Villa Park putting first responders first

Keeping the Fire Dept. state-of-the-art with new equipment

The Villa Park Village Board of Trustees recently approved two upgrades for the Fire Department in an ongoing effort to provide the Village’s first responders with state-ofthe-art equipment. The latest measures address the overhead doors at Station 81 (1440 S. Ardmore Ave.) and provide for a new utility truck.

The station has four overhead garage doors to allow fire trucks and other vehicles to easily access the main garage. New doors were last installed in 1976 and maintenance costs have mounted. Village staff indicated more than $27,000 has been spent to maintain the doors in the last decade.

“It benefits us and benefits the community as a whole,” said Rakosnik about upgrading equipment.

The new doors, scheduled to be installed by the winter, will be purchased from Allied Door, Inc. of Addison. There were three bids for the work. Allied Door was the lowest qualified bid at $49,588.

Elmhurst Park District pools earn prestigious 5-Star honor Has received award 5 years in a row Elmhurst Park District lifeguards are top notch according to the Starfish Aquatics Institute. Reviewers did an unannounced audit at East End Pool and Norman P. Smalley Pool during June, and staff was notified that the review for both facilities turned up a 5-star audit, a prestigious honor in the world of aquatics!

Lifeguards were first assessed using a “mystery shopper” approach to evaluate scanning, attentiveness and professionalism. More than 50 performance metrics were assessed and both Elmhurst Park District facilities met and exceeded critical standards in each one to earn the overall 5-Star rating.

The Elmhurst Park District is no stranger to 5-star audits. District pools have received the honor every year for more than five years. According to Angela Ferrentino, Director of Parks and Facilities, it comes down to setting the bar high and only hiring the best.

Annalia Fowler, pool manager and lifeguard instructor, has been with the District five years and has seen the staff continuously excel.

“Lifeguard safety for us takes a lot of time and dedication that allows staff to acquire the knowledge needed to keep the Elmhurst Park District Pools 5-star facilities,” Fowler said, “It is a highlight of my summer to watch the staff grow and learn through our practices.”

ISWS to host FEMA mapping project meetings The Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS), on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is hosting two meetings on Thursday, July 27, to present the revised preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for DuPage County. The first meeting will be for local government officials from 1:30-3:30 p.m., and the second will be a public open house from 4-8 p.m. The open house will be held in the auditorium of DuPage County’s JTK Administration Building (421 County Farm Rd., Wheaton).

The meeting for local govern-

ment officials will include presentations on the revised preliminary FIRM and FIS panels, including changes incorporated since they were originally presented in 2015.

In addition, during the open house, ISWS, FEMA and DuPage County staff will be available to help citizens locate their properties answer questions. These staff members will offer expertise in engineering, GIS, floodplain mapping, floodplain management, Letters of Map Change, FEMA administrative procedures and flood insurance.

Residents living in or near special flood hazard areas, realtors,

insurance agents, developers and representatives of lending institutions are encouraged to attend. In advance of the open house, FEMA has posted digital copies of the revised preliminary FIRM and FIS report materials at www.fema.gov/ preliminaryfloodhazarddata.

The Elmhurst History Museum is pleased to announce the promotion of the museum’s former registrar, Daniel Lund, to the position of curator of collections as of July 5, 2017. Mr. Lund takes over the responsibilities of managing and curating the museum’s collection of more than 20,000 artifacts, photographs and historically significant objects as well as contributing to exhibits and providing reference services to the public.

Lund has worked at the museum in a parttime capacity for more than three years, and has been integrally involved in collection care, inventory, and the ongoing project to digitize the Elmhurst History Museum’s collection. Daniel was also involved in growing and integrating the museum’s searchable online database of historical photographs and ephemera into the EHM’s web site to make more collection items accessible to the public and researchers. He also initiated a weekly Throwback Thursday Feature on social media that showcases photos from the museum collection that has quickly become one of the most popular posts each week.

Lund holds a Master of Arts degree in Historical Administration from Eastern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Valparaiso University. His work experience in collections at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and the Lakeshore Museum Center in Michigan combined with his research and technology skills honed in various museum, library and academic positions made him an ideal fit for his new role at the Elmhurst History Museum.

Yesfest brings music, comedy, art, poetry, film festival Five years ago, a group of self-described “stir crazy” performers wished they had a festival in Elmhurst where they could perform all the things they loved: original music, comedy, improv, and poetry.

“Nothing like that really existed in Elmhurst, so that’s how Yesfest came to be,” said Clark Pavlik, co-founder of the festival. “The mission was to provide a supportive and fulfilling event for musicians, artists, comedians, and poets in the community,” he said. “When you get people together and give them a space for them to come and present their art, awesome things happen.”

Yesfest 2017 will take place Friday, July 28 from 12-9 p.m. and Saturday, July 29 from 12-8 p.m. The event is open to the public and is free with the exception of the stage located inside the Art Museum which is free for students and $9 for adults.

