Surrounded by family, friends and colleagues, Deanne Mazzochi of Elmhurst was sworn into office Tuesday, July 24, as the new State Representative for Illinois’ 47th Legislative House District.

She took her oath of office outside of Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College, a few miles from where she was raised in Villa Park and six blocks from her Elmhurst home.

District 88 receives funding to benefit student-musicians Donation comes from JCS Fund of DuPage Foundation

At Addison Trail and Willowbrook high schools, there is a legacy and a tradition of excellence in the schools’ music departments. During the past school year, both buildings were awarded Young People’s Music Initiative Grants to ensure that level of success continues. The grant is a donation from the JCS Fund of the DuPage Foundation.

Man sentenced to 21 years for gas station robbery

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that a Willowbrook man has entered a plea of guilty to holding up a Shell gas station last summer.

Tyrone Hammond, 26, of Lilac Lane, appeared in court on Tuesday, July 24, where he entered a guilty plea to one count of Armed Robbery with a Firearm (Class X Felony) in front of Judge Robert Miller.

On August 1, 2017, Hammond appeared in Bond Court where bond was set at $500,000 with 10% to apply. He has remained in custody since that time.

Last week’s charges stem from allegations that on July 14, 2017, at approximately 9:09 p.m., Hammond entered the Shell gas station located at 8226 Cass Avenue in Darien. Once inside the store, Hammond brought cookies to the clerk working at the cash register to purchase. Once the clerk opened the drawer to the register, Hammond pulled out a gun, pointed it at the clerk and shouted “everything, everything” at the clerk. The clerk gave Hammond approximately $450 from the register. Following the robbery, Hammond fled the scene on foot. The Darien Police Department conducted an investigation into the robbery in which Hammond was identified as a suspect and subsequently taken into custody.

“Threatening a man at gunpoint who is trying to make an honest living will not be tolerated and anyone who engages in this type of brazen behavior will face significant consequences, as Mr. Hammond learned this afternoon,” Berlin said.

Hammond will receive credit for the 358 days he has already served in custody. He will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Tom Cullerton helps kick off DuPage County Fair State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) helped kick off the DuPage County Fair this past week with a guest appearance at the annual event.

An avid advocate for preserving the county fair tradition, Cullerton joined the DuPage County Fair Association at the event.

The DuPage County Fair was open from July 25 to July 29 at the fairgrounds located in Wheaton.

“The DuPage County Fair is a true testament to the hard work and dedication our Fair Association has put into maintaining this 63-year-old tradition,” Cullerton said. “If you are looking for something to do this weekend, I encourage you to stop by the fair grounds for a fun-filled time.”

The Fair Association is a not-forprofit volunteer organization that manages and owns all of the buildings and infrastructure on the site. The fair does not utilize county or government funding to maintain buildings and organize the fair week.

The DuPage County Fairgrounds, established in 1955, is dedicated to “Preserving Our Past to Protect Our Future.” The association hosts the annual DuPage county fair and many shows and expos throughout the year.

“The county fair serves as a reminder for DuPage residents that agriculture is a key component of Illinois’ economy,” Cullerton said.

Willowbrook’s Maxwell Polanek (class of 2019) recently earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36. On average, only about one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2017, only 2,760 out of more than 2 million graduates who took the ACT earned a composite score of 36.

“Your achievement on the ACT is significant and rare,” ACT Chief Executive Officer Marten Maxwell Roorda said in a letter to the students who reached Polanek this accomplishment. “While test scores are just one of multiple criteria most colleges consider when making admission decisions, your exceptional ACT composite score should prove helpful as you pursue your education and career goals.”

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. It consists of tests in English, math, reading and science, each scored on a scale of 1 to 36. A student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores.

rambunctious fifth-graders scrambled to the top of the 100-foot-high Monks Mound to get a great view of the Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis and burn off energy at the end of their class field trip to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site.

Before climbing Monks Mound, the Gardner Elementary students from Waterloo, Illinois, toured the historic site’s spacious interpretive center in Collinsville, Illinois, and learned how Native Americans based at the mounds conducted trade with people in other regions, including the Great Lakes for copper and the Gulf of Mexico for seashells.

“People from around the world come here to see the Cahokia Mounds, and it’s right in our backyard,” said Amy Wagenknecht, one of the students’ teachers.

The students were among the estimated 300,000 people who visit the state historic site each year.

Monks Mound was built by Native Americans, who are now known as members of the Mississippian culture. It is the largest pre-Columbian, earthen structure in all of North and South America, said Bill Iseminger, the assistant site manager who has worked at the Cahokia Mounds site since 1971.

