On Thursday, June 14, at approximately 6:14 a.m., an officer with the Villa Park Police was on patrol in the 300 block of East Roosevelt Road at an extended stay residence. This officer located a vehicle parked, in which the registered owner was listed as missing-endangered, as well as wanted on two out of state full extradition warrants listing the charges of burglary and theft.

Officers confirmed the registered owner was staying at the extended stay residence, then made entry into the unit and located the subject, Justin Neil Caughey. Caughey was taken into custody without incident.

He was charged with being a fugitive from justice and was transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Elmhurst Hospital cardiologist praises new device Twenty shocks, ‘world’s smallest’ pump save heart attack patient

Heart disease plagued James Bulawa’s father, who experienced his first heart attack at age 47. So when James’ doctors recommended an angiogram when he was 37, he was anxious to learn how his risky family history and high cholesterol might be affecting him. The test showed that James had a moderate (30 percent) blockage in a coronary artery.

“They told me to eat a healthy diet and I should be okay,” he recalled.

Bulawa says he wishes he had seen the doctor more regularly after that incident because over the next six years, his coronary artery disease worsened.

“At 42, I started to feel pain in my arm and my gut didn’t feel quite right,” he said.

His condition led to placement of a stent to prop open an artery, which had become 99 percent blocked.

Following the 2005 procedure, Bulawa did well. He stayed fit and continued his active life of regular workouts and frequent travel for his job as a regional sales manager. But that changed in the middle of a workout on March 12, 2018, when the now 54-year-old experienced the same symptoms he had during his 2005 heart attack.

Dr. Pisano called upon Pratik Parikh, MD, an independent cardiac interventionalist and a member of Elmhurst Hospital’s medical staff, after noting a suspicious pattern in Bulawa’s EKG. Dr. Parikh says the arrest was caused by

ventricular fibrillation, the most serious kind of heart rhythm disturbance, in which the lower part of the heart quivers and can’t pump blood effectively.

The doctors said what caused the heart at-

tack that struck Bulawa at the gym was a clot blocking the artery that was stented in 2005.

The problem needed to be fixed promptly, but Bulawa’s weakened heart would need help to effectively move blood to critical organs during the procedure.

Dr. Parikh used Impella, the world’s smallest heart pump at 5 mm in diameter (about 1/5 in.), a device that has only been available for about five years.

“The Impella is threaded up to the heart, from a small incision in the groin,” said Dr. Parikh. “It’s also attached outside the body to a machine that pulls the blood and takes over ejecting it.”

The device allows the heart to rest and recover during the procedure. Dr. Parikh was able to clear the obstruction and put in two new stents.

About the “world’s smallest pump” “The use of Impella was lifesaving,” said Dr. Parikh. “It allowed us to focus on the repair [at a reasonable rate], rather than having to do anything hastily.

As a result, his heart function was able to recover rapidly.

He added that Balawa’s heart’s ability to pump improved from around 10 percent to 70 percent within just a few days.

“I’m happy to be alive and that I was in the right place at the right time,” said Bulawa, who presented thank-you cards and gifts to the paramedics and hospital’s nursing staff.

“They took good care of me,” he said. “And the ER folks came up to see me (in my hospital room). A couple of their interns talked about how glad they were to see me revived. It made them appreciate the purpose in what they do.”

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced last week that Kenneth Bardlett, 24, of Bellwood, has been sentenced to 22 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for his role in the 2014 murder of Bensenville tobacco store owner Hussein Saghir.

On March 27, 2014, Bardlett entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, a Class X Felony, for the crime. As part of his plea agreement, Bardlett agreed to testify truthfully against any and all co-defendants involved in the murder. In exchange, the State agreed to a sentencing recommendation of twenty years to be served at 85%.

During the trial against one of his co-defendants however, Bardlett lied while on the witness stand. Consequently, the State filed a motion to withdraw the plea agreement. This motion was granted by the court and First Degree Murder charges were reinstated against Bardlett.

Additionally, the Court also found Bardlett in contempt of court for “engaging in unruly verbal and physical behavior” and for “providing false testimony” and sentenced Bardlett to 180 days in the County jail with credit for time served.

