Bail set at $4 million for 20-year-old man arrested

On Tuesday, May 9, the Independent learned that Jorge Vargas, 20, had been charged in connection with a shooting that took place in Addison on Saturday, May 6 and that a judge had set Vargas’ bail at $4 million.

The suspect, 20-year-old Jorge Vargas of Villa Park, was charged with what law enforcement officials are referring to as a “targeted” shooting that resulted in the deaths of two men and an attempt at the life of a third.

Vargas had been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

According to a report from DuPage County, Addison resident Kevin Bustos, 17, Villa Park resident Alberto Rios, 20, and a third person had parked outside an apartment building on Elizabeth Drive in Addison with the intent of visiting Rios’ children. Vargas reportedly fired eight rounds with a handgun from a third-story window of Rios’ ex-girlfriend’s apartment, where she lived with Rios’ two children.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin’s office reported that Bustos apparently tried to drive

away but crashed his vehicle into a tree. When officials arrived, Bustos and Rios were inside the vehicle both unresponsive with gunshot wounds.

Both were pronounced dead at area hospitals where they were taken.

Authorities have not yet named the third man, who reportedly told police he ran away when the gunfire started. He also told police that Rios fired one shot back at Vargas.

Vargas was taken into custody on Sunday evening after police tracked him to Fairmont City, just outside East St. Louis, where he was reportedly staying with relatives.

Officials brought Vargas back to DuPage County; on Monday, he gave a videotaped confession.

The relatives told police Vargas had arrived unexpectedly at their residence. Vargas told his relatives he was planning to leave for Mexico on Monday morning, in fact, he had already purchased a bus ticket under a false name.

Vargas’ next court appearance is scheduled for May 22 in front of Judge George Bakalis. If convicted on both counts, Vargas faces a mandatory sentence of natural life in prison.

On May 5, District 88 was honored with two Distinguished Service Awards (DSA) from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA).

VFW Post 2801 gearing up for Fourth of July Parade Villa Park VFW Post 2801 is once again hosting Villa Park’s Annual Fourth of July Parade on Tuesday, July 4 starting at 12 noon, with the theme “POW / MIAs - Never Forgotten.”

The parade route for this year starts at Trinity Lutheran Church, proceeds west down Central to Harvard, south on Harvard to Madison, east on Madison to Summit, north on Summit to Park, then west on Park to Ardmore.

It will disperse north on Ardmore.

There will be a beer tent set up near the Gazebo on Park Avenue between Ardmore and Yale with free hot dogs and soft drinks for parade

participants.

May 7 • Police said Pablo Landa-Carillo, 25, of Addison, had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for DUI. • John A. Portillo, 19 (residence not given), was charged with criminal trespass to property in the 300 block of W. Army Trail at around 3:43 a.m.

Inspired by DuPage County’s diverging elective body, Senate Bill 1592 aims to eliminate the current DuPage Election Commission and replace it with one that falls under

It’s something we all have in common. Mothers have touched our lives. Each of us came into the world courtesy of a mother. But the concept doesn’t stop there. Mothers are everywhere. They live next door or across the country. They are teachers, coaches, counselors, protectors, enforcers, disciplinarians and friends.

They are unconditional.

They come from all walks of life to influence others. And, whether the mother in your life is the woman who gave birth to you, raised you or lived down the street and had a motherly impact, chances are somewhere along the way someone

touched your heart in a motherly fashion.

Likewise, it’s likely you’ve served the role in the life of at least one human being or perhaps a four-legged friend. You don’t have to give birth to be a mother in someone’s eyes.

Mothers are born through various circumstances.

While no two mothers are the same, there are some common threads that accompany the job title: M-O-T-H-E-R. M – A mother is a mentor and a motivator. She is your number one fan no matter what the score of the game. She is on your side, even when you are confused about which side you are actually on.

O – I’ve always said taking on the task of motherhood is an infinite act of optimism. A mother places her bet on a life outside her own, doubles down and then goes all in. She has no choice. Unconditional love

requires such commitment and sacrifice.

T – Often, mothers are tenderhearted, tranquil and thoughtfully nurturing. But, under that façade is a toughness that has the capability to eat nails for breakfast. The softest mother can become a surly and keenly focused adversary should her child be threatened in some way.

