When the Rev. Mike Klamecki settled in his theater seat to watch the action movie “Logan” on March 25, he didn’t know he was about to star in his own story of suspense.

About midway through the film, Klamecki’s wife Carol noticed her husband was unresponsive. She called 911 and Elmhurst Fire Department paramedics arrived at the theater in less than five minutes.

Promptly noting that Klamecki wasn’t breathing and had no pulse, they started resuscitation. But their patient coded again, twice in the ambulance and again in the Elmhurst Hospital ER. Klamecki is the pastor of New Hope Community Church in Villa Park and is a father of three.

“The incident itself had more impact on my wife and daughters than it did on me,” he said. “I was unaware of what was going on for the next two or three days.”

Samuel Hayward, MD, an Elmhurst Hospital emergency physician, cared for Klamecki in the ER. “The initial tests showed that Mr.

Business community to Congress: move quickly on tax reform U.S. Chamber, others urge leadership to focus on tax reform According to a release received form the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the nation’s top business organizations are urging Congress to reach common agreement on a tax reform plan and move quickly on legislation. In a letter sent on Wednesday, June 28 to Congressional leadership, the group said that no other reforms under consideration in Congress are as important as pro-growth comprehensive tax reform.

Klamecki had arrhythmia and may be having a heart attack,” says Dr. Hayward. “It appears he had gone into spontaneous ventricular fibrillation (SVF).”

After Klamecki was treated in the ER, he was taken for an angiogram, which showed that the trim and active 47-year-old had no blockage in his arteries, so bypass surgery to create a new pathway for blood flow wouldn’t be necessary. He did however have a weak heart that was causing his arrhythmia, doctors said.

What was needed was a cooling procedure to lower his body temperature to prevent brain damage, which can occur during cardiac arrest because the brain may not get enough blood.

“Cooling is often done in cardiac arrest cases to preserve brain function by reducing brain activity,” said Dr. Hayward.

The doctors treating Klamecki agreed he was a good candidate for use of the hospital’s state-of-the-art cooling technology – the ZOLL Intravascular Temperature Management (IVTM) System.

More efficient than the routine application of multiple cooling pads, the IVTM allows patients to reach a target body temperature quickly and accurately. After the IVTM therapy,

which typically lasts 24 hours, the system re-warms the patient back to a normal body temperature at a controlled, safe pace.

Klamecki’s care team in the Elm-

hurst Hospital Intensive Care Unit included critical care specialist Ahmad Raslan, MD, of Elmhurst Clinic, and nurses Ruth Mack, RN; Jeanie Brown, RN and Renato Bautista, RN. Apoor Gami, MD, who specializes in cardiac electrophysiology with Advocate Medical Group, inserted a defibrillator to treat a lethal arrhythmia.

“I feel pretty good now,” said Klamecki. “My cardiologist, Dr. Michael Brottman (of Advocate Medical Group), said he considers me to be among the 5 percent of people who have this happen and don’t either die or have their brains impacted. I always knew that life is fragile, but having something happen so suddenly makes it real and apparent.”

Klamecki may have missed seeing the whole “Logan” action flick, but his brother tried to make up for it. He sent a souvenir to remind Klamecki of his experience – a Mr. Freeze action figure from the Batman comic book series.

Bensenville Warriors defeat Villa Park Wildcats in girls softball On Saturday June 25, the 14U Bensenville Warriors defeated the Villa Park Wildcats at Redmond Park in Bensenville to win the 2017 Five Star Softball Championship. The Warriors, managed by Nancy Panos, completed their perfect season with a 4-3 win that featured outstanding pitching and defense from both teams.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Aggravated Battery to a Child (Class 3 Felony) charges have been filed against two Warrenville brothers for allegedly supplying cannabis to their five-year-old nephew. The brothers, age 14 and 17, appeared in Juvenile Court for a detention hearing this morning where Judge Joseph Bugos ordered the younger brother to home detention while the elder brother will remain in custody. In addition to the Aggravated Battery charge, the elder brother has also been charged with one count of Resisting a Police Officer, a Class A Misdemeanor.

It is alleged that on June 28, 2017, the brothers and their nephew were locked in a bathroom at the victim’s home that he shares with the two brothers. It is alleged that the two brothers supplied a lit cannabis joint to their nephew. It is further alleged that the victim’s mother smelled the odor of cannabis and when she opened the bathroom door, her son was coughing and crying. The victim’s mother reported the incident to the Warrenville Police Department whose investigation into the matter resulted in today’s charges.

