Willowbrook’s boys basketball team won three of four games last week to improve its overall season record to 14-9. The Warriors began the week with a 73-69 victory over Libertyville in the championship game of Lake Zurich High School’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday tournament on Monday, Jan. 17. One night later, the Warriors beat Addison Trail 73-61. Willowbrook extended its winning streak to nine games with last week’s West Suburban Gold Conference win over the Blazers. The Warriors’ winning streak ended with Friday’s 82-74 conference loss at Proviso East. Willowbrook bounced back from Friday’s loss to beat Glenbard East 72-40 in Saturday’s non-conference game in Villa Park. The Warriors led the Rams 27-13 at the end of the first quarter and 54-26 at halftime. Senior Marquel Saleek (above - No. 3) scored all of his team-leading 17 points during the first half. New laws benefit veterans, service members

Recently passed laws to help support veterans across Illinois went into effect Jan. 1.

“Prioritizing our veterans who have given so much for our country is always a top priority,” state Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), a veteran and chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, said. “I’m proud of the bipartisan work conducted during the spring and fall sessions to bring us these new laws to help our military members and veterans thrive in Illinois.”

JOELENE A. LOEW, 88 Joelene A. Loew, (nee Chryst), age 88, of Menomonie, WI, was called to her eternal heavenly home on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, with her family by her side.

Joelene was born Nov. 5, 1933, in Menomonie, WI, to Neil and Hazel Chryst (Adams). She always said she went from cradle to college growing up in Menomonie, attending grade school, high school and graduating with an education degree in home economics from UW-Stout.

Joelene married her college sweetheart, Allan R. Loew, on June 16, 1956, at the Congregational Church in Menomonie. They traveled to North Carolina where Allan served in the Marine Corp and she had the first of their two children, Sue Ellen (Halama) in May 1957. They relocated to Illinois to follow their teaching

Legislation that took effect in the new year includes: • HB 3865: To defend veterans from malicious and deceptive service providers, veteran and military service benefits must be advertised clearly by service providers.

• HB 3716: Starting this year, veterans will be given preference for employment with the Illinois Department of Transportation for snow removal services in the winter.

• HB 2776: To help members of the military stationed in Illinois, the time

frame for an expedited review for professional licenses is now shortened to 30 days from 60 days for service members and their spouses.

“The past year has demonstrated just how easy it can be for those with malicious intent to take advantage of Illinois residents,” state Sen. Mike Hastings (D-Frankfort) said on HB 3865. “It is our obligation to protect our veterans from these nasty scams.”

“Service members and spouses who come to Illinois, but are licensed in another state, should not have to

face lengthy delays when trying to continue in their profession,” state Sen. Christopher Belt (D-Swansea) said on HB 2776. “This legislation is crucial for the men and women who serve our country.”

In 2009 they moved to Sarona, WI, exploring the area and enjoying each day of their retirement. Joelene loved to travel and over the last 25-plus years they traveled to many places together including snow-birding each winter to their home in Florida.

Joelene is survived by her husband, Allan, of Rice Lake, WI, two daughters, Sue (David) Halama of Menomonie, WI and Tammy (Ray) Clarke of Villa Park, IL. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, the “lights of her life”, Michael (Allison) Clarke, Christina (Tom) Spring, Katelyn Halama, and Andrew (Chelsey) Halama, as well as one great-grandchild, 2½ year old Vincent Clarke. She is also survived by her sister Jackie (John) Dotseth of Menomonie, WI, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended fam-

ily.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Neil and Hazel Chryst, her in-laws, Austin and Irene Loew, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Dwayne (Marjorie) Chryst, Dallas (April) Chryst, and Clinton (Connie) Loew.

Funeral services will be private with a memorial and celebration of life service to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that random acts of kindness be shown in Joelene’s memory, remembering always the kindness and compassion she showed to all who knew and loved her.

Roy loved his wife and family dearly. He enjoyed storytelling, eating sweets, and doing woodworking projects for his kids and grandkids.