This same bold fortitude also appears when a child messes up and requires a dose of a mother’s tough love, which is often just as tough on the mother as it is the child.

H – Motherhood can be a battle of the head and heart. Sometimes a mother is forced to listen to the log-

ic coming from her head when her heart is screaming for her to do just the opposite. In a second scenario, the heart rules and love trumps logic. The tricky part of motherhood is knowing one from the other.

E – Mothers are embarrassing, especially to a 13-year-old, especially in public. They can be exasperating, especially when they won’t let you stay out late or demand that you take one more bite of your broccoli. They are entirely overbearing and exceedingly oppressive and essentially erroneous in their belief that they know more than you do. They also

Conroy serves as ‘Principal for a Day’ at North Elementary

In honor of teacher appreciation week, State Rep. Deb Conroy D-Villa Park, became a North Elementary School Penguin on Monday, serving as “Principal for a Day” at the Villa Park Elementary School.

“I was honored to be a North Elementary Penguin for a day,” Conroy said. “Opportunities like this allow elected officials to see all the innovative work and dedication required of our local educators. I want to thank Principal Leinweber and the amazing faculty and staff for their hospitality and their ongoing dedication to our community’s students.”

The Principal for a Day program provides opportunities for principals and administrators to build strong relationships with lawmakers. It also gives students a chance to learn about the roles their local officials play in the community and how they can become more civically engaged.

District 88 welcomes new Board members During the May 1 District 88 Board of Education meeting, the following four individuals were officially sworn in as members of the Board and took the Oath of Office after being elected on April 4.

Donna Craft Cain (unexpired two-year term) Craft Cain has served on the

Board since 2004 and has been President since 2011. She also served as Secretary from 2009 to 2011. She graduated from Willowbrook in 1981, and her children attended District 88 as well.

Thomas Edmier (full, four-year term) Edmier has served on the Board

since 2009. He graduated from Addison Trail, as did his wife and children (one is currently a student).

Jay Irvin (full, four-year term) Irvin has served on the Board since 2005 and has been Vice President since 2009. He is a lifelong resident of District 88 and is an alumnus of the district. His wife,

children, brother, sister and nieces graduated from District 88 as well.

Blanca Jessen (full, four-year term) Jessen was appointed to the Board in 2015 to fill an open term.

Jessen’s husband, Dennis, graduated from Willowbrook in 1986, and their two children attend Willow-

brook.

Valerie Day Day was previously vice president for advancement at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tenn., where she developed a $60 million comprehensive campaign to fund the university’s strategic plan.

Day said Elmhurst College made a strong impression on her from the moment she set foot on campus.

“I know we will do amazing things to fund programs, scholarships and other initiatives,” she said. “There’s an electricity here, a wealth of new ideas, and all that is just very exciting for me.”

With over 800 acts playing on 11 stages, you’ll find alternative, rock, country, R&B, pop, reggae headliners and more, from national headliners to indie artists. The 23,000-seat Marcus Amphitheater hosts some of the biggest tours in music.

As if more music than any one person can listen to wasn’t enough, that’s not all Summerfest has to offer. A variety of the area’s restaurants are on-site offering tasty treats to keep you fueled up and ready to rock, and you can shop for everything from music-themed jewelry to puppets at unique vendors at four shopping marketplaces. The Northwestern Mutual Children’s Theater & PlayZone will keep kids enraptured all day, with performances by magicians, jugglers, dance groups, puppets and more.

Three Addison Trail girls badminton players compete at state Trio caps off successful season

The Addison Trail girls badminton team had three players compete in this past weekend’s IHSA state badminton finals in Charleston.

In the singles division, Mary Grace Mutia won two matches at state. She won her first-round match over a player from Hersey and then lost to Naperville North in the second round. Mutia then beat a player from York in the second round of the consolation tournament before losing to Glenbrook North in the third round.

The Addison Trail doubles team of Athena Kakolires and Kasia Czepiel went 1-2 in the doubles tournament. They lost their first match to Neuqua Valley but came back to beat a Downers Grove South team in straight sets in the first round of the consolation bracket. Kakolires and Czepiel were eliminated after a loss to Hinsdale South in the second round of the back draw.

