Bond set for man allegedly found with child pornography Police find Kindle with suspect cache at his home ADDISON — According to the office of DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, 49-year-old David Prefountain of Addison has been charged with two counts of child pornography and is currently being held on $750,000 bail at the DuPage County Jail.

Prefountain was arrested Wednesday, September 16, after the Addison Police Department was tipped off to Internet child pornography activity in the area, Berlin’s office reported. An investigation led officers to the suspect’s home and the execution of a search warrant resulted in the discovery of a Kindle tablet, which contained images of child pornography.

The next court date for Prefountain is set for Oct. 5.

Should he be able to post bond, additional conditions for bond include that he cannot have contact with children younger than 18 and that he cannot have Internet access, according to Berlin’s office.

Addison native awaits heart transplant Moves wife, three kids to UCLA for treatments

ADDISON — When Marty Vece was growing up on Mill Road just off Army Trail, he certainly never imagined the health challenges that would await him a little later in life.

The 1988 Addison Trail High School graduate is now living in Las Vegas and awaiting a heart transplant after a whirlwind of medical treatments.

Nine years ago Marty was diagnosed with a condition called hypertropic cardiomyopathy, which means that his heart muscle is excessively thickening.

“My heart was only able to pump about 50% of normal capacity because my lower left ventricle was enlarged and I also had an irregular heartbeat,” he explained.

Last summer, his condition deteriorated and he was in and out of the hospital with his heart functioning at only about 20% of capacity. His Las Vegas-based cardiologist sent him to UCLA, which has a heart transplant center that serves surrounding states.

“I left on November 3 and I was supposed to be there for six days of testing but they found some serious issues with my lungs, which were overcompensating for my heart,” Marty recalled. “They had originally expected that I would have a heart transplant by Christmas but they realized that I wouldn’t survive a heart transplant because of my lung issues.

“Instead, they woke me up from a nap one day and told me I’d have an open heart surgery to insert something called an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) the next morning. I didn’t even know what that was but it turns

out that it’s a big surgery, even bigger than a heart transplant. It’s a device that hooks up to your heart and a motor pushes your blood through.”

In the middle of these developments, Marty’s wife Elizabeth was in Las Vegas with their three daughters, ages eight, seven and two, and needed to make a quick move to Los Angeles to be with Marty for six months of care and recovery.

“We didn’t expect this and it was really amazing what she was able to do in just three days,” he said. “She packed everything, rented a U-Haul, found a place to live in L.A, and got my sisterin-law to come help. It was really crazy.”

Marty took a leave of absence from his job as a high school English teacher and Elizabeth left her work as well. Adding insult to injury, their cost of housing in L.A was double what they paid in Las Vegas. Thankfully, friends and family stepped in with a crowd funding website and raised enough money to fund the family’s six months in L.A. The website, which is still active, was recommended by UCLA for heart transplant patients because donations are tax deductible.

Marty’s family and friends are still working on fundraisers, including an anticipated walka-thon next spring in Addison or Elmhurst. In the meantime, Marty is back to teaching in Las Vegas but his heart problems are far from solved. The LVAD relieved his lung issue so he is now a candidate for a heart transplant. He is stable and feels “more of a sense of normalcy” but is anxiously awaiting a transplant.

Willowbrook, District 88 joins community groups to host addiction seminar VILLA PARK — Throughout DuPage County and Illinois, substance abuse and addiction, particularly with regard to heroin, is an ongoing issue.

To address that concern, Willowbrook will host a seminar on Tuesday, September 29 at 7 p.m. that will focus on the topic of addiction.

The event, entitled “I Wish I Had Known: An exploration of addiction and its impact on our community,” will feature speakers such as a certi-

fied addictions counselor, a recovering addict, addiction recovery services and the DuPage County Health Department Substance Abuse Coordinator.

