Montini Catholic hosts end of year cookout for students and faculty

Mother Nature contributed to Montini Catholic’s annual end of the year cookout on Thursday and Friday, May 11 and 12 by making sure the weather was nothing less than perfect!

Cafeteria tables and chairs were hauled outside and students and staff were treated to an outdoor barbecue to celebrate the end of the school year. (Seniors - Thursday; Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors - Friday) Students also received their much anticipated yearbooks and spent their lunchtime signing pages and reminiscing about their year.

Police standoff ends with suspect’s arrest

Wednesday, June 7, at about 8 p.m., the Independent received a tip that an apparent hostage situation was underway in the 200 block of Plymouth in Villa Park. A witness saw a large group of police vehicles surrounding a residence and viewed one officer walking toward the house with a M-16 rifle.

As it turned out, the incident was not in fact a hostage situation but rather, a person of interest in two other criminal investigations had barricaded himself inside the house. He was not holding hostages.

The incidents in question allegedly occurred on the 900 block of West North Avenue in Villa Park, detectives said. One involved the unlawful discharge of a firearm on June 6 and the second, a robbery that occurred on May 29. The person of interest was also wanted on an active warrant issued by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a release issued by the Villa Park Police Department, at approximately 3 p.m., detectives located a person of interest involving these incidents at a residence on the 200 block of East Plymouth in Villa Park.

Upon making contact, the subject refused to exit the residence. Due

to the concern that the subject may be armed with a handgun, the NIPAS Swat Team was requested to the scene. The subject continued a standoff and refused to exit the residence after being advised he was under arrest.

The subject eventually surrendered to officers and was taken into custody unharmed. Detectives subsequently served a search warrant on the residence and recovered a handgun and ammunition.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.

Update to story: Identity of suspect released 6/8/17 at 12:30 p.m.

In regards to the incident, suspect Timothy Jackson, 25, of Villa Park, was charged with Unlawful Possession of Weapon by Felon, being a firearm which is a class 2 felony and Resisting a police officer, a class A misdemeanor. Jackson was transported to the DuPage County Jail to be held for bond court.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.

VFW has plans in works for 4th of July Parade The Villa Park VFW is putting the wheels in motion for Villa Park’s annual Independence Day Parade which steps off at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 4.

Planners are currently seeking entries for the parade. There is no charge to be in the parade, but a $50 donation would be appreciated to help offset the costs of the event. People or groups can enter a float, vehicles, or marching unit. Due to accidents in a past parade, no water implements are allowed. This will be strictly enforced by the Villa Park Police Department along the parade route for both spec-

tators and participants. All water implements will be confiscating at the beginning of the parade.

Parade formation begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church parking lot at Ardmore, across from the Villa Park Library. The parade steps off at 12 noon, going west on Central to Harvard, south on Harvard to Madison, east on Madison to Summit, north on Summer to Park, West on Park to Ardmore for dispersal This year’s theme is “POW / MIA Never forgotten.”

Conroy seeking applicants for summer legislative internships State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is seeking high school and college students interested in state government and community outreach to apply for a summer internship in her Villa Park district office.

“Internships are an excellent way for students to learn about government through hands-on experience,” Conroy said. “This internship provides students an opportunity to learn about the power of civic engagement and the many skills necessary to successfully reach out and serve diverse communities. Many of my past interns have gone on to study political science or pursue careers in government.”

Interns will have the opportunity to act as a liaison between constituents and the state of Illinois, research legislation and plan community outreach events. Students will gain invaluable experience that will be beneficial for any future career. Hours are flexible and the internship will be based in Conroy’s constituent office at 28 S. Villa Ave., in Villa Park.

Internships are unpaid, but Conroy’s office may work with academic advisors for students eligible to earn college credit.

Villa Park’s 12th annual Summerfest opens Friday

The “Date Night” Car Show takes place Friday from 6-11 p.m. when the beer garden opens up for the first time and music takes over the Main Stage. On Saturday, there will be activities for all ages including a bounce house, face painting, rides and attractions, as well as food, a business expo, a karate demonstration and a reptile show.

