Major milestone for Health Department RxBOX

The DuPage County Health Department’s medication take-back program, known as RxBOX, recently reached a collection milestone, following the drop-off by local police departments of unwanted, expired or unused medications.

On Friday, Aug. 17, officials dropped-off 4,957 pounds of medications, bringing the total to 101,165 pounds collected (roughly the weight of 25 average passenger cars) since the program was launched in 2009.

The success of the RxBOX program is in the totals, with more than 10,000 pounds collected in 2012, and over 12,000 pounds each year since.

“This was accomplished through the partnership between residents, law enforcement and public health officials of DuPage County,” said Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala.

“We applaud the remarkable community response to RxBOX, as we work to reduce the risk of unused medication falling into the wrong hands.”

In its Framework, the DuPage County Heroin Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce identified the importance of reducing access to prescription drugs by promoting the use of safe drug-disposal through RxBOX and other drug take-back programs.

The health department supports local community and pharmacy takeback programs as assisting in meeting this goal.

Using RxBOX protects the envi-

ronment and reduces the possibility of medications falling into the wrong hands, which is dangerous and often

tragic. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency arranges for the incineration of collected medicines to

ensure they are not reused.

Art museum presents David Wallace Haskins: Polarity

The Elmhurst Art Museum presents David Wallace Haskins: Polarity, a major new solo exhibition by the Chicago-based multi-media artist, opening Sept. 8 and remaining through January 13, 2019. Haskins’ most ambitious installation yet, the exhibition will premiere multiple new projects including an interactive video work and large-scale light installation as separate project spaces within the Museum galleries.

Visitors will be invited to explore a trio of works in the main galleries that create tension from opposing forces, whether elemental or experiential.

The video Where We Meet shows a series of people from all ages walking from a single point on the horizon towards the viewer, arriving life-sized

on the museum wall before turning and disappearing into the distance again, highlighting one’s absence and presence in the world.

Time Mirror III continues the interactive video work Haskins first introduced at the Museum in 2016 and allows viewers to experience multiple past versions of themselves interacting in real-time throughout the gallery space.

The large-scale Architecture of Light is an immersive installation that combines the immaterial elements of fire (light) with the material elements of water (haze) to recreate atmospheric conditions similar to the sky’s sun and clouds. Using high-powered projectors Haskins creates dynamic architectural and sculptural composi-

tions of light throughout the space. As visitors explore the light installation, their physical presence dramatically transforms the surrounding environment with each small action.

Haskins will also premiere a site-specific installation in the Museum’s McCormick House designed

by Mies van der Rohe, which is the second of a series of transformative architectural interventions. Entitled Ascension / Descension, the mirrored installation will put the one-story glass house designed by the famed architect in conversation with the tall skyscrapers that made him a modern icon. This series, which debuted with an intervention by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, celebrates the historic structure by Mies, especially as the

‘A Night For Nature’ Benefit for Du Page Forest Preserves

District 88 honors former board member for years of service Timothy Gillen recognized at recent meeting

During the Aug. 13 District 88 Board of Education meeting, the board and administration thanked former board member Timothy Gillen for his years of service.

Gillen has been a Board member since 2011 and recently resigned. He has served on the following committees: Behavioral Interventions, Citizens Advisory Councils, Curriculum Council, District 88 Art Scholarship, District Finance and Employee Recognition. His two sons are graduates of Willowbrook – Tim Jr. in 1983 and Russell in 1984.

Trail alumna, and many of her family members graduated from Addison Trail as well. Her degrees and career are in education, and she resides in Addison.

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) attended the Inaugural Ride Away From the Darkness Motorcycle Run and Rally in DuPage County held recently.

The event, which drew more than 50 local riders, was organized

by Westmont resident Chris Svitak, whose son committed suicide nearly four years ago. All proceeds from the August 18 ride and rally were donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“Chris Svitak chose to take his tragedy and raise awareness so someone else’s son, daughter, mother, brother, does not experience the loss of a loved one through suicide,” said Mazzochi. “Chris was unaware of the seriousness of his son’s medical condition, and we are going to work together to explore legislation that will make it easier for people to spot signs and get help for their loved ones. Chris is doing a great job to organize this and other events to raise money for the Foundation for Suicide Prevention.”

Erik William Wright, 28 How does one even begin to find words? There just aren’t. There is no explanation, no rationale, no sense. There have been many messages, and the words that so many have used to describe Erik have been kind, generous, funny…with the biggest smile. How does someone who seemed to have so much, never quite feel like he was enough?

If loving Erik more would have changed things, the outcome would have been different…he was loved fiercely by his family, his dogs, his friends. In the end, that is where we will have to try and find our comfort.

Erik William Wright was born on a beautiful October day in 1990. He is loved endlessly by his parents, Bill and Jill who consider that job as the happiest, most challenging, yet rewarding honor to have ever been given. Their bond can be shown by the fact that Erik bought his first home just around the corner from theirs.

