

“Those first two games we showed that we can grind out games,” Little said. “We talked about executing and against Wheaton Academy we executed well. We ran our stuff and had great inside play, which opened up our outside game. Our full-court pressure against Lisle took them out of everything they wanted to do. “ ‘Q’ (Quiana Birmingham) and Demi (Koulogeorgas) swarmed their guards to the point that they couldn’t run their offense. Mia Johnson and Mary Velez did a great job inside and with their rebounding. We were able to play everybody in that game and we didn’t miss a beat. We took them out of everything they tried to do.”

Little noted Rosary abandoned man-to-man defense in Addison Trail’s third game in favor of a 1-22 zone.

“We lost by eight and we didn’t shoot the ball well,” he said. “Rosary had a game plan and they stuck to it. Our girls stepped up, but we couldn’t hit a shot when we needed it.”

Little felt fatigue may have come into play in the final game against Walther Christian.

“We were coming off three games in three days and our legs probably were a little tired,” he said. “Walther Christian played a great game. They pushed the ball, hit shots when they needed to and their pressure was good.

We ran out of gas.”

Little added Johnson, Velez, Koulogeorgas and Birmingham were constants on the scoresheet in the Lisle tournament. “They did a lot of scoring and played good defense,” he said. “They came in night in and night out and really grinded it out.”

Birmingham, Koulogeorgas, Velez and Ally Severino scored in double digits against Glenbard East.

“We try to spread the wealth. It’s not a one-girl team,” said Little. “They support each other and play as one. On any given night it’s a matter of who gets going. That’s a bonus.”

Koulogeorgas was cited for her continued strong leadership.

“Our senior leadership with Demi has been phenomenal,” Little said.

“She’s out their guarding the other team’s best player and running the show when ‘Q’ is not running the show, and she’s knocking down big shots when we need them.”

Addison Trail plays Maine East and Proviso East this week.

“These girls are trying,” said Little. “They have bought into what we are teaching. They are out their grinding games out and believing in each other.

If they lose, they know what they can do better before they get to the locker room after the game. They take it upon themselves because they believe in themselves.”

Willowbrook wrestling team plenty busy over the holidays Warriors go 3-0 on second day at Don Flavin DeKalb Invite

The Willowbrook wrestling team had some successes over the holidays as a team and on the individual front as well.

Coming off a tough West Suburban Conference Gold Division loss to Morton, the Warriors competed well at the Don Flavin Invitational hosted by DeKalb High School Dec. 27-28.

Willowbrook was 3-3 in duals at DeKalb, going 3-0 the second day of competition.

“We built our schedule to make it tougher upfront and get us ready for the end of the year,” said Willowbrook coach Tim Ortiz. “We had some down matches the first day but we came back strong the second day and took care of business. It was a little rough the first day. I think we were getting the rust off after having a couple days off at Christmas. We got right back into it the second day and competed well.”

Earlier, the Warriors dropped a close 32-31 WSC Gold dual to Morton Dec. 19.

“That one was tough,” Ortiz noted.

“We were right there with them in a conference dual in a hostile environment. We are getting there. The team is coming together.”

At the Rex Whitlatch Invitational,

held Dec. 20-21 at Hinsdale Central, Willowbrook had eight wrestlers advance to the second day of competition, with three of them placing. Senior Zach Seymore finished fourth, junior Elijah Brockie took fifth and senior Wyatt Borri was seventh.

“Hinsdale is one of the top tournaments in the state,” said Ortiz in referring to the Whitlatch Invitational.

Heading into the new year, Brockie, Borri, Seymore and junior David Kapica were leading the way in the win-loss ledger.

“It’s a very coachable group,” said Ortiz. “They pay attention to the little details. When we point out improvements that need to be made, they are willing to fix them. When they get themselves in tough positions, they work through them. Instead of hang-

ing where they are most comfortable, they work through problems.

“They are working hard in the wrestling room so when they get into these tough positions, they can use that knowledge and figure things out.

They are coachable kids who work hard and that translates on the mat.

They are making it work.”

Ortiz has been thrilled with the progress the team has made given the changes made to the team’s schedule this season.

“The schedule is stronger,” he said.