Cullerton and Palmisano agree school funding changes good for DuPage Schools State Senator Tom Cullerton passed a series of reforms to help lower Villa Park property taxes and ensure DuPage schools are fairly funded.

Cullerton worked to pass a series of reforms that will lead to property tax savings through government consolidation measures, property tax relief and working to guarantee Illinois schools are funded the right way.

Senate Bill 3, which will spread Cullerton’s bipartisan government consolidation model statewide, passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support. This measure will allow counties to dissolve certain units of local government through a voter referendum.

“My goal is to save money, reduce taxes and make sure government is working for the people,” he said. “The

best way to lower property taxes is to put government consolidation decisions in the hands of the people who receive the services. This one small step will lower property tax bills and streamline government services.”

Cullerton supported Senate Bill 1, which will help schools such as Villa Park School District 45, Queen Bee School District 16 and U-46, which have been shortchanged for decades under the existing education funding formula.

These districts could soon see a significant increase of funding to level the playing field with neighboring school districts but not at the expense of other schools. No school district in Illinois will lose funding under the new proposed formula.

The increase in funding to schools

passed by the Senate this legislative session will work toward giving schools in need of extra support based on an evidence-based model that accounts for factors such as students with disabilities and low-income students.

Superintendent Anthony Palmisano, Villa Park School District 45, joined superintendents, school administrators and educators across DuPage County and Illinois to support Senate Bill 1.

“Senate Bill 1 supports School District 45’s vision to prepare students to successfully navigate a changing and dynamic world. Past reform initiatives created winners and losers during a time when it is most critical to ensure all students have the tools necessary to succeed,” Palmisano said.

The Mass, held in the school’s West Wing Field House at 10 a.m., was presided over by Most Rev. Bishop Joseph M. Siegel, Auxiliary Bishop Vicor General of the Diocese of Joliet.

The ceremonies wrapped up two weeks of graduation celebrations and activities including the annual Academic Awards Banquet held on Thursday, May 4 and Founder’s Day Award Ceremony held on Friday, May 19.

Following the Mass, commencement exercises began with a meditation/performance of “Like An Eagle” by Montini’s Chamber and Varsity Choirs. Senior members left their seats and joined their peers for one last performance together.

Be aware of ticks while outdoors Warmer weather is here and as you make plans to be outdoors, be sure to take steps to guard against ticks. Ticks are a threat year-round, but they are more active in warmer months—especially April through September.

Ticks live in and near wooded areas, tall grass and weeds, and where the ground is covered with leaves.

Ticks can carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

To protect against tick bites and the diseases they can spread, take these steps: • Keep your grass mowed and control weeds around your home.

• Remove leaf litter.

• Clear tall grasses and brush around your home and at the edge of your lawn.

• Wear a white or light-colored long-sleeved shirt and long pants tucked into your socks or boots when you’re outdoors.

• Wear a hat or head covering for added protection.

• Check for ticks on your clothing often.

• Apply insect repellent containing DEET to

your clothes and exposed skin (except the face and hands).

• Walk in the center of trails to avoid leaf litter and tall grass.

• Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you.

Check for ticks on children, pets and yourself when returning from outdoors. If you find a tick, remove it right away by using fine-point tweezers to gently pull it straight out.

After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.

Ticks can spread diseases that may cause serious illness and death. If you have a rash, or become sick with a fever after a tick bite, it’s important to see a doctor.

Addison June 8 • Police said an officer responded to the Palatine Police Department to transport Michelle A. Palinsky, 28, of Palatine who had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for unlawful possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

• Mario J. Perez Jr., 29, of Glendale Heights, was charged with possession of an altered/fictitious ID and for having only one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near Mill and Army Trail at around 12:45 a.m. Police said the suspect was found to be in possession of an altered driver’s

license.