The elder brother’s next court date is scheduled for July 6, 2017, while the younger brother’s next court date is scheduled for July 13, 2017.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

In “Containment and Credibility,” Proctor explores how the half-truths and outright lies of both the Johnson and Nixon Administrations brought the United States into a conflict costing more than 50,000 American lives over eight years. As the nation considers how

best to confront the growing threat of ISIS, the author believes it is increasingly important to understand how we were convinced to go to war in the past.

Dr. Proctor, a veteran of both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars with 24 years of service, writes regularly on current affairs, military history and military simulation topics.

He earned his doctorate in History from Kansas State University and holds a master’s degree in Military Arts for Strategy from the U.S.

Army Command and General Staff College. He also holds a master’s degree in Military Arts for Theater Operations from the highly selective School of Advanced Military Studies. Proctor’s bachelor’s degree is from Purdue University, in Mechanical Engineering.

On the morning of Monday, July 3, the Independent learned that there had been an airplane crash in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 1, which claimed the lives of two employees of Bensenville School District 2. A teacher and maintenance director died when the small plane they were flying went down in northern Wisconsin.

The aircraft had taken off from the Waukegan airport and was bound for Winnipeg, Manitoba, when the accident occurred.

According to reports, the plane was a twin-engine Cessna 421C that lost altitude and crashed about 3:20 a.m. on Saturday. Officials at the Price County Sheriff’s Office in Catawba, Wisc., said parts and debris from the incident could be found at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 8 and State Hwy. 111.

The Village of Villa Park and Tri-Town YMCA are joining forces on Monday, July 10, and sponsoring a Lunchtime Workplace Walking Event.

Instead of working through lunch, local employees will be encouraged to work out instead for 15 to 20 minutes.

“Walking can help you lose weight, fight stress, and raise your energy level,” said Rich Keehner, Villa Park Village Manager. “Many of us eat lunch at our desks, but studies have shown that workplace walking will improve your health and your productivity.”

The walk will start at Villa Park’s Village Hall at 12 noon and end at the Depot at Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park, where healthy refreshments will be served. Nearby businesses and their employees are asked to get their walking shoes ready and join the event.

The goal is that workplace walking groups will be formed and continue to develop healthy habits.

The U.S. Surgeon General has issued a call to action to promote walking and recognize the importance of physical activity for all ages, and to create walkable communities that are safe and easy to navigate. Physical activity is one of the most important steps that people can take to improve their health and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

Tri-Town YMCA received a grant from the Illinois State Alliance of YMCAs to promote walkability in Illinois.

Local officials will also participation in the July 10 event.

“At the YMCA, our mission is to promote healthy living, along with social responsibility and youth development,” Joanne Mitrenga, Executive Director of Tri-Town Y said.

Villa Park resident to volunteer at BMW Championship for 11th year As the 2017 BMW Championship makes its way back to Lake Forest this year, area residents are stepping up in a big way to ensure its success. Western suburb resident Kelly Smith—who resides in Villa Park—will be volunteering with the tournament for her 11th year.

Kelly first got involved with the BMW Championship back in 1997 (when it was called the Western Open) along with her mom, who is also still a volunteer. Over the years, Kelly has grown from volunteering in hospitality to being a captain to co-chairing various committees, like access control which she heads up today. She’s even volunteered for major events like the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

The penultimate event of the PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoffs will be played at Conway Farms Sept. 12-17. Kelly is among 1,000 volunteers on board to work the tournament, and there are still opportunities available. (See below.)

Kelly’s bond with her mother over their shared appreciation for the game of golf is why she volunteers for the BMW Championship every time it comes to the Chicago

area. But it is her love for helping others that continues to bring her back. She makes a living assisting others as superintendent of recreation for Clarendon Hills Park District, so it’s only natural for her to continue lending a hand as a volunteer at the BMW. Volunteer opportunities remain for PGA Tour’s return to Chicago Golf fans interested in volunteering at the 2017 BMW Championship are encouraged to sign up soon, as more than 1,000 volunteer positions already have been filled for the event, set for Sept. 12-17 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Select volunteer opportunities are still available to assist in staging the BMW Championship – the penultimate event of the PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoffs – when it returns to Chicago’s North Shore, the Western Golf Association announced today. Volunteers perform key tasks inside and outside the ropes during tournament week, including welcoming thousands of patrons each day, assisting corporate hospitality guests and selling apparel in the event’s merchandise tent.