“That is going to get us ready for the state series where we will be ready to compete. It’s great to see the kids buy in and be coachable and adjust.”

Ortiz also has been pleased with the recent progress sophomore Nick Mabutas has made.

“Nick is coming on strong,” he said. “He’s growing into a 152-pound body. As a freshman he was at 138.

At 152 pounds, you see a lot of strong guys in that class. He’s growing into his weight and class. He will go up to 160 if we ask him. He buys into everything. He’s has a work ethic that is second to none. He played both ways in football and he didn’t miss a beat coming in here. He puts the team first, he listens and he buys in.”

Willowbrook was 10-5 overall through late last week and 1-2 in WSC Gold action. The Warriors wrestled Elk Grove in a non-conference dual earlier this week and head to the Sycamore Invitational on Saturday.

“That’s another big tournament for us,” said Ortiz.

Vince Doran to be inducted into IBCA Hall of Fame Veteran coach starred as a player at now defunct Driscoll and Elmhurst College

York boys basketball coach Vince Doran can add hall of famer to his resume.

Doran will be inducted this coming spring into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a player.

Doran, now in his eighth season as York’s head coach, starred at the high school level at now shuttered Driscoll Catholic High School in Addison and then went on to have another stellar run on the hardwood at Elmhurst College.

“It’s a really cool honor,” Doran said.

Doran noted York athletic director Rob Wagner arranged to have Mark Kleeman, his coach at Driscoll, surprise Doran during a recent player-parent meeting he was conducting at the Elmhurst school. The announcement and revelation of Kleeman occurred during the meeting.

“Our AD put it together and my

high school coach came up and was introduced while we were doing a thing on program expectations with the parents and players,” Doran explained. “It was special and certainly very surprising. I’ve gone from a coach to friend relationship with him. He drove up three hours from Peoria to do it. This is very neat. I’m very excited and honored. It’s something I am looking for.”

Doran is a 1988 graduate of Driscoll, where he played on the varsity for three years. At the time, he left the school as its all-time leading scorer with just shy of 1,100 career points.

“If you talk to Mark he will say I held every record, but I know that is not true,” Doran said with a laugh.

“I have had a lot of friends reach out to me about this and guys I have played against. I’ve met a lot of people and made a lot of friends through the game and have maintained those friendships over the years.”

Doran graduated from Elmhurst College in 1992 and is in the school’s athletic hall of fame. His senior year he helped lead Elmhurst to the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Fenton’s Miller, Haska named all-tournament at Collins Bison ready for second half of the season

The Fenton girls basketball team received some good news over the holidays.

A pair of Bison players recently were named all-tournament at the recent Collins Academy Christmas tournament in Chicago.

Fenton’s Hailey Miller and Sophia Haska, both sophomores, were named to the all-tournament team at Collins where Fenton went 2-3 in the field.

“The amount of talented players in the tournament was impressive and it is a great honor that both of them were recognized for what they did,”

Fenton coach Dave Mello said. “Hailey played more minutes than any of our girls are used to and had to deal with an endless amount of pressure from other teams. Sophia was an absolute terror on the glass and played strong under the basket against some high-level girls.”

Fenton recorded a 71-42 win against Chicago Crane and then ended up playing an impromptu game when North Lawndale’s foe failed to show. Mello was asked if his team wanted to play Lawndale and he accepted. Fenton lost that contest 5251.

“We trailed 36-10 with 11 minutes left,” Mello pointed out. “We then outscored them 41-16 and had the ball with a chance to win with

Prior to York, Doran was the head

boys coach at Hinsdale South for 10 years. He also was the head coach at Driscoll for two of the four years he was on the boys staff there.

He also had assistant coaching stints at De La Salle and Reavis (3 years) and spent time on college

sidelines at Lewis and Benedictine.

Doran is in his 18th year as a business teacher at Hinsdale South.

He will be enshrined into the IBCA Hall of Fame Saturday, May 2, at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

In addition to excelling on the field and court this past fall, the Willowbrook athletics program had an abundance of high achievers in the classroom.

In boys cross country, Raymond Brisbois, Brandon Heselton and Jake Jagiello earned all-academic honors.