Two other men, both from Chicago, were charged in the murder - Tremayne Davis, 27 and Stephan Russell, 25. On December 2, 2016, Davis entered a plea of guilty to one count of Attempt Armed Robbery with a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and sentenced to eight years in the IDOC. Following a three-day-long trial in November 2017, a jury found Russell guilty of two counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Attempt

Russell’s next court appearance was scheduled for June 18 for sentencing in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., January 19, 2014, Bardlett, Davis and Russell went to the Sam’s Tobacco and Foodmart on Irving Park Road in Bensenville. While Davis remained in the vehicle, Bardlett and Russell encountered Saghir and his brother outside the store as the men were preparing to close up for the evening.

Following a brief altercation between the men, Saghir was shot and killed.

After the murder, Bardlett, Davis and Russell fled the scene. An investigation led by the Bensenville Police Department, the Major Crimes Task Force and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office led authorities to the men.

“Regardless of what Mr. Bardlett has said or done in the past in relation to this case, the fact remains that Mr. Saghir is no longer here, able to share in the lives of his loved ones,” Berlin said. “For his role in the murder, Mr. Bardlett will now spend the next twenty-two years of his life behind bars. Our judicial system is a truth-seeking process and for this system to work properly it must be safeguarded from misstatements, mischaracterizations and especially outright lies aimed at distorting the truth. Mr. Bardlett had a deal – to tell the truth when called upon. He chose to ignore that deal in an effort to infect the judicial system and in doing so added years to his prison sentence.”

Bardlett will be required to serve 100% of his sentence. He will receive credit for time served in jail awaiting trial.

Public input on watershed plan online or at open meeting Area includes parts of Elmhurst, Villa Park, Lombard, unincorporated areas

The DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee voted to open the public comment period for the draft Sugar Creek Watershed Plan. The 30-day public comment period is open now through July 12.

The plan outlines projects that may improve flood control throughout the Sugar Creek Watershed, which includes portions of Lombard, Villa Park and Elmhurst, as well as unincorporated DuPage County.

DuPage County Stormwater Management will also hold a public meeting to discuss the draft watershed plan on Wednesday, June 27 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. at Villa Park’s

Village Hall, 20 S. Ardmore Ave. The draft watershed plan is available online at dupageco.org/EDP/ Stormwater_Management/57608.

In addition, hard copies are available for review at DuPage County’s Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Rd., Wheaton, during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

KC Council #8365 partners with DSCC to assist seniors

Knights of Columbus Fr. John Barrett Council #8365 in Villa Park has donated $2,000 to DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC). On June 4, Jes Silva, Roger R. Dooley, and George Laarveld presented a check to DSCC. All funds raised and donated will go towards the services DSCC provides seniors in DuPage County.

DSCC provides a variety of services that help seniors meet their basic needs, live safely in their own homes and communities, and maintain their integrity, independence, and physical and mental well-being.

DSCC’s services ensure seniors have access to sufficient healthy food, provide a regular well-being check, help seniors maintain their homes and yards, combat senior loneliness and isolation, and more. DSCC’s services not only promote the health and longevity of seniors, but also support their independence by helping to meet the increased needs, which accompany the aging process.

DSCC’s services provide a safety net for all DuPage seniors in need, and DSCC has been credited with saving the lives of several seniors.

Addison June 10 A 45-year-old Addison woman was charged with domestic battery in the 200 block of W. Army Trail at around 7:53 p.m. Police said the suspect punched a victim in the face with a closed fist, pushed him and threw beer bottles at him.

June 9 A 30-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of S. La Londe at around 3:26 a.m. Police said the suspect grabbed the victim’s throat and choked her, then punched her on the left side of her stomach, and scratched

her right ear.

June 8 Angel Hernandez, 22, of Schaumburg, was charged with criminal damage to property near Lake and Route 83 at around 4:19 p.m. Police said Hernandez threw a car jack at an apartment window, damaging the window.

Villa Park June 9 Anthony R. Galto, 40, of Geneva, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance near Addison and St. Charles at around 7:21 p.m.

A 27-year-old Palatine man was charged with domestic battery at a motel at around 4:10 a.m.

June 8-June 9 Criminal damage was reported in the 300 block of N. Ardmore. Police said an unknown suspect smashed the driver’s side mirror of a vehicle parked in the train lot sometime between 7 a.m. June 8 and 11 a.m. June 9.

Battery was reported at a store at around 6:56 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect punched a victim in the face while the victim sat outside of the store.

