New Trustee sworn in

David Cilella appointment fills final empty Board of Trustee seat FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

Dave Cilella was sworn in as a Village Trustee during the Monday, June 26 Village Board meeting. The ceremony, administered by DuPage Judge Robert Kleeman, took place after Village President Al Bulthuis formally announced his recommendation that Cilella be appointed to fill the remaining two years in the seat Bulthuis left vacant, when he was elected Village President in April. “I’d like to thank the board for their consideration,” Cilella said, “I’ll certainly do my best.” Cilella is a 30-year Villa Park resident and has decades of municipal public works experience. He is retired from public works positions in both Addison and Lombard. He campaigned on his knowledge of infrastructure and desire to attract more businesses to Villa Park. The Board voted 4-2 to confirm Cilella. Trustees Chris Aiello, Nick Cuzzone, Don Kase and Village President Al Bulthuis voted for the appointment. Trustee Bob Wagner and newly-elected trustee Cheryl Tucker cast the nay votes. Wagner indicated he holds no animosity toward Cilella, who ran for a Trustee position during the recent election and was, in fact, an opponent of Wagner, Tucker and Cuzzone. Bulthuis’ Trustee seat was not up for election and only became vacant when he was elected over two other candidates for the Village presidency. “I was never called and asked to support any appointees,” Wagner said. The second term trustee also related that Cilella had never

served on any Villa Park commissions and has no history of volunteerism. The only other resident that publicly declared for the appointment was Christine Murphy, a retired executive. The long-time resident of Villa Park also spoke during the June 26th meeting and expressed

her concern that applications were sought for the empty seat when, she felt, “there was already a plan to appoint Cilella.” Trustee Chris Aiello said he was impressed with Murphy’s application and encouraged her to run for Trustee during the next election. Aiello said what ultimately

swayed him to vote for Cilella was the fact that he (Cilella) took the step of actually running for the Trustee seat. “It was a difficult choice. Both [Murphy and Cilella] are qualified,” Aiello said. “I encourage Christine Murphy to run in the next election.”

Cilella was sworn in and immediately took his place on the dais. “I’ll certainly do my best to bring forward some of my past experiences with other municipalities that I was employed with to better the Village of Villa Park and keep it a great place to live,” he said.
