County board votes down election precincts Members object to lack of outside political influence on clerk’s proposed map

On Friday, Jan. 14, the DuPage County Board failed to pass updated election precincts to meet the legal deadline of Saturday, Jan. 15, leaving in place existing precincts which do not comply with the requirements of state law, according to a release from the county clerk’s office.

On Monday, Nov. 15, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Illinois Public Act 102-0668, which required all county boards to divide their election precincts within 60 days “so that each precinct shall contain, as near as may be practicable, 1,200 registered voters.” The legislation also mandated that “insofar as is practicable, each precinct shall be situated within a single congressional, legislative and representative district and in not more than one county board district and one municipal ward,” and “each

district shall be composed of contiguous territory in as compact form as can be for the convenience of the electors voting therein.”

DuPage County Election Division professional staff worked diligently over the following weeks to draft new precinct boundaries in compliance with the requirements of state law and without political favoritism.

On Wednesday, Jan. 5, ten days before the statutory deadline, county board members were provided the Election Division staff’s recommended precinct maps.

The proposed maps were posted on the DuPage County website for public review and provided directly to the chairs of the DuPage County Democratic and Republican parties.

Since the public distribution of

the maps, the county clerk’s Office has received no negative feedback regarding the compliance of the proposed precincts with the law’s requirements concerning population, electoral district boundaries, or voter convenience. However, at the DuPage County Board’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 11, and again at a special call on Friday, several board members of both parties expressed displeasure that the maps had not been drawn to the specifications of the local political parties to deliberately prevent contested elections for the partisan position of precinct committeeperson.

During floor debate, board members spoke regarding their desire to look out for the interests of the political ground troops who work to elect them. Members stated an in-

tention to vote against the establishment of new election precincts as a protest and openly invited a lawsuit to attempt to force the county board to comply with the requirements signed into law by the Governor.

During a four-hour special meeting called for the sole purpose of establishing the boundaries of DuPage County’s election precincts, the county board voted down the statutorily compliant precinct maps presented by the county clerk by a 10-6 margin.

The county board’s failure to take any action before the legal deadline leaves in place the county’s existing election precincts, which no longer align with the boundaries of congressional and other legislative districts redrawn after the 2020 Census and do not conform with the law’s

requirements regarding precinct size.

“The decision of some DuPage County Board members of both parties to openly defy state law and prioritize politics over voting rights is deeply disappointing,” County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek said. “Precincts exist as an organizational unit for the benefit of the voters, not for politicians. The County Board’s failure to align DuPage County’s election precincts with the boundaries of its representative districts will cause inconvenience and confusion for voters and increase the cost of elections for our taxpayers. Nevertheless, I remain committed to administering DuPage County elections in a fair and non-partisan manner with the interests and rights of our county’s voters as my highest priority.”

Burberry store hit for estimated $23,000 in stolen merchandise, OB police say

According to various news reports, another robbery took place at Oak Brook shopping center, this time at the Burberry store. The estimated loss at the Burberry store is $23,000 in merchandise, which was reportedly taken on Friday, Jan. 14 at about 11:30 a.m.

According to ABC Channel 7

news, three men described to be in their 20s broke in and removed the merchandise, then escaped in a black BMW with tinted windows. Oak Brook police told ABC-7 and other news outlets that patrols have been stepped up at the mall and surrounding area effective immediately due to the increased crime of late.

According to its facebook page, the Oak Brook Police Department

is actively working on what they called a “grab and run” incident at the Burberry store. They indicated there was video surveillance which captured the suspects and the vehicle in which they fled. Oak Brook Police are working with the Oak Brook shopping center management and the retail merchants “to address and reduce these incidents, including the use of technology to magnify these 410228

enforcement efforts,” the facebook post read.

The Independent published a story in its Jan. 6th issue about a shootout that took place between two Chicago men right in the midst of holiday shopping at Oak Brook Center.

In November, there was a robbery at the Louis Vuitton store, where police said about $100,000 in merchandise had been taken, according

to ABC-7 news.

