Synthetic cannabinoid products linked to severe bleeding County reports 22 cases since March 7

The DuPage County Health Department is providing this health alert to the community: use of a synthetic cannabinoid has been linked to an outbreak with potentially life-threatening reactions in Northeastern Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports 22 individuals since March 7 suffering from severe bleeding following the use of synthetic cannabinoid products.

Although individuals report obtaining synthetic cannabinoid products in the Chicagoland area, contaminated products could be in counties across the state.

Affected persons have reported obtaining cannabinoid products from convenience stores, dealers, and friends.

If you or someone you know purchased any of this product in the past month, do not use it. If you have used any of these products, and start experiencing unexplained bleeding or bruising, please have someone take you to the hospital immediately or call 911. Do not walk or drive yourself.

Patients should share with medical personnel what and when they used so that they can be treated quickly and effectively. Anyone with concerns about unusual bleeding should contact their health care provider and let them know if they have used synthetic cannabinoids.

Although the DuPage Narcan Program (DNP) saved 429 lives from 2014-17, the DuPage County Coroner recorded 274 opioid-related deaths during that same time.

In response to the most recent community health assessment, the goal of addressing substance use disorders is one of five health priorities that the DuPage County Health

Department has been working to address with partners throughout the community.

Similar to other chronic health conditions, “we recognize that substance use disorders require effective and evidence-based treatment,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of the health department.

This issue, however, is not felt only in the health sector, with

workplaces bearing a significant portion of costs due to absenteeism, increased healthcare expenses and lost productivity. The National Safety Council estimates the yearly economic impact of substance use disorder is over $442 billion dollars.

“Recent research indicates that one-in-three individuals know someone who has been impacted by the opioid crisis in recent years,” Ayala added.

The DuPage County Board of Health, through its unwavering commitment to the public’s health, supports increasing access to substance use disorder treatment for the residents of DuPage County.

Funding approved for St. Charles Bridge reconstruction Board approves engineering contract; grants to help pay for it

The Villa Park Board of Trustees has approved funding of the engineering portion of plans to reconstruct the St. Charles Road bridge.

At the Formal Meeting held on Monday, March 26, the Board unanimously passed two Resolutions that will finally get the repair process started for the bridge.

The bridge, which is just west of IL Rte. 83 and experiences heavy traffic loads as commuters drive east into Elmhurst, had emergency maintenance completed in September, 2017. All lanes are now open to traffic.

“It will still have the weight restrictions until the full bridge is replaced,” said Elmhurst City Manager Jim Grabowski at that time, “but it’s good news in terms of traffic flow through Elmhurst and Villa Park.”

Part of the bridge is in Elmhurst and the two municipalities are sharing the cost of repairs. The Villa Park Board of Trustees vote on Monday was to approve funding for engineering of the new bridge.

The full construction of the replacement bridge is estimated to cost $4 million. According to Villa Park staff, 80% of the funding had been secured through a bridge replacement grant. The process to receive the grants had changed since initial approval in 2017, however, and the Village had to reapply.

The nearly two-year budget impasse at the State level also put many projects, including the St. Charles Rd. bridge reconstruction, on hold.

“We have to go through this process again,” said Village President Al Bulthuis.

Engineering for the new bridge, which spans Salt Creek, should begin this year with letting of bids for the construction scheduled for April 26, 2019. Asked if the actual work could be completed in 2019, Village Director of Public Works Vydis

Juskelis did not sound optimistic.

“There are so many variables in the delivery of the project, things will have to go well for us to follow that schedule,” he said.

The first Resolution was needed to allow the Village to enter into a local public agency agreement (LPAA) with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for funding. The total cost of the engineering is estimated to be $250,000, and IDOT would pay $200,000 of that total, leaving the Village’s share at $50,000.

The second Resolution approved a preliminary engineering services agreement with V3 Companies of Illinois for the design engineering services of the St. Charles Road Bridge. The cost of this contract is not-to-exceed $223,280. The Village expects to receive Federal Surface Transportation Program bridge funding for 80% of the cost.

