New business law mandates sexual harassment training Businesses in the State of Illinois are now required to annually train their employees on how to both report and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace—or risk a steep penalty of fines if not in compliance.

According to a release issued by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, restaurant and bar owners and owners of casinos and hotels must comply with additional protections for their employees, regardless of classification.

“Our Chamber will be reviewing

options for providing members with online and/or in-person opportunities for training their employees about sexual harassment prevention,” stated John R. Quigley, ECCI’s President and CEO, “using resources provided by members, via multi-chamber partnership, via the Illinois Chamber of Commerce or through the state.”

Packaged within an omnibus bill, titled the Workplace Transparency Act, which amended the Illinois Human Rights Act, businesses will have until the end of this year to complete

initial employee training, which is required to be done annually.

The state’s Department of Human Rights, which administers the Illinois Human Rights Act, has created a training curriculum that is available free of charge for business use as is or for businesses to use as a template for developing their own training.

Employers also can opt to buy training course from a private-sector provider.

The new law requires businesses to have a written sexual harassment

policy that, a minimum, includes: (i) a prohibition on sexual harassment; (ii) details on how an individual can report an allegation of sexual harassment, including options for making a confidential report to a supervisor, ethics officer, Inspector General, or the Department of Human Rights; (iii) a prohibition on retaliation for reporting sexual harassment allegations, including availability of whistleblower protections under the State Officials and Employee Ethics Act, the Whistleblower Act, and the

Illinois Human Rights Act; and (iv) the consequences of a violation of the prohibition on sexual harassment and the consequences for knowingly making a false report.

The law also affords Independent contractors protection against sexual harassment.

More than 500 sexual harassment charges were filed in Illinois in 2018, compared to some 350 charges in 2017, according to data from the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Bond set for two men accused of stealing car at gunpoint approached a man at one of the gas pumps, put a gun to the man’s side and told him “give me the money.” It is further alleged that Simmons then demanded the keys to the man’s car and that Simmons and Matthews then got in the car, with Simmons driving, and drove away.

As the duo drove away, the car then reportedly broke down in traffic at which time Darien police officers observed the two men flee the vehicle. Officers pursued the men and after a foot chase, which led through a nearby golf course, both men were apprehended. Police also recovered the gun allegedly used in the hijacking along with a 30-round extended magazine.

Elections board corrects non-citizen voting numbers

Only 15 people who self-identified as not being U.S. citizens cast ballots in the 2018 and 2019 elections, the Illinois State Board of Elections said in a correction Jan. 23, three of which actually turned out to be citizens.

Spokesperson Matt Dietrich had initially reported that 16 possible non-citizens had voted. In a clarification Jan. 23, he said one of the voters had voted in two different elections and was inadvertently counted as two voters.

Those people were able to vote due to a recently discovered programming error in Illinois’ new automatic voter registration system that automatically signs people up to vote when they apply for or renew their driver’s license.

Officials in Secretary of State Jesse White’s office, which manages driver’s licenses, have accepted responsibility for the error and say the problem was immediately fixed.

That system, the result of 2017 legislation that passed both chambers of the General Assembly by unanimous, bipartisan votes, officially launched July 2, 2018. But the program-

ming glitch that failed to filter out people who identified themselves as non-citizens wasn’t discovered until December 2019. By that time, 545 people who identified as being non-citizens were registered to vote.

The elections board has said consistently that some of those individuals may actually be citizens who accidentally checked the wrong box on their driver’s license applications.

“We continue to work with local election authorities to establish the voting eligibility status of the remaining individuals who voted and of all 545 individuals who were mistakenly registered during the AVR process,” Dietrich said in a statement Thursday.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are now calling for legislative hearings to determine how the mistake happened and what is being done to make sure it is not repeated.

Wheaton police arrest Villa Park man in relation to ‘swatting’ incident

A Villa Park man has been charged in relation to a “swatting” incident that allegedly occurred last October in Wheaton.

