Villa Park native brings ‘Fry the Coop’ location to Elmhurst

Restaurants brings Nashville Hot Chicken to Chicago suburbs

Fry the Coop, a restaurant originally located in Oak Lawn, will be the opening of its second location in Elmhurst this summer. The destination for Nashville Hot Chicken in Chicago’s suburbs, the fast-casual eatery brings the heat with its simple cooked-to-order menu. Whether you want it “crazy” hot (call 911) or “country” (no heat), Fry the Coop satisfies your hot chicken fix and transports guests to the south with every crunchy bite.

Often compared to the famous Hattie B’s in Nashville, Fry the Coop has mastered the flavors, heat and texture of the southern favorite.

“I fell in love with Nashville Hot Chicken while living in California,” said owner Joe Fontana. “As a native of Villa Park, I wanted to concentrate on Chicago’s suburbs and create a replica of the local delicacy here. We can’t wait to officially open our second location.”

Opening this summer, the new Elmhurst location will be at 623 West North Avenue on the corner of Route 83, which is the meeting point of four suburbs: Villa Park, Bensenville, Addison and Elmhurst. In fact, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has long reported that it is the busiest intersection in Illinois.

Open in November 2017, Founder Joe Fontana is true to the southern original featuring fried chicken sandwiches, tenders and chicken and waffles. Located in Oak Lawn and coming soon to Elmhurst, Fry the Coop slogan is that it “delivers happiness with every crunchy bite.”

Archery open house showcases popular sport Visitors invited to explore sport at Blackwell on Aug. 4

Explore the classic sport of archery at a free “Archery Open House” on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville.

Participants will learn about this popular sport and its history and equipment before trying out their skills under the guidance of a certified instructor. The open house will highlight the archery range’s three different sections: beginner, advanced and interac-

tive. Visitors will also be able to talk to representatives from local archery groups at the event.

All ages are welcome at the open house, but adults must accompany those under 18. Equipment is provided, and registration is not required. For more information, call Visitor Services at 630-933-7248.

The Blackwell archery range, which is located off the Butterfield Road entrance, is open from one hour after

sunrise until sunset, except on Wednesdays, when it opens at 10 a.m. after routine maintenance. Visitors using the area do not need permits, but the range is for archery use only. Archers may use arrows with target heads but not broad heads. Outside of the open house, archers need to bring their own equipment.

The archery range is ADA accessible and features bow racks, quivers and targets with distances up to 90 meters.

Yesfest returns to Elmhurst area Three days of music, comedy, art, poetry, storytelling coming July 27-29

Six years ago, a group of self-described “stir-crazy” performers wished they had a festival in Elmhurst where they could perform all the things they loved: original music, comedy, improv, and poetry.

“Yesfest is all about creating more spaces for people to do what they love to do,” said Clark Pavlik, co-founder of the festival.

“Whether it’s music, comedy, art, poetry, or storytelling, artists want to ultimately share their art with others,” he says. “Live performances connect an artist with their audience in the best way possible.”

Yesfest had humble beginnings: first in a park, the next year in a garage. Now in its sixth year, Yesfest has grown into a three-day festival featuring more than 75 acts on five different stages at three venues. Scheduled performers come from Elmhurst, Chicago, surrounding suburbs, and Milwaukee. The event is co-presented with the Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst Brew-

Sixth Annual Elmhurst Cycling Classic opens Friday

It’s time for the Sixth Annual Elmhurst Cycling Classic, which will take place Saturday, July 27 throughout the Elmhurst College and Wilder Park neighborhoods.

This year’s premier sponsors are Superior Ambulance along with the law firm of Storino, Ramello & Durkin, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. and Edward Elmhurst Healthcare.

It’s a sight to behold, watching professional racers zip around a course that lies in the Collegeview section of Elmhurst and if you’ve never attended, it’s an exciting place to be at any time throughout the race, which continues into the evening.

Community race Much as the best part of the race may be to simply be a spectator but families won’t want to miss the Family Fun Bike Ride, which allows residents and neighbors to bring out your own bikes and ride this professional course on your own.

Presented by the Elmhurst Park District, families with all ages are invited to take a fun bike ride around the professional course of the Elmhurst Cycling Classic bike race.

You can choose to decorate yourself or decorate your bike. There will be prizes passed out on-the-spot for best-themed riders at the finish line, and all riders will be cheered on by the crowds as they ride the 1.2 mile course around Elmhurst College.