Earlier, Mutia earned the No. 4 seed in the sectional tournament. She beat Schaumburg’s No. 1 player in the first round, but lost to Fremd’s top singles player.

In the back draw, Mutia again faced the same Schaumburg player and won again. Mutia then lost to a player from Elgin in the third- and fourth-place match. Mutia clinched a state spot in her previous match

Kakolires and Czepiel played Schaumburg’s No. 1 team in their first sectional match and won and then dropped a match to Fremd’s top team. Like Mutia, they faced the same Schaumburg team in the back

draw and won before beating Schaumburg’s No. 2 team for third place, thus earning them a spot in the state tournament.

The last time Addison Trail qualified players for state was two years ago when Izy Kantor and Alyssa

Lombardo made it. Prior to that it was 15 years ago.

“I was very proud of the whole team,” said Addison Trail coach Eric Norberg of the sectional meet. “You could hear the girls who lost matches earlier cheering for their teammates.

This was my third state qualifier in singles, but my first doubles team. I spent a lot of time learning the doubles game so I could help them out.

Willowbrook baseball team scores four more wins Streak moves Warriors to 22-6 overall

The Willowbrook baseball team continued its domination with four more wins. The victories move the Warriors to 22-6 overall and 13-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Willowbrook swept a WSC Gold series from Proviso East. In an 11-2 win in Maywood to open the series, the Warriors scored eight runs in the first inning.

Ben Espinoza was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. JT Ceh went 1-for-2 with a walk. Jon Kelso was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. MJ Ranieri went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Alex Michaelson scored a run and walked twice, while Sam Pelsor had a hit and a run scored. Kyle Fergu-

son went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Mike Dembowski went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jack Hines went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Ryan Mintz had an RBI, while John Taylor had a hit and a run scored. Dan Gusel had a run scored, an RBI and two walks.

Willowbrook took advantage of eight walks in the game.

Ferguson and Pelsor each doubled, while Espinoza and Ferguson each had a triple and Kelso homered. Dembowski stole two bases.

Eric Gunst was the winning pitcher. He went five innings and allowed four hits and one earned run, while striking out eight. Vince Ruchala pitched the final two innings and fanned four.

Three Willowbrook pitchers then combined to throw a four-inning perfect game in Willowbrook’s 22-0 win over Proviso in Maywood.

Willowbrook scored eight runs in the first inning and nine more in the fourth. The Warriors needed only nine hits to score those 22 hits, tak-

ing advantage of 11 walks.

Espinoza had a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Ceh had a run scored, an RBI and a walk as well, while Nick Sabatino scored two runs and had an RBI and a walk. Mintz hit a grand-slam home run, while Ranieri had two runs scored and two hits.

Dembowski had two runs scored, a hit and an RBI. Mason Kamp had a run scored and two walks.

Ferguson had two runs scored, two hits and two RBI. Jack Hines scored three runs, had a hit, drove in five RBI and drew a walk. Trevor Jaloszynski had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Gusel had an RBI and two walks.

Jaloszynski had two doubles, while Ranieri had a double as well.

Jack Hines tripled, while Ferguson stole two bases.

Michaelson (5 strikeouts), Mintz (3 strikeouts) and Scott Kohrt (3 strikeouts) combined for the perfect game.

The trio faced only 12 Proviso East batters and combined to strike-

out 11 batters.

Willowbrook won the finale 20-2 in Villa Park thanks to 13 hits. The Warriors scored 14 runs over the first two innings.

Espinoza went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ranieri had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Mintz had a hit and two RBI. Kamp had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Pelsor scored two runs, while Jaloszynski had a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Ferguson also doubled in the game, while Espinoza had a triple.

Will Hines was the winning pitcher. He went three innings and struck out four. Brandon Shissler pitched the final two innings and struck out three.

Willowbrook wrapped the week with a 16-5 WSC crossover win against Glenbard West.

Willowbrook’s Grace Chantos ends her badminton career by winning three matches at state

While the high-school career of Willowbrook girls badminton standout Grace Chantos came to a close this past weekend at the IHSA finals in Charleston, another kept gaining momentum.

