Village plans rededication ceremony at Cortesi Park Gathering takes place Memorial Day at 11 a.m.

VILLA PARK — It will be an extra special Memorial Day this coming weekend, when the community turns out to celebrate and rededicate Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park. The

ceremony will take place on Monday, May 30 at 11 a.m. at the park, located where Cortesi meets Kenilworth.

The festivities will begin with public and village officials, followed by a performance by the Willowbrook

High School Choir, an official ribbon-cutting, and a chance to pay tribute to veterans in the Villa Park community who have passed away.

Renovation improvements have just been completed at the park, which now has a new

central plaza featuring flag poles and memorial columns, honoring each branch of U.S. military service. There are also new benches, sidewalks, landscaping, sod, a watering system and a relocated drinking fountain. In addition, upgrades

and enhancements were made to the historic Train Depot, the place the Villa Park Historical Society calls home.

The park is named after longtime Villa Park resident Dr. L. R. Cortesi, who served during World War II.

EMH Foundation awards scholarships to local teens ELMHURST — The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation has awarded $22,000 in scholarships to 11 area high school students who volunteer at Elmhurst Hospital and plan to pursue careers in a health-related field.

Each recipient received $2,000 through the Foundation’s Teen Volunteer Health Profession Scholarship program.

Funds for this year’s scholarships were raised through the Foundation’s annual Reindeer Route House Walk.

“Our teens must meet a rigorous set of criteria to qualify for a scholarship,” said Susan Tyburski, executive director, EMH Foundation. “This includes scholastic achievement, minimum 160 hours of volunteer service in the hospital, strong performance evaluations from the Volunteer Department, community service and plans for a career in a health-related field.”

Frances A. Schweihs, nee Essig, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2016, in her Villa Park home surrounded by her family. She was 99 years of age. She is survived by her children John (Lorraine) Schweihs, Bill (the late Louise A.) Recreation Department announces coming events ‘Super Sensational’ Saturdays planned for families

Villa Park Recreation is offering a series of free family events at Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park, at Kenilworth and Cortesi, this summer called Super Sensational Saturday Mornings. They will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on June 11, July 16 and Aug. 13.

Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and the family for a funfilled Saturday morning. You’ll enjoy great family interactive entertainment, crafts, and face painting (additional fee).

Fishing workshop derby planned

The Parks and Recreation Department and the Villa Park Sportsmen’s club are holding a free fishing workshop and family fishing derby at North Terrace Pond on June 1 from 6-8 p.m.

Participants will learn how to maintain your reel, tie hooks and rigs, put on bobbers and what types of bait to use at the Fishing Derby scheduled for June 4 from 9 a.m. – 12 noon.

Bring the family, a picnic basket and fishing gear and enjoy a day of fishing.

The Derby will award prizes by age group to the largest, smallest and most fish caught. A casting contest will be held 9-9:45 a.m. Villa Park Sportsmen’s club members will be on hand to give fishing tips.

Conroy measure will bring justice for victims of sexual assault VILLA PARK – State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is continuing her efforts to help ensure justice for victims of sexual assault by co-sponsoring a measure that was recently approved by the legislature to implement oversight of the investigation process of sexual assault cases.

“Victims of sexual assault deserve to have the full extent of the law working to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice,” she said. “In work-

ing with victims, advocates, and law enforcement, I was outraged by the lack of checks and balances in the evidence gathering process and knew that we could do better for these victims of such heinous crimes.”

Conroy co-sponsored Senate Bill 2221, which would require the state police to notify the appropriate state’s attorney’s office and the investigating law enforcement agency of positive DNA matches on cases

of sexual assault submitted by local police departments. The Conroy-backed measure would implement needed checks and balances to help ensure that local departments follow through with these investigations. Additionally, the bill provides for transparency by having each law enforcement agency conduct an annual inventory of all sexual assault cases in their custody be submitted to the state’s attorney’s office.

“If there is a positive DNA match in sexual assault cases, that evidence deserves immediate follow-through so that perpetrators of violence cannot continue to threaten the safety of our communities,” Conroy said. “We have to ensure that every level of law enforcement has the tools necessary to prevent any further miscarriages of justice.”

