City of Elmhurst joins IGA with Village for St. Charles Road bridge repair

Elmhurst to share cost of day-to-day maintenance

The Public Works and Buildings (PWB) Committee of the Elmhurst City Council met on Tuesday, May 28, to discuss Elmhurst’s participation in an Intergovernmental Agreement {IGA) with the Village of Villa Park and the Elmhurst Park District, related to the St. Charles Road Bridge Rehabilitation Project.

Located just west of Illinois Route 83 in the Pick Subdivision and leading into Villa Park, the four-lane St. Charles Road Bridge was constructed in 1979. As part of that construction, the state of Illinois, Villa Park, and the City of Elmhurst entered into an agreement that described the jurisdiction of the bridge as well as maintenance responsibilities.

The bridge is currently scheduled to have the bridge deck and substructure replaced beginning in the summer/ fall of 2019. According to the PWB report, those portions have met their useful life and need to be replaced for the safety of public motorists.

Village secures 80% funding for project Villa Park has taken the lead on the design of the bridge improvements and has already secured state and federal funding for 80% of the engineering and construction costs. Villa Park has asked Elmhurst to cover a proportionate share of the remaining local match (20% of total project cost) for both engineering and construction.

The proportionate share, based upon

the limits of the construction project, would be 52% for Villa Park and 48% for Elmhurst.

In addition, while the state currently has jurisdiction over the bridge, Villa Park carries on the day-to-day maintenance responsibilities of the structure. Therefore, Villa Park has asked that Elmhurst consider funding a 50% share of these maintenance responsibilities, because both municipal boundaries align at the structure. The City of Elmhurst felt the funding and maintenance requests by Villa Park were fair and equitable and a new IGA has been drafted to reflect the proposed changes to the funding and maintenance responsibilities between the two municipalities.

The new IGA includes the Elmhurst Park District by reference, as the Salt Creek Greenway Trail resides under the bridge, and within the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). All three entities – IDOT, the Elmhurst Park District and the Village of Villa Park -- reviewed the IGA and found it acceptable.

At its meeting on Monday, June 3, the Elmhurst City Council voted to approve the recommendation to enter into the IGA with the Village of Villa Park and the Elmhurst Park District.

In the interest of the project staying on the current construction schedule, the Elmhurst City Council suspended the rules to pass the recommendation at the same meeting. Later in the meeting, Council elected to approve and authorize the execution of the IGA.

‘Town Hall Tuesdays’ with Sen. Glowiak State Sen. Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) is inviting local residents to a series of Town Hall Tuesdays to talk major new laws after a historic legislative session in Springfield.

The freshman Senator prioritized bipartisan legislation that protected the privacy of assault survivors, educated workers to help end human trafficking and fought youth homelessness in Illinois.

Glowiak worked across party lines and also split from her democratic colleagues to vote against tax increases and push for fiscal responsibility in state government.

“We have had a busy session in Springfield,” Glowiak said. “There were trying issues and lively debates.

Throughout the process, my priority has remained placing the people of

the 24th State Senate District before politics.”

Link estimated that gambling expansion along with other revenue-raising measures in the bill could net Illinois more than $12 billion in the next six years.

“This key piece of legislation really is going to make an economic difference of keeping our dollars home,” he said, adding he expects “thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in construction across the state.”

That construction would go toward the six new casinos authorized by the

bill in Waukegan, Rockford, Danville, the south suburbs, Williamson County and downtown Chicago.

Casinos, race tracks and sports facilities that seat more than 17,000 people—such as Wrigley Field or United Center—would also be eligible to buy sports betting licenses under the bill, making Illinois one of about a dozen states to legalize the practice after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year allowed it.

In a news release June 1, Pritzker expressed his support for the measure and praised the lawmakers who have un-

successfully tried to expand gambling in the state for years.

“Legalized sports betting and expanding gaming will create jobs up and down the state, …where communities hungry for employment will see 10,000 new jobs,” he said. “Gaming expansions in this state have been attempted and failed for years. … Today is a win for the whole state.”

