Commission presents its Holiday Decorating Awards The Villa Park Community F.U.N. (Focus on Unifying Neighbors) Commission recently announced the winners of its Holiday Decorating Awards. The winner of the Traditional Award is the Roscoe family of the 100 block of South Michigan Avenue (bottom right). The winners of the Colorful Award are the Doyle (left) and Davis (bottom left) families of the 500 block of North Chatham Avenue. The two families, who live across the street from each other, were both honored for their “Dueling Griswold Houses.”

The Community F.U.N. Commission (formerly known as the Community Pride Commission) recognized the winners at this week’s Villa Park Village Board meeting. Additionally, the commission presented a special Community Spirit Award to Vito and Carine Alfano and their son Jackson. The Alfano family responded after Christmas trees along the Illinois Prairie Path were vandalized in Villa Park in late November.

The Alfanos, who moved to the village seven years ago, did not have a tree along the path.

But after learning of the senseless act of vandalism, they spent a cold Sunday re-staking and repositioning dozens of Christmas trees to beautify the scenery along the path for the rest of the holiday season.

Applications for DuPage Foundation’s Community Needs Grant Program due March 4 The DuPage Foundation is now accepting applications for the spring, 2022, cycle of its Community Needs Grant Program (Community Needs), open to DuPage County not-for-profit organizations working in the field of health and human services that sup-

port programs aligned with current Impact DuPage health and human needs priorities: affordable housing, behavioral health and health status improvement.

The Foundation’s 2022 grant guidelines are posted at dupagefoun-

dation.org/cngp and include application instructions and eligibility requirements. Applications are due by 5 p.m. March 4.

DuPage Foundation’s Community Needs Grant Program supports programs and projects that improve and

enrich the quality of life for DuPage County residents. During two grant cycles each year, applications are accepted from local not-for-profits serving the DuPage County community in the following areas: health and human services; education; arts and culture; environment; and animal welfare.

Health and human services grants are awarded each spring, and the other four categories are awarded in the fall.

To be eligible to apply, not-forprofit organizations must primarily serve DuPage County residents and be public charities classified as exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. First-time applicants are encouraged to review the Foundation’s grant guidelines and contact Barb Szczepaniak, vice president for programs, at 630-598-5280 or barb@ dupagefoundation.org to confirm eligibility before applying.

All applications are reviewed by the Foundation’s volunteer Grant Committee comprised of DuPage County residents with deep knowledge of the not-for-profit community.

“Going into this spring cycle of community needs, we are expecting to see many grant requests that are directly related to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Szczepaniak.

“The pandemic amplified the growing needs of our community and some not-for-profits are still struggling to provide essential health services due to increased demand. We are immensely grateful to our donors who not only make this program possible, but have the desire to see more impact in their communities by partnering with the Foundation.”

Illinois records pandemic high of more than 200,000 COVID cases in one week Hospitalizations, deaths spike as omicron variant spreads

The Illinois Department of Public Health said Jan. 7 that the state had recorded 201,428 new cases of COVID-19 over the previous week, a 57 percent increase over the previous week, while the weekly number of deaths rose 15 percent, to 444 as the omicron variant of the virus continues to spread.

Those cases were confirmed out of more than 1.3 million laboratory tests performed over the previous week, which brought the preliminary statewide case positivity rate to 15.2 percent.

Those case counts are the highest of any since the pandemic began, according to IDPH data, although the death rate is well below the pandemic peak of a year ago.

That brings the total number of cases since the pandemic began to just under 2.4 million, including 28,361 deaths.

The rising case rate in Illinois has prompted the General Assembly to cancel all of its scheduled session days this week, according to spokespeople for Senate President Don Harmon and House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, although committees in both chambers will continue to meet remotely.

As of late Thursday night, Jan. 6, IDPH reported 7,096 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, including 1,123 patients in intensive care units and 639 on ventilators.

Those cases account for 38 percent of all staffed ICU beds available and 11.5 percent of all staffed ventilators.

IDPH continues to advise people that vaccines are the strongest defense against the virus. As of Thursday night, Jan. 6, more than 19.5 million vaccinations had been administered. Over the past week, 294,687 doses were administered, for an average of 42,098 per day.

Currently, 73 percent of the state’s total population has received at least one dose of vaccine, while 64 percent are fully vaccinated and 40 percent have received a booster shot.

Placek honored with 88’s Best award for December

Willowbrook High School senior Tess Placek was recently named her school’s recipient of the 88’s Best award for the month of December.

