Save Lufkin Pool group launches non-profit organization

At the end of February 2018, the Villa Park Village Board rejected a resolution to spend $200,000 to keep Lufkin Pool operational until there is a plan and funding for a new facility.

The board decided to table the vote to demolish Lufkin Pool to

give residents an opportunity to find a way to fund repairs.

The Save Lufkin Pool group has started a non-profit organization which is applying for 501(c) (3) status under the larger name Park Advocates of Villa Park. The group will raise funds to present

to the village in order to repair Lufkin Pool. With Lufkin idle in 2018, residents spent their dollars on recreation in other towns such as Lombard and Elmhurst. Restoring Lufkin Pool would bring the lost revenue back to Villa Park in 2019.

The organization will be raising money via online donations and fundraising events as well as looking into grants available to organizations and villages. We are raising money with the expectation that the village will recognize the good faith, hard work, and deter-

mination of so many residents to make Lufkin a working pool again.

ESO 58th season opens Oct. 7 Season begins with ‘Bernstein Spectacular’

Art museum to host panel discussion

On Saturday, Oct. 27 from 1-3 p.m., the Elmhurst Art Museum is holding a panel discussion in conjunction with The McCormick House and the Bauhaus Dream of Pre-Fabricated Homes.

After recent restorations of the McCormick House, one of only three single family homes designed by Mies van der Rohe, scholarly panelists will assemble to shed new light on its importance, linking new research to the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus—a legendary German school where Mies was the final Director.

Scholars such as Wolf Tegethoff, Barry Bergdoll, and Robin Schuldenfrei will connect Mies van der Rohe’s projects in Europe to the U.S.; the dream of prefab in the U.S. after several key German figures arrived in America (Mies, Breuer, Gropius, Wachsmann, and others); Mies van der Rohe’s collaboration with urban planner Ludwig Hilberseimer; general discussions about prefab designs; and more. Free with museum admission or current membership.

Center for the Arts opens exhibition of festival in Oaxaca “Guelaguetza de colores,” an exhibition of international artists in celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. The exhibit opens Wednesday, September 19 and continues through October 19, 2018.

There will be an artist reception and fiesta on Friday, Sept. 28, with music, art and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.

About the festival Guelaguetza de colores is an homage to the pageantry of the Guelaguetza festival in Oaxaca, Mexico. During this annual festival, citizens in their regional costumes enjoy music, parades, and dancing and showcase their finest arts and crafts.

Exhibit curator Karla Wong talked about the meaning of Guelaguetza in Mexico.

“The word has Zapotec origin and is supposed to designate the action of offering, sharing or giving. In this celebration folk groups of the eight regions of the state participate, wearing and taking pride in their colorful costumes,” she said.

Health Department urges caution as additional cases of West Nile Virus reported The DuPage County Health Department announced on Wednesday, Sept. 5, that there are now six human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) that have been reported in the county in 2018. This is an increase of four human cases since earlier this month, and it is anticipated that the numbers will continue to increase over the coming weeks.

The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) remains at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito batches

testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County.

Anyone who experiences symptoms that cause concern should contact their health care provider.

The Health Department continues to monitor WNV activity by collecting and testing mosquitoes from traps located throughout the county from May through October, the West Nile virus season.

Visit Aurora’s Festival of Lights Due to an overwhelming response Villa Park Recreation has added an additional trip to Aurora for the area’s annual Festival of Lights. The trip will begin with a stop at the famous Harner’s restaurant for a delicious dinner and a chance to purchase their famous baked food. Then it will be time to sit back and enjoy the biggest and one of the best of the area’s light displays.

Participants are invited to make donations to the Rotary Club of Aurora, which sponsors the event and provides funds for those in need. This additional holiday trip is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11, departing from the Community Recreation Building, 320 E. Wildwood.

EMH Foundation plans 14th annual Autumn Affair The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation’s 14th annual Autumn Affair will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, 120 E. Delaware Place in Chicago.