Stores also burglarized in downtown Chicago On Thursday, Jan. 6, the Burberry store on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago was also burglarized for the second time. Chicago police told ABC-7 news that at about 4:45

State Sen. Tom Cullerton of Villa Park (D-District 23), who was indicted in August, 2019 on embezzlement charges, has had his trial postponed once again.

The trial was scheduled to get under way Feb. 23, but has been delayed due to scheduling issues related to COVID-19. The Chicago Tribune reported that U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman has set a tentative new trial date for April.

This marks the third postponement of the trial since the indictment was issued. In April, 2021, a federal judge set Cullerton’s trial for

Feb. 23 in the U.S. District Court in Chicago. Originally, his trial was set for July 2020, but it never got under way because of COVID-19, which put a stop to all jury trials.

According to a Capitol News Illinois story published in the May 6, 2021, issue of the Villa Park Review, Cullerton has pleaded not guilty to all the federal embezzlement charges issued in August, 2019, which includes 39 counts of embezzlement from a labor union, one count of conspiracy to embezzle from a labor union and employee benefit plans, and one count of making false statements in a health care

manner.

According to the same story, the indictment alleges Cullerton embezzled $274,066 from the union between January 2013 and February 2016 ($188,320 in salary and allowances, $64,068 in medical and pension plan contributions and $21,678 in “reimbursed medical claims”).

Additionally, the indictment alleges Cullerton received holiday bonuses for three years and collected around $60,000 from Jan. 15, 2015 through the end of January, 2016.

According to the indictment, Cullerton reported the additional income in a statement of economic

interests form with the secretary of state’s office, as required by state law, in 2013 and 2014, but not in 2015 or 2016.

Cullerton has denied any wrongdoing.

Cullerton was elected to his third term in the state Senate in 2018. He served as Villa Park village president from 2009 to 2013 and was a village trustee from 2005 to 2009.

The 23rd District includes all or parts of Villa Park, Addison, Wood Dale, Bloomingdale, Bartlett, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Itasca, Roselle, West Chicago and Wayne.

ARTHUR H. STILLWELL, JR., 79 Arthur Henry Stillwell, Jr., age 79, of Lake James, Fremont, Indiana, formerly of Villa Park, passed away peacefully at his home, on Saturday, January 8, 2022, with his family by his side.

He was born on January 5, 1943, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Arthur Henry and Ann Marie (Detloff) Stillwell.

Art married Wanda Galyean on December 17, 1975. in Wheaton, Illinois.

He was a police officer the for Villa Park, Illinois Police Department for 32 years, retiring in 2005.

Art was a longtime resident on Lake James, building his home on Lake James with many of his friends’ help.

He enjoyed boating, water skiing, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda “Dolly” Stillwell of Lake James,

Motorcycle Lions Club holds toy drive for Tri-Town YMCA

Over this early winter season, District 1-J (D1J) Motorcycle Lions Club will collect new and gently used board games, card games, decks of cards, sports equipment, stuffed animals, larger children’s toys, scooters and children’s bicycles for Tri-Town YMCA, which serves the greater Lombard, Villa Park, and Oakbrook Terrace regions of eastern DuPage County.

As a 501(c)(3) charity, Tri-Town YMCA works hand-in-hand with caring community donors to ensure that their programs are accessible to all through fee assistance, which is available on a sliding scale according to ability to pay. Its programs place a major emphasis on encouraging and supporting young people in their development, strengthening family ties and promoting individual health and fitness.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is urging residents to continue to take action to protect themselves and the community against the spread of COVID-19.

This is the result of significant increases in COVID-19 cases and related hospitalizations in DuPage County, and across the U.S. Being up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, including a booster dose, is the best way to protect yourself against severe illness and death from COVID-19. Everyone age 12 and older is now recommended to receive a vaccine booster.

As of Jan. 11, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 17,063 COVID-19 cases in DuPage County over the last 7 days, which represents an increase of 66 percent from the previous week.