Once rebuilding begins, the bridge is expected to be closed for portions of the construction, have lane limitations and closures, and could take up to one full year to complete.

Czernek was transported to the Addison Police Department for processing on an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Lisette Valeriano, 18, and Brandun J. Williams, 27, both of Bensenville, were charged with retail theft and obstructing identification at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 2:11 a.m. Police said Valeriano and Williams approached the self-service cash register with two vacuums, two onions and two pairs of women’s leggings. According to police, they only scanned the cheaper of the two vacuums and the two onions. They then reportedly left the cheaper vacuum behind and took the more expensive vacuum, and the women’s leggings and attempted to leave the store when they were stopped by a Walmart employee. Valeriano and Williams provided officers with false names and date of births, police said.

Its neighbor to the east may claim “The Crossroads of America” title, but by nearly any measure, Illinois is the heart of the U.S. Interstate system.

Illinois has the third highest total of Interstate routes and mileage.

Only New York and California have more I-designated roadways, with 7- and 25-million more residents, respectively. Only Texas and California routes cover more mileage, though those states are 5- and 3-times larger by territory.

And the importance of the routes— many of which were designed to pass through or near Chicago, with its access to the global economy—further spell out the importance of Illinois as a hub of trans-U.S. travel. The two longest treks of the Interstate system, I-90 and I-80, pass through Illinois on their coast-to-coast journeys. And two key connections to the Gulf States, I-55 and I-65, reach their nadir in the Chicago area. Add in I-57, I-64, I-70 and I-94 and an Illinois driver can reach almost every population center in the nation by navigating one interchange.

established, becoming the Illinois State Toll Highway Commission in 1953.

The initial three toll roads, completed by 1958—the Jane Addams, Tri-State and East-West Tollways—all were eventually rolled into the Interstate system as the nationwide spiderweb of superhighways began to take shape.

Today, the re-christened Toll Authority has added I-355 and state Route 390 among the ranks of its administered roads.

By the early 1990s, the majority of the modern Illinois Interstate system was complete. As the USDOT planned supplementary highways in the 1960s and 1970s to fill in gaps between anchor roads of the original 1956 decree, Illinois laid down pavement over its vast farmlands. I-24 was completed in the south of the state, and the state’s portion of I-64 was completed in 1974.

State Route 5, the original moniker of the East-West Tollway, saw a re-designation to I-88 in 1987 as Illinois sought to raise the speed limit on the route connecting Chicago to the Quad Cities.

With that, I-39 saw its first segment replace the existing U.S. 51 from

U.S. 20 outside Rockford to Rochelle.

While IDOT had requested I-39 to stretch from the Wisconsin border to Marion County, the length of the proposed highway was shortened through a number of revisions, with the final route ending at Bloomington. U.S. 51 was upgraded through to Decatur as part of the overhaul.

Since the completion of I-39 in 1992, Illinois has seen only one new Interstate: the 9/10ths of a mile I-41 in Lake County. That roadway came about as a construct of the Wisconsin DOT re-purposing U.S. 41, from the north suburbs of Chicago to Green Bay, into an Interstate of its own. Its brief stint in Illinois sees it paired with I-94 as it crosses the state line.

All told, 24 routes—13 primary and 11 secondary—compose the modern Illinois Interstate, covering some 2,500 miles. And while Indiana may continue to lay claim to that “crossroads” crown, as Illinois celebrates 200 years—with nearly 1,000 more miles of blue-andred-signed roadways than its eastern neighbor—its residents should know that it is still the true heart of America’s fascination with the highway.

As the Interstate system began to take shape, Illinois’ road budget began its long climb to the present-day $14.1 billion figure. Maintenance costs ballooned from $59.6 million to $128.1 million during the 1950s. A state commission recommended the formation of IDOT, bringing the transportation system, including the interstates, under a single office in Springfield.