Placek was recognized during the District 88 Board of Education’s Dec. 13 meeting. The 88’s Best honor recognizes students for their achievements in and out of the classroom. The award is presented to nine students at each of District 88’s two schools— Willowbrook and Addison Trail—each school year.

Willowbrook Principal Dan Krause noted during the recent board meeting that Placek is an accomplished student, artist and athlete. When she graduates from Willowbrook later this year, Placek will have completed nine Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses, as well as a multitude of honors courses. Placek has earned Distinct Honor Roll status during each semester of her four years at Willowbrook. She is an inductee of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the World Language Honor Society and Willowbrook’s social studies honor society—Civitas.

Placek has been recognized as an Illinois State Scholar and a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. Additionally, she serves as a New Beginnings mentor to help Willowbrook freshmen with the transition to high school. She’s also been a student ambassador for blood drives and Feed My Starving Children.

An accomplished artist, Placek has regularly earned recognition at school and local art shows.

She’s also a member of Willowbrook’s band, and a standout member of Willowbrook’s girls gymnastics team.

Krause stated during the Dec. 13 meeting that Placek is interested in studying biology, and has been accepted to the University of Oklahoma and Indiana University.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police James Kruger have announced that bond has been set for two Chicago men accused of opening fire at the Oak Brook Mall two days before Christmas.

Tyran Williams, 32, and Steven Lane, 29, each appeared at a bond hearing where bond was set in the amount of $1 million with 10 percent to apply for each man.

Williams has been charged with five counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm (Class 1 felony) and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon (Class 3 felony). Lane has been charged with one count of aggravated battery—discharge of a

In 1995, one woman’s observation led to what is now an important mission of People’s Resource Center (PRC): helping adults who want to learn—or improve—their English-speaking skills.

This past fall, and close to home, the non-profit agency partnered with the Villa Park Public Library to offer a practical English class on Tuesdays (10-11:30 a.m.) and a conversational English “circle” on Wednesdays (1011 a.m.).

According to Morgan Abate, PRC grants manager, the origins of PRC go back as far as 1966, when “a group of people who cared about the community” got together in Wheaton to help the less fortunate in the area.

Later, in 1975, Dorothy McIntyre became the PRC executive director, when the agency began handing out food from a house window on Illinois Avenue in Wheaton.

The second executive director, Mary Ellen Durbin, saw a need to offer English as a Second Language (ESL) opportunities, she narrated, and became “the driving force” in starting an ESL program in 1995, with the idea that the clients coming for assistance would “need to know English” in order to find work and other opportunities.

The agency grew to add adult literacy programming, besides ESL classes, in such areas as computer/ digital literacy, math, citizenship preparation, studying for high school equivalency tests, one-on-one tutoring and applying for employment, among other assistance. Individuals can also take classes to learn Spanish.

Abate said PRC held classes onsite both at the Wheaton site and in Westmont. PRC partnered with Alliance Church in Westmont from 2001-08 and when the need for food assistance grew, the agency rented space, where it offered a food pantry

firearm (Class X felony), four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm (Class 1 felony) and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (Class 4 felony).

On Dec. 23 at approximately 5:44 p.m., officers with the Oak Brook Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at the Oak Brook Mall.

Upon their arrival, officers found four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

One of the individuals, later identified as Williams, had been shot four times. It is alleged that officers found a Glock 9 mm handgun near Williams as they began to treat his gunshot wounds. Following an investigation into the shooting, led by the Oak Brook Police Department, it is alleged that Williams and Lane were in a verbal altercation when both men pulled out a handgun and began shooting at each other.

It is alleged that during the incident, both Lane and Williams fired their weapons resulting in Williams being struck four times and four innocent bystanders being struck by gunfire.

It is further alleged that after the shooting Lane fled the scene. Lane was taken into custody at the mall a short time later following a brief foot pursuit by a Nordstrom loss prevention officer and an Oak Brook police officer.

A Taurus G2C 9 mm handgun was also found near the Nordstrom store where Lane was running after the shooting. Williams was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. He was released from the hos-

pital into police custody on Dec. 27.

The innocent bystanders who were shot were also transported to a local hospital for medical attention. None of their injuries were life-threatening and they have all been released from medical care. When processing the scene, authorities found twelve fired 9 mm shell casings.