Performances take place at Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave. and Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave. Yesfest had humble beginnings: first in a park, the next year in a garage. Now in its fifth year, Yesfest has grown into a two-day festival featuring more than 60 acts on three different stages. The event is co-presented with the Elmhurst Art Museum and the Elmhurst Public Library.

“The amount of talent in this town is limitless,” said Pavlik, who says that this year, submissions had to close earlier than expected because of the overwhelming response.

Report: Millennials starting to buy more homes ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

Bucking a trend dating to the Great Recession, millennials are starting to buy more homes. Good news for the nation, but what about Illinois, which young people are fleeing in droves?

Home purchases by Americans ages 18-35 have been dropping for more than a decade. However, a report by apartment-finding service ABODO found that young homebuyers nationwide have accounted for the largest increase in home purchases in the last couple months. The largest spikes are in smaller cities and towns. ABODO Senior Communications Director Sam Radbil says young people have typically been renters by choice.

“You live in a place, you pay your rent and you’re very mobile,”

he said. “The millennial renter-bychoice mindset is more of a flexibility type of mindset. It’s all about the ability to do more with your money and your time in general.”

This shift could mean a significant boost for the housing industry, but it could also mean a bigger separation in the recovery between Illinois and other states. According to IRS data, the state lost more than 80,000 residents ages 18-35 between 2011 and 2015.

And with one of the lowest percentages of millennial homeownership in the Midwest, Radbil said Illinois’ higher housing costs are likely to be what’s making would-be homeowners continue to rent. Little more than a third of the state’s millennials own a home, according to the report.

Event will include shuttle rides from Jefferson, Lufkin Something new and exciting is brewing in Villa Park. Villa Park Brewfest will be held Saturday, September 23 at Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park, 318 E. Kenilworth, 2-5:30 p.m. This inaugural event will be a craft beer tasting festival and will showcase the talents and various beers from area breweries. Attendees will enjoy sampling craft beers and hard ciders from approximately 20 locations.

Tickets are available for purchase, online only, at $59 for a Gold Pass which provides early entrance from 1-2 pm, a food ticket, use of indoor bathrooms and a commemorative tasting glass. General admission tickets are $40 (through August 18) and include entrance from 2-5:30 and a commemorative tasting glass.

General admission tickets are $45 beginning August 19. A designated driver ticket is $15. Please note that Brewfest is a 21-and-older event, even the designated driver needs to be at least 21. Several food trucks will be at Brewfest offering a variety of food items for purchase.

Shuttle service available from pools A FREE shuttle service will be offered and run from the Villa Park Metra Station, 349 N. Ardmore, to Brewfest. The shuttle will also run from two off-site lots: Jefferson Pool, 341 N. Harvard and Lufkin Pool, 1000 S. Ardmore. Times are approximate to accommodate eastbound and westbound trains. Jefferson Pool shuttle times are 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.; Lufkin Pool shuttles will run 1:45 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 4:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.. The new truck will be purchased through the Suburban Purchasing Cooperative for $29,700. The money will come from the Village’s Equipment Replacement Fund, with the Foreign Fire Insurance Board donating $1,700 to purchase the light bar and have the lettering applied to the vehicle.

Within the last year, the Fire Dept. has also received 26 self-contained breathing apparatus air packs. FEMA grants in the amount of $189,000 paid for 90% of the total cost of the equipment. A new alarm system and video monitors/TV’s were also installed in the stations.

grants, Villa Park purchased a new fire engine in 2016, replacing a 26-year-old vehicle. Additionally, the Medic #82 ambulance entered service in May 2016. The new ambulance, along with the Village’s other Medic units, are being equipped with new patient transport gurneys designed to mitigate the chance of injury to firefighter/paramedics while lifting patients.

“Back problems are the number one on-the-job injury, and this equipment helps prevent that,” said Chief Rakosnik.

Keeping the Fire Dept. facilities and equipment in top condition, including upgrading to the latest technology, is an important consideration for the public safety of Villa Park residents, according to Village and Fire Dept. staff. In 2016, the Fire Dept. responded to more than 2,800 calls for service, with 1,854 of those for Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Pension payments to eat up entire $5 billion tax increase, and more Critics say measure does nothing to address state’s debt, could prolong problems ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

The entirety of the $5 billion in tax increases the legislature imposed on Illinoisans will be eaten up by this year’s pension payment, and that’s still not enough to address the growing liability.

Lawmakers overrode Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a $36 billion budget July 6, enacting it into law. Under the newly-enacted budget, the state will spend around $7 billion for public sector pension funds.

That means the entirety of the $5 billion income tax increase will go to pay for pensions, and nearly 20 cents of every dollar taxpayers send the state will go toward public sector pensions this year.

Sheila Weinberg, the founder and CEO of the government finance watchdog group Truth In Accounting, said the planned payment is actually short of what’s needed.

“One thing that we’re concerned about in this current budget is they are actually reducing the contributions into the plan as the liabilities are increasing,” Weinberg said. “It is

similar to me saying that my budget is balanced, but I won’t be making the minimum payment on my credit card.”