• Peter Tulkiendorf, 34, of Lombard, was charged with battery, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and criminal damage to a vehicle in the 800 block of Lombard Road at around 10:47 p.m. Police said Tulkiendorf entered a victim’s vehicle and punched the victim several times on the face. As the victim fled, Tulkiendorf damaged the victim’s vehicle, according to police, and then pulled away from officers in an attempt to resist arrest, as well as make physical threats against a police officer.

June 2 Steve C. Cleary, 52, of Elk Grove Village, was charged with DUI in the 700 block of N. Mill Road at around 8:23 p.m. Police said an officer responded to a call of a driver asleep in his vehicle. Cleary was found to be DUI. • Theft was reported in the 900 block of W. North Ave. Police said that between 9:15 and 9:30 a.m., an unknown suspect stole a bicycle that was left unsecured near the front stairs.

• Two female juveniles from Villa Park were charged with retail theft and unlawful consumption of alcohol in the 1-100 block of S. Villa at around 11:58 p.m.

June 2 • A 24-year-old Villa Park woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 500 block of S. Harvard at around 6:52 p.m.

• Theft was reported in the 1400 block of S. Oakland. Police said that between 7 p.m. June 1 and 5:30 a.m.

District again offers free wood chips at Blackwell Nursery June 17

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites the public to pick up free wood chips on Saturday, June 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the District’s native plant nursery at Blackwell Forest Preserve, 29W218 Mack Road in West Chicago.

Individuals may bring vehicles no larger than a pickup truck to take mulch. A District employee will be on hand with a tractor to help fill trailers or truck beds. People who want smaller amounts should bring their own containers.

Montini Catholic students look forward to summer opportunity While all Montini Catholic students are busy preparing for the end of the school year while looking forward to summer activities, some are planning for a summer of service and their annual team-up with Habitat for Humanity. This year, under the leadership of Campus Minister Michael Blanchette and teacher Denis Block, a Bronco team will be traveling to Winona, Minn., on July 11-15 to aid in the building of homes for families in need.

“Students who take part in our Habitat for Humanity trips are a unique group,” said President Jim Segredo.

Block is humbled by the drive and dedication of his students.

“Logan is the largest city in Hocking County, yet only has a population of 7,000,” said Block. “Our students worked at two different

build sites and worked two mornings packing boxes of food at the local food bank.”

Block and the team were accompanied by teacher Hilda Castor on the Spring Break venture.

“The day after we arrived, our group worked at a site in Caldwell, Ohio,” he said. “A foundation was already laid and our group’s task was to dig a trench for draining pipe, then to seal the foundation with tar.

After that painstaking day, the work was easier as the week went on.”

The next day the Montini group traveled to a second build site.

“Our task was to mount siding around the house as well as accomplish some tasks on the inside,” Block said. “The contractors were great and the people of the town

were incredibly hospitable. Even though we were rained out a day and a half, we were able to mount siding on about 75% of the home.”

When storms arrived and made it impossible for them to continue their work, they traveled to a local food bank to pack boxes of food for those in need.

During their downtime, Block, Castor and the students were able to explore huge caves and waterfalls in the area.

“They enjoyed playing games, doing homework, and simply enjoying the company of one another,” he said. “We were very fortunate to be able to stay at The Bowen House, a very unique 186 year old home.”

The Bowen House was first built in 1831 (40 years before the Great

Chicago Fire). It serves as a community center offering various activities for the townspeople. Block and his team had their own private space on the home’s second floor.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Block. “Montini is very excited to build a new relationship with Southeast Ohio Habitat for Humanity.”

Students at Montini Catholic have been participating Habitat for Humanity during spring break since 2004.

“Montini Catholic is proud to participate with such a wonderful organization that makes a difference in people’s lives,” Blanchette said.

“We are so grateful to our students who give up their own time to help others.”

Hitting the sauce

I’ve always been a saucy type. It probably started with ketchup – my first encounter with sauce when I was just a tiny tator tot of a girl. Almost everyone has some sort of experience with ketchup. Many of us have a long-term ongoing relationship and find it hard to imagine life without ketchup. My husband is a spreader. I am a dipper.