June 4 Retail theft was reported at a game store at around 11:54 a.m. Police said an unknown male suspect entered the store and removed items from display, and left the store without paying for the items.

For those choosing this option, Linden Oaks eases withdrawal symptoms in the medically monitored inpatient detoxification unit. There, under the care of a psychia-

trist and other Linden Oaks addiction specialists, support, monitoring and medications for specific symptoms, such as anti-nausea pills, are provided.

Says Dr. Weiner, “This approach can work for some, especially if they’ve only been using opioids for a short time. But in general, studies have found up to a 90 percent relapse rate for people who don’t use medications to begin their period of sobriety from

opioids.”

For those choosing to begin sobriety with the help of Linden Oaks’ MAT Clinic, services are available without a physician’s order to anyone who wants to begin the process of change. A patient can start at the clinic, or move there after an inpatient, residential or outpatient treatment program.

In addition to the MAT Clinic, Linden Oaks Addiction Services offers a variety of treatment levels, includ-

Uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can be a major barrier for those attempting to recover from addiction to opioids.

“You might experience bad flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue,” says Aaron Weiner, PhD, Director of Addiction Services at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health in Naperville. “There are ways of managing these symptoms. Although withdrawal from opioids can’t kill you, it can be extremely unpleasant, stopping many from wanting to move forward towards health.”

The first option, ongoing medication-assisted therapy, can be initiated either in an inpatient or outpatient environment. Some addiction programs administer methadone, but at the Linden Oaks Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) Clinic, patients receive Suboxone, which is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, which is used to reverse overdoses.

“Buprenorphine is less sedating than methadone and easier than methadone to taper off from when the person is ready to stay sober without any pharmaceutical assistance,” says Dr. Weiner.

According to the Merck Manual Consumer Version, “In many countries, buprenorphine has replaced methadone in detoxification programs.”

Linden Oaks’ MAT Clinic also features medical supervision, regular drug testing and group therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy, a key approach used in the group sessions, helps patients challenge negative patterns of thought that lead to unwanted

ACA begins free summer concerts

The Addison Center for the Arts will begin its free summer concerts in the park with Lake Effect on Tuesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. in the Gazebo on the Addison Village grounds, One Friendship Plaza. Willowbrook’s Perkins named coach of the year School announces fall sports practice start dates

Willowbrook boys basketball coach was a recent recipient of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 4A District 7 coach of the year honor.

Perkins was honored during a banquet at Illinois State University.

Perkins has been a coach in the Willowbrook program for 10 years and completed his seventh season as head coach this past school year. Perkins is a 2004 graduate of Willowbrook and played on the basketball team.

Perkins’ 2017-2018 team won the program’s first regional title since 2004 (which was Perkins’ senior year under the late Dennis Doyle) and advanced

to a sectional final. Willowbrook also set a school record by going 26-6. The previous record was set a year earlier.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by your peers with this title, but this award certainly is bigger than just me,” he told the District 88 website.

“It takes the help of so many people to get to this level of success as a team. It takes support from the administration and commitment from the coaching staff and players. This recognition is a reflection of the hard work all those individuals give to the boys basketball program at Willowbrook.”

Perkins is a special-education teacher in the District 88 Transition Program, which helps individuals ages 18 to 21 who have disabilities learn life skills, obtain job training in a community setting and transition to life after District 88.

Jacob Grygo’s older brother, Eric, was a key contributor this past season on the Benedictine University men’s basketball team out of Lisle.

Eric Grygo helped Benedictine go 17-10 overall and 15-5 in conference play. He started all 27 of the games he played in, averaging 25.5 minutes of action each night. Grygo finished third on the team in scoring at 12.1 points per game while shooting a blistering .636 from the field (138 of 217). He also shot .746 from the free-throw line and was tops on the team in rebounding at 7.9 per game. Grygo added

Leyva at Saint Xavier Addison Trail alum Elias Leyva now plays men’s soccer at Saint Xavier in Chicago. Leyva finished last season with two goals, four assists and eight points.

He took 18 shots and eight shots on goal. Leyva was credited with one game-winning goal and converted the only penalty kick he took. Leyva helped Saint Xavier win 10 games last season.

Prior to Saint Xavier, Leyva played two years at Moraine Valley Community College where he scored a total of 21 goals to go with 14 assists. His 32 points in his final season at Moraine led the team.