The race starts at 6:20 p.m., right before the professional women’s race and professional men’s race. Day-of registration is $5 per rider.

All riders must have a signed waiver and helmet in order to ride. All pre-registered riders will be entered into a raffle to win!

Check-in and day-of registration will take place at the Wilder Mansion north parking lot between 3 and 6 p.m.

Staging for the family fun ride is in the cul-de-sac in front of the EPD Rec Building. Be ready to roll at 6:10!

Free bike valet available The Elmhurst Bicycle Club will be hosting a free Bike Valet inside the fenced tennis courts in Wilder Park. Spectators are urged to leave the car at home and ride your bike(s) to the race.

Department of Labor offers grants for women seeking apprenticeships The U.S. Department of Labor announced the availability of funding to help recruit, train, and retain more women in quality pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs, and pursue careers in manufacturing, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and healthcare, among other industries. The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) grant helps to expand pathways for women to enter in, and lead in, all industries.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2016, the year for the most recent data available, women accounted for more than half of all workers within several industry sectors, including education and health services (75 percent), financial activities (52 percent), and leisure and hospitality (51 percent). The Persuader Rule impinged on attorney-client privilege by requiring confidential information to be part of disclosures and was strongly condemned by many stakeholders, including the American Bar Association. A federal court has ruled that the Persuader Rule was incompatible with the law and client confidentiality.

Addison July 18 Timothy Biars, 40, of Addison, was charged with battery in the 900 block of Craig Place at around 5:43 a.m. Police said Biars was involved in a fight.

July 17 Police said Christopher Callegas, 23, of Addison, was involved in an accident near Rohlwing and Lake at around 8:04 a.m., found to have a failure to appear warrant and did not have a valid driver’s license.

Police said Richard Filippo, 46, of Homer Glen, was arrested on

an original Addison warrant for DUI, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident at around 1:30 p.m.

July 15 Tiyane P. Sanyanga, 27, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer in the 600 block of Meadows Blvd. at around 2:21 a.m. Police said Sanyanga raised his right arm and swung his arm down onto a police officer’s arm.

July 14 Maria A. Delgado, 25, of Addison, was charged with endangering the life or health of a child in the 1200 block of N. Fischer at around 11:20 p.m. Police said Delgado left her child home alone for several hours.

Villa Park July 14 Criminal damage was reported in the 300 block of N. Yale at around 4:39 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect threw a rock and broke a window on a home in the area.

July 11 Gary L. Burns, 59, of Oak Brook, was charged with retail theft in the 900 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:59 p.m.

Moises A. Guzman, 20, of Villa Park, was charged with unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor July 13 and retail theft at a store at around Gaudencio Rico-Baron, 42, of 9:17 p.m.

Elmhurst resident slated to complete her term

State Rep. and Deputy Minority Leader Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale), who had already announced her plans not to seek re-election in the fall, issued a release last week stating that she is resigning her post early to serve as director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. Governor Bruce Rauner appointed her to the position, which became effective July 11.

After Bellock’s announcement, Republican leaders worked together to choose a person to serve out the remainder of Bellock’s term and on Monday, July 16, it was announced that the person to be appointed would be Elmhurst resident Deanne Mazzochi.

Mazzochi’s most recent accomplishments can be summed up in that she served as Board President at College of DuPage and had the tough job of removing the President of the College from his position and all the additional challenges that came along with the decision. (See separate story in this issue.) She was to be sworn in on Tuesday, July 24 at 5 p.m. on the lawn of Elmhurst College in front of Hammerschmidt Chapel.

Mazzochi, a Republican, has been running for election to Bellock’s seat along with Democrat James “Jim” Caffrey, who is also an Elmhurst resident.

The families of armed service members killed in action or on duty will have greater power to terminate their fallen loved ones’ lease obligations thanks to a law according to State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park).

House Bill 4317, which allows dependents of fallen service members to terminate a lease, was signed into law on Friday, July 20.

“Gold Star families have sacrificed more than most of us can

imagine,” Cullerton said. “Nothing can ease their suffering but it is our duty to give them the necessary protections to take the difficult steps forward after saying goodbye to their loved ones.”

Previous law allowed service members to terminate a lease if they receive changes to deployment orders, but there was no law in place to allow dependents of fallen service members to terminate leases.

