Summerfest is around the corner 12th annual event to feature car show, local bands

Amazing local talent, food, children’s activities, arts and crafts and tons of fun are the hallmarks of Villa Park Summerfest. This year marks the 12th year in a row ‘We’re breakin’ a dozen’ for the popular event.

Summerfest takes place Friday, June 16 from 6-11 p.m. and Satur-

day, June 17 from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

“The car show on Friday night has become a great part of Summerfest,” said ‘Wild’ Bill Reeves, who helped organize the classic auto show that takes place on June 16 in the same area.

“Villa Park has some really interesting cars. Bring a date, have a beer.

Listen to the music!”

Summerfest music will be free as always. Wristbands for children’s games and attractions are $10. The corner of Ardmore Ave. and Park Blvd. will be blocked off to traffic to accommodate Summerfest. Bands will play at the Gazebo and the bouncy house, slides, face painting and other attractions line the streets.

On Friday ‘Date Night,’ Dave Wolak and the Drastic Plastics will play at 6 p.m. In Session will take the stage at 7 p.m. The cars show goes from 6 to 11 p.m. The Beer tent will be open, but kids events are limited to Saturday.

On Saturday, June 17, Summerfest opens at 11 a.m. and will go to 10:30 p.m. Kids attractions end at 8 p.m.

Highlights of this year’s Summerfest include ‘Minors of Rock’ youth band, he Discover Dance troupe, a Karate Show at 11 am, a Magic Show at noon and the Reptile Show at 1:10 p.m.

“The sponsors and volunteers make this possible, I’m just here to make their lives difficult,” joked Reeves.

District 88 Voc-Ed hosts breakfast to thank local businesses

On May 12, District 88 hosted an Appreciation Breakfast to thank the local businesses and organizations that have supported the district’s Vocational Education Program this school year.

That program provides an opportunity for students with diverse needs to obtain meaningful job training in a community setting and transition to life after District 88.

Students receive individualized training at the sites with the assistance of vocational aides.

This year, 34 companies/organizations were recognized for serving as job sites for more than 100 District 88 students, and a slideshow of those groups can be viewed at tinyurl.com/ya4ab4m2.

Villa Park Oktoberfest, the threeday event held at Lions’s Park in mid-September for the last 37 years has been cancelled by the Village Board of Trustees. After discussion, the Board voted unanimously to shelve the event indefinitely.

“Oktoberfest has been losing attendance and revenue for (several) years,” said Village Manager Richard Keehner during the Monday, May 15 Village Board discussion of the matter.

The event, which featured carnival rides, food vendors and music from bands like ‘Escape’ along with kids entertainment such as the Reptile Guy and magic acts, was also ‘very weather dependent’ according to Village staff.

On Tuesday, June 13 at 7 p.m. the Park Art Center (PAC), 9 East Park Blvd., will host an artist’s talk with photographer Paul Elledge who will talk about his current exhibit at (PAC), entitled iPhone Once a Day, Everyday.

Elledge is a Chicago based photographer with solo exhibitions at a variety of galleries across Chicago, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Photography. The Artist Talk will focus on his creative process and the parameters he established for himself for his iPhone Once a Day, Everyday project; shot only in black and white, in a vertical orientation, edited using only his iPhone’s app, every day since January 1, 2009.

Since that date, Elledge has posted an image from his iPhone to his www.iphoneonceaday.com website, Facebook and Tumbler every day.

The PAC exhibit is a small representation selected from a photographic documentation of more than 3,000 photos. Subjects encompass industrial, architectural, urban, rural and the occasional car or truck. The result is a visual diary of his life and the exhibit and his artist talk allows us to understand the thinking behind this project.

Elledge says, “I am not a writer, thus I have chosen the camera as a tool to create a pictorial diary,” Elledge said. “I photograph every day to capture an image that mirrors an emotion, an experience, or a feeling that illustrates my state of mind for that day.”

Addison June 1 • Police said Dominique Richards, 22, of Maywood, was approached by officers in the 900 block of College Blvd. at around 9:14 p.m. whom they knew to have an active warrant out of DuPage and Will counties. According to police, Richards attempted to flee from police, was later apprehended and provided a false name. He then provided his true identity.

• Shannon Shaughnessy, 22, of Aurora, was charged with criminal trespass to property near Eighth and Byron at around 5:37 p.m. Police said Shaughnessy entered the residence of her ex-boyfriend without permission to obtain her belongings.