ELMHURST — Husbandwife team Dave and Heather Pryor are collaborating in an exhibition of their collection of original and imaginative artwork in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 Cot-

tage Hill Ave., Elmhurst, from May 22 through July 1 during regular Museum hours. Both are members of the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild.

An opening reception, free and open to the public, is scheduled in the gallery, on Friday, May 27, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Entitled “Red Wagon,” the exhibit is an eclectic assortment of stylized realism and graphic design, with a range

in mediums including watercolor, acrylic, gouache, graphite, ink, digital and animation, according to the artists. T h e show contains themes from many of Dave and Heather’s influences, including comics, movies, cartoons, children’s books, games, and many animals, including bears and dogs.

business. He has worked in television animation (Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Hysteria!) and in gaming, developing art for several of his favorite movie licenses including “The Wizard of Oz” and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

Since 2012, Dave has exhibited in several pop culture group shows in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. His most recent exhibits include “30 Years Later” (a tribute to movies released in 1986), “Bob’s Burgers” (celebrating 100 episodes of the Fox animated series), and “Idiot Box” (a tribute to classic television). Awards he has received include a regional student academy award, Emmy nomination as an animation director on Animaniacs, several gaming design patents, and numerous game honors from gaming publications and global gaming expos.

Heather Jones-Pryor was born and raised in the western suburbs. She met her husband Dave while attending Columbia College, studying film and animation. Since then, she has worked professionally on animated video and television series, post-production for television advertising, and until 2008, visual effects for feature films. Now, she is active in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild, enjoys creating art in her home and working parttime at K&T Colors.

Heather and Dave reside in Elmhurst. They say that they spend most of their time painting, animating, going to movies, and playing with their dogs.

Elmhurst Symphony announces upcoming season Music of Beatles, Billy Joel, Elton John part of Oct. 1 opener

ELMHURST — The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra’s has announced plans for its 56th season: “Expect the Unexpected!”

Concert programs ranging from the Beatles and Elton John to Grieg and Brahms will please a variety of musical tastes and special events will be held throughout the season as well.

The ESO’s home at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church offers a spectacular contemporary space in which to enjoy these not-to-be-missed performances with family and friends.

The season opener on Oct. 1, 2016 at 7 p.m., “The Beatles and Friends,” features lavish orchestral arrangements of Beatles favorites and choral settings of music by the Beatles and Billy Joel, along with selections from Elton John’s The Lion King. November brings “Brass Blowout II,” showcasing music of Vaughan Williams, Verdi, Everson and Kalinnikov, with guest artist Gene Pokorny, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal tuba. In January, “1, 2, 3, 4 Baroque” offers glorious gems of the Baroque period

Addison May 20 Arturo Camillo Jr., 25, of Addison, was arrested in the 800 block of W. Fullerton at around 2:13 a.m. and charged with DUI and disobeying a stop sign.

May 18 • Anthony Aiardo, 60, of Addison, was arrested in the 900 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 3:40 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said Aiardo made a sexual comment to a male juvenile about a female juvenile who was approaching a school bus, which reportedly disturbed and alarmed the male juvenile.

• Guadalupe De La Cerda, 19, of Elgin, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of Rohlwing Road at around 2:38 p.m. Police said De La Cerda was observed in the self-checkout lane to only pay for one item and attempt to leave the store with items valued at $50.

• Adrian Gonzalez, 19, of Addison, was arrested near Diversey and School at around 7:50 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said Gonzalez was affiliated with persons involved in a battery incident.

• Robert Grant, 23, of Wood Dale, was arrested in the 300 block of W. Lake St. at around 10:39 p.m. and charged with possession of cannabis. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said an officer detected the scent of cannabis inside Grant’s vehicle. Cannabis also was located on Grant, as well as inside his vehicle, according to police.

• Michael Marks, 22, of Oak

Lawn, was arrested in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 8:50 p.m. Police said Marks was taken into custody on a warrant for retail theft that occurred on Oct. 22, 2015.

• Juan Roque, 28, of Addison, was arrested at around 10:59 p.m. Police said Roque was processed on a warrant out of Arlington Heights for driving while license suspended.