“This is a common-sense law that will make a difficult task a little easier,” Cullerton added. “This should have been law already.”

The measure was modeled after North Carolina law, which allows an immediate family member or lawful representative of a service member killed in duty to terminate the service member’s lease.

House Bill 4317 advanced with bipartisan support and goes into effect immediately.

Rock Island area site of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 battles and 350 men came up the Illinois River to Peoria, then to the Sauk village of Saukenuk—the modern day site of Rock Island—on the Rock River.

One report said 700 Sauk warriors withdrew without resistance and watched as the Americans burned their village. According to reports by Hauberg, the Sauk, who had been America’s friend, had been mistaken for the enemy. While history is uncertain on this point, this may have been the western-most battle of the Revolutionary War. In July 1814, during the war with Britain, an expedition led by Lt. John Campbell was heading north in five keel boats to reinforce and resupply the U.S. fort at Prairie du Chien, Wis., and stopped at Rock Island. They spent two days eating and drinking with the warrior Black Hawk and his men and the Americans became friendly with the Indians.

In his autobiography, translated by Antione LeClaire and edited by J.B. Patterson, Black Hawk said they had no intention of hurting the Americans.

But during the night, the British arrived down the Rock River with six kegs of powder and told them that the British had taken the fort at Prairie du Chien and wished for the Sauk to join them in the war, which they agreed to do.

The next morning, July 19, 1814, Black Hawk and 500 braves were hidden along the river as the American expedition entered the head of the Mississippi River’s dangerous Rock Island Rapids. While passing what is now called Campbell’s Island, the wind came up and blew Lt. Campbell’s boat to shore.

“This boat the Great Spirit gave us,” according to Black Hawk’s account in his autobiography. “We advanced to the river’s bank and commenced firing at the boat. ... I encouraged my braves to continue firing. … I prepared my bow and arrows to throw fire to the sail, which was lying on the boat; and after two or three attempts, succeeded in setting the sail on fire.” The boat was soon in flames.

The Quad-Cities region has provided a footnote to history for virtually every war fought on American soil, including the Battle of Campbell’s Island – the western-most battle of the War of 1812.

According to the records of Indian historian John Hauberg, as the French and Indian War ended, the last of the French soldiers of the northwest spent the winter of 1760-61 near present-day Rock Island, ice bound, on their retreat from Michilimacinac to Fort Chartress, Illinois, following the British conquest

of Canada.

All Indian villages in the upper Mississippi and Great Lakes were canvassed by British agents to enlist Indians for fighting in the frontier during the Revolutionary War. The Americans, even before General George Rogers Clark conquered the Illinois country in July 1778, had agents who had succeeded in keeping the Sauk and Meskwaki from joining the British ranks. With the arrival of Gen. Clark, messengers were sent to all of the tribes inviting them to come to Kahokia to join in treaties of peace.

According to the writings of Hauberg, the Sauk held to the middle ground—trading with the British but also with the Spanish at St. Louis and with the Americans in Illinois.

In 1780 the British hatched a plan to retake the entire Mississippi Valley. Representatives of all tribes were forced to serve. The first attack was at St. Louis, but according to some accounts the Sauk and Meskwaki held back. Other Indians, fearing a rear attack from them, held back too and the grand scheme of conquest failed.

in close to the boat on fire and took off all the people except those killed and badly wounded,” Black Hawk related.

“They did not return fire. ... I therefore ordered a rush to the boat. When we got near, they fired and killed two of our people, being all that we lost in the engagement.

“Some of their men jumped out and pushed off the boat and thus got away without losing a man. I had a good opinion of this war chief (Lt. Campbell) – he managed so much better than the others. It would give me pleasure to shake him by the hand.”

In September, U.S. Army Maj. Zachary Taylor was sent with a fleet of eight protected keel boats and 334 men to destroy Black Hawk’s village

and uproot the crops.

According to accounts written by historian Hauberg, as the fleet approached the mouth of the Rock River at the Mississippi, the wind shifted and reached gale proportions. They put in at Pelican Island and were attacked by Indians and British six-pound cannon and swivel guns. The expedition fled back to St. Louis.

All of these western military activities led to the construction of Fort Armstrong in 1816. It was abandoned in 1836 after Indian warfare died down and from 1840-45 was an ordnance depot. In 1861 efforts began in earnest to build a national arsenal on the island.