Revenues raised from the new casinos, the selling of sports betting licenses, and a higher tax on video gambling machines would go toward funding the vertical components of a long-term

capital infrastructure plan, such as state building renovations.

Sports betting licenses would range from $3.2 million to $20 million and be offered to both brick-and-mortar facilities and to online operators, with taxes of 15 percent.

Under the bill, race tracks in the state would be able to install slot machines and table games, turning them into racinos. A pilot program will also assess sports betting through the Illinois Lottery, a plan that was considered but dropped by lawmakers earlier in the session.

cultivators, processors, transporters and sellers. It also allows Illinois residents over age 21 to possess up to 30 grams, or roughly one ounce, of marijuana for personal use, and it allows people certified to use marijuana for medical purposes to grow up to five plants in their own homes.

Sales and possession would become legal under state law on Jan. 1, 2020, although marijuana is still illegal under federal law.

The bill also sets out a schedule of licensing fees and excise taxes that Rep. Kelly Cassidy, D-Chicago, said is expected to generate $58 million in the upcoming fiscal year, and as much as $500 million a year when the industry is fully mature.

“This is the beginning of the end of the war on drugs,” Cassidy said on the House floor just before the final vote.

Indeed, many supporters of legalization said their primary goal was to correct the inequities and social harms they say the war on drugs has had on black and Latino communities, who they argued have been disproportionately targeted for enforcement and incarceration for drug violations.

The bill would provide a mechanism under which hundreds of thousands of Illinois residents could have

criminal records for minor marijuana-related offenses expunged.

It also would direct a significant share of the revenues generated into community reinvestment programs for communities that have been disproportionately impacted by drug enforcement policies.

“We have been able to craft a policy that reinvests money in communities that have been divested in for the last 80 years,” said Rep. Jenhan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria.

The bill also does nothing to change the state’s medical marijuana program. In fact, people who hold li-

censes to operate medical marijuana dispensaries will have the first opportunity to obtain a second license for a recreational dispensary so retail sales can begin Jan 1.

Chris Stone, CEO of Ascend Wellness/HCI Alternatives, which operates medical dispensaries in Springfield and Collinsville, issued a statement after the vote saying that company would continue operating those outlets, adding: “We are excited for the future and look forward to serving even more people in the years to come.”

Critics of the bill, however, warned

about the public health and criminal justice effects that they said legalization would have.

Rep. Patrick Windhorst, R-Metropolis, cited a number of scientific studies that showed a correlation between marijuana use and violent behavior, including studies that showed an increase in violent crime in states that have recently legalized marijuana.

And Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, re-enacted a 1980s-era anti-drug advertisement by holding up an egg, saying, “This is your brain,” then breaking it into a frying pay and saying, “This is your brain on drugs.”

Illinois to legalize sports gambling, add casinos CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

Six new casinos, along with legalized sports betting, are coming to Illinois after Senate lawmakers approved a massive gambling expansion bill Sunday.

Senate Bill 690, sponsored by Indian Creek Democratic Sen. Terry Link, passed that chamber on a 46-10 vote after being approved by House lawmakers the day before. Gov. J.B. Pritzker has already announced his intention to sign it into law.

The Illinois House on May 31 passed a bill legalizing adult recreational marijuana in the state.

The 66-to-47 vote sends House Bill 1438 to Gov. J.B. Pritzker who campaigned in 2018 on a platform that included legalizing marijuana. The Senate approved the bill on May 29, 38-17.

That vote, however, came after a marathon debate that lasted nearly four hours, leaving lawmakers with less than 10 hours to complete the rest of their business for the session. That forced leaders to announce the House would continue meeting Saturday and Sunday.

With passage of the marijuana bill, Illinois is poised to become the 11th state in the nation to legalize its use by adults for recreational purposes.

But it would be the first to do so by a comprehensive statute enacted by the legislature rather than through a ballot initiative.

Vermont legalized marijuana through legislation in 2018, but that law covered only personal use and cultivation. It did not include retail sales.