Cullerton’s budget transparency measure is now law A new Illinois law sponsored

by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) will mandate transparency and accuracy in the governor’s annual budget proposal.

The governor recently signed Cullerton’s House Bill 5814, which will force all future governors’ offices to record late interest payments as a separate line item in agency appropriations.

The law will paint a clearer picture of the state’s financial standing and slow the depletion of funding needed to provide vital services to Illinois residents.

“All future governors will be forced to present realistic appropriations budgets in the future thanks to this bill,” Cullerton said. “We need to make sure governors, regardless of political party, do not attempt to hide behind phony numbers.”

Currently, most late payment interest penalties accrue at a rate of 12 percent per month for bills unpaid after 90 days, while health care bills accumulate interest at a rate of 9 percent after 30 days.

This bipartisan measure is an initiative of Comptroller Susana Mendoza and is supported by the Better Government Association.

A new Illinois law will ensure service members’ rights are protected while they are serving our nation.

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) sponsored Senate Bill 3547 which modernizes state military service member employment rights.

The updates to the law protect modern operational reserve forces.

This bipartisan measure was signed into law on Sunday and goes into effect Jan. 1, 2019.

“It’s important that we ensure state laws are modernized with the growing needs of our military members,” Cullerton said. “While our service men and women are sacrificing their lives to protect our country they should not have to fear losing their civilian jobs.”

Senate Bill 3547, known as the Service-Member Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, takes the following action: • Consolidates all Illinois laws providing Illinois service members employment protections; • Expands protections regarding military rights notifications and performance reviews during leave; • Adds definitions to resolve issues under existing laws, including the calculation of differential compensation; and • Combines enforcement within the Office of Attorney General.

Student Activity Fair held at Willowbrook

On Sept. 6, the Willowbrook Student Council hosted the school’s annual Student Activity Fair.

That event allows pupils to learn more about the activities and clubs offered at Willowbrook, and 22 groups participated this year. Student success is directly related to involvement in school beyond the classroom, and the Activity Fair allows students to find an extracurricular activity that interests them to become more engaged.

More than 65 percent of the pupils at Willowbrook participate in activities, athletic programs and clubs. If students cannot find a club in which they are interested, they have the opportunity to start a new club.

Former president of Elmhurst College died in Lancaster, Pa. Dr. Ivan E. Frick, 90, of Lancaster, PA, and formerly of Elmhurst, died on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Willow Valley Communities. Born in New Providence, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles G. and Lillie M. Frick. He was married to the late Ruth H. Frick for more than 64 years.

A 1945 graduate of Lampeter High School in Pennsylvania, Dr. Frick received his bachelors’ from Findlay College in Ohio in 1949. He held theological degrees from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1952 and

from the Graduate School of Theology at Oberlin College in 1955. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary in 1959. Dr. Frick lived a life of service to church-related colleges and to his church.

Ordained as a minister in 1951, he pastored churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, then taught theology, religion, and philosophy at Findlay College (now the University of Findlay).

After being appointed assistant to the president in 1963, he served as Find-

lay’s president from 1964–1971. His tenure saw the restoration of the College’s accreditation, an improvement in its financial health, and an expansion of its physical plant through the construction of four buildings. Among numerous awards and degrees from Findlay, he received a Doctor of Humane Letters in 1976.

His tenure at Elmhurst College In November 1971, Dr. Frick assumed the presidency of Elmhurst College. He and his wife Ruth, the College’s First Lady, served in their roles

until 1994. Upon their retirement, Elmhurst renamed the College Union building The Frick Center in honor of their leadership. As president, Frick developed new programs for non-traditional students, achieved 22 years of balanced budgets, expanded the endowment from $750,000 to $34 million, and led the construction of two, and renovation of seven, campus buildings.