There were also 444 new hospital admissions in DuPage County related to COVID-19 illness, which represents a 3 percent increase (or 13 additional patients) since Jan. 4. Positivity rates have also been steadily rising and are now at 20 percent.

In the past week, there have been 23 deaths due to COVID-19 in DuPage County.

Those who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 continue to remain at a consistently higher risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and COVID-19 related deaths. Over 88 percent of all deceased COVID-19 cases in DuPage County since December 15, 2020, occurred in persons not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Recently, CDC updated their recommendation for when people can receive their booster shot, shortening their interval from 6 months to 5 months for those who received the primary series of Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

CDC has also expanded the eligibility of Pfizer booster doses to those 12 to 15 years old. Additionally, consistent with their prior recommendation for adults, CDC is recommending that moderately or severely immunocompromised 5- to 11-yearolds receive an additional primary dose of vaccine 28 days after their second shot.

DuPage County Health Department is now offering appointments for 12- to 15-year-olds to receive their COVID-19 booster shots.

DCHD COVID-19 booster shots are available at the Central Public Health Center in Wheaton and through the Care Van COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

Individuals should be considered for outpatient therapy for COVID-19 if they are symptomatic with mild-moderate COVID-19 illness and have a positive SARS-CoV-2 viral test result, and are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19 illness and/or hospitalization. DCHD encourages healthcare providers to stay up to date on COVID-19 outpatient treatment guidelines.

On Oct. 20, 2019, at approximately 2:47 a.m., Rodea-Cruz was driving alone in his vehicle northbound on Route 83 in the southbound lanes just north of 55th Street in Clarendon Hills. While driving on the wrong side of the road, Rodea-Cruz crashed his car head-on into a southbound vehicle with four passengers.

Two of the southbound vehicle’s passengers, Marko Boskovic, 27, of Revere, Mass., and Laura Uribe, 26, of La Grange, died at a local hospital as a result of their injuries.

was severely injured while another 27-year-old male received treatment for his injuries and was released. The two surviving victims are both from Massachusetts.

After the crash, officers found Rodea-Cruz alone in his vehicle with numerous opened and unopened bottles of beer as well as a broken 750 ml bottle of liquor. He was taken into custody at this time and appeared in bond court the following morning.

Warriors run winning streak to seven games Willowbrook picks up conference wins over Morton and Leyden before closing the week with an 88-87 victory over Lindblom

The Willowbrook boys basketball team maintained its unblemished January record by winning three games last week. The Warriors began the week by posting West Suburban Gold Conference home wins over Morton and Leyden. Willowbrook then earned a thrilling 88-87 victory over Chicago’s Lindblom Math and Science Academy in Saturday’s game at Lake Zurich’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday tournament.

Saturday’s win pushed the Warriors’ winning streak to seven games and propelled the team into Monday’s championship game at Lake Zurich’s event. Willowbrook faced Libertyville in Monday’s title contest.

The Warriors improved their overall record to 11-8 with Saturday’s victory. Last week’s wins over Morton and Leyden raised Willowbrook’s conference mark to 4-1.

The Warriors opened last week’s action with a 64-49 conference win over Morton on Jan. 11. The victory avenged a 66-64 loss at Morton on Dec. 11.

Willowbrook led the Mustangs 23-11 through one quarter of last week’s game in Villa Park. Morton cut the Warriors’ lead to 35-28 by halftime. Willowbrook bumped its lead to 49-39 by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Terrell Walker provided a team-leading 23 points for the Warriors in last week’s win over Morton. Walker tallied eight points through the first three quarters. He then scored all 15 of Willowbrook’s fourth-quarter points.

Walker made 10 of 12 attempts from the field during the game. He converted three of six shots from the free-throw line.

Senior Marquel Saleek contributed 13 points and seven assists in last week’s victory over the Mustangs.

Willowbrook’s winning streak continued with Friday’s 70-63 conference win over Leyden.