He took up golfing in his retirement after a long career at Fisher Body.

Roy was a lifetime member of the Villa Park VFW Post 2801.

He is survived by his children Cathy (Steve) Jevne, Mike Ruth, Connie Collins and Deb (Bob) Svoboda, his four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many inlaws.

Roy will be interred at Forest Hill Cemetery in Glen Ellyn. The family will host a memorial in the spring. Arrangements were handled

ROY JOSEPH RUTH, 96 Roy Joseph Ruth passed away on Jan. 15, 2022, at the age of 96. Roy was born on July 9, 1925 in Lombard. He served his country in the Marine Corps 5th Division in World War II and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. He married Mary Eileen Cummings (his beloved “Irish”) in 1948 and they spent 69 years together until

High-flying Warriors finish brilliant week by winning an invitational title Successful week also includes a team score of 138.95 in a win over Addison Trail

The Willowbrook High School girls gymnastics team completed a superb week by winning the team title at Saturday’s Bulldog Invite at Riverside-Brookfield High School.

The Warriors earned a first-place team score of 135.325 at the event, which included nine teams.

The host team from Riverside-Brookfield earned second in the team standings with its total of 130.850.

Senior Bella Naumovsky led Willowbrook to the team title at Saturday’s event by winning the first-place medal in the individual all-around competition with her score of 35.750.

Junior Sarah Ball of the Warriors finished third in the all-around standings with her total of 34.675. Senior Tess Placek of Willowbrook claimed fourth in the all-around standings with her score of 33.90. Junior Hanna Mitrick contributed an all-around total of 30.75, which was good for 17th place.

Naumovsky turned in first-place efforts on the uneven bars (9.1) and balance beam (8.9) at Saturday’s meet. She placed fourth in both the vault (8.85) and floor exercises (8.9).

Ball won the event’s vault competition with her score of 9.4. She also placed third in floor exercises (8.95), sixth on the uneven bars (8.075) and eighth on the balance beam (8.25).

Placek provided the Warriors with second-place performances on the uneven bars (8.3) and the balance beam (8.7). She claimed sixth in floor exercises (8.6) and tied for eighth on the vault (8.3).

Two days later, the Warriors beat Addison Trail 138.95-109.85 in a con-

ference dual meet in Addison. Willowbrook’s total of 138.95 reportedly earned the program’s highest meet score in over 25 years.

The Warriors improved their season dual-meet record to 6-2 with their win over Addison Trail. The victory gave Willowbrook a conference dual-meet record of 4-1.

Naumovsky won the all-around title at the Jan. 20 meet in Addison with her score of 36.65. That total included a first-place performance in floor exercises that received a score of 9.5—a score that tied Willowbrook’s all-time program record in that event.

Naumovsky also posted a firstplace score of 9.3 on the uneven bars in the Jan. 20 meet against the Blazers.

Ball earned the top vault score (9.2) in last week’s meet at Addison Trail. She also delivered a second-place score of 9.35 in floor exercises. She and Placek tied for second on the balance beam with their scores of 8.8.

Mitrick’s first-place effort on the balance beam (8.9) helped the Warriors to their score of 138.95 in Addison. Placek’s contribution to that team total included an 8.5 on the bars, an 8.8 on the balance beam, an 8.65 in floor exercises and an 8.4 on the vault.

Sophomore Mia McBride joined Naumovsky, Ball, Placek and Mitrick in the Warriors’ varsity lineup during last week’s victory at Addison Trail. McBride recorded scores of 8.4 on the vault, 7.7 on the uneven bars, 7.7 on the balance beam and 7.4 in floor exercises for an all-around total of 31.2.

The Warriors will compete in this Saturday’s West Suburban Gold Conference Meet at Downers Grove South.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team won two of three games last week to run its season record to 19-3.

The Warriors finished the week with Friday’s 69-34 West Suburban Gold Conference victory over Addison Trail in Villa Park.