It also is one of the 80 earthen mounds remaining in the area, with 70 of the mounds protected within the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, which encompasses 2,200 acres. There originally were 120 mounds at the site.

At the height of the Cahokia

Mounds, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 American Indians lived at the site, and perhaps twice as many lived in the region, Iseminger said.

Cahokia was the largest prehistoric American Indian settlement north of Mexico. It’s known as “America’s first city,” and it is believed to have had a population larger than London in 1250.

Archaeologists are not sure why the Mississippians formed this major settlement around 1000 to 1050, and they don’t know why the site was abandoned by 1400, Iseminger said.

“The urban nature of Cahokia is what intrigues a lot of archaeologists and historians; trying to understand how it began and how it ended and that middle period is all something we’re all constantly trying to unravel,” Iseminger said. “We don’t know what they called themselves or this place. It’s not really a tribe, it’s an urban area.”

Archaeologists have raised questions about why the city rose from the Mississippi River flood plain near present-day St. Louis: Was it a powerful leader? Was a new religion developing? Was it inspired by a supernova seen worldwide in 1054?

Iseminger said a combination of motivations likely caused the Cahokia site to be abandoned.

“They probably depleted most of the natural resources in the area,” Iseminger said.

Other possible causes include: a few bad leaders running the city; reduced crop production caused by extended droughts and cooling temperatures; flooding; nutritional problems from an overdependence on a diet of corn; a contagious disease could have spread with so many people living in close proximity; and a gradual breakdown of the ruling system with some challenging the authorities.

“Where they went or what tribes they became is not clear,” Iseminger said.

In the 1800s, the mounds were named after the Cahokia tribe that lived in the area when European settlers arrived. But that tribe had moved into this area long after the mounds site had been abandoned.

Iseminger said French settlers often named their villages after American Indians who lived nearby, and that’s the case for Cahokia, Illinois,

which is about 11 miles from the Cahokia Mounds site, which is in Collinsville.

Monks Mound is named after a group of French Trappist monks who lived near the mound on another mound from 1809 to 1813.

Many visitors think the mounds are burial sites, but Iseminger said most of the mounds were actually platforms for buildings. A large building on top of Monks Mound likely was the home of the site’s leader.

But archaeologists have found burials in Mound 72, where the remains of more than 280 people have been found.

been sacrificed and buried in these mass graves,” Iseminger said.

“We don’t know why; all we see is the end result,” he said. The sacrifices occurred between 1050 to 1100.

“One burial seemed to be an individual of great importance; he was buried with the remains of other individuals on what appeared to be a platform of shell beads,” according to the Cahokia Mounds website.

Archaeologists have found evidence of sun-based calendars comprised of red cedar posts in large circles on the Cahokia site. The circles were dubbed “Woodhenge” in a nod to Stonehenge in England.

In 1985, posts were erected at the Cahokia site to replicate one of the original circles.

Visitors can also see a reconstruction of what the wooden wall blockading Cahokia might have looked like.

The Cahokia site was protected by the state in 1920s and in 1982 was named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Timothy Pauketat, an archaeologist and professor of anthropology for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, urges the U.S. government to give federal protection to the Cahokia Mounds.

Pauketat, who published a book about the mounds titled “Cahokia: Ancient America’s Great City on the Mississippi” in 2009, said many Illinoisans do not recognize “what a tremendous historical phenomenon existed in the southwestern part of the state.”

“What happened there is comparable to the birth of civilization in Mes-

opotamia or Mesoamerica, except that Native Americans did it here and in ways culturally and contextually unique,” he said in an email.

“The scope of the preservation problem is so great, which is why we need national involvement,” Pauketat said. “The state of Illinois can’t do it all.”

Cantigny Park to celebrate France Aug. 11-12 ‘French Picnic Under the Stars’ precedes ‘Annual French Connection Day’ The French theme commemorates an important chapter in the life of Robert R. McCormick, Cantigny’s benefactor. In 1918, at age 37, Colonel McCormick commanded an artillery unit in the Battle of Cantigny in France as a member of the U.S. Army’s First Division. It was America’s first significant victory in World War I. Upon returning to Wheaton, the Colonel renamed his estate after the tiny French village that he and his

fellow soldiers helped liberate from German occupation.

In his will, McCormick (18801955) established Cantigny “as a public park and museum for the recreation, instruction and welfare of the people of the State of Illinois.”

Cantigny Park is open every day this summer from 7 a.m. to dusk.