The Warriors led Leyden 22-16 through one quarter of Friday’s conference matchup in Villa Park. The Eagles delivered a strong effort in the second quarter to take a 33-31 halftime lead. Leyden grabbed the halftime edge by sinking a long 3-point shot as the buzzer sounded to end the second quarter.

Willowbrook outscored the Eagles 17-12 in the third quarter to take a 48-45 lead with eight minutes to play.

Sobieszczyk carried the Warriors’

offensive load during the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. His three-point play gave Willowbrook a 51-45 lead with 7:28 left in the game.

About one minute later, Sobieszczyk grabbed an offensive rebound and made an inside basket to push the lead to 53-45. He delivered a similar effort—pulling down a rebound and making an inside shot—to give the Warriors a 55-47 lead with about 5:25 remaining.

Baskets from Walker and Tumilty helped Willowbrook to a 59-51 advantage. Campbell’s driving basket boosted the lead to 62-55 with a 2:10 to play. The Eagles scored two straight baskets to reduce the Warriors’ lead to 62-59.

Sobieszczyk’s second three-point play of the fourth quarter raised Willowbrook’s lead to 65-59 with 38.6 seconds on the clock.

Campbell made a pair of free

throws with 27.5 seconds to play.

Saleek added two free throws with 12.5 seconds remaining. Tumilty scored the game’s final point by making a free throw with 1.2 seconds to play.

Sobieszczyk scored 11 of his team-leading 16 points during the fourth quarter. He also grabbed nine rebounds during the game. Campbell provided 15 points and eight rebounds, while Saleek scored 12 points. Walker contributed 10 points.

Stubblefield and Tumilty scored nine and eight points, respectively.

“We had a lot of guys step up,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins after Friday’s win. “We had a balanced attack and we needed every bit of it. Leyden was very scrappy and disciplined.”

Campbell scored the first eight points of Saturday’s game against Lindblom to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead. Willowbrook held a 26-10 edge at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors’ lead shrunk to 45-42 by halftime. Lindblom grabbed a 67-63 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Alex Simmons delivered the final points of a wild fourth quarter when he stepped to the foul line with four-tenths of a second on the clock. Simmons made both free throws to lift the Warriors to their 8887 victory.

Saleek scored 30 points in Saturday’s win to set the Warriors’ new season-high for points in a game.

Saleek scored 29 points in a win over St. Charles East in November, while Campbell poured in 29 points in an overtime loss to Deerfield in December.

Saleek also pulled down 10 rebounds in Saturday’s exciting onepoint win. Campbell, who made three of six shots from 3-point range, added 22 points. Simmons and Sobieszczyk both scored 11 points.

Walker contributed 10 points.

In addition to Monday’s tournament title game in Lake Zurich, the Warriors’ busy schedule this week includes conference contests at Addison Trail and Proviso East, as well as this Saturday’s non-conference home game against Glenbard East.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team won two of three games last week to improve its overall season record to 17-2. The Warriors moved to 9-0 in West Suburban Gold Conference play with last week’s victories over Morton and Proviso East.

Willowbrook’s week also included a non-conference loss at Nazareth Academy.

The Warriors opened the week with a 64-31 win at Morton on Jan.

11. Willowbrook led the Mustangs 18-4 after one quarter and 36-13 at halftime. The lead grew to 52-19 by the end of the third quarter.

Sophomore Calli Kenny made seven of nine shots from the field and scored a team-leading 15 points for the Warriors in last week’s win over Morton. She made her only 3-point attempt of the game.

Senior Sophie Sullivan added 13 points, while junior Sara Stout provided eight points. Sophomore Elle Bruschuk and junior Rimon Kari added seven and six points, respectively.

The Warriors trailed Nazareth 14-8 after one quarter of the Jan. 13 contest between two of the area’s top teams. The Roadrunners’ lead stood

at 24-16 at halftime and 36-25 by the end of the third quarter.

Calli Kenny scored 15 points and hauled in 11 rebounds in the loss to Nazareth. Sullivan provided nine points and four rebounds. Bruschuk supplied six points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Hannah Kenny added six points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Warriors led Proviso East 28-13 through one quarter of Saturday’s conference game in Villa Park.

