Conroy legislation will enact live donors’ Bill of Rights State representative recently donated kidney to ex-husband

Legislation introduced by State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) will protect live organ donors from workplace retaliation and insurance policy denials while increasing awareness of live organ donation benefits.

“A person’s financial status should not prevent a lifesaving operation,” said Conroy. “This Bill of Rights ensures those who wish to give the ultimate gift will not suffer repercussions at work or face complicated insur-

ance challenges. So many people are waiting for the gift of life and through live donation, we can give it.”

The Live Donor Bill of Rights (House Bill 5933) provides better protections for donors while building public awareness through a threepronged plan, including: Employers may not retali• ate against an employee for requesting or obtaining a leave of absence to donate an organ, bone marrow or

blood; • Insurance companies will have bans on denying coverage and costs of premiums for living donors for life insurance, disability insurance and long-term care insurance policies; and • The Secretary of State will update public service announcements, websites and other media relating to live organ donation to educate the public on the benefits of live

organ donation and the impact of live organ donation on access to insurance.

A mother of four, Rep. Conroy recently donated a kidney to her exhusband who suffered from hypertension and was on dialysis. According to the United Network of Organ Sharing, more than 115,000 people are on the national transplant waiting list.

Sadly, 20 people die each day while waiting. Living donation eliminates

the need to be placed on the waiting list and provides better long-term survival rates.

“The whole process was much easier than I expected,” said Conroy. “If we can provide better protection for living donors and build awareness of this life-changing procedure, countless lives could be saved. For me, it was a gift for my boys. I feel like I saved five lives – my four sons and their father.”

1908 Springfield race riot led to the creation of the NAACP

After the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Mabel Hallam admitted she fabricated the accusation that George Richardson, a black man, had raped her.

One of the pre-eminent civil rights organizations was born from one of the worst moments in Springfield’s history.

In August 1908, a white mob, thwarted in an attempt to lynch two black inmates in the Sangamon County Jail, went on a rampage.

They destroyed dozens of blackowned businesses and homes in Springfield. Two black men were lynched and five white men died during the riot, with dozens more injured. Other deaths connected to the riots happened in the days prior to and after it ended.

Appalled that such an event took place in Abraham Lincoln’s hometown, civil rights activists in New York began meetings that led to the formation of the NAACP. For numerous reasons, notice-

able tension along racial lines existed among the 50,000 people who lived in Springfield in 1908. That tension boiled over in August, having simmered for at least a month after the first of two high-profile accusations were made against black men.

New to town On or near June 1, 1908, 17-year-old black teenager Joe James jumped off a freight train passing through Springfield. Police ordered him to leave but James stuck around, and was eventually arrested for loitering.

Late the evening of July 4, when he was granted a temporary parole from jail for good behavior, by James’ own account, he must have wandered drunk and fell asleep outside. That same night, an intruder resembling James’ description entered the Ballard home.

Alerted by his daughter Blanche’s screams, Clergy Ballard, a popular white mining engineer, caught up to the stranger outside the house. The two scuffled and Ballard returned bleeding profusely. He died the next day.

Ballard’s sons and other young men searched the neighborhood and found a sleeping James and beat him senseless. Police arrived and broke up the bludgeoning.

James denied knowing anything about the home invasion or Ballard’s injuries, still he was charged with the crime.

Perhaps the rage would have faded and James’ trial would have been held without incident had Mabel Hallam not falsely claimed a black man named George Richardson sexually assaulted and dragged

County Board approves referenda questions for November ballot The DuPage County Board voted unanimously Tuesday to put three tax-related referendum questions on the November 2018 General Election ballot.

Two of the questions seek voters’ opinions on revenue raising proposals impacting issues debated in Springfield. One asks voters to weigh in on a proposal to help reduce state debt. The other asks voters’ opinions on an alternative method to fund transportation projects. The third question focuses on the County’s Accountability, Consolidation, and Transparency (ACT) Initiative.

“Responses to these questions will

provide the Board with important feedback and guidance as various proposals are debated in Springfield,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “Our residents already face some of the highest property taxes in the nation. We welcome the input of DuPage County voters and believe it is important to let their voices be heard on these crucial issues.”