On May 19, Willowbrook seniors Victoria Palma and Maxwell Polanek addressed more than 500 of their classmates as the student graduation speakers during Willowbrook’s 60th commencement ceremony.

Palma was chosen to speak based on her academic standing, as she is ranked in the top 5 percent of the class of 2019. Polanek will speak as President of the class of 2019.

Palma’s speech, entitled “Delta,” was meant to encompass all members of the class of 2019, focusing on how change is an inevitable experience, and while it might not feel right at the time, change can sometimes lead to the best outcome if you embrace it.

“I hope my speech inspires my classmates to cherish everything they’ve done,” Palma said, prior to the ceremony. “I plan to talk about all we’ve accomplished as a class and how changes in our lives can be looked at as opportunities to do even more and better. I truly feel this is the best graduating class of Willowbrook, and it’s a giant

honor to represent and encompass all of our experiences.”

More about Victoria Palma At the conclusion of her high school career, Palma will have completed 13 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses, as well as a multitude of honors courses. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction and has been named to the Distinction Honor Roll each semester of her high school career. She serves as President of Willowbrook’s National Honor Society and is an inductee of Civitas (Willowbrook’s Social Studies Honors Society) and Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society, as well as the Math, English and World Language honor societies.

She also is a Youth Equity Stewardship (YES!) series ambassador, promoting and supporting an inclusive and accepting learning environment for all students. Beyond the classroom, Palma is a member of Math Team, Science Olympiad, Scholastic Bowl, Student Council and Key Club. She also is a member of the Girls Cross-Coun-

try and Track teams. Palma has committed to join the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Women’s Cross-Country Team and Women’s Track & Field Team, where she will compete in mid-distance or distance events. She plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

About Maxwell Polanek Polanek’s speech was entitled “Warriors: A Tale of the Future.”

“When I look at the class of 2019, I see a group of people who are destined for countless locations, experiences and mindsets,” Polanek said before giving his speech. “I hope my speech encourages my peers to keep an open mind and to never accept things as they are, but really explore what things mean to them. I hope it helps them look at the rest of their lives productively.”

At the conclusion of his high school career, Polanek will have completed 12 AP courses, as well as a multitude of honors courses. As a result of his academic success, Polanek has been recognized as a Finalist in the 2019

National Merit Scholarship Program and as an AP Scholar with Distinction and has been named to the Distinction Honor Roll each semester of his high school career. He also earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36 (which is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school), was recognized with the Outstanding Freshman Award and is an inductee of Civitas (Willowbrook’s Social Studies Honor Society) and National Honor Society.

June 2 Police said that while officers investigated a traffic accident in the 1300 block of Foxdale at around 10:36 a.m., Juan Brito, 19, of Bartlett, was found and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license revoked and with insurance, and expired registration.

Brito also was found to have a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for speeding, and an uninsured motor vehicle, according to police.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a new, $40.1 billion state budget bill into law June 5, along with bills to fund a long-range capital improvements plan and a bill that would establish a new, multi-bracket income tax structure in Illinois, provided voters approve a constitutional amendment allowing it in the 2020 elections.

He also signed a bill that would establish a system of graduated income tax rates to take effect in 2021, provided that Illinois voters approve a constitutional amendment in November 2020 to allow such a tax system.

The budget bill, Senate Bill 262, adds about $1.14 billion in new spending during the fiscal year that begins July 1.

It passed the General Assembly over the weekend with broad bipartisan support, but it came about only after weeks of contentious negotiations between legislative Democrats and Republicans.

“Just a few years ago, simply passing a budget was considered nearly impossible. And for years before that, the budget included gimmicks and tricks, and was balanced in name only,” Pritzker said during a bill-signing ceremony at the Thompson Center in Chicago.

“Those days are over. That this budget is balanced and bipartisan demonstrates just how far we have come.”

Some of the highlights of the bud-

get, according to the governor’s office, include an $80 million increase in funding for the troubled Department of Children and Family Services to hire additional staff and to increase reimbursement rates paid to social service providers who work on contract with the agency.