Willowbrook improved its conference record to 10-0 with that win, while Addison Trail fell to 15-8 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Blazers’ only two conference losses have come against the Warriors.

Willowbrook needs to win its last two conference games to post a perfect 12-0 West Suburban Gold record. The Warriors will play a conference home game against Hinsdale South this Friday. Willowbrook will close out the conference season with a Feb. 1 contest at Downers Grove South.

The Warriors began their week with a 58-51 loss to Libertyville at the Coach Derril Kipp’s Hoopfest event at Benet Academy. Willowbrook held a double-digit lead during the second half, but Libertyville overtook the Warriors with a huge fourth-quarter surge.

Willowbrook rebounded from the Jan. 17 setback against Libertyville by earning a 51-46 win at York on Jan. 19. The Warriors overcame a 2923 halftime deficit against the Dukes.

Sophomore Calli Kenny provided a team-leading 19 points for the Warriors in their win over York. She also handed out five assists. Senior Sophie Sullivan supplied 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman Hannah Kenny contributed 10 points and three steals, while sophomore Elle

This is to the people of Villa Park. It has come to my attention that the property which is known as Lions Park is being considered by the board and whoever else is over there, to turn that into a parking lot and an apartment building.

However, please note that that land was given to Villa Park by the Lions Club. It was stipulated that it will be permanently used as a recreational facility that was in the paper. It’s an old paper and it goes back. But if you can, please contact anyone you know over there and let them know that is a permanent park facility. I thank you.

The only project that might be in consideration for use of that land is the community recreation building, and that is still under the board’s review.

Willowbrook outscored the Blazers 18-4 in the third quarter to build a 48-27 lead.

Sullivan, Bruschuk and Calli Kenny each scored 14 points in Friday’s win. Hannah Kenny provided eight points, while junior Nina Nytko scored seven points. Junior Rimon Kari added five points.

“It was close for awhile,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell after Friday’s game. “They [the Blazers] show up spirited against us. Our

girls kind of made an attitude adjustment in the second half. We came out a lot more aggressive in the second half. We played a good second half defensively.”

While disappointed with last week’s loss to Libertyville, Harrell said the game should provide valuable experience for the Warriors in the upcoming post-season.

“We came out in the second half and we played really good defense, and then it was like we hit a wall,” said Harrell of last week’s loss. “Our girls are talented. I think we learned a lot from the game. That will go a long way, especially when we get into the playoffs.”

Great, but after taking out almost half of the increase to pay for the higher Medicare premiums, what little is left will now have to pay for the higher water, gas and electric bills. Well, government, I guess you won’t see much spending power going back into the economy from me and other seniors. And add to that, news reports say that Medicare will not cover the “free” COVID-19 tests being mailed out. Of all the people who need it free the most?

Wait, aren’t the Democrats known for wanting things to be free? Oh, the humanity. *** Are more Illinois residents finally waking up to our state’s ridiculous mask mandate? Drive an hour or two to Wisconsin, Indiana or Iowa. There are no mask mandates there, and people aren’t dropping like flies. COVID-19 is a seasonal virus. It rose and will fall at similar rates in neighboring states, regardless of mask mandates. Wearing a 2-cent blue napkin over your face is useless in stopping COVID-19, but some people are clinging to

Pritzker’s mandate and claiming it’s saving us. I support the idea that’s been proposed that on Feb. 1, we the public are done with all COVID-19 restrictions. *** The need for blood never stops.

In her latest letter, Alice shared a bit of advice about life and this column. When a 97-years-young friend is kind enough to offer guidance based on their own life lessons you should understand it’s high time to listen. I sure did.

Alice suggested that if I was looking for something to write about, I might tackle this credo: “Don’t sweat the small stuff and always think on the positive side.” It’s a mantra that Alice lives by, so it must be a pretty good one. In fact, it’s so good I think I may have heard it before. Writers may have already covered the subject, maybe even in a book.

Still, the words are appropriate and worthwhile to ponder, as I did.