The BMW Championship is the penultimate event in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs, with the top 70 PGA TOUR players competing for an $8.75 million purse, including $1.53 million for the winner. Former champions include Jason Day, Zach Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Tiger Woods.

All proceeds from the BMW Championship benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation, which awards full tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving caddies from modest means. Since 2007, the event has raised more than $24 million for Evans Scholarships.

“The BMW Championship could not happen without the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers,” said Vince Pellegrino, WGA Senior Vice President of Tournaments.

“Volunteers are essential to our success and our charitable mission to support the Evans Scholars Foundation, which awards college scholarships to caddies from modest means.”

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and commit to work at least three shifts during tournament week. Shifts range from 4-6 hours in length, depending on assignment.

Teams will use buckets to try and sink the other canoe with water from the pool until the opponent’s canoe is submerged. Teams will move around the pool using their hands, buckets and shields to paddle.

Staff will be in the pool to assist.

All canoes, buckets and shields are provided. Register as a team of four or as an individual to be placed on a team. Life Size Battleship begins at 1 p.m. and is for ages 5 and older.

Run at your own risk: Addison Trail baseball standout Simon Marinelli has developed into an elite catcher

Addison Trail senior-to-be baseball player Simon Marinelli got the catching bug from his older sister, Crystal, a former member of the Addison Trail softball team.

“She was a catcher for a little bit and I saw her doing it,” Marinelli said. “I liked the idea of trying to throw out runners so I tried to become a catcher.”

At first, Marinelli wasn’t very successful with his plan. “In the house leagues they were never able to put me at catcher,” he said. “I always was playing shortstop or second base.”

That changed in sixth grade when he joined the Addison Blazers travel team. “I was able to catch on that team and since then I have loved my time behind the plate. I love how you always are involved in the action. You are part of every pitch. I also like the responsibility and leadership qualities about the position.”

This past high-school season and this summer, Addison Trail baseball coach Mike Kennedy has lauded Marinelli for his leadership qualities.

“I think I’m a pretty good leader,” said Marinelli. “Coach Kennedy told me when I was a sophomore that I have to step up and then my junior year I was one of the leaders on the varsity team. I tried to step up with the other senior players. They took charge and we helped keep everybody serious and focused and that helped us have a good season.”

Several years ago, Marinelli was nominated by an Addison Trail teacher to take part in a leadership conference that featured student-athletes

from all the West Suburban Conference schools.

“Being a leader comes pretty easy for me,” he said. “I like to take charge with different activities.”

Marinelli estimated he threw out around 16 of 45 runners who tried to steal on him this spring, a very solid number.

“I tried my best,” he said, trying to downplay the statistic.

Marinelli recently opened some eyes at a junior high-school showcase event held at the Schaumburg Boomers minor league stadium. He turned in some of the top statistics in the 60-yard dash and the vertical jump. Marinelli also went 2-for-2 in the simulated game with a triple that ended up being the equivalent of an inside-thepark home run after an overthrow. He also had an infield hit.

Marinelli isn’t sure if baseball will be a part of his future beyond high school. “I’m deciding whether or not to play in college,” he said. “It’s going to be based on my major. I’m not sure yet.

School and athletics are each very time consuming. I would love to play at the next level but to put in the energy for both studies and playing baseball at the same time is not quite that easy.”

Marinelli, who plays travel baseball for the Elmhurst Cougars organization, is no slouch in the class room either. He has an excellent 4.67 cumulative grade-point average. He posted the first two Bs of his high-school career this year in AP U.S. history and honors pre-calculus. “School is very important to me,” he said.

When he’s not on the baseball field, Marinelli said he enjoys playing other sports with his

friends.

“I spend a lot of time playing sports,” said Marinelli. “They always have been a big part of my life.”

And looking ahead, Marinelli sees more good things occurring for the Addison Trail baseball program.

Willowbrook summer baseball team defeats Montini Kamp stars on mound in recent win

The Willowbrook baseball team has carried its winning ways of the spring straight into the summer.

After a recent sweep of Montini in summer league action, the Warriors had 12 wins through late last week. The Warriors also recently played against Glenbard West.

“We had some other kids step up this week,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner late last week.

One in particular was Mason Kamp, who had a strong pitching outing in one of the games against Montini. He went 5 innings and allowed two hits and one earned run.