A license plate number was obtained on the scene, and officers responded to the vehicle owner’s residence. Police said Robles admitted to looking down to text on his cell phone when he crashed into the landscaping.

He fled the scene due to him being aware that his driving privileges were not valid, according to police.

• Retail theft was reported at Walmart at around 4:15 a.m. Police said that two unknown suspects removed items from the display shelves and left the store without paying for the items.

• Theft was reported at a store. Police said that between 1 and 4:30 p.m., an unknown suspect stole a wallet from a purse left in a shopping cart while a victim was shopping.

• Criminal trespass to property was reported in the 200 block of W. Division. Police said that between 7:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., an unknown suspect entered a garage and looked through boxes. Nothing appeared to be missing.

June 27th—August 10th Chairman Cronin to dedicate bridge during Bike to Work Week DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin will ride his bike to work on Tuesday, June 13 in support of Bike to Work Week. The Chairman will ride from the gazebo at the Illinois Prairie Path and Spring Road in Elmhurst to the JTK Administration Building in Wheaton. Riders will meet at 7 a.m.

Cronin will be joined by DuPage County Board members, County employees and members of local bicycle groups. Along the way, Cronin and riders will stop in Glen Ellyn for

a ceremony to dedicate a bridge in honor of Paul and Jean Mooring.

The Moorings were charter members of the Illinois Prairie Path nonprofit corporation and helped to build and maintain the Prairie Path. Paul Mooring also spent 21 years as president of the Prairie Path Corporation.

Dedication ceremony will take place on the Illinois Prairie Path bridge over the East Branch DuPage River, located between Interstate 355 and Hill Avenue. Ceremony will begin at approximately 8 a.m.

Willowbrook senior Hannah Hewitt has been awarded Honorable Mention to the 2016-17 Daily Herald DuPage County Academic Team.

The Academic Team recognizes high school students who excel in academics, but who also have exhibited a sincere commitment to their fellow students and the community at large. Morrone and Cabildo were nominated by Addison Trail for their academic prowess, extracurricular activities and leadership in and outside of Addison Trail. A panel of judges se- Hannah Hewitt lected the Academic Team and Honorable Mentions from 25 public and private high schools throughout DuPage County. A record-breaking 46 nominations were submitted this year.

Morrone and Cabildo were showcased in a special Academic Team edition of the Daily Herald on May 23, along with the entire team. That section features profiles of the team members, as well as the Honorable Mention students.

Parks and Recreation offers Mini Adventure Camps for kids Villa Park Parks and Recreation offers a great program for kids ages 3-5 to keep them busy this summer. Mini Adventure Camps are accepting registrations and are available as a Monday/Wednesday/ Friday or Tuesday/Thursday option. The two camps can be combined as a full week if needed. Register for all eight camp sessions and pay a 10 percent discount. These mini camps are a great way to introduce children to camp in a relaxed and carefree atmosphere. Each camp sessions includes daily swimming at Jefferson’s wading pool, crafts, music, stories and games.

Weekly themes will create a fun-filled camp atmosphere to keep kids active. Campers bring a non-perishable lunch each day. Addison Trail baseball team wins regional game Standout pitcher Villasenor cracks 100-strikeout barrier

The Addison Trail baseball team hit a milestone during its recent Class 4A regional quarterfinal victory over West Chicago.

In the 11-1 victory over West Chicago, standout pitcher Nick Villasenor struck out 10 and upped his season strikeout total over 100—a rare feat for a high-school pitcher.

Villasenor finished the season with 104 strikeouts and only 10 walks in 58 innings. He went 5-1 with a miniscule ERA of 0.83. He gave up only three hits in the West Chicago game.

Addison Trail benefited from a four-run first-inning outburst against West Chicago.

“Nick hadn’t seen four runs in a long time,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy. “It was nice to see him get that support. He went out there knowing his teammates had the game. When he hit 100 strikeouts the guys on the bench let him know about it. He didn’t know he was at 100.

They were cheering for him. It was nice to see him get that. One-hundred strikeouts is pretty awesome.”

Villasenor is headed to Black

Hawk College in downstate Illinois.

The Blazers then lost to Geneva in the regional semifinals and finished the year with a 14-16 overall mark.

In addition to Villasenor, Simon Marinelli and Trevor Fulmer earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors.

Marinelli finished the season hitting .398.