Truth in Accounting Director of Research Bill Bergman said it’s another example of kicking the pension can down the road.

“It’s remarkable, but at the same time it’s consistent with past practices – taking your time to catch up,” he said, “and meanwhile, unfunded pension benefits and the growth rate is accelerating.”

Illinois’ unfunded pension liability is $130 billion and growing.

The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Matt McKillop said Illinois’ debt is one of the largest of all states.

“Unfunded pension costs, unfunded retiree health care costs and debt –…measure that against the state’s personal income, or the size of the economy,” McKillop said. “Illinois’ [debt] is third-largest in the country.”

Weinberg said paying down the growing debt will squeeze out vital services taxpayers deserve.

July 8 Krystal R. Breckinridge, 23, of Darien, was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, expired registration and no insurance near Lake and Third at around 10:30 p.m. Police said Breckinridge provided a false name to officers following a traffic stop.

July 3 • Kiara S. Moore, 26, of Fort Worth, Texas, was arrested in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 7 p.m. Police said Moore had a warrant out of the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department in Texas for being a fugitive from justice and was transported to the DuPage County Jail.

• A 28-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery and aggravated assault in the 200 block

of Hale Street at 12:04 p.m. Police said the suspect struck a victim on the face and about the body with his fist, and struck a door with a knife, penetrating the door that the victim was standing behind.

Villa Park July 8 Jacob Hamilton, 18, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, two counts of unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor, improper lane usage and no insurance near Route 83 and Salt Creek Bridge at around 2:05 a.m.

July 7 • David Judys, 19, of Elmhurst, was charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance near St. Charles and Westmore at around 5:05 p.m.

State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) said the same thing happened with the 2011 temporary income tax hike, when the increase went to pay off growing pension obligations.

She is worried lawmakers won’t actually address the root cause of the pension crisis – generous benefits – until things really start falling apart.

“I don’t think that until a pensioner is subject to possibly losing money in their paycheck because the systems literally have run out of money, or when you start to see layoffs occur because we can’t fund anything but pensions – until you see that in the state of Illinois, people will refuse to wake up and figure this out,” Ives said.

Ives said state government needs to move all new hires into a sustainable system similar to a 401(k)-style plan prevalent in the private sector.

Critics of the tax hike and budget have said it does nothing to address the state’s debt issues and could prolong the problems of digging out from the mess.

Club or Pole? Choosing the stick sport for summer

Summer brings out two vastly diverse species of sports persons wielding sticks, and I’m not referring to hockey and lacrosse. I’m talking about fishing poles and golf clubs.

While not impossible, it is a rarity to find a golfer who enjoys the rigors of fishing and vice versa. If you happen to do both, good for you. But by and large fisherpersons fish and golfers golf. That is the way the world was created.

Logistics demand it. Both sports require patience and time. Lots of time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to both fish and play golf. So one must choose. To golf or to fish: that is the question.

Unless you need no sleep. But most of us do.

Along with being time hogs, the two activities share a number of commonalities.

The first is money. Both sports can get expensive if you are going to dive in hook, line and sinker.

You’ve got to have the right equipement and dress the part. For a fisherperson this can involve a lucky shirt, lucky hat, a rod, reel,

bait, tackle box, life vest and boat.

For a golfer it often includes one glove, lots of clubs, even more balls, double that on tees, a visor, special shoes, a polo shirt, goofy looking pants or maybe knickers and a golf cart, if you are really serious about the sport.

Competitiveness and (dare we say) a propensity to perhaps exaggerate one’s abilities and success on the green or on the water are also par for the course. The way this is demonstrated differs between the two, however. With golf, the scores inexplicably inch lower while with fishing the inches of “the one that got away” grow higher.

Both involve water. Fisherfolk are on the lake. Golfers can be in the drink. With golf, the aim is

to put a tiny ball into a tiny hole.

With fishing it is to put a big fish into your big boat, or dinghy, if your boat’s not that big. Size matters to fisherman, but only when it pertains to the size of the fish. Size isn’t as important in golf. Accuracy and power of drive lead to success or maybe even a hole in one.

Both activities give you access to fresh air. They involve patience and a steady hand, and all it takes is one great shot or one great catch to make the entire day, well, great.

Golfers and fisherpeeps are known for their litany of excuses when things don’t go as hoped.

The wind shifted. The sun was in my eyes. Too many clouds. Wrong ball. Wrong bait. A bad hook. Lost my ball in the drink. Lost my lure in the lake. Sand trap. Sand bar.

Lousy swing. Lousy cast. Lousy weather.

The sports also share some of the same terms, albeit with different meanings. Golf involves the dreaded worm burner. Some fisherfolks dread the worm baiting.

In golf a hook is a bad thing. In fishing it is a sharp thing. In golf

We are home shopping again.

I don’t know exactly what I want, but there is plenty that I know that I don’t want and actually there is plenty that I know that I do want.

