Bond set at $75,000 for suspect accused of threatening Glenbard East students DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced on Friday, April 19, that bond had been set for a former Glenbard East High School Student accused of sending a threatening message to a current female Glenbard East High School student. Jaris McCullum, 18, appeared in Bond Court Thursday afternoon where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $75,000 with 10% to apply. McCullum has been charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 Felony and one count of Harassment through Electronic Communications, also a Class 4 Felony.

On April 15, 2019, the Lombard Police Department received information regarding a threatening message a female Glenbard East High School student received via FaceBook Messenger. It is alleged that McCullum sent a message to the student threatening to show up at the school and kill her boyfriend and harm her.

It is alleged that in the message, McCullum posted: “I really shoot,” “pull up at east rn I still got my card,” and “I got mfs who dnt like u that’ll pay to get rid of u, And Im’ takin that money, So u better hide mf bc I promise I’ll get you.”

It is further alleged that the message contained a photo of McCullum wearing all black holding what appears to be a firearm. After receiving the message, the student alerted the Dean of Students at Glenbard East High School. The school then reported the alleged threat to the Lombard Police Student Resource Officer. An investigation into the matter led to McCullum who was taken into custody on Thursday, April 18.

“Tomorrow [April 20] marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most horrific events in American history, the Columbine school shootings, an anniversary that serves as a sad reminder to us all of us about the pos-

sible dangers that unfortunately, our children and school personnel must consider each day,” Berlin said. “As I have said in the past, any threat or even the hint of a threat to our schools will be fully investigated and anyone suspected of such behavior will be held accountable. I would like to

thank the recipient of this threatening message for doing the right thing and alerting authorities and I urge all students to follow her lead – if you see or hear something, say something.

“I would like to thank the Lombard Police Department for their work in identifying the defendant in this case.”

“Our educational facilities should be a place of learning and safety,” Newton said. “It is unfortunate that some think they can disrupt fellow students’ learning opportunity with threats to their safety while in school.

Nursing homes ‘already in crisis’ Report says Medicaid funding shortfalls causing some to close

Since March 2014, 20 state-licensed skilled-care nursing homes have closed for financial reasons, while many of those continuing to serve the state’s neediest elderly populations face staffing shortages and operating deficits caused by diminishing state government investment.

Nursing home advocates warn that the industry is already in crisis, and a continuance of this trend could mean an unavailability of care for Illinois’ aging population within a decade.

“These facilities are closing, and I can tell you more are going to close,” said Pat Comstock, executive director of the Health Care Council of Illinois, a nursing home advocacy group. “It’s happening because we have a situation in Illinois where they can no longer financially survive.”

The pace of closures has quickened in recent years, with five skilled-care nursing facilities—those that house the sickest and most vulnerable—closing from 2014 to 2016, six closing in each of 2017 and 2018, and three already shutting their doors in 2019, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

To fully quantify the issues facing the industry and their possible solutions, HCCI commissioned a study conducted by the business advisory firm Plante Moran, the Claude Pepper Center of Florida State Univer-

sity, and managed care Medicaid expert Meredith Duncan.

The 85-page report states Illinois’ Medicaid ranks 49th in the nation for Medicaid reimbursement rates, and nursing homes lose approximately $15,000 per year—or an average of $41 per day—for each Medicaid-funded patient. Those shortages create a $649 million single-year funding shortfall across the industry in Illinois.

While the story of the state’s disinvestment in nursing homes is largely a financial one, Comstock said facility closures take a human toll affecting communities across the state.

“One of the really sad things about this is that when you close facilities, you create access problems for the elderly and you create additional challenges for families,” she said.

“And also, we know that when the elderly who are very sick, if they get displaced or moved to another location, it’s really difficult on them and some of them just don’t survive that displacement.”

Far behind neighboring states The senior advocacy group AARP detailed in its own report earlier this year that Illinois nursing homes have the worst patient-to-staff ratio in the nation, leading to the second-worst rate for administering antipsychotic drugs to sedate patients without a psychiatric diagnosis.

“Inadequate staffing at many Illinois nursing homes leaves residents neglected, malnourished, suffering from bed sores or worse,” said Ryan Gruenenfelder, director of advocacy and outreach for AARP. The poor staffing ratio persists despite state mandates on minimum hours of care per patient at state-licensed nursing facilities. Senate Bill 1510, which passed the Senate by a 39-19 vote on April 10, would require informed consent if an antipsychotic drug is to be administered, and would establish fines for nursing homes which fail to meet mandated staffing levels.