It was approved by President Abraham Lincoln in July 1862.

Rauner signs two Cullerton bills aimed at saving veterans Senator claims mismanagement, failed leadership has killed 13 “Gov. Bruce Rauner’s mismanagement and failed leadership killed 13 veterans, now he is trying to take credit for measures the General Assembly had to pass to address his mismanagement. Gov. Rauner does not deserve a pat on the back for attempting to govern in the eleventh hour.”

That was a quote from Illinois State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park). After months of waiting, Gov. Bruce Rauner finally signed two new state laws sponsored by Cullerton to protect veterans at state homes from deadly Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks.

“Gov. Bruce Rauner’s mismanagement and failed leadership killed 13 veterans, now he is trying to take credit for measures the General Assembly had to pass to address his mismanagement,” Cullerton added. “Gov. Rauner does not deserve a pat on the back for attempting to govern in the eleventh hour.”

The first measure, House Bill 5683, will expand the list of facilities operated and maintained by the veterans home to include the Sycamore facility in Quincy, allowing for temporary housing of veterans.

“This measure places the health of our veterans ahead of bureaucracy,” Cullerton said.

“The high summer temperatures put our heroes in harm’s way.

Moving residents to the Sycamore home will serve as a safer alternative while the state makes progress in eliminating any sign of Legionnaires’ disease at the Quincy home.”

Due to high temperatures expected during the upcoming summer months, the veterans will be at a greater risk than ever, and Cullerton said he is furious that it took so long for the governor to sign this safeguard measure into law.

“The governor continues to sit on his hands while both sides of the legislature work together to remedy the Legionnaires’ crisis,” Cullerton said. “The Quincy veterans’ facility is a home for

servicemen and women and their loved ones, not a photo op for the governor.”

The second Cullerton measure Gov. Rauner signed, Senate Bill 3128, will save veteran lives by speeding up construction at the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy.

The measure will immediately authorize the Capital Development Board and the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs to address the ongoing public health crisis that has already claimed 13 lives at the Quincy Veterans Home.

“Our veterans have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe,” Cullerton said. “It’s our job to ensure they are able to live their golden years in a safe environment with the best possible care. They laid their lives on the line to protect our democratic values. They should not live in harm’s way because of the governor’s incompetence.”

The law takes the following actions among others: • Gives the IDVA or CDB the authority to use the designbuild procurement method to rehabilitate and redevelop the Quincy Veterans’ Home; • Prohibits CDB from charging a fee so that all of the funds are solely used for the rehabilitation and restoration of the home; • Requires the Office of the Governor, CDB and the IDVA to provide the General Assembly with un-redacted copies of all communications with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs related to securing funding for the rehabilitation of the veterans home; • Allows CDB to use federal funds directly for capital projects related to Quincy Veterans’ Home, rather than requiring these funds be used for debt service.

Cullerton, a veteran himself, has made it his mission to help his service brothers and sisters.

“Gov. Bruce Rauner has dragged his feet long enough,” he said. “I implore him to work quickly to rid the Quincy Veterans Home of all risks so that we don’t lose another veteran’s life.”

Cullerton: Rauner has endangered Illinois voters Gov. Rauner took steps last week to endanger Illinois voter’s personal information, according to State Senator Tom Cullerton.

Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 2273 which would prohibit the Illinois State Board of Elections from sharing any voter information with the controversial Crosscheck system or any other interstate voter registration program other than the mandated Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is outraged that the governor supports storing sensitive voter registration information unnecessarily on insecure servers.

“Elections empower residents to take an active role in the democratic process. Illinois’ citizens should be able to register to vote without fear that their personal information may be susceptible to hackers,” Cullerton said.

Illinois currently participates in

two multistate voter registration sharing programs: Crosscheck and ERIC. State elections officials say the ERIC system provides more reliable information and greater security for personal information than Crosscheck.

Crosscheck is managed by Kansas’ Secretary of State Kris Kobach, and according to researchers at Harvard and Stanford, the program compares data that is insufficient to produce dependable results.

Astoundingly, researchers found Crosscheck was 99 percent more likely to purge legitimate voter from the rolls as opposed to illegitimate ones. The system is also a glaring security risk, as it uses minimal IT security and its operators have demonstrated a disregard for basic cybersecurity protocol, leading to the personal information of Illinois of voters vulnerable to hacking, tampering

and manipulation.

