Then join us for the annual Touch-A-Truck and Kids’ Toys & Garage Sale in Centennial Park on Saturday, August 6 from 10 a.m. until Noon. Touch-A-Truck is for all ages and free for the entire family! • The Villa Park Board of Trustees meeting held at Village Hall on Monday, July 25, began with a discussion of funding the underground components of referendum-funded road projects. The discussion, conducted during the Committee of the Whole portion of the meeting, focused on identifying funding sources for needed water main, combined sewer/ sanitary water separation and sewer repairs located under streets that will be repaired with bond referendum money. Solutions included seeking an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) loan for water mains as well as using capital improvement funds and seeking a new referendum approval for one-half cent sales tax increase.

• Trustee Bob Wagner attended the meeting via electronic connection, as he was on vacation. This method is allowed with Board approval. The Board voted unanimously to allow this during Monday’s meeting.

• During the Formal Agenda portion of Monday’s meeting, the Board voted 5-0 (Trustee Don Kase was absent, Trustee Bob Taglia abstained)

to pass nine items listed on the Consent Agenda, including: a) The Village Bill listing dated July 25, 2016, in the amount of $1,202,332; b) Minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole meeting for July 11, 2016; c) Minutes from the Village Formal Board meeting for July 11, 2016. d) The First and Final reading of an Ordinance allowing parking on the parkway within the Home Avenue Industrial area (St. Charles Road to Home Ave, Ardmore to Harvard) to bring this activity into technical compliance with the Village ordinances. e) A resolution authorizing an engineering services agreement with Christopher B. Burke Engineering, LTD for the North Ave. Flood Study in the amount of $85,000. This item will fund a study for flood control along Ardmore and North Ave. intersection to protect a 100-year level storm. f) A resolution accepting a proposal from JX Peterbilt of Bolingbrook for a 2017 model 348 truck with snow plow and dump body in the amount of $168,595. g) A resolution accepting a proposal to purchase a 2016 Ford F-550 regular cab truck with Monroe dump body from Morrow Brothers Ford in the amount of $52,512. This four-

wheel-drive vehicle will be used by the Streets and Forest Division of the Public Works Dept. and will replace a 1996 model currently in use. h) A resolution approving the purchase of an open-air shelter to be located just west of the Historical Museum in the amount of $26,285.

Zenon Company of Buffalo Grove submitted the lowest cost proposal. i) A resolution approving an agreement with the State of Illinois Department of Transportation for the Roosevelt Road improvement project. The Village’s share of the costs are $76,596. The entire project, which is funded 78% by the Federal government and includes Oakbrook Terrace, is in the amount of $1,116,880.

The Board voted 4-2 to pass the First and Final reading of an Ordinance approving the increase in Class EE liquor licenses (beer and wine only) from six to seven in the Village. This is in response to Stella’s Place video/slot machine request to open a new location at 298 W. North Ave. During the Committee of the Whole portion of Monday’s meeting, Trustee Bob Taglia and President Deborah Bullwinkel voted against placing this item on the formal agenda. Both Taglia and Bullwinkel also voted against it in the first and final reading.

Villa Park Police remind: Click It or Ticket!

According to a release issued by Lt. Marc Bregman of the Villa Park Police Department, a roadside safety check will be conducted in the area of 70 E. North Avenue during the dates of Aug, 6, 12, 20, and Sept. 16 and 24 between the hours of 9 p.m. and 12 a.m.

The safety checks are being conducted to promote the safety and well-being of the motoring public and to provide a deterrent for those who might violate Illinois Vehicle Code statutes and village ordinances. Plans have been established to conduct the checks at locations and during the hours, which will provide the maximum opportunity for the detection and apprehension of motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

The roadside safety checks will be conducted according to the guidelines set forth by the courts.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday morning that it was investigating a head-on fatal accident that occurred Sunday, July

31 at approximately 2:35 p.m. at Grand Ave., just east of Wilson in unincorporated Bensenville. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched for an accident with injuries involving four vehicles.

Paulette Jones, 73, of Northlake, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her daughter Jennifer Jones, 44, also of Northlake, was taken to the hospital, but died there. Five people riding in the other vehicle were all

transported to Loyola Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Jones’ were traveling westbound on Grand Ave. in a Nissan Altima when it was struck head on by a Grand Marquis that crossed into oncoming traffic. The driver of the Marquis, a 21-year old-male, had four additional passengers in the vehicle all of whom were injured. Two additional vehicles were involved in the crash with minor injuries reported.