When IDOT formed in 1972, only I-64 remained incomplete from the U.S. government’s original Interstate plan, and I-72, then spanning from Champaign to Springfield, had been added to the state’s growing highway system. Throughout this rapid transition of the Illinois’s highway system, the bane of existence for commuters in and around the Chicago area came into existence: the Illinois Tollway.

As the state struggled to complete modern highways during World War Chicago is served by several Interstates, including I-55, I-57, I-80, I-90 II, the first tollway commission was and I-94 and their tributaries.

Interstate timeline 1916: The Federal Aid Road Act is passed to establish a nationwide system of modern highways. World War I prevents most of its funds from being disbursed, and the Act passes out of law in 1921.

1918: A civil engineer during a presentation at The Congress Hotel in Chicago proposes a 50,000-mile system of transnational highways.

1921: The Phipps Act, a reconstruct of the 1916 act, targets funding for a nationwide series of interconnected highways. Gen. John J. Pershing follows up with a proposed map of roads considered of importance to the national defense, with 20,000 miles of interconnected primary highways.

1939: The Bureau of Public Roads Division under President Franklin Roosevelt issues a report, “Toll Road and Free Roads,” now considered the first blueprint of the Interstate Highway System.

1941: The Toll Highway Authority is established as highway construction around Chicago stalls during World War II. 1951: The Edens Expressway, the state’s first expressway and now part of I-94, opens north of Chicago.

1953: The Illinois State Toll Highway Commission is estab-

lished, replacing the THA. 1955: Inspired by his travel across the United States as a young Army officer and his time in Germany during World War II, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announces plans for the modern Interstate system.

1956: The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 is signed into law, establishing the Interstate Highway System.

1957: Construction of I-80 begins, with the modern Kingery Expressway being the first section of Interstate open in Illinois.

1958: The Northwest, Tri-State and East-West Tollways open.

1959: The original five tollway oases are opened.

1964: The Stevenson Expressway, one of the first portions of I-55 completed near Chicago, opens.

The earliest stretch of I-55 was a reclaimed portion of U.S. 66. The St. Louis-Chicago connection was part of the second phase of Interstates finished in the 1970s.

1968: I-80 is completed.

1969: I-180, a 13-mile spur in the center of the state, is completed, connecting I-80 to the Jones & Laughlin steel plant in Hennepin.

The plant closes soon after I-180’s

completion and doesn’t re-open until 2002.

1971: I-57, Illinois’ longest Interstate at 386 miles, is completed near Paxton.

1972: IDOT is formed following a decade-long study of Illinois’ transportation system.

1978: The Eisenhower Expressway is re-designated as I-290. It was formerly considered part of I-90, which was moved to the Northwest Tollway and Kennedy Expressway.

1984: I-39 from Rochelle to Rockford is opened.

1987: I-88, the former East-West Tollway renamed in honor of President Ronald Reagan, is completed, reaching its west end at I-80 in East Moline.

1989: I-355 is opened in the western suburbs, alleviating traffic on the Tri-State Tollway and creating another bypass route around Chicago.

1992: I-39 is completed.

2009: I-490, a bypass around the west side of O’Hare International Airport, is proposed. Construction is expected to begin in 2018.

2015: I-41 is completed in northeast Lake County. The road runs only 9/10ths of a mile in Illinois.

GreenMan Theatre actors excited to enlist in Monstrous Regiment GreenMan Theatre has assembled a cast of eleven actors from around the area to appear in their upcoming spring production of Monstrous Regiment. The play is adapted

by Chicago area playwright and actor Chris Hainsworth from a 2003 novel by popular fantasy author Terry Pratchett.

The satirical novel follows the adventures of Polly Perks, who enlists in the army, along with an unlikely band of young recruits, and is promptly sent to the front lines. The story is part of Pratchett’s Discworld fantasy series. Pratchett ended up writing 41 novels based on this fictional world. The series has been extremely popular, selling more than 80 million copies worldwide. Fans of Discworld will certainly love seeing Pratchett’s characters come to life on stage, but the story of Monstrous Regiment stands alone. Audiences do not need to be familiar with the series to enjoy the play.