But I don’t have one set image of my “dream house.”

I go weak in the knees for a well-heeled Victorian. A sweet little country cottage makes my heart beat fast too. A sleek loft in the city is amazing. A property with acreage has appeal too. Thus, I am not a realtor’s dream client.

If asked what I want in a home, my reply does not state requisite square footage, amenities, or “gleaming hardwood floors.” (Check out real estate listings sometime and make it a drinking game. “Gleaming” will get you drunk.)

My reply would go something like: “Well, it must be pretty, pretty, pretty; beauty inside and out, and peaceful, and warm and welcoming.

It must feel like luxurious quality; a haven, a refuge, a sanctuary, with magical surroundings. It simply has to wow me. It has to FEEL right.”

It does not matter style or size or if it has granite counter tops, it has to feel like home. I don’t apologize

for being picky and at the same time wide open. When I divorced and was dating again, my only “requirements” were someone in my general age range, someone who had kids so he understood my mommy heart but was not in the throes of raising young children, and someone who GOT ME. I hit the jackpot with my Prince Charming. I was picky, for sure, but wide open when it comes to height, hair color, etc.

My dream man is real and floated in to my reality so my “dream home” can too. It just has to FEEL RIGHT. I will love it and it will love me. Being picky and being open is not schitzo, it’s normal, for me anyway. You might absolutely know you want a brick two-story Colonial with a 3-car garage and an acre yard and gleaming hardwood floors.

We can get exactly what we want, whether we can articulate specifics or not.

A Google search is certainly easier when you can type in that you want a 1974 cherry red Corvette Stingray (sweet!), or an 1864 Italianate (there are several in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ohio). If I search Kelly’s dream house, I get a listing for a vacation home in Stowe, VT. I love Vermont, but that house is not my dream. And I do not want the Barbie Dream House either.

So we keep on our path of exploration and discovery. For the most part, it’s a joyful quest. Will the next place be our forever house? With me, highly doubtful, but never say never. For now, I’m off to go look at another home, one with gleaming hardwood floors (you know what to do).

a birdie is a good thing. In fishing it is a flying thing that may or may not be in competition with a fisherperson for said catch of the day– especially if it is an eagle or albatross. When fishing you hope to catch a lunker. With golf you hope to avoid the bunker.

Golfing and fishing. They are as different as they are the same.

And they give us a reason to get outside and enjoy a tiny hook or a tiny white ball, depending on your preference.

And, despite the many comparisons, there’s one difference between golfing and fishing that cannot be overlooked: No matter how hard you try, you can’t eat golf balls for dinner.

What to do to stop unwanted phone calls (StatePoint) Whether you use a landline, mobile phone or both, you’ve likely received those pesky robocalls -- phone calls that use a computerized auto-dialer to deliver a prerecorded message. As a consumer, here is what to know about this common annoyance to your home or personal line.

• Robocalls are often illegal.

However, keep in mind that some robocalls are permitted, such as companies you have done business with under certain circumstances, medical appointment confirmations and school closing calls. Political and charitable calls are among others that also may be allowed, along with banks and telephone companies, provided those companies make the calls themselves. Remember, many robocalls illegally disguise, or “spoof,” their Caller ID information or violate other rules.

• Advocates are working to mitigate the problem. For example, NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association and its members of more than 800 independent, community-based telecommunications companies are working to provide information to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Robocall Strike Force to further develop and implement solutions to detect, assess and stop unwanted calls from reaching customers.

• Never respond to a robocall.

The Federal Trade Commission

(FTC) recommends that if you receive a robocall, simply hang up. They also warn consumers not to press any number to speak to a live operator or to unsubscribe from the list, as this will tell the robocaller that it’s reached a live number.

• Don’t give out personal information: If you receive an unsolicited call from any company, including one you do business with, tell them that you will not give them information until you verify the call is legitimate. Then, call the phone number you know or that you get from the company’s website to confirm.

• Ask your phone company to block the number. Your carrier may be able to block certain numbers, although robocallers frequently change and disguise their numbers.

• You can use technology to

block calls. Various companies offer products or services that help you control what calls ring on your phones. They range from mobile apps for wireless phones to devices you can plug into your home phone jacks in order to block robocalls to your wireless phone.

The FTC encourages consumers to report unwanted calls to www.donotcall.gov or 1-888-382-1222. Complaints may also be filed with the FCC online or 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322).

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team accomplishes plenty during summer Knights win Ferris State team camp title; reach semifinals of Ridgewood league

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball coach TJ Tyrrell labeled his squad’s summer as “great.”

He had plenty of reasons to do so.

The Knights reached the semifinals of the competitive Ridgewood summer league where they lost to Benet Academy.

“That was a very competitive league,” he said. “We played some big schools such as Lane Tech and St. Patrick and Lincoln Park and DePaul Prep, which is a big Class 2A school. We played there twice a week and did well.”