What started with ketchup grew and expanded to various flavors and varieties of thickened liquids called by different names – condiments, gravies, dips, salsas, dressings, syrups, pestos and alfredos – but at their essence each one a sauce of some sort.

Savory or sweet, thick or thin, white or red, cheesy or creamy, hot or cold – I loved them all. Or at least nearly all. What’s not to love? Sauces themselves are created for the sole purpose of enhancing a dish. Whether

a name for a cook specializing in the practice: saucier. It’s an art. The French, especially, are known for their love of sauces – Hollandaise, remoulade and Bechamel to name a few. But the French aren’t the only ones saucing it up. Sauces are an essential element of nearly every cuisine worldwide – from chimichurri in Argentina to sriracha in Thailand and everywhere in between. The world would be lost without sauce.

I’m not a chef, but I do dabble in sauces. When you love something like I love eating it makes sense to know how to concoct a few sauces yourself. I toss, stir and whisk together gravy, salad dressing and condiments a plenty. I even do the roux.

Once you break sauces down into a list of simple ingredients, (and most are fairly simple) they aren’t so intimidating.

Historically, it’s the reason they were created – not to make good food great, but to mask the less-than-perfect flavor of food on the verge of going bad. This was back in the days before refrigerators were a common household item.

Professional chefs study for years to perfect their sauces. There’s even

Gravy is just thickened meat, chicken or vegetable stock seasoned to your liking. Combine mayonnaise and dill pickle relish and you’ve got tartar. Take that same mayo, add sweet relish, ketchup and vinegar and you’ve got thousand island dressing.

Ketchup, mayo and horseradish make a mean cocktail sauce for shrimp.

Ketchup, brown sugar and little yellow mustard create a basic barbecue sauce. Ketchup and just about anything makes something else. You can take it from there.

Whisk together olive oil with vinegar (you choose the flavor), salt and pepper for a basic salad dressing.

Mayo with avocado is the simplest of guacamoles. Add onion, lemon juice and/or salsa to kick it up a notch. Speaking of salsa, all you need is tomatoes, peppers (jalepeno and/ or bell), onion, lime juice and your

choice of seasonings (salt, pepper, cayenne, garlic, cilantro). Four ingredients plus seasonings isn’t too bad for homemade salsa. The freshness factor itself is worth the time it takes to chop those tomatoes.

Sauces elicit creativity. They are bolstered by it and food is bolstered by them. It’s a win-win situation.

Your pastas, burgers, enchiladas, potatoes, salads, broccoli as well as the good folks sitting around your dinner table – will all benefit from your awesome sauce.

So go for it. Who knows? Some day you may be like me – the boss of sauce. Wink.

Our most recent vacation did not take us to the mountains, but instead to the hills of southwestern Wisconsin.

Spring is spectacular for the sights; wildflowers everywhere, the trees bursting with bright new greenery,

and the temps mild and pleasant. We explored and delighted upon each new vista. “It’s so pretty,” my oft-repeated phrase.

My Prince and I knew that it was more than a house built out on the jutting rock, an architectural marvel.

It also is home to the now-deceased owner’s eclectic collections. I assumed we were entering a tacky tourist rip-off so my expectations were nil. That’s the way to travel through life: expect a little bit of weirdness and be happily surprised at all the lovely that accompanies it too.

I’m glad we had the rainy day so now I know for myself that The House on the Rock is worth a visit. The house is peculiar (and dark) (and portions have low ceilings), but the fact that it exists at all is, in my professional jargon, way cool.

Imagine the scene in 1945 before the house existed: a tall bluff rock surrounded by pines and valley. The view is breathtaking and wanting to live there makes perfect sense. Building a house there? That takes a bit of crazy.

The owner, Alex Jordan, was that kind of crazy. He had been fascinated with architecture and gadgets his whole life and this house is a testament to that. I love when people take their passions and turn them into reality.

When he discovered that he couldn’t keep curious strangers away from his project, he decided to charge admission. Fifty cents. Those funds fueled the continual additions that continued until his death at age 75 in 1989. A man named Art Donaldson, a friend of Alex who shared his vision, bought the property and has turned it into the mega-complex it is today.