At this time, no further information is being released pending an investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office at 630-407-2400.

As District 88 prepares for the 2016-17 school year, the administration would like to remind parents/ guardians to complete the pre-registration process.

District 88 is implementing an online pre-registration system, which is open through Aug. 7. The goal of this system is to expedite student registration by allowing certain information to be input electronically ahead of time. Addison July 28 • Jennifer A. Kilarski, 38, of Addison, was arrested at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 7:14 and charged with retail theft.

• Ernesto Quiroz-Alejo, 25, of Addison, was arrested near Myrick and Villa at around 8:59 p.m. and charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to yield-left turn.

July 25 • Francisco J. Salgado, 18, of Franklin Park, was arrested in the 600 block of E. Lake St. at around 11:10 p.m. and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis. Police said Salgado was in possession of a controlled substance and cannabis while parked in his vehicle in a ho-

Villa Park July 23 • Burglary was reported at a house of worship. Between 10:20 and 11:35 p.m., police said an unknown suspect stole an iPhone that was left unattended and unsecured.

• Burglary to a vehicle was reported at Walmart. Between 12 noon and 1:41 p.m., an unknown suspect entered an unsecured parked vehicle and stole and iPad that was left on the passenger seat of the vehicle.

• Theft was reported at a store at around 8:22 p.m. A victim told police he placed his phone on a counter while he spoke with a clerk when an unknown suspect grabbed

the phone and walked away.

• Unlawful use of weapon was reported in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 12:42 a.m. Police said several individuals engaged in a physical altercation in a parking lot. One individual retrieved a handgun from a vehicle and fired several shots, not striking anyone.

July 22 James G. Stavropoulos, 34, of Downers Grove, was arrested in the 200 block of E. Harrison at around 2:27 p.m. May 22, 2015, and charged with identity theft. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued July 22.

Experts on stolen valor say a measure signed last week by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is a small step toward holding individuals more accountable for pretending to be veterans.

The bill signed by Rauner makes it a petty offense in Illinois for someone to get tangible benefits from lying about serving in the military, a measure similar to an already existing federal law.

People found guilty of violating the Illinois law could be fined $200.

Violating the federal law carries the potential of a year behind bars.

the vehicle. The vehicle’s owner told police there was nothing of value in the vehicle at the time of the burglary.

• Burglary was reported in the 700 block of N. Michigan. Police said that between 2:10 and 2:33 a.m., unknown suspects broke into a secured construction yard.

The suspects then cut locks off of storage containers and vehicles, stealing various tools and construction equipment.

July 18 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 200 block of W. Roosevelt. Police said that between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., an unknown suspect left the store with a guitar without paying.

July 15 • Theft was reported in the 200 block of S. Villa. Police said that between 12 noon July 15 and 12 noon July 17, an unknown suspect stole a pair of earrings from a purse.

• Damage to village property was reported near Ardmore and Highridge at around 5:30 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect struck a parkway sign and left the scene.

Retired Navy SEAL Larry Bailey, who works alongside Burkett to expose fraudsters, said there’s something more powerful than a fine.

“Actually the greatest punishment can be the public recognition as a fraud,” Bailey said.

Bailey said the new law will force the issue. “You can say, ‘Hey! Old so-and-so was found guilty of being a fraud. …Now he paid a $200 fine,’ so that validates that in terms of the law,” he said.

Taxpayers won’t foot bill for governor’s mansion repairs ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

Illinois’ executive mansion is set to get its first big makeover since the 1970s, and the taxpayers aren’t being asked to pay a dime for it.

The Illinois Executive Mansion Association selected an architect this week for a $15 million renovation project that will shore up the building and its operating systems, and in the process, improve the view for the approximately 10,000 tourists who visit annually.

Max Bever, a spokesman for the organization, said taxpayers are not being asked to pay for repairs to

the mansion, which is now the residence of Gov. Bruce Rauner and his wife Diana. “This is entirely going to be paid for through private donations,” he said.

So far, nearly a third of the money has been raised.

Bever said the building, at one time maintained through state funding, had fallen into disrepair over the years, which led to the association’s push for a renovation plan and a campaign to finance it. He said no major work had been conducted on the mansion in nearly 50 years.