• Kimberly Walt, 48, of Addison, was arrested in the 400 block of Comstock at around 8:35 p.m. and charged with DUI. Police said Walt drove into a curb, hit a mailbox and continued onto the roadway to her residence.

May 17 A 48-year-old man from Addison was arrested in the 2000 block of Adobe Drive at around 11:54 p.m. and charged with domestic battery and obstructing identification.

May 15 • Kimberly Bullaro, 48, of Medinah, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 4:36 p.m. and charged with retail theft. Police said Bullaro paid for some items and concealed others with the intent to deprive the merchant of the merchandise’s value.

• Diana Macedo, 18, of Addison, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 2:36 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• Enrique Romo-Lopez, 20, of Addison, was arrested in the 500 block of W. Lake St. at around 8:08 p.m. Police said Romo-Lopez was taken into custody on an original warrant/ unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

May 13 • Jose Huerta, 43, of Addison, was arrested in the 200 block of Lake Park at around 10:19 p.m. and charged with two counts of battery. Police said Huerta kicked one victim and pushed another victim, causing him to fall.

WBHS names Garner as April’s recipient of 88’s Best VILLA PARK — Bridget Garner has been named as Willowbrook’s April recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her academic accomplishments. Garner, a senior, was recognized during the May 9 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

As a student, Garner has enrolled in the most rigorous courses available at Willowbrook, including completing seven Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and a multitude of honors courses.

She has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, an Illinois State Scholar and has earned Honor Roll status each semester of her high school career. She also is Secretary of the National English Honor Society and is an inductee of the National Honor Society, Civitas (Willowbrook’s Social Studies Honor Society), the Math Honor Society and the World Language Honor Society.

Beyond the classroom, Garner has been recognized with the Human Relations Award and the Outstanding Freshman Award. She also is a member of Key Club, Varsity Athletic Club, Blue Crew and serves as a New Beginnings Leader, assisting new Warriors in the transition to high school.

Her commitment to Willowbrook is further demonstrated by her participation as a four-year member of the Varsity girls tennis, basketball and soccer teams and as a representative at the West Suburban Conference Leadership Conference. She is captain of the tennis team and has

received Academic All-Conference recognition for basketball.

Garner regularly volunteers at the LombardVilla Park Food Pantry, as a Freshmen Progress Program mentor, packing meals for Feed My Starving Children and bell-ringing for the Salvation Army.

“Garner exudes confidence and poise,” said English teacher Tara Murphy. “She is kind and giving, spunky and fun. She is a person to look up to and a person to lean on. Garner is simply a wonderful person. She lights up any and every room she enters and does so without ego. She is an athlete, a friend, a volunteer and a student – and I am proud to have known her. She is honestly, without cliché, one of a kind.”

World language teacher Peg Browne agreed.

“Not only is Garner smart, but she is fun and funny,” she said. “She says hello every day with a smile. She works so hard in school and in her sports. She is a team player and a true Warrior.”

Birds provide backyard concerto every morning

T

he birds were going crazy with their twittering tweets, chirps, and trills. The cooing of a mourning dove underscored the drumming of a lone woodpecker. It seemed each feathered friend was trying to outdo the other with its own solo and the sounds reverberated in a rowdy, crescendo backyard symphony.

This spirited banter jostled the airwaves amply enough to wake me from a sound sleep.

I looked at the clock. It was 4:23 a.m. I know what they say about the early bird, but 4:23 a.m. is a little too wee for me.

Even roosters know enough to wait until dawn to awaken the farm.

Still the fervor and celebratory chattering of the birds in my yard at 4 a.m., each morning is impressive – albeit

not fully appreciated by most humans living in my house.

The birds are celebrating the weather and anticipating the sunrise and the business of preening their feathers, and splashing in the birdbath, and padding their nests, and laying and hatching their eggs, and hunting for worms, and feeding their babies, and giving flight lessons, and dive bombing the cats, and eagerly welcoming all the other everyday tasks at hand (or wing, as their case may be).

They are embracing their

essence in a giddy bird fashion and it’s infectious. I want to be like them!