Dr. Frick took leadership positions with numerous professional associations in higher education and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He enjoyed reading (especially in German) and genealogy. Throughout his lifetime, he was an active church member: first, in the Churches of God, General Conference and, later in life, the United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his children: son, David Frick, Albany, Calif.; son, Daniel, husband of Tamara Goeglein, Lancaster; daughter, Susan, wife of Ronald Searl, Westmont; sister, Esther Schneider, Quarryville, Pa.; brothers: Paul Frick, Lancaster, and David, Zanesville, Ind.; and five granddaughters:

Rachel and Sarah Foster and Eleanor, Evelyn, and Lillie Frick.

Ivan was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruth and his siblings Lillian Frick Raihl and Charles, Walter, Richard, and Robert Frick.

Two memorial services planned There are two memorial services planned for Dr. Frick. The first will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at Santee Chapel, Lancaster Theological Seminary, 555 West James Street, Lancaster, Pa. A second service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 125 West Church Street. A reception will follow both services. A dream come true

By Leslie Hamric Excitement twirled inside me on a Friday night in May, 1985. This was my first orchestra concert. Guided to my chair by my stand partner, I sat down and got my cello into position.

Having started lessons at the beginning of third grade, I later memorized four pieces from audio recordings made by the conductor weeks before, so I felt prepared.

Suddenly, a hush fell over the audience, followed by silence. Before long, we were playing the first notes of “French Folk Song.” Then we played our other three pieces: “Long, Long Ago,” “Chorale,” and “Ready, Steady, Go.” It was pure heaven performing with the group. My cello and I were one.

While listening to the performances of the other two orchestras, I was filled with pride and accomplishment. Setting a new trend as the first blind person in the district’s orchestra program meant everything to me.

With appropriate training, planning, and teamwork, I knew could do this!

Performing in my first concert went so well that, now, I had a big dream -- to perform in a professional orchestra someday. My orchestral studies continued through graduate school. Memberships included the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, Northern Illinois University Philharmonic, and the New Eastman Symphony.

Fast forward to September, 2017 when, after many transitions, I auditioned for the Elmhurst Symphony.

It was nice to audition for a conductor like Stephen Alltop, who seemed willing to accept a new challenge.

The best advice from my colleagues in the National Federation of the Blind of Illinois and others was to let my cello do the talking. During the audition, my cello and I told our musical story. Sensing that my audition went well, after some discussion, Stephen said he would like to try it.

Thrilled as I was, I also knew my work cut out for me.

Stephen acknowledged that having someone like me in the orchestra was new territory. I responded that learning everything through braille music was new territory for me. We would be pioneering together.

Our collaboration commenced at my first rehearsal in February, 2018.

There was a little apprehensive as to how things would go, but once in that musical moment with the others, all previous apprehension disappeared.

I was one of the group and always would be going forward.

My first concert with the Elmhurst Symphony was Verdi’s Requiem, the longest piece I had ever memorized.

One of the pieces in the second concert was Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis, the craziest work ever memorized. It involved altering my learning method slightly to take on this work since the piece made little sense at first.

Both concerts provided rewarding and challenging experiences. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

The DuPage Care Center and the DuPage Care Center Foundation will host its 51st annual Fall Festival Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Center’s west parking lot. The family-friendly event benefits the Care Center’s Resident Recreation Fund, which helps to provide residents with quality of life programs and services.

The Willowbrook football team continued its winning ways with a recent 26-9 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory over Leyden in Villa Park.

The win moved the Warriors to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in WSC Gold play. The Warriors now have won 12 of their last 13 games dating back to last season and have won seven WSC Gold games in a row and 10 of their last 11 in the conference dating back to last season.

Addison Trail girls golf The Addison Trail girls golf team graduated all its top golfers from last year’s squad.

Newcomers up from last year’s junior-varsity team include Anna Tracz, Mikaela Olvera and Tori Dudka.

“We are very inexperienced,” said Addison Trail coach Phil Stewart, “but the team has grown in numbers.