The referendum questions will appear on the ballot as follows: • “Shall DuPage County oppose the General Assembly instituting a property tax increase equivalent to 1% of your home’s value to help re-

tire state debt?”

• “Shall DuPage County oppose the creation of a statewide Vehicle Mileage Tax (VMT) which would tax DuPage County citizens based upon the number of miles driven annually?”

• “Shall DuPage County continue to dissolve and consolidate units of local government to reduce costs, increase efficiencies, and increase accountability?”

New law to reduce cost of small business ownership in Illinois According to State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), a new Illinois law championed will spare small businesses from paying outrageous late penalties. House Bill 4578, which was signed into law last week, will reduce late penalties from $300 to $100 for annual LLC report filings.

“This law will further the state’s commitment to energizing our economy,” Cullerton said. “I’m proud to work with my colleagues from both

parties to eliminate this hurdle for small businesses.”

Last year, Senate Bill 867 passed with bipartisan support to reduce a number of filing fees for LLCs to match those for corporations. This measure reduced the filing fees for the creation of an LLC from $500 to $150.

Cullerton also worked to lower the annual filing fee for LLCs from $250 to $75.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” Cullerton said. “Local businesses play a huge role in our communities and economy. We need to do whatever we can to encourage businesses to make Illinois’ their home.”

Second case of West Nile virus in DuPage County reported The DuPage County Health Department is reporting the second human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in DuPage County for 2018. An Aurora resident in her 30s became ill in late July.

A recent spike in mosquito samples testing positive for WNV caused the DuPage County Health Department to remind residents of the importance of protecting from mosquito bites and the risk of contracting the virus.

The best way to prevent WNV is to avoid mosquito bites and follow the four Ds of defense: Drain: Drain those items that collect standing water around your home, yard or business. Scrub and refill pet water dishes and bird baths regularly.

Defend: Use an insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors and reapply according to directions.

Dress: Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes when outside to cover the skin.

Dusk to Dawn: Wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.

Residents should check the Personal Protection Index (PPI) on the DuPage County Health Department’s website for the current WNV activity. The PPI ranges in risk level from zero-to-three, with zero being no activity and three announcing multiple human cases of WNV in DuPage County.

The current level is 3: High Risk, defined as high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, multiple

human cases. The recommended actions: Drain, Defend, Dusk to Dawn, Dress for the outdoors with long sleeves and pants.

The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. by Health Department staff during the surveillance season and will change to match the risk level determined for that period.

The key factors in determining the degree of WNV activity are temperatures and rainfall. In hot, dry weather, mosquitoes that carry the virus (primarily Culex mosquitoes) breed in stagnant water, like street catch basins and ditches, and multiply rapidly. WNV activity generally decreases in the fall when cooler temperatures arrive and especially after the first frost of the season.

Addison Aug. 14 Police said Taylor W. Wangler, 23, of Elmhurst, responded to the Addison Police Department for an outstanding Elmhurst warrant at around 8:44 a.m.

Aug. 12 Police said that during a well-being check in the 600 block of E. Lake at around 7:40 p.m., Karamjit Dhami, 69, of Rogers, Ariz., was found to have an outstanding DuPage County failure to appear warrant.

Adrian M. Soto, 25, of Elgin,

received local adjunctions for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, and also was charged with hit and run, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no valid driver’s license in the 500 block of Macie at around 9:20 a.m.

Villa Park Aug. 10 A 22-year-old Naperville man was charged with two counts of domestic battery, resisting a police officer and obstructing a police officer near Kenilworth and Myrtle at around 11:49 p.m.

Aug. 11 Janessa A. Lopez, 23, of Addison, was charged with DUI, and also was issued citations for improper lane usage and no insurance near Lake and Highview at around 1:25 a.m.

Aug. 9 A male juvenile from Villa Park was issued a local citation for possession of cannabis near Ardmore and St. Charles at around 1:28 a.m.

