Torch Run passes through Villa Park

By Paul DelGuidice For The Villa Park Independent

VILLA PARK — The Combat Veteran’s Motorcycle Association (CVMA) hosted a fundraising pancake breakfast at the Villa Park VFW Post #2801 on May 1. The event was a success according to the organizers, as originally reported in the May 5, 2016, issue of the Independent. Nearly $2,000 was raised before the actual pancake breakfast was held. This was done by volunteers selling tickets to the breakfast ahead of time. Now the final totals are in, and the event was an even bigger success than initially thought. The pre-event ticket sales and day-of attendance brought the total raised to $3,833, according to Paul Schifferer, Commander of CVMA Chapter IL 24-2. With volunteers manning the griddle and the food donated, there were no costs to subtract from the total. In addition, many folks contributed and didn’t even eat a bite of flapjacks. “One hundred percent of all monies we are able to raise always goes to a veterans cause that we know will be put to good use,” said Commander Schifferer. The money raised at the May 1 pancake breakfast will be split and donated to two such deserving veteran’s causes: $1,916 was presented to the Lasalle Veteran’s Home over the Memorial Day weekend. Those funds will be used to purchase new television sets for the residence. The remaining $1,917 will be donated to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veteran in Wheaton.

State and local law enforcement members (including Villa Park Police Officer Eric Haimann, left) held the annual ‘Torch Run’ on Sunday, June 5. The event, now in its 30th year, raises funds for Special Olympics. Runners carried the torch down St. Charles Road about noon on Sunday.