According to a Timothy press release from Jackson the Wheaton Police Department, Timothy Jackson, 27, has been charged with felony disorderly conduct—making a false 911 call, a Class 4 felony.

volving the discharge of a firearm in a multi-unit dwelling in the 700 block of Childs Street.

The unidentified caller allegedly did not provide dispatch a unit number.

Wheaton Police Department officers and officers from Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream and Winfield responded along with members of DuPage County’s M.E.R.I.T. SWAT Team to provide tactical assistance.

Police said roads had to be shut down from the numerous emergency vehicles, and residents in the surrounding area of the alleged incident location were temporary displaced while the officers attempted to identify the location of the incident.

The unidentified caller then alleged-

ly called 9-1-1 again and provided a specific unit number. After police officers met with the occupants of the specific unit, it became apparent no criminal activity had occurred and the occupants had been victims of a “swatting.”

Over the next two months, Wheaton Police Department detectives were able to develop a suspect, and on Jan. 8, it arrested Jackson on unrelated charges for aggravated driving while license revoked, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon at the Exxon 7-11 in the 600 block of Roosevelt in Wheaton.

“Mr. Jackson allegedly abused our communities’ emergency 9-1-1 com-

munications, which resulted in the response of numerous police agency’s officers and a waste of our emergency services’ resources,” said Wheaton Deputy Police Chief P.J. Youker. “Let Mr. Jackson’s criminal charge serve a cautionary tale for any individual who wastes public safety resources and endangers lives. We will thoroughly investigate these incidents and hold those responsible accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Jackson is currently being held at the DuPage County Jail on a $20,000 bond (with 10 percent to apply) for the felony disorderly conduct/false 911 call charge and a $75,000 bond (10 percent to apply) for the unrelated charges.

Villa Park firefighter/paramedic Brian Morrice was recognized last week for his lifesaving efforts near his Plainfield home. Morrice was at his home on Nov. 4, when he received a call from a neighbor. The neighbor related that a female family member had choked on food and collapsed. Morrice responded to provide assistance to the woman, who lost her pulse. Morrice began chest compressions until Plainfield Fire Protection District crews arrived. “Because of their coordinated actions, the patient is alive today,” stated the Plainfield district in a certificate of recognition honoring Morrice. Last week, Plainfield Fire Chief Jon Stratton and Deputy Fire Chief Vito Bonomo III visited the Villa Park Fire Department to present Morrice with the CPR/AED Save Award.

The award is presented to “any personnel who is principally involved in saving the life of another person, and whose personal actions were directly responsible for the lifesaving act.”

Chicago woman has confirmed case of novel coronavirus after trip to China Health officials say risk to public is ‘low’ despite unknown strain of virus

A Chicago resident is the second person in the United States with a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, and has killed at least 26 people in that country and sickened more than 900 worldwide.

“At this time, the risk to the general public remains low,” Gov. JB Pritzker said at an unrelated news conference Jan. 24.

The individual who tested posi-

tive for the virus is a Chicago woman who recently returned from Wuhan.

Pritzker said the number of people she came into contact with since returning to the U.S. is “small.”

“We are closely monitoring this situation and taking every precaution,” he said, adding that state and city health and aviation departments are working with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the issue.

He said the public should take the same precautions as in the flu season—that is, washing hands and visiting a doctor if symptoms show.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said while the virus bears the same name

as known viruses, this strain is different than those that are known.

“As it is novel and emerging, we are still trying to learn all that we need to learn about this virus, both in terms of its symptomatology, how people get infected, the length from exposure to symptoms, all of that we are still trying to master,” she said.

The CDC said in a news release coronaviruses are “a large family of viruses, some causing respiratory illness in people and others circulating among animals including camels, cats and bats.”

“Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve and infect people and then spread between people, such as has been seen with Severe Acute

Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS),” the news release said.

Ezike said CDC officials had arrived in Chicago on Jan. 24 and others were on the way.

She said the Chicago woman was not symptomatic during her travels from Wuhan when she returned on Jan. 13, but started experiencing them in “the following days.”