The data is stored on a standard server in Arkansas, which the state admits is insecure.

Illinois’ election board’s 2016 election hacking was referenced in the indictment of 12 Russian hackers which resulted in the theft of the information of approximately 500,000 voters.

State Board of Elections officials testified during legislative hearings that hackers took voters’ names, addresses, birth dates and, in some cases, their driver’s license numbers and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers.

“Gov. Rauner needs to learn from the lessons of the past. It’s his duty to ensure Illinois’ residents have faith in our state’s electoral process,” Cullerton said. “Once again, Gov. Rauner is not willing to consider commonsense solutions to protect Illinois’ citizens.”

Last week, Republican leaders in the Illinois House of Representatives had to gather to select a replacement to fill the remainder of a term being vacated by Patti Belock a Hinsdale Republican who has been representing the 47th District for quite a while now and had already indicated she would not seek re-election. Then Governor Bruce Rauner asked her to head the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. She accepted, thus retired her position as State Representative.

It was then that the Independent learned that Elmhurst resident Deanne Mazzochi has been selected to complete the rest of Bellock’s term, which lasts through January. In the meantime, Mazzochi will seek election to the position in November.

“Deanne Mazzochi is a fiscally-responsible reformer dedicated to taxpayers and we’re excited to send her to Springfield early,” DuPage County GOP Chairman Brian Krajewski said in a statement.

Mazzochi had already been sworn in as a state representative, but a ceremonial swear-in was scheduled to take place on the lawn of Elmhurst College in front of Hammerschmidt Chapel on Tuesday, July 24.

“I am looking forward to hitting

the ground running,” Mazzochi said of representing the 47th District, which includes all or parts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Westmont and Willowbrook.

Mazzochi recognized the outstanding service Bellock gave her constituents and she looks forward to keeping up the high level of assistance towns throughout District 47 have been able to count on at Bellock’s office.

Mazzochi has served on the College of DuPage (COD) Board since April 2015 and as chairwoman since December 2015. As COD chairwoman, Mazzochi helped turn around the Glen Ellyn community college following numerous issues and controversies, according to Krajewski.

“Thanks in large part to her leadership, it is now back on track as one of the best educational resources for our area,” he said.

An attorney, Mazzochi ran unopposed for the 47th House District seat during the March GOP primary. Her opponent in November is Democrat

Jim Caffrey of Elmhurst, who left his post as a customer team manager for Clorox to focus on the campaign.

Mazzochi plans to remain on the COD board through the fall election.

“The (state) legislative calendar is not going to be particularly active until we get to January,” she said, “so I feel fairly confident that I can manage both for that interim period.”

She said she will resign from her COD seat if elected state representative.

While Mazzochi has been sworn in as a state representative, a ceremonial swearing in is scheduled for July 24 at Elmhurst College.

Mazzochi grew up in Villa Park and lives in Elmhurst with her husband and two children.

The DuPage County Health Department is working with local, state, and federal public health officials to investigate an increase in the number of Cyclospora illnesses in several Illinois counties. A new outbreak of cyclosporiasis linked to a private event in Skokie was identified this week Since mid-May, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has received confirmation of 266 cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic Cyclospora parasite.

Of those, 110 reported eating salads produced for McDonald’s restaurants days before becoming ill. The

As President of the Board of Health, Linda Kurzawa oversaw the following: • Expansion of the urgent care dental clinic; • Local response to the H1N1 influenza pandemic; • Initiation of the Rx Box drug take-back program; • Offering community-wide education about the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

An avid supporter of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program, Kurzawa was honored as a “Local Hero” by BMW for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 2007.

The DuPage County Board of Health has resolved, “That Linda Kurzawa has earned substantial respect, recognition, gratitude, and admiration for her commitment to the public health of DuPage County residents, and the DuPage County Health Department Community Center located at 115 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, Illinois shall now be rededicated and renamed as the Linda A. Kurzawa Community Center.”

Nicki is a personal fitness trainer with over 25 years of fitness and nutrition experience. She has served the Elmhurst, Oak Brook and surrounding communities for the past 15 years.

Watching my stepfather slowly deteriorate as he got older was the main reason I opened Dynamic Strength.