I’m not saying I want to be a bird. I couldn’t be. I can’t fly. I don’t even have wings.

But the joy, the ultimate true joy they express at the normal elements in their lives (at 4 a.m.) is notable to the sleepiest of the sleepiest.

The tweeters in my common, ho-hum backyard are birds; average, ordinary, suburban birds. They’ve been birds their entire life. They could very well choose to take flying, singing, and sunrises for granted.

But they don’t. Instead they fill the air with their predawn concert each morning, because they can.

They are birds and that’s what birds do. (Well, that and poop on cars.)

Even though I’m still try-

ing to finish a good dream in those wee, pre-daybreak hours, I leave the windows open so I can hear them each (early, early) morning because sleep is one thing and exuberance with the business of life is another.

Imagine experiencing authentic joy at the promise of each new day. Of being so in love with the sunrise that you feel compelled to sing about it at the loudest decibel level in your range. Of flying across the country on your own feather power because nature tells you that’s the way it should be.

Birdbrain is not typically interpreted as a positive descriptor, but I think maybe that should change. While birds may or may not be the brightest bulbs in the backyard, they’ve got some things figured out, such as loving life – anytime of the day, but espe-

cially at 4 a.m.

President approves Department of Labor overtime changes ELMHURST — According to a release issued by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI), despite opposition from the United States Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Businesses and the ECCI, President Barack Obama last week approved the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) overtime regulation updates, effective December 1, 2016.

The DOL’s Final Rule focuses primarily on updating the salary and compensation needed for Executive, Administrative and Professional workers to be exempt from overtime pay.

According to the DOL, key provisions of the Final Rule are as follows: Sets the standard salary level at the 40th percentile of earnings of full-time salaried work-

ers in the lowest-wage Census Region, currently the South ($913 per week; $47,476 annually for a full-year worker); Sets the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (HCE) subject to a minimal duties test to the annual equivalent of the 90th percentile of full-time salaried workers nationally ($134,004); and Establishes a mechanism for

automatically updating the salary and compensation levels every three years to maintain the levels at the above percentiles and to ensure that they continue to provide useful and effective tests for exemption.

Additionally, the Final Rule amends the salary basis test to allow employers to use nondiscretionary bonuses and incentive payments (including commissions) to satisfy up to 10

percent of the new standard salary level.

Business organizations believe that the DOL’s Final Rule will adversely affect small businesses and not-forprofit organizations.

Businesses are expected to shift some employees from salaried to downward-adjusted hourly pay to offset the additional time worked beyond 40 hours.

Conroy helps pass funding for human service providers SPRINGFIELD — Last week, bipartisan legislation supported by state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, to partially fund social service providers passed the General Assembly and now awaits the governor’s signature.

“This bill is long overdue and while it is far from the

long-term solution that our state needs, it is a step in the right direction,” Conroy said.

“I look forward to bipartisan cooperation as we continue our work to pass a responsible state budget.”

Senate Bill 2038 appropriates approximately $720 million from state funds dedicated

to human services-related services, including the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association, which provides a variety of recreational and social programs for people with disabilities.

The bill prohibits state agencies from diverting funds from the intended use for internal or

bureaucratic purposes except where specifically authorized.

The bill will be sent to the governor for approval.

“Organizations such as the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association and the services they provide are far too valuable to neglect,” Conroy said. “Although this would

help stop the bleeding of many of our valuable social service agencies, the funding in this bill is a quick fix and must be followed by a complete budget that is both balanced and able to provide essential services for the most vulnerable in our community and across the state.”

HUD announces $630,000 settlement for Illinois housing discrimination Allegations say owners, managers mistreated applicants with disabilities

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced last week that it has reached a $630,000 agreement with a group of Illinois property owners and a management company resolving allegations they violated the Fair Housing Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 by using rental screening policies that prevented applicants with

mental disabilities from living in a supportive living complex the group owned.

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale or rental of a dwelling on the basis of disability. In addition, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability by any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

The case came to HUD’s attention after several individuals with mental disabilities filed complaints alleging they were denied residency at the property managed by Eden Management, LLC, due to their disabilities. The individuals filed their complaints with the assistance of HOPE Fair Housing Center, a HUD Fair Housing Initiatives Program agency in DuPage County. HOPE con-

ducted three tests at Eden and also filed a complaint with the Department.