Willowbrook sophomore Hanna Konrath competed in her first state tournament where she won two matches. Combined, Chantos and Konrath won five matches in Charleston.

“I started playing badminton last year,” said Konrath. “Grace recruited me to try out for the team. We went to the same elementary and middle school together and know each other from that. She told me the sport and the team are a lot of fun. She said she got the hang of it pretty quickly. Plus, we kind of work the same way. I said I would give it a shot. I had fun the first couple days of tryouts.”

And then Konrath got moved up to the JV team last year. “It got intense really fast,” she said. “But that was even better for me. I like the intensity of it.”

Konrath agrees with Chantos assessment that badminton is the hardest of the three sports she plays. Like Chantos, Konrath also plays volleyball and basketball.

“I agree 100 percent,” she said.

“The conditioning is really hard and you are constantly moving out there front to back and side to side. The conditioning we do helps tremendously. It keeps me in good shape

throughout the year.”

Konrath, who steadily moved up Willowbrook’s singles depth chart this season and ended up taking third place at No. 2 singles at the West Suburban Conference Gold Division tournament, said her badminton game has seen a complete improvement this season.

“Since I’m still young, I’ve been improving at everything and learning more,” she said. “One thing I’ve noticed is I don’t get tired or exhausted. My conditioning has been pretty good.”

Konrath also has picked up on the nuances and finer points of the sport.

“At first I was out there kind of playing backyard badminton,” she said.

“I’ve changed pretty quick. (Willowbrook coach Brandon) Murphy has really helped me this year. He is an amazing coach.”

And Konrath has benefitted greatly from Chantos’ tutelage. “Grace has helped me from the start,” she said. “She helped me last year and she’s not only helped me with badminton, but with basketball and volleyball. She’s always been there for me. She’s probably the best role model anybody could ask for.”

Making the state tournament this year wasn’t something Konrath took for granted.

“Ever since I’ve been young I’ve competed with older girls,” she said.

“This is an amazing accomplishment that means a lot. I’ve played a lot of sports and I always want to do the best I can.”

shows how much I’ve improved,” said Chantos. “I worked really hard all summer and in the other two seasons I play sports to improve in badminton.”

Chantos took private lessons in the summer and played in a club that was run by the Downers Grove North coaches.

“The club was a bunch of girls working on different drills,” she said.

“I worked on my backhand and my footwork. I would say it definitely was my footwork that helped me improve and get better this year. I would say the best part of my game this season has been being able to move and put my opponent in a place that will set me up for winning shots. I got quicker and my conditioning was a lot better than last year.”

Chantos recalls the reason she originally tried out for badminton freshman year at Willowbrook.

“I tried out for fun,” she said. “I thought it would be an easy sport. I

play volleyball and basketball as well and I thought badminton would be a break. It wasn’t. It’s the hardest sport I play by far. We are held to high standards. Willowbrook always has had a good badminton team. We put in a lot of work and do a lot of conditioning.

We really push each other and ourselves. I was the only girl who went downstate last year. That really meant something to keep the tradition going and compete down there.”

Chantos, who finished second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division this season and beat a Downers Grove South player for the first time in four years at the conference tournament, enjoys the sport for several reasons. “I like that it was something new to me,” she said. “I like to challenge myself. It’s the only non-team sport I play. It’s all up to me. The pressure is on myself.”

Chantos has played three sports all four years at Willowbrook. “It’s been hard doing that, but I’ve always been

into sports,” she said. “I’ve done three sports since I was in fifth grade and I’ve always had to do well in school if I wanted to play sports. It’s all about time management.”

Chantos is headed to the University of Illinois this fall and is looking into studying agricultural and biochemical engineering. “I want to work with the environment,” said Chantos, who noted Illinois does have a club badminton team.

Looking back, Chantos, who has a 3.9 grade-point average, said her time at Willowbrook has been well-spent beyond just sports.

“Willowbrook has done so much for me,” she said. “I’ve written so many scholarship essays with the same question. Willowbrook helped me as a student and as a person. I’ve made great relationships here with teachers who have totally prepared me for college. I think I had the best high school experience I could have hoped for.”

