The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 has risen sharply in Illinois and across the country recently, and COVID-19 testing sites around Villa Park—like this site along North Avenue—have been very busy. This particular site (pictured Sunday), which is located in the parking lot of Shalimar Banquets, offers free COVID-19 drive-thru testing. The DuPage County Health Department also offers testing at The Odeum Expo Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Testing is free, but limited tests are available each day. The Illinois Department of Public Health on Dec. 30 reported 128,246 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in the state from Dec. 23 and Dec. 29. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity rate during that same period was 14.4 percent. On Dec. 30, the state set a new record for most new cases in a single day—30,386. Just over 16,000 cases were reported in DuPage County between Dec. 18 and Dec. 31.

Law to impact firefighter labor rights signed by governor Following an administrative decision by the Illinois Labor Relations Board, state Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) supported the law signed Dec. 17 to help some firefighters secure additional collective bargaining rights.

“Firefighter units are not onesize-fits-all from municipality to municipality,” said Cullerton. “It’s important that each unit has the capability to allow for all who are eligible to have the option to embrace their right to collectively bargain, and that’s just what this new law will do.”

House Bill 220, which was signed by Gov. JB Pritzker, establishes a definition for a company officer in regard to firefighters.

Previously, this term, which is not used by all fire departments, was not defined, leading to confusion when it came to which rank of firefighters was eligible for certain labor relation rights.

Under the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act, any ranks considered supervisory positions are excluded from collective bargaining rights. The new law allows departments with the rank of company officer to allow those in that rank to be included in collective bargaining rights, as they do not fall into the category of supervisor under the IPLRA. “The AFFI thanks Sen. Reflections on 2021, stepping forward to ’22 By

Would I want to live out the life I’d planned? Yes. Of course I would. That got taken from me and that will never change. This life I am living is not what I planned; it’s what I have, still.

And in looking ahead to 2022, I can say firmly and unabashedly that I look forward to the future.

I couldn’t say that a year ago, but I can with resolute confidence now.

Bring it on 2022. Let’s grow together.

Let’s meet some new friends. Let’s dance and laugh and live this life.

With that, I offer a huge thanks to all of you who have made this new me possible.

It’s that time of year. Out with the old, in with the new. It would be an understatement to say that I welcome the new. It would more of an understatement that I still mourn the old. But I’m getting there.

It’s been a year of hardship for me as well as a year of healing. Mostly healing. When I look back to last January, I can honestly say I was walking around in a complete fog. It’s a wonder I got out of bed, much less wrote columns—which I did. I didn’t miss a one.

I think meeting those deadlines helped in ways I didn’t understand at the time. They forced me to do something—anything. That, in turn got me up each morning. It made me shower and get dressed and pretend to exert some normalcy in a life that was anything but normal at the time.

People were counting on me to tap out 600 or so words each week and I think that helped to keep me going.

People were counting on me—at a time when I couldn’t count on myself, when I couldn’t, or wouldn’t—do something for me, because I didn’t have it in me. I was exhausted.

Beyond that, honestly.

There was no gas in the tank.

I felt completely empty. Still do, sometimes, but the emptiness is slowly dissipating. The tank is slowly being replenished. It’s been a process.

It is a process.

And in the end, I have not only the growth and the renewal of my life, but I have my written words. Columns that came out of the depths of grief as well as the depths of healing and finding life anew. Columns demonstrating the miracle of hope.

The miracle of the continuance of life.

My written words helped keep me alive. I’m so glad they helped others, but just as much they helped me.

I guess what I’m trying to say is “Thank you.” In so many ways, this column kept me going. Kind messages and emails from readers kept me afloat. They kept my head above water at a time when I wasn’t sure whether I’d drown or not.

When I think about how far I’ve come, tears stream down my face. I can’t stop them and don’t think I’d want to. I’ve learned that tears can cleanse. Tears can heal. And 2021 has been a year of healing for me, as I hope it has been for others.

I hope I never have to repeat this growth, but now that I’m going into 2022, I’m glad for all the lessons, all the heartache and all the pain. Because pain can become strength. Heartache can become joy. Lessons can help you become the teacher.

I can boldly say I am not the same person I was a year ago; she is but a shadow of me. I look no different from the outside, but my inside has changed most completely.

Would I go back to my old self, my old me? I’m not sure I could anymore.

When you change, you change.