Under the terms of the Conciliation and Voluntary Compliance Agreement, Eden will pay Complainants $630,000, which includes relief and attorneys’ fees and costs. The agreement further requires Eden to make significant policy changes, including revising its employee manual and handbook, its poli-

cies and training.

Eden will also provide a letter to its top three referral sources encouraging individuals to apply regardless of mental disability.

In FY 2015, disability was the most common basis of complaints filed with HUD and its partner agencies, being cited as a basis for 4,548 complaints, or nearly 55 percent of the overall total.

Addison Trail boys track team qualifies two for state meet Conrad wins 200, Carr-Jones second in high hurdles

The Addison Trail boys track team finished eighth at the recent competitive Class 3A Wheaton-Warrenville South sectional.

The Blazers were one of eight teams in the field to score 30 or more team points.

Addison Trail qualified a pair of individuals for this weekend’s Class 3A state finals meet in Charleston.

Junior Darrion Conrad won the 200 sectional title with a time of 22.27, while teammate

Jordyn Carr-Jones was second in the 110 high hurdles and earned a state berth. Carr-Jones finished in 14.97. A Glenbard North runner won the sectional title at 14.75.

Conrad also was third in the 100 with a time of 11.16.

Sophomore Marco Flores was fourth in the 800 with a time of 1:58.52.

The Blazers were third in the 800 relay with a time of 1:30.06. Carr-Jones was seventh in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.54. Chris Purdy placed eighth in the long jump at 21-10.

In earlier action, the Blazers competed in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet. Addison Trail took third in the conference.

Carr-Jones won conference

titles in the 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles, while Conrad won the conference title in the 200.

Additional Addison Trail all-conference athletes included Ryan Baig (400 dash and 1,600 relay), Jonathon Cabrera (1,600 relay), Conrad (800 relay), Carr-Jones (1,600 relay and 800 relay), Stefano Favuzzi (800 relay), Marco Flores (1,600 relay), Alfredo Gonzalez (300 hurdles), Chris Griffith (800 relay), Purdy (long jump, 800 relay) and Michael Renc (discus).

Carr-Jones won the 300 hurdles in a time of 42.79. Gonzalez was fifth at 44.87. Addison Trail was fourth in the 3,200 relay at 8:45.91.

Addison Trail was second in the 1,600 relay at 3:29.55.

Willowbrook boys volleyball teams wins two matches at invitational

The Willowbrook boys volleyball team headed into this week’s Downers Grove South regional with a 14-win regular-season effort.

The Warriors finished West Suburban Conference Gold Division action with a 3-3 record and took third place.

In recent action, Willowbrook went 2-1 in pool play at its own Warrior invitational. The Warriors scored wins against Wheaton North and Glenbard East.

Also, Willowbrook lost 25-17, 19-25, 25-14 to Hinsdale Central in a WSC crossover match and dropped a 25-20, 25-21 WSC Gold match to District 88 neighbor Addison Trail.

Willowbrook has been playing without Ian Walsh, who sustained an ankle injury against Glenbard East in the Warrior invitational and did not play the remainder of the tournament or in the matches against Hinsdale Central and Addison Trail.

Willowbrook coach Ryan Bazon said Walsh was due to return earlier this week for the playoffs.

The 6-6 Walsh, who will play at Loras College next season, had 109 kills and was hitting .378 through late

last week. He also had a team-best 91 blocks.

“With Ian we were starting to put a lot of pressure on other teams at the net,” said Bazon. “Our blocking game was improving, which greatly helped our defense and led to better attacking opportunities.”

Bazon said one recent change that helped the squad was moving setter Lucas Betts, a senior, to outside hitter. “This has helped our hitting efficiency and middle-back defense,” Bazon noted. “Moving Lucas to outside hitter allowed us to pull up sophomore Nick Cookingham to set for the varsity team. He adds good consistency to our offense and gives us some good young talent moving forward with the program.”