Several years ago, I noticed my stepfather starting to slow down. His daily tasks were becoming more difficult for him and I noticed he started to shuffle a little bit when he walked. I knew if I could get him to exercise he would be able to do more and feel better. Although, having not worked out a day in his life, I knew that it would be almost impossible to get him into a gym.

That’s when I knew that Slow Motion Strength Training would be an excellent type of exercise for him and it would provide others who are not accustomed to exercising the opportunity to regain their muscular strength, become fit and healthy again.

We have helped many people achieve

goals they never thought they would reach. Regardless of your age or fitness level, you can expect to shed body fat, increase muscular strength and endurance, lower cholesterol levels, improve bone density, balance and coordination.

It is such a rewarding experience to see how people progress in their training and become a younger version of themselves and that’s why I love what I do!

DuPage Foundation offers ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ grants NFPs in health, fitness invited to apply for portion of $25,000 to be awarded

The JCS Fund of the DuPage Foundation has announced a new grant opportunity to support evidence-based programs that encourage healthy eating and physical activity.

Healthy Lifestyles Grants totaling a minimum of $25,000 will be awarded to not-for-profits in DuPage County, which are working in one or both of these areas.

According to the 2018 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, DuPage County is one of the healthiest counties in Illinois. Despite

this high ranking, data still shows significant prevalence of chronic diseases such as stroke, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and arthritis. The JCS Fund is proud to support programs that are combating these health concerns.

Letters of intent (1500-word limit) must be submitted by Friday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. to the grant application portal on the Foundation’s web site at dupagefoundation.org, where letter guidelines and more information is available.

Addison Trail boys basketball team wraps up summer season Blazers hosted eight shootouts

It was business as usual during the recent summer season for the Addison Trail boys basketball team.

And that’s a good thing according to veteran coach Brendan Lyons.

“It was your average summer season,” he said. “We had good commitment from our returning varsity guys and we didn’t do too much travel at

all.”

The Blazers hosted eight shootouts and went over to district neighbor Willowbrook for a shootout.

“We played about 30 games this summer,” said Lyons. “We had some guys coming back who played well and we were able to see a lot of the new guys in there. In the summer we want our guys to stay healthy and we want to walk away with an idea of what we can do. It all came to fruition this summer. We were in a much better position at the end of the summer.”

Lyons saw plenty of things he liked

from the likes of returning players JT Daniels and Adam Mehmeti.

“JT was all-conference as a junior,” the coach pointed out. “He’s a workhorse. He did a lot of nice things in the summer. He expanded his game a little bit. He’s playing on the perimeter and in the post. He’s definitely one of our leaders. Adam is back for his third season on the varsity and he took a step forward. He developed his perimeter game. He shot the ball well at times. We saw a lot of good things from those two guys.”

AJ Carlson played up on the varsity as a sophomore for the Blazers.

“He came up with us in January of last season,” said Lyons. “AJ had a productive summer. He played point guard for us pretty much the entire summer. He’s a three-sport guy. He did some nice things for us. He’s a good 3-point shooter and he handled the point responsibilities.”

Sophomore-to-be Robert Roskiewicz will be part of the varsity this season. “We’re looking forward to having Robert up with us,” said Lyons. “He’s a post player who can do some really nice thing.”

Also contributing this summer was John Baumgartner, who was the JV

team’s leading scorer a year ago.

“It was good seeing guys get a ton of minutes in different rotations this summer,” said Lyons. “We saw different things. We got a good feel for what we have coming back for this coming year. We came out of it healthy and saw a lot of guys in action. We also were able to spend time individually with the guys, working on their games. We also were able to get a few different directions with personnel with guys who developed their games and diversified themselves. We had a good summer.”

Fenton senior-to-be Julia Kaspari has aspirations to study interior design or architecture when she hits college.

“I’ve always had a passion for interior design,” she said. “It’s something I like. I like doing drawings in my free time.”

And Kaspari already has been a practitioner of the craft. She did the architectural plans for her family’s home.

“We built a house and I did the plans for it for my parents,” she said.

“Overall, I liked how it all came together. All the spaces are really nice.”

Sports keep Kaspari plenty busy as well. She’s a two-sport athlete at Fenton, playing both volleyball and basketball.

“I kind of like both equally well,” said Kaspari, an outside hitter on the volleyball team. “With volleyball we all hang out and have a lot of fun together and I like the team aspect of basketball.”

Kaspari was in the midst of volleyball team camp through late last week. She said one of her biggest improvements has been her offense.