Warriors’ unbeaten season ends with a loss to Wheaton North

Willowbrook finishes third at Falcons’ holiday tournament, ends December with a 13-1 record

The Willowbrook girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2021-22 season on Dec. 27, when it lost 60-50 to Wheaton North in a semifinal game at Wheaton North’s Bill Neibch Falcon Classic. The Warriors, who won their first 12 games of the season, improved to 13-1 by beating Waubonsie Valley 71-58 to win the event’s third-place trophy on Dec. 28.

The Warriors’ season resumes with this Friday’s West Suburban Gold Conference home game against Downers Grove South. Willowbrook, which enters the game with a 5-0 conference mark, will finish the first half of its West Suburban Gold Schedule with Friday’s contest.

The Warriors opened the event at Wheaton North with an 80-21 win over Elgin on Dec. 22. Willowbrook was supposed to play another game at the tournament on Dec. 23, but that contest was canceled. The holiday event at Wheaton North, like several others in the area, had to adjust its schedule after multiple teams dropped out due to issues related to COVID-19.

Wheaton North delivered a 10-0 run to finish the first half of last week’s semifinal game against Willowbrook. The Falcons completed their run by making a 3-point shot at the end of the second quarter to take a 33-22 halftime lead.

The Warriors cut Wheaton North’s lead to 41-39 by the end of the third quarter. Senior Sophie Sullivan sank a 3-point shot to trim the Falcons’ lead to 39-36. Sophomore Elle Bruschuk made a corner 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter to reduce Wheaton North’s lead to 41-39.

Willowbrook junior Sara Stout delivered an inside basket to even

the score at 41-41 with 6:10 to play.

About 30 seconds later, Bruschuk drained a shot to give the Warriors a 43-41 lead. Stout’s second basket of the fourth quarter pushed Willowbrook’s lead to 45-41 with about 4:45 remaining.

The Falcons then went on a 9-0 run to take a 50-45 lead. Wheaton North began its run with a 3-point shot with about 4:30 left in the game.

Willowbrook freshman Hannah Kenny ended the Falcons’ run when she made a 3-point shot to cut Wheaton North’s lead to 50-48 with 2:23 to play.

Bruschuk drained a pair of free throws to slice the Falcons’ lead to 52-50 with 53.1 seconds remaining.

About 10 seconds later, Wheaton North scored a basket off an offensive rebound to take a 54-50 lead.

The Falcons, who made eight free throws in the final quarter, sealed their victory at the free-throw line.

Bruschuk provided 18 points and 10 rebounds in Willowbrook’s loss to Wheaton North. Sullivan scored 10 points, while Stout contributed nine points and six rebounds. Hannah Kenny sank three shots from 3-point range to provide nine points.

“We took the lead and we relaxed,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell after the Warriors’ first loss of the season. “When we got to where we needed to be, we didn’t close the game out.”

Wheaton North went on to lose 57-48 to Glenbrook South in the tournament championship game, which took place after the third-place game on Dec. 28.

The Warriors rebounded from their first loss of the season to pull away from Waubonsie Valley in the third-place contest. Sullivan made a 3-point shot late in the first half to

give Willowbrook a 33-26 halftime lead. Sullivan added another 3-point shot in the third quarter to push the lead to 37-26. Sophomore Calli Kenny added two 3-point shots to boost the Warriors’ lead to 44-30. A 3-pointer from Bruschuk raised the lead to 49-33 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter. The Warriors’ lead stood at 53-37 with eight minutes to play.

Calli Kenny helped the Warriors to the win over Waubonsie Valley by scoring 13 points during the fourth quarter. She finished the game with a team-leading 21 points, 19 of which came during the second half.

Shortly after Waubonsie Valley made a 3-point shot to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 64-55, Calli Kenny delivered a layup to raise the lead to 11 points. She added two free throws in the closing seconds to provide the final points of the game.

Calli Kenny’s productive fourth quarter included a stretch in which she accounted for 11 straight Willowbrook points. That run began with a basket that boosted the lead to 57-42. She added a 3-point shot, followed by a field goal, two free throws and the layup that extended the lead to 66-55.

Sullivan, who made three shots from 3-point range, added 18 points.

Bruschuk and Hannah Kenny both scored 11 points.

Stout contributed six points, while junior Angie Lizasuain scored four points.