It also includes $107 million in additional funding for the Department of Human Services to increase reimbursement rates for people and agencies that provide home and community-based services for the elderly and disabled.

K-12 and higher education will also see funding increases next year, with more than $378 million in new funding going to public schools and another $66.7 million in additional base funding for public universities and community colleges.

The budget plan also includes a full payment into the state’s pension systems. And it adds $410 million to the current fiscal year’s budget to cover costs associated with unpaid union contract obligations dating back to fiscal year 2016.

That new spending was made possible by passage of a revenue bill, Senate Bill 689, that levies a new tax on the private insurance companies that administer the state’s Medicaid program.

Money from that assessment will be used to draw down additional federal matching funds, thus freeing up about $530 million in state general revenues to be used for other purposes.

Willowbrook High School celebrates student filmmaker On May 16, Willowbrook students and staff came together after school to celebrate the work of student Maurice Brown (class of 2019).

Brown created an animated short film called “Derone Jones,” which was debuted on that day. For the past several semesters, Brown has worked tirelessly to complete the film and even came in during his resource time and lunch period to finish the animation.

“Maurice was trying to complete this project prior to our art show in April, but just missed it,” said Willowbrook Art Department Head John Epple. “Even then, he still kept coming in and got it done. I am very proud of his drive and commitment to this project! It represents many hours of animation, editing and learning for Maurice.”

During its April 29 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education named Addison Trail senior Wenyuan Zhang and Willowbrook senior Melissa Florey as the recipients of the David Koch/ Board of Education.

Since spring 1984, the David Koch/Board of Education Scholarship has been given in honor of former District 88 Superintendent Dr. David F. Koch Jr. Koch retired as superintendent in June 1983 and completed 35 years of service to the district. He also was the first principal of Addison Trail.

Addison Trail boys volleyball team announces postseason honors

Seven Blazers make conference allacademic team

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team got it done in the classroom as well as on the court this season.

The Blazers had seven players make the all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division academic team. That list included J.T. Daniels, Michael Tulke, Joe Mosny, Justin Werderitch, Gianfranco Patano, Rob Ruffolo and Nico Nasti.

Werderitch and Mosny were named to the all-WSC Gold team for

their play on the court. Mosny earned the team’s MVP honor and also made a local media all-area team. Daniels was the recipient of the team’s most improved award.

Addison Trail finished the season 12-25 overall and finished second in the WSC Gold Division with a 3-3 record. The Blazers opened the playoffs with a 21-25, 25-20, 25-14 win against Fenton in the regional quarterfinals and then lost to Bartlett 1825, 25-14, 25-16 in the semifinals.

Mosny led the team in kills with 250 and blocks with 67. Nasti recorded a team-high 633 assists, while Enzo Ciaccia had 134 digs to lead the Blazers. Michal Zdanowicz had a team-best 21 aces.

Coach Chad Grant felt his squad competed hard despite some adversity throughout the season. “I was impressed with our ability to remain competitive despite inexperience and injuries,” he said. “We gave ourselves a chance in almost all our matches.”

Grant said the Blazers took a major step forward on the offensive end as the season wore on. “We made a lot of strides on offense,” he said. “At the beginning of the year, we were a two-player offense. Late in the year we could spread the ball around a lot more.”

Daniels earned the most improved award in this first season on the team. “J.T. Daniels was in his first

year playing and he turned himself into a volleyball player,” said Grant.

“He was smart and disciplined as a blocker and was the heart and soul of our team.”

Grant also gave high marks to Giany Patano in the team’s two playoff games. “Giany also came up huge for us with his blocking in both playoff games,” the coach said. “He came a long way this year.”

Both Willowbrook track and field teams concluded their seasons at recent IHSA Class 3A sectional meets.

On the girls’ side, the Warriors competed in the Naperville North Class 3A sectional where senior Victoria Palma qualified for state in the 1,600 by taking eighth with a time of 5:06.30, which was under the state-qualifying cut.