An exceptional big brother to his sister, Ellen, Erik was her biggest fan, cheerleader, and partner in she-

nanigans…and only occasionally crossed over into being a bossy first born – most recently chiding her and insisting on buying her some “sensible shoes” for her hospital rotations.

Erik’s devotion to his Nana and Papa were exceeded only by their devotion in return.

Every boy should have a Nana to make whatever breakfast was needed to get her boy to school…a considerable task, given that he claimed a stomachache for nearly every day of his school years. Even as an adult, Erik often stopped for one of Nan’s “care packages” on his way to work. His Papa’s quiet guidance and unflappable love carried Erik through more than one scrape, and he missed him every day.

Only six months apart in age, Erik and his cousin Craig held a bond like brothers. Having lived together as toddlers, each spent time in speech therapy unraveling the secret language that only they understood.

The two shared a love of hockey and exotic wood…and Craig lovingly handcrafted the box that will hold Erik’s ashes, until it will eventually

be shared with those of Erik’s best dog, Dex. Erik was blessed to be surrounded by loving cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and friends near and far, who championed him, fought for him, and supported him throughout his life.

Erik will be remembered always as the hard-working, generous, young man who loved the simple things in life: his family, his home, and his dog.

District 88 shared the following highlights of the first day back to school for Transition students: • The Transition Program welcomes 56 students this year.

• The Transition Program plans to open its Perks & Possibilities Café after Labor Day, which will offer a variety of new menu items. Students in the Transition Program help set up the café, and several of them stay for job training. The café is entering its

ninth year and will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday in the Addison Public Library. The café is successful because of generous donations from the community.

• This year, Transition Program students will experience community-based learning opportunities such as joining recreational leagues and going to museums, theatre performances and other venues to develop life skills. They also will have guest

speakers to learn about services available in the community and to increase independent living skills.

• Students in the Transition Program receive job training at more than 33 vocational sites. The program is always looking for new job-training sites.

Svitak said he will host the event annually and has made it his life’s goal to increase suicide awareness and help parents and loved ones identify the signs before it is too late.

Mazzochi added that she will continue to work with and support stakeholders in the community to ensure access to resources that can help those struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Willis to act on Rauner vetoes of firefighter legislation State Rep. Kathleen Willis, (D-Addison) has announced that she intends to act on behalf of Illinois firefighters and first responders who supported four different measures vetoed by Governor Bruce Rauner.

“In one week, Governor Rauner has vetoed four bills designed to honor, strengthen and protect everyone’s hometown heroes – firefighters and first responders,” said Willis. “Instead of working with the General Assembly to support working fam-

New law takes aim at sexual harassment buyouts A new law will require taxing bodies to notify the public if they enter into a severance agreement with an employee or contractor that has been accused of sexual assault or discrimination.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) championed House Bill 4242, which will apply to schools, community colleges, units of local government and other taxing bodies. This measure was signed into law on Thursday.

“This will put a stop to using taxpayer dollars to line the pockets of administrators and employees who are guilty of sexual harassment or discrimination,” he said. “The Me Too Campaign movement continues to be an essential effort to push our society toward a zero-tolerance atmosphere. This law moves Illinois a step in the right direction.”

The law requires the taxing body to notify the public within 72 hours of their entry into the agreement.

The notification would include the name and title of the person receiving the payment, the amount of the payment, and whether the reason for the severance was for alleged sexual harassment or sexual discrimination.

“This has been going on too long and it’s time we put a stop to it,” Cullerton said. “This law promotes government accountability and transparency—two things we need more than ever.”

House Bill 4242 is a response to a separation agreement entered into

by Des Plaines Elementary District 62 with Superintendent Floyd Williams Jr. Williams received a buyout of $127,000 after the school district received several complaints alleging sexual harassment. The separation agreement prohibited the district and Williams from disparaging each other and prevented the district from mentioning the sexual harassment allegations in reference letters.

House Bill 4242 passed the House and Senate with bipartisan support and goes into effect immediately.

Willowbrook hosts third annual Silver and Blue Community Night On Aug. 17, the football field at Willowbrook was filled with Warrior Pride, as many students, parents/ guardians and community members came together to celebrate the beginning of the 2018-19 school year with the 3rd annual Silver & Blue Community Night. The events featured a showcase of the schools’ athletic teams and extracurricular activities.

During the evening, Willowbrook had a soccer scrimmage and a football scrimmage; performances by the Marching Band, Color Guard, Cheerleading Team and Poms Team; and introductions of the fall sports teams. The Villa Park Youth Warrior Football and Cheerleading teams also were announced to the crowd.