Statistically, Ivan Tassev was leading the team in kills with 151.

Brendan Waldorf had 110 kills.

Tassev also was tops on the team with 29 aces. Andy Shreckengost was the team leader in blocks with 80. Calvin Linnig had 258 assists, while Cookingham had 178. Jack Maksymac was tops on the team through late last week in digs with 181.

The Warriors opened regional play earlier this week against Metea Valley.

Renc was fifth in the discus at 122-3. He’s only a sophomore.

Carr-Jones won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.81.

Purdy was second in the long jump at 22-5. Conrad was third in the 100 at 11.12. Demetrio Cervantes placed sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:58.99.

Purdy tied for fifth in the high jump at 5-8. Addison Trail was second in the 800 relay at 1:32.42. Baig was third in the 400 at 51.94.

Conrad won the 200 title with a time of 22.58.

Addison Trail was fourth at the frosh-soph level with 89 points.

Notable frosh-soph finishes included Alvaro Garza placing fourth in the 100 at 12.20.

Kevin Marroquin was fifth at 12.24.

Addison Trail was second in the 1,600 relay at 3:44.47. Randall Petrbok was third in the shot put with a throw of 38-3.

Ryan Sheehen was second in the discus with a throw of 1087. Albert White was third in the high jump with a mark of 5-4. Daniel Bueno was fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:01.75. David Reyes was fifth at 11:09.46.

Austin Rohlf was third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.71.

Alvaro Garza was second in the 400 with a time of 53.96.

James Carr won the 110 high hurdles in 18.36 and Rohlf was fifth at 19.82.

Baig, Favuzzi and Anthony Menolascino earned West Suburban Conference Gold Division all-academic honors.

The Fenton boys track team was in recent action at the Class 3A Wheaton-Warrenville South sectional.

Fenton placed 14th in the 400 relay with a time of 48.79. Antonio Aguilera was 14th in the 3,200 with a time of 10:47.89.

Kenta Jones was 20th in the 100 with a time of 11.90. Jose VazquezPerez was 12th in the 800 with a time of 2:02.98. Sophomore Michael Lieggi was 16th with a time of 2:04.26.

Fenton took 10th in the 800 relay with a time of 1:40.63. Jeremy Falconer was 16th in the 400 with a time of 53.67.

Samuel Hernandez was 12th in the 1,600 with a time of 4:42.61.

Joshua Jakalski was 20th in the discus with a throw of 109-06. He also took 18th in the shot put with a toss of 40-7 1/2.

Fenton girls soccer The Fenton girls soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to Chicago Latin School in the championship

game of the Class 3A Fenton regional.

Fenton reached the regional final after scoring a 2-1 win over Ridgewood in the semifinals.

Fenton baseball The Fenton baseball team opened play in the Class 4A Chicago Lane Tech regional earlier this week in quarterfinal action against Chicago Lincoln Park.

If Fenton won that game it played No. 1 sectional seed Oak Park-River Forest Wednesday at Kerry Wood Field.

Fenton is the No. 16 sectional seed.

Lincoln Park is the No. 17 seed.

Fenton softball The Fenton softball team is hosting a Class 4A regional this week at Redmond Park in Bensenville.

Fenton opened play Monday in a quarterfinal game against Proviso East.

If Fenton won that game it played Tuesday against No. 4 sectional seed Niles North.

Fenton is the No. 16 seed in the sectional. Proviso East is the No. 20 seed.

Fenton’s Souvannasy throws no-hitter Bison softball team hosting regional this week

The Fenton softball team went 3-1 during a recent-four game stretch.

The Bison swept a nonconference doubleheader from Amundsen by scored of 16-0 and 11-0.

In the second game, Fenton’s Jocelyn Souvannasy threw her second career no-hitter. Junior Taylor Spizzirri went the distance to earn the win in the

opener.

Fenton also dropped a 14-0 Metro Suburban Conference West Division game to Glenbard South, but bounced back to score a 7-5 MSC West win over Wheaton Academy.

Against Wheaton Academy, Fenton trailed 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but scored two runs in that frame and then four more runs in the sixth inning. Spizzirri was the winning pitcher.