The Knights also partook in the Hoops Mountain shootout at Batavia where it beat Oswego and lost to Naperville North, while also beating

West Chicago.

“We beat a very good Naperville North team at Hoops Mountain,” said Tyrrell.

IC Catholic Prep also trekked up to Michigan to Ferris State University for a team camp.

“That was a new overnight camp for us,” said Tyrrell.

The Knights won the championship at Ferris State, going undefeated with only seven players.

“Our guys battled and played very well together,” said Tyrrell. “We have a couple new faces on the team.

These kids are coachable and they listen. As a coach that gives you energy when you have that type of reception.”

Tyrrell was pleased with the progress he saw from seniors Zen

Bakhtalovska, Kris Askew and Nico Gaudio.

“Zen didn’t make the team last year,” said Tyrrell. “He came back this summer and was focused and started for us in the post. He fit in extremely well. We’re excited about Zen and are high on him. Kris Askew did an outstanding job in a starting role this summer and Nico also started and is a guy who gave us a lot of minutes in the post last year. These guys get the job done and play hard and are smart and listen to what the coaches are trying to implement in our system. We also have unselfish players. There is a lot of things to be encouraged about.”

Tyrrell revealed Amari Reed, who played on the team last year, has transferred to Fenton High School in

Bensenville. He also noted that Luke Ricobene, who played last year, did not play this summer in order to focus on football where he is the starting quarterback on the defending state-championship IC Catholic Prep team. Tyrrell noted Ricobene told him he did plan on being back for basketball in the fall.

Junior Mike Carpanzano and sophomore Dom Gaudio (Nico Gaudio’s brother) also will help the Knights.

“Mike gave us an outside presence and Dom is a sophomore we brought up who will help us out,” said Tyrrell.

The coach did not forget about the contributions of returning all-conference players Kevin Cheng and Alex Meurer.

“Kevin and Alex are extremely fo-

cused,” said Tyrrell. “They have put in a lot of work. They’ve put on some muscle and have improved their game. We expect very big things out of both of them.”

Yet another contributor is senior Pat Shannon. “Pat is working really hard,” said Tyrrell. “Defensively he is a bulldog for us. We’re excited to have him in the rotation.”

Tyrrell sees a lot of positives heading into a new season. “We finished the season very strong last year,” he said.

“We won conference and won the regional. We have some players returning who have a great deal of experience. I’m energized and excited and focused. The entire coaching staff is. We’re looking forward to keeping the momentum going.”

Timothy Christian boys basketball team begins Plaisier era

The Scott Plaisier era is officially underway at Timothy Christian.

Plaisier, the Trojans’ new boys basketball coach, directed his team through its summer season in June with positive results.

“The summer went well,” he

said. “We had a lot of growth and we learned a lot. We still have a lot to learn but that’s normal when you are putting in a new system, new expectations and new philosophies.

The kids responded well the and are learning the things we want to do with them. I’m happy with the progress.”

Timothy played in the Riverside-Brookfield summer league.

“We were competitive there,” said Plaisier. “We were battling a few injuries in the summer, but I thought we did some good things in that league.”

The Trojans also played in shootouts at Stagg, Braidwood and

Willowbrook.

“We saw some good competition,” said Plaisier. “For us to play against a lot of really good teams and players is not only fun for the kids, but it helps us to see how we stack up against those good teams in the area.”

Plaisier saw a team that was com-

mitted to getting better in the summer. “Their work ethic is the thing that has been really promising,” he said. “They also have a good ability to learn. On the floor, we share the basketball, which also is very promising. We preach scoring via

From new attractions and accommodations to expanded recreational offerings and dining delights, Michigan is home to a wide variety of new ways to experience the state in 2017.

The new michigan.org website is part of an ongoing initiative by Travel Michigan to evolve the Pure Michigan campaign into activity, or interest-based marketing, in addition to its traditional marketing strategies.

Willowbrook boys basketball team finishes second in R-B summer league Warriors return majority of roster from last season

The success the Willowbrook boys basketball team enjoyed last year has continued into the summer.

The Warriors took second in the Riverside-Brookfield summer league, losing to Maine South in the championship game.

“There are something like 18 teams at R-B and there are a lot of good teams there such as St. Joe’s, Oak Park-River Forest, Bogan, Hinsdale Central and Lyons Township,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Per-

kins.

Perkins was pleased with how his team, which returns the majority of player’s from last year’s successful squad, progressed during the summer campaign.

“We had a good summer season,” he said. “We went 24-5 last year and we have our whole lineup back. It was a combination of what we established last season and the fact a lot of these kids have been on varsity now for two years and some going on three years. We have a lot of veterans and a lot of leadership and it shows in

our play. We picked up where we left off. We have a lot of chemistry and continuity returning and that helps a lot. We played close to 50 games and played a lot of different teams.

We saw a lot of different styles and challenges.”

Willowbrook also played in shootout events at Montini, Ridgewood and Stagg. Willowbrook made it to the semifinals of the Ridgewood event, which Perkins noted had around 40 teams. The Warriors also hosted their own shootout.

