Two new trustees elected to Villa Park Village Board Voters reject advisory question on fixing Lufkin pool

By Paul DelGuidice FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

Two new faces will join one incumbent as trustees on the Villa Park Board come May. Voters chose newcomers Kevin Patrick and Christine Murphy, along with incumbent David Cilella, in the Tuesday, April 2 election. Incumbent trustee Donald Kase was the odd-man out. Despite the hot-button issue of Lufkin Pool’s future appearing on the ballot (in the form of an advisory referendum) and the contested Board of Trustees race, voter turn-out was low: only about 13%. “I’m disappointed,” said Kase, “There is much more to being a Trustee than a single issue like Lufkin Pool. I just hope the new Board members realize that.” Patrick, the top vote-getter, finished with 1,406 votes (29.49%). Murphy, who will be the second woman on the Board, joining Cheryl Tucker, garnered 1,362 votes (28.57%). Cilella finished with 1,049 votes (22.0%) and Kase received 951 votes (19.95%.) The Lufkin Pool advisory, nonbinding question, “Do you support the village of Villa Park, Illinois, spending up to $1 million in new property taxes to fund repairs to Lufkin Pool, which would allow the village to safely reopen the pool?” was rejected 1,059 (52.66%) to 952 (47.34%). It was a non-binding question, meaning it was not an automatically done deal, the vote was only to advise Trustees and other Village officials of the public’s opinion. The Lufkin Pool question was

added to the ballot after the Village Board decided to stop funding the increased maintenance and repair costs of the pool in 2017. A vocal, dedicated group of residents ‘Friends of Lufkin Pool’ lobbied for the Village to fund the 64-year-old facility, with cost estimates between $200,000 and $600,000. The wording of the advisory question was seen as misleading by both sides: Pro-pool advocates felt the $1 mil-

lion figure and ‘new property tax’ wording was designed to scare voters. Those against spending any more Village funds on the aging pool indicated that the question did not mention the potentially short time the repairs would add to the useful life of the pool, estimated at three to five years, with no guarantees. “I have seen the pool first hand,” Cilella said, “It is past its useful

life and is unsafe. We shouldn’t be spending money on the ‘Band-Aids’ to temporarily fix it. We need to move on.” With the advisory question decided, the Village wasted no time in revisiting the earlier decision to demolish Lufkin Pool. Two agenda items were added to the Monday, April 8 meeting: A Motion to “untable” a previous Resolution appropriating money to pay for the

demolition of the pool and bath house facilities, and a Resolution to authorize a contract with American Demolition Corp. of Elgin in the amount of $77,700 for the dismantling of Lufkin Pool.