The seminar is an event to share information and tools on dealing with addiction, and sponsors include District 88, the Villa Park Police Department, State Rep. Deb Conroy, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Villa Park, Christian Church of Villa Park and Christ Church of Oak Brook. See a

Addison Trail and Willowbrook hosted heroin awareness presentations in March 2014 to educate students, parents and community members about the issue, which has been on the rise in

DuPage County and in Illinois. District 88 also hosted a Student Leadership Symposium in February 2014 to bring student leaders from throughout the county together to create awareness and understanding of the rise of drug use in the area.

The addiction seminar in September will allow District 88 and community groups to continue learning more about this issue and how to help stakeholders.

Godspell opens Oct. 8 Elmhurst College’s Mill Theatre ELMHURST — Elmhurst College opens its 2015-16 theater season with Godspell, the joyous retelling of the parables of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew, featuring music and songs that have become classics.

Conceived in 1970 as a master’s degree thesis project by John-Michael Tebelak, Godspell opened Off-Broadway in 1971. The musical score launched the career of Stephen

Schwartz, who went on to write hit musicals such as Wicked and Pippin.

Alan Weiger, associate professor of theatre at Elmhurst College, will direct the play, with musical direction from Scott Uddenberg and choreography by Amy Lyn McDonald.

Godspell will be performed at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, through Saturday, Oct. 10, as well as on Thursday, Oct. 15, through Saturday, Oct. 17.

There also will be a 2:00 p.m. performance on Sunday, Oct. 11. Performances will take place at the Mill Theatre (253 Walter St., Elmhurst, elmhurst. edu/campusmap).

VILLA PARK — On Sept. 11, District 88 invited first responders, veterans and local officials to attend the annual crosstown football game between Willowbrook and Addison Trail.

This year’s game took place at Willowbrook, and the Addison Trail Blazers won 28-26.

The district introduced the guests to the crowd to thank them for their support of District 88 and to honor the memory of those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks against the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as those who continue to defend our freedoms.

Nearly 40 guests attended the game, representing the Village of Addison, the DeVry Military Resource Club, the Addison Fire Protection District, the Addison VFW, the Village of Villa Park, the Villa Park Police Department, the Villa Park Fire Department, the Villa Park VFW, Superintendents from School District 45 and Salt Creek School District 48 and active members of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

Armitage and Princeton at around 11:34 p.m. and charged with possession of a controlled substance, improper use of registration, driving while license suspended and no insurance.

• A 33-year-old Villa Park man was arrested in the 700 block of N. Lincoln at around 10:27 a.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery.

• Police said an unknown suspect stole a vehicle between 5 and 7 p.m. that was parked in the 1100 block of N. Villa unsecured and unoccupied in front of a local business.

Sept. 6-Sept. 8 Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the 600 block of S. Princeton. Police said that between the above dates, an unknown suspect damaged the door handle on a vehicle that was parked in a driveway.

Sept. 6 • Adam E. Sachs, 31, of Lake Forest, was arrested near North Avenue and Villa at around 11:21 p.m. and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Willowbrook boys soccer team off to red-hot start Warriors 8-1 overall through first nine games

Through late last week, the Willowbrook boys soccer team was riding a seven-game winning streak.

The team’s only blemish on its 8-1 record (through its first 9 games) was a 5-3 loss to Glenbard North early in the season.

It’s safe to say Willowbrook learned its lesson from that

loss.

“The reason we lost that game was we played a very poor first half,” said Warriors coach Pete Ginter. “The guys were not ready to play the game. Glenbard North scored in the first minute of the game.

We scored three goals in the second half. We talked about starting strong in the beginning of the game and being mentally prepared out there. The boys learned from that game.

We’ve scored the first goal in every game since and have won every game.”

In recent action, Willowbrook recorded a 2-0 West Suburban Conference crossover

win against Glenbard West.

The Warriors also scored WSC Gold Division victories over Hinsdale South (4-1) and Proviso East (4-1).