We have a lot of new golfers so everything is to-be-determined.”

Dudka and Olvera are each on their third year of golf. “Both seem to enjoy the game and want to improve,” said Stewart.

Stewart said he is hoping “this team learns to appreciate the game of golf” and also is hoping to “see huge improvements by the end of the season.”

Addison Trail lost its first dual match of the year to Wheaton North.

team opened West Suburban Conference Gold Division play with a 2518, 25-21 win over Leyden.

Katie Linnig had nine assists, one kill, three aces and six digs. Payton Ceh had three kills, three aces, one assist and eight digs. Elizabeth Bruschuk had one kill, three aces and five digs. Katelyn McCann had six kills and six digs. Kaitlyn Karcz had two kills and one block, while Grace Reckamp had one kill, seven digs and six assists.

The Fenton girls volleyball team continued its strong play to start the season with a recent 25-20, 25-8 non-conference win over Chicago Intrinsic.

The win moved Fenton to 8-0 on the season.

“We hadn’t played in more than a week and it showed as we started very slowly and trailed most of the first set,” said Fenton coach Kelly

Kleidorfer. “However, we turned it on to win that first set and continued to roll through the second set.”

Mackenzie Miller and Agata Kukielko led Fenton with three service aces each. Julia Kaspari, Vicky Krzyszkowski and Kukielko each had four kills.

Miller had 12 assists, while Krzyszkowski and Hanna Matuszewski each had one block. Isa Lozada, making her debut at libero, led Fenton with five digs.

Fenton played Streamwood and Riverside-Brookfield earlier this week and will head to Aurora today to face Aurora Central Catholic.

While the Willowbrook boys soccer team got off to a 1-5 overall record through its first six games, coach Ed DeLaCruz sees plenty of promise.

“We are very young,” he said.

“Our defensive back line starts two sophomores.”

Willowbrook is coming off a 2017 season where it went 7-11 and finished 2-4 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

While young, DeLaCruz has talent throughout the roster. Three-year starting goalie Mario Giase is back.

“Mario is a captain who I know can play at the next level,” said

DeLaCruz. “He does it all in regards to being our leader and a great student-athlete. He is the total package who is a great coach’s player. He makes people better around him.”

Fellow three-year starter David Rizzo also returns at left midfield.

“David is a very talented two-footed player,” said DeLaCruz. “He takes the set pieces, free kicks and corner kicks. He is lightning quick with great field presence.”

Senior captain Jeff Wolski also returns at defensive midfield. “David easily is the best field-presence player on our team,” said DeLaCruz. “He is super-intelligent on the field and in the classroom. He is a physical player who jumps up with no disregard to heading the ball and winning the 50-50 balls.”

Key newcomers to the team include junior center midfielder Dorian Mahone and senior center back Thomas Waldorf.

DeLaCruz said depth will be a big benefit for the Warriors. “Our depth has stood out this season and the team chemistry on this team is one of the best I’ve seen as both an assistant and varsity coach at Willowbrook,” he said.

DeLaCruz said a key will be the development of the team’s back line.

“We have a brand-new back-four defensive line,” he said. “Our outstanding goalkeeper Mario is up to the challenge of leading the troops.”

Artman said on the team front, closing the time gap from runners 1

through 7 is high on the agenda.

“We want to run as a pack and score as little points as possible and have a great season together,” he said.

Artman said the team’s goals are to finish higher in the WSC Gold Division than it did last year and qualify the team for the sectional portion of the state series.

Willowbrook was slated to compete in the Lyons Township invite, but that was canceled due to the weather. The Warriors were scheduled to run in Peoria over the weekend.

The Addison Trail girls cross country team is far from thin in the experience department.

The Blazers return a number of key veteran individuals, including sophomore Viviana Sanfilippo who qualified for the sectional as a freshman and has the third-fastest time in the history of the Addison Trail girls’ program.

