Man sentenced to 15 years for robbery of Villa Park 7-Eleven

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced last week that a Blue Island man charged with robbing a 7-Eleven convenience store at gunpoint of Illinois Lottery scratch-off tickets and approximately $200 in cash has been sentenced to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Cameron Love, 20, of 12225 Vincennes Road, appeared in Court where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Robbery, a Class 1 Felony.

On July 28, 2017, Love appeared in bond court where bond was set at $1 million with 10% to apply in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant. He has been held in custody since that time.

The sentence was handed down by Judge John Kinsella.

On May 20, 2017, at approximately 5:09 a.m., Love and an unnamed accomplice entered the 7-Eleven convenience store located on Villa Avenue. Once inside the store, Love and his accomplice stole Illinois scratch-off lottery tickets and approximately $200 from the store. An investigation into the matter led by the Villa Park Police Department led to Love. On July 21, 2017, a $1 million arrest warrant was issued for Love. Love was ultimately identified through a fingerprint that police officers discovered on a lottery ticket that Love dropped as he fled the store.

“I would like to commend the Villa Park Police Department for their outstanding work in apprehending Mr. Love once they identified him as a suspect in this case,” Berlin said. “It is because of their efforts that Mr. Love now finds himself facing a significant prison sentence. This sentence sends the message that this type of violent behavior will not be tolerated in DuPage County and that if you are convicted of this type of crime you will be removed from society for a very long time.”

Love will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

About Ty Stone and the James Brown Experience Chicago native Ty Stone was introduced to the music of James Brown on his 13th birthday when his father bought him a ticket to the show. Stone and his friends began imitating James Brown, gathering on a street corner or in someone’s basement, working on their impressions.

Ty’s uncle owned a ballroom in Chicago, and young Ty was influenced by all the top R&B acts that performed there, including B.B. King, Bobby “Blue” Bland, the Temptations and the Four Tops. He began playing guitar at age 8, and as a teenager began picking up gigs in the Chicago area.

Ty found steady work as a musician on the “Chitlin’ Circuit,” touring with national acts as they played for primarily black audiences in the South and the Rust Belt. He played with the Chi-Lites, the Staples Singers, Johnnie Taylor and Gene Chandler. He appeared on the same bills with Gladys Knight, Ike Turner and Dionne Warwick and three times, Stone was on the same bill with his idol James Brown.

When Ty was in his early 30’s he started using and by his mid-30s he was living out on the street. Ty doesn’t dwell on his past but he doesn’t hide from it or the life’s lessons he would like to pass on to others.

Ty credits God with turning his life around; God and “a made-up mind.”

erless to end the crisis his administration created, President Trump has now admitted that he has the ability to reverse the horrific policy of family separation, but the President’s executive order will not end the trauma facing thousands of families.

Instead, it will allow for the indefinite detention of families and young children in tent cities and detention centers costing the American taxpayer millions, if not billions, of dollars.

Indefinite detention for months or

years in 100-degree heat under deplorable conditions will only continue the trauma that has already afflicted these children and their families.

Additionally, there is no evidence that this Administration is prepared to handle the huge increase in family detention or that immigration authorities have the capacity to hold the thousands of people who have already had their lives ripped away. Finally, the order does not explain how children already in detention will be

U.S. House passes amendment to keep non-opioid pain treatments On Friday, the U.S. House passed H.R. 6, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, a bipartisan package of opioid prevention, recovery, and treatment bills aimed at combatting the opioid crisis. Included in the bill was language originally introduced as H.R. 5804, the Post-Surgical Injections as an Opioid Alternative Act, which was written

by Reps. John Shimkus (R-IL) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL). This bill would urge the use of post-surgical injections to help patients manage pain in a clinical setting, decreasing the demand for highly-addictive opioid pharmaceuticals.

“I am proud and hopeful to see our bill pass the House today,” said Raja. “For some time now, our country has been faced with an incredibly difficult opioid crisis which seems to only be getting worse. By offering alternatives to opioid medications, patients will now have more choice when it comes to options after surgery and how they want to manage their pain. The road to solving the opioid crisis is a long one, but with measures like this, we can work toward a more affordable and effective solution.”

July 4th crackdown on drunk drivers, seat belt violators continues through July 8

The Villa Park Police Department announced its plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on drunk and unbuckled drivers.

The crackdown will continue now through July 8.

“We encourage local residents to celebrate Independence Day safely,” said Sergeant James Cihak. “If you’re going to drink, don’t drive.

Too many people die behind the wheel each year because of those who choose to drive impaired by alcohol or other drugs. Our officers will be out in full force, showing zero tolerance for impaired drivers.”