Willowbrook led the Pirates 42-20 at halftime and 61-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Gerrymanderers invade your local courthouse

By Jim Nowlan When the political party in power draws new district lines to increase its share of seats and squeeze the other party into irrelevancy, it is called gerrymandering.

That is what Illinois Democrats did this past year with congressional and state legislative districts.

To celebrate the new year, Democrats went further, taking a step way too far, across the line.

They invaded your local courthouse to gerrymander the way judges are elected, by creating new subdistricts that will elect more judges from their party and fewer from the Republican side.

Lady Justice, the maiden from ancient Greece who holds the scales of justice in her hand, where the evidence can be weighed fairly and honestly for all to see, would not be happy. You see, the Greeks, the Romans, indeed our nation’s founders held the judiciary to be, at least ideally, apart from and independent of the rough and tumble of partisan politics.

Not in Illinois, where Democratic partisanship has dominated the courts for decades, from the Illinois Supreme Court, now all the way down to your local judge.

Let me illustrate with what has been wrought in Madison County (it may be even worse elsewhere in Illinois), where friends there alerted me to the situation. With more than a quarter-million residents nestled along the Mississippi River, across from St. Louis, Madison County was long a Democratic stronghold. Indeed, 17 of the present 21 circuit and associate judges in the county are Democrats.

But the county has been trending Republican in the past decade.

Democrats are worried they may soon lose their slim 5-4 majority of circuit judges, who appoint the associates.

So, in this new year, without any public hearings or significant discussion in legislative committee, Democrats imposed on Madison and other mid-size counties across Illinois new subcircuits for judges, which will protect and enhance Democrat judgeships.

For Madison County, the Democrats in Springfield (from Chicago and Cook County, actually) added a unique wrinkle, which almost

guarantees the first three new judges to be elected to fill retirements will be Democrats. This would guarantee their party’s dominance long into what otherwise may well be a Republican future.

Playing politics with the courts is not healthy for democracy. In fact, the chief administrative officer of the Illinois Supreme Court sent a memo to her justices that called the new local court redistricting “an unmitigated disaster.”

First, the Democrats reached into the judiciary to play partisan games simply because, giddy with power, they could! Dems holds more than two-thirds of the state senate seats and almost as big a fraction in the House.

Indeed, this dominance results largely from gerrymandering a decade ago, which exaggerates statewide political party divisions.

Second, the Illinois Supreme Court itself was gerrymandered in 1962 to all but guarantee a Democratic majority on that court, which has been the case unbroken until 2020. In that year, however, the Democrats lost their elected majority on the state high court. So, what did the legislature do?

You’re right; they gerrymandered the state high court districts last year, in hopes of regaining their majority.

With shameless duplicity, Democratic leaders say they have created new subcircuits so that judges will represent communities of interest.

This flies in the face, of course, of the new gerrymandered congressional and state legislative districts, which are often shaped like slithering snakes, communities be damned. One small Illinois city is shattered into four different state senate districts!

Communities of interest—balderdash!

I appreciate that to the average voter, busy with trying to make a buck and rear a family during the disrupting pandemic, this matter is political inside baseball of the highest order, and almost impossible to follow.

Yet those of us who know about this travesty must protest. Our courts are too important.

Lady Justice would not be smiling.

The ABCs of making ’22 your best ’22

Turning the calendar over to a new year is often a time of reflection, not only to look backward but also to look ahead. What can happen to make the future bigger and brighter?

The past year has been overflowing with lessons for my life. It’s been a year of change and challenges, struggles and success. Simply put, I’ve learned a lot—about myself and the world.

I like to play with words and decided it might be fun to put together an ABC guide encompassing some of the eurekas I’ve experienced that might help create a bigger and better 2022 for us all.

Some of the things 2021 taught me: Allow yourself grace when you make a mistake. Allow others the same grace when they mess up.