Addison Trail baseball team working through tough stretch

By Mike Miazga Correspondent The Addison Trail baseball team hit a recent rough patch.

Through late last week the Blazers had lost five games in a row, that included a recent tough 11-inning loss in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action to Leyden.

In the Leyden loss, Addison Trail standout pitcher Nick Villasenor threw 7 2/3 innings and allowed no runs, while striking out 10.

Leyden scored three runs in the ninth inning, but Addison Trail came back to score three in the bottom of the ninth to tie it. Leyden came right back and scored five runs in the 11th inning.

“It was a tough way to lose,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy.

Kennedy again had high praise for Villasenor’s performance.

“Nick is still by far and away leading the area in strikeouts,” he said.

Villasenor, who has committed to

play at Black Hawk College next season, lowered his ERA to 0.95 after the Leyden game and had 87 strikeouts on the season.

“Nick is a lefty who doesn’t walk batters and hits his spots,” said Kennedy. “He’s out there competing.

Against Leyden he was outstanding.

For a while he didn’t have his best stuff and then he got people up and tuned it up. He was very impressive in the late innings. He’s starting to get people to garner some interest in him.

He’s piling up the strikeouts. He’s getting more attention.”

Kennedy also has been pleased with the performances of Trevor Fulmer, Matt Crandall and Simon Marinelli of late.

“Trevor has thrown the ball well for us on the mound. He’s out there competing,” he said. “Matt and Simon are swinging the bat real well.”

Kennedy said Addison Trail’s recent struggles have boiled down to

one main factor. “It’s the elusive big hit,” he said. “That’s it. We’re looking for the big hit with runners in scoring position. When we need the big hit we don’t get it. It was the same thing in the second and third games against Willowbrook and the first two against Leyden. We need to get that big hit and that big play and we’re not getting it right now.

“The good thing is our energy is good and we are competing. The only thing is that timely hit is not coming through right now. Our pitching has been pretty good and it has been keeping us in games.”

Addison Trail was scheduled to play a three-game WSC Gold series with Morton this week. Looking ahead, the Blazers will play against West Chicago in a Class 4A regional opener with the winner moving on to face Geneva.

“We’ll keep working hard,” said Kennedy. “We just need to finish these games.”

Fenton boys gymnast Ricardo Torres recently competed in the IHSA state finals meet at Hinsdale Central.

Torres finished in 33rd place on the pommel horse with a score of 7.900.

Fenton girls track The Fenton girls track team finished 15th at the recent York sectional.

Hanna Matuszewski took third in the 100 dash for the Bison with a

time of 12.95. Sarah Mason was 13th in the 200 with a time of 27.46. Cassidy Kelly took 16th in the 800 with a time of 2:29.97.

Jessica McCauley was 19th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:52.71.

Fenton’s 400 relay was 10th with a time of 51.47. That team included Trisha Butz, Stephany Padilla, Matuszewski and Mason.

Fenton also was 12th in the 800 relay with a time of 1:55.16. That team featured Amber Azim, Jezalyn Tapia, Rebecca Millard and Matuszewski.

Fenton’s 1,600 relay was 13th in 4:25.30 with Ashley Lira, Millard, Mackenzie Miller and Cassidy Kelly.

Julianna Krebasch tied for 12th in the high jump at 4-9. Cassidy Fed-

dersen and Katrina Krebasch tied for 11th in the pole vault with marks of 8-3 each.

Mason finished seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 35-3.

Fenton did not qualify any individuals or relays for this weekend’s state meet.

In earlier action, the Bison competed in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division meet. Matuszewski finished fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.15, while Mason was fifth at 13:44.

Mason took third in the 200 at 27.58 and Matuszewski was fourth at 27.72. Cassidy Kelly was fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:05.13, while Mackenzie Miller was sixth at 1:08.02.

Brianna Aldama was 10th in the 800 at 2:48.10. Jessica McCauley took fifth in the 1,600 in 6:03.27, while Charity Bullis was ninth at 6:26.21.

Bullis was eighth in the 3,200 with a time of 13:42.48.