Actors discuss their roles Several of the actors cast in the play are familiar with the original books and are excited to share their love of the story with audiences. Cassandra Conklin, who plays Polly, said she has never been in such a creative show and that she is thrilled to have the opportunity to breathe life into the character of Polly. Allison Porschakin, who plays Carborundum, the troll, also is excited to be in a show with such an amazing cast. In one scene, her troll character al-

most gets into a fight with another monster! Brendan Mertens, who plays a variety of characters, including Death, notes that fans of the book will recognize Death as a recurring character in other Discworld books, although he has only a small role in Monstrous Regiment.

Asked about her role, Elizabeth Ley commented, “Who wouldn’t want to play a witty, supercilious vampire!?”

And for Marnie Warner, another huge fan of Pratchett, the opportunity to appear in Monstrous Regiment was a big enough incentive to get her out of her comfort zone; this will be Marnie’s first appearance in a non-musical.

Performance details Monstrous Regiment runs three weekends at GreenMan’s performance space at 232 S. York St. in Elmhurst.

The production opens Friday, April 13 and closes April 29.

Addison Trail softball team off to strong start

Blazers mixing in veterans with youthful talent

The Addison Trail softball team started its season strong but once again ran into the brick wall called Mother Nature.

The Blazers were 3-1 through late last week after beating West Chicago, Glenbard West and Springfield Lanphier and losing to Streamwood.

“Streamwood had a very good pitcher who dominated us,” said Addison Trail coach Mark Olson.

“Glenbard West was a good regional win.”

The win against Lanphier came during the team’s trip for a second year in a row to the Springfield-St. Louis areas. And once again, the trip was derailed by sour weather.

“We were rained out Saturday

and Monday during the trip and on our way home we were supposed to stop and play Coal City and that got rained out,” said Olson. “This is the second year in a row that has happened.”

Cancellations aside, Olson likes the group he’s working with. “We have a pretty good mix,” he said.

“We have a nice group of returning seniors—four of them, which is good—and we have three starting freshmen in the mix.”

One of those seniors is three-sport athlete Nicci Scorza who missed last softball season due to injury.

Right fielder Kathleen Lacni and left fielder Vincenza Zaccaro are seniors and three-year varsity players, while catcher and designated player Ginanna Trippiedi also is a three-

year player.

Addison Trail did lose the vast majority of its pitching experience to graduation and transfer. “We probably lost 99 percent of our innings from last year,” said Olson.

“That’s a tough thing to have to fill. But, we are battling. The one question mark we do have is on the mound. We have to make sure we aren’t walking a lot of people and giving out a lot of freebies. If we can keep doing what we can defensively and offensively, we’ll be able to build from there.”

Olson noted the team came back in two of its wins. Addison Trail was down 5-0 to West Chicago and ended up winning 15-9. It also was down 4-0 and 8-2 to Glenbard West and ended up winning 13-12.

Willowbrook baseball team keeps busy over spring break Hines homers and doubles in win against West Chicago

The Willowbrook baseball team packed plenty of games into its recent spring-break week.

The Warriors started the week with a 5-2 nonconference win at neighbor Glenbard East in Lombard.

Willowbrook led only 3-2 after six innings but scored two runs in the seventh inning to pull away.

The Warriors had 13 hits.

Scott Tumilty went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Sam Tumilty went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Ryan Mintz went 2-for-4, while John Taylor went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Nine different Willowbrook players had hits.

Sam Tumilty had two doubles, while Mason Kamp, Mintz and Jack Nilles each had a double. Jack Hines and Scott Tumilty each had a triple.

Mintz was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and allowed only five hits, while striking out four.