“The (mansion) board has put together this plan in just the last two years,” he said. “We want it to last well into the 21st century.”

The first phase of the project, replacing the roof, was completed last year at a cost of $500,000.

The next phase includes major exterior and interior work, modernization of the private residence, mechanical system upgrades, updates to landscape and grounds, and security and accessibility enhancements.

Bever said the mansion, constructed in 1855, is the third oldest

in the nation, and has great architectural value. Beyond that, it has hosted some of the most prominent people in the world, including, of course, Abraham Lincoln.

“The historical aspect is very important, and the people who have been through these doors is just incredible,” he said. “There just hasn’t been an effort to keep it up

to date.”

MOTB – the quest for the dress

We are entering the wedding stage of life – better put, re-entering.

Since our own wedding we’ve been on sabbatical, during which time we experienced all other stages – from the baby shower to the kindergarten and high school graduation stages and everything in between. Now, the cycle has come full circle and I do believe we’re back to weddings.

(Cue “Here Comes the Bride.”)

We’re attending a number of nuptials in the near future, but one in particular has piqued our interest: the wedding of our daughter. This, in turn, means one thing – wedding plans.

I am overwhelmed by the scope of planning opportunities available through an average wedding today.

But there is one element that has me focused to the point of distraction.

The dress.

Not hers. Mine.

I’ve completed numerous shopping trips – online and to real live stores where I tried various necklines, hemlines and waistlines.

I found one I seriously considered getting but then had second thoughts. This has happened three or four times. In the meantime, the bridesmaids have chosen and bought their dresses. They’ll look fabulous.

The flower girls have theirs. They’ll be adorable. My husband and sons have all purchased brand new suits.

They’ll be the definition of handsome. Even my daughter has said

yes to The Dress. It’s gorgeous and she’ll be magnificent.

I’m still looking.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand the overall insignificance of my decision. I’m the mother of the bride for goodness sakes. People won’t care about what I wear. All eyes will be on my sweet baby girl. As they should be.

Still, I have just one daughter and this is my only shot at filling the role of MOTB. The more I go through life, the more I realize these moments shouldn’t be squandered. It is an important day and I want to feel good in my skin (or lace over satin, as the case may be).

So, while this whole dress ordeal isn’t important to anyone else, it is to me. There are numerous beautiful choices to choose from. I’ve been contemplating why I’m having such a hard time with the decision. It’s pretty simple, really.

I’m not sure I’m ready to be the mother of the bride. My daughter is ready. Her fiancé is ready. They are a

beautiful couple. We love them both.

I, however, have always been a little stunted. It seems I’m perpetually playing catch-up when it comes to understanding the logic of this thing called life. Most people are able to look ahead and anticipate milestones. I live in the day (but usually not by choice). I am still shocked that my daughter is a grown up. I thought she’d be a little girl forever.

But that is not the case (thank goodness) and now I am soon-to-be the mother of the bride.

Except I’m not old enough, not ready enough to be the mother of the bride. At least not in my mind. The numbers would prove otherwise.

This brings about such tugging feelings. I don’t feel appropriately mature to be right here right now.

But I am. That’s life.

And I need a dress.

I know I will find one. Perhaps I already have. I just need to pull the trigger, or swipe the plastic – if we are being honest. Which I will do.

I’ve got to wear something. The alternative wouldn’t be pretty. But we don’t want to go there.

I best get shopping.

Willowbrook law class holds mock trial after visit to Circuit Court In May, 30 Willowbrook students brought to life the skills they learned in class and from a field trip to the DuPage County Circuit Court.

Those students were part of Willowbrook Career and Technical Education Department Chair Mary Barney’s law class and participated in a five-day mock trial. The fictional case was “Illinois v. Ashley Skinner,” with the charge of battery and attempted manslaughter for injuries caused to a male victim at a local mall.

The jury heard opening statements, testimonies and closing arguments. They also were presented with evidence. There was no verdict or judgment, as the jurors were unable to reach a decision. They were a hung jury, with a 10-2 vote for guilty, causing a mistrial with no cause for retrial due to the end of the school year. Students were able to use the lessons they experienced throughout the school year to portray the roles they chose for the mock trial.

VFW Men’s Auxiliary plans golf event for Aug. 20 The Villa Park VFW Post #2801 is holding its Annual Golf Outing, the “Doc and Terry Mullen Memorial,” on Saturday, August 20 at Western Acres Golf Course in Lombard.