Kaitlyn Jordan placed sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 20.21, while Jocelyn Ramirez was seventh at 20.68.

Rebecca Millard was fifth in the 300 hurdles at 56.77. Ruth Kirkwood was sixth at 59.18. Fenton took second in the 400 relay with a time of 52.07. Fenton was fourth in the 800 relay at 1:57.15 and fifth in the 1,600 relay at 4:27.12.

Fenton placed second in the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:33.62.

Fenton boys track team making strides Sanchez earns PR in recent 3,200 race

While the Fenton boys track team may be a bit on the young side, that doesn’t mean it has been short on success.

Fenton has been paced by the likes of junior Cristian Sanchez in the 3,200 and 1,600 races and sophomore Jimmy Deckert in the field events.

Sanchez ran 10:31.74 in the 3,200 and took first place in a recent week-

end meet. “Cristian had an amazing PR,” said Fenton coach Clint Porter.

“That same day he doubled in the 1,600 and ran 4:55.”

Porter also has been pleased with the 800 times he’s seen in the 3,200 relay. “Michael Lieggi is under 2:10 and we expect that by conference and sectionals he will be under 2:05,” he said. “Jeremy Lodewyck also is showing steady improvement and is not far behind Michael. Both of them are juniors.”

Deckert has gone 133 feet in the discus and took third at Streamwood in that event. Deckert also

has thrown 41-5 in the shot put this year. “Those both are strong marks for a sophomore, especially the discus mark,” Porter noted. “As Jimmy continues to work on his footwork and technique we feel he will be a potential qualifier in his junior and/ or senior years.”

Fenton also is improving in the sprinting events. “Our sprinters have shown steady progress,” said Porter.

Freshman Kevin Gonzalez is the team’s fastest sprinter. He has run in the low 12-second category in the 100 and has a time of 24.9 in the 200.

In the hurdles, Porter noted for the

first time in recent memory the team has three athletes in the 300 intermediate race. Junior DJ Kelly has run a sub-50-second time in the hurdles.

“Right on his heels at 50 seconds is sophomore newcomer Nick Herringer,” said Porter.

Porter said the squad is looking forward to the remainder of this season and beyond. “The season has been a good one for the development of our young athletes,” he said. “We look forward to building upon this both this year and in years to come.”

Fenton has only five seniors on the roster this season.

Fenton girls track team impressive in recent meets

By Mike Miazga Correspondent The Fenton girls track team had a strong April.

The Bison placed second at the Montini Invitational and then took third at the Leyden event. Fenton followed that up by winning its own Bison Invitational and then taking first in a Metro Suburban Conference triangular meet last week.

Individually, Hanna Matuszewski won the long jump at Leyden with a mark of 16-1.

At the Bison event, Cassidy Feddersen won the pole vault with a new meet record of 8-6. Matuszewski won the 100 in 12.5, while Sarah Mason won the triple jump with a mark of 34-10. Katrina Krebasch won the high jump at 5-0.

Indoors earlier in the season, Krebasch broke the school record in the pole vault with a leap of 10-6.

Fenton coach Frank Kekstadt noted between the team’s two most recent meets, the Bison Invitational and the MSC tri-meet (where Fenton did not enter in five events), it set 75 individual personal records.

“That indicates to me that we are showing consistent improvement across all events,” he said. “It also means we are healthy and strong going into the MSC championship meet (Friday at Fenton).”

Kekstadt noted the 3,200 relay team has remained the same since the indoor season and has shown steady improvement. Kekstadt pegs the 400 relay as the team’s strongest, placing in the top three of all Fenton’s meets this year. The 1,600 relay ran 4:24 at the Bison event, which is the best time Kekstadt has seen in five years. The

coach said the 800 relay team is still a work in progress in terms of personnel. “We have to decide if we are going to use the same girls as the 4-by100 or use some younger girls to fill spots which will open the 200 dash for Hanna Matuszewski and Sarah Mason, our top speedsters,” he explained.

Kekstadt, in his 10th season as head coach, has seen Fenton once again excel in the field events. “Since I have been head coach our strength always has been our field events,” he said. “I always want our most talented girls to try field events. This year is no exception—we have very talented girls in the field events. We score the majority of our points in the triple jump, pole vault, high jump and long jump.”

