Cullerton: We need to invest in ‘agribusiness’ to grow economy Statistics indicate that Illinois’ 74,300 farms cover nearly 27 million acres, or about 75 percent of the state’s total land area, a fact State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) has come to appreciate and support in what he calls “agribusiness.”

As a participant in the Illinois Farm Bureau’s Adopt-A-Legislator program, Senator Cullerton was “adopted” by Montgomery County Farm Bureau, which he has been visiting ever since he was sworn into office in 2013 in an effort to learn more about the importance of agriculture and the needs of Illinois farmers.

“Agribusiness is vital to our economy,” Cullerton said. “The investments we make into agriculture not only help grow our economy but also puts food on our tables.”

Switching roles: Farm Bureau comes to Addison To switch roles so as to better understand suburban life, the Montgomery County Farm Bureau traveled to DuPage County last week to visit Cullerton’s district office and tour Addison Trail High School’s vocational programs. The group also went to Addison’s local family-owned manufacturer, SWD Inc., ending their visit with a reception with special guests Addison Mayor Rick Veenstra, County Board members Don Puchalski of Addison, Sam Tornatore from Roselle and John Curran of Downers Grove.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s recent budget proposals zeros out agriculture education, which Cullerton believes is the wrong direction for the state.

“Studies released show that the average age of Illinois’ farmers is 56 years old,” Cullerton said. “We need to educate our young people to keep agribusiness going.”

Last year, the Illinois Future Farmers of America (FFA) estimated more than over $11.8 million was generated by agriculture education students through entrepreneurial efforts, job placement or agri-science research.

• The Villa Park Board of Trustees meeting held at Village Hall on Monday, March 28, 2016 began with Village Clerk Hosanna Korynecky calling the roll. Because Village President Deborah Bullwinkel was absent, Trustee Al Bulthuis was designated President Pro Tem. Trustee Chris Aiello and Village Manager Richard Keehner were also absent from Monday’s meeting.

• The meeting began with a presentation by Clerk Korynecky of recent Senior Concerns Commission survey results. The survey sought input from Villa Park’s seniors on availability of recreation facilities and health resources.

“We wanted to see how our Village stacks up against other communities in serving senior residents,” said Korynecky.

According to Korynecky, the survey found that 88% of respondents gave a favorable response on the quality of ambulance and emergency medical services in Villa Park. 75% gave favorable responses to the senior transportation service ($1 rides). Public safety was rated favorable by 75% of respondents also. Overall costs of

living in DuPage County was put at just 38% by respondents, however 88% answered ‘favorable’ when asked about overall taxes.

One issue uncovered by the survey was that just 38% of respondents had working smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors. Changing batteries and reaching the devices were listed as challenges facing senior citizens.

• During the Consent Agenda portion of Monday’s meeting, the Board voted unanimously to approve 12 items, including: a) The Village Bill Listing dated March 28, 2016 in the amount of $1,128,699; b) Minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole meeting of March 14, 2016; c) Minutes from the Village Formal Board Meeting dated March 14, 2016; d) Minutes from the Budget Workshop dated March 21, 2016. e) A Resolution approving a second amendment to the Metra Coffee Shop lease. Toula Retsos, President of the Morning Blend Coffee Shop located in the Metra Station, requested assistance from the Village to set the rent at $130 per month. f) A Resolution approving an agreement between Villa Park and the State Dept. of Transportation for the North Side Sidewalk Improvement Project.

The cost of the salt would be $83,000. i) A Resolution authorizing the purchase of another 500 tons of rock salt through an agreement with the Illinois Department of Central Management Services. The cost of this purchase would also be $83,000 (in addition to the amount paid to DuPage County Procurement for salt). j) A Resolution approving an engagement letter with Sikich, LLP for audit services for fiscal year 2016 (May 1, 2015 through April 30, 2016).

The cost of the audit includes $19,982 for the Village funds, $1,288 for each of TIF districts 1-4, and $3,605 for the single audit, which will “likely be required,” according to Village staff. k) A Resolution approving a service agreement for a water system audit with Stanley Consultants, Inc. This year’s event, which typically draws several hundred people from throughout the area, will take place on Thursday, April 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Local tax attorney warns of loss of tax refunds Statute of limitations clock is ticking on 2012

ELMHURST — Local tax attorney Patrick T. Sheehan warns that if you have not yet filed your federal Form 1040 tax return for 2012 with the IRS, any refund listed on that tax return will soon be barred by the refund statute of limitations.