In addition to Sanfilippo, also back are seniors Lizbeth Balbuena, Natalie Diaz and Mercedes Lopez.

“Our strength is having some returning third- and fourth-year runners who are acting as strong role models for the growing group of young and new team members,” said Addison Trail coach Kirsten Olson.

Freshman Maddie Ford in her first meet this year placed herself in the top-10 fastest time (No. 9) in program history.

“I’m excited to see what Maddie brings to the varsity level,” said Olson. “She is a true runner and it is nice to see her challenging herself and wanting to learn how to get better every day.”

Olson said Sanfilippo has a major goal in mind this season. “Viviana still is our lead and has her sights set on reaching the state meet this year,” she said.

Olson said one point of emphasis for the team has been summer training. “We are focusing on commitment, especially regarding the summer running to build a proper base for success in the fall,” she said.

Olson is looking forward to the West Suburban Conference Gold Division portion of the schedule. “I am excited for the conference season to see us compete at multiple levels and how I anticipate that we will improve our standing at the lower levels,” she said.

Addison Trail opened the season at the weather-delayed Fenton invitational where Sanfilippo earned a plaque by placing 23rd at the varsity level. Ford also ran that ninth-fastest time in program history.

“Maddie had an outstanding initial

performance,” said Olson.

Addison Trail boys cross country “Young runners” is the catch phrase this season for the Addison Trail boys cross country team.

“We are going to be very inexperienced this year,” said Addison Trail coach Brad Donaldson. “Our top returners all are sophomores and while they ran in the regional last season that is really the extent of their experience.”

Donaldson said the team is focused on its training. “Our main focus this year is on the day-to-day training and the process of becoming a full-time runner,” he explained. “By doing the little things, we hope to stay healthy for the season.”

Senior Randy Alamarales is new to the program this season and, Donaldson said, likely will be its No. 1 runner. He’s currently working through an injury. “When healthy, he will have a chance to qualify for sectionals,” said Donaldson.

Sophomore Dylan Moran is the team’s top returning runner from last year. “Dylan put in a lot of work over the summer and I expect he will take a real leap this year,” said Donaldson.

Senior Sal Lopez also is new to cross country this season. “He is a raw talent,” the coach noted. “He will be a great contributor for us team-wise.”

Addison Trail had its first two meets either cancelled our altered due to weather.

“We are focusing on improvement over the course of the season and to control what we can control,” said Donaldson. “If we improve over the year and are competitive in the conference meet and regional and get an athlete or two to sectionals, it will be a good season.”

With workers in 99.7% of U.S. counties, energy efficiency has become a nationwide job engine integral to state and local economic growth. More than 300,000 energy efficiency jobs are located in America’s rural areas, and 900,000 jobs are found in the nation’s top 25 metro areas. Energy efficiency added more new jobs than any other industry in the entire U.S. energy sector in 2017, and now employs nearly 2.25 million Americans, according to a new jobs analysis from E4TheFuture and the national, nonpartisan business group E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs). The new report, Energy Efficiency Jobs in America 2018, finds energy efficiency workers now outnumber elementary and middle school teachers, and are nearly double the number of Americans who work in law enforcement.

“We have long known that energy efficiency is a major source of jobs, and by conservative estimates, about one in every hundred U.S. adults now works in energy efficiency,” said Steve Cowell, president of E4TheFuture.

“Efficiency is also a key strategy for meeting multiple policy objectives. It saves money, improves health, lowers carbon emissions and creates local jobs that cannot be outsourced.”

Energy Efficiency added 67,000 net jobs in 2017, making it the fastest-growing job category in the energy sector. Energy efficiency employs twice as many workers as all fossil fuel industries combined. Efficiency workers now account for 35 percent of all U.S. energy jobs.

Among the states, California leads energy-efficiency employment with 310,000 jobs, followed by Texas (154,000), New York (117,000), Florida (112,000), and Illinois (87,000). Seventeen states now employ more than 50,000 workers and the 25 states with the