Madeleine Wilkie, Michelle Villalobos and Isabel Willett earned all-academic honors in girls cross country.

On Willowbrook’s record-breaking football team, Sam Tumilty, Elijah Brockie, Mohammed Ayesh, Nick Mabutas, Anthony Yannotti, Tyler Piehl-Haymes and Alessio Battaglia were all-academic award recipients.

Logan Rattana, Utah Keehner and Joey Zopel were all-academic for boys golf, while Alexis Masseo and Julianna Paulsen were honored in girls golf.

Isai Aparicio, Brian Fuentes and Eric Hoda were all-academic in boys soccer, while Emy Hayes, Kelsey Fitzgerald and Ellie Hassler were all-academic in girls swimming.

Maddie Brown, Priscilla DelValle, Ryley Goles, Ellie King, Emily Jarosz, Natalia Murgas and Ava Stratton were all-academic in girls tennis.

All-academic recipients in girls volleyball included Peyton Ceh, Laine Degnan, Grace Palcek and Alondra Mendoza.

All-conference recipients in the fall included Tyler King in boys cross country, Melissa Martinez, Daylee Braden and Wilkie in girls

Tumilty, Deandre Holliday, Everett Stubblefield, Ryan Ranieri, Brian Dilger, Travis Moore, Enrique Cruz, Brockie, Ayesh, Mabutas, Josh Brown and Isabelle Manning were all-conference in football.

Tumilty was the West Suburban Conference Gold MVP. Holliday and Stubblefield shared the WSC Gold co-offensive MVP honor. Ranieri was named the WSC Gold most valuable lineman, while Manning was named the WSC Gold most valuable special teams player.

Tumilty received all-state accolades from multiple outlets, including the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association, Edgy Tim and the Champaign News Gazette. Stubblefield was an all-state honorable mention by the coaches association.

Keehner was all-conference in boys golf, while Dorian Mahone and Norman Deci were all-conference in boys soccer.

Carolyn Burns, DeAnna Tate and Hassler earned all-conference in girls swimming. Hassler won three sectional events and was all-state in three events in the athletes with disabilities category.

Meyer commits to Triton Willowbrook baseball player Dax Meyer recently announced his commitment to continue his career on the diamond at Triton Junior College in River Grove.

Meyer, a senior at Willowbrook, is ranked No. 167 in the state by Prep Baseball Report. He struck out 25

batters in 20 innings of work last season for coach Vic Wisner’s squad.

Willowbrook football by the numbers How impressive was the Willowbrook football team last decade? The program’s Twitter account recently pointed out that after starting the decade 2-16 overall, the Warriors went 60-27 with six playoff appearances, three state quarterfinal trips, one semifinal appearance (this past season) and three (and counting) West Suburban Conference Gold Division titles.

During the last decade, Willowbrook had five West Suburban Gold MVP award winners and 14 all-state players.

Jessen at Northwestern Willowbrook wrestling great Jack Jessen is wrestling at 184 pounds as a redshirt first-year member of the Northwestern wrestling team. Jessen picked up his first win of the season by major decision over North Dakota State’s Noah Cressel on Nov. 24.

He also had two wins at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas invitational with a 53-second pin over Hofstra’s Charles Small and win by technical fall over Kent State’s Tyler Bates.

Last season, Jessen wrestled unattached at 184 pounds as a true firstyear wrestler. He took first place at the Last Chance Open, winning all three of his matches there.

He also won three of four contests at the Cleveland State Open and two matches at the Lindenwood Open, including one by technical fall. In his first college competition, Jessen took third at the Michigan State Open where he had three straight wins, including one by major decision.

The National Weather Service suggests that abnormally moist ground

conditions and unseasonably higher river levels in the upper Midwest could lead to a considerable risk for repeat flooding this spring. With this in mind, state officials are encouraging Illinois residents to consider flood insurance before the next flood occurs.

They play other sports as well, and that’s what we encourage. However, with that being said, that automatically puts us a little behind when it comes to basketball sense and recognition.

“We are trying to drill all of this in practice and are telling them that it is OK to try something in a game and not have it work. That is a moment they can learn from and grow as a player. Lastly, like every season, we want to be fully prepared to compete at a high level when it’s time for the playoffs.”