But the HCCI said the legislation fails to address the root cause of staffing shortages.

“Medicaid rates have failed to keep pace with the actual cost of care in Illinois,” said HCCI Vice President Amanda Ginther, adding that a statewide worker shortage also makes it difficult to fill staffing positions.

The state provides 27 percent of funding for approximately 740 intermediate- and skilled-care homes it licenses. The facilities themselves provide 23 percent of their funding through a pair of taxes on beds, which legally cannot be passed on to residents. The federal government provides the other half of funding by matching state and provider contributions.

“As a result, Illinois also has the lowest average total direct hours per patient day at 3.4169 hours. Providers in the state cannot afford to provide the staffing levels that providers like those in Michigan can afford,” the report said.

Like all state-funded entities, nursing homes were adversely affected by a multi-year budget impasse which included a temporary funding cut executed by former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration in 2015.

“We never really recovered from that,” Comstock said.

In recent years, Illinois has promoted nursing home alternatives such as aging-in-place programs, and seniors often stay in their own homes or move to lighter care facilities until their health deteriorates to a point that they need nursing home care.

While the HCCI supports age-inplace programs, the shift to a more Medicaid-dependent population in many nursing homes means an increase in homes operating at significant funding deficits.

In 2016 alone, nursing homes where more than half the patients are covered by Medicaid each lost, on average, $765,000 the report stated.

“This shows that even contribution margins from private, Medicare, and other payers cannot fully subsidize Medicaid losses,” the report said.

The state’s recent minimum wage increase to $15 per hour by 2025 will add another burden to cash-strapped homes, Comstock said, although the HCCI did not oppose the measure because it believes increased wages will lead to enhanced care.

Two important pieces of consumer protection legislation have advanced on separate tracks through the Illinois State Senate and House of Representatives. Senate Bill 1719, better known as the Keep Internet Devices Safe or KIDS Act, passed out of the Illinois Senate with bi-partisan support. The bill, sponsored by State Sen. Cristina Castro (D-Elgin) protects the privacy and physical safety of Illinois citizens from the risks posed - particularly those to children - by internet-connected devices’ use of microphones that listen and collect our most personal information.

“The legislation we passed is an important step towards protecting the digital privacy of Illinoisans by arming citizens with more information about the technology we use every day,” said Castro. “We have a right to know if and when companies are listening to our conversations. I applaud my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle

The KIDS Act was created as a result of an FBI warning asking parents to be more cautious when utilizing Internet- connected devices in their homes.

While SB1719 passed the Senate 3914, the Illinois House overwhelmingly approved HB3358, the Data Transpar-

ency and Privacy Act, which requires companies that operate websites and online services to be transparent about the types of personal information they collect. The bill, sponsored by State Representative and House Assistant Majority Leader Art Turner (D-Chicago), also gives Illinois citizens the ability to request what categories of their personal information were disclosed, the categories and number of the companies they were disclosed to, and allows Illinois consumers to opt-out of having their personal information sold.

“The bill is simple,” Turner said.

“Companies that collect and sell Illinois citizens’ data should at least tell us what they’re doing and give us an option to opt-out. Companies should want to be transparent so that they can start to rebuild consumer trust.

As states and jurisdictions around the country, including Illinois, continue to modify their marijuana laws, the web site DriversEd.com, an online driving school, last week released its 2019 Cannabis and Cars Report. The study examines Americans’ concerns, experiences and perspectives on behind-the-wheel marijuana use.

The survey found that 58% of Americans believe that legalized recreational marijuana use would lead to increased danger on roads and 91% believe marijuana can impair a person’s driving ability. Meanwhile, 21% of U.S. drivers admit to having driven while high from marijuana.

“Driving under the influence of marijuana is dangerous and deadly, as well as illegal – even in states where medicinal and recreational cannabis use is legalized,” said Laura Adams, a safety and education analyst at DriversEd.com. “Like alcohol, marijuana impairs a driver’s judgment, motor coordination and reaction time. Risks are amplified even more when marijuana and alcohol are mixed together.”

Among the study’s additional findings: • 82% of Americans say that if a driver arrived to pick them up and they knew for a fact that the driver was high from marijuana, they would

account for only 9.9% of its workforce according to a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Most young women never consider a non-traditional career option simply because they have not had the opportunity to experience it.

Conroy responds to death of DuPage County child

After a DuPage County toddler’s death from complications arising from hot water scald burns, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) passed legislation out of the House to mandate additional safety features on water heaters.