New IC Catholic Prep athletic director Nissen excited for opportunity Wants to continue Knights’ recent string of successes for student-athletes

All the right signs were being given to new IC Catholic Prep athletic director Adam Nissen while researching his new position.

“I saw the job posting and having come from (Chicago) Mt. Carmel, I knew a couple of guys from Mt. Carmel who are affiliated with IC Catholic Prep and spoke very highly of the school,” he said. “I heard nothing but great things from people about the teachers, the administration and the community. It was a very attractive job.”

Nissen takes over for former AD Tom Schergen who started as the school’s new president last week.

“The other major thing is it’s a small-school setting,” he said.

“I was born and raised in Iowa (University of Iowa graduate) where there is that small-school setting. I’ve seen what IC Catholic Prep has done athletically and with the academic part of it. The job was very attractive to me.”

Nissen spent the past three years at Mt. Carmel where he taught a bevy of social-science courses and coached football.

He was the head sophomore coach the last two seasons, as well as a varsity defensive assistant. He also coached in the track and field program there.

Prior to Mt. Carmel Nissen taught at Urban Prep in Chicago, an all-male charter academy in the Englewood neighborhood.

If not this coming year, in the next few years the future of Addison Trail baseball is bright. I think there are going to be some good baseball teams that will compete with other teams in the conference and in the playoffs.”

Nissen praised the help he’s received from Schergen. “It’s been pretty incredible,” he said. “He’s given me a great perspective. I’m able to see everything the outgoing AD is doing.

Tom did an awesome job, especially with the facilities. He was pulling out pictures of what the field (Plunkett Athletic Complex) used to look like. IC Catholic Prep has great facilities and it’s done very well in sports such as football, volleyball and basketball. Tom has been a savior. All the questions I have for him and working on all the processes, he’s been there with anything I’ve needed. I’ve jumped in feet first and he’s thrown a lot at me. He’s been extremely helpful. He’s the best.”

Nissen noted he has some goals in mind coming out of the gates as the school’s new AD. “With me coming in as the new guy, I’d like to see us continue the team and individual successes we’ve had,” he said. “A big thing is holding the student-athletes and coaches accountable for upholding the IC tradition and making sure they conduct themselves to the highest standards like they have been doing. I expect big things. There is a lot to look forward to at this school.

Athletics at the school are trending upward. I’m stepping in and want to continue the process and go from great to even greater.”

Another player who has helped the Warriors this summer is incoming junior Danny Holloway.

“Danny is a junior who has done a great job at second, third and short for us,” said the coach.

“He’s having a great summer. With some of our pitchers playing middle infield spots such as Jack Hines and Ryan Mintz, we need a guy who is flexible and can move around the infield and Danny certainly has done that. He’s been that flexible guy. He’s started a couple of doubles plays. He’s been great.”

Wisner has been pleased with the team’s progress at the plate in June. “A big positive is we are starting to really hit the ball,” he said.

“A guy like Jeremy Conforti is a junior who is batting third or fourth and has really stepped up and hit the ball hard.”

Wisner also likes the mix of returning players and potential newcomers to the varsity.

“We have a good idea about the guys who are coming back and what we have with them,” he said. “It’s a matter of who is going to step up and take up those spots that guys such as Mike Dembowski (graduated senior) and MJ Ranieri (graduated senior) as examples.”

As has been custom in recent years, Wisner is confident about the quality of pitching he has on the roster.

“Our pitching has been good,” he said. “We will be good on the mound. We have guys coming back such as Vince Ruchala in the bullpen who logged 19 or 20 innings of relief work in the spring. Jack Nilles, Ryan Mintz and Jack Hines also are back. We’re also excited about a guy like Jack Klobucar who is a lefty. Pitching-wise I’m very encouraged. (Pitching) coach Curtis Hudson has developed a deep pitching staff. We’re deep with arms again. It’s going to be no different than the past few years.”

Another positive for Willowbrook this summer has been watching a new group take shape, Wisner noted.

“We start out trying to find who we are and then we work hard to find whoere we are,” he said. “Each team has its own ID. This team is starting to find its own ID. Everybody out there wants to contribute to being a good team.”

Willowbrook is off this week for the Fourth of July holiday and returns to action next week with the start of the state summer playoffs.

Elmhurst American Legion baseball team sweeps pair of games Beecroft rips home run in win against Wheaton

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team had another strong week, this time recording wins against Kenosha and Wheaton.