College corner Local students graduate from Elmhurst College At its 147th Commencement on Saturday, May 26, 812 seniors were awarded Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Liberal Studies degrees. County’s Narcan Program saves 500 lives since inception

Jorgensen: 37 deaths due to opioid overdoses so far in 2018

The DuPage Narcan® Program (DNP) recently experienced a milestone by recording the 500th life saved since Narcan was first administered in 2014. The life was saved by Officer Lundy on June 23, 2018 in Wheaton.

“Serving and protecting citizens continues to evolve,” said Wheaton Police Chief Bill Murphy. “Narcan has become an important public safety tool.”

The DNP was formed in 2013 in response to the alarming number of DuPage County deaths attributed to heroin overdoses, and Narcan train-

ing began later that year. There are now 4,601 individuals trained by the DNP to use Narcan to reverse an overdose.

“Although saving 500 lives is a remarkable accomplishment, we must embrace these opportunities to link individuals to treatment,” said Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala.

Many lives have been saved, however, many lives continue to be lost.

“The remarkable successes we achieved in a few short years are overshadowed by the number of

opioid-related deaths,” said DuPage County Coroner Dr. Richard Jorgensen.

There have been 37 deaths due to opioid overdoses in 2018, the coroner said.

In DuPage County, the recently formed Heroin Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce, an interagency-interdisciplinary advisory group, is comprehensively assessing opioid use within the County. The Taskforce advises DuPage County elected leaders on ways to address opioid use in the County.

Other open house features include historical talks about the forest preserve and the ongoing restoration of Mayslake Hall, tours of the mansion, an art exhibit of Mayslake-inspired works, and art activities, including one where visitors’ completed images will be posted on Mayslake’s Facebook page.

Throughout the year Mayslake Hall hosts theater and musical productions, art classes, tours, exhibits, workshops, summer camps, special events and private functions.

Addison Trail girls basketball team makes summer strides Veteran coach Schader likes where program is headed

Addison Trail girls basketball coach Rob Schader sees a bright future ahead for his program.

Schader has seen a lot of positives during the team’s summer season, which wraps up this weekend and

early next week with a trip to a Hope College team camp in Michigan.

“We’ve been missing kids here and there with vacations, but it’s been very positive,” said Schader.

“We will have one and possibly two freshmen with us this season on the varsity, plus a sophomore as well.

The freshmen class is very talented and the sophomore class is as well.

We also have six or seven kids coming back who played a ton of minutes last year. There will be an opportunity for these younger kids to

Willowbrook summer baseball team on a roll heading into state playoffs

The Willowbrook summer baseball team finds itself in a good position heading into the state summer playoffs.

The Warriors concluded summer regular-season play with a 10-3 record.

Willowbrook is taking this week off ahead of the start of the postseason on Monday. Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner said he doesn’t know where the Warriors will be seeded, noting that the number of wins in the summer is used as a seeding criteria.

“Our 10-3 record includes the whole group,” said Wisner. “When we’ve had our first group out there, we’ve lost only once to Glenbard West 8-6.”

Wisner said the games-played total has been limited this summer because of a shortening of the summer week for the program (less games scheduled to allow for players to compete with their travel programs, Wisner pointed out) and the weather.

“We had two rain outs last week,” Wisner said late last week. “It is what it is.”

Through the summer thus far, Wisner has plenty to be happy about.

“We are throwing it well,” he said. “Our pitching has been good. Joey Guthrie has had a phenomenal summer. Josh Roucka in relief has had a great summer. Ethan Pieniazek, also in relief, has done well. Since we haven’t played a ton of games, every starter has gone two innings and then the next guy goes two innings. We have pitched well. We have everybody back from the spring and they are pitching well. We’re also starting to throw Trevor Jaloszynski more. He will help us.”

Willowbrook’s defense also has been up to snuff. “Our defense has been turning double plays with Jack Hines and Ryan Mintz up the middle,” Wisner pointed out.

The Warriors have been bolstered as well by the play of catcher Marshall McDonnell.

“Marshall is catching every game now,” said Wisner. “He’s thrown out five of six runners stealing so far and he’s hit the ball well. It’s kind of neat to see him step into that role. It’s his and he’s doing a great job with it.”

And offensively, Wisner has no qualms either. “Jack Hines is hammering the baseball,” he said. “Both Tumiltys, Scotty and Sam, are putting the ball in play and once they are on the bases, it’s hard to hold them down. They have done a really good job.”

Overall, Wisner likes the progress the team has made in such a short time span. “I’m extremely happy,” he said. “Even down to how the kids are communicating. With travel baseball being so popular, the senior’s communication has been great with that. I got a schedule from every kid before the season started. That shows they are maturing. It’s awesome. We are building on our run from the spring (Willowbrook advanced to a Class 4A sectional final). They want to get better. They have taken total ownership from reps to making sure the gear, balls and bats gets to the game. Seeing them take that ownership and seeing them maturing as players and young men is nice to see.”