“We beat some good teams and

played a lot of good teams,” said Perkins. “I felt like we got better this summer. I’m very pleased.”

Perkins’ list of players who had strong summers reads like a virtual repeat of last year’s roster with Ethan Schuemer, Matas Masys, Matt Myers, Neal Paxton Jr., Sikander Zafar and Marshawn Phillips excelling, along with Terry Lewis and Scott Tumilty.

“A lot of guys played very well,” said Perkins. “A guy like Scott Tumilty played very well. We have a lot of guys coming back.”

With last year’s standout performance, Perkins said expectations naturally are higher.

“Expectations, internally as a group, we have high goals,” he said.

“We went 24-5 last year. They all want to be better than 24-5. We’re setting the mark pretty high by default. That should help us accomplish a lot. We won three tournaments last year and we shared the conference title. Our goal is to do all of that as well and try and get that regional title under our belt when it comes time for the playoffs.”

Fenton releases 2017 football schedule Bison to play six 2016 playoff teams under new coach Lynch

The Fenton football team will see the same nine foes on its schedule this fall.

Other than venue changes and different dates, Fenton will play all familiar faces in new coach Matt Lynch’s first season at the helm.

Fenton, which went 3-6 last year under former coach Mark Kos, opens the season Aug. 25 at 7:15 p.m. at home against West Suburban Conference Gold Division entrant Leyden.

The Bison then hit the road to Palos Heights in Week 2 to face Shepard on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

Fenton then plays a pair of Metro Suburban Conference crossover contests in Weeks 3 and 4 against Guerin

Prep and Walther Christian. Fenton hosts Guerin on Sept. 8 at 7:15 p.m. and then heads to Melrose Park on Sept. 16 for a Saturday matinee 1 p.m. start.

Fenton stays on the road for two more weeks as it opens the MSC Blue Division portion of its schedule with games at Glenbard South on Sept. 22 at 7:15 p.m., and in Elgin on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. against St. Edward.

That gives Fenton a string of three road games in a row (Walther, Glenbard South and St. Edward).

The Bison face Riverside-Brookfield at home Oct. 6 at 7:15 p.m., and then welcome Wheaton Academy to town on Oct. 13 at 7:15 p.m.

Outside the conference, Guerin Prep went 1-8 and Walther Christian went 0-9. Leyden was a playoff team at 7-3 and won the WSC Gold title with a 6-0 record. Shepard went 7-4 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

Fenton will face a total of six teams that made the state playoffs last season.

Elmhurst American Legion baseball team qualifies for division tournament

By Mike Miazga Correspondent The Elmhurst American Legion baseball team is headed to the next level.

Post 187 went 2-2 at the recent 11th District tournament hosted by Wheaton at the Wheaton College field behind the Carol Stream American Legion Post to qualify for the 2nd Division tournament this week at Barrington High School. That double-elimination tournament was slated to start Wednesday.

Post 187 earned one of two 11th District qualifying spots by defeating Wheaton in the consolation bracket of the three-team double-elimination tournament.

The victory put Elmhurst in the 11th final against Elgin Post 57. Elgin downed Elmhurst 11-1 in seven innings to win the 11th title. Elgin joins Elmhurst in Barrington this week.

In Elmhurst’s 5-0 win over Wheaton to clinch the division berth, IC Catholic Prep’s Brendan Russ and

York’s Austin Gelsomino combined to throw a three-hit shutout. Russ pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, while striking out six and walking three. Gelsomino pitched the final 1/3 of an inning.

Elmhurst broke a scoreless deadlock through five with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Muddogs added a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Fenton’s Tim Beecroft walked three times. Russ had a hit and drew a walk. York’s Mike Bernal walked once. Gelsomino went 3-for-5 with a run scored. York’s Nick Lee had a hit, a run scored and two walks. Ray Abarca (Elmwood Park) had two RBI, a run scored and a walk. York’s Tamaine Durr had a hit and a run scored, while York’s Brendan Connell had two hits and a run scored.

One of Gelsomino’s hits was a double. Gelsomino and Abarca each stole three bases. York batters were walked eight times and had eight hits.

ment with a 3-2 win over Wheaton Post 76. The Muddogs scored two runs in the fourth. Wheaton scored a run in the sixth and one in the eighth to tie it at 2-2, but Elmhurst came back with what would be the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Eichhorn had a hit and an RBI. Beecroft went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Reed had a hit and scored a run. Bernal also scored a run. Abarca had a hit. Elmhurst had six hits.

Reed pitched a nine-inning complete game. He gave up only five hits and two earned runs, while striking out 12 and walking only two. He threw 79 of 120 pitches for strikes.

He faced seven batters over the minimum.

“Austin pitched very well,” said

Elmhurst coach Mike Biondo. “He only gave up five hits and went all nine innings.”