“My hitting has improved a lot,” she said. “I’m being more accurate and more of a powerhouse.”

On the basketball side of things, Kaspari has made strides with her 3-point shot. “I think my 3s in general have gotten better. I’ve also gotten better at being a team leader. In the beginning that was a little awkward because I’m on the shy side, but I’ve definitely got better. It’s nice to be able to be a leader and get to know all the girls better.”

Kaspari said she’s having a blast in coach Dave Mello’s basketball system. “It’s a lot different and it’s a lot of fun,” she said. “All the girls are excited. Everybody is playing and everybody is having a lot of fun with it. It’s very fast paced. Everything now goes so much faster. At first it was a big adjustment, but we are having a blast.”

Overall, Kaspari’s high level of fun extends throughout her studentathlete tenure at Fenton. “Fenton has been really great,” she said. “It’s a very welcoming school and a great place to be. Everybody has been really nice. It’s been a great experience for me.”

Jack Schiltz then singled before Nathan Kriz’s ground out advanced Schiltz to second base with two outs.

That’s when things heated up for Post 187.

Schiltz advanced to third on a wild pitch and Andrew Pietrucha walked to put runners at first and third. Michael Hilgart also walked to load the bases. Nick DeSimone continued the walk progression by drawing a free pass and driving in Schiltz to cut the lead to 9-4.

Tyler Gelsomino also walked, forcing in Pietrucha. Alexis Cotto then singled, scoring Hilgart to make it 9-6.

The game became tied when Jose Alvarez singled to right, scoring Gelsomino and Cotto. DeSimone also scored a run on an error.

Elmhurst won the game when the Wheaton pitcher balked in Alvarez.

“Everything we needed to happen right happened right,” said Post 187 manager Mike Biondo. “We kept fighting and we kept coming back. It was back and forth. We played very well at the end.”

Elmhurst had eight hits in the game. Gelsomino went 1-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Cotto was 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Alvarez was 3-for-4 with

a run scored and two RBI. Alanzo Howard was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Schiltz was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Post 187 led 3-2 after three innings, trailed 5-3 after 3 1/2 innings and led 8-5 thanks to a five-run fourth inning.

The Muddogs had nine hits in the game and overcame five error sin the field.

Post 187 then lost an 11-10 contest to Morris Post 294. Morris won the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a game that featured a combined 22 hits and five errors.

Elmhurst led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth before Morris scored six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Gelsomino went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Cotto went 2-for5 with two RBI. Alvarez had a hit and two runs scored. Howard had a hit and a run scored. Alvarez, Cotto and Howard each had one double. Cotto took the loss in relief.

“The 17U team has been playing well,” said Biondo. “They are clicking.”

The loss to Morris put Post 187 into the consolation bracket against Wheaton Post 76. If Elmhurst won that game, it would have to beat Morris twice to win the 2nd Division South title and get a shot at 2nd Division North champion Barrington sometime this week for a chance to play in the Illinois junior state American Legion tournament.

Willowbrook High School had an abundance of student-athletes earn academic and sports honors during the recently completed spring season.

In badminton, Hanna Konrath, Charlotte Dewyer, Millie Zachariah,

Hailey Vogt, Maria Luz Alcala, Grace Wachholz, Sydney Wilson, Kaitlyn Karcz, Aleksandra Daskiewicz and Taylor Scheelk earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors as singles players.

Doubles all-conference teams included Zachariah and Vogt, Luz Alcala and Karcz, Konrath and Dewyer, Wilson and Wachholz and Nicole Kapica and Kaitlyn Fox. Konrath was a state qualifier.

In boys gymnastics, Adam Sousa,

American Legion baseball program to start 15U team in 2019 Super Junior team to play in variety of university-based tournaments

American Legion Post 187 program director Mike Biondo recently announced the program will be expanding to a third team in 2019.

Post 187 will field a new Super Junior American Legion baseball tournament team in 2019.

To play for the 15U team for the summer 2019 season, players must be 15 years of age or younger before Dec. 31, 2019. Players can be no younger than 13 years of age.

The cost to play is $900. That fee includes top-level competition, playing time, team insurance, field

use, equipment, umpires, full-button cammo jersey, full-button tackle-twill jersey, two pairs of pants, a belt, a custom flex-fit hat and four university tournaments.