“Calli came through in the fourth quarter,” said Harrell after the win over Waubonsie Valley. “With this team, we’ve got four girls [Bruschuk, Sullivan and the Kenny sisters] who can really score. They might not get noticed as much because they split up the points.”

The Willowbrook boys basketball team finished the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic on a winning note.

The Warriors, who lost their first three games at Hinsdale Central’s event, completed the tournament with a 64-27 victory over Glenbard East on Dec. 29. The Warriors improved their overall season record to 5-8 with their win over the Rams.

Willowbrook’s schedule this week includes Friday’s West Suburban Gold Conference game at Downers Grove South, followed by Saturday’s non-conference home game against Lake Zurich.

The Warriors lost their first-round game at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic, falling 75-59 to Homewood-Flossmoor on Dec. 22. The Vikings of Homewood-Flossmoor went on to win the tournament title, defeating Oswego East 62-44 in the

championship game on Dec. 29. The Vikings beat Willowbrook, St. Rita and Stevenson before meeting Oswego East in the title contest.

One day after losing to Homewood-Flossmoor, the Warriors dropped a 64-62 decision to Lincoln-Way Central. Five days later, Willowbrook lost 66-58 to Oak Forest.

“We’ve played a lot of great competition so far,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins after last week’s win over Glenbard East. “I think that’s only going to help us get better for the back end of the season.”

Oak Forest, which did not play its first two scheduled games at Hinsdale Central’s tournament because of COVID-19 related issues, improved its overall record to 11-1 with its win over Willowbrook. Oak Forest fell to 11-2 after completing the holiday event with an overtime loss to Richards on Dec. 29.

Oak Forest led the Warriors 18-13 after one quarter and 33-24 at halftime. The lead grew to 50-37 by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Noah Campbell, who

made four of 13 attempts from 3-point range, scored a team-leading 21 points for Willowbrook in the Dec. 28 loss to Oak Forest. Seniors Marquel Saleek and Evan Stubblefield both scored 12 points. Senior Terrell Walker added seven points, while juniors Joey Tumilty and Isaac Sobieszczyk scored four and two points, respectively.

Willowbrook held a 15-4 lead through one quarter of last week’s game against Glenbard East. The Warriors scored the first six points of the second quarter to take a 21-4 lead. A 3-point shot from Stubblefield boosted the lead to 28-8. Willowbrook led the Rams 33-17 at halftime.

The Warriors went on a 13-3 run to start the third quarter to build a 4620 lead. Willowbrook’s lead stood at 51-22 by the end of the third quarter.

Junior Cameron Ray made a 3-point shot in the first minute of the third quarter to give the Warriors a 54-22 lead. Ray’s shot gave Willowbrook a fourth-quarter lead of at least 30

Driver Services facilities closed through Jan. 17 Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases statewide, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is announcing that all Secretary of State departments will not conduct in-person transactions— including Driver Services facilities— from Jan. 3, through Jan. 17.

All departments and Driver Services facilities will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 18. White is encouraging the public to visit ilsos.gov for online services. Online transactions will remain open for all departments to

conduct office services, including, but not limited to the following: • Renewing a license plate sticker.

• Renewing a driver’s license or ID card for those who qualify (individuals may call 217-785-1424 to confirm their eligibility or to obtain their PIN).

• Obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card.

• Obtaining a driver record abstract.

• Filing Business Services docu-

ments, such as incorporations and annual reports.

In addition, the Drivers and Vehicles Services hotline phone number will remain open at 800-252-8980.

As a reminder, White has extended all driver’s license and ID card expiration dates to March 31. This extension does not apply to commercial

driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

“After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to close all Driver Services facilities beginning Jan. 3 through Jan. 17 due to the spike in COVID-19 cases,” said White. “The health and safety of employees and the public remains paramount, and face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus. Our goal is to safely reopen all offices and Driver Services facilities on January 18 for face-to-face transactions.”

In addition, White greatly expanded remote renewal for driver’s license and ID card holders. Since this fall, White’s office mailed letters to eligible customers with expired driver’s licenses and ID cards requiring them to renew online, by phone or by mail. The office estimates that this helps to eliminate the need for approximately 1 million people to visit a facility.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) announced Dec. 27 that the first known cases of the Omicron variant in DuPage County were reported.

The DCHD received Illinois Department of Public Health data including 16 DuPage County residents with the Omicron variant identified, with the earliest positive test collected on Dec. 8.