The patient is stable and hospitalized, she said.

Authorities are working with the hospital to identify any other people who may need to be assessed for possible exposure.

“Health officials in Illinois are looking retrospectively to identify

other individuals who have symptoms of coronavirus who may have traveled from Wuhan before the heightened airport screenings and before the case was confirmed in the U.S.,” Ezike said.

According to the CDC, there are 63 cases being monitored across the country. The other confirmed U.S. case was in Washington State.

Chicago O’Hare airport is currently screening passengers as they arrive from China.

The CDC recommends travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Wuhan and encourages those making the trip to practice safe hand hygiene and avoid any people experiencing illness.

Illinois Supreme Court hears two lawsuits against school districts

Two Illinois school districts defended their actions against an elementary school teacher and a restoration company before the Illinois Supreme Court on Jan. 22.

The justices’ eventual decisions could determine how school employees can use paid family leave, and whether contracts are enforceable if they should not have been signed in the first place.

Can paid family leave pick up after breaks?

Margaret Dynak, a teacher at Westview Elementary School in Wood Dale, gave birth in 2016 with one-and-a-half school days left before summer vacation.

Illinois School Code allows full-

time school employees 30 days of paid leave after a child is born. Dynak requested her remaining 28 ½ days of leave be applied to the start of the fall semester, but the Wood Dale School District denied her request because it was months after the birth.

Supreme Court justices will decide whether school employees can use paid parental leave on both ends of an intervening break in the school calendar.

The DuPage County Circuit Court ruled in favor of the school district in 2018, arguing Dynak’s summertime birth does not give her “a right … to sick leave at a future period in time.”

The Appeals Court agreed last June.

In oral arguments Jan. 22, Dynak’s attorney, Ryan Thoma of the

Illinois Education Association, contended Dynak is entitled to all 30 days of her paid leave.

“She did not lose that right based on the happenstance of when her child was born,” he said.

Thoma also argued the law’s phrasing of “leave after an absence” means the 30 days of leave applies to consecutive school days, no matter where they fall in the calendar.

Teachers are “only absent when they are expected to be at work,” he said.

Adam Dauksas, representing the school district, argued that allowing school employees to essentially delay their leave would lead to “absurd results.”

“Sick leave use must be tethered to the event causing the need to be absent from work,” he said. “It can’t

be delayed 10 weeks, 10 months later down the road.”

Thoma rebutted it is “unreasonable” to think school employees would game the system and take extremely delayed leaves.

“It’s the focus of these employees requesting the leave to spend the time with their child,” he said, “and the paid sick leave is there to ease the extreme financial burden of doing so.”

Only six of the Court’s seven justices were present Jan. 22. Justice P. Scott Neville, Jr., was not on the bench.

Do public entities still have to pay void contracts?

In May 2014, a fire significantly damaged Proviso East High School in Maywood.

Then-Proviso Township School District Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart signed a contract with a local restoration and construction company, Restore, to fix the damage before students came back in the fall. A subsequent contract with Restore was signed later by Collins-Hart and school board President Daniel Adams.

Illinois law, however, requires that districts go through a bidding process for contract work, which also then must be approved by a vote of the full school board.

Justices will consider the arguments before ruling on the two cases. There is no estimation on when rulings will be released, though the Court will be back in session March 9.

Mazzochi seeks relief for school districts facing skyrocketing unfunded mandate costs State Representative Deanne Maz- lation greatly simplifies the process; zochi (R-Elmhurst) filed legislation to help school districts whose costs are rising from Illinois’ imposing unfunded mandates—which in turn drives local property tax increases.

Over the last 25 years, Illinois has eviscerated local school board authority over curriculum, staff training, and school policy, in some cases even dictating what kind of textbooks schools can buy.

“Springfield dictates a plethora of burdensome requirements that our school boards don’t want; that our teachers don’t need; yet never assesses whether they actually improve classroom performance and benefit our students,” Rep. Mazzochi said.