Biondo also lauded Orosco’s pitching performance against Elgin in the first playoff meeting with Post 57.

“He went six innings and did well,” he said. “He ran into a little trouble after a tough balk call.”

Overall, Biondo is thrilled the team is headed to Barrington for a shot at qualifying for the Department tournament (Illinois state tournament).

“I’m glad we got that win against Wheaton which allowed us to move on to the Division,” he said. “All in all, we did well. Our bats were there and the pitching was good. We need to clean up our defense, eliminate the errors and take care of the baseball.

It’s good we are going to the next level.”

the pass instead of scoring via the dribble. I was very pleased to see that. I loved seeing the joy they got when the pass they made to a teammate resulted in a scored bucket.

Instead of playing for themselves, they are playing for each other, which is extremely encouraging.”

Plaisier said wins and losses have zero weight during the summer. “I tell them we don’t measure success on wins and losses in the summer,” he said. “We measure it by the quality of basketball we are playing out there. We’re looking at getting more consistent with how we defend and how consistently we are scoring it. We’re also measuring it by how hard we play and how well we play together.”

On the individual front, returning starter Brandon Orange had a strong summer. “Brandon played really well,” said Plaisier. “He had a really nice junior year and now he’s had a nice summer. He’s continuing to develop into a good offensive player and a good defender.”

Another returner who stood out was Ty Merrick. “Ty also had a nice summer,” the coach said. “He does a lot of intangible things that make teams good. He talks well out there and he leads well and handles the ball. He’s solid in a lot of areas.”

Michael Thomas and Justin Baez also took steps forward. “Michael Thomas gives us a good kind of combination,” said Plaisier. “He’s good at playing the point and we can put him in a position to score it for us. Justin is a junior who had a nice summer for us.”

Plaisier sees the summer progress as a good springboard into the upcoming season.

“Coach (Jack) LeGrand (Timothy’s athletic director and former coach) did such a great job preparing these guys to play basketball the right way,” said Plaisier. “Some things to these kids are second nature. We changed some things on offense and defense. They have bought into wanting to get better.

With a new coach, things take time.

The summer was a good introduction to it. Our goal is to keep improving in order to be competitive in late February and March.”

Beyond Barriers, an all-inclusive dance/movement class for children or adults with disabilities, is the brainchild of Elmhurst resident Jen Dolson.

“I’ve always wanted to incorporate my passion for dance and love of teaching special education,” she told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “I couldn’t think of a better way to do that than to start a dance program designed for people with disabilities. It has been a dream of mine to share my love of dance with everyone, regardless of their challenges. My dream has finally become a reality.”

Dolson is an accomplished dancer. She trained with Emmy-winning choreographers Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio and Travis Wall, and has performed with thee American Ballet Theatre. While at Western Michigan University, she was a dancer and choreographer for their dance team for three years.

“I was a competitive dancer in a variety of dance styles, including jazz,

tap, ballet and hip hop.”

After college, Dolson continued as a dance instructor for ten years. She also has a great passion to help people with disabilities.

“I’ve been working with people with disabilities almost my whole life,” she said. “I was a personal service worker, choreographer and dance instructor for an inclusive musical theater program and have since earned my B.S. degree in Special Education. These combined experiences have shaped how I designed Beyond Barriers.”

Beyond Barriers will offered at Beyond Center Stage, a professional performing arts academy located at 770 N. Church Road in Elmhurst, where Dolson is also an instructor.

“Beyond Center Stage’s inspirational environment offers students of all ages the opportunity to express their love of the arts,” stated Dolson.

“Becoming an instructor at Beyond Center Stage, under the direction of Kourtney Klemczak and Sara Sch-

reiner, was such a blessing. When I brought [the Beyond Barriers] idea to them, they were very supportive and excited for me to launch Beyond Barriers through Beyond Center Stage.

“Beyond Barriers is an extension of the traditional dance program offerings. There are no limitations. The class provides accommodations for students with a variety of disabilities.

There is no age limit. The classes will be divided into half hour sessions grouping students of similar ages and needs in the same class. I am ISBE certified with my LBS1 endorsement; and I am the sole instructor.”

Dolson will teach and train all of her assistants how to work with individuals who have varying cognitive and/or mobility needs, to ensure the safety of each and every student.

Dolson and her Beyond Barriers staff will work on multiple styles of dance, including jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, and hip hop.

“People can expect to come to class and leave feeling relaxed and happy,”

she said. “Beyond Barriers is meant to allow those who face challenges every day to focus their energy into something positive and fun.

“Students will work on basic movement techniques, jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary and more. Classes will be tailored to the students’ interests. The program began on July 12, and the classes will be offered every Wednesday from 12 -12:45 p.m.

There is no enrollment limit.”

Cantigny Park will commemorate the birthday of its benefactor, Colonel Robert R. McCormick, on Thursday, July 27. Art activities, a living history performance, golf games and a “pop-up” First Division Museum are planned from 12 to 5 p.m.