Addison Trail has hosted three one-day shootouts that yielded the team a total of nine games. The Blazers also played 11 games at Palatine.

“We’ll have a chance to play 12 games at Hope College so all together it’s a chance to play 32 games this summer,” said Schader. “It’s an opportunity here to play as many games as possible in a short period and still have the summer left, which is nice. It’s important to give them

time off too and let them be kids.”

What has Schader liked this summer? Plenty is the simple answer.

“We have a lot of athleticism, especially with the younger kids,” he said. “This group also works hard at everything.”

The two freshmen Schader speaks of are “Q” Westerkamp and Mary Velez. “’Q’ is a lot like Jazmin Little was when she was a freshman,’ he said.

Schader also has seen a change with the veteran returning players.

“For the older kids, the game is moving a lot slower now after they have played a full season of varsity basketball,” he explained.

Also having strong summers are Karime Martinez, Brenda Berumen, Angelina Carreras, Serena Gilliam, Klaudia Kulikowski and Joanna Garay. “That’s six kids right there who played a ton of minutes last season

and they all are coming back,” said Schader.

Schader said the team is relishing the opportunity to go up to Hope College to cap off the summer. “It gives us a chance to hang out and have a fun time,” he said. “They love going to it.”

And looking into the crystal ball, Schader sees a ton of potential for the entire program. “There definitely is potential here,” he said. “The incoming freshman class is solid. It’s a good group of kids. We also have a 6-1 freshman who is not with us this summer because of knee surgery.

We have two guards who are freshmen who will play with the sophomore team this year. We’ve never had it before like this where we are moving players up a class. It’s going to be interesting to watch how everything pans out the next couple years.”

Elmhurst American Legion U19 team splits pair of games U17 Muddogs squad sweeps doubleheader against Round Lake

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 U19 team split two recent games with Mt. Prospect Post 525 and Elgin Post 57.

After beating Mt. Prospect Post 525 by a 10-0 count via a forfeit, Elmhurst dropped a 5-4 decision to Elgin Post 57. Elmhurst and Elgin have split the season series. Both teams will be part of the upcoming district playoffs in Carol Stream.

Elmhurst jumped out to a 2-1 lead after three innings, but Elgin scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Elmhurst did counter with two runs in the fourth.

Elmhurst was limited to four hits and also made five errors in the field.

Joe Orrico was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Nick Lee was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Mason Kamp scored a run. Jack Enright was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Nathan Kriz had an RBI, as did Dan Gusel Jr. Tamaine Durr was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Durr and Orrico each had a double.

Jordan Vogel took the loss. He struck out two. Durr pitched the final three innings and gave up two hits, no earned runs and fanned three.

The loss put Elmhurst at 4-5 on the season with a single ballgame scheduled against Highland, Indiana Post 180 at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst earlier this week. Post 187

returns to action this coming Tuesday in Montgomery at the Stuart Sports Complex against Lake in the Hills Post 1231, another upcoming entrant in the district playoffs. This coming Thursday, Elmhurst heads north to face Deerfield Post 738.

In earlier action, Post 187 lost to Wheaton Post 76 by an 8-7 margin.

Wheaton scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

The two teams combined for 22 hits, but Elmhurst made five errors.

Tommy Ryan had a hit, a run scored and two walks. Brendan Russ had a hit, a run scored and a walk.

Tim Beecroft had a hit and a run scored. Kamp went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Gusel Jr. went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Ivan Lozada went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Beefcroft and Kamp each had a double, while Kamp had a triple.

Kamp also stole two bases.

Enright was the losing pitcher in relief. Russ went 5 1/3 innings and struck out 10.

In an 11-10 win over Highland, Indiana, Elmhurst won the game in the bottom of the eighth. The two teams combined for 26 hits. Elmhurst committed six errors.

In the bottom of the eighth, Russ walked. Lozada put down a sacrifice bunt that moved Russ to second base.

Kamp grounded out to the shortstop and Russ advanced to third and then scored the winning run after an error by the third baseman.

Post 187 U17 Muddogs The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 U17 Muddogs team recently swept a doubleheader from Round Lake Post 1170.

In a 6-2 win over Round Lake in five innings, Elmhurst scored at least one run in every inning. The Muddogs had seven hits. Alexis Cotto had a hit and two runs scored. Ryan went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Alanzo Howard went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Tyler Gelsomino went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Liam Dacre had two RBI. Jack Ryan and Tommy Ryan each had a double.

Cotto stole two bases.

Dave Sykora was the winning pitcher. He struck out six in five innings and allowed only three hits.

In the nightcap, Elmhurst was a 5-2 winner against Round Lake. The Muddogs scored single runs in five of the seven innings and pounded out 11 hits.