“The allegations that these two men opened fire in a crowded mall of between 15,000 to 20,000 people, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year are evidence of an unconscionable degree of violence and a complete and utter disregard for public safety,” Berlin said. “Make no mistake, in DuPage County public safety is our top priority and anyone who commits this type of violent crime in DuPage County will be apprehended, charged and, if found guilty, face a significant amount of time behind bars.

“We are all extremely grateful that the injuries sustained by the four innocent victims do not appear to be life-threatening and that they are all on the mend. I thank all the law enforcement agencies involved in this situation for their assistance. Within minutes, hundreds of police officers from across the county descended on the mall and quickly brought a chaotic situation under control.”

“On Dec. 23, members of the Oak Brook Police Department performed heroic actions running toward gunfire that not only placed, what we came to learn, the perpetrators in custody but also took immediate lifesaving action to save the life of one of the defendants,” Kruger said. “Words

cannot describe the amount of pride I have for our officers and for law enforcement as we received a tremendous amount of support from surrounding agencies who selflessly responded to our call for assistance.”

“I want to start by thanking our first responders for a massive response to the Oak Brook Mall during this stressful and violent incident,” DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick said. “We never know how something like this is going to turn out while we’re on our way. Chief Kruger and State’s Attorney Berlin have made this process as efficient as possible. I also commend the silent heroes behind the scenes on this case—members of our DuPage County Crime Laboratory, led by Claire Dragovich, who came to work on the shortest of notice during a holiday to solve this case.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team improved to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the West Suburban Gold Conference with last week’s pair of conference wins. Playing their first game of 2022, the Warriors beat Downers Grove South 61-29 on Friday in Villa Park. One day later, Willowbrook earned a 72-35 victory at Leyden.

The Warriors completed the first half of their conference season with Friday’s game against Downers Grove South. Willowbrook led the Mustangs 17-7 after one quarter and 39-14 at halftime. The Warriors’ lead stood at 48-24 at the end of the third quarter.

Senior Sophie Sullivan made four shots from 3-point range and scored 15 points for Willowbrook in Friday’s win. Sullivan delivered her first 3-point basket of the game during the opening quarter. She added two more 3-point baskets in the second quarter and made one more long-range shot in the third quarter.

Sophomore Calli Kenny, who made one 3-point shot and sank all four of her attempts from the freethrow line, scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sophomore Elle Bruschuk provided eight

points and a team-leading 15 rebounds. Junior Sara Stout contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

Freshman Hannah Kenny added five points and six rebounds. Junior Rimon Kari provided three points.

Sophomore Eliza Ramey scored three points by connecting on a 3-point shot in the fourth quarter.

Juniors Nina Nytko and Yazmin Setaram both supplied two points.

Sullivan buried six of 11 shots from 3-point territory and scored a team-leading 21 points in Saturday’s win at Leyden. Hannah Kenny added 14 points, while Calli Kenny, who went 4-for-4 from the foul line for the second straight game, scored nine points. Bruschuk and Nytko provided seven and six points, respectively. Kari scored five points, while Stout delivered four points and seven rebounds. Ramey and Setaram both connected on 3-point shots to contribute three points apiece to Willowbrook’s offensive output. The Warriors made 11 of 30 shots from 3-point range in Saturday’s win at Leyden. They drained 11 of 15 free throws.

Willowbrook led the Eagles 20-11 after one quarter and 43-20 at halftime. The Warriors extended their lead to 58-27 by the end of the third quarter.

Willowbrook’s schedule this week includes conference games against Morton and Proviso East, along with tonight’s non-conference game at Nazareth Academy.

The Willowbrook boys basketball team reeled off three wins last week to improve its overall season record to 8-8.

The Warriors began the week with a 67-50 non-conference victory at Sandburg on Jan. 4. On Friday, Willowbrook earned a 55-38 West Suburban Gold Conference win at Downers Grove South. The Warriors completed the week with Saturday’s 56-46 non-conference home win over Lake Zurich. Saturday’s game was the Warriors’ first of three contests in a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday tournament. That event continues with a game against Chicago’s Lindblom Math and Science Academy on Saturday in Lake Zurich, followed by a game on Monday—Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “So far, we’re undefeated in 2022,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins after Saturday’s victory. “Our defense and rebounding have been a lot better in the last couple of games, and we’ve had some balanced scoring.”

The Warriors pushed their winning streak to four games with their triumph over Lake Zurich. Willowbrook’s overall record stood at 4-8 after losing its first three games at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

The Warriors completed that event with a 64-27 win over Glenbard East on Dec. 29.