“Generally speaking, a taxpayer has three years from the due date of the tax return to claim a refund for that year, plus any extension,” he said.

“The due date of the 2012 federal Form 1040 tax returns was April 15, 2013. If an extension was not timely filed, the expiration of the refund statute of limitation for 2012 is April 18, 2016. If you have not yet filed your federal Form 1040 tax return for 2012 with the IRS, I strongly urge you

to do so on or before April 18, 2016, to ensure that you receive the refund to which you are entitled.”

The IRS recently announced that nearly 1 million people should have filed federal returns but didn’t, leaving $950 million in unclaimed refunds for 2012. According to IRS estimates, half of the potential refunds for 2012 are $718 or more, Sheehan said.

If your tax return for 2012 is filed on or after April 18,

2016, and if an extension was not timely filed, the law bars any refund to which you are entitled. Even if you have unpaid liabilities for other years, the lost refund does not apply to any of the other years.

“The application of this law acts to deny refunds to which hard-working Americans are otherwise entitled,” Sheehan said. “Unfortunately, many millions of dollars are lost in this fashion every year simply

because taxpayers did not file their tax returns within the applicable limitation period.

I would rather see these funds go into the pockets of the taxpayers who earned this money instead of being kept by the federal government.”

Addison March 30 • Haven A. Bailey, 20, of Addison, was arrested at around 3:55 p.m. Police said Bailey had an outstanding failure to appear warrant/driving while license suspended and no insurance.

• Alberto Galvez, 19, of Addison, was arrested in the 300 block of Park at around 8:53 p.m. and charged with obstructing a police officer, after police said Galvez ran from them. According to police, it also was determined that Galvez had four active warrants, including one from Glendale Heights.

• Adrian Gonzalez-Lopez, 18, of Addison, was arrested in the 1-100 block of W. Elizabeth at around 1:52 p.m. Police said Gonzalez-Lopez was processed on an outstanding Cook Coun-

ty failure to appear warrant/ disorderly conduct.

• A 33-year-old Hillside resident was arrested at around 7:45 a.m. by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office after police said it was determined that he had an outstanding original warrant out of Addison for domestic battery.

f you are not familiar with Pandora online radio, you create your own station by typing in the name of the artist you want to hear. Pandora plays that group or artist and other songs by folks in that same general mood or genre. Imagine my delight the first time we created a Barry Manilow station.

Song after song was pure joy.

The Barry was followed by The Carpenters, then Air Supply, then Lionel. On and on, old delights came on. Bread.

Chicago. Neil Diamond. Kenny Rogers.

Big names of my once upon a time mixed in with lesser remembered singers like Paul Davis’s “I Go Crazy” or “Baby Come Back” by Player. (Yeah, haven’t heard those in forever but you will know the words.)

Of course I know all the words to every Barry song, every Karen Carpenter line, and I can lip sync Air Supply like nobody’s business. But I was surprised at all the songs that came on that I had not heard in years (decades) and had forgotten even existed, and yet I could sing along word for word.

Down(town)-sizing (Note from the Elm Noir Columnist: The following is meant to be read aloud in a worldweary Humphrey Bogart / Jack Webb voice.)

So we left The City in 1983 to get away from the roaring, clanking, screeching El. Now we live a hundred feet from the Union Pacific railroad line.

Life’s funny sometimes.

Oh sure, in the 30 years between the El and the train station, we lived in a house in Elmhurst. I took one look at those cute French doors and that big backyard and melted faster than a gelato cone in a Turkish bath.

Fast-forward three decades.

Columnist The kids came and went, and now we’re back in a city apartment, still in Elmhurst. We live in a second-story walk-up, built when they believed in tall ceilings. The climb up to the second floor would make Edmund Hillary take one look and say not today.

Of course, Elmhurst has changed a lot in 30 years. The

downtown used to have three hardware stores, three bookstores, and at least three knifeand-fork joints where you could get a stack of flapjacks and a slab of pie, no questions asked.

Now there are hairdressers and manicure salons along with three restaurants selling uncooked fish. Makes you feel out of place, like a basketball hoop in the Sistine Chapel.