Nybo files bill to target and report senior financial abuse With growing concerns around identity and credit fraud scams and senior citizens, State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) filed new legislation to more effectively target and report suspected financial exploitation of vulnerable adults.

The initiative mandates that financial advisors must come forward if they have a reasonable belief that a client who is a senior citizen or vulnerable adult has fallen victim to financial exploitation—and are obligated to report it to the state securities regulator.

“This legislation bridges a partnership between financial advisors and government authorities to protect Illinois’ investors who may be more susceptible to fraud, and offers the advisors immunity for filing the re-

port,” said Nybo. “It creates a safer space for seniors and other adults to invest their money, so they can trust that they will be notified and action will be taken if their advisor believes that fraud has occurred or been attempted.”

The uptick in senior financial exploitation is a cause for national concern, as the True Link Financial Report on Elder Financial Abuse 2015 cited that the senior citizen population in the United States loses $36.48 billion each year to financial abuse.

In addition to reporting potential financial abuse, the legislation requires that financial advisors provide records that are relevant to the suspected or attempted financial exploitation to government authorities.

“We focus on financial advisors

as part of the solution to combat financial exploitation with seniors, because most often they have closer, and more trusting, relationships with their clients,” said Nybo. “Additionally, they have the necessary records and authority to expedite these issues

quickly as they occur.”

Financial advisors may only notify third parties of their concerns if they have consent from the client; however, they may not notify a third party if that party is suspected to be responsible for the financial ex-

ploitation. Furthermore, the advisors have the ability to temporarily delay monetary disbursement if fraud is suspected.

Nybo filed the legislation on June 28, and it now moves to Illinois Senate Assignments Committee.

Fenton graduate Celarek wraps up volleyball career at Gardner-Webb Lopez, Larsen, Geraci complete freshmen collegiate seasons

Fenton alum Nicole Celarek wrapped up her collegiate volleyball career this past school year at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

Celarek, an outside hitter, finished her senior season with 250 kills in 102 sets (2.45 kills per set). She also registered 203 digs and 31 total blocks.

She finished with 569 kills over her three seasons at Gardner-Webb.

Celarek played her freshman year at Central Connecticut where she had 163 kills that season.

Lopez at Northern Illinois University Fenton graduate Noel Lopez completed his freshman season on the Northern Illinois University men’s soccer team that went 3-11-1 overall.

Lopez played in three games, including a 23-minute stint against Valparaiso and a season-high 29-minute outing against Western Michigan.

The midfielder attended Fenton, but played four seasons with the Chicago Sockers in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy where he helped

Larsen at Aurora University Bryan Larsen, a former three-sport athlete at Fenton, recently completed his freshman season on the Aurora University baseball team.

Larsen, an accounting major, appeared in 28 games this past spring for the Spartans where he had 11 hits, 13 runs scored and drove in eight runs.

Larsen was part of an Aurora team that qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament after winning the NACC tournament title.

Geraci at Elmhurst College Fenton alum Jenna Geraci got right into the thick of things during her recently completed freshman season on the Elmhurst College softball team.

Geraci, Fenton’s MVP and an all-conference selection her senior season, pitched 18 1/3 innings and recorded one save with five strikeouts.

She also hit .286 with four hits in 14 at-bats. She had one double.

Geraci was Fenton’s team MVP her senior season where she also earned all-conference honors. Geraci also lettered in volleyball and basketball at the school.

Cotto was 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Sykora had a hit and an RBI, as did Howard. Andrew Pietrucha had two hits. Justin Lomax also had two hits. Sykora’s hit was a double.

Cotto stole five bases in the contest.

Gelsomino was the winning pitcher. He threw a seven-inning complete game, allowing only four hits and two earned runs, while recording five strikeouts.

Post 187 also recently headed to Tennessee for a tournament. Elmhurst dropped a 12-1 game to Huntsville, Alabama Post 237 in five innings.

Elmhurst was limited to five hits.

Gelsomino and Jose Alvarez each had two hits. Alvarez also had an

RBI. Michael Hilgart had the other hit. Hilgart took the loss.

The Muddogs also lost 8-0 to Columbia Post 19 in five innings. Alvarez and Kriz each had a hit. Cotto took the loss.

In an 11-2 loss to Long Horns in Tennessee, Kriz had two hits. Cotto and Alvarez each had a hit. Alvarez’s hit was a double. Alvarez took the loss. He struck out four in four innings.

Celarek was Fenton’s most-valuable player in 2012 and was an all-conference selection for the Bison in 2013. She played club volleyball at Sports Performance in Aurora.

Her bio on the Gardner-Webb University website noted she plans to pursue a career in pediatric physical therapy, intensive care or emergency medicine.