Kekstadt also cited recent strong efforts from sophomore Ruth Kirkwood and senior Agnes Gasior. “Ruth has PRs in every long- and mid-distance event this year,” he said. “I don’t think

I have had a girl improve so much over such a short period of time in so many running events. She is a versatile runner that allows me to put her in every distance event. This makes the lineup very competitive.

“Agnes is a selfless leader who has transitioned during the outdoor season from a mid-distance runner to a competitive thrower. She knows the team is first and I rely on her for leadership and for being a great role model for the rest of the team.”

Fenton is looking forward to Friday’s MSC meet. “The season has gone by so fast and the showdown with Glenbard South has finally arrived,” said Kekstadt. “Last year we were the favorites and ended up in second place by one point. This year we are the underdog. We are focused on breaking personal records and demonstrating excellence in athletics.”

Friends of the Library book sale Join the Friends of the Library for their spring sale to be held at the library, 305 So. Ardmore Ave. The sale will include hundreds of books (fiction and non-fiction), as well as DVDs, audiobooks, and CDs. Many are donations and in very good to like-new condition.

All items will be available at bargain prices. Some items will be sold at slightly higher prices (no more than $5). Saturday is bargain day, with a bag of books going for $5. The book sale is sponsored by the Friends

of the Villa Park Library, a 501(c)(3) organization, and all proceeds will be used to fund future library programs.

Sale hours are: Thursday, May 18 from 7-8:30 p.m. - Friends members only preview sale.

Friday, May 19 from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Open to the general public.

Summer Camp registration begins Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for Summer Camp for kids ages 5-12.

This camp runs 10 weeks from June 5-August 11 and meets daily 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Iowa Community Center, 338 N. Iowa.

Register children by the week or by the day.

Register your camper for all 10 weeks of camp by May 30 and pay your fees in two installments. If a camper needs to extend their camp day, Sunrise and Sunset Camps are available for additional fees.

Camp is packed with outdoor adventures, arts and crafts, games, sports, fishing, cookouts, special events, weekly field trips and afternoons at Jefferson Pool.

All activities are included in the camp fee. Each week of camp has a different theme that is celebrated on Theme Fridays.

Willowbrook girls soccer team opens postseason play

The Willowbrook girls soccer team opened play earlier this week in the Class 3A York regional against Fenwick.

Heading into the final stretch of the regular season, Warriors coach Julio Del Real’s squad defeated District 88 neighbor Addison Trail 4-0 in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game and also scored a 2-0 non-conference win against Glenbard North and tied Glenbard East 2-2 in another non-conference contest.

The Warriors also lost 1-0 in double overtime to Morton and 3-0

to Downers Grove South in a pair of WSC Gold games.

Through 16 games, the Warriors were 6-9-1 overall and finished with a 3-3 mark in conference.

Del Real lauded in particular the recent play of Jessica Ragucci and Valentina Poggi. “Jessica and Valentina have been doing an outstanding job of keeping the team together and playing very well defensively,” he said.

Del Real noted the team’s defense has excelled despite injuries affecting the lineup. “Our team defense has been playing outstanding,” he said. “We have been hit by the injury bug and it has really hurt us. However, we have found other individuals who have stepped up to get the job done. We are an outstanding defensive team. As a team they are doing a great job preventing the other teams from reaching our goal.”

That strong defense includes

goalie Zoe Ericson. “Zoe is a improvement on defense, we are great effort, our defensive play, the unique individual who plays an odd looking for a great run in the state teamwork and the ability to overstyle of goalkeeping,” compliment- playoffs. She has come up with a good number of great saves that have kept us in a few games.”

Del Real said the team continues to work on the offensive part of the game. “We are struggling at creating opportunities for our forwards and have been working to find ways to improve as we get ready for the postseason,” he noted.

Del Real added he’s been impressed with his team’s willingness to adapt to different situations. “We have been able to overcome some injuries and we continue to find individuals who step up to meet the challenge” he said. “This team adapts very well to game situations and that enabled us to put a great streak together in the middle of our season.