After an early week cancellation against Streator (Streator had to make up a game in its conference instead) and a 10-0 conference forfeit win against Frankfort (Frankfort only had 7 players), Post 187 got back to work at Plunkett Athletic Complex with a 7-1 victory over Kenosha.

Brendan Connell (York) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a stolen base. Tim Beecroft (Fenton) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Elmwood Park’s Ray Abarca went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double, while York’s Mike Bernal was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

IC Catholic Prep’s CJ Slowinski was the winning pitcher. He threw a seven-inning complete game and allowed only five hits and no earned runs, while fanning two and walking none. He needed only 84 pitches to pick up the victory.

“CJ did very well,” said Post 187 coach Mike Biondo. “He came in and challenged hitters and kept them at bay. He did very good on the mound.”

Elmhurst then headed to Carol Stream to face longtime district foe Wheaton in a game played behind the Legion hall. Elmhurst jumped out to a 6-0 lead at one point.

Wheaton cut the lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning. Beecroft hit an over-the-fence home run in the fifth to put the Muddogs up 7-2. Elmhurst tacked on another run and Wheaton countered with two in the sixth to cut it 8-4 and then scored three in the bottom of

the seventh to make it close with Post 187 still prevailing by an 8-7 count.

“We were able to pull it out,” said Biondo, whose team had nine players available for the Wheaton game.

Fenton’s Alejandro Orosco went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base. Beecroft went 2-for-4 with the solo home run, two runs scored and a stolen base. York’s Tamaine Durr went 1-for-2 with a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base.

Orosco was the winning pitcher. He moved his record to 1-1 after going 5 2/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out four and walking none.

York’s Nick Lee pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up the save.

The wins put Elmhurst at 10-4 overall.

“We hit the ball very well (last week),” said Biondo. “Our pitching is still there.

We just need to take care of the baseball. Everything is falling into place lately. The hitting and pitching have been good. If we take care of the baseball we should be fine.

We should have won that Wheaton game 8-0 if we had taken care of the baseball. The last week of the regular season is coming off and then it’s the playoffs. I think we will be ready.”

Post 187 returned to action after the Fourth of July with a game against Mt. Prospect Post 525. Elmhurst is scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Plunkett against Round Lake Post 1977 before facing Frankfort in a doubleheader Sunday starting at 1 p.m. at Main Park in Frankfort.

(formerly known as §§39s-l through 39s-12, ch. 48, lllinois Revised Statutes, 1973); and WHEREAS, the aforesaid Act requires that the Bensenville Public Library District of the County of DuPage, State of Illinois, investigate and ascertain the prevailing rate of wages as defined in said Act for laborers, mechanics and other workmen in the

locality of said Bensenville Public Library District employed in performing construction of public works, for said Bensenville Public Library District.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE BENSENVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT: Section 1. To the extent and as required by “An Act regulating wages of laborers, mechanics and other workmen employed in any public works by the state, county, city or any public body or any political subdivision or by anyone under contract for public work”, approved June 26, 1941, as amended, the general prevailing rate of wages in this locality for laborers, mechanics and other workmen engaged in the construction of public works coming under the jurisdiction of the Bensenville Public Library District is hereby ascertained to be the same as the prevailing rate of wages for construction work in DuPage and Cook Counties as determined by the Department of Labor of the State of Illinois as of May 2014, a copy of that determination being attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference. As required by said Act, any and all revisions of the prevailing rate of wages by the Department of Labor and of the State of Illinois shall supersede the Department’s June determination and apply to any and all public works construction undertaken by the Bensenville Public Library District. The definition of any terms appearing in this Ordinance which are also used in the aforesaid Act shall be the same as in said Act. Section 2. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to apply said general prevailing rate of wages as herein ascertained to any work or employment except public works construction of this Bensenville Library District to the extent required by the aforesaid Act. Section 3. The Secretary of the Bensenville Public Library District Board of Trustees shall publicly post or keep available for inspection by any interested party in the main office of this Library District this determination or any revisions of such prevailing rate of wage. A copy of this determination or of the current revised determination of prevailing rate of wages then in effect shall be attached to all contract specifications.

Section 4. The Secretary of the Bensenville Public Library District Board of Trustees shall mail a copy of this determination to any employer, and to any association of employers and to any person or association of employees who have filed their names and addresses requesting copies of any determination stating the particular rates and the particular class of workmen whose

wages will be affected by such rates.