“We started a lot of underclassmen — juniors and sophomores,” noted Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy. “They came through for us. You could see their maturity level increase throughout the course of the year. I saw them mature as leaders and turn into young men. We saw them take the next step. That’s one of the cool things about coaching this age. You see guys go from 15-yearolds to 18-year-old men. Seeing that transformation and seeing the drive they have is one of the best things.

We saw them turn into great respectful young men.”

In addition to Villasenor, Kennedy noted George Neri is looking to play the sport in college. Bobby Daniels will continue his athletic career at the next level, but in football and basket-

ball at Aurora University.

“It’s nice to see all these kids go onto college in some aspect,” the coach said.

Kennedy noted he’s hopeful this season will act as a springboard to even more success next spring, despite the fact the Blazers lose some key components.

“Trevor Fulmer will be back and he looked good this year,” he said.

“Yes, we’re losing players such as Nick and we’re losing Ricky Perez who hit in the three-hole for us.

We’re losing Jack Kalbas and Bobby Daniels and George Neri. We have some holes to fill, but the current junior class that will be seniors and the sophomore class coming up won’t have a letdown. There are some good players there. We will build off the success we had this year and will keep adding to the foundation of this program. We went 14-16 this year and I think we lost three extra-inning games and another four, five or six one-run games. If you look at it like that, we’re a hit away from winning some of those games and maybe you are looking at a 20-win season. The next step is expecting to win those

Numerous Willowbrook girls soccer players were honored for their accomplishments on the field this spring.

Valentina Poggi was named to the all-sectional team. Poggi, along with Lesly Montoya and Jessica Ragucci earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors.

Willowbrook finished the season with a 7-10-1 overall mark and a 3-3 record in WSC Gold play. The Warriors season concluded with a 3-1 loss to Fenwick in Class 3A regional play.

“The team finished the season very strong,” said Willowbrook coach Julio Del Real. “We played very well the last game (against Fenwick) and I feel if a couple calls had gone our way that we could be talking about a different result. I am very proud of the way the team improved from the

beginning of the season. As young as we are, I look forward to the future that will bring a lot better results for us and our program.”

Lizzy Florey led the team in scoring with five goals, while Montoya was the team leader in assists with five.

Del Real saw his group take the next step on defense as the season progressed. “Our team improved overall in the way we played defensively,” he said. “Our passing got better as we went on. Our middle defenders Lesly (Montoya), Jessica (Ragucci), Zoe (Ericson, Willowbrook goalie) and Valentina (Poggi) did an outstanding job keeping the team together. Their hard work and effort enabled us to play as a team and to keep games close.”

Willowbrook graduated a key defensive player in Poggi. “Our defense will be losing our leader and replacing Valentina will be the key to making sure that we continue with our overall defensive success,” said Del Real.

Ericson made strides in the net as the season went on. “We are looking for Zoe to get better for next year and

this is only going to solidify our defense,” said Del Real.

The Warriors also improved on the offensive front, the coach noted.

“We became better as the year went on with creating scoring opportunities,” said Del Real. “We struggle at times with our offense and will look to improve that next year. Hopefully, the off-season work will pay off next season.”

Del Real saw his squad mesh as a unit and overcome numerous obstacles over the course of the spring. “I am very proud of the way they came together and played,” he said. “They played through injuries and some adversities that proved this group belonged together no matter what. I am very proud of the way the team played as one.”

The coach sees even more positives on the horizon. “I am very proud of what we did during my first year as a varsity coach at Willowbrook,” said Del Real. “As young as we were, we did an outstanding job at adapting to the varsity game and did better as the games went on. With our season work, we hope to be better next year.”

Kennedy noted the team will take a different approach to the summer season this year, with work being done Monday through Wednesday with practices on Monday and Wednesday and a summer-league game on Tuesday.

“We’ll play one day a week and the other two days will be camp stuff,” he said. “The thing is we don’t get to practice a lot once the season gets going. This way we can take some time to go over stuff and learn

the game a little more. It will keep us fresh playing only on Tuesday. We’ll cut back a little bit and that will help the guys recover, plus they will get a chance to work on their swings. A lot of these guys are playing five, six and seven games a weekend with their travel teams and don’t get to practice a lot. If there is something wrong with their swing, they have to fix it on the fly. This will give them a little better opportunity to work on some things during an hour-and-a-half or two-hour workout.”

After a few-year hiatus, the Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team has returned to action.

Under the direction of coach Mike Biondo, an assistant coach with the IC Catholic Prep baseball team, the Post 187 Muddogs draw players from various local high schools, including York, IC Catholic Prep and Fenton. The team practices and plays its home games at IC Catholic Prep’s Plunkett Athletic Complex.