GreenMan Theatre offers a storytelling class starting Aug. 4. This will be a three-session class that will then transition into a show called “Spooky Stories and Songs of the Season” for performances in October. Students interested in the class do not have to participate in the October performances.

The class will meet Saturdays, Aug. 4, 11, and 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Fee for the class is $25 for GreenMan members and $30 for non-members. Memberships will be available for the 2018-19 season.

Makeup sessions can be arranged for students who may miss one of the sessions.

The class will meet at GreenMan’s performance space in Elmhurst at

232 S. York St. There is ample free parking on site. The class is geared to all levels, beginners to advanced. Interested participants can reserve a spot or ask questions by contacting the theatre at 630-464-2646 or the teacher at thomdav@comcast.net.

In the class, students will learn about telling a variety of story types, including Traditional Tales, Literary Tales, Personal Stories, and Urban Legends. Watching my stepfather slowly deteriorate as he got older was the main reason I opened Dynamic Strength.

Addison Trail football team opens season against Conant Yearly contest with Glenbard West to be held in early September

The Addison Trail football team has a few new looks to its 2019 schedule.

Gone in the long-time season-opening game against Glenbard South. The Blazers, instead, will open play at home on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m., against Conant High School from Hoffman Estates.

The Blazers then continue their home-stand by hosting York on Aug. 31 as part of the West Suburban Conference crossover series.

Addison Trail’s traditional other non-conference game against Glenbard West, which in years past has occurred toward the tail-end of the season, now will be played in Week 3 on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m. in Glen Ellyn.

After the Glenbard West game, it’s six weeks in a row of WSC Gold Division action, starting Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at home against District 88 neighbor Willowbrook.

Fenton senior-to-be Isa Lozada keeps herself plenty busy.

Lozada is a three-sport athlete, playing volleyball, basketball and softball. When asked what her favorite sport is, she didn’t hesitate.

“Softball,” she said. “I love the game. I love the competitiveness. It’s also not as fast-paced as others and it takes a lot to succeed.”

Lozada has it nailed when it comes to the succeeding part. She’s fresh off a junior season for coach Dave Mello’s Bison squad where she led the team in hits (46), doubles (10), home runs (5), RBI (29), runs scored (48),

walks (17) and stolen bases (21) en route to earning all-conference honors. Lozada has been on the Fenton varsity softball team since freshman season.

“My favorite part of softball is probably base running,” she said. “I like to get down and dirty. It feels good when you get a nice hit and it feels good when you come together as a team. Softball is a team sport where you need everybody to do their part to become good.”

Lozada added her fielding took a big step forward this season. “My defense has gotten better,” she said.

“I’ve been playing shortstop since I can remember. There’s always more room to improve, but I feel like I’m real high up there defense-wise.”

Lozada said she started playing softball around age 11, but played baseball for the five years prior through the Bensenville Boys and Girls Athletic Association.

“But I moved into softball because I didn’t want to get into it being highschool time and then have to switch over,” said Lozada, who played with the Downers Grove Rebels travel softball team last season.

Lozada said juggling three sports and academics isn’t that big of a deal.

“I love it,” she said. “It gives me something to do. I love being active rather than sitting around at home.”

In terms of her future, Lozada said she would like to play softball in college, “for sure.” She also would like to study to be a nurse, working with children if possible.

“My mom takes care of kids for day care,” she said. “I’ve gone in there a few times and helped take care of the kids. It looks like it would be good to take care of them when either they come into life or when they get sick and get them to a better place. I’d like to be a pediatric nurse or a neo-natal nurse. That’s what I want to go for.”

Lozada has taken advantage of her time at Fenton where she had all As freshman and sophomore year and had all As and two Bs her junior year.

“I have enjoyed my time at Fenton,” she said. “I love playing all of the sports. Softball will end for me next spring so that’s kind of where it all comes to an end and it will be time to move on to bigger and better things.”

Willowbrook boys basketball team gets plenty of summer work

Addison Trail is coming off a 2017 season where it went 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

In terms of its 2018 schedule, the Blazers will face only three playoff teams in the form of defending Gold Division champion Willowbrook, along with Hinsdale South and WSC Silver Division champion Glenbard

With a good number of graduation losses, it was important for the Willowbrook boys basketball team to get in as much work as possible during the recently completed summer season.

And it did just that.

“The summer went really well,” said Warriors coach Chris Perkins.

“We played at a ton of different places. We usually had two separate teams because we had a ton of guys out this summer. We made a lot of strides.”

At one point, Perkins noted he had

close to 22 players in the gym.