“It isn’t fair to keep asking more and more of our teachers and our administrators while sticking them with the bill and the pressure to raise property taxes to cover the cost.”

Mazzochi noted that the State of Illinois’ current opt-out provision “is illusory. It can cost a school or teacher more time and money to endure the opt-out process than to comply with the mandate. This legis-

it puts the burdens back on the state where they belong; and restores our school boards, administrators, and teachers to their proper role of deciding what schools need to deliver to students.” Mazzochi also noted that her legislation, House Bill 4143, specifically lets school districts opt out of unfunded curriculum mandates if the curriculum fails to improve educational outcomes.

“Feedback that I received from administrators and teachers alike is that Illinois’ proliferation of unfunded mandates takes time out of the classroom; drives up administrator costs; adds compliance costs; and eventually leads to unnecessary property tax increases,” Rep. Mazzochi explained. “We should give our local schools the freedom to use their resources in a way that helps students most, and I look forward to working with legislators on both sides of the aisle to make that happen.”

Glowiak Hilton moves to block the lawmaker-to-lobbyist revolving door State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) has introduced legislation to lengthen the period before state officials can become lobbyists.

“In light of recent scandals that have shown how blatant corruption can be in Springfield, we need to send a clear message to citizens and lawmakers that there can be no grey area between who is in government and who represents special interests,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This ensures the passage of an entire election cycle before any former lawmaker can begin influencing the process as the agent of a special interest.”

Senate Bill 2463 prohibits a statewide elected official, administrative

head or deputy administrative head of a State agency, or a member of the General Assembly from lobbying within two years after termination of service. Currently, 37 states have a “cooling-off” period of at least six months.

“I am optimistic that we can make lasting changes to our state’s political culture, and that needs to start with clear laws and clear boundaries,” Glowiak Hilton said.

The legislation awaits consideration in the Illinois Senate. Lawmakers are scheduled to return to Springfield Jan. 28.

State warns of online financial scam The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation is warning of a survey scam impersonating involvement from a department official.

Targets receive a text that appears to be from Capital One that says they must complete a banking survey to receive a $50 reward.

Upon closing the survey, the target receives a message claiming to be from a department official that “thanks” them for completing the survey and lists a department phone number.

This is not from IDFPR; it is part of a phishing scam, where scammers are posing as a reputable company to steal your identity or money.

The department will never offer a reward for completing a survey or providing additional information.

To avoid falling victim to phishing scams, please do the following: • Double-check the message you receive. There may be misspellings or other mistakes in the content of the message.

• Look up the contact information of the company and contact them directly to verify the authenticity of the message.

• Do not click links or download attachments that may be included in the message.

That could lead to malware infecting your device.

St. Pius X Knights of Columbus hosts special movie night at Montini Catholic

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard opened its doors to St. Pius X Knights of Columbus (Father Boeker Council #6090) for a special movie night on Jan. 21. Showing in Montini’s auditorium—leading up to the 2020 March for Life in Washington D.C. (held Jan. 24)—was the movie “Unplanned,” winner of Life Fest Film Festival in 2019. Montini Catholic sent 40 students to this year’s march. From Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, the writers/co-producers of “God’s Not Dead,” “Unplanned” is a film that speaks to one of the most polarizing topics of our day. The movie brings viewers an eye-opening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate. Free will donations were accepted, with the Knights of Columbus donating all proceeds to Montini Catholic students attending the March for Life this year. Montini Catholic is currently working with LeBeau and the Knights of Columbus to bring more Catholic movies to local families. They are hoping to be able to host several Family Catholic Movie Nights at Montini in the future. Willowbrook girls gymnastics team soars to new heights Myers playing well at Roosevelt University

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team is hitting its stride at the right time.

The Warriors cracked the 130-point barrier in a 130.25-72.10 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Morton on Jan. 23.

“We had another outstanding meet, breaking a 130.25 for the first time in a long time in Willowbrook history,” Warriors coach Deanna Zuchowski said. “Our JV hit 111.3, which I’m even more impressed with. We are pushing to the end of the season and learning at the right time.”