Appreciate everything else.

Breathe. When the day is long and the road seems steep, take a break and just breathe—in and then out.

If you have to take it one breath at a time, you are still breathing, and that’s something.

Compassion builds bridges while indifference tears them down. Build bridges.

Don’t take things for granted.

It puts you on autopilot. Do pay attention. It puts you in line to see the beauty that surrounds and encompasses you. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Comparisons minimize your uniqueness. Do be authentically and unapologetically you.

Endings often have to happen for beginnings to occur.

Fulfillment comes from within.

The world we live in is a beautiful and abundant place. We may be fortunate enough to have loving friends and family in abundance, but we can’t be

There are too many Democrats and too many Republicans and not enough Americans. The politicians, our socalled leaders, will not end their conduct. We must end it and say stop. *** So the Republicans are blaming the Dems for the riot on Jan. 6, 2021?

We know that is false. Will they now blame the Dems for the five states that sent in false/forged election results to Washington? The signatures will now be the end for these signers and hopefully they will all go to jail. *** Biden got it right when he said democracy is in danger one year after Jan. 6. It certainly is, thanks to his policies which are destroying this country. His 33 percent approval rating is well deserved. *** If there’s a silver lining about COVID, it’s that we apparently have eradicated the common cold and the flu in our lifetime. Everything that used to be associated with a cold or the flu—such as sore throat, a cough, a runny nose, congestion, a fever, the chills and nausea—are now all symptoms of COVID. *** I just read Congressman Raja’s latest column (Jan. 13 issue). Blah, blah, blah. More regressive leftist drivel.

Raja always talks about how he goes on CNN to be interviewed, so it’s no surprise he refers to what happened on Jan. 6 as an insurrection—just like CNN does. Over 700 people have been charged with crimes resulting from Jan. 6. No one has the right to storm into the U.S. Capitol building, and I fully support that they were arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But Raja, CNN and the regressive left still continue to label this an insurrection even though none of the over 700 has been charged with insurrection. It just goes to show you that if you repeat a lie

long enough, people will believe it. *** “I’m going to shut down the virus.”

We are deep in debt and one of the highest taxed states in the country and things are getting worse. So what will be the response of the people of Lombard and Villa Park and the rest of the state in November? My guess is that it will be the usual response: Vote for the Democrats! Insanity has been defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. By that definition, most of the people in this state have lost their minds. *** This is for the person (last week) praising the Democrats who gave us Social Security, which will be bankrupt in a couple of years because the government has spent the funds and left IOUs for the taxpayers. Then there’s unemployment insurance, which has lost billions of dollars to fraud, with no accountability. Medicare is ripe with fraud and abuse. And there’s Obamacare, which mandates we have coverage for everything, including pregnancy when we are older and don’t need all these coverages.

All of this increases the premiums for those not on Obamacare. Let’s throw in there Amtrak and the post office— two more agencies run by and subsidized by the government that lose billions every year. Any program the government runs is not good. *** I heard Governor Billionaire has been mentioned as a candidate for president. I hope he runs so more people across the country will find

out how he’s ruined Illinois. He wouldn’t last long in the primaries, anyway. *** I feel bad for the people who have shelled out money to get the at-home COVID-19 tests. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that the free at-home COVID-19 tests aren’t forthcoming, but just look at the shelves in any retail or grocery store; many bare spots and limited items.