Joey Gutherie pitched the seventh inning and struck out one to earn the save. Mintz threw 86 pitches and threw a first-pitch strike to 15 of the 24 batters he faced.

Willowbrook won the JV game 14-0 in five innings thanks to a nine-run fifth inning. Sam Tumilty went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Sam Pelsor had two hits. Brandon Shissler threw a two-hit shutout to earn the win. He struck out eight.

Willowbrook then dropped a 7-6 non-conference game to Batavia. The Warriors led 5-3 at one point.

Willowbrook had nine hits, but made four errors.

Sam Tumilty had two hits and scored a run. Mintz went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Dan Gusel Jr., doubled and drove in three runs. Nilles also had a double. Vince Ruchala took the loss in relief.

Nilles started and went four innings. He allowed four

runs on six hits, but none of the runs were earned. He struck out four.

In the JV contest, Batavia was a 10-1 winner.

Taylor and Pelsor each had a hit. Josh Roucka took the loss.

The Warriors then downed West Chicago 13-0 in six innings. Willowbrook scored 11 runs over the fifth and sixth innings and had 10 hits.

Scott Tumilty went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Hines went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Danny Holloway had a hit and two RBI. Hines homered and doubled, while Scott Tumilty had a double. Sam Tumilty stole two bases.

Dax Meyer was the winning pitcher. He went five innings and allowed one hit, while striking out 10.

Guthrie pitched the sixth and struck out two.

In JV action, Willowbrook edged West Chicago 2-1 in a four-inning game. Holloway, Matt Tuma, Guthrie, Frank Clements and Ethan Pieniazek each had a hit. Mason Kamp was the winner in relief. He threw three innings and struck out eight.

The week concluded with Willowbrook dropping a 12-2 non-conference game to Andrew. Andrew broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning.

Sam Tumilty was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Mintz had a hit and an RBI. One of Sam Tumilty’s hits was a double. Guthrie took the loss. He struck out three. Andrew Schellhorn pitched in relief.

Andrew won the JV game 7-5. Taylor, Ruchala and Colin Topol each had a hit. Topol had two RBI, while Tuma and Ruchala each drove in a run. Trevor Jaloszynski and Taylor each stole two bases. Roucka took the loss in relief. Pieniazek started the game.

Willowbrook, which was 4-3 through late last week, opened West Suburban Conference Gold Division play this week with a three-game series against Hinsdale South. The finale of the series is scheduled today in Villa Park ahead of the Warriors playing Proviso West in a WSC crossover game Saturday in Villa Park as well.

“It’s been great overall,” said Olson. “Overall, our effort and approach and enthusiasm have been fantastic. We still have a lot of things we can clean up and we will.

That will come with time. Some of the early struggles we’ve had with things is the result of being out in the cold weather. If you are getting the effort and enthusiasm like we are, you can’t go wrong there.”

Olson also has been impressed with junior center fielder Sophia Hawkins, another three-year player (three-year starter). “She’s been doing a fantastic job,” he said.

Shortstop Anna Ruffolo and infielder Jessica Krause also have been key contributors, along with third baseman-catcher Isabel Aramburu. Ruffolo, Krause and Arambu-

ru are three freshmen Olson referenced earlier.

“It’s nice when you have good senior leadership and good young players, plus girls such as Sophia Hawkins and Maddie Biancalana, who is another two-year starter,” said Olson.

Addison Trail was slated to play Fenton Friday and Maine South on Saturday. “We have a pretty good week with games if the weather holds,” said Olson, whose team also was scheduled to play earlier in the week. “The rain and the cold have hurt us. Going south and getting games cancelled was tough. Being on the road for four or five days with 14 teenagers and bad weather, you start to run out of things to do after a while (laughs).”

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team won its first three matches of the 2018 season against Glenbard North, Hoffman Estates and Chicago St. Patrick.