The Elmhurst junior American Legion Post 187 team split a pair of recent road games.

In a 20-11 loss to Moultrie-Douglas American Legion Post 479 at Shelbyville High School, the two teams combined for 31 runs and 29 hits, but Elmhurst was stung by six errors.

Moultrie-Douglas led 7-1 after two innings and then strung togeth-

er 13 more runs over the fourth and fifth innings.

Alexis Cotto went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jose Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Alanzo Howard went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Nathan Kriz went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Andrew Pietrucha went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Nick DeSimone had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Justin Lomax had a hit, a run scored and an

IC Catholic Prep’s strong girls soccer season did not go unnoticed.

The Knights placed numerous players on the all-conference and all-sectional teams.

Grace Fuller and Olivia Hurt were named to the all-sectional team while Bella Leslie was named to the all-sectional honorable-mention team.

Fuller, Sophie Zanoni and Hurt

were named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division team for their efforts.

IC Catholic Prep finished the season 16-11 overall and went 3-3 in conference play.

The Knights won regional and sectional titles and finished as one of the top eight teams in Class 1A after competing in a Class 1A supersectional.

out the season. We took some losses, but they were competitive losses that prepared us for the state tournament.”

Godinez said a number of factors played into the team’s long playoff run. “They had good communication and a strong soccer IQ,” he said.

“They improved and they worked together. The girls knew they needed each other much more. They relied on each other more as the season went on.”

Godinez was in his first year as the Knights’ head coach. “They have an ability to adapt to different coaching,” he said. “They had gone through a coaching change. Grace Fuller had different coaches freshman, sophomore and senior year.

They did a great job adapting to a different style of coaching.”

Fuller and Hurt were the team leaders in goals. “For us it was more about unselfish play,” said Godinez.

“We had a lot of people score for us, it was not just Grace and Olivia. The distribution of goals to other players was important. Sophie Zanoni, Bella Leslie, Abi Wagner and Sophie Hurt, who is a freshman, were some of the others who scored big goals for us.

We had two girls who led us in scoring, but we also had other girls who came up with some big goals for us.”

Godinez said a pair of unsung heroes on the team were Sophie Hurt and Annie Guinan. “With them our defensive awareness went up,” he said. “Sophie Hurt scored goals and

The Muddogs then notched a 7-6 win over Pirates Baseball in a game played at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

Elmhurst returned to conference action where it lost 5-0 to Wheaton Post 76. Elmhurst was limited to two hits in the game and trailed 4-0 after two innings.

Orrico and Jack Enright each had a hit. Tamaine Durr took the loss. He struck out three and allowed only one earned run. Vogel pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief and struck out five.

Elmhurst had a busy early-week schedule this week with games scheduled against Lake in the Hills Post 1231 on the road and then ballgames with Elgin Post 57 and Highland, Indiana Post 180 at Plunkett in Elmhurst.

Community Needs grants awarded to 36 local charities

On June 12, the DuPage Foundation completed a record-breaking Spring Community Needs Grant season when, for the first time in one distribution cycle, more than $500,000 was awarded to organizations working in the area of health and human services. Recipients, along with Foundation Trustees, Grant Committee members, donors, and staff, were all smiles during the milestone event where the critical work these not-forprofit organizations are doing was

Bond set for man accused of shooting at Stratford Square Mall DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Bloomingdale Director of Public Safety Frank Giammarese announced last week that bond had been set for a Glendale Heights man accused of shooting a loss prevention officer at the Burlington Coat Factory store at Stratford Square Mall in Bloomingdale. Keonte Griffin, 23, of Glendale Heights, appeared at a bond hearing, where Judge Jeffrey MacKay set bond at $750,000 with 10% to apply. Griffin has been charged with one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, a Class X Felony; and, one count of Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, a Class 3 Felony.

At approximately 1:28 p.m. on June 12, 2018, officers with the Bloomingdale Police Department were dispatched to the Stratford Square Mall for a report of shots fired. Upon their arrival, officers found the Loss Prevention Officer and victim sitting at the store with both men suffering from gunshot wounds. The Loss Prevention Officer had been shot once in the shoulder and the defendant had been shot once through his hand and into his thigh.

