Cortesi Park rededicated in honor of veterans

Finishing touches to a $200,000 renovation were completed just in time for the Memorial Day rededication of Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park. The old “missile park” is located at the intersection of Cortesi and Kenilworth Avenues, just west of Villa Ave. The overhaul included improvements such as new benches, sidewalks, landscaping sod and a watering system. A drinking fountain was relocated to the park, and the Train Depot was renovated on the property. The centerpiece of the park, named after World War II veteran Dr. L.R. Cortesi, is a memorial plaza featuring flag poles and columns honoring each of the service branches. Brick paver stones commemorating individuals’ service in the U.S. Armed Forces also ring the area. A dedication ceremony was held at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day. Members of the Villa Park VFW Post #2801, public officials, the Willowbrook High School Choir and residents were on hand for the official park ribbon cutting. There was also a reading of the names of local veterans who passed away during the last year.