In the varsity win, sophomore Tess Placek won the vault with a 9.3 score.

Freshman Sarah Ball was second at 8.4. Junior Maeve Costello scored an 8.1 in the event.

On floor exercise, Willowbrook had three gymnasts hit 9.0 or above. Sophomore Bella Naumovsky and Placek tied for first with 9.1s. Ball registered a 9.0, while junior Riley Wieringa was at 8.2.

On bars, Naumovsky won the event at 8.1. Senior Karli Wilson took third at 7.5.

On beam, Naumovsky won with an 8.75, while Placek was second at 8.45.

Wieringa was third at 7.85 and Ball scored a 7.2.

Placek won the all-around competition at 33.35, while Ball was second at 31.3 and Wieringa was fourth at 30.35.

At the JV 1 level, Willowbrook freshman Hanna Mitrick won the vault at 8.5. Freshman Molly Morris was second at 8.4.

Mitrick won the bars at 7.1 and also took home first-place honors on beam with an 8.0.

Morris won the floor exercise at 8.15, while Mitrick was second at 8.0 and freshman Dima Elagha was third at 7.6.

In the all-around scoring, Mitrick won with a 31.6, while Morris was at 29.65 and Elagha was third with a score of 26.6.

Myers at Roosevelt Former Willowbrook boys basketball player Matt Myers has been a key contributor this season for the Roosevelt University (Chicago) men’s basketball team.

Myers, a 6-4 sophomore forward, is averaging 10.7 points per game in 22 games this season (20 starts). In an average of nearly 25 mintues a game, Myers is shooting .457 from the field, .313 from the 3-point line (15 made) and .649 from the free-throw line (50 of 77). He’s also averaging 3.8 rebounds a game and has 44 assists, 19 steals and 10 blocks.

Myers, whose hometown is Addison, enjoyed a particularly strong recent three-game stretch where he scored 19 points against Governors State (2 three-pointers), had 13 points against Holy Cross and 12 points against Cardinal Stritch out of Milwaukee (2 three-pointers).

The 19 points tied a season high. He also had 19 points against IU Northwest. Myers has hit for double figures

in scoring in 13 games this season.

Schuemer at St. Cloud State Ethan Schuemer is another recent Willowbrook boys basketball blast from the past. Schuemer is a sophomore on the St. Cloud State (Minnesota) men’s basketball team.

The 6-6 sophomore forward-center out of Lombard has played in 18 games this season, averaging 12.8 minutes of action per contest. Schuemer is averaging 3.9 points per game to go with 3.1 rebounds. He’s shooting .556 from the field.

Schuemer hit for a season-high 16 points and nine rebounds earlier in the year against Waldorf, and also had 14 points to go with six rebounds against Oak Hills Christian.

As a freshman, Schuemer scored 48 points in 26 games.

Warriors drop conference game at first-place Proviso East

The Willowbrook girls basketball team completed a rough week with Saturday’s 59-53 West Suburban Gold Conference loss at Proviso East. The Pirates, who sit atop the conference standings, improved their conference record to 9-1. The Warriors fell to 7-3 in the confer-

ence and 13-11 overall with the loss.

Willowbrook trailed Proviso East 18-16 after one quarter and 37-26 at halftime. The Warriors cut the Pirates’ lead to 46-41 by the end of the third quarter.

Juniors Stephanie Dasbach and

Annemarie Knudtson both scored 13 points for the Warriors. Dasbach grabbed 10 rebounds, while Knudtson pulled down seven rebounds.

Senior K’Aliyha Herron contributed 10 points. Senior Khaylah Richey provided five points and eight rebounds. Juniors Lindsey

King and Kaylan Monday both scored four points.

Proviso East completed a season sweep of Willowbrook with Saturday’s win. The Pirates beat the Warriors in Villa Park on Dec. 3.

Willowbrook’s week began with a 49-23 non-conference loss

to Wheaton North at the Coach Kipp’s Hoopfest event in Villa Park on Jan. 20. The Warriors suffered a 53-25 non-conference loss at York on Jan. 22.