Anyway, our apartment being by the train station is great.

You can see everything and everybody from our front window with enough time, when necessary, to get out the back door, clatter down the stairs, high-jump over the dump-

sters, and dodge into the rear entrance of the resale shop next door. You can browse their fine selection of fedoras until the coast is clear.

But there are times when we need to get farther away. We believe in keeping your friends close and your enemies in custody, but it’s an imperfect world, and sometimes we need to take it on the lam until the bounty hunter does his part.

So we have a little place in a nearby state, sort of a safehouse. The area there is woodsy, the taxes are low, and it’s so quiet and dark at night, you can’t sleep.

It’s dark because there are few homes and fewer street-

lights – none, in fact. No sewers either. No police, no fire, no first responders, no second responders. I guess that’s why the taxes are low.

Folks there have the “Streetcar Named Desire” Blanche DuBois theory of local government: depend on the kindness of strangers or get lost.

Actually, there is a volunteer fire department, but it’s regarded as a sign of weakness if you call them: what kind of property owners can’t take care of their own fires?

Well, that’s all for now. I’ll be checking in with you periodically, but remember: never go to a pool party at a sewage treatment plant.

My current battle involves a long-sleeved white polyester T-shirt. It belongs to my son and was a special birthday gift he picked out himself. It is embellished with the correct and trendy logo favored by those who wish to score high on the cool-meter.

Let me tell you a little something about polyester. It’s the fabric of choice for stylish sports-oriented kids and yogapant wearing moms. According to my extensive Internet research, polyester is a synthetic polymer, which is a fancy term for plastic in disguise. It resists wrinkles, fading, shrinking and is form fitting, durable and pretty darn comfortable. It’s also troublesome for laundry-challenged folks like myself.

That’s because oil and polyester do not mix.

Polyester is touted as an easyto-care-for fabric. Unless you get an oil stain. My son got an

oil stain.

Unfortunately, as the laundry guru I’ve already established myself to be, I did not notice the stain or pre-treat the stain or otherwise attend to the stain in any manner or fashion until after the (nearly new, favorite) shirt went through the entire laundry cycle – including the dryer. I can hear your gasps of horror and disbelief, and I do apologize.

That was two weeks ago.

We’ve been at war ever since – me versus the shirt. What started as a small grease stain has morphed into a larger area, probably because of my attempts to remove the stain with any number of concoctions that were not Google-approved. (I started this fight as a lone soldier. I’ve since gone online for expert reinforcements, which have, regrettably, also proved unsuccessful.)

In the process, the shirt seems to have taken on a dingy, gray-

ish tint that I’m determined to correct. I’ve tried every remedy outlined online by my allies – laundry kings and queens who actually blog about the topic.

Right now the little bugger is soaking in a mixture of vinegar, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide and hot water. I think/hope it’s looking whiter. The whole experience has left me exhausted and smelling like pickles.

I am tempted to take the shirt out of the soak and put it through another wash cycle, but I’m afraid of my adversary’s next move. Still, I remain determined. Although the shirt has proven a worthy opponent, failure and defeat are not in this warrior’s vocabulary.

A tiny grease spot on a favorite shirt has grown into something bigger than any shirt or stain or laundry-crusading mom.

It is about relentless pursuit of the enemy, endurance during combat, conquering the opposition and claiming victory over the polyester. No surrender. No retreat.

Mark my words: The. Shirt.

Will. Not. Win.

Willowbrook drama competes at state VILLA PARK — On March 24, Willowbrook hosted a State sendoff celebration for the cast and crew of the school’s spring contest play, “Dancing at Lughnasa” by Brian Friel.

The group was scheduled to participate in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Drama & Group Interpretation Competition, on April 1 and 2 at University of Illinois Springfield.

The 46 WB students in the play competed against six other schools in the Sectional competition on March 19 to qualify for State. Willowbrook finished in 2nd place.

Several students also received awards: Seniors Galen Bergsten and Hannah Watkins received All-Sectional Student Sound Director honors Sophomore Marissa Fairbank and senior Anthony Interrante received All-Sectional Student Lighting Director honors Senior Mariana Martens and sophomores Julia Cicero, Kathleen Cicero and Genevieve Corkery received AllSectional Cast honors.