“Our possession game has significantly improved,” said Ginter. “We’re passing and moving the ball much quicker and we are getting a lot of possession in our opponents’ half.

We’re also emphasizing team defense and what we are doing when we don’t have the ball.

It’s important for us to continue to re-press and get the ball right away and organize. We’re also shutting down the opponent’s possession through the midfield. The bottom line is we are

intercepting a lot of balls in the midfield as opposed to deep in our end. We’re doing well with our counterattack. We’re transitioning well on offense and defense in the middle as opposed to in our own end. It’s worked well and it’s made a big difference for us.”

Willowbrook also has thrived on offense. Saul Hernandez had 14 goals through last last week. Aaron Johnson scored both goals against Glenbard West, upping his total to nine goals for the season.

“We have some very outstanding forwards who are scoring a lot of goals for us,” said Ginter.

The coach cited strong play in the back from center midfielders Stasiu Szudrowicz and Lucas Betts, along with outside defenders Tomas Hernandez and Ali Saleh.

“Our back-four defenders are playing extremely well,” said Ginter. “Since that Glenbard North game we’ve only allowed four goals. We had that one tough game.”

Szudrowicz, in particular, has stepped his game up. “Stasiu has been outstanding for us,” said Ginter.

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team dropped a 31-29, 19-25, 25-23 West Suburban Conference Gold Division match to Hinsdale South.

The loss put the Blazers at 6-5.

Alyssa Pham had one dig.

Anastasia Labadessa had 37 assists and eight digs.Carla Muell had 14 digs. Ciara Williams had three digs. Danielle Tulke added three aces and one dig. Jessica Mell had one ace, six kills and three digs. Keara Schmitt had four aces, nine kills and two digs. Nicole Pudlo had three kills. Nina Muella had two aces, eight kills and six digs. Sarah Petrbok had 12 kills and nine digs. The Blazers had 10 service aces in the match.

Junior outside hitters Petrbok and Schmitt, senior middle blocker Mell and senior setter Labadessa have been leading the way for the Blazers.

Labadessa was leading the

team with 31 service aces.

Tulke had 22. Petrbok was tops in kills through late last week with 93. Schmitt had 65 kills, while Mell had 54 and was leading the team with 17 total blocks. Pudlo had 11 total blocks. Labadessa was tops in assists with 262, while Carla Muell had a team-high 51 digs.

Petrbok was second with 49 and Labadessa third with 44.

“We are optimistic about the start of the season,” said Addison Trail coach Dan Styler. “We have played in several tight matches and hope to build on invaluable pressure situations to fuel our growth.”

The Fenton football team evened its record at 2-2 with a recent 6-0 victory at Elmwood Park.

This was Fenton’s final Metro Suburban Conference crossover game of the year. The Bison open MSC West Division play this week.

Fenton also improved to 2-0 in road games this year.

Fenton returns to action Friday in Glen Ellyn against defending conference champion Glenbard South.

Fenton girls swimming Numerous Fenton girls swimmers have turned in strong times thus far. Cassidy Feddersen swam 1:00.94 in the 100 against Plainfield and also went 26 seconds in the 50 against Leyden.

Amanda Tazbazian dropped 18 seconds off her time in the 500 in meets against Plainfield and Leyden.

Kanah Hori also swam 26 seconds in the 50 against Leyden.

Coach Caroline Dukich also was pleased with Lexi Petrella’s efforts in the IM and butterfly at

the Leyden invitational.

“Lexi had excellent performances in the IM and fly,” she said.

Fenton girls cross country Fenton coach Sarah McDougal noted the squad is being led by sophomores Charity Bullis and Jessica McCauley, along with senior captain Marisol Garcia.

“We are seeing consistently good performances from Charity and Jessica as well as Marisol,” she said.

Bullis, McCauley and Garcia are being helped by freshman Angela Duarte and sophomore Mia Clavelli.

“As for the team, times are getting better and faster each week and our confidence is growing,” said McDougal.