“For the past year, I have been working with a Naperville family who tragically lost their little girl in a hot water scalding accident that never should have happened,” said Conroy. “I am in awe of this family’s

Students from several DuPage County high schools displayed their green building projects to the public at the 13th annual Sustainable Design Challenge on Tuesday, held at DuPage County’s Administration Building in Wheaton.

Sponsored by DuPage County Stormwater Management, SCARCE coordinates the annual event, which encourages students to construct building and landscape models using environmental and water-friendly design practices. Participating high schools included not only York Community High School in Elmhurst, but also Wheaton Warrenville South, Glenbard East in Lombard, Metea Valley in Aurora, Waubonsie Valley in Aurora, Addison Trail, Hinsdale South and Hinsdale Central.

“This year’s we saw the highest number of high schools register for the Sustainable Design Challenge than any year in the past,” said DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chairman Jim Zay. “This proves how important this learning opportunity is for our local high schools and for County staff and elected officials who talk to the student presenters.”

Students discussed the design elements that made their building sustainable, including renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines and water conservation elements such as native plant landscaping, rain barrels and other green infrastructure for stormwater management. The DuPage County Board will recognize the top designs at an upcoming meeting.

Kay McKeen, founder and executive director of SCARCE, credits much of the popularity of this event to schools advancing science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) education.

“We have great local teachers who encourage the students to pursue STEM fields, both in and out of the classroom,” she said. “They get the students excited about it, and this event wouldn’t be as successful without them.”

During the event, students also learned about sustainable practices throughout DuPage County’s campus, including a green roof, rain garden and restored wetland, as well as several sustainable building features at the DuPage Health Department’s Community Center.

pending status due to delays in the state’s processing of long-term benefits applications. During this period, the care provider must cover all costs.

“We’re in situations where we’ve been providing care for years without any compensation,” Comstock said, adding that legislation recently passed to expedite application processing has not yet yielded satisfactory results.

Reimbursement delays have also become more prevalent since the state adopted a privatized Medicaid managed care system in 2011, the report said.

That system uses private insurance companies known as managed care organizations, or MCOs, to coordinate each patient’s care. The state releases funds to MCOs at a statute-specified daily rate, and they pass it on to nursing homes that apply for reimbursement for the Medicaid-covered care they provide.

But according to a report from Meredith Duncan, one of the state’s leading legal experts on managed care, provider claims are often denied or delayed without explanation, and MCOs often refuse to pay state-mandated late payments. Often, Duncan said, the provider’s only recourse is a time-consuming legal process that often costs more than the amount recovered.

Because of that, many providers have been forced to triple the size of their billing departments and hire lawyers, consultants and lobbyists, further diverting resources that would be better directed at filling patient-care staffing shortages.

“I think a really big concern is that the destabilization of nursing homes in general is really going to put us in a difficult position when the baby boomers start to age into the system of needing more long-term care,” Ginther said.

“We’re not going to have the long-term support available for them.”

The HCCI has proposed a series of legislative fixes, the cornerstone of which is a $100 million increase in state funding to skilled- and intermediate-care nursing homes for the upcoming fiscal year. The federal government would match that number, bringing the total added investment to $200 million.

The HCCI is optimistic about that request, as Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s proposed budget includes an estimated $390 million in added revenue from a tax on MCOs which would bring more money into the Medicaid system.

Harston said MCOs are working with the state on the MCO tax proposal in an effort to “continue to stabilize the Medicaid program.”

Senate Bill 42, carried by Oak Park Democrat state Sen. Don Harmon, passed committee unanimously as a vehicle to distribute the added funding.

It will be amended once it is known if any new funding will be realized, Comstock said.

The $200 million, however, would make up less than one-third of the anticipated $649 million one-year industrywide funding shortfall.

“All that $200 million is really going to do is keep our infrastructure from falling apart,” Comstock said.

“So we’ve got to continue to work with Illinois to revamp the system and create a reimbursement methodology that allows our services to the frail elderly in Illinois to be sustained. So this is just the beginning for us.”

The HCCI is also in talks with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services to offset increases to the minimum wage as it moves toward $15 per hour by 2025. Comstock said the goal is to increase the Medicaid reimbursement rate as the wage increases, which could be accomplished through a reallocation of funds in the existing budget.

In a statement, IDHFS Director of Communications John Hoffman said the department, “has been discussing anticipated costs with health care associations, other stakeholders and sister agencies such as the Department of Human Services and Department on Aging, to ensure that the raised minimum wage promotes quality care for Medicaid members.”