Alex supposedly only stayed in the house for four nights, so it was never his home. He kept a modest apartment, but The House on the Rock was the playground for his imagination.

The man was an avid collector. Carousel horses. Guns. Doll houses. Circus toys. The tour encompasses room after room after room of stuff. One section is a recreation of an old Victorian town, something like Walt Disney

might create but Alex did it all indoors.

Dropping tokens into the huge calliope made me grin like a little kid.

There were several mammoth musical attractions, old school automatron kind of things but delightfully charming. The chandeliers, the world’s largest carousel, the cars, the Japanese Gardens (which were actually outdoors), I found it all surprisingly lovely.

But don’t take my word. If you go (to any tourist attraction), do not read the hype stating how glorious it is and do not read the negative reviews telling how trashy it is. Go with a very neutral attitude and decide for yourself.

This particular place I would describe as an oddity, eclectic, eccentric, and yet somehow the man’s sense of wonder and joy came through. I read that Alex Jordan was “a complex and creative man filled with boundless energy.” That is evident.

One report stated, “He never grew old in his imagination and he continued to create every day of his life.” That is a wonderful legacy. Somehow among all the random massive collections and curiosities, a warm spirit of passion and creativity permeates. That is what I took away anyway. You may think it’s kooky, quirky, and offbeat. It is, and it’s also inspirational. Locals might have thought he was off his rocker, but the place has not fallen off the rock.

One unconventional man created a whimsical place. Take your oddball ideas and do something with them.

You might even be able to charge visitors fifty cents.

Chamber gears up for ‘Burgers, Bags and Business’

On Wednesday, Aug. 9 from 4-8 p.m. the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Burgers, Bags & Business event at Ruggard Gazebo at Ardmore and Park in downtown Villa Park.

The fundraiser will include gourmet burgers, ice cold beverages along with a bags tournament. “Throw” your support behind the Chamber and form a team.

There are opportunities for sponsorships as well, so members are invited to promote their business while supporting the event.

Sponsorships range fro $100 to $500.

Quartet of Addison Trail softball players named all-conference Blazers win playoff opener in dramatic fashion

The Addison Trail softball team received good postseason news times four recently.

The Blazers placed four players on the all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division team. Those earning recognition included Marie Baumgartner, Alyssa Pham, Ally Polhad and Vincenza Zaccaro.

“Getting four players on the all-conference team was nice,” said

Addison Trail coach Mark Olson.

Addison Trail finished the year 14-19 overall and went 6-6 in the WSC Gold.

“A 6-6 record in the conference is not disappointing,” said Olson.

“We were happy. We were really competitive the second time through the conference. We beat Hinsdale Central, we beat Willowbrook and played competitive against Downers Grove South. Getting to six wins was important for all-conference

Members of the Willowbrook boys volleyball team recently were honored for their efforts on and off the court.

Calvin Linnig was named to the all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division team.

Linnig also was one of four seniors that earned all-WSC academic honors along with Peter Alessandri, Andy Shreckengost and Brendan Waldorf.

Coach Ryan Bazon noted all four Willowbrook seniors on the roster earned the academic accolades.

Willowbrook finished the 2017 season with a 16-21 overall mark and a 1-5 record in WSC Gold Division action.

“We played better than our record portrays,” said Bazon.

Willowbrook dropped a 26-24, 20-25, 25-21 contest to St. Francis in the quarterfinals of the West Aurora regional.

Earlier, the Warriors went 2-3 at its own Willowbrook Warrior invitational. Willowbrook defeated Leyden 25-17, 25-15 and also defeated Joliet Catholic by a 25-22, 25-17 count. The Warriors dropped a three-set match to Hinsdale Central (25-14, 21-25, 1614), lost to Riverside-Brookfield (25-18, 26-24) and lost to West Aurora (25-21, 25-23). Hinsdale Central was a No. 1 sectional seed, while R-B was a No. 3 sectional seed and West Aurora was a No. 4 sectional seed.

