Push on to improve walking, cycling in Villa Park Survey, Master Plan in works

held on October 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Iowa Community Center to brainstorm ideas.

The various paths and options

currently available to Villa Park residents who wish to walk and bicycle for health or transportation are currently among the best in the area,

but they can still be improved, as the motto for the Master Plan says: “Get Involved, share your ideas on walking and biking in Villa Park.”

With the Prairie Path, Great Western Trail, Salt Creek Trail and soonto-be improved streets, Villa Park is well known as a bicycle and walking destination. This preeminence has evolved over the years without any real plan or direction. The natural location of the Garden Village and the unique paths available have organically grown the walking and biking reputation of Villa Park.

Now, the Village is seeking to take the next step and create a Master Plan to further improve access, safety and usage of the trails and sidewalks in town for bikers and pedestrians. “(The plan) will focus on improving connections to the Prairie Path, Great Western Trail, Salt Creek Trail and other local destinations,” according to the Village’s web site.

Additionally, the plan aims to “fill in gaps in the sidewalk network and make intersections safer for people traveling on foot or by bike.”

To facilitate this ambitious undertaking, Villa Park has partnered with Active Transportation Alliance, an organization dedicated to ‘increase safety and encourage physical activity.’ while ‘creating a world-class transportation network’ in the Chicago area.

According to Village Staff, the first step to an improved walking and biking experience in Villa Park is community involvement in the process.

Police Reports

Area Police Departments recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Addison Aug. 2 Giovanni B. Nardulli, 69, of Addison, was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property in the 200 block of N. Mill Road at around 8:12 p.m. Police said Nardulli exposed himself in public, and while in the booking room, he slammed a telephone to the ground, damaging the phone.

Aug. 1 Police said Giovanny Saucedo, 26, of Addison, had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for a traffic violation.

July 27 David Nunez-Gonzalez, 23, of Chicago, was charged with burglary at around 12:23 p.m. Police said the suspect entered upon the property of a car dealership and took merchandise without permission or authority.

Police said Rodolfo Balderas-Martinez, 35, of Rockford, had a failure to appear warrant out of the Hoffman Estates Police Department. Subsequent to investigating a traffic accident in the 100 block of W. Lake St. at around 7:21 p.m., he was additionally charged with failure to reduce

speed to avoid an accident and driving while license revoked.

Police said a 29-year-old Addison man had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for domestic battery.

Villa Park July 29 Disorderly conduct was reported at a restaurant at around 11:50 p.m.

Police said an unknown suspect pulled the fire alarm at the restaurant after being asked to leave.

Theft was reported at an entertainment center. Police said that between 1:15 and 4:30 p.m., an unknown suspect stole credit cards, cash and an ID from a purse that was inadvertently left unattended.

July 28 A 36-year-old Villa Park man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of N. Mission at around 11:37 p.m. That day, the same suspect also was issued a complaint and arrest warrant for two counts of domestic battery that reportedly took place on June 17.

Criminal damage was reported at a bus company. Police said that between 10:30 a.m. and 4:58 p.m., an unknown suspect scratched the hood of an employee’s car while the vehicle was parked in the lot.

July 27 Kyle J. Siebert, 31, of Villa Park, was charged with public indecency in the 300 block of W. North Ave. at around 1:06 p.m.

Theft was reported in the 300

block of W. North Ave. Police said that between 2:30 and 6 p.m., an unknown suspect stole a wallet from behind a desk at a vendor’s booth at a local market.

July 26 Rene Manuel G. Zerrudo, 57, of Bloomingdale, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, violation of driving restrictions, improper lane usage and no insurance in the 300 block of W. Roosevelt at around 2:07 a.m.

July 25-July 26 Criminal damage was reported at a church. Police said that on July 25, an unknown suspect damaged the “Little Free Library” box on the southwest corner of the lot. Book pages were also cut up from approximately 15 books. At 10:43 a.m. July 26, between five and 10 more books were found to be damaged with the pages cut up.

July 25 Jose M. Chavez, 44, of Villa Park, was issued local adjunctions for unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage and possession of alcoholic liquor in a public place in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 9:36 a.m.