Stubblefield leads Warriors to win over Leyden Late dunk puts an exclamation point on 34-point performance

Senior Everett Stubblefield of the Willowbrook boys basketball team completed a memorable and successful evening in style at the end of Friday’s West Suburban Gold Conference game against Leyden.

Stubblefield picked up a loose ball near midcourt and drove to the hoop for a dunk in the closing seconds of the game. Stubblefield’s dunk particularly delighted the Warriors’ large student section.

“Everybody’s been telling me to dunk the ball, so I just had to put a little cherry on top for the fans,” said Stubblefield of his highlight play at the end of the game.

Stubblefield’s dunk capped his 34-point output, which led the Warriors to a 73-63 win over Leyden. Willowbrook moved to 9-14 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Stubblefield opened the week with a 36-point outburst in his team’s 72-60 win over Round Lake at Lake Zurich’s Martin Luther King Tournament on Jan. 20. Two days later, Stubblefield scored 31 points in the Warriors’ conference home game against Proviso East. The visiting Pirates defeated Willowbrook 81-72.

Stubblefield was honored before Friday’s game against Leyden. In late December, he became the third player in the history of the Willowbrook program to score 1,000 points in his varsity career. Minutes before Friday’s tipoff, Stubblefield was presented with a basketball and a banner that noted his achievement.

“It was a special night. I had a decent amount of family come out to support me. It was pretty exciting with the banner and the 1000th-point ball, and we had a good crowd.”

Three Warriors have reached the 1,000-point mark in the last three seasons. Ethan Schuemer, who graduated in 2018, reached the milestone in his senior season. Matas Masys, who graduated in 2019, tallied his 1000th point as a Warrior during his senior season.

Stubblefield made two quick 3-point shots against Leyden to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead. Baskets from Stubblefield and senior Isaac Gaines raised the lead to 10-0 later in the period. The scrappy Eagles cut Willowbrook’s lead to 18-11 by the end of the first quarter. The Warriors held a 37-27 lead at halftime. Stubblefield made five 3-point shots during the first half. He added one more 3-pointer in the second half.

“He’s our guy; he’s our leader; he performs at a high level,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins of Stubblefield. “He came out hot. It was his night. We kind of rode that momentum in the first half.”

“Leyden’s a team that never gives up,” said Stubblefield. “They always fight to the end of the game.”

Senior Sam Tumilty, who made five baskets and sank 10 of 16 free-throw attempts, provided 20 points. Sophomore Sean Paige added seven points.

Senior Deandre Holliday scored five points.

Willowbrook led Proviso East 20-9 after the first quarter of the Jan. 22 meeting in Villa Park. The Warriors’ lead stood at 33-32 at halftime. Proviso East held a 55-49 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Five Proviso East players produced double-digit scoring efforts in the win over the Warriors.

Stubblefield made six shots from 3-point land during his 31-point output against Proviso East. Tumilty, who made three 3-pointers in the first quarter, provided 14 points. Paige accounted for 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Cory Baker scored eight points, while Holliday tallied five points, all of which came during the fourth quarter.

Willowbrook returns to action this Friday when it travels to Addison Trail for a conference game. The Warriors defeated the Blazers 65-42 in the first meeting of the season on Dec. 6.

Boys swimming team second at Shepard Invitational Willowbrook’s Nichols wins breaststroke

Many positives came out of the Jan. 25 Shepard Invitational for the Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op boys swimming team.

AT-Willowbrook took second at the invite in Palos Heights, and coach Neil Wahlgren couldn’t have been more pleased.

“It was a good meet,” he said.

“Guys were swimming their best times, which was good to see. A lot of guys swam well at Shepard.”

Prior to Shepard, AT-Willowbrook dropped a West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest to Hinsdale South on Jan. 24.

“It was a good weekend for us,” said Wahlgren. “We took second at Shepard and although we did lose to Hinsdale South, it was a tight battle where we lost at the end of the meet.”