“We played very well at our invite,” said Bazon. “I thought our kids played with enthusiasm and heart. We played Hinsdale Central to three games and even led 14-9 in the third game. I thought outblocking was fantastic and communication on the court led to a wellrounded game. Unfortunately, their outside hitter was too strong in the end and we dropped the third game 16-14. Also we played very well against Riverside-Brookfield, which ended up beating Hinsdale in the finals of the tourney. I felt this was a great tournament.”

Through the end of the season, Tim Keefe was leading the team in kills with 172. Waldorf had 112 kills and a 27.92 kill percentage.

Alessandri was the team leader in blocks with 71, while Keefe was tops in aces with 21. Buddy Martens was tops in digs with 215, while Linnig was leading the team in assists with 305.

Bazon felt the entire program took another step forward this season.

“I thought the season was very successful on all levels,” he said.

“Our program ended with 67 wins and the future of Willowbrook volleyball looks bright. At the varsity level we had 10 juniors this year and all saw substantial playing time. We should begin next year with more varsity experience and begin to play at a high level right away. This year it took us a few matches to adjust to the speed of the varsity game.”

Bazon also tipped his hat to the senior class.

“I had some great kids this year and I will miss our seniors greatly,” he said.

The Blazers won their Class 4A regional quarterfinal game against Elgin Larkin in dramatic fashion by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 10-9.

“It was one of the most unbelievable things I have been part of or been around as a player or coach,” said Olson. “It was pretty incredible.

It was a great story.”

Olson noted Addison Trail was down three runs with two outs in the seventh inning.

“And then the fence blows down and breaks and rips in half,” Olson described. “The umpire told us this story. Marie Baumgartner is in the box talking to herself and saying, ‘I can do this. I can do this.’ She hits

her first career home run to tie it at 9-9.”

Addison Trail then had three straight singles from Sophia Hawkins, Polhad and Pham. Hawkins scored the game-winning run on Pham’s single.

“When we had second and third with two outs and the game was tied 9-9 I told Ally whatever you do stay right on the base,” said Olson. “It was one of the stranger games I’ve been involved with. We slept-walk through things early on. We were hitting it hard but it was right at people and we gave them a few things. And then all of a sudden things clicked.”

Addison Trail was eliminated by St. Charles East in the regional semifinals.

“We made progress throughout the season,” said Olson. “We were a better team from where we began. We

got better from last year to this year.

We had a lot of returning kids back.

Allie and Marie averaged about a walk a game pitching at the end and we weren’t committing as many errors. We were making less than two a game. We also had great chemistry all season. All the girls bought into their roles. It was a great team effort.

The seniors like Jessica Bach, Marie Baumgartner and Gianna Sarli did a great job leading the way. It was a fun year to coach.”

Olson noted Bach played third base for three years, while Baumgartner also was a fixture.

“We know we have some big shoes to fill with losing starters like Jessica, Marie and Alyssa,” he said.

“We had 33 girls out for softball at the varsity and JV levels. We had a good year and we’re looking forward to next year.”

Timothy Christian’s Allen named to Class 2A all-state team

Timothy Christian junior baseball standout Jimmy Allen was properly rewarded for his play on the field this spring.

Allen recently was named to the Class 2A all-state team put out by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association. Allen was one of only four juniors to make the all-state team and assistant coach Jim Boven pointed out Allen was one of only four Chicago-area players named to the team.

Allen was a key cog in Timothy Christian winning its first-ever sectional title and coming within one game of playing in the state semifinals in Peoria.

“He had a great year,” said Timothy coach Jim Snoeyink. “He led our team in virtually every offensive category. He struck out seven times all season and his on-base percentage was outstanding.”

Allen batted .459 with 45 hits. Of those 45, hits 23 went for extra bases. Allen also had a .561 on-base percentage.

“More than half his hits were for extra bases,” Snoeyink noted. “He had an outstanding season.”

As did Timothy Christian as a whole, the coach noted.

“We had a good run at the end,” said Snoeyink. “We had a lot of fun.