There will be a shotgun start at 2 p.m. A catered dinner will take place back at the VFW Post at 6 p.m. with prizes and raffles. There will be a cash bar at the VFW. Tickets for the golf outing are $65 per person for nine holes of golf, contests, prizes and dinner. Dinner only is available for $25 per person.

State Senator Tom Cullerton’s bipartisan government consolidation model may soon be applied throughout the state to streamline and remove redundancies in local government.

Senate Bill 2994, which requires all Illinois county boards to submit a report to the General Assembly recommending units of government that may be dissolved or consolidated, was signed into law.

“Through our bipartisan work, we have made DuPage County a leader in government consolidation,” Cullerton said. “It’s time to use the lessons we have learned and spread our success throughout the state to save valu-

able taxpayer dollars.”

This was the first step DuPage County took in its government consolidation efforts.

Through this model, the county is projected to save taxpayers more than $100 million over the next 20 years.

Cullerton acknowledges that Illinois has more than 7,000 government entities that were developed decades ago.

“Government needs to evolve with the needs of the people,” said Cullerton. “It’s important that we continue to look for ways to make sure government is working for the people.”

A busy summer for Willowbrook boys basketball team Warriors log more than 50 games

The Willowbrook boys basketball team got its money’s worth this summer and then some.

Coach Chris Perkins noted the team logged 54 games during the summer. The Warriors competed

in the Riverside-Brookfield summer league and also participated in shootouts at Stagg, Addison Trail, Joliet Central, the University of Illinois at Chicago and IPFW in Indiana. Willowbrook also hosted its own shootout.

“We had a pretty busy summer,” said Perkins.

Perkins said the team made key strides during its time together, particularly on the defensive front.

“I liked that our defense improved,” he said. “I’m excited about that. We did a lot of fullcourt pressure. Defense was a ma-

Willowbrook was a youthful team last year with four sophomores and a freshman contributing. “All our guys are a lot more seasoned now,” said Perkins.

“Those guys played an integral role in what we did last season.

our conference is going to be difficult as usual. It’s going to be a very competitive conference with Downers Grove South as the returning champs. They still have key guys. Hinsdale South is very athletic and Morton is a deep team.

Proviso East always is going to be up top. We didn’t play Addison Trail in the summer, but they should be solid and so should Leyden, they are usually difficult with their 1-2-2 zone. We’ll have to be ready.”

Perkins said players such as Ethan Schuemer (junior), Matt Myers (junior), Freddie Clay (senior), Matas Masys (sophomore), Ryan King (senior) and Cornelius Paxton (junior) were among those who had productive summers.

“We had a lot of guys play well,” he said. “Overall, it was a pretty solid summer. The kids have expectations. The younger guys played with us last year and know what to anticipate and expect.

The Fenton football team got plenty of work over the summer—in shifts.

Bison coach Mark Kos split the team’s camp into two sessions, one running June 20 through July 1 and the second going July 8 through July 22.

“We tried to balance things out because of the shorter summer,” said Kos. “We got out of school late this year because of the construction and then we start fall practice Aug. 8. We wanted the kids to do what they needed to do with football here and then allow them to be kids and have a fun summer and not be over the top with football.”

Fenton also participated in a variety of 7-on-7 events. Fenton hosted Bartlett for one at Redmond Park in Bensenville and then went to another event at Nazareth Academy that featured Nazareth, Plainfield North and Cary-Grove. In July, Fenton hosted another 7-on-7 at Redmond with Belvidere North, Fenwick and Streamwood competing.

Kos noted he saw plenty of positives coming out of the summer sessions. “What I liked the most is the accountability,” he said. “The kids were there for one another and there was a lot of enthusiasm that they brought to practice every day. They have a willingness to learn and be coachable. Those are positive things we see as a staff. We have a good baseline in place. We did a lot of installing with the offense and defense. That’s what the summer is there for—teaching. We’ll come back in August and refine what we have in place and get ready for the start of the season against Leyden.

Kos added the 7-on-7 events bring a different element to the summer activities. “The 7-on-7s always are helpful,” he said. “It gives the kids a chance to compete and gives them the chance to compete against people other than their friends and teammates. We saw some good things. We saw kids who we feel confident will be playmakers.