It is alleged that prior to the arrival of police, the victim had escorted Griffin from the store after Griffin

allegedly urinated into a bottle while in a changing room and then kicked the bottle over in the changing room, spilling the contents. It is alleged that Griffin wanted to return to the store but was prohibited from doing so by the victim. It is further alleged that Griffin then pulled a loaded gun and shot the victim. A brief struggle ensued resulting in Griffin being shot.

Both men received treatment for their injuries.

“The allegations against Mr. Griffin are extremely serious and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank the Loss Prevention Officer for his efforts in disarming and detaining the suspect in this case and note that it is certainly good news that he is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.”

Griffin’s next court appearance was scheduled for June 19, 2018, in front of Judge MacKay. Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Mr. Rogers made the most of his neighborhood. I try to do the same – by walking the different streets in the name of “exercise.”

As a bonus, along the way I make interesting and not-so-interesting observations. You can learn a lot by walking the neighborhood, which is completely different from casing the neighborhood. Which I do not condone or recommend. In any circumstance.

While walking the streets (not streetwalking, which I also do not condone) you can practice your botany skills, learning which trees bud out first in the spring and which flowers bloom when. You note which neighbors grow their own vegetables and who cultivates rosebushes and perennial beds. You also discover who prefers low-maintenance shrubs instead of finicky roses and who takes the hands-off approach one step further by sticking artificial geraniums in their window boxes.

You learn who is planning for an addition – lumber in the driveway.

You also learn who is planning for an addition – infant stroller box next to a garbage can. Yards with swing sets and driveways with little bikes make for houses with children. Same goes for sidewalk chalk art.

Some people have fire pits surrounded by circles of lawn chairs and tiki torches. I think those people might make good friends. Ditto that for decks and front porches with porch swings. Other people have bird feeders. Feeding the birds is a nice thing to do. People who feed birds have friendship potential written all over them. They probably hobnob with the neighbors with fire pits and porches. Speaking of birds, remnants of a tiny blue eggshell lying on the sidewalk reveals baby robins have recently hatched in a tree nearby.

A home’s size does not dictate the expanse of the corresponding garage.

Tiny homes often have colossal garages. A person’s garage is their castle. Makes me wish I had a bigger garage. #garageenvy.

attention to during neighborhood walks is dogs. Dogs may be man’s best friend, but they do not always give the same love to walkers – male, female or of the zombie variety.

You can usually tell friendly dogs from the non-friendly sort by examining their tails. An upwardly wagging tail is a happy tail and a dog’s tail does not lie. Still it’s safer to give dogs a large berth and cross to the other side of the street when confronted with one of unknown temperament.

Sometimes you come upon a cat, but you can’t be sure which house the cat owns because cats prefer to be mysterious that way. Once a kitten followed me for about three blocks.

I got to a busy intersection and was afraid to cross for fear the kitten would get hit by a car. Luckily he or she decided to head to her own home instead of following me to mine.

During an early morning stroll you learn who recently cleaned out a closet or garage because they have a bunch of stuff sitting on the curb next to a piece of cardboard with FREE written on it in large capital letters.

A yard sale indicates a neighbor has cleaned out their entire basement and not just a closet. A moving sale lets you know you will soon get new neighbors. And new neighbors can be exciting. You’ll never know if they’ll feed the birds or install a new fire pit or invite you over to sit on their deck.

The possibilities are endless.

I’m pretty sure Mr. Rogers would agree.

DuPage Animal Services unveils specialty veterinary vehicle DuPage County Animal Services and DuPage Animal Friends today unveiled a new, state-of-the-art, 26foot, specialty veterinary vehicle for DuPage County Animal Services (DCAS). The specialty veterinary vehicle is the result of a donation from the Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy to DuPage Animal Friends, made possible by DuPage Animal Friends board member Amanda Yancey.

The specialty veterinary vehicle is equipped with a fully-operational surgical suite, treatment/exam area, and housing for cats and dogs.

The vehicle is capable of support-

ing mobile spay/neuter and other surgical procedures, dentistry, diagnostic procedures such as X-ray, blood work, grooming, microchipping, vaccinations and more. When not providing medical services, the vehicle can also double as a mobile adoption unit.

“For the first time ever, DCAS will be able to provide targeted mobile spay/neuter and veterinary services to our rescue partners and to the public, provide medical assistance via emergency disaster response and mobilize our humane education and adoption efforts,” said Animal Services Committee Chairman Brian Krajewski.