Criminal damage was reported in the 400 block of W. Division. Police said that between 12 noon and 4:24 p.m., an unknown suspect put super glue in the door lock of a laundry room.

male suspect stole a vehicle that was parked in the lot with the keys left in the ignition. The vehicle was later recovered in Oak Brook with the assistance of Onstar.

July 24 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of E. Park at around 10 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect entered a vehicle parked in a driveway and removed $100 cash and personal information.

July 23 Marcos Montano-Figueroa, 35, of Villa Park, was charged with two counts of DUI, improper parking on a roadway, no valid driver’s license and no insurance near Roosevelt and Summit at around 4:04 a.m.

Eric Oanes, 29, of Addison, was charged with interference with police, possession of an alcoholic beverage in public and littering in the 300 block of E. Kenilworth at around 1:45 a.m.

Jorge Velasquez, 32, of Lombard, was charged with two counts of DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, speeding, improper lane usage and failure to use a turn signal when required near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 11:42 p.m.

July 22-July 23 A stolen vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. Third. Police said that between 5:30 p.m. July 22 and 11:30 a.m. July 23, an unknown suspect stole a black Chrysler Sebring that was parked in the roadway.

Criminal damage was reported in the 700 block of N. Bierman. Police said that between 9:30 p.m. July 22 and 12:59 a.m. July 23, an unknown suspect scratched a vehicle parked on the front lawn in the area.

July 22 Rebecca A. Garcia, 43, of Harwood Heights, received local adjunctions for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near North and Kramer at around 11:57 p.m.

Using catch phrases to pit folks throughout the state against each other is not leadership, it is posturing and it hurts our entire state. The governor agreed with 90% of the school funding legislation yet vetoed it. He called negotiating an outrageous tactic. I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner to find solutions for our state as I have done in the past. I encourage Governor Rauner to do the same.”

Princeton Ave. neighbors throw party for mailman

What do you do when a beloved member of the community retires?

Throw a party, of course!

When neighbors on South Princeton Ave. in Villa Park heard that mailman Bill McDonald was retiring after 30 years with the Post Office, they knew they had to send him off in style.

“Mailman Bill McDonald was one in a million,” said Jeanie Nicholson, who lives on Princeton, “He always greeted us with a smile on his face no matter how hot or frozen he was…he never complained!”

The neighbors got together and planned the party for Tuesday, Aug. 1 to coincide with the National Night Out. The two events were a natural fit according to Rich Biagioli, who built a mini-mailbox replica for the party.

“The National Night Out is a way for neighbors to interact and get to know each other. To help keep our town safe. Bill visited everyone on the block’s house everyday. He kept an eye out for anything unusual. He was a part of this community.”

Mid-year review shows continued strong economic indicators for DuPage County County boasts lowest unemployment and industrial vacancy rates in the region

Choose DuPage has released its 2017 Second Quarter Economic Indicators Report, showing continued success for business and industry in DuPage County during the first half of 2017. Maintaining the lowest unemployment rates in the region at just 3.3 percent, DuPage County’s skilled and educated workforce continue to present opportunities for job creators and entrepreneurs seeking to build, expand operations in the county. Data suggests DuPage County offers a business-friendly environment for a variety of industry sectors while the state and surrounding communities continue to navigate struggles with high taxes, pension challenges and a hostile

“DuPage office vacancy rates have held steady around 16-17 percent in 2017, with industrial vacancy rates running around 5.4 percent – the lowest industrial vacancy rate in the region,” said John Carpenter, president and CEO of Choose DuPage.

Impromp2, the abstract paintings of contemporary emerging artists, April Dippy and Andre Peraza, will be on display at the Park Art Center (PAC), 9 East Park Blvd., Villa Park, from August 12 through August 31, 2017, with the opening reception on Saturday, August 12 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

Impromp2 is a joint exhibit showcasing the abstract acrylic paintings of two artists, Andre Peraza and April Dippy, both members of Studios630, a collaborative community of local artists, writers, photographers, and musicians, based primarily in the western suburbs of Chicago.