The HCCI is also backing Senate Bill 43 to remove the managed care enrollment mandate for Medicaid patients at nursing homes, putting them back in the fee-for-service program.

The bill failed to pass the Senate by the April 12 deadline, and MCOs oppose the legislation which “limits how members access care coordination,” Harston said.

“It is important to collectively work together to strengthen the continuum of care rather than carving out proportions of the population,” he said.

An investigation, led by the DuPage County Forest Preserve Police, into the alleged attack on a 16-yearold girl while she was walking on a trail at Timber Ridge Forest Preserve in West Chicago has been found to be a hoax.

As investigators were questioning the alleged victim for more details about the alleged attack on April 16, 2019, she admitted to falsely reporting the crime and fabricating all of the details of the attack. The teen confessed that the injuries she allegedly sustained from the attack were self-inflicted.

The matter was turned over to the Forest Preserve District’s police juvenile department.

The unemployment rate in Illinois climbed one-tenth of a point to 4.4 percent in March as the state recorded a net loss of 2,300 jobs, the Illinois Department of Employment Security said April 18.

According to preliminary, seasonally-adjusted numbers, the biggest job losses occurred in the professional and business services sector, which lost 4,200 jobs, transportation and utilities, which shed 3,000 jobs, and the construction industry, where employment was down by 1,600 jobs.

Those losses were partially offset by job gains in manufacturing, financial activities, leisure and hospitality, and other services.

Meanwhile, the number of people counted as unemployed in March grew 1.1 percent from February, to 284,400. That was 1.3 percent higher than in March 2018.

Nationally, the U.S. economy added 196,000 jobs in March,

while the nation’s unemployment rate held steady at 3.8 percent.

Despite the overall loss of jobs in Illinois, IDES said the state still saw a net gain in employment for the thee-month period from January through March. And the total job count for Illinois in March was up by 47,400 compared to a year ago.

“This administration has begun the hard work of restoring fiscal sanity to our state so that we can build a thriving economy for all Illinoisans,” Deputy Gov. Dan Hynes said about the numbers in a news release.

Erin Guthrie, acting director of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, said Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration is working to turn the state’s job market around.

“Governor Pritzker has made training and preparing the workforce for the jobs of tomorrow a priority, and I am excited to work with him on achieving that goal,” she said in a statement.

State Rep. Mazzochi reports on ‘Drug Affordability Act’ My committee hearing comments on House Bill 3493 recently went viral. The bill’s “Prescription Drug Affordability Act” title sounds nice in theory, but in practice proposed taxing pharmaceutical manufacturers (based on their total revenues as a percentage of the state market) to fund a new state bureaucracy, appointed by political insiders, who would divine a “fair” price for thousands of medications. I am passionate about increasing access to medicines for all people – especially those with limited means – but we don’t need another opportunity to fund insider corruption. The law couldn’t actually deliver more affordable prices; instead, it tried to impose illegal price controls, and gave manufacturers an excuse to raise prices due to their increased compliance costs.

In Illinois, we initially spend $1.9 billion on pharmaceuticals. This includes $286 million for diabetes; $212 million for HIV/AIDS; $199 million for asthma; $105 million for arthritis; and $102 million on cancer drugs. Thankfully, Illinois Medicaid and Medicare and veterans patients already get some of the lowest drug pricing nationwide.

Why then do we still feel so out of control when it comes to pricing?

One reason is the extent to which states have surrendered their power and control to the federal government.

If we want to lower consumer costs, we need more market competition and private-party accountability at every level of the supply and distribution chain. Unfortunately federal law is rife with opportunities to exploit the market to consumers’ disadvantage. For example, some companies exploited the Orphan Drug Act’s noble purpose of incentivizing new drugs for rare diseases with a market exclusivity period. They enticed the FDA to give a monopoly to old drugs already on the market. It took years of using the federal law tools available – patent, antitrust, FDA regulatory, NAFTA unfair competition,

whistleblower claims, and Federal Trade Commission actions—to undo this.

The federal restrictions have also created a market where the published price of a drug is rarely the actual price charged at the pharmacy. The State of Illinois alone receives over $900 million dollars—half of what the state spends on drugs—in the form of manufacturer rebates. There is an incredible amount of rebate money floating around in both state and private health care systems.

Most of these rebates are negotiated by pharmacy benefit managers, insurers, drug manufacturers and pharmacies to lower the price of prescription drugs.