Aug. 10 Police said that during a DUI roadside checkpoint, near Lake and Maple at around 10:13 p.m., the vehicle of Efren Romero, 36, of River Grove, was stopped. According to police, Romero’s license was found to be revoked; he also had an outstanding failure to appear warrant.

He was charged with driving while license revoked.

Aug. 7 Nicholas Caccitolo, 19, of Lombard, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash, failure to give aid or information, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and improper lane usage in the 700 block of N. Ardmore at around 3:31 p.m.

Theft was reported at a store between 1 and 2 p.m. Police said that an unknown suspect stole an iPhone 6 from a customer’s shop-

1325 Joliet Street. Upon inspection of the object, Fire personnel discovered the object to be a human body. Fire personnel immediately contacted the West Chicago Police Department who began an investigation into the matter with the assistance of the Major Crimes Task Force.

The investigation led authorities to Alvarado, Brewer and Correa who were taken into custody the following day. It is alleged that at some point in time on Aug. 14, Alvarado and Brewer arranged to meet Guerrero near the West Chicago Public Library.

It is alleged that when they met, Alvarado approached Guerrero from behind and strangled him with a belt around his neck.

It is further alleged that at this same time, Alvarado and Brewer stabbed Guerrero multiple times in the neck. It is alleged that the pair then put Guerrero in their Jeep Cherokee, traveled to the location on Joliet Street and removed Guerrero from the Jeep. It is alleged that the pair had contacted Correa and asked him to bring gasoline to the Joliet Street location. It is alleged that when Correa arrived at the site, he gave the gasoline to Alvarado and Brewer and left the scene. It is further alleged that Alvarado and Brewer then poured the gasoline on Guerrero and lit him on fire. It is alleged that while on fire,

Guerrero got up and began to run away and that Alvarado and Brewer ran him over with their Jeep. It is further alleged that Alvarado and Brewer dragged Guerrero back to a fire pit at the location, re-lit him and placed a picnic table over him.

“I … thank the West Chicago Police Department and the Major Crimes Task Force for their truly outstanding work in identifying and apprehending the suspects in this case,” Berlin said. “The vicious brutality allegedly displayed by the defendants in this case is beyond imagination. I can’t begin to fathom the pain that Mr. Guerrero must have endured as his life was brutally taken from him. I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to Mr. Guerrero’s surviving family and friends on the loss of Mr. Guerrero.”

“To go from having nothing on a gruesome murder to charges filed against suspects in the case within a twenty-four-hour period is proof of just how committed we all are in DuPage County to justice and protection of the public,” Uplegger said.

All three defendants’ next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 13, for arraignment in front of Judge George Bakalis.

State senator puts an end to golden parachutes in Illinois A new Illinois law sponsored by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) will put a stop to golden parachutes for disgraced public employees.

Cullerton’s Senate Bill 3604 was signed into law last Tuesday by the governor, eliminating severance packages for employees that have been fired for misconduct and limiting government-paid severance packages to an amount no greater than 20 weeks of compensation.

“This is a commonsense reform that protects the public from bailing out corrupt actors,” he said. “It is plain and simple: If you betray the trust of DuPage County taxpayers, you will not be rewarded with taxpayer money. Handing out golden parachutes to discredited public officials is theft and this law will put a stop to it.”

The law was brought forward by Cullerton in partnership with the Better Government Association as part of their ongoing effort to fight the misuse of taxpayer dollars.

“Illinois officials took a big step forward by turning the Government Severance Pay Act into law,” said David Greising, the BGA’s President and CEO. “Taxpayers now can rest assured they won’t be paying for exorbitant golden parachutes to make public executives go away.

Government officials are frequently advised to grant rich severances in an attempt to head off employment litigation, so the bill is aimed at counteracting that trend, Cullerton said.

“The Government Severance Pay Act will set a clean, clear path that will eliminate those decisions for elected officials,” Cullerton said.

“Now is the time to get control of these huge buyouts and use good, taxpayer-focused judgement.”

Similar policies are in place in Florida and other states, said Cullerton, who continues to call for tougher regulations to stop state universities and community colleges from buying out administrators that are under investigation or found guilty of mismanagement.