Peraza channels his energy and

surges of creativity into artistic expression that takes many forms including acrylic paintings, mixed media, wood, pen and ink, found objects and sculpture. A graduate of the University of Illinois in Chicago with a B.A. in Art Design, he is at home in the world of abstract imagery as well as abstract thinking. Cuban born, Peraza is also a musician, Sound Healing Practitioner, Drum Circle Facilitator and Tarot Reader. “Most of my artwork deals with energy and the forces that move that energy. I explore spirituality and metaphysics through my abstract Soul Portrait series. I merge my musical background with the theme of life and death in the Rockin’ Skullz digital print series. My latest body of work cen-

ters on social observations.” He has a YouTube channel dedicated to his Soul Portrait series.

Inspired by nature, as well as international travel and her time spent studying painting in Hong Kong, Dippy finds that each piece of her abstract art goes through multiple stages of building and taking away of layers of paint and other media, before molding them into unique entities. Raised in the Chicago area, April has participated in national and local exhibitions since graduating from Judson University in Elgin and is active in the Chicago and suburban art community, as well as a design business owner, April Dippy Design.

Christine Lange, 47, of 7442 W. 56th Place, Summit, appeared in Bond Court yesterday morning where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. On March 23, 2017, an arrest warrant was issued for Lange. Lange was apprehended on Saturday, July 30.

Addison Trail boys basketball team enjoying reboot Blazers use summer season to integrate new talent

There are many new faces on the Addison Trail boys basketball team.

And that’s no worry for longtime Blazers coach Brendan Lyons, who graduated the vast majority of players from his 2016-2017 squad.

“This kind of reminded me of my first summer with the program where we had new kids,” he said. “We graduated pretty much everybody from last year. Everybody has new

roles and it’s pretty much a clean slate. A lot of different guys contributed in the summer. I thought we did OK this summer. Our numbers were good and we ended up playing fewer games than we have in the past.

The summer is for getting guys reps and getting a feel for what we have going into the new season. We accomplished those things.”

A number of recently graduated Fenton High School student-athletes will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

From the spring National Letter of Intent signing period, Angelo Duvall will continue his football career at the University of WisconsinStevens Point.

Bryan Larsen is headed to Aurora University to play baseball, while Cassidy Feddersen will compete in track and field at Elmhurst College.

Taylor Spizzirri will play softball at Aurora University, while Jenna Geraci is headed to Elmhurst College to play softball.

Noel Lopez will continue his soccer career at Division I Northern Illinois University, while Ethan Guerra and Javier Sanchez will play volleyball at Judson University in Elgin.

Patton at Drake Fenton alum Taylor Patton finished up her track and field career this season at Division I Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

In the classroom, Patton was named to the 2016-2017 Missouri Valley Conference honor roll. To qualify for the honor roll, a studentathlete must have recorded a minimum 3.2 grade-point average for a specified term, must have been a member of an athletics team and must have a minimum of 12 hours of enrollment during the fall.

In the high jump this season, Patton tied for 10th at the MVC championships in Wichita, Kan., with a leap of 5-1 3/4. She also took 13th with a mark of 5-1 at the Musco Twilight hosted by the University of Iowa.

Earlier, she was fourth in the high jump at the Arkansas Spring Invitational and took fifth at the Central Invitational.

Indoors this season, Patton was seventh in the high jump at the MVC championships and also took seventh at the Missouri Invitational and fourth at both the Messersmith Invitational and the Holiday Inn Invitational.

Echeverria at Concordia Fenton graduate David Echeverria has two track and field seasons under his belt at Concordia University Chicago where he is a thrower.

This year at the Ted Haydon Invitational outdoor meet he took 10th in the shot put with a throw of 38-0.

During the indoor season, Echeverria was fifth in the weight throw at 36-2 3/4 and also took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 35-10.

Last year, Echeverria took 10th at the NACC outdoor championships in the hammer throw with a mark of 111-5.

Also in 2016, he was sixth in the hammer throw (93-3) and sixth in the discus (96-7) at the Lewis Twilight meet.

Pugliese at Benedictine Brady Pugliese, a 2015 graduate of Fenton, finished his sophomore season on the Benedictine University baseball team in Lisle.

During his first two years at Benedictine, Pugliese has appeared in two varsity games and also has played on the junior-varsity squad.

“He’s our only real consistent contributor coming back on the varsity level,” said Lyons. “We have some other returners who saw a ton of time on the JV last year.”

Lyons said this year’s team will have a different look to it. “Based on what we saw in the summer, this team will have a different feel,” he said. “The tallest guy we had in the summer was 6-4. We’ll have to do some things differently to compete.”