We saw them step up in these 7-on-7s. We have three kids competing at quarterback and the multiple 7-on-7s gave us a chance to fairly evaluate them because they were able to get numerous reps. We’ll see who continues to develop and who will be No. 1 on the depth chart when we open up camp.”

Kos likes the balance his roster has this season. “We definitely are well-balanced,” he said. “We have 15 four-year returning players, which is a pretty good number. The senior leadership definitely is visible and present, plus we have a good handful of good athletic juniors and we have some sophomores up with us as well who have a bright future. But it starts and stops with the seniors. They are taking ahold of the program and that’s what you want to see happen.”

Addison resident Matthews continues to excel on mat

Addison resident Jake Matthews is no stranger to success on the wrestling mat.

Earlier this year, Matthews won the 108-pound state championship at the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation Novice and Senior State Championships. The Novice Division is for wrestlers ages 10-12 and the Senior Division is for ages 12-14.

Matthews, who wrestles for the Headlock Wrestling Academy that is the kids feeder program for Addison Trail High School, qualified for state through both regionals and sectionals to compete in the state tournament. Matthews was one of seven qualifiers from Headlock.

“I definitely had some tough matches,” Matthews told the Independent earlier this spring. “I never lost my composure. I wrestled through some tough matches.”

Matthews noted on the first day of state he pinned all his opponents and then scored a 7-3 win in the first match of the second day. He won the

108-pound title by a score of 14-7.

“I was losing 7-2 at one point,” Matthews noted. “I improved toward the third period and won 14-7.

I never lost my composure in that match. I kept telling myself I wasn’t going to go out like this. I hit all the moves I knew and kept moving. I never stopped. My opponent got tired and I kept going.”

Matthews said conditioning and technique made a big difference for him. “We work out a lot in practice,” he said. “I was ready. In previous years my stance was not as good. I fixed it and had a good stance and had a really good leg defense. I don’t think anybody got a shot off on me.

I watched the legs and made sure everything was tight.”

This was Matthews’ first state title in the folkstyle discipline. Matthews noted he’s won other tournaments in the freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines. “Last year I qualified for state but I didn’t do as well. This year I did a lot better. This means a lot. I know I worked hard for it. It felt really good afterward.”

Matthews lauded the work of Headlock coach Sam Geraci. “I couldn’t do what I did without coach Geraci,” he said. “He’s always pushing us to our limits. Also, a bunch of my teammates helped me get to state. My dad always has been there

Matthews, who also plays in the Addison Cowboys youth football program, will be an eighth-grader this fall at Indian Trail in Addison.

Also qualifying for state out of the Headlock shop were Caden Votruba (115 pounds, Novice), John Asiuras (74 pounds, Novice), Gavin Ranquist (79 pounds, Senior), Jonathan Chaidez (84 pounds, Senior), Xavier Sierra (156 pounds, Senior) and Nick Skamra (177 pounds, senior).

Skamra finished fifth at 177 pounds, while Asiuras finished eighth at 74 pounds.

Timothy Christian girls volleyball team wraps up summer schedule Trojans looking to continue recent string of successes as 2016 season nears

The Timothy Christian girls volleyball team had plenty going on over the summer.

The Trojans recently wrapped up their summer camp—which was punctuated by strong attendance, according to coach Scott Piersma.

“We had 24 girls from sophomore to senior,” he said. “That’s a pretty good number to have.”

Piersma’s group also competed in the Great Lakes summer league held out in Aurora at the Great Lakes Center.

“We didn’t play as well as we hoped, but it’s July right now. It’s not October,” the coach said. “We

were able to get a lot of girls playing time in the summer league. We had a different lineup every week. It was a great opportunity for the girls to get playing time and get back into the groove and get ready to go in August.”

Timothy saw a wide variety of competition in the summer league.

“We might have been one of the smaller schools in the league,” said Piersma. “IC Catholic Prep and Westmont also were there. We saw some schools that we won’t normally see during the season. We do play some Class 3A and 4A teams, but it was good to see a different type of game and be able to compete against those teams.”

The Trojans return the likes of veterans Ava Venema and Kendra Teune to this year’s teams. “Ava and Kendra are seniors now and third-year varsity players,” said Piersma. “It was good to see them be forces at the net offensively. We saw some of that last year from them and now they are taking the lead up front. It was great to see.”

One area the team has been hard at work on throughout the summer is communication.