A resident whistleblower alerted me to one area of pharmacist benefit managers (abbreviated “PBM”) abuse. PBMs are supposed to negotiate lower prices for their customers, and pass the savings along to lower patient premiums. Many instead used complicated contract provisions to hide the manufacturer rebates; and avoid audit transparencies. I drafted HB 3187 to end this practice. The language empowers customers to render these types of contract terms unacceptable; void; and unenforceable in the State of Illinois. My solution – which didn’t require the creation of a new state bureaucracy – received strong bipartisan support from the members in our committee.

It will help bring real-world savings to consumers.

There are ways we can do things better. I am grateful for the opportunity to put my knowledge and experience to work on your behalf, and to making HB 3187 become law.

Cullerton (D-Villa Park) passed Senate Bill 1214 last week, which requires the Department of Public Health to ensure that those who draw blood employ the most current methods available when treating individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Medical visits can be stressful for

all of us, but especially for people with developmental disabilities,” Cullerton said. “We need to ensure that communication and sensory issues are taken into account when medical professionals complete procedures such as blood draws.”

Senate Bill 1214 was an initiative of Michael Baker, the parent a young adult son with autism.

“I would like to thank Senator Tom Cullerton for taking up this legislation in the Senate and listening to the healthcare needs of my son with

autism,” Baker said. “I hope that this legislation to improve training and equipping of healthcare professionals on how to draw blood from all children and adults with developmental disabilities in a safe and comfortable manner, will lead to more progress in the quality of healthcare for people like my son.”

Senate Bill 1214 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and will move to the House for consideration.

ers who need help tackling Alzheimer’s disease. The best part about this bill is that it would generate private funds - which ensures this initiative doesn’t contribute to Illinois’ fiscal woes.

As an individual who has experienced the hardships of this disease, I ask my fellow Illinoisians to urge their elected officials to pass House Bill 2673 and to keep the needs of families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s at a forefront. Metro area’s population losses symptomatic of statewide trend

Census numbers released April 18 show that for the first time in seven years, every major metropolitan area in the state saw population decline between July 2017 and July 2018.

The numbers give a county and metro-area look at population changes, and provide more detail on the statewide numbers the Census Bureau released for the same time period last December, which showed Illinois lost about 45,000 that year.

To Bryce Hill, research analyst at the conservative think tank Illinois Policy Institute, the detailed numbers released are no shock.

“This is something that was expected,” Hill said. “But it is concerning that all of the state’s metro areas are losing population.”

According to Hill’s analysis, most of the population loss is due to outmigration—more people leaving the state than arriving.

The Chicago metro area, which extends beyond Cook County into the collar counties and parts of southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Indiana, had the greatest raw number decline of more than 22,000 people.

In Cook County alone, more than 24,000 people left.

Hill said the reason Cook County had a greater loss than the surrounding metro area is because of a continuing, longtime trend of people moving from the city to the nearby suburbs.

While the population drop of 970 people in the Danville metro area was smaller by comparison, it was the fourth worst decline of any metro area in the country at 1.25 percent.

In all, only 16 of Illinois’ 102 counties saw population increases. A few of them, like Grundy (359), Monroe (176), and Jasper (71), are downstate, which Hill attributed to the natural result of births still outpacing deaths in those areas, rather than people moving there.

In most other places, Hill said, the gap between births and deaths is closing, and migration into Illinois is not enough to make up for the people leaving.

“As the population ages,” Hill said, “outmigration is going to become a bigger and bigger issue.”

While the Policy Institute cited the recent numbers as signs of Illinois’ poor labor market, high tax burden and reckless spending, others say the reasons for population shifts are more complicated.

It was in the wee morning hours; I was summoned from sleep by a grinding and screeching sort of noise that is universally recognized as the sound of a garbage truck doing its business.

Panic set in. We hadn’t pulled our garbage to the curb. Did we, gulp, miss garbage day?

I was now wide awake approximately 90 minutes before my regular getting up time. If that’s not a way no one wants to start their day I’m not sure what is.

But back to garbage day, or in my case Garbage! Day! (Oh no!)

Was it ours? I hoped not. I wracked my brain. What day was it? Was it garbage day for us?

But our days are different – even when we live across the street or next door to one another.

One would think garbage would be a more coordinated effort: with everyone having their pick up on the same day. But life isn’t coordinated like that. Neither is garbage.

There are different garbage companies with different schedules.

We are free to pick our vendor of choice. Free to make our own garbage. And apparently free will is running rampant in my neighborhood. Either that or we have a lot of garbage.