President Biden said he is authorizing free tests to be distributed, but too little, too late as far as I’m concerned. When Craig Melvin from the “Today Show” asked Vice President Harris why these tests weren’t given out sooner, her response was first to say that they have been ordered, and also she said, “We’re doing it.” Yeah, and Christmas is coming. Biden’s approval rating is at 33 percent and Harris’ is at between 40 and 44 percent, depending on which source you look at. So, Democrats, do you still have confidence in these people you elected to office? *** This month marks the 85th anniversary of the devastating Ohio River flooding of 1937. Heavy rains in January and February of 1937 caused extensive flooding from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Ill. The flooding reportedly killed 385 people, left about one million people homeless and caused damage of about $500 million—a massive amount in the midst of the Great Depression. I have seen some video of the flooding. I haven’t seen any clips of politicians or activists running around in 1937 screaming about “climate change.” If there was such a flood today, you know the politicians and activists would be racing to get in front of cameras. Unfortunately, one thing that helps them is that so many people seem oblivious to history. Uninformed people think every modern-day, severe-weather event is unprecedented. *** Here’s a reasonable proposal: I will continue to wear a mask in public if people who voted for Biden will wear a dunce cap in public. *** How comical is it to hear COVID cases still referred to as “breakthrough” cases? There are thousands of cases among vaccinated people. *** Who’s Brandon and where is he going? *** Work brings purpose and activity into your life. The only difference between work and fun is one you get paid for and the other you don’t. *** The Democrats and socialists seem to have combined parties and won the war on elections, and America seem to have lost the war on its future.

Friday night crosstown game to salute 50 years of Title IX Former coaches, athletes from Addison Trail, Willowbrook invited on Jan. 21

On Friday, Jan. 21, Willowbrook High School will host Addison Trail for a Crosstown varsity girls basketball game to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. School officials announced that former coaches and student-athletes from both high schools have been invited to attend, especially those who participated in or coached girls ath-

letic teams at either high school.

Title IX is a federal civil rights law in the U.S. that was passed in 1972 to prohibit sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives funding from the federal government. The law has helped increase access and equality for female athletes.

A pre-game social will take place

at 6:30 p.m. and alumni will be announced during halftime. At the game, Addison Trail alumni are encouraged to dress in green to signify hope, while Willowbrook grads are urged to wear purple to indicate dignity.

Driver Services facilities to reopen Jan. 24, 25

Out of an abundance of caution and due to the continued high numbers of new COVID-19 cases statewide, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is announcing that all Secretary of State departments–including Driver Services facilities–will resume conducting in-person transactions Monday, Jan. 24. The Secretary of State offices and facilities first closed on Jan. 3, due to the surge in COVID-19 cases statewide. Driver Services facilities operating on a Tuesday–Saturday schedule will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

“After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to extend the closures of offices and Driver Services facilities an additional week, with a re-

opening date set for Monday, Jan. 24, due to the continued high number of COVID-19 cases,” said White. “The health and safety of employees and the public remains my top priority, and face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus.

“We are pleased to see what appears to be the beginning of a downswing in COVID-19 cases and, if this trend continues, we will reopen Jan. 24 for face-to-face transactions.”

White noted that three Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) facilities have reopened for in-person CDL services only. The CDL facilities are: Rockford at 4734 Baxter

Willowbrook’s varsity and junior-varsity lineups competed at the Plainfield South Invitational on Jan. 8.

The varsity placed eighth out of 18 teams. Porro led the Warriors to

their eighth-place showing in the team results by finishing second in the event’s individual standings with her six-game total of 1,272.

The Warriors’ junior-varsity squad placed second out of nine teams at Plainfield South’s invite.

Sophomore Annabelle Thompson rolled a 1,026 series to finish fourth in the individual standings.

Senior Amia Jackson fired a series score of 910 to land in 10th place.

The Willowbrook High School Speech Team competed in its home tournament last month. The Willowbrook team finished in fourth place out of 20 participating schools in the Dec. 11 event, which had a “Muppets” theme. Willowbrook’s top performers at the tournament included: senior Katherine Wentworth, who won the second-place medal in Dramatic Interpretation and teamed with senior Damian Rocha to place fourth in Dramatic Duet Acting; senior Elizabeth Michael, who earned the second-place medal in Original Comedy; and senior Emily Maher, who placed third in Impromptu Speaking and fifth in Prose Reading. The duo of sophomore Sophia Marino and freshman Frank Mendez advanced to the finals in Humorous Duet Acting. Willowbrook’s tandem of junior Amelia Tortorici and sophomore Sean O’Brochta placed fifth in the same category.