The doubleheader against Amundsen also was Fenton’s senior night. “It was a special night as we honored six seniors who have provided us with 22 seasons of varsity softball,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello.

Souvannasy (University of Missouri), Ellie Gonzales (Ohio State), Clarissa Guevara (Tennessee), Alex Stoklosa (College of DuPage), Courtney Susmarski (Western Illinois) and Diana Pikul (Arizona State) all were honored.

“Those six seniors will be greatly missed,” said Mello.

“They have given so much to our program.”

Through 29 games, Pikul was leading the team with a .407 batting average and also was tops in on-base percentage at .492. Jenna Geraci was leading the team in hits with 28 and RBI with 25. Ellie Wassmann was the team leader in runs scored with 26 and stolen bases

with 30.

Spizzirri had four pitching wins and 30 strikeouts, while Susmarski was tops in fielding with a .973 fielding percentage.

“Taylor has really been on quite a roll lately,” said Mello.

Mello noted Spizzirri was particularly impressive in a tough-luck loss to IC Catholic Prep where she went seven innings and threw 51 of 67 pitches for strikes.

“It was one of the most efficient pitching performances we have had in the last decade,” said Mello.

Isa Lozada and Gonzales also have been key cogs of late for the Bison. “We made the switch putting Isa (a fresh-

man) at shortstop and moving Ellie back to second where she played as a freshman and sophomore. Both have really been working great together and have really helped solidify our infield defense. Ellie has been a great mentor for Isa. Both have really stepped up lately.”

Fenton opened postseason play earlier this week at home against Proviso East. If Fenton won that game it was scheduled to play Niles West on Tuesday. This is Fenton’s first year in Class 4A classification in softball.

“We are really playing much better of late,” said Mello.

In a 14-0 five-inning win over Proviso West, Willowbrook scored five runs in the first inning and seven more in the third inning.

Ferguson was 1-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBI. Olson had two hits. Pizur had two RBI. Garbacz and Reitz each had a hit and two RBI. Ben Espinoza had two stolen bases.

Reitz pitched a five-inning complete game to earn the win. He allowed three hits and struck out five.

In a 12-2 non-conference win against Glenbrook South on family day at Willowbrook, the Warriors scored six runs in the sixth inning and had 11 total hits.

Geritano had a double, scored three runs and stole four bases.

Martyniuk had a double and an RBI. Ranieri had two hits and two RBI. Zunkel had a hit and an RBI, while Molitor had a hit, scored two runs and drove

in two runs. Trevor Jalosynski had a triple and an RBI. Garbacz had two hits (including a double) and three RBI. Zunkel was the winning pitcher. He threw four innings and struck out seven. Garbacz threw the final two innings and struck out three.

Willowbrook won the second game against Glenbrook South by a 7-0 count. Willowbrook

scored seven runs in the third inning.

Espinoza went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mike Dembowski had a hit and an RBI. Michaelson had a hit and an RBI, as did Dylan Worden. Willowbrook stole six bases in the game.

Will Hines picked up the win. He struck out two in two innings of work. Scott Kohrt pitched the final two innings

and struck out four.

Addison Trail’s Kroll logs two top 10 state track finishes Willowbrook baseball team defeats Downers Grove South

Addison Trail junior Lauren Kroll capped off her track and field season in fine fashion.

Kroll earned a pair of top 10 finishes in the 100 and 200 at the recent Class 3A girls track and field state finals at Eastern Illinois University.

Kroll finished seventh in the state in the 200 with a time of 24.99. Kroll qualified for the state finals by taking second in her preliminary heat with a time of 25.41.

Kroll also took ninth in the state in the 100 dash with a time of 12.43. Kroll made the finals after running 12.51 and finishing third in her preliminary heat.

Kroll is only the second girls track athlete in school history to finish in the top nine at state in two events in the same year. Sharon Rodenhauser did it twice in the early 1980s in the shot put and discus.

Willowbrook baseball The Willowbrook baseball team recorded a recent 3-2 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory in eight innings against Downers Grove South.

Matt Garbacz was the winning pitcher. He threw a threehit, eight-inning complete game and struck out eight. He threw 67 of 105 pitches for strikes.