In a 25-18, 25-19 non-conference win over Glenbard North, Zielinski had eight kills, three blocks and two aces. Michael Pudlo had six kills and three blocks. Jacob Grygo had 21 assists and six kills, while Justin Werderitch had four kills. Mikey Strycharz had three kills, seven digs and two aces. Bryan Florian had seven digs, three aces and two assists.

In a 25-12, 27-25 win over Hoffman Estates in non-conference play, Strycharz had six kills, five digs and two aces. Werderitch had six kills as well. Zielinski had five kills and five digs, while Grygo had 17 assists, four kills and one ace. Michael Tulke had six digs.

In the Blazers’ 18-25, 25-15, 2520 win over St. Patrick in another non-conference affair, Grygo had 21 assists, 10 kills, two blocks and one ace. Zielinski had eight kills and two aces. Werderitch had five kills. Strycharz had three kills and six digs.

Pudlo had four kills and two aces, while Joe Mosny had one kill, three blocks and one ace and Florian had 10 digs.

Addison Trail is coming off a 2017 season where it went 21-17 overall

and 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play. The Blazers won a regional title and lost to Lake Park in the sectional semifinals.

Top returners for the Blazers include senior Grygo, a 6-5 setter, who had 623 assists, 200 kills and 150 digs a year ago. Florian is a 5-9 senior defensive specialist who finished with 125 digs last year. Zielinski is a 5-11 senior right-side hitter who had 132 digs, 129 kills, 29 aces and 23 blocks in 2017. Pudlo is a 6-3 senior outside hitter who had 104 kills and 13 aces despite missing half the season.

Strycharz is a 5-10 senior outside hitter-defensive specialist who had 122 digs, 65 kills and 13 aces.

Senior Michael Chiaramonte is a 5-10 outside hitter-defensive specialist who was injured last year. He finished with 78 digs and 21 aces as a sophomore. Werderitch is a 6-3 outside-middle who had 11 kills and 14 blocks as a sophomore. Mosny is a 6-0 junior middle blocker who had 11 kills and nine blocks last season.

Christopher Garcia is a 5-9 senior defensive specialist who finished with 37 digs and Tulke is a 5-8 junior defensive specialist who had 27 digs.

John Baumgrartner is a 6-3 middle blocker and a key newcomer to the team.

Coach Chad Grant returns 10 players; seven being in their third years on the varsity squad with Grygo headlining the group.

“Jacob is one of the best setters in the state and we have several returning hitters to complement him on offense,” he said.

Fenton softball team off to 3-0 start Bison getting back into swing of things after weather-forced spring trip cancellation

It’s been a good start to the season for the Fenton softball team.

Through late last week the Bison were 3-0 after wins against Lake View, North Grand and Chicago Academy by a combined count of 65-5.

Fenton downed Lake View 20-3, North Grand 21-0 and Chicago Academy 24-2.

“Our young pitching has been really solid,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello.

Sophomore Gianna Mendoza earned wins against Lake View and Chicago Academy, while freshman Cynthia Ibarra was the winner against North Grand. Freshman Ashley Marshall has pitched in relief and had 10 strikeouts in four innings, while freshman Claira Panos has nine strikeouts in four innings.

On the offensive side, sophomore Joni Lucas and junior Isa Lozada lead the team with three home runs each, while senior Rose Riley has two home runs. Sophomore Alyssa Texta has one homer.

• Volleyball

Lozada leads the team with 13 RBI, while Lucas has nine. Sophomore Ashley Milano is tied with Lozada for the team lead in runs scored with eight, while seniors Dorothy Novello and Riley each have scored seven times.

While Fenton is 3-0 it had five games washed out on a planned Champaign trip that was scrapped due to snow and rain in the area there. “That cost us five games that would have been very valuable for our young team in terms of team bonding,” said Mello.

However, Mello did see a silver lining with the cancellation. “I do have to compliment them on how well they responded to the trip being cancelled,” he said. “We came out and had three really good practices. That really is a testament to our leadership. Isa Lozada is the girl I look to as our captain, but another girl who has been huge in terms of leadership is senior Ryan DeLaTorre. She was one of our basketball captains and really has been a great leader this whole softball season so far.