Conroy legislation targets fraudulent pension payments SPRINGFIELD — To save taxpayer dollars and reduce fraud in the state’s pension systems, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, recently filed legislation that would require state pension funds and retirement systems to adopt a system to routinely identify deceased recipients and stop pension payments to those individuals.

“To get our state’s finances in order, we have a responsibility to the taxpayers to reduce wasteful government spending,” she said. “This bill will codify existing practice to ensure that every pension fund and retirement system in the state is proactively removing deceased individuals from their systems each and every month. The state is facing unprecedented financial challenges, and we must consider every possible way to cut waste and make government more efficient.”

Conroy filed House Bill 6030 in response to a study that discovered that over $2 million in pension benefits had been paid to deceased

recipients from 2010 to 2014. Conroy’s legislation will require state pension funds and retirement systems to adopt a method to identify anyone who has passed away every month and stop payments from being given to the deceased.

Retirement funds may choose their own method of identifying recently deceased annuitants, including contracting through third-party companies or utilizing existing data from the Social Security Administration or Illinois Department of Public Health.

“After someone passes away, we should make it a priority to cut off payments immediately,” Conroy said. “Not only would this legislation save money, but it would also help families who are unaware of the steps that they have to take when a loved one passes away. The state must be held accountable to reduce spending, and this legislation is a simple, common-sense way to save millions of dollars.”

Willowbrook boys volleyball team opens season with win Warriors coming off 22-win season in 2015

The Willowbrook boys volleyball team got its season off to a strong start with a recent 25-15, 25-19 non-conference win over Elgin Larkin.

Pete Alessandri had two kills, while Lucas Betts had one kill, eight assists and three

digs. Joe Ernst had five kills and two blocks. Calvin Linnig had once ace and five assists.

Calvin Kilas had two assists.

Joe Ragucci had three kills.

Max Sarovich had one ace, two assists and one dig. Andy Shereckengost had three kills.

Ivan Tassev had two kills and three aces, while Brendan Waldorf had three kills. Ian Walsh finished with one kill, two blocks and two aces.

Willowbrook also dropped a 25-17, 25-18 non-conference decision to Glenbard East.

Alessandri had three kills,

while Betts had three kills, two blocks and seven assists.

Linnig had six assists. Jake Maksymec had one kill, one ace, three assists and five digs.

Ragucci had one kill and one block. Tassev had three kills and one dig. Waldorf had three kills, one ace and one dig, while Walsh had four kills and two blocks.

Willowbrook is coming off a 2015 season where it went 22-15 and took third in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 4-2 mark.

Addison Trail boys volleyball team defeats Hoffman Estates Blazers coming off third-place state finish

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team evened its record a 1-1 thanks to a 25-23, 26-24 recent non-conference win over Hoffman Estates.

Jacob Grygo had 11 assists, six kills and three blocks. Colton Noel added six kills, while Kannon Nelms had five kills, three blocks and three aces. EricLynch finished with four kills. Michael Pudlo had three kills and two blocks, while David Zielinski had 14 assists and one kill. Arlind Rojba had nine digs.

Coach Chad Grant’s team features a number of players from last year’s squad that went 35-7, took second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 5-1 record and went on to finish third in the state. The Blazers defeated St. Patrick and Hinsdale Central in the state tournament before losing to eventual state-champion Glenbard West.

The Blazers came back to defeat Sandburg for third place.

Nelms, a senior middle blocker, had 107 kills and 55 blocks. Rojba, a junior libero, finished with 230 digs and 27 aces last year, while Noel, a junior outside hitter, had 16 kills and 12 blocks on the varsity.

Key newcomers to the team include juniors Eric Lynch (outside hitter) and Alex Murillo (middle blocker), along with sophomores Grygo (setter), Zielinski (setter), Pudlo (middle blocker), Christopher Garcia (defensive specialist) and Bryan Florian (defensive specialist).

Size, length and overall athleticism will help the Blazers this season. “We have a

bunch of good jumpers who hit the ball hard,” said Grant. “We will spread the ball around to all our hitters and have a number of strong options.”

Serve-receive continues to be a focus in the practice gym. “Our serve-receive and defense are works in progress,” said Grant. “Arlind is a great libero, but outside of him, our backrow spots will be filled with sophomores and first-time back-row players.”