Section 5. The Secretary of the Bensenville Public Library District Board of Trustees shall promptly file a certified copy of this Ordinance with both the Secretary of State Index Division and the Department of Labor of the State of Illinois.

Section 6. The Secretary of the Bensenville Public Library District Board of Trustees shall cause to be published in a newspaper of general circulation within the area a notice of this Ordinance and such publication shall constitute notice that the determination is effective and that this is the determination of this public body.

Section 7. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage.

our barbecue grills and sparklers on the Fourth of July. We may not be perfect; we may disagree about politics and other issues, but I feel lucky to live in a place where we are free to disagree. I salute our flag, sing America the Beautiful loud and proud (albeit off-key) and at the end of the day go to bed thankful that I know the reality of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Some days are better than others.

As far as I am concerned the Fourth of July is one of the best. Enjoy.

Instead he wrote: “Paradise is to be found only in our own immense and limitless minds, shaped by our own unique experience and willingness to continually grow and change. Life is paradise for those who love many things with a passion: people, food, flowers, music, dance, books, art, memories, poetry, family, learning an endless list. There is no need to seek paradise in some far-off future.

The more passionately we love many things, the closer we come to living our paradise NOW.” Agreed.

He opens this book with the phrase “Love one another” and states that people who adhere to this way of life are often considered naïve or fake.

Do you?

Even though this book was written 30 years ago, he states “We have reached a critical point in our history.

There are growing numbers of fatalists who believe we have reached a point of no return. One thing is painfully obvious. Conventional methods to bring peace and understanding to our world have failed.”

Agreed.

“Still,” he writes, “we continue to ignore love as a possible alternative.”

Agreed. Leo claims people will see this as naïve and unrealistic.

They still do. And have we made any progress? He writes “we need to challenge the sophisticates who view it as romantic nonsense, idealistic bosh, unscientific and anti-intellectual. We need to accept love in our life as the most universal force for unification and good, accessible to

all who really want it.”

I’m with Leo. We always have a choice. We can listen to the fear and hate mongers.

We can listen to the wisdom inside.

What feels better?

Perhaps I am naïve. So be it. I love and trust, and my life is pretty nice. I am in love with many things, books, music, natural beauty, rolling hills and winding roads, a grove of pines, pizza, popcorn, my Prince, and on and on. The more I focus on the things I love, the more life becomes Paradise.

It’s the best holiday of the year – my favorite. And not just because you get to eat ice cream at lunch and roasted marshmallows after dark – although that clearly has something to do with it. Christmas and birthday fans might think the Fourth of July is an unusual choice for a preferred holiday, but I have my reasons; six of them, in fact.

Reason number six – freedom to eat. Whether it’s turkey with stuffing, cake with candles, black-eyed peas, a pumpkin filled with miniature candy bars or chocolate bunnies with their ears bitten off, holidays are all about the edibles. Independence Day is chock full of eating opportunities of the best kind – corn on the cob, watermelon, baked beans, hamburgers and hot dogs – simple fare that’s easy to make and tastes good going down. Best of all, most of it can be prepared and eaten outdoors. Who doesn’t love a picnic?

Which leads me to reason number five – freedom to enjoy the weather.

Most other holidays – New Year’s Day, Ground Hog’s Day, Super Bowl Sunday and even my birthday – fall during the colder-weather months. If I want to spend the day outside in the sun next to a lake that isn’t frozen – well, then the Fourth of July is clearly my best option.

Reason number four – freedom to enjoy the people. If you’re going to spend a day outdoors eating too much good food, you might as well do it with people you enjoy.

Independence Day allows you this independence. Other holidays come with expectations of enduring Uncle Frank’s infamous pull-my-finger prank and eating Aunt Frieda’s special green bean casserole – again.

Lots of families spend the Fourth together – because they want to.

That’s how a holiday should be.

Fun. Reason number three – freedom to have fun. You watch a parade by day and a fireworks-filled sky by night. In between there might be sack races, the Star Spangled Banner and sparklers. From sunup to well past sundown, there’s something for everyone. You can stay up until midnight – or not. Even Uncle Frank’s pranks take on a new sense of levity.

The fabulous, unfrittered fun of the day brings us to reason number two – freedom from expectations.

No one looks for wrapped packages or a basket filled with egg-shaped candy on Independence Day. It is void of expectations regarding gift giving, ghostly ghouls or flying reindeer. This isn’t a holiday about gimmes. It’s bigger than that.