Post 187 plans on playing in tournaments held at Northwestern, Butler, Notre Dame and Benedictine in Lisle. The team also will conduct 18-20 days of one-hour indoor winter team workouts.

Biondo said payments can be paid in full or can be paid in monthly increments starting Jan. 3, 2019.

An initial deposit of $500 will solidify a spot on the team.

Biondo noted the team also will participate in the 17U American Legion postseason tournament series.

“It’s going to be a high competition level and the guys have the added benefit of indoor workouts in the off-season,” said Biondo.

Biondo said his goal is to continue to grow the program and spread awareness of the benefits of American Legion baseball. Post 187 added a 17U Junior Legion team this season and also has its long-standing 19U team.

“I want to get American Legion baseball in the eyes of a lot of people who don’t know about it,” he said. “I have people all the time tell me they have no idea what it is. American Legion baseball has been around for 92 years. It’s been around a long time and has such a great tradition. If you are at the 19U level, the World Series is on ESPN. If you are on a team that makes it to the state tournament, they pay for your meals and hotel. If you make it to the regional level they pay

for your airfare as well. If you get the World Series, you get all those benefits and they give out awards and scholarships. It’s amazing what American Legion baseball does, but a lot of people know nothing about it. The benefits of American Legion baseball need to be pushed out there more. The more I push it, the better off I am.”

Biondo has been pleased with the traction the Muddogs program has gained in short order. “We are going in the right direction,” he said.

“We’ve added a team here every year. We’re bringing in kids and teaching them the right way and getting them ready for next year.

That’s our objective. We want to make kids better and if a younger kid belongs at a higher level, let’s move him up to that 18-19 team and see what they can do.”

Biondo noted several teams still hold these open tryouts, including the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.

The Brewers open tryout will be held Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the camp starts at 9 a.m.

Players are evaluated based on major league standards for their position.

There is no age limit or cost to participate in the tryout camps, but American Legion baseball players must have written permission from their coach to attend.

The Elmhurst American Legion U19 baseball team wrapped up summer play with a pair of games in the American Legion 11th District tournament held at the Carol Stream American Legion Post 76 Baseball Stadium.

The Muddogs opened the tournament with a tough 1-0 loss in nine innings to Elgin Post 57. Rules were changed this season to make district and division American Legion playoff baseball games seven innings in length as opposed to nine.

Elmhurst’s Brendan Russ was the hard-luck loser. He allowed seven hits and no earned runs while striking out five and walking none. Of his 95 pitches, 68 went for strikes and he threw a first-pitch strike to 23 of the 30 batters he faced.

“Brendan pitched outstanding,” said Post 187 manager Mike Biondo.

“He brought it the whole game. It

probably was his best performance.

We didn’t bring our bats. It was their best pitcher against ours and it was going to be who would come up with the big hit and unfortunately it ended up being Elgin.”

The Muddogs were held to two hits. Joe Orrico and Vince Bilotti each had a double.

Elgin had a batter reach on an error and the subsequent batter doubled in the winning run.

Post 187 faced Elgin once again in the consolation bracket and lost 11-1 and was eliminated from the playoffs.

Elgin led 3-0 after two innings and 6-0 after three innings before blowing the game open with five runs in the fourth inning.

Post 187 was limited to three hits and made four errors. Bryan Larsen had two hits and an RBI, while Russ had a hit and a run scored. One of Larsen’s hits went for a double. Jordan Vogel took the loss. Only five of Elgin’s 11 runs were earned.

The Muddogs finished the season with a 7-7 mark.

“The first game was a very wellpitched game,” said Biondo. “The second game we weren’t in it from

the start. We were flat. I think Elgin had some momentum from walking off on us in the first game and that took the wind of our sails and it was the end of our season.”

Biondo noted next year’s senior Legion team will have a different look to it.

“We’re going to be losing 12 or 13 players who will be above that 19-year-old threshold,” he said.

“We’ll have a new group coming in next year that is part of our 17U group now that has played very well together.”

Biondo said the competition level at the senior American Legion level lived up to its billing. “We had five players who are playing in college,” he said. “I thought we would do a lot better, but that shows you with American Legion baseball that you never know. Younger guys who are 18 and are playing with 19-year-olds in college, they are there to compete as well. Just because you have college players doesn’t always mean you are going to win. It’s more about the determination of the team as a whole. We saw some good teams this summer.”