At Shepard, AT-Willowbrook’s 200 medley relay team took second at the varsity level with Connor Craddock (Addison Trail), Aidan Nichols (Willowbrook), Marco Chaidez (Addison Trail) and Michal Niemirski (Addison Trail) swim-

ming in that group.

Sean Pienkos (Willowbrook) finished second in the 200 freestyle, while Cole McGinnis (Willowbrook) was right behind in third place.

Nichols won the 100 breaststroke.

“That was a huge win for us at this invite,” Wahlgren pointed out.

The meet, Wahlgren noted, also featured a pair of frosh-soph relays in which AT-Willowbrook took first. AT-Willowbrook won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle at the frosh-soph level.

“It shows how good our youth is overall,” he said.

The frosh-soph medley relay included Craddock, Matthew Burrow (Addison Trail), Scott Fitzgerald (Willowbrook) and Niemirski, while the 200 freestyle had Craddock, Burrow, Alexander Dean (Willowbrook) and Niemirski.

Craddock, a freshman, was third in the 100 backstroke, while Pienkos was second in the 500 freestyle.

AT-Willowbrook’s 200 freestyle relay was second, while its B relay in the same event took sixth. The second-place unit featured Nichols, Eric Hoda (Willowbrook), Niemirski and Chaidez.

Chaidez also was sixth in the 100

butterfly.

“A lot of guys are swimming well,” said Wahlgren. “Connor has done really well for us and has been a big help as a freshman. Sean Pienkos and Aidan Nichols are swimming well and Michal Niemirski is putting everything together and is becoming our fastest sprint freestyler. That’s good to see from a sophomore.”

AT-Willowbrook also defeated the Proviso co-op team in a WSC Gold contest held Jan. 17. That victory, coupled with the Hinsdale South loss, put AT-Willowbrook at 3-2 in Gold action.

“It would have been nice to pull off that win against Hinsdale South, but a couple injuries held us back,” Wahlgren noted.

AT-Willowbrook swam against Fenton earlier in the week. The team is preparing for the WSC Gold meet on Feb. 7 at Downers Grove South.

“This past weekend was very strong for us,” said Wahlgren. “We are coming together. The guys are putting in their fastest times and looking good in the water. The leadership has been really good and we have younger guys stepping up.

We’re coming together as a full team.”

Fenton girls basketball team drains 14 3-pointers in win Bison fare well in two recent UEC contests

It was raining 3s for the Fenton girls basketball team in its recent game against Elgin.

The Bison hit 14 three-pointers in a 73-38 Upstate Eight Conference win against the Maroons.

“Fourteen 3s is a season-high for us,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello.

“We played with great pace, crashed the offensive glass and took the shots when they were available. It was the best we had looked on offense since the holiday tournament.”

Fenton also dropped a close 60-57 UEC game in overtime to Glenbard East that put it at 8-15 overall and 2-12 in conference action.

“We fell just short in overtime,” said Mello. “However, when we played them in December, we were flat-out embarrassed by them. They put a running clock on us in the third quarter. In this game, the girls did everything we asked them to do and put forth the most complete effort of the season.

“We were one play away from pulling out the win, but we certainly feel we proved to ourselves just how much we have improved this season.”

Mello said the 3-point shot, a key part of Fenton’s offensive attack, has taken a step forward of late.

“Lately, shooting the three has certainly been our biggest strength,” he said. “We knocked down 14 against Elgin and followed up with 11 against Glenbard East. When we are hitting the 3, it opens up the rest of our offense.

“Our progress on offense has been outstanding the past two games, When we are hitting the 3, it allows us to work the ball inside and it also opens up driving lanes from the perimeter.”

Mello also had high praise for the team’s progress on defense.

“Our defense is really improving,” he said. “Earlier in the season we were getting beat for way too many easy baskets. A slight change in our defense has really helped and the girls have really improved their understanding of the defense.