Grygo and Zielinski are both left-handed, sophomore setters. “Both will get time,” said Grant. “Jacob is tall, long and confident. He plays well around the net, is a strong blocker already and gives us another option as an attacker. David is incredibly smart, quick and instinctive. He will contribute as an attacker by the end of the year as well.”

Grant also likes sophomore Pudlo’s quickness in the middle. “Michael has shown really good instincts in our first two matches,” said Grant. “He jumps well and has a tough serve.”

The coach also is looking for big things from Noel. “Colton got spot playing time as a sophomore, but will be a big contributor this year,” he said. “We will be counting on him for offense and to potentially be our best blocker. He is a very physical kid that plays well above the net.”

Grant likes the potential he sees in this year’s group. “They possess a lot of physical traits that can’t be coached,” he said. “They understand the expectations of the program and want to be successful. We are young right now, but we will be good given some time.

The regular season is all about development for us. I’m not concerned about wins and losses. It’s all about the process. We want to get better every day. We expect to be very competitive by late May.”

Back for the Warriors are Seniors Ivan Tassev (6-0, outside hitter), Ian Walsh (6-6, middle blocker) and Lucas Betts (6-1, setter). A key newcomer to the team is junior libero Jack Maksymec (5-9).

Walsh had 148 kills, hit .479 and had 129 blocks last year, while Tassev had 31 kills, hit .407 and passed at a 2.30 clip on a 3.0 scale.

“One of the strengths of the team is we are returning a number of players who have varsity experience from last year,” said coach Ryan Bazon.

“These players have continued to grow physically and athletically and we look to build on our season from last year.”

Passing will be a key for the Warriors this spring. “I feel like our offensive game can be very effective if our passing is on,” said Bazon. “We have very strong and smart hitters at all positions. One of our goals is to continue working to become more efficient hitters with less errors.”

Defense at the net also is a strong suit. “I feel like the guys are very strong at the net, especially in the middle,” said Bazon. “We hope to put a lot of pressure on opposing hit-

ters with our block. We need to continue to work hard in practice on our serve-receive/ passing/free-ball offense.”

Betts, a senior, and Linnig, a junior, take over the setting responsibilities from graduated all-conference performer Tommy King. “Lucas and Calvin have stepped into this role,” said Bazon. “Lucas has a great desire to learn and lead the team this season. I look forward to watching both players progress this season.”

Walsh also will be a big factor for Bazon’s squad this season. “He is big, strong and has a very high volleyball IQ,” said Bazon. “Ian is very coachable and is a great kid.”

Bazon has been pleased with what he’s seen in the practice gym thus far. “The thing I like the most about our team is our continued desire to improve on the court,” he said.

“Our players do not want to settle for mediocrity and that comes from the leadership of our seniors. Every year we strive to win more than we lose. The goal always is to put a competitive team out on the court, which can hopefully lead to success in our conference.”

Fenton boys volleyball coach Heather Petersen said her team has something that can’t be coached.

And she feels that bodes well for the 2016 season.

“The team has great chemistry and they all are very motivated to improve,” she said.

“They look forward to playing great competition to step up to the competition’s level. They all are very scrappy and make some great things happen by never giving up on the ball.”

Fenton’s top returners this year include junior outside hitter Javy Sanchez and junior

middle blocker David Gutierrez.

Key newcomers include juniors Michael Wiszowaty (setter, middle blocker) and Ethan Guerra (outside hitter) and sophomore Andrew Hill (setter).

“We have some great threats all around and have the opportunity to move the ball around,” said Petersen.

On the defensive front, Fenton is making huge strides with its passing. “The passing has improved so much in the little time we have had this season so far,” said Petersen. “The boys believe passing is the foundation of the game and can’t compete with teams if we don’t set up our offense.”

IC Catholic Prep boys track team ready for a strong season Knights return four state qualifiers

The IC Catholic Prep boys track team has no shortage of accomplished athletes on its roster this spring.

The Knights return four state qualifiers from a year ago in Jordan Rowell, Aaron Taylor, Luke Calles and Luke Ricobene. Rowell finished second in the state in the 400, third in the 100 and sixth in the 200 last spring. Taylor was part of IC Catholic Prep’s 400, 800 and 1,600 state relay teams. Calles

was part of the 400 and 800 teams, while Ricobene was part of the 800 and 1,600 teams.