That allowed him to get in plenty of evaluation time coming off a 2017-2018 season where the Warriors graduated four starters and six or seven seniors, Perkins noted.

“We have to replace a lot of guys this season,” said Perkins.

Perkins had a few key takeaways from the summer. “Our speed and our depth,” he said. “Those were the two biggest things. This will probably be my fastest team and we are deep. We have a ton of guys who can go in and produce and make things happen. We played some different lineups to see who plays well together as well as figuring out our new style of play after losing Ethan

Elmhurst American Legion 17U team wraps up play

The debut of the Elmhurst junior American Legion Muddogs team was a big success.

Post 187, in its first season as a junior American Legion squad, ended up with a 17-12 overall record and advanced to the championship round of the Junior 2nd Division South playoffs.

Post 187 defeated Wheaton 12-10 in the consolation bracket to move back into the championship round of the double-elimination tournament.

In that contest, Elmhurst led 3-0 early only to have Wheaton tie it at 3-3 in the top of the third. The Muddogs then scored seven runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-3 lead. Wheaton cut it to 10-7 at one point before Post 187 scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Wheaton scored three in the top of the seventh to make it close.

Elmhurst had six hits and committed five errors. The two teams combined to score 22 runs on only 15 hits with a combined eight errors and 23 walks. Elmhurst took advantage of 15 Wheaton walks.

Tyler Gelsomino went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Elmhurst. Alexis Cotto scored two runs and had an RBI. Jose Alvarez had a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Nathan Kriz had two RBI

and two walks. Alanzo Howard had a run scored and two walks. Michael Hilgart went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks and two RBI. Massimo Cortez had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Nck DeSimone had a run scored and a walk. Ivan Lozada scored a run and walked twice.

Elmhurst stole nine bases in the game with Lozada leading the way with three.

Cotto was the winning pitcher. He went four innings and struck out four.

Alvarez earned the save. He pitched three innings and allowed one earned run while striking out two.

Post 187 then dropped an 11-1 game to Morris Post 294 in the championship round. Because Elmhurst was coming out of the consolation bracket, it would have had to beat Morris twice to advance to the state tournament.

In the Morris game, which occurred immediately after the Wheaton win, Morris led 5-0 after the first inning and 8-0 after two innings.

Morris had 10 hits. Post 187 was limited to four in the five-inning affair.

Gelsomino, Cotto, Alvarez and Howard each had a hit. Gelsomino scored Elmhurst’s only run. Gelsomino also had two stolen bases.

Pietrucha took the loss. Alvarez also pitched in the game.

“We did a lot of good things in the Wheaton game,” said Elmhurst manager Mike Biondo. “The second game against Morris was a little tough to try to find the energy to finish out.”

A new law to alert police and emergency professionals of missing veterans will take effect Jan. 1, thanks to State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park).

Cullerton’s House Bill 4212 expands the use of the Endangered Missing Person Advisory system known as the Silver Alert to veterans who are believed to have physical or mental conditions related to their service. It was signed into law on Friday.

Per the new law, the public would be notified when a high-risk veteran goes missing. The alert would be similar to Amber Alerts, which are already used by the state to locate missing children.

“Our veterans have put their lives in harm’s way to protect us. When our heroes return home, we need to find ways to look out for them,” Cul-

lerton said. “This new law will help us save lives.”

The effort is the latest in a long line of veteran protections put in place by Cullerton.

In 2013, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs released a study covering suicides from 1999 to 2010. It showed roughly 22 veterans were dying by suicide per day, or one every 65 minutes.

In response, Cullerton – who served as an Army infantryman from 1990 to 1993 – created and served as a chairperson on the Illinois Veterans Suicide Taskforce to help address the veteran suicide epidemic in Illinois.

Cullerton said this new law takes another step to ensure veterans receive the necessary resources when they return home.

“Veterans need to know they have people behind them and this law takes

a step toward accomplishing that,” he said. “I urge any veteran struggling with depression and suicide to take advantage of free state and federal resources. No one expects you to tackle these internal struggles alone.

There is help out there.”

Last General Assembly, Cullerton passed a series of laws to combat the veterans’ suicide epidemic, including a measure to expand the use of service animals to veterans suffering from PTSD. Cullerton urges veterans and their loved ones to call the confidential and toll-free hotline, 1-800-2738255 and Press 1, chat online, or send a text message to 838255 to receive confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Congressman Raja’s Education Bill passes House Offers training in cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, healthcare

On Wednesday, July 25, the House passed H.R. 2353, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. This legislation, led by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Congressman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (RPA), has now passed both the House and Senate unanimously and will be sent to the President for signature into law.