McCormick Day is Cantigny’s annual gift to the community―parking, activities and birthday treats (while supplies last) are complimentary!

McCormick, former editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, was born on July 30, 1880. He lived on the 500-acre country estate from 1920 until his passing in 1955. His will designated Cantigny as a public park for education and recreation.

On McCormick Day, Cantigny remembers the Colonel’s remarkable life as a gentleman farmer, First Division soldier, public servant and media industry innovator.

This year’s celebration will appeal in particular to those who appreciate art-and kids who enjoy craft projects. Amy McCormick, Robert’s first wife, was a talented artist and visitors to McCormick House can see her work. On McCormick Day, the museum will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The theme 2 is “Your Military History.” Veterans and civilians alike are asked to bring a photograph, object or story for the display.

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK A realtor brandishing the slogan “Get Out of Illinois” has seen an explosion of new business since the state legislature voted to raise income taxes.

Fifty-year-old Mikie Larsen and her husband made the decision to leave Illinois in recent weeks.

They’re in the process of fixing up the Rockford-area home they’ve lived in for 17 years so it’s ready to sell. They plan to move to North Carolina. Larsen said they both could easily get work there but were hesitant about the 5.75 percent income tax compared with Illinois’ 3.75 percent tax rate.

“The only thing that made us say ‘eh’ about North Carolina was that the income tax was a little higher, but our lawmakers just took care of that excuse,” she chuckled. “I know a lot of people complained about the weather in Illinois, but that never really bothered us. We grew up there.

We just wanted to get out of the tax burden.”

In July, lawmakers overrode Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a bill to raise the state’s individual income tax rate to 4.95 percent.

Larsen worked with Angela Kirsch, a North Carolina-based realtor with Keller Williams Realty who moved away from Illinois with her husband years ago. She says her website, getoutofillinois.com, has seen exponentially higher traffic since the tax increase.

“It was the last straw for a lot of people,” she said. “A lot of families

just can’t afford to live there anymore, just getting by with the annual property tax hike every year. Now, the income tax increase. It was just the last straw.”

She helped 42-year old Erica Blazer and her husband, who moved their three kids to the Charlotte area a couple years ago from the Plainfield home they owned for more than a decade. Blazer’s husband works as a registered nurse, and Blazer’s going back to school. Leaving her community was scary, but Blazer says they’re better off than they were in Illinois.

“You’re going to be better off spending less money to help yourself in the future than staying there, stuck, paying through the nose and not getting much back,” she said. “Our parents should have left the area we grew up in, but they stayed, and now they can’t sell their house for within $40,000 of what they bought it for in 1996.”

Kirsch said most of her Illinois expats find that they’re saving around $1,000 per month on lower taxes, mainly property and income taxes.

A 2016 poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale revealed nearly half of the 1,000 Illinoisans surveyed would leave the state if they could. Taxes were the most common reason given for wanting to leave.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 114,000 people left Illinois over the 12 months that ended in July 2016.

Realtor specializing in Illinois expats says the tax hike helped business

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK In the Indiana versus Illinois argument, the Prairie State has lost one of its saving graces: a taxpayer-friendly income tax rate.

Businesses in Illinois state Rep. Tom Bennett’s district are consistently reminded of a more business-friendly environment nearby.

He’s butted up against the state line with three counties in Indiana that all tout lower costs of business.

Now that Illinois raised its income tax to near 5 percent, the Prairie State has lost what was seen as its last major advantage in terms of tax policy.

Already conceded in Illinois is higher property taxes, corporate taxes, workers’ compensation fees, as well as scads of additional fees and licenses that Illinois is notorious for.

But Indiana’s counties levy their own income tax on top of a state income tax. Even combined, neighboring Newton County is now lower, Benton County is about even, and Warren County is less than a half a percent higher.

Bennett, R-Pontiac, says losing another battle in the business climate arena is only going to make it harder to right the ship in Springfield.

“It’s just going to add to the struggles that we’re trying to combat in

Illinois,” he said.

Those Indiana counties are a part of the district of Republican state Rep. Sharon Negele, R-Attica. Her counties would gladly take every Illinoisan that wanted to defect, since their biggest issue is a lack of people to fill the job openings. It’s still unfortunate, she said, for Illinoisans.

“It appears that the motive is to just tax their way out of it, which I think is unfortunate,” Negele said.

“There’s probably a better strategy than that.”

Newton, Benton, and Warren counties had unemployment rates at 3.5, 2.5 and 2.7 in May. On the Illinois side, Iroquois and Vermillion counties in far eastern Illinois on the Indiana border had rates of 3.8 and 6 percent, respectively. There wasn’t a single county in Illinois with a lower unemployment rate than its neighboring county just over the border.

Negele says the enactment of worker freedom laws like right-towork legislation that prevents forced unionization has been beneficial to businesses but more importantly to all the workers of Indiana.

“It’s bolstered unions. It’s helped increase their pay. It’s created a better environment for the entire state of workers in Indiana,” she said.