“Eighteen of our 28 runners have no previous cross-country experience so as a young team we are working on building endurance and strengthening our mental game.”

The Bison are working hard at closing the time splits with its pack. “We have some work to do with closing the gap between our one, two and three position runners and our four, five, six and seven runners at the varsity level,” said McDougal.

Kirsten Olson noted.

Valbuena also has been impressive in the early-going.

“Suhei is another team member to watch,” said Olson. “She has a natural stride and a competitive spirit that also are contributing to the varsity team.”

Addison Trail defeated West Suburban Conference Gold Division member Hinsdale South at the sophomore and junior-varsity levels.

“We still are working on increasing our focus and com-

mitment in preseason running in order to have a solid base which will help limit injuries during the season,” said Olson.

Olson has been pleased with the atmosphere around the team during the current season.

“The strengths of the team this year include an increase in our team size and the fun atmosphere these girls bring to the hard work they do on a daily basis.”

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team improved to 9-8 overall with a recent 25-6, 25-17 non-conference win over Southland Prep.

Bri Hoffmann had two aces and one dig. Danielle McNamara had two kills. Celia Dewyer added one kill and one ace.

Grace Chantos had one dig.

Olivia Pennebaker added four kills, eight aces and one dig. Maya Bullock had three kills. Maddie Weinhold had

three aces and 10 assists.

Emily Ligocki finished with six assists. Jamie Chiappetta had four kills and one ace. Milena Sogure added four kills.

Willowbrook had 15 service aces as a team.

Willowbrook boys golf The Willowbrook boys golf team played in the Batavia invitational at Fox Valley Golf Club where senior Nick Tiberi led the way with a 93. Junior Jake Neiswanger shot 95.

Junior Sam Malito had a 100, while sophomore Tim Keefe shot 106.

The Warriors also sent a contingent to the Leyden quad at White Pines West Course in

Bensenville. Freshman Joey Guthrie led the way with a 95. Sophomore Buddy Martens shot 98. Sophomore John Morser had a 113, while freshman Josh Lata shot 114.

In other recent action, Willowbrook played in the West Chicago invitational at the Lakewood course at St. Andrews. The Warriors finished fifth out of nine teams with a 366. Tiberi shot 86.

Senior Matt Langer shot 87, while senior Max Sarovich had a 96. Keefe shot 97.

The Warriors also recorded a 178-206 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Morton at Fresh Meadows.

headed to Houston, Texas, for a checkup with oncologists. Poe has been battling myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS, a slow-growing cancer, “I know first-hand what an interruption in service will be,” Poe said. The state’s financial crisis also disturbs him because of the high number of state employees and retirees in his district, he said.

Poe said there’s plenty of blame to go around, and both parties need to get to the table and work out a budget deal.

Medical payments mixed bag for state employees SPRINGFIELD — About 150,000 state employees, retirees or dependents are or soon will be stuck paying cash upfront for medical services, according to updated numbers from the Illinois Department of Central Management Services.

Those employees are covered via the state’s self-insured program administered by groups such as Cigna and HealthLink, CMS spokeswoman Meredith Krantz said Wednesday.

About another 213,000 people are covered in fully insured programs through agencies including Health Alliance, Coventry HMO and BlueAdvantage, Krantz said in an email to Illinois Network.

Those participants will be required to pay only copayments at time of service.

The fully-insured or managed-care plan providers made

the decision to pay now and wait for state funds to come through, Strantz said, adding that was not by state request.

Krantz said CMS has exhausted its fiscal year 2015 revenues and, without an appropriation in place for fiscal year 2016, which began July 1, cannot make provider payments.

“Without a budget in place, there is no mechanism to pay healthcare providers,” Krantz said.

State employees first learned of the medical payment problem after CMS on Sept. 9 posted a memo on one of its Web pages.

First-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and legislative Democrats remain locked in a budget impasse with the state now more than 75 days into fiscal year 2016.