“Communication will be big,” said Piersma. “We have to get used to playing with each other. Communication is at the core. If we’re able to talk out there, we’re able to help each other out and get to where we need

to be. When we played silent ball we didn’t look too good. It’s something we will keep working on. We have to find people who are up for taking on that vocal leader role for the team.”

Timothy graduated only four seniors from a team that placed third in the state in Class 2A and set the school record for most wins in a season with 37.

“We have a lot of returning talent,” said Piersma. “We have some talented juniors. These girls played a big role last year and we have people to fill the vacant spots. We have a great setter in Tracy Westra and along with players such as Ava, Kendra, Zoe Stanton and Olivia Hoekstra, we have people who know how to play

Westra received plenty of seasoning last year as a sophomore playing with graduated setter Dani Van Laten.

“Tracy is taking over as the sole setter,” said Piersma. “She has to realize this is her team. She’s in charge and calls the shots out there as the setter.”

Timothy officially kicks off the 2016 season with tryouts on Aug. 10. “That gives us a good two weeks to get ready,” said Piersma. “We’ll open the season with the tournament we host with Westmont over Labor Day weekend. We’ll see a lot of good teams there. It’s a good way to start the season.”

State takes first step in reining in standardized tests Governor Rauner: ‘There’s too much testing in the state of Illinois’

Illinois isn’t getting rid of the bevy of tests students take every year, but the state will finally track just how many tests students are taking.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a law Friday that will have school districts across the state send a report of every statewide or national standardized test students take.

The governor said Illinois needs to know just how many tests school children take each year.

“We have a vast number of standardized test being given to our

children throughout the state of Illinois,” Rauner said. “There is a concern about too much testing in the state of Illinois.”

Rauner said he wants local schools to continue to have local control over their test curriculum, but he does want to know how many tests are scheduled.

Mike Chamness, spokesman for the Illinois Association of School Administrators, said the Illinois’ School Management Alliance actually wanted the governor to veto the law.

“We’ve had over the past two years 116 unfunded mandates put on schools,” Chamness said. “This is just another.”

The governor said it’s time for Illinois to look past standardized tests as the best or only way to measure whether students are learning what they need to know.

Rauner said there’s a misconception about testing.

“If students score at a high level on some test, that’s a good school,”

Chamness said the Alliance agrees that standardized testing is not the be all and end all for measuring success.

“Tests have their place in terms of providing useful data and benchmarks for educators,” Chamness said. “But in terms of saying this is a good or a bad school, we think that’s a misuse of those tests.”

Rauner said Illinois will always need a way to measure how students are learning and how well teachers are teaching. He said he hopes to push for those reforms soon.

Residents living in and around the Franklin Park can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other chronic, serious conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening. Carl Fiorito Senior Center will host this community event on August 22, 2016.

Students from School Districts 88, 45, 4 attend STEM camp From June 20 to July 1, about 30 students participated in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) camp at Willowbrook.

(Addison Trail and Willowbrook), Addison School District 4 and School District 45. During the camp, students learned how to code apps for android devices, as well as how

to program robots. The event was hosted in partnership with LearnTEC, Inc. The two-week camp culminated in a fun competition called “Game of Drones,” where partici-

pants programmed and flew drones.

“What made me want to join the camp is I kind of like playing games, so it’s cool to know how it all works, so I can maybe make my own game one day,” said Carolyn Burns, who will be an eighth-grader at Jackson Middle School this fall.

“It’s actually awesome that we get to do this camp, because I know some people don’t even learn this until high school, and it’s cool we can get a head start to learn this.”

Sara Das, who will be a sophomore at Willowbrook this fall, agreed. She said she learned new skills from attending the STEM camp.

“I think just building robots and learning how to create things and problem solving has been a very important thing to learn,” Das said.

“This is actually very new to me.

I didn’t know this would be some-

thing I would be interested in, so I decided to sign up and see if it was something that would interest me.”

District 88 Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Adam Cibulka said the districts were happy to provide this experience.

“It was just a great opportunity for the kids to really dive into something they’re interested in,” Cibulka said. “In the future, we hope to offer more programs like this. We know this is the first step of many in terms of expanding this field … to where we can engage students in this kind of next generation of technology, as well as the next generation of skills (they) need to participate out in the career field. We know these fields are in high demand out in the workforce, and our mission to help students be college and career ready aligns directly with that.”