This is another step in his mission to put an end to this wasteful practice.

“Our state cannot afford to waste a single penny, especially to help folks who treat taxpayers like their own personal piggy bank,” Cullerton said.

Senate Bill 3604 passed the Senate and House with unanimous support and goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

A new law championed by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) will make it easier for veterans to obtain an official veteran designation on their state identification cards.

Cullerton’s House Bill 4332 was signed into law Sunday, allowing an identification card issued under the federal Veterans Identification Card Act of 2015 to be used as verification for a veteran’s designation on a state ID or license.

“This commonsense law will streamline the process for Illinois’ veterans,” he said. “Our veterans have already jumped through hoops and filled out various forms to receive a federal designation – they should not have to complete a redun-

dant process to receive state approval.”

Cullerton served as an infantryman in the Army from 1990 to 1993.

He continues to use his military experience to champion commonsense legislation to help military veterans, personnel and their families.

“Our returning heroes should not have to go through additional red tape when they return home,” he said. “It is our duty to ease their transition back to civilian life by utilizing practical procedures.”

This measure is supported by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation.

House Bill 4332 passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support. It goes into effect on January 1, 2019.

In high-school football, experience is akin to a precious metal.

And Addison Trail football coach Paul Parpet Jr. is in possession of a large quantity of precious metals

heading into the opening of the 2018 season Friday.

The Blazers have experience returning on both sides of the ball as they look to improve on last year’s 4-5 record.

Willowbrook boys golf team fourth at St. Laurence Warriors girls golf team looking to take the next step

The Willowbrook boys golf team started its season at the St. Laurence Invitational held at the par-71 Lincoln Oaks Golf Course in Crete.

The Warriors finished fourth out of 12 teams with a score of 325.

Joey Guthrie, a sectional qualifier as a junior in 2017, fired a 77 and earned a seventh-place finish out of 72 golfers in the field.

Logan Rattana, a junior, added a 79 to give Willowbrook two sub-80 scores on the 18-hole track.

Jackson Hathaway shot an 81, while Taylor Sarovich shot 88 to round out the Warriors’ card. Also competing for Willowbrook were Josh Lata (92) and Utah Keehner, who shot a 93.

The Warriors then headed to the competitive 20-team Addison Trail Invitational held at Joliet Country Club.

Willowbrook finished 12th in the field with a 344 score.

Guthrie and Rattana each shot 83s

for the Warriors. Sarovich chipped in an 84, while Hathaway shot a 94.

Also competing for Willowbrook were Lata (102) and Keehner (100).

Willowbrook is off this week, but returns to action Monday, Aug. 27 with a busy schedule. The Warriors head to Leyden for a West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet on Aug. 27, before heading to Blackberry Oaks on Aug. 28 against Oswego. Willowbrook travels to Carriage Greens on Oct. 29 to face Hinsdale South in a WSC Gold match. The Warriors host Proviso East on Aug. 30 before heading to the Fenton Invitational at White Pines on Sept. 1.

Willowbrook girls golf The Willowbrook girls golf team returns junior Julianna Paulsen and sophomore Peyton Mitrick from last year’s team.

Mitrick placed 14th at the West Suburban Conference junior-varsity meet.

Freshman Emma Rattana is new to the team this season.

“The strength of this year’s team has to be perseverance,” said Willowbrook coach Jim White. “They have a commitment to get better and they seek opportunities to correct bad habits.”

White said Rattana, the freshman, has a bright future ahead of her. “Keep an eye on Emma,” he said. “She has played multiple tournaments with the IJGA and is ready to make a mark on the conference.”

White added this year’s group is out to make progress throughout the season. “It’s a short season with a lot of matches,” he noted. “The team wants to compete at a more competitive level and find ways to win more matches this year.”

The Warriors faced Glenbard North and Hinsdale South earlier this week.

The Warriors are scheduled to host Addison Trail in the annual District 88 meeting today at 4 p.m.

Willowbrook also is hosting its own invitational Saturday at Twin Lakes in Westmont.