Maybe both.

Garbage trucks frequent my street nearly every day. I see and hear them all the time. We do our best to remember our allotted day and at the assigned time we haul our trash down to the curb and the truck picks it up and carries it away to be forgotten and never thought of

again.

Wouldn’t it be nice if life was like the garbage? We’d pick a day and wheel our proverbial garbage down to the curb so it could be carted off and forever forgotten. The garbage truck would arrive and haul away all our mistakes, regrets, worries, burdens and disappointments leaving us with an empty can to refill in the coming week.

Wouldn’t it be nice? Sure it would, but real-life garbage isn’t as easy to get rid of as an empty can of chicken noodle soup. It doesn’t work that way.

Real life garbage is stickier than that. It hangs on. We have to live with our choices and decisions and move forward one step at a time.

And, during the times when our garbage can feels overly full or too

heavy to carry down to the curb, I think we perhaps should give ourselves some slack and realize we aren’t the only ones in the neighborhood with garbage.

When our can is so full the lid won’t close, we can look across the street and see that our neighbor is in the same situation. It may feel like we are the only one with garbage or with too much garbage or with too much garbage to deal with, but we aren’t.

That sort of thinking is a waste of time and quite simply fodder for the rubbish pile.

Traveling opens your mind to so much more

“Why do you like going to Europe?” was the question posed to me recently. Interesting query.

Most people express excitement about traveling and take it for granted that Europe is wonderful.

Yet it’s good pause and ponder why we do the things we do.

When I was in college, I took an Art History class (to fulfill the art requirement; I’d rather learn about art than attempt to do it) and something ignited within me. The teacher was a young gal who had spent time studying in Italy. Her stories solidified in me that one

language, the way of life. I am humbled and awash in gratitude to stand before the David in Florence, By the Mona Lisa in Paris, the Pieta in KELLY the Vatican City.

We’ve also been to France and England together, and back last May to Italy and we go again this May. Last trip was Tuscany, this time Umbria, the rural countryside outside of Assisi. Traveling with my man has shown me to slow down and savor every morsel, every sense, to truly breathe it all in.

Traveling is not about seeing all the highlights in the guide books.

We discover that every cathedral is a work of art. Every building still standing after hundreds of years is worthy of reverence. And the countryside is utterly gorgeous too. Hiking we will go.

So if I have to answer in one word why I like to go to Europe, that reply is BEAUTY. And that is why I like to travel anywhere, including here in our glorious United States. Beauty feeds my soul.

Beauty is everywhere, I do not have leave town for it. I have beauty in my home and out my window. But seeing beauty is new places lights me up. I love going where I have never been before.

Not everyone enjoys travel, I get that. But I do believe everyone needs beauty, in whatever way that appeals to the beholder.

Beauty could be taking care of

your grandkids. Beauty could be playing with your pet. Beauty could be helping people in your line of work.

We all need something that stimulates us, that makes us see that the world is more than we realize. Travel does that for me.

Do I have to go far to experience awe and wonder? Nope. It’s everywhere. I am more open to seeing the breathtaking beauty in my own town because my eyes and heart have been unlocked by travel. Expanding one’s horizons can happen in many ways.

Beauty also applies to other humans. By leaving the familiarity of home, I’ve realized our common humanity. I have not been all across the world, but in England, Ireland, Korea, and eleven countries in Europe, I have witnessed we are one people.

Language, skin, customs, and culture may differ but we love, laugh, and cry all the same. We all need beauty. Or at least I do.

It breaks me open. It expands my soul. So for today that is my answer as to why I love to travel.

Villa Park’s Community Garden plots are available now purchase for the season. Anyone who has a green thumb or wants to try their hand at gardening is welcome to purchase a plot. Garden Plots will be available for planting starting mid-May and the complete fall clean-up needs to be done by October 31. The Garden Plots and are located at Westmore Park (between Westmore and Biermann off of Plymouth). The fee to reserve a 10’ x 10’ plot is just $10. In 2010, 18-month-old Mikayla King died as a result of burn injuries after three seconds of accidental exposure to scalding hot water. Mikayla’s family successfully sued the American Water Heater Company for creating a dangerous condition as a re-

sult of not including an anti-scalding device. Mikayla’s family has since advocated for the required use of anti-scalding safety valves in water heaters to prevent future injuries and accidents.