Willowbrook held a 24-11 lead

through one quarter of its Jan. 4 game at Sandburg. The Warriors’ lead stood at 39-28 at halftime. Willowbrook extended its lead to 56-38 by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Marquel Saleek poured in 26 points to lead the Warriors’ offensive attack in the win over Sandburg.

Saleek made four of eight attempts from 3-point range and converted both of his attempts from the freethrow line. Senior Noah Campbell, who drained a pair of 3-point baskets, added 16 points.

Senior Alex Simmons scored six points, while senior Evan Stubblefield and junior Joey Tumilty both provided five points. Senior Terrell Walker supplied four points and a team-leading 10 rebounds.

The Warriors jumped out to an 18-9 lead through one quarter of Friday’s conference game at Downers Grove South. Willowbrook’s lead grew to 29-17 by halftime and 40-26 by the end of the third quarter. The Warriors delivered a 10-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter to build a 50-28 lead.

Saleek scored 15 points in Friday’s win, which boosted Willowbrook’s conference record to 2-1.

Simmons, who made both of his 3-point attempts and both of his shots from the free-throw line, supplied 10 points. Campbell, who went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, contributed eight points. Stubblefield also provided eight points, while junior Isaac Sobieszczyk scored six points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Tumilty added four points.

Anniversary of Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Jan. 6, 2021 will go down as one of our democracy’s darkest days. On that day, more than 2,000 insurrectionists violently breached the Capitol in an effort to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.

During the attack, the insurrectionists injured 150 law enforcement officers, while five people lost their lives as a result of the day’s events.

I was evacuated from my office after the Capitol Police discovered a bomb 200 feet from my office window. After the National Guard arrived to secure the Capitol, I joined my colleagues in crossing the broken glass and wreckage that filled the halls of Congress to return to the House floor to certify the election and fulfill our Constitutional duty.

There can be no compromise with those who would seek to overthrow our republic. Instead, our focus must be on pursuing truth and justice.

Through the Select Committee to

Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the United States Capitol, we must learn the truth of what happened that day, who was responsible, and how we can prevent any such events from ever occurring again.

Through the Department of Justice, we must deploy every available resource to fully investigate, prosecute, and convict all those responsible for the planning and execution of the insurrection. Those who attacked our Capitol must be held accountable for the sake of justice and to send the unwavering message that Americans will never tolerate any attempt to subvert our democracy.

Jan. 6 was a day of remembrance for that tragedy, a day of thanks for those who showed heroism in facing it, and a day of rededication to the work yet to be done to ensure it never happens again.

The need for vaccines and testing as COVID-19 cases rise I recently joined CNN to discuss the rising number of COVID-19 cases across the country and the importance of expanding access to testing and vaccines. Last week in the U.S., new

COVID cases reached a record sevenday average of more than 265,000 per day. Limiting the spread of COVID-19 through vaccine protection and testing availability is the key. It is the key to keeping our kids in school, keeping our businesses open, and ending this pandemic.

As I said during this CNN interview, my own parents had to travel 1 1/2 hours to get tested, and I know that Americans across the country are experiencing similar obstacles to getting a COVID test. In response to the currently limited testing options, the Biden Administration has recently committed to securing 500 million additional coronavirus tests, which will be distributed free to the American people.

We need COVID-19 testing to be consistently accessible because it is one of our greatest tools against spreading the virus, along with vaccination.

Jesse White: Let’s emulate Martin Luther King’s philosophy through our own lives This Jan. 17, please join me in celebrating the life, influence and contributions of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This will mark the 37th year our country has honored Dr. King’s birthday as a federal holiday and I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect upon how he impacted our society with his philosophy of embracing equality and rejecting bigotry and segregation.

Dr. King served as one of my earliest mentors while I was a student at

Alabama State College in Montgomery, Ala. in the early 1950s. I attended church in northern Montgomery where Dr. King served as the pastor. I had the privilege of listening and observing him firsthand.

In Alabama, I experienced many challenges and frustrations due to segregation. African Americans were not allowed to drink at certain water fountains. We were prohibited from sitting in certain seats on buses and banned from eating at many restaurants.

Following the lead of Dr. King, Rosa Parks and other civil rights leaders, I participated in the Montgomery Bus Boycott that ultimately led to the desegregation of the public transit system. This peaceful protest taught me the importance of perseverance and working together toward a common goal.

To this day, I remain impacted by Dr. King’s teachings. His values and dignified behavior continue to inspire and resonate with me. I fondly remember Dr. King attending my college basketball games and staying afterward to offer me words of encouragement and support. He made a difference in my life.