At this time, none of the Omicron variant cases of COVID-19 have been reported as hospitalized or deceased.

COVID-19 activity remains at very high levels with Delta and Omicron variants predominantly circulating in DuPage County and statewide.

Vaccination is crucial to reducing transmission of COVID-19 and preventing the emergence of new variants.

Hello Villa Park. The other day I happened to drive by one of our neighborhood schools as they were letting out. I’ve never seen so many SUVs; it looked like a used car lot. Is there anyone who actually walks to school?

Isn’t that why we have neighborhood schools? I’m so sick of how we’ve abused children with pandemic nonsense. It’s not just the fresh air and exercise of walking to school—that’s the easy answer. It’s more the independence and social skills that go along with it. It’s not the forced-organized stuff. Be outside, hang with kids on your block, talk smack, have a few laughs—gee, sounds like freedom. So, let’s do this; let’s start with a “Walk to School Day,” just one day and then we can expand. And for parents with separation anxiety, you can go to the end of the block and stand on the corner. *** Ex-President Trump was in Dallas, Texas, speaking at a Republican rally recently. In the course of his oration, he mentioned that he had received a booster shot. This brought a resounding response of loud boos from his audience. The mentality of these rightwing anti-vaccination advocates leaves a lot to be desired. Why didn’t Mr. Trump take this opportunity to encourage his constituents to get vaccinated?

I’ll tell you why: He and his millions of followers continually make this pandemic a political problem rather than a worldwide dilemma. *** There’s a dog-rescue organization whose name I can’t remember that has been airing commercials throughout the holiday season. I admire their work and feel sorry for the poor dogs that have been abused. The only thing that doesn’t sit well with me regarding this commercial is playing Silent Night in the background. Silent Night is about the birth of the Christ child. Couldn’t this organization have picked another song? *** A previous Speak Out writer is waiting for good things that socialism governments have produced. Starting with Franklin Roosevelt, Social Security, Unemployment Insurance and the FDIC program are all excellent socialistic programs. Lyndon Johnson came up with Medicare. Barack Obama produced Obamacare which is gaining popularity all the time. Other popular Democratic programs are Medicaid and the newest insurance program Medicare Part D which covers drug costs. I am an independent voter who votes for candidates of both parties.

Tree store. A woman in the checkout line next to me was complaining to the cashier about the rise in prices at Dollar Tree since most items now cost $1.25 instead of $1. Someone standing in line right in front of me decided to join their conversation. “It’s corporate greed.

There, I said it.” I didn’t say a word, but I felt like telling this big mouth, “If you can turn off CNN for a minute, try going to any grocery store, pharmacy or a Walmart or Target, and you will pay double, triple or even quadruple the price for similar items.” *** There’s an eagle on the state of Illinois flag. I think a sheep should replace the eagle because we seem to have plenty of sheeple in this state who just go along with the COVID program and never question anything. *** I remember Kamala Harris when she said in 2020 that she would not get any vaccine pushed by Donald Trump.

Trump haters like her expressed similar sentiments. Ahh, but now that they are in power, these vaccines that were started while Trump was president are the be-all, end-all. Now it’s our patriotic duty to get vaccinated, according to Biden and the regressive left. *** The COVID-19 panic and scare is programmed to last at least until the next November election. It will enable the powers that be to facilitate mailin election ballots en masse. Mail-in ballots can promote fraudulent votes.

Thank you. *** I won’t likely change any opinions, but for those who still doubt masks can work, a really good article, “COVID Lessons,” in the July/August 2021 Discover magazine explains it this way: While mask layers are porous enough for virus particles to pass through, “Most viruses, including COVID-19 and the flu, don’t hang out solo in the air. They’re surrounded by so-called respiratory droplets, globs of fluid that people spew when they cough or sneeze. Masks effectively block most of those larger droplets, both incoming and outgoing, from your mouth and nose.” It also points out, “Flu case counts for the 2020-21 season were more than 90 percent lower than the prior year, in large part because people weren’t spewing droplets all over each other.” The article further explains that though the virus makes you ill, it is also the way our immune system mobilizes to fight it, called a “cytokine storm,” that factors in to how sick someone becomes. Tracking that reaction may help determine a patient’s COVID-19 prognosis. *** America is not about free stuff. It’s