The community nights were sponsored by the District 88 Foundation, which raises funds to benefit both Addison Trail and Willowbrook students. Addison Trail boys soccer team splits first two games Blazers down Chicago Curie 7-0; Squad adds six academy players

The Addison Trail boys soccer team split its first two games of the 2018 season.

The Blazers opened play with a 2-1 loss to Lake Park. “It was a great game between two really good teams in the area,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “We hit the post twice and fell just short. I was pleased with our effort, intensity and game play.”

Addison Trail rebounded nicely to down Chicago Curie 7-0 to start its Joe Novy tournament.

Dini, in his seventh season, has experience coming back from a 2017 team that went 6-12-4 and was 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Senior forward-midfielder Melvin Mora scored six goals and four as-

sists last year on his way to all-conference and all-sectional accolades.

The three-year varsity starter had nine career goals and 11 assists heading into the season.

Senior defender Eduardo Huerta also returns on the heels of an all-conference effort a year ago. He had two goals and one assist as a junior. Classmate and fellow defender Matthew Moran also is back and also earned all-WSC Gold plaudits.

Senior midfielder Lukas Rodriguez (2 goals, 3 assists) and senior forward Luis Silva (2 goals, 2 assists) also return, along with senior goalkeeper Sam Sandoval (10 starts in 2017 with a 2.10 goals-against average).

Addison Trail is heavy on the reinforcements this year with a large contingent of players returning to high-school soccer after playing academy last year. That list includes senior midfielder Julio Acosta, junior midfielder Leo Acosta, sophomore midfielder Anthony Hernandez (Chi-

cago Fire Academy last year), junior midfielder Martin Murillo and junior goalkeeper-defender Ernesto Padua.

“Our depth is our biggest strength,” said Dini. “We have 11 seniors, six juniors and one sophomore on varsity. We have another three or four players on JV that easily could be varsity players. We were able to get six players this season that played only academy last year so our talent level is much improved from last season. Also, with our 11 seniors, I have seen great leadership and a determination to have a good season.

We are very excited about this group of players. We also have a lot of players who can play all over the field so our versatility is going to be important, depending on our opponent for specific matches.”

Dini said the team continues to work on its set pieces. “Our weakness right now is scoring on set pieces,” he said. “We have spent a lot of time over the summer and the first week of practice making this a priori-

ty for the season. With the strength of our schedule (Joe Novy tournament, PepsiCo tournament and the West Suburban Conference Gold Division slate) we know we will have to get some goals on set pieces to win those games.”

Dini said high hopes abound through the roster this fall. “We are very excited about this soccer season,” he said. “In 2016, we went 22-2. Melvin Mora started on that team as a sophomore and has been very vocal about getting the team back to a winning record. He knows what it takes and understands what

The Willowbrook boys golf team followed up a pair of recent tournaments with a 151-180 non-conference victory over Elmwood Park at par-32 Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

Junior Logan Rattana led the Warriors with a 35. Senior Joey Guthrie had a 38, as did senior Jackson Hathaway. Senior Taylor Sarovich finished with a 40.

The win came on the heels of Willowbrook competing in the St. Laurence (fourth place) and Addison Trail (12th place) invitationals.

“We have a lot of seniors on the team who are real good kids,” said Willowbrook coach Gary Walker.

“Definitely having these seniors being in their fourth year in the program has helped.”

Walker has two returning sectional qualifiers on the team in Guthrie and Sarovich. Rattana and Hathaway also have been playing well.

“We have those four guys who are doing really well,” said Walker.

Walker has been impressed with the efforts of Hathaway in particular so far this season.

“He has continued to improve,” he said. “He is extremely intelligent and can grind his way through a round.”

Walker liked how his squad performed in the two tournaments so far, particularly in the Addsion Trail event that featured 20 teams.

“I’m very pleased,” he said. “We went on the road to start and played well out of the gate. At Addison Trail we shot 344 and that tournament is crazy competitive. You look at things, and you are talking a couple strokes per guy extrapolated. If you lose by 12, that looks bad, but that’s only three strokes a guy on average.

I’m real happy with where we are going.”

Walker noted this year’s regional will be contested at Glendale Lakes.

“It comes down to the regional,” he said. “Last year the cut was 81 or 82.

We’re very happy and excited and are looking forward to conference and regionals.”

Willowbrook’s schedule heats up this week. The Warriors were slated to face Leyden in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division match on Monday and then head to the Oswego invitational on Tuesday before facing Hinsdale South in a conference match on Wednesday. The Warriors are slated to face Proviso East today in a WSC Gold contest.

“This is a crazy week,” said Walker. “September is going to be crazy as well. Right now, it’s the lull before the storm.”

goals in multiple areas by various players,” said Ruiz, in his second season as head coach. “You can’t replace an Angel Barriga, but you can make up by playing stronger as a team.”

Ruiz said the team has its sights set on numerous key goals this season.

“We would like to make a run at conference and get to the second round of the playoffs,” he said.