As I consider the legacy of Dr. King in my life, I also find myself reflecting on my tenure as your Secretary of State. This year will be my 24th and final year as Illinois Secretary of State.

I am filled with gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to serve the people of Illinois for six terms in this capacity.

Sixty-three years ago, I established the Jesse White Tumbling Team as a way to give back to the community and to help young people in need of support and guidance. Because of my desire to help others, I became a teacher and a public servant.

On this holiday, let us work to emulate Dr. King’s philosophy through our own lives. Let us commit ourselves to the following: never discriminate or dislike someone because of race, creed or color; learn to love your fellow man and woman; do something good for someone every day; and give back to those less fortunate. If we do these things, we honor Dr. King through our actions.

Thanks Villa Park Police! We witnessed a hit and run collision last week.

A small car blasted through a stop sign and broadsided another vehicle. No one hurt, thank God. The driver took off without ever caring if someone was hurt. We gave a description and partial license number to the police; they got him in about 15 minutes! Great work! *** I heard Vice President Giggles compare Jan. 6 to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Typical over-the-top leftist hyperbole. One commentator I heard said it best: “Comparing Jan. 6 to Pearl Harbor is unhinged.” *** Jan. 6 was a tragic day last year. But the tragedy continues when 98 percent of Republicans did not show up for the remembrance ceremony at the Capitol.

Some Republicans have stated that the Democrats were behind the insurrection; then they should have been there to protest the Democrats. They can’t have it both ways. The former, loser, disgraced, twice impeached president knows what he did, and soon we all will and the those who helped him too! *** Do you have a dish for TV reception? We do, and lose reception when snow sticks to it. But, spray your dish with cooking spray and snow slides

off—it works great! *** President Biden said he was going to “shut down the virus.” He’s a liar.

He has as much chance of shutting down the virus as he did of shutting down the sun. The man isn’t capable of managing a paper route of a weekly paper like this one. *** On Dec. 29, Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic and Bradley Police Officer Tyler Bailey responded to a hotel to address a complaint about barking dogs that were left in a guest’s vehicle. According to court documents, Darius Sullivan shot Officer Bailey in the head. Sullivan, with help from Xandria Harris, disarmed Rittmanic of her weapon and shot her twice.

Rittmanic died that evening. Bailey is fighting for his life. Where are the “civil rights” protestors? Where are the demonstrations? Where’s the wall-towall media coverage? Is Al Sharpton planning a trip to Bradley? If police had shot Sullivan and/or Harris in the struggle, can you imagine the reaction and the amount of news coverage? *** I couldn’t agree more with what President Biden said about sore loser egomaniac Donald Trump in his speech on the anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection. “His bruised ego matters

more to him than our democracy or our Constitution. He can’t accept he lost.”

Neither can his sore loser cult followers. *** I wish our kids could walk to school.

We walked, over a mile each way, no matter the weather. My family had one car and it was not available. But, it was a different time in our history.

It is sad that it is not safe for our kids.

Child predators are in every city in every state. Little kids and teenage kids are all at risk. Chicago has set up “safe school zones” so some of their kids can walk to school; maybe we need that, but everyone of us would need to be involved every morning and afternoon. Are you willing to do that, in any weather? *** I noticed Dick Durbin, a poster boy for term limits if there ever was one, wants to reform the filibuster in the Senate just because the Democrats can’t get their way with this massive Biden spending bill. This is the same Durbin who in 2018 said doing away with the filibuster would be the end of the Senate. Do us all a favor and go away, Durbin. *** Incredible, but not surprising, that our vice president compared the Jan. 6 insurrection to Pearl Harbor or Sept. 11. Why not add the Kennedy and MLK assassinations to the list, or any other national tragedy we have faced? Don’t get me wrong: I think these rioters went about their protest the wrong way, being no better than the looters who have gotten a pass, it seems, for targeting innocent businesses. However, what it tells me is that there was a group of Americans who were so frustrated with what the new administration was about to deliver that they almost couldn’t help themselves. *** COVID-19 is not still here because the Democrats want it to be until the mid-term elections; how ridiculous!

York Township distributes holiday meals for pantry clients in need

On Monday, Dec. 20, the York Township food pantry distributed over 100 meals to clients in need for the holiday season. Registered clients received a box with all the fixings, a ham and a bag of sweet potatoes to complete their holiday feast. This is the second year the food pantry has distributed hams for the Christmas holiday in addition to the Thanksgiving meals they annually supply.