“I think it’s such a commonsense solution and it’s going to change peoples’ lives in ways they aren’t even going to know about,” said Mikayla’s mother, Jen King. “This is the kind of change I hope to see more of. Reaching across the aisle and putting children and families first.”

Addison Trail softball team defeats Morton

Blazers receiving contributions throughout roster; Pitching depth a key

Addison Trail softball coach Mark Olson has a varsity roster filled with players from all four grade levels.

And all four grade levels have been contributing to the early success of the Blazers, who checked in at 9-4 overall and 1-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action through late last week.

“We’re pretty happy,” said Olson.

“We’re coming of age quickly so far.

We start three freshmen and three sophomores. It’s been a little baptism by fire. They have responded pretty well. We’ve done a pretty good job on the mound. We’re not walking

a lot of batters. We’ve played pretty good defense and as cliché as it sounds we’ve also had timely hitting.

We’ve had everything you can think of.”

Addison Trail evened its conference mark at 1-1 with an 8-1 win against Morton recently. “It was 0-0 at one point going into the fourth.

They have a good pitcher,” said Olson. “We managed a couple of things and put the ball in play when we needed to and some good things happened.”

The Blazers started the conference season with a tough 5-3 loss to Leyden. “That was a situation where we might have given one away,” said Olson.

Olson noted the contributions have come from many sources. Sophomore shortstop Anna Ruffolo has been a key cog at the plate. “Anna is hitting the heck out of the ball,” he said.

Sophomore Isabel Aramburu helps the Blazers at catcher, while sophomore Jessica Krause is playing well at third base after playing second as a freshman last season. “Those three, Anna, Izzy and Jessica have been anchoring the heart of our order,” said Olson.

Junior Val Pentrelli has helped on offense and defense. “I have been really impressed with Val at the plate and defensively she has been great at first base,” said Olson.

The Willowbrook baseball team continued its winning ways inside the West Suburban Conference Gold Division.

The Warriors were recent 11-5 winners over District 88 neighbor Addison Trail to run their conference record to a perfect 7-0. Willowbrook opened the WSC Gold season with 2-0, 8-5 and 16-3 wins against Hinsdale South, as well as 6-0, 12-5 and 3-2 wins against Morton.

Willowbrook was scheduled to play the middle game of the Addison Trail series earlier this week and will head to Addison for the finale on Friday while also playing a three-game WSC Gold set against Proviso East this week. Willowbrook concludes an extremely busy week Saturday at home against York.

In the Addison Trail opener, Willowbrook broke open an early 1-1 stalemate with six runs in the second. Willowbrook had nine hits in the game.

Sam Tumility went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Jack Hines went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Jeremy Conforti went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Marshall McDonnell went 2-for-4.

Ryan Mintz and Trevor Jaloszynski each had an RBI. Tumilty doubled, while Conforti and Hines each had a triple. Willowbrook also was active on the basepaths with 10 stolen bases and no caught stealings. Hines and Scott Tumilty each had three steals, while Isaac Gaines had two.

Joey Guthrie was the winner. He went six innings and allowed two earned runs, while striking out five. Josh Roucka pitched the seventh inning.

Willowbrook then played to a 7-7 draw with Hinsdale Central in WSC crossover action. The tie put Willowbrook at 12-3-1 overall.

Willowbrook tied it with two runs in the seventh inning. The Warriors had 11 hits.

Anthony Yannotti went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Conforti had a hit and two RBI. Sam Tumilty, Scott Tumilty and Marshall McDonnell each recorded an RBI. Hines, Jaloszynski and Scott Tumilty each had a double.

Dax Meyer pitched the first four innings and struck out two. Jack Nilles went two innings and had one strikeout. Roucka pitched the seventh.

The two victories pushed the Bison to 11-6 overall. The win against Wheaton Academy put Fenton at 1-0 in conference play.

Coach Heather Petersen noted middle blocker Adam Gebala had some big blocks in the win against Wheaton Academy, while libero Tony Galeana had 15 digs in the Wheaton Academy contest and setter Tyler Ford had three kills and 20 assists. Outside hitter Jacek Gebala had five kills and two aces against Wheaton Academy.

Through late last week, Jacek Gebala was leading the team in kills with 118, while Adam Gebala had

68 and Nicholas Hanusiak had 44.

Adam Gebala was leading in blocks with 31, while Lucas Feddersen had 18 blocks and Ford had 17. Ford was tops on the team in aces with 23. Jacek Gebala had 20 aces, while Adam Gebala had 12. Galeana was leading the team in digs with 131. Ford had 69 and Hanusiak had 62.