about freedom. My Democratic friends don’t want to talk about it. It seems they are suffering from Biden, I mean, buyer’s remorse, especially now they don’t have Trump to complain about. *** The murder of Kitty Genovese in 1964 led to the term “bystander effect,” where no one came forward to help, figuring someone else would do it. It even became a standard topic in basic psychology and sociology courses. I just read about the 14-year-old girl in California accidentally shot and killed—bullet went through a dressing room wall—by police shooting at a suspect who was reportedly attacking several shoppers and in plain view beating up a woman with a cable lock. Witnesses say when she tried to escape, he dragged her on the ground toward the dressing room. While I don’t advocate blindly rushing in, I can’t help but wonder, if some brave soul(s) stepped in to restrain this guy, maybe the police might not have shot when and where they did, and the teenager might still be alive (the suspect’s actions notwithstanding). Bystanders were probably too busy recording it on their phones to help this poor woman, who was defenseless. *** We need to pass a movement to defund politicians who don’t stand up to the oath of office they took to uphold the Constitution, and are more concerned about their political future than they are about America’s future. How ignorant is it to defund the police, on the other hand? We need to preserve our culture and traditions. *** The more power a government has, the less freedom the people have, and too bad Illinois does not have a senator like Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who truly represents his constituents. *** Will we ever get back to critical thinking and common sense? The present herd mentality is going to drive America as we know it over the proverbial cliff. The past 11 months of our government actions are going to take years to change it back. *** Hey, let’s bring Jim Harbaugh back to the Bears. Get rid of Nagy. Bring back Harbaugh. You know, he’s got the credibility. He’s got a winning record.

He’s a Bear. It’s a win, win, win, win, win for everybody. Go Bears next year. *** DuPage judges had better start handing out very strict and maximum long sentences to those who are coming into our community and committing crimes or we will be in same boat as Chicago.

This shooting in Oak Brook and carjackings have to stop, Judges need to send strong messages. This cannot be tolerated in DuPage County. You may also want to double check how liberal your judge is in the next election. We need tough on crime judges. *** I was listening to Allison Arwady, the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, on the radio today (Dec. 30). She said, “If you think it’s a cold, if you think it’s the flu, it’s probably COVID.” When you have a public health official making statements like this, it’s no wonder people panic and rush to get tested. I’ve had colds and I’ve had the flu countless times during my life, and I’m not going to run to get a COVID test every time I have a runny nose or feel nauseous.

Hospitals restrict visitation due to rise in COVID-19 Because of the rise in COVID-19 cases and to protect patients, staff and the community, Edward-Elmhurst Health (EEH) is now restricting routine visitation at all of its locations.

No routine visitors will be allowed in EEH hospitals (Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital, Linden Oaks Behavioral Health) or other settings until further notice.

Adult patients with an appointment or visiting EEH physician offices, ambulatory care centers, emergency departments or immediate cares must come alone.

Companions or care partners who remain must wait in their vehicle.

Exceptions for approved care partners will be taken into consideration.

All public areas of EEH’s build-

ings, including cafes, coffee shops, gift shops and common waiting areas, will be closed to patients and approved care partners.

Exceptions for specific patient populations: • Pediatric patients.

• Minors (under age 18) at an outpatient appointment or Emergency Department or Immediate Care visit may be accompanied by one parent or legal guardian.

• Pediatric inpatients, including patients on the general Pediatric Unit, PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit), NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit), Special Care Nursery and patients under the age of 18, may have two parents/legal guardians present.

• Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Routine visitors are not allowed in the ICU. • The need for visitors based on extenuating circumstances, such as end of life or a significant change in status, will be determined by staff.

• Mother-baby/labor and delivery.

Patients may have one care partner.

If the patient is diagnosed with COVID-19 or awaiting test results, the care partner must remain in the patient’s room for the duration of the visit.

Extenuating circumstances: • If the visit or appointment cannot be completed without the presence of a care partner because of a patient’s physical or mental condition, or other limitations, an exception may be made.

• Exceptions will be managed by

the leadership of each department.

Care partners who have been approved due to extenuating circumstances must meet the following requirements: • Pass a visitor screening upon entry.

• No active COVID infection.

• No exposure to COVID in the last 14 days.

• Comply with all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), physical

distancing and hand hygiene requirements. Must wear a mask covering their nose and mouth at all times.

Care partners or visitors refusing to comply will be asked to leave.

• Remain in the patient’s room at all times.