Addison Trail hosted eight onenight shootouts on the varsity where each team played three games per night. The Blazers also headed over to District 88 neighbor Willowbrook for a shootout.

“That was our summer,” said Lyons. “We played 33 games all in all.

We were down about 15 games from the last two years.”

Lyons saw plenty of positives

heading into the 2017-2018 season.

“It’s a very coachable group,” he said. “We played to what our personnel dictated. I thought we shot well from the outside and defensively we made some positive strides and pretty much played man-to-man defense. We’re not going to rule out playing different defenses based on what will be readily apparent with our lack of size.”

Pudlo missed part of the summer due to injury. “We liked what he brought to the table when he was in there,” the coach said.

Lyons also was impressed with seniors Connor Palesch, AJ Parnell and Albert White.

“Connor shot it well all summer,” said Lyons. “He was shooting seven, eight and nine 3s a game. He is working on developing his all-around game. But he provided consistency from the arc. AJ had a rough summer. He’s a three-sport athlete with football, basketball and baseball.

His plate always was full. We took it easy on him. He showed glimpses of being a major contributor for us. Albert is the younger brother of Tyler and Taylor and his game has grown by leaps and bounds. He competes hard and he plays hard. We never worry about his effort. He grinds every time he’s out there. It was nice to see those three seniors in particular have strong summers.”

Younger players Adam Mehmeti and JT Daniels also played well.

“They both had good summers,” said Lyons.

Lyons is looking forward to the continued development of this group once the 2017-2018 season starts.

“It’s definitely going to be a mix of moving pieces early in the season,” he said. “We will find combos that will work. Our size is going to be different this year, but we will find ways to make up for it in other areas.”

Youthful Willowbrook girls basketball team has productive summer Warriors could have as many as nine juniors on roster

While the Willowbrook girls basketball team technically qualifies as young, the Warriors are far from bereft of varsity experience.

The Warriors have a trio of returning juniors-to-be in Maureen Schmid, Katelyn McCann and CeCe Lizasuain, all of whom saw time on the varsity as sophomores last year.

“They all played last year and this year they will look to be starters,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell.

Harrell said overall the Warriors made progress during the recent summer season.

“We are really young,” he said.

“We’ll have as many as nine juniors on the team. We had a lot of people finding their way. This summer we saw some good player development.

It was very encouraging.”

Harrell noted the Warriors went 10-17 during the summer, not that he’s too concerned about wins and losses in June.

“I look at it as a successful summer,” he said. “The girls played hard

and played well for the most part.

They are getting accustomed to the varsity level. They got better and they were enthusiastic during our time together. They will be ready for the season.”

Harrell also was impressed with the summer participation level. “We had really good participation in the summer,” he said. “The girls were quite excited about camp.”

Willowbrook played in the Montini summer league. “Virtually everybody in the area plays there,” Harrell pointed out.

The Warriors also headed down to Bradley University in Peoria to play in an event where they went 2-2.

“We saw some typical central Illinois schools where they are good shooters and well-disciplined,” said Harrell. “Our girls fought through the games and won. They were challenged there.”

The team also performed well at a shootout at Loyola Academy where it lost to the host school by a basket. “We played pretty well there, too,” said Harrell. “We are emerging as shooters. Our shooters are led

“Emma played at the sophomore level last year,” said Harrell. “She will be a bigger guard for us. She has some skills. She can attack the basket and has some quickness and should see a lot of time this year. Sydney would be a big guard. She’s 5-8 or 5-9. She also attacks the basket.

That’s what we are looking for. Once we spread the floor we’re looking for people who are open and can spread the floor and have that ability to attack the basket and get some scoring out of it.”

Willowbrook no longer will host a beginning-of-the-season tournament.

Instead, the Warriors will head to Marist High School for a tournament.

IC Catholic Prep football team faces same schedule in 2017 The IC Catholic Prep football team, which won the state title a year ago, won’t have to jog its memory too much when it comes to this season’s schedule.

The Knights will play the same nine opponents it did a year ago en route to the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title, a 14-0 record and the aforementioned state title.

In fact, IC Catholic Prep will play those same nine teams in the same order it did a year ago. The only change will be the venues.