It is great seeing her interact with all the young kids on the team.”

Fenton recently was bolstered by the returns of senior Cristina Villegas and junior Payton Pugilese from injury.

The Bison were slated to play Elk Grove earlier this week and are scheduled to face Wheaton Academy today and Addison Trail Friday night.

Pudlo is returning from an injury that kept him out of the basketball season. “Michael is physical and can play both outside and middle, but it will take him some time to get back to his normal level of play,” said Grant.

Werderitch filled in at middle last year due to injury, but will move to his natural outside position this year. “Justin has a lot of potential,” said Grant.

Grant likes the way the team’s serving, passing and defense are shaping up. “I am confident in our serving, passing and defense,” he said. “We return several solid defenders who will push each other. We will need to spread the ball around on offense in order to be effective. It will take a total team

effort to replace the offense of Colton Noel, who graduated. There should be a lot of competition for playing time this year. We have several different lineups I would feel comfortable with if we had to play today. It’s just a matter of figuring out who fits together the best and who plays what position.”

Grant said the team is aiming for another strong playoff run. “As always, our expectation is to be competitive come playoff time,” he said.

Willowbrook boys volleyball The Willowbrook boys volleyball team dropped a recent non-conference match to Glenbard East. Nick Cookingham had 19 assists and three kills for Willowbrook, while Tim Keefe had 12 kills. Joe Cavazos had five kills and Buddy Martens finished with four digs.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Lombard man had been charged with Criminal Damage to Property, a Class 4 Felony, for allegedly cutting down power lines to several houses in unincorporated Lombard. Austin Michalik 31, of 1S045 3rd Street, appeared in Bond Court, where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $30,000 with 10% to apply.

On March 27, DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Meyers Road in unincorporated Lombard for a call of someone allegedly cutting power lines to three area homes. Several minutes later the deputies located Michalik allegedly walking down Roosevelt Road with

tree trimmers in his hands. It is alleged that Michalik used the tree trimmers to cut the power lines to the residences.

“The allegations against Mr. Michalik go beyond vandalism,” Berlin said. “His alleged actions posed a public safety threat not only to anyone who may have come across the downed live power lines but also to the homes whose service was disrupted.”

Michalik’s next court appearance was scheduled for April 2, in front of Judge Brian Telander.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

GreenMan Theatre actors excited to enlist in Monstrous Regiment GreenMan Theatre has assembled a cast of eleven actors from around the area to appear in their upcoming spring production of Monstrous Regiment. The play is adapted by Chicago area playwright and actor Chris Hainsworth from a 2003 novel by popular fantasy author Terry Pratchett.

The satirical novel follows the adventures of Polly Perks, who enlists in the army, along with an unlikely band of young recruits, and is promptly sent to the front lines. The story is part of Pratchett’s Discworld fantasy series. Pratchett ended up writing 41 novels based on this fictional world. The series has been

creative show and that she is thrilled to have the opportunity to breathe life into the character of Polly. Allison Porschakin, who plays Carborundum, the troll, also is excited to be in a show with such an amazing cast. In one scene, her troll character almost gets into a fight with another monster! Brendan Mertens, who plays a variety of characters, including Death, notes that fans of the book will recognize Death as a recurring character in other Discworld books, although he has only a small role in Monstrous Regiment.

Asked about her role, Elizabeth Ley commented, “Who wouldn’t want to play a witty, supercilious vampire!?” And for Marnie Warner, another huge fan of Pratchett, the opportunity to appear in Monstrous Regiment was a big enough incentive to get her out of her comfort zone; this will be Marnie’s first appearance in a non-musical.

Performance details Monstrous Regiment runs three weekends at GreenMan’s performance space at 232 S. York St. in Elmhurst. The production opens Friday, April 13 and closes April 29. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