Palma competed in the state meet and did not qualify for the final day of competition.

Also at Naperville North, Willowbrook took 11th in the 3,200 relay with a time of 11:21.82. The Warriors were 12th in the 400 relay with a time of 53.04.

Regina Brisbois was 24th with a time of 14:09.93. Samantha Williams was 21st with a time of 18.90 in the 100 hurdles.

Elizabeth Sanchez took 27th in the 100 with a time of 14.37. Michelle Villalobos was 20th in the 800 with a time of 2:31.28.

The Warriors were 12th in the 800 relay with a time of 1:57.41.

Jahne Jones finished 10th in the 400 with a time of 1:03.02. Daylee Braden was 13th with a time of 1:03.21.

Williams took 22nd in the 300 hurdles with a time of 55.43. Jones was

18th with a time of 28.16 in the 200 dash.

The Warriors placed 13th in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:30.84.

Miani Blackwell tied for seventh in the shot put with a throw of 340. Aniyah Rushing took 14th with a throw of 31-1. Nicole DelSanto was ninth in the discus with a throw of 102-3 while Blackwell was 12th at 95-11.

Olivia Sobieszczyk was 10th in the high jump at 4-9. Sanchez took 23rd in the long jump at 13-11 1/2.

Katherine Tortorici was 21st in the triple jump at 29-2.

Earlier, the Warriors competed in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet.

Jones was fifth in the 100 with a time of 13.09. Gillian Enriquez was fifth in the 100 JV race with a time of 14.51.

Jones took eighth in the 200 at 28.06. Lily Weder was sixth in the 200 JV at 29.95, while Sanchez was seventh at 30.68.

Braden was fourth in the conference in the 400 at 1:08.48, while Jones was fifth at 1:11.26. Weder was third in the 400 JV at 1:08.14.

Palma was the conference runner-up in the 80 at 2:22.11. Michelle Villalobos was sixth at 2:36.03.

Barrington took third in the 800 JV at 2:42.81.

Palma won the 1,600 conference title in 5:16.94. Paulina Minjares was fifth in the 1,600 JV at 6:29.91.

Gabriella Friguletto was fifth in the 3,200 JV at 14:14.17.

Williams took sixth in the 100 hurdles at 18.69. Daniella Irion was fifth in the JV 100 hurdles at 22.20.

Williams was fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 55.36. Irion was

sixth in the JV 300 hurdles at 1:05.50.

Willowbrook was fifth in the 400 relay at 53.95 with Grace Burns, Jones, Irion and Williams. The Warriors took third in the JV 400 relay at 56.65 with Elizabeth Bruschuk, Sanchez, Madlynn Hoffman and Gillian Enriquez.

The Warriors were sixth in the 800 relay at 2:02.26 with Morgan Bauers, Olivia Sobieszczyk, Fiona Murphy and Melissa Florey. The Warriors were fourth in the JV 800 relay at 2:05.34 with Irion, Avery Magierski, Enriquez and Madlynn Hoffman.

Willowbrook took fifth in the 1,600 relay with a time of 5:02.10 with Marisol Magana, Sobieszczyk, Murphy and Florey.

The Warriors were third in the JV 1,600 relay at 4:52.38 with Sanchez, Bruschuk, Enriquez and Mya Griesbaum.

Willowbrook won the 3,200 relay conference title in 10:00.30 with Palma, Villalobos, Martinez and Braden.

Blackwell won the shot put title with a 36-7 throw, while Rushing was second at 33-5. Jarelly Carrillo was second in the JV shot put at 307, while DelSanto was third at 30-4.

Elmhurst American Legion 17U team kicks off season Muddogs defeat Palos Heights

The Elmhurst American Legion 17U baseball team wasted no time getting started with its summer season.

The Muddogs got off to a 1-3-1 start through their first five games. The team is comprised of players from IC Catholic Prep, York, Fenton and Leyden high schools.