Addison Trail girls volleyball team looks ahead to upcoming season Blazers loaded with returning talent

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team has been in the top tier in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division the last three years.

In fact, during that time frame, the Blazers have won a conference title and finished second and third.

Coach Dan Styler now would like to see his squad get back to that championship form.

“We played in the top three in conference the last three seasons,” he pointed out. “Our expectation is to compete for a conference championship and maintain our position as a top-tier team in the West Suburban Gold.”

Fenton went 16-21 overall last year and 4-2 in WSC Gold play to earn a third-place finish. The Blazers took second at the Willowbrook tournament last year.

Back for Addison Trail are seniors Nina Muell (5-7, OH) and Sam Pociecha (5-6, S) along with juniors Jessica D’Ambrose (5-6, OH), Amy Reyes (5-2, S) and Katrina Bielanski (5-7, RS).

Muell has started her freshman year and led the team in kills a year ago with 204. Pociecha and Reyes split the setting duties last year.

Bielanski started the second half of the season as a sophomore.

D’Ambrose also has started since freshman year and had success this summer on the club circuit where she was named an All-American libero in the 16 Aspire Division during nationals for her Sports Performance club team.

Key newcomers include junior Pauline Wirbicki (5-4, libero) and sophomores Mia Johnson (MB-OH) and Ally Severino (5-9, MB).

“We certainly are not going to overpower most teams this year,” said Styler. “As always, our success will rely upon our ability to be a strong ball-control team. Returning both six-rotation outsides will boost the comfort level on our side of the net this season. However, our potential to grow this season as a team will follow the lead of our newcomers contributing in their new roles.”

Styler likes the advancement of his team’s rhythm and timing on

offense. “We should have better balance this year with our offensive attack options because we return both setters and three primary pin hitters,” he explained.

And Styler is seeing progress on defense. “We are making great strides,” he said. “Our defensive mechanics and schemes we are focusing on will take time to evolve.

The cornerstone of our defense is effort. We’ve established a solid foundation built upon effort. We expect to get better each match in this facet of the game.”

Addison Trail is no slouch at the service line either. “Our players have made a unified commitment to be a strong team at the service line,” said Styler. We think we can establish an edge in each match with our capacity to put pressure on the opposing side of the net with our serving.”

Focus is another improvement category Styler is happy about. “Our collective focus to improve is better than last season,” he said. “Our collective focus to win more matches this year is better than last year.”

“We have a lot of experience,” said Parpet Jr. “Anytime you can say you have three offensive linemen and your quarterback (returning), that’s good experience. I really like this senior group. They work hard and that makes coaching easy when you have guys who are working hard and want to be successful.”

Nick Daudelin gives the Blazers an experienced signal-caller. “I like that Nick is a dual threat with throwing and carrying the football,” said Parpet Jr. “He will be a central piece of the offense and it always helps when you have three returning linemen coming back to block in front of him.”

Switching to the other side of the football, the Blazers welcome back Nick Nasti (linebacker), Sammy Retondo (linebacker after playing in the secondary a year ago), Kevin Catano (defensive back), Pablo Mosely (defensive back) and Michael Ruffieri (defensive line). Proviso West transfer Damien McCraney will help the defensive line.

Ionikov and Vince Daudelin also will play on defense, as will Daniels at an outside linebacker position.

“Those guys will be helpful on the defensive side of the ball,” said Parpet Jr. “I think our defense goes back to the whole theme of the senior class,” said Parpet Jr. “We have above-average speed on defense and we have a lot of experience back in key spots.

They understand what it takes to play defense.”

Parpet Jr. sees a balanced West Suburban Conference Gold Division once again.

“To be honest, I have no idea who is the favorite,” he said. “I think it will continue to be like it has been the last three or four years and we’ll see an evenly matched conference across the board. We definitely are in the mix if we can stay healthy. I’m definitely pretty confident we can make a run for the conference championship.

It comes down to I like our 11 on offense, our 11 on defense and the 11 we put out there on special teams. We will be very competitive.”