Looking at the first 17 contests, Petersen pointed to team chemistry as a major key. “This team has great chemistry. We have a solid team all around,” she said. “When the other team shuts down one of our guys, someone picks up the slack. Even the guys not on the floor help so much from the sideline. Our game continues to improve every game and we enjoy playing those competitive teams.”

Fenton also has benefited from an improved block. “Our blocking has significantly improved,” she said.

“We struggled against a few teams where they had one strong player hurting us, but it motivated us to do something about it in practice.”

Petersen said the team has benefited from the recent play of Adam Gebala, Galeana, Ford and Jacek Gebala. “Adam is dominating the middle,” she said. “He knows the game well and helps us so much at the net. Tony is our libero and is the rock of our defense. He is vocal and a true leader for the team. Tyler is making plays that have come at critical moments. The team trusts him and he continues to contribute in any way he can. Jacek is our outside and rips quite the jump serve. He also is a key player in our offense.”

In addition to having strong chemistry, Petersen added her group falls into the high-character column as well. “These boys are a great group on and off the court,” she said. “They are competitive, work hard, want to improve and are just overall great kids. I also like how nothing has seemed to rattle them. They play to win.”

Fenton has contests scheduled with Waukegan and St. Francis this week.

Through the first five matches of the season, things were looking up for the Willowbrook boys tennis team.

In those five dual contests, the Warriors were 3-2 overall and 1-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

Willowbrook dropped a 7-0 non-conference match to neighbor Glenbard East and a 4-3 contest to Glenbard South.

Riverside-Brookfield, by a 5-2 count, Timothy Christian by a 4-3 score, and the conference opener against Morton (4-3).

“I will say tennis has really stepped up in DuPage County with everyone just getting better,” said Willowbrook coach Ed Delacruz. “That’s the reason for all the close matches.”

Willowbrook also recently won the Addison Trail quadrangular that was played under the lights.

Individually, junior Ben Cavka was 5-3 at No. 1 singles. Mark Lobdell was 6-2. “Mark is my utility player who can play singles and doubles,” noted Delacruz.

Drake DelValle went 3-0 at the Addison Trail quad, while Joe Garner was undefeated at No. 3 singles.

“Singles has been a huge plus,”

said Delacruz. “I’m still trying to figure out my doubles lineup where I have made a couple of changes.”

Delacruz noted the team hasn’t had a lot of practice time coming out of spring break where it could work on doubles.

The coach was complimentary of the team’s captains. “Our captains have really stepped up in regards to leading the underclassmen on the JV team to model what is expected in our tennis program,” said Delacruz, “as well as what to also strive for in the future to be on the varsity team.

The JV players are really buying in as well, which I have been really happy about.”

Willowbrook was scheduled to face Hinsdale South earlier this week in a WSC Gold contest.

The Willowbrook boys gymnastics team has been hard at work on the competition circuit of late.

The Warriors were 3-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action through late last week. That mark included a 137.40 to 135.70 win against Hinsdale South in a meet coach Caleb Strejc noted scores were a tad inflated due to high-bar misjudging.

At the York invite, Danny Saldana was ninth on floor and 10th on high bar, while Cooper Ross took sixth on horse. Collin Donaldson was seventh on horse. Brendan Bailey tied for ninth on horse, tied for 10th on rings and was fifth on parallel bars.

At the Hinsdale South invite, Saldana tied for fifth on floor, while Ross was fifth on pommel horse. Bailey was fifth on parallel bars.

Over at Hinsdale Central, Ross was

fifth on horse. Bailey was eighth on horse and ninth on parallel bars, while taking 10th in the all-around scoring.

Saldana was 10th on vault and ninth in the all-around.

“We’re doing well on pommel horse right now,” said Strejc. “At the Scroza invite at York, that was the first meet we had zero falls out of the five guys competing. It really came together on that event.”

Strejc calls it a close call between horse and floor exercise for where the team has improved the most thus far.

“The guys are continually making small improvements on the same horse rou-

tines they’ve had all year and are refining them,” he said. “As for floor, two of our guys will be adding some difficulty to their routines so hopefully that will increase scores several tenths.”

Strejc cited recent strong efforts from junior-varsity roster member Elkin Wells, as well as Ross. “Elkin is a JV guy who has stepped up recently,” he said. “One of our varsity members was out the last two meets and Elkin filled in for him and did a great job making sure our scores didn’t take much of a hit at all.

“Cooper also has stepped up. He has not missed a horse routine this year and