The Knights picked up where they left off at the recent Metro Suburban Conference indoor meet where senior Aaron Taylor won the 200 title. Rowell won the 55 dash and long jump titles and took second in the 400.

IC Catholic Prep’s 4-by-160 relay team was second with Ricobene, Josh Simmons, Calles and Taylor. The 1,600 team also took second with Ricobene, Khalil Sanders, Simmons and Calles.

“Our boys really performed well,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Bob Cronin. “Jordan

won both the long jump and 55 and probably wins the 400 if he didn’t tweak his foot a little on the last curve. We didn’t run him in the 200 just to be cautious. Aaron Taylor won the 200, but Jordan probably would have given us a first and second. Our relays performed well, but I think we’ll get better as we work on both the participants and our exchanges when we get outdoors. Our team is pretty deep and having choices to make is really a nice place to be as a coach. All in all, our coaches are working hard to bring success to a talented group.”

In addition to senior Taylor (100, 200, sprint relays),

juniors Rowell (100, 200, 400, long jump) and Calles (200, sprint relays) and sophomore Luke Ricobene (300 hurdles, sprint relays), senior Jack Ricobene (300 hurdles, relays) also is back, as is sophomore Pat Shannon in the 1,600.

Newcomers to the team include seniors Will Lyles (high jump), Jeremy Anicella (throws), Josh Simmons (relays), Jon Simmons (relays), junior Jeff Casagranda (throws), sophomore Lazerick Eatman (sprints) and freshmen Khalil Sanders (400) and Khali Sanders.

Cronin said the team is particularly deep in the sprints.

The IC Catholic Prep girls track team has numerous reasons for optimism heading into the outdoor season.

For starters, sophomore Kier-

sten King is fresh off winning the 200 title at the Metro Suburban Conference indoor meet.

“Kiersten is a very strong sprinter and anchors our very competitive 400 and 1,600 relay teams,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Bob Cronin.

Additionally, senior Mikko Eguia is back after qualifying for state last year in the 800.

“Mikko returns as a two-time state qualifier and should go again in the 800,” said Cronin.

King also will run the 100 and do sprint relays, while Eguia will be part of the 1,600 relay. They are joined by returning athletes Kerry Mulligan (senior, sprint relays) and Katie Harvey (senior, sprint relays).

Newcomers to the team include senior Lillian Brown (shot put) and freshman Jaida Smith (100, 200 and sprint relays).

“Jaida is a freshman sprinter

and Lillian is a senior thrower.

They will surprise some people this year,” said Cronin. “They are good and want to be great.”

While the Knights’ roster is not large, it is brimming with desire and talent. “They work hard and want to succeed,” said Cronin. “We don’t have a large group, but our girls are tough and want to succeed. We hope Mikko returns downstate and has company with Kiersten and a relay or two.”

are the most dedicated team I have had as a whole. I feel like the boys will make some great strides this year. They still are young, although I foresee the team winning more games this season than we had last season.

The boys continue to get better every year.”

Cronin said expectations and goals are high for this year’s group. “They are focused on team success,” he said. “We want to compete for the outdoor conference title in the Metro, we want to win our school’s first sectional championship and we want to make noise in Charleston at the state meet.”

Professor Margaret Rung to address the emergence of suburbia History Museum welcomes distinguished educator from Roosevelt University

ELMHURST — The Elmhurst History Museum welcomes Roosevelt University Professor Margaret Rung for a free lecture on Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. The program takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst. Admission is free, and no preregistration is necessary.

Margaret Rung is an associate professor of history and chair of the Arts and Sciences Department at Roosevelt, with a PhD in history from The Johns Hopkins University. Her lecture, “Putting the ‘Burbs

into Context,” will trace the development of suburbia, both locally and nationally. Rung will examine the growth of consumer culture, shifting gender roles, race relations, and the often invisible legacies and traumas of the Great Depression and World War II that shaped American domestic life in the 1950s.

The program is presented in conjunction with the Elmhurst History Museum’s current traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian, “Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard,” which is open through May 29, 2016. Participants in the lecture are encouraged to view the exhibit in the first floor gallery before or after the 2 p.m. program. On April 9, the Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission to the exhibit is free.