“We are much improved on defense. We commented after Glenbard East how much the defensive rotations have improved the past couple games. All five girls are working as one unit on defense.”

With the start of the state tournament quickly approaching, Mello noted fine-tuning in practice and games will be critical.

“We can continue to improve in all areas of the game,” he said. “The state tournament is only three weeks away, so we need to have everything in order by then.”

Mello also lauded the work of Fenton’s three seniors: Joni Lucas, Ashley Milano and Becky Millard.

“Our three seniors are really stepping up as they near the end of their time at Fenton,” he said. “Joni, Ashley and Becky are not only leading on the court, but off the court as well.

They are showing all of the young girls what they have picked up the past three seasons and how they want the program to continue to be once they graduate.

“It is great to see three girls who have invested so much in the rebuild of the program working so hard to finish on a high note.”

Fenton played Montini, the state’s No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A, earlier in the week and finishes out the week with games against West Chicago and a trip to Freeport Aquin Saturday for a shootout where it will play Lanark-Eastland, which finished second in the state in Class 1A last year.

“This week will be a lot of fun for us,” said Mello. “Not many teams in our situation would play a team like Montini. However, we have no issue with playing the best. We want the girls to see exactly what needs to be done to perform at the highest level of high school basketball. After playing West Chicago, we play Lanark-Eastland, which has nine returning seniors and is currently ranked in the top-five in the state.

“This is two top-five teams in their respective classes within a four-day span. Just being able to have the girls play in a shootout environment with a lot of top teams is something we are very much looking forward to. We can’t wait.

“As the Glenbard East game showed, we have improved a great amount this season. Our goal every day is to keep improving. We have certainly been doing that. For the remainder of the regular season, we want to make sure we see a lot of different styles of play and are prepared for anything come tourney time.”

The Fenton boys swimming team was a recent 85-58 winner against Elgin in an Upstate Eight Conference meet.

Fenton won the 200 medley relay at the varsity level with a time of 2:21.55 with Paul Sofineti, Nicholas Coker, Joseph Mazariegos and Dante Aviles comprising that group.

Fenton’s Jason Gasior won the 200 freestyle in 2:20.40. Ryan Peterson won the 100 IM at the junior-varsity level with a time of 1:24.97, while Patrick Karbowski was second at 1:25.19.

Brnedon Dal took second in the 200 IM at the varsity level with a time of 2:35.98. Daniel Roucka won the JV 50 free with a time of 33.14, while Gabriel Rodriguez was second at 33.56.

Kasper Widlo won the varsity 50 free in 23.93, while Maciej Sporna was second at 25.70. Sporna also took second in the varsity butterfly

in 1:08.72.

Michael Rogowski won the JV 100 freestyle in 1:19.42, while Roucka was second at 1:20.48.

John Hernandez won the JV backstroke in 39.18 for 50 yards. Monzalvo was second at 44.32. Sofineti was third at the varsity level in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.93.

Peterson won the JV 50 breaststroke in 45.43. Bartnik won the varsity 100-yard backstroke in 1:11.72.

Fenton won the JV 400 relay in 5:11.57 with Monzalvo, Hernandez, Karbowski and Peterson. In Fenton’s varsity 400 relay win, Widlo, Sofineti, Dal and Sporna swam 3:56.37.

Fenton won the JV meet 70-18.

Center for the Arts host ‘Expressions: Art And Verse’ Addison Center for the Arts (ACA) will is present “Expressions: Art and Verse,” a collaborative visual art exhibit and ekphrastic poetry event between the Artists’ Association of Elk Grove Village (AAEGV) and the Illinois State Poetry Society (ISPS), beginning Wednesday, Feb. 12. The exhibition will feature 27 works of art by the AAEGV, as well as poems about each piece written by poets of the ISPS. They are displayed with each of the artworks. The exhibit continues on display at the ACA Gallery through March 13.

53rd annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival begins Feb. 20 The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra and The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra will be among the featured performers at this year’s Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, one of the oldest and best-known collegiate jazz festivals in the country.