Fenton at Maine East When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Maine East High School, Park Ridge 2017 records: Fenton 2-7, Maine East 1-8 Outlook: Fenton coach Matt Lynch likes where his program is headed as he starts his second year at the helm. The Bison return numerous key performers, including quarterback Kyle Cacioppo.

Maine East plays in the Central Suburban Conference North Division.

The Blue Demons won their first game last year and then lost the next eight, failing to score in double digits in seven of those eight setbacks (including failing to score a point in five of the games). This is a new game on the schedule this year for the Bison.

Hoffman Estates Conant at Addison Trail When: Friday, 7:15 p.m.

Where: Addison Trail High School, Addison 2017 records: Addison Trail 4-5, Conant 1-8 Outlook: Addison Trail faces a new opponent on the schedule in the form of Hoffman Estates Conant after Glenbard South joined the Upstate Eight Conference and will play an increased conference schedule. Conant competes in the Mid-Suburban Conference West Division. Addison Trail is coming off its third straight 4-5 season, but returns talent on both sides of the football, including quarterback Nick Daudelin.

Chicago Curie at Willowbrook When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Willowbrook High School, Villa Park 2017 records: Willowbrook 10-2, Chicago Curie 9-4 Outlook: Willowbrook is coming off two extremely successful seasons. The Warriors reached the state quarterfinals last year and won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title after going 8-4 the previous year and reaching the same quarterfinal round of the playoffs (18-6 over the last two years). Chicago Curie is new to the schedule this season for the Warriors. The long-time series with neighbor Glenbard East was discontinued after the Rams joined the Upstate Eight Conference and had an increased conference-game commitment. Chicago Curie plays in the Chicago Public, Illini (Red Bird) Conference. The Condors went 1-1 in the state playoffs and then went 1-1 in the Prep Bowl playoffs last season.

Fenton girls volleyball team has high hopes for 2018 Offense rounding into form quickly for Bison

Fenton girls volleyball coach Kelly Kleidorfer likes what she is seeing on the offensive side of the net thus far.

“Our offense is much farther along at this point than in any recent season,” she said. “We will be able to score from any position on the court.

A lot of girls have played together for a few years and it is really showing.”

Fenton is coming off a 2017 season where it won 13 matches and snapped a long conference losing streak. The Bison finished seventh in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division a year ago.

Back for the Bison are senior middle blocker Vicky Krzyszkowski, who was an all-conference selection after amassing 188 kills and 47 blocks.

Senior outside hitter Agata Kukielko had 54 aces, 129 kills and 134 digs last year. Senior setter Mackenzie Miller also is back. She posted 440 setting assists in 2017.

Senior libero Ashley Lira had 122 digs last year, while junior middle blocker Julianna Krebasch had 135 kills.

Key newcomers to the team include juniors Izabella Faron (outside hitter), Sydney Minard (outside hitter-right-side hitter), Britania Aguilar (right-side hitter-middle blocker) and Becky Millard (right-side hitter-middle blocker), along with sophomore defensive specialist Claira Panos.

Kleidorfer also likes the progress the team is making on defense. “Defense is looking solid,” she said. “We are getting a lot of touches on balls at the net and when balls get to the back row, our defense is able to make a play. We have a lot of depth in the back row so we just need to find the ones each match that are performing.”

The coach added Fenton’s key strong suit right now is in the middle.

“Vicky and Julianna both are playing really well and both have played club at a high level,” said Kleidorfer. “It is going to be a lot of fun watching them continue to develop. Vicky and Julianna both have an array of hits they can use to score points for us.

They also are doing an amazing job as blockers in the middle.”

Miller is now in her fourth season as a varsity setter. “Mackenzie has

Fenton football team ready to move even further ahead Fenton coach Matt Lynch is a big subscriber to the fact a new season really means a new season.

“The one thing all varsity highschool football coaches know is no matter who you have coming back, you have to start from the beginning,” he said.

But Fenton’s beginning in 2018 is a tad bit different than the 2017 beginning in Lynch’s first season at the helm in Bensenville.

“It’s nice to have guys who have been in the system here now,” said Lynch. “Players and coaches had the opportunity last year to get to know who I am. I had to come in and assimilate to the culture and get to know the kids. Now we are more comfortable with each other.