They’ve served Alice for many years and have proven themselves not only enduring but true. I will keep them in mind and think of Alice when I do.

This advice from Alice, while appreciated, was not, for me, the most important part of her letter. That came at the very end, when she told me that if and when she makes it to 100 years old she is going to go for a ride in a hot air balloon.

There’s something about a new year that often has me reflecting on time. I guess that’s fairly natural.

For many of us, January is a time of assessing priorities, setting goals, wrapping up the old year and planning for what’s to come.

This year, those thoughts were punctuated by a note I received in the mail from my friend, Alice, in Ohio, who is a regular reader of this column.

Alice originally reached out to provide kind words of support after the loss of my husband and we became friends. She was 96-yearsold at the time.

Alice has since had a birthday and is currently 97. I hope she doesn’t mind my divulging her age; it should be a source of pride. Not many of us have the opportunity to grace this planet for 97 years—and remain in good health. Alice has managed to do both.

Warriors’ nine-game winning streak ends with an 82-74 loss at Proviso East The Willowbrook boys basketball team completed a busy week with Saturday’s decisive 72-40 win over Glenbard East in Villa Park. The Warriors improved their overall record to 14-9 with the non-conference win over their neighborhood rival from Lombard.

One night before playing the Rams, Willowbrook traveled to Proviso East for a West Suburban Gold Conference battle with the Pirates.

Proviso East defeated the Warriors 82-74. The loss snapped Willowbrook’s nine-game winning streak.

The Warriors began last week’s action by defeating Libertyville 7369 in the championship game of Lake Zurich’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday tournament on Monday, Jan. 17. Willowbrook won all three of its games in the holiday event.

The Warriors pushed their winning streak to nine with a 73-61 conference win at Addison Trail on Jan. 18.

Friday’s loss at Proviso East moved the Warriors’ conference record to 5-2.

Saturday’s game marked the Warriors’ 10th game of January. Willowbrook has won nine of those games, which were played in a span of 19 days. After the Warriors built a 5426 halftime lead over Glenbard East, Willowbrook head coach Chris Perkins rested the team’s starters for the entire second half.

“Ten games in 19 days; that’s a

lot of minutes on those legs,” said Perkins, whose team continues its season with this Friday’s conference game at Hinsdale South.

Senior Noah Campbell and junior Joey Tumilty both scored 21 points in Willowbrook’s win over Libertyville in the title contest of Lake Zurich’s holiday tournament. The Warriors held a 31-28 halftime lead over Libertyville. Willowbrook’s lead stood at 50-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Tumilty’s 21-point output featured five 3-point baskets. He made at least one long-range shot in each quarter and connected on a pair of 3-point attempts during the second period.

Campbell, who drained a 3-point shot in the first half, scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half. He provided five baskets, including a 3-point field goal, in the third quarter. Campbell, who grabbed five rebounds in the game, made two field goals and sank three free throws during the fourth quarter.

Senior Marquel Saleek contributed 12 points and five rebounds in Willowbrook’s win over Libertyville.

Junior Isaac Sobieszczyk provided 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Warriors led Addison Trail 19-8 through one quarter of last week’s conference game in Addison.

Willowbrook led the Blazers 38-27 at halftime and 57-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Campbell provided 20 points in

the Warriors’ victory over their District 88 rival. Saleek added 17 points, while Sobieszczyk delivered nine points and nine rebounds. Senior Terrell Walker contributed nine points.

Proviso East, which beat Willowbrook 75-60 in the championship game of St. Charles East’s Thanksgiving tournament on Nov. 27, held a 39-32 halftime lead over the Warriors in Friday’s conference game.

The Pirates maintained a 62-51 edge at the end of the third quarter.

Campbell scored 22 points in Friday’s loss at Proviso East. Saleek supplied 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Sobieszczyk piled up 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Senior Evan Stubblefield contributed 11 points and six rebounds.

“We came out tonight and tried to get things back on track. Our goal was to try to apply pressure without fouling.