After a 9-7 loss to Urbana, the Muddogs dropped an 11-7 game to Ford County in a contest played at Carl Gruber Baseball Complex in Tilton, Illinois.

Post 187 led 2-0 after the first inning, but trailed 6-3 after three innings. The Muddogs had five hits in the game.

Leyden’s Aldo Flores Jr. went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Jack Ryan (IC Catholic Prep) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jake Galanis (Leyden) had a hit and an RBI. Julius Sanchez (Leyden) had a hit and a run scored.

Ryan had a double. Sanchez, Flores Jr. and Marcos Montoya (Fenton) each had two stolen bases.

IC Catholic Prep’s Andrew Zwolinski went the first five innings and struck out three.

Post 187 then dropped an 8-3 decision to Danville Gold in Tilton. Danville jumped out to a 4-2 lead after three and 6-2 advantage after four.

Flores Jr. had a hit and a run scored. Jose Perez (Fenton) had a hit and a run scored. Sanchez had a hit and an RBI to go with two walks.

Zwolinski had a hit and an RBI. Galanis had a hit and an RBI. Flroes Jr.’s hit was a double.

Ryan stole two bases.

Jack Klein (Fenton) pitched the first 5 1/3 innings and struck out two.

The Muddogs then recorded a 4-2 win over Palos Heights in the front end of a doubleheader at Stagg High School in Palos Hills.

Elmhurst won the game with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Muddogs had only three hits in the game. Flores Jr. had a hit, scored three runs and walked twice. Nick DeSimone (Fenton) had a hit, as did IC Catholic Prep’s Michael Hilgart who also drove in a run. Victor Hyso also drove in a run. Flores Jr. stole two bases.

Galanis went the first 6 2/3 innings and struck out four while scattering only five hits.

Kyle Mitchell (Fenton) pitched to the final batter of the game and struck him out to earn the save.

The nightcap of the twinbill went to a 5-5 draw with Palos Heights Post 1193. The game was stopped after eight innings.

Flores Jr. walked four times and scored two runs. DeSimone had an RBI, as did Perez. Hilgart had two hits and drew two walks. Zwolinski also had two hits. Abraham Otero (Fenton) had two hits and an RBI. Montoya scored two runs. The Muddogs walked 11 times in the game. Zwolinski had a double and Flores Jr. stole three bases.

Klein pitched six innings and struck out five. Montoya pitched two innings and had two strikeouts.

Post 187 19U Muddogs The Elmhurst Post 187 19U team kicked off its season with a 7-2 loss to Mt. Prospect Post 525 in a game played at Triton College in River Grove.

Mt. Prospect led 4-2 after the second inning and then scored three runs in the sixth.

York’s Ian Steinorth had two hits and a run scored. IC Catholic Prep’s Ryan Malek had a hit and an RBI. York’s Tim Bowbin also had a hit and an RBI. Steinorth tripled in the game.

Aidan Kress pitched three innings and had three strikeouts. Malek pitched two innings

Post 187 15U Muddogs The Muddogs’ 15U super junior American Legion team was off to a 1-5 start through their first six games. In recent action, Post 187 defeated Pirates Baseball Hampton 3-2 in a game played at. St. Xavier University in Chicago.

George O’Brien (IC Catholic Prep) had two hits, scored a run and walked. Oscar Torres (Fenton) had a hit and a run scored to go with a walk. Matthew Maziarka (Fenton) had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Jayden Ayala (IC Catholic Prep) had a hit and an RBI. Jace Klein (Leyden) had a hit and an RBI. Maziarka went the full seven innings and allowed six hits, no earned runs, while striking out four to pick up the win.

Post 187 lost 9-0 to Top Tier Silver at Oak Forest High School. Fernando Sanchez (Leyden) had the team’s only hit. Leo Cortez (Fenton) drew two walks. Maziarka pitched five innings and gave up two earned runs, while striking out four.

In an 8-2 loss to White Sox Elite at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, Elmhurst had four hits and committed five errors.