Fenton, which went 2-7 last year, returns four starters on offense, led by three-year starting quarterback Kyle Cacioppo. Also back are wide receiver Diamon King, lineman Jeff Andrews and lineman Louis Rago.

Others who will help the Fenton offense include the likes of juniors Ethan Doliente (running back), John Salgado (wide receiver), Andre Bess (wide receiver) and Ethan Queyquep (wide receiver).

“I like the offensive scheme we run,” said Lynch. “The learning curve this year has been reduced. With the learning curve reduced, we’ve been able to put more of the offense in. We had to water it down last year because of the learning curve. This year we’ve been able to implement the full offense.”

The Bison are in even better shape on the other side of the ball in terms of returning starters. Fenton returns seven starters with Cesar Bermudez (linebacker), Ivan Lozada (defensive back), Jimmy Deckert (defensive

line), Doliente (linebacker), Miguel Garcia (defensive line), Gio Mendoza (linebacker) and Andrews (linebacker).

Key newcomers on defense include Andre Reed (defensive back) and Nick Herringer (defensive back).

“I like our competitiveness on defense,” said Lynch. “I like our willingness to fight hard out there. It’s the same thing defensively. We didn’t have the opportunity last year to put in our full defensive scheme. Now we get to open up the defensive playbook a little more. We’re fortunate to have seven starters coming back. That always helps.”

Lynch said the team’s goal is simple this season. “I want to compete every day,” he said. “Our goal is to get 1% better each day as we climb that mountain. Every day here the kids are working extremely hard. We go in every day and there is not one instance where they have not given us their best effort. They are competing and getting better in all aspects. I’m extremely proud and pleased with the kids.”

Fenton switches over to the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division this season where it will play the likes of St. Edward, Chicago Christian, Ridgewood, Elmwood Park and Guerin Prep. Fenton’s conference crossover game is with newcomer Wheaton St. Francis.

“This is new territory for us,” said Lynch. “We have to go compete and play in it. We have to get an understanding of the new conference because we haven’t played most of these teams and gone against these coaches.

We’re taking a wait-and-see approach on the conference.”

As Lynch is about to head into his second opening game as Fenton’s head coach this Friday in Park Ridge against Maine East, he’s happy where the program is sitting right now in

terms of progress made since he took over.

“We’ve done a lot of stuff to move the program forward,” he said. “I’m pleased with where we are going.”

EAG presents ‘An Artist’s Changing View’

Terrance Johnson presents exhibit of acrylics, mixed media works

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) is currently hosting a solo exhibit, An Artist’s Changing View featuring original paintings and mixed media art by Terrance Johnson.

Largely a self-taught artist, Johnson refuses to be categorized as having one type of artistic style. Instead, he embraces the evolving nature of his work, which has moved through disparate phases over time as the artist and the world around him have changed.

“I jokingly told my friend that I thought of myself as a ‘distortionist,” Johnson said. “My works always begin with figurative images, classical or contemporary, and lead to some kind of distortion, often dictated by the act of painting itself...”

His artistic influences include his background in the theatre, the digital age, and even his interest in Buddhism.

An artist’s opening reception was held on Friday, Aug. 17 in the Elm-

hurst Artists’ Guild Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

The show runs Aug. 12 through Sept. 7. EAG Gallery hours at the Elmhurst Art Museum: Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $12 adults, $10 seniors, free for EAM and EAG members, students and children under 18. Rep. Willis condemns the proliferation of gun sanctuary counties State Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison has filed a state resolution to counter the wave of local declarations establishing “gun sanctuary counties.”

“I have been deeply concerned by the actions of several county boards in Illinois that have passed resolutions declaring that they will prohibit the enforcement of new gun laws passed by the General Assembly,” said Willis. “County board members are required to take an oath of office that includes a vow to uphold the Constitution of the State of Illinois. Instead, some are passing resolutions intended to set aside legitimate state law.”

The resolution challenges the legitimacy of county declarations and names each county action as a “shameless political stunt which undermines the rule of law and threatens the safety of all Illinois citizens.”