This legislation reauthorizes and modernizes the American career, technical, and vocational education

system for the first time since 2006.

There are currently 6.5 million unfilled jobs in the United States because employers simply cannot find workers with the applicable skills for the job. This bill will increase funding for the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Program by up to $1.3 billion annually, providing high school and post-secondary students with on-the-job training in fields such as cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare. It will require educators to

work with local businesses to design training programs for the in-demand skills needed today.

“I am thrilled by the passage of this major bipartisan legislation through both the House and Senate.

We’ve built overwhelming support for these investments in our workforce from both sides of the aisle, as well as from business and education leaders,” said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi.

Fulfilling a localized effort started by State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) back in 2015, the Governor has finally signed his sponsored legislation to dissolve the DuPage County Election Commission for more streamlined and cost-effective elections.

“Despite nearly all of Illinois operating elections through the County Clerk’s office, DuPage County is one of the only counties that uses an election commission,” said Nybo. “With this consolidation, DuPage County will be able to administer elections cost-effectively and better mitigate any possible errors in the election process. This initiative is long overdue and truly in the best interest of the County and its residents—and we will see immediate benefits.”

House Bill 5123, a longtime priority of Nybo’s, eliminates the current DuPage County Election Commission and replaces it with one that falls under the County Clerk. Nybo first initiated a proposal for this consolidation in 2015 when he submitted DuPage County’s duplicative election body for immediate review to the Local Government and Unfunded Mandate Task Force.

Nybo also says that with the in-

corporation of online and automatic voter registration, expansion of early voting, access to absentee ballots, and the reduction in the number of polling locations across the county (which DuPage County decreased

from 700 plus to fewer than 300 locations), there is less need for fulltime and year-round election personnel.

EAM presents The Point of the Dream

Steeves: ‘Every dream has a point, and every point has a dream’

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) will host The Point of the Dream, featuring original dot paintings by EAG Board member Peter M. Steeves in the EAG Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM), 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave. in Wilder Park It will be on display now through August 10. An opening reception was held on Friday, July 20.

Steeves, who lives in Valparaiso, Ind., and works in Naperville, is a self-taught artist with a career that has spanned over 25 years exhibiting throughout the Chicagoland area.

His work includes elements of surrealism, primitive symbolic and postmodern realism focusing on the emotion of images and pointillist dot

patterns. The subjects of the paintings are pulled from his subconscious and transferred to the canvas to allow both artist and viewer to analyze the meaning.

Unlike pointillist artists like Seurat, Signac and Van Gogh, who employed dots of paint (points) to create soft, impressionist images, Steeves’ pointillist style has evolved to be more akin to Australian Aboriginal art.

“What started out as an homage to the Australian Aboriginal art method of dot painting has grown to have a life of its own through my eyes and paints,” Steeves explained. “The dots went from being the background of traditional paintings to the focus of my

paintings.”

This is evident in “Dusk Dreaming,” a warm, ethereal composition in blue, green, white, black and purple that Steeves painted while working in Melbourne, Australia.

The dot patterns invoke a dream-like impression of the subject, allowing the viewer to focus on the emerging repetitious patterns. The multicolor dot patterns are captivating, warm and personal. The points provide movement to the sky, waves and water. The absence of points, negative space, is used to create a tree, cloud, human or architectural figure, as employed in “Night Forest II” and “The Long Way,” which evoke a forest after a fire, with black-

ened bare trees and a rich, vibrant undergrowth unleashed by the devastating, but nourishing, fire.

Steeves’ work brings out the imagery of our forgotten dreams.

“When we dream, there are no good or bad dreams; your imagination runs free,” he said. “Images that you recognize when awake take on different, deeper meanings in slumber. When you awake, you wish you could see, hear, or feel what you just experienced but you are left with a mere fragment.

“My goal is to permit viewers to explore their own sub-conscience as they are torn back to reality from a dream.

The driving force behind my art is that it is cheaper than therapy for both the

artist and the collectors!”

The Point of the Dream will travel to the Village Gallery in Valparaiso after it closes at the EAG Gallery. Steeves’ work has also been featured at The Free Artisans Gallery and the Southern Shore Art Assn., both in Michigan City, Ind., the Naperville Fine Art Center and throughout the Chicago area.

He participated in the CTA’s Art on the Tracks and the Built Art Festival in Chicago and has exhibited at Art Prize in Grand Rapids, Mich., every year since 2011. His work can also be seen at TerrapinHouseStudio.com.
