Two men electrocuted while trimming trees in Addison One dies, other stuck in tree when rescuers arrived

By Dee Longfellow

“I must emphasize, if you are not a professional, you really should not be up in the trees in the power lines trimming them,” said Addison Fire Protection District Chief Joe Leone. Walker said the general rule is, don’t get within 10 feet of a power

line. The men were working within a foot of a power line. “It appeared to be just a small line,” he said, “but it did turn out to have much higher voltage than anyone would’ve expected.” The identity of the other man in-

volved is still being investigated; however, it appears to be private homeowners and not a tree-cutting service, Addison officials said. “It doesn’t appear that they were professional tree trimmers and it may have been one person helping out an-

other person, homeowners,” Leone said. Com Ed personnel and the Addison Fire Department are investigating the incident. At press time, no other information was available.

FOR THE INDEPENDENT

On Tuesday afternoon, March 28, the Independent learned that two men had been injured at about 11 a.m. while trimming trees near Lake St. & Villa Ave. in Addison. The men were working in the backyard of a private residence “very close to power lines,” according to police, and reportedly struck a line, which electrocuted both of them. One man was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived on the scene, according to Scott Walker, Deputy Chief of the Addison Fire Protection District. “We had two individuals that were tree-trimming in a backyard,” Walker said. “It appears one of them came in contact with a high voltage line that basically shocked them both. We had one individual that was found on the ground and the other individual was unresponsive at the top of the ladder tied to a tree.” The second man was still secured in the tree and was stuck there until emergency help arrived to rescue him. He was shocked twice and ended up unconscious, rescue officials said. The Addison Fire Department. with assistance from the Lombard Fire Department, extracted the man. He was immediately air-lifted to a local level 1 trauma center in serious condition. His identity has not yet been disclosed. ComEd was notified and immediately cut power to the area. A third person working with the men called 911. Investigators are calling the incident an accident that could have been prevented.

It’s ‘Tater time! Volunteers at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Villa Park helped load 42,000 pounds of potatoes into individual vehicles. The annual “Potato Drop” took place on Saturday, April 1 this year. The spuds were destined for area food pantries.