This goes out to any teacher out there: Either go out and do your job in the classroom or quit, because I’ve got to do my job.

The guy down the street has to do his job. My wife’s got to do her job; the lady down the street has to do her job.

We aren’t crying about it and the lady down the street from me is a nurse; she’s crying about COVID because of all the people getting sick, not about doing her job. So, teachers, stop crying about your job; do it or quit. We don’t want to hear it anymore.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, she said, PRC had over 10 partnerships with organizations around DuPage County, and as of now, PRC is not offering classes at its two facilities.

Partnerships include College of DuPage, and tutors are all volunteers, Abate mentioned.

During the pandemic, Abate continued, and even now, PRC switched to virtual programming, which in some cases, “helped them [clients] a lot with child care and transportation.”

Kandice Krettler, head of Circulation and Outreach Services at the Villa Park Public Library, said she recalled reaching out “about the possibility of working with them [PRC]” to offer ESL classes.

“It was something I was interested in offering to our community members,” she added.

Krettler said she envisioned a program “where people could learn more English in a casual manner,” and agreed to provide space for “anyone who wants to learn and practice English.”

And, it served to “expand our offerings” to the community, she emphasized.

Neli Van Buskirk, PRC Adult Learning and Literacy director, related that the volunteer instructors undergo 12 hours of ESL training through Literacy Works in Chicago, in such areas as how adults learn, techniques for teaching ESL, lesson planning and goal setting.

In Villa Park, students can attend either or both of the Tuesday or Wednesday classes. The Tuesday practical En-

glish class, she described, is a structured class with “more instruction.”

The Wednesday class is “designed for conversation,” Van Buskirk continued, typically for those individuals who “don’t get enough chances to practice [English].”

“We want to serve the community,” she said, adding that the classes are “student driven … We meet the students where they’re at.”

Abate said ESL opportunities are open to anyone who is an English learner, and since the program began, classes have included adults who represent over 140 nations, making it “quite a diverse community.”

Like Durbin in the 1990s, Krettler sees the value in ESL classes for English learners as “an opportunity to develop their skills and become more comfortable” speaking the language.

It “opens more doors,” and helps English learners gain confidence, in an “informal, relaxed” atmosphere, she continued, adding, “We’d love to see it grow.”

“We empower community members to feel safe and function in our society,” Van Buskirk summed up.

The difference between adults and grown ups Blowing out 18 candles on your birthday cake is a huge milestone.

It happens in an instant. You are an adult! As such, you can vote and get married. You can serve in the military, get a tattoo, go to a casino, donate blood and get called for jury duty. You can even win the lottery (because you are finally old enough to buy a ticket).

Even though you can do all these things (and more) being 18 does not make you a grown-up.

I’ve witnessed this firsthand with some of my own kids. They are young adults and independent in so many ways but they are not yet grown-ups because being an adult and being a grown-up are two different things. One is immediate and automatic, the other is not.

A grown-up has the ability to discern a running toilet from anywhere in the house. This is accompanied by the inability to ignore a running toilet from anywhere in the house—even and especially at 2 a.m. An adult flushes and doesn’t give it a second thought or listen.

When you are an adult, you eat when you are hungry, whatever time of the day (or night) that might be – even and especially at 2 a.m. When you are a grown-up you

When a grown-up sees a police car in the rearview mirror he experiences a sense of security.

An adult breaks out in a sweat and hopes he wasn’t speeding—again.

Adults have been known to lie about their age by increasing it.

Grown-ups have been known to lie about their age by decreasing it.

Adults pay the rent; grown-ups pay the mortgage. Adults have jobs; grown-ups have careers.

Adults stay up way past midnight; grown-ups attempt to stay up past midnight when they are waiting for their adults to return home.

Adults wake up late on a Saturday morning; it’s the perfect time to catch up on sleep. Grown-ups see the weekend as a perfect time to catch up on yard work.

Grown-ups cut the cheddar on the cutting board. Adults cut the cheese wherever they can. Grownups secure the bread bag with the

twist tie after making a sandwich.

Adults aren’t aware there is an actual purpose for a twist tie.

Adults put their dirty dishes in the sink. Grown-ups rinse their own dishes along with whatever other dishes adults have left in the sink, put them in the dishwasher, run the dishwasher and return two hours later to unload it.

When you are an adult, the best part of the holidays is getting presents. When you are a grownup, the best part is giving them.