“We’re looking good,” said Biondo. “We’re going to be solid with our pitching. We have eight guys who can pitch and we have three who are true starters.”

That pitching staff includes the likes of Austin Reed (IC Catholic Prep), Brendan Russ (IC Catholic Prep), Austin Gelsomino (York), CJ Slowinski (IC Catholic Prep) and Tim Beecroft (Fenton). Fenton alum Alejandro Orosco will provide help in relief and play shortstop.

Biondo noted the team’s offense will get a kick start from York’s Nick Lee (CF-RF), as well as IC Catholic Prep’s Griffen Eichhorn.

York’s Mike Bernal will catch with IC Catholic Prep’s John Hoffman seeing time behind the plate as well.

“We have a mix of good pitching and good hitting,” said Biondo.

“We’ll be aggressive out there and steal, hit and run and bunt and run.

Post 187 is part of the 11th District in Illinois. The district is a bit lighter with the announcement that the Richmond American Legion would not field a team this season.

That leaves the 11th District with four teams: Elmhurst, Elgin Post 57, Lake in the Hills Post 1231 and Wheaton Post 76.

Post 187’s regular season runs from early June until early July.

Wheaton hosts the 11th District tournament and the 2nd Division tournament in July.

The Muddogs will face the likes of Morton Grove, Arlington Heights, Mt. Prospect, Lake in the Hills, Elgin, Highland (Ind.), Wheaton, Wauconda, Streator, Frankfurt, Kenosha (Wis.) and Round Lake during the regular season.

“We’re excited,” he said. “We have 17 players on the team, which is good for the first year. We’re anxious to get going and get games in and see how we fare against the competition. I think we have the potential to do really well.”

The Muddogs were scheduled to open the season earlier in the week against Morton Grove on the road at Niles North High School and Arlington Heights at Rec Park.

Post 187 is scheduled to play tonight at Mt. Prospect at Prospect High School.

The team’s home opener is Monday at 7:30 p.m. under the lights at Plunkett against Arlington Heights.

Willowbrook baseball team reaches sectional final Warriors finish season with 26 wins

The Willowbrook baseball team dropped a 4-1 contest to South Elgin in the championship game of the recent Class 4A Lake Park sectional held at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.

“We’re still on Cloud 9 about the season,” said Schergen. “It was a magical season. It was a season that always will be remembered in IC Catholic Prep history. It’s the first girls’ soccer team trophy in school history and they will be the first to have a banner in the gym. We used the word breakthrough so many times this season, but that’s what we did. They came back with a trophy, set the record for most wins, and the list goes on and on with things they have accomplished as a group. They have created big shoes to fill for any group. We’re losing eight seniors and they gave us a lot of leadership.”

At the same time, Schergen said the program is in good shape going forward. “There is a lot of talent returning,” he said. “They are set up for years to come. The big question will be who is going to take on those leadership roles? That’s the question you have to ask when you lose that many leaders. I told them after the third-place game at state that it’s who you are as individuals that makes up the great group of girls as a whole.

It’s how they went about representing themselves and the school. This was the perfect group to represent IC Catholic Prep.”

Schergen also mentioned that 21 of the 26 girls on the roster played multiple sports this past school year.

“We have multi-sport athletes here,” he said. “This team is built on girls playing multiple sports. They are great athletes and great individuals who came together as a group, set their minds to something and achieved it. It shows what hard work and perseverance does when you stay on course and stay to the goal you have in mind.”

Reports of two mosquito batches testing positive for the presence of West Nile virus (WNV) have prompted the DuPage County Health Department to encourage county residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and the risk of contracting WNV. The Health Department launched its countywide WNV surveillance program recently and already found two positive reports from mosquitoes trapped in Wayne and Wheaton. These early reports of WNV activity are in line with similar early reports of WNV activity elsewhere in Illinois from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The Health Department is again using the Personal Protection Index (PPI) widget on its website, which is an easy-to-understand alert system that informs the public about the risk of contracting WNV, as well as the steps that should be taken to protect themselves and their families.

Residents may also report dead birds using a simple form on the Health Department’s website: dupagehealth.org/ dead-bird-sighting. Dead birds can often be an early sign of the presence of the virus in the environment.

The PPI widget provides residents with a real-time snapshot of WNV activity in the county, which ranges from zero to three, zero meaning there is no risk and three announcing a high level of risk with multiple confirmed human cases of WNV.