We got on a roll. Part way through the year we made some defensive changes and that seemed to help. We had so many rainouts and breaks in the

schedule in the beginning of the year.

Once we started playing regularly we started getting in a rhythm. And then we started hitting the heck out of the ball and playing good baseball.”

One of those key defensive changes was swapping catcher Noah Marrera and third baseman Connor Gwaltney on defense. “That sparked us for some reason,” said Snoeyink. “We also started playing Nick Huisman more at first and moved Joey Davidson to second. Those two moves provided a spark for the rest of the season and helped us defensively. We played good baseball after that.”

Timothy defeated St. Joseph 2-1 in the regional championship by scoring two runs in the seventh inning.

The Trojans hit well in the sectional semifinal against Chicago F.W. Parker.

“F.W. Parker had a really good pitcher and we scored eight or nine runs off him. We came out hitting,” said Snoeyink.

Timothy also brought the heavy lumber in the sectional title game against Chicago Holy Trinity. “We jumped out to a quick start and led 7-2,” said Snoeyink.

Of note, Brian Schiff started both sectional games on the mound for the Trojans. “He got a pair of wins.

That’s unusual to start both games of the sectional,” the coach said. “He didn’t pitch a lot during the year, but he got healthy and he won both games.”

Huisman started the regional final

and picked up the win with Allen coming in for the save.

Timothy saw its season end at the hands of conference foe Chicago Christian. It was Timothy’s third loss of the season to Chicago Christian.

“Chicago Christian has good pitching,” said Snoeyink. “We got shut out three times against them. We lost 7-0 in the supersectional and we had two hits. I looked it up, Chicago Christian played 42 games and 27 times gave up zero or one run. You will win a lot of games doing that. It was frustrating because we were hitting so well and only had two hits.”

Allen, Schiff, Marrera and Davidson were named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference Red Division team. “All those guys had great seasons,” said Snoeyink.

Snoeyink is looking forward to next season with numerous players returning. “We have a lot of guys coming back,” he said. “We lost six seniors to graduation and we certainly will miss them. Josh Anderson is one of them and he could have been an all-conference player this year.

He was a four-year starter. We have Nick Huisman back and Jake Loerop pitched outstanding. Jimmy Allen is back. We’re excited about the guys we have coming back. Harrison Stanton is a freshman we brought up and we brought up Noah Marrera’s brother, Trent. We have a lot of guys we are looking forward to seeing next year and it is nice when you have your top three pitchers returning.”

School Board celebrates student council officers The Addison School District 4 Board of Education celebrated the leadership of Student Council officers and sponsors at its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 31. The meeting was held in Addison’s Village Hall in order to accommodate the large crowd of proud parents and family members who were in attendance to see their students’ presentations.

Each school principal introduced their school’s staff members who serve as Student Council sponsors.

The sponsors in turn introduced the students, who used the opportunity to talk about the programs, activities and fundraisers that their organization led and participated in.

After the presentation, Superintendent John Langton and School Board President congratulated the officers, thanked the sponsors, and presented them with pins and tokens of appreciation, before each school group took a photo.

Cullerton looks to increase voter participation

Roughly 17 percent of registered voters in DuPage County participated in the April 2017 elections.

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) wants to give Illinoisans the opportunity to vote for their school board members alongside candidates for the White House and U.S. Senate under his proposal to fight voter fatigue.

“School board members make important decisions about the future of our children and our property tax dollars, decisions they shouldn’t take lightly and neither should voters,” said Cullerton. “We can’t force people to go out and vote, but we can take steps to make it easier.”

After observing an extreme decrease in voter participation during consolidated elections, Cullerton introduced Senate Bill 441.

In the 23rd State Senate District alone there was a 58 percentage-point drop off in voter turnout in the 2013 consolidated elections compared to 2014 general elections.

“Our children can’t afford for less than 20 percent of our registered voters to elect vital representatives to make crucial decisions concerning their future,” Cullerton said.

SB 441 passed out of the Senate’s Executive Committee unanimously.