Torres had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Will Ryan had a hit, as did Cortez. Declan Kenneally (IC Catholic Prep) also had a hit.

O’Brien walked two times and stole two bases.

Ryan stole three bases.

O’Brien went the first five innings and struck out six.

Fenton girls track team enjoys recent successes Matuszewski wins 100 dash conference title

In addition to competing in the IHSA postseason, the Fenton girls track team also took part in the recent Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division championship held at Elmwood Park.

Senior Hanna Matuszewski won the 100 dash with a time of 12.70. Rebecca Millard was fourth at 13.41.

Freshman Ahtziri Cardenas was third in the JV 100 with a time of 3:57.54. Fernanda Olmos was fifth at 3:59.05.

Matuszewski was second in the 200 at 27.25.

Freshman Sophia Haska was seventh in the JV 200 with a time of 32.25.

Alexandra Gallegos finished seventh in the JV 400 with a time of 1:16.16.

Freshman Hailey Miller placed seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:41.60. Sophomore Guadalupe Honorato was eighth in the JV 800 at 3:03.07.

Ruth Kirkwood was 13th in the 1,600 with a time of 6:21.18, while Alyssa Silva was eighth in the JV 1,600 with a time of 6:51.63.

Honorato was eighth in the 3,200 with a time of 14:42.87. Cecilia Flores was fifth in the JV 3,200 at 15:13.35.

Junior Britania Aguilar was eighth in the 100 hurdles in 20.62. Jessica Anszczak was sixth in the JV 100 hurdles in 22.02, while teammate Abby Quinones was seventh at 22.05.

Nicolette Castillo was 11th in the 300 hurdles in 59.02. Anszczak was eighth in the JV 300 hurdles at 1:05.23. Aguilar was ninth at 1:06.81.

Fenton was the conference runner-up in the 400 relay in 53.12 with Analisa Murillo, Therese Clanton, Millard and Matuszewski.

Fenton was fifth in the JV 400 relay in 59.47 with Lylli Rodriguez, Cardenas, Emily

Trzmielewski and Haska.

The Bison finished second in the 800 relay in 1:55.67 with Murillo, Clanton, Millard and Matuszewski.

Fenton placed third in the JV 800 relay in 2:11.75 with Rodriguez, Cardenas, Fernanda Olmos and Haska.

The Bison also were second in the 1,600 relay in 4:26.04 with Murillo, Ally Durkowski, Mackenzie Miller and Hailey Miller.

Fenton took second in the JV 1,600 relay in 5:00.98 with Honorato, Kirkwood, Marilyn Medina and Naomi Ziehm.

Fenton was third in the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:52.49. That group included Kirkwood, Mackenzie Miller, Durkowski and Hailey Miller.

Fenton was fourth in the JV 3,200 relay in 12:23.56 with Carolina Rosas, Aixa Benitez, Angelika Gasior and Amy Czauderna.

Noella Vazquez took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 27-2. Margret Quilapio was ninth at 2310 1/2.

Girl Scout exhibit opens From June 19 through June 29, the Addison Center for the Arts presents Courageous & Strong: Girl Scouts’ Budding Artists. The public is invited on Friday, June 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to celebrate the creativity of the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

“Courageous & Strong: Girl Scouts’ Budding Artists” is an art exhibit featuring the art projects of many troops from the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. The ages of the artists range from girls that are Daisies in Kindergarten and 1st grade, Brownies who are in 2nd and 3rd grades, and Juniors who are in 4th and 5th grades.

The girls worked on projects throughout the year either in school or during Scout meetings/ gatherings and have a wide range of art pieces from painted rocks, to sculptures, sketches, paintings, and more. As members of Service Unit 537, the girls do so many things to give back to their communities all year long such as volunteer at

PADS, raise money and food for food pantries, create awareness for disabilities, make blankets for kids in pediatric hospitals, collect things to recycle and reuse, and much more to try and make this world a better place. This exhibit was organized to do something for the girls. This show is meant to celebrate just one of their many talents and is something they really enjoy.