Addison Trail boys volleyball team finishes second in conference

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team’s late-season turnaround continued with a pair of recent wins.

The Blazers defeated District 88 neighbor Willowbrook 25-20, 25-21 to finish West Suburban Conference Gold Division play in second place at 4-2.

Jacob Grygo led the Blazers with 15 assists, 10 digs, six kills and one ace. Colton Noel had seven kills and three blocks. Kannon Nelms had six kills and three blocks, while

Arlind Rojba had 10 digs and four assists. Michael Chiaramonte had six digs and two aces.

The win moved Addison Trail to 16-19 overall.

Earlier, the Blazers were 25-16, 25-18 winners against Oak Park-River Forest in WSC crossover play.

Grygo had 21 assists, five kills and four digs. Nelms had 11 kills, one ace and four digs. Eric Lynch had four kills, while Michael Pudlo had three kills. Rojba had seven digs and three assists.

Addison Trail has been bolstered of late by the return of

Alex Murillo. “Alex entered the lineup after battling an ankle injury for most of the season,” said Addison Trail coach Chad Grant. “He has made us a stronger blocking team and has given us another big presence offensively.”

Addison Trail is 9-2 since Murillo has been in the starting lineup.

Grygo and Nelms also were cited for their work against Willowbrook and Oak ParkRiver Forest.

“Kannon and Jacob have played great recently,” said Grant.

Grant also likes the progress

his team has made at the service line. “Our team has come a long way at the service line,” he said. “We are serving tougher and don’t make as many errors. We also are spreading the ball around on offense better than we have all year.”

Grant likes the team’s makeup on the offensive end. “We have a lot of balance, size and firepower,” he said. “We are a tough team to block, but we need to do a better job of limiting our errors.”

Grant said defense will become even more magnified in the playoffs. “Defense is the weakest part of our game

right now,” he said. “We have to extend plays to have success in the postseason.”

Addison Trail opened postseason play earlier this week against Niles Notre Dame at the Maine East regional.

“I like the measurable improvement,” Grant said of his team’s recent upturn. “We started the season 5-16 and lost a bunch of close games. Closing our regular season going 11-3 with a very young team is exactly what you want to see.

I’m excited for both the present and the future. If we play our best, we will be a tough out.”

Fenton boys volleyball team downs St. Joseph Bison played Niles North earlier this week in regional action

The Fenton boys volleyball team wrapped up regular-season play with a recent threematch stretch.

The Bison defeated St. Joe’s 25-13, 25-22 and lost to Morton (25-17, 25-21) and Riverside-Brookfield (25-13, 25-23).

Fenton finished the regular season with eight wins.

Fenton continues to be led by the likes of Javy Sanchez, Andrew Hill and Freddie Bajo.

“Javy is our outside hitter and has been doing an amazing job hitting,” said Fenton coach Heather Petersen. “He is able to hit all over the court with power. Andrew is our setter and has been very consistent and has been making great offensive plays at the net. Freddie has been stepping it up as a huge blocker for us.”

Through late last week Sanchez was the team leader in kills, with Hill ranked second.

Bajo was tops in blocks, while Sanchez was leading the team in aces.

Petersen said passing has taken a step forward of late.

“Our passing has definitely improved,” she said. “Our defense is doing a lot better.

Our improved passing allows us to set up our offense and give the other team less free balls.”

Petersen also is seeing advancements from the service line. “Our serving has greatly improved,” she said. “We struggled in the beginning of the year with serving consistency. The boys are confident and can place the ball very well.”

The coach said her team’s improved mental game has paid dividends as well. “Our mental game has gotten significantly better,” she said. “We have made some great comebacks, but have fallen just short of a win. The boys have been able to make plays to end rallies. They are able to communicate with each other to put the ball away.

Fenton opened play in the Maine West regional earlier this week against Niles North.

“The boys are not only great volleyball players, but great kids,” said Petersen. “They have made the season very enjoyable and competitive.”

She finished the race in 12.43 seconds to take ninth. Later in the meet, the Trail Blazer sprinter finished the 200-meter dash in :24.99 to take seventh.
