Four candidates vie for three seats in Trustees race FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

National elections seem to get all the attention, but as the saying goes ‘all politics is local.’ The Consolidated General Election on April 4, 2017 could be characterized as ‘more local than most’ for Villa Park residents.

“I hope Villa Park voters turn out for this very important election,” said State Senator Thomas Cullerton (D23rd), who also lives in Villa Park, “We’ll be electing a new Village President, there are two referendum questions on the ballot, and don’t forget the three trustee seats.”

Cullerton, who served a term as Village President before winning election to the State Senate in 2010 began his public service as a Villa Park Trustee.

There are four residents running to fill the three open seats on the Village Board of Trustees. Two of the candidates are incumbents and two are long-time residents.

David Cilella David Cilella, who has lived in Villa Park for 29 years, cites his three-plus decades of experience in municipal work for Addison and Lombard as a David Cilella strength.

“I have a passion (working) for municipalities, I can make a difference,” Cilella said during the recent candidates forum.

Cilella plans on leveraging his municipal experience working for the Public Works departments of both neighboring communities. He retired from Lombard Public Works in 2013.

He has years of experience in paving, street sweeping and ‘everything in-

between.’ Infrastructure issues such as separation of legacy combined storm and sanitary sewer systems in parts of Villa Park are a main concern for the 63-year-old candidate.

Paying for such infrastructure needs is always a concern.

Cilella said he would work to make Villa Park more attractive to businesses. Falling back on his Public Works experience again, Cilella suggested efforts to beautify Villa Park would be one way to attract those businesses.

Nick Cuzzone Trustee Nick Cuzzone, an incumbent, was first elected in 2015 to serve the remaining two years left on John Davis’ term when Davis stepped down due to poor health. Nick Cuzzone The 32 year Villa Park resident also touched on making Villa Park more inviting to po-

tential businesses. Easing the permitting processes have been a focus of his tenure on the Board. He plans on continuing to work with Village staff to ensure permitting is done efficiently and is cost effective for both residents and potential businesses and developers. Cuzzone also noted that plans for a centralized pool and recreation center have been discussed in Villa Park for years.

With aging pools and disparate recreational facilities, such a modern structure would be “one of the larg-

est potential projects for the future.”

Renegades hockey club wins state championship On March 17, the Renegades High School Hockey Club – which is comprised of students from Addison Trail, Willowbrook, Fenton and Montini Catholic high schools – won the Illinois High School Hockey State Championship in the Combined Varsity Division. The team beat Glenbard Hockey 4-1.

The Renegades finished the season with a record of 37-0-1 and also won

the 2017 Suburban Division Cougar Cup. Addison Trail students who are members of the team are junior Nick D’Ambrose, junior Michael Krefft, junior Jack Muccianti, junior Vincenzo Raimondi and sophomore Blake Vaca. Players from Willowbrook include sophomore Trevor Behrendt, freshman Joseph Mazzone, senior Eric Molitor and senior Alex Wosilus.

WB names March recipient of 88’s Best Timothy Wagner has been named as Willowbrook’s March recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his outstanding work in performing arts/electives.

Wagner, a senior, was recognized during the March 20 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

As a student, Wagner has consistently pursued the most rigorous courses available at Willowbrook. At the conclusion of his high school career, he will have successfully completed 10 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses, as well as a multitude of Honors courses. Wagner also has been recognized as an AP Scholar and an Illinois State Scholar and has been a member of the Distinction Honor Roll each semester of his high school career. He is an inductee of Civitas (Social Studies Honor Society), Math Honor Society, Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society and International Thespian Society.

Beyond the classroom, Wagner is an active member of Willowbrook’s Concert Choir, CenterStage and multiple band groups. His passion for music is further demonstrated through his leadership as a Section Leader for Band and as a Bass Section Leader for Choir. He also is an active member of Theatre, having participated in 10 productions throughout his high school career, including as a cast member in this year’s fall musical, “Mary Poppins.” Wagner also participates in Interact Club and the MENTORS group (a program designed to train upperclassmen to mentor underclassmen through being mentored by adult men) and is Co-Captain of Speech Team.

Wagner is very involved outside of WBHS as well and recently completed the requirements to earn Eagle Scout status as a result of his project to assist students with special needs in learning how to scuba dive. He also serves as a National Youth Leadership Training program staff trainer through Boy Scouts of America. Wagner works closely with Diveheart, an organization whose mission is to build confidence, independence and self-esteem in the lives of children, adults and veterans with disabilities through scuba diving, scuba therapy and related activities.

Wagner also is a fine trombonist and is a member of Wind Ensemble and Marching Warriors. His contributions to the music department are great and go beyond just his talents.

Wagner is a leader and is always the first one willing to volunteer his help in many ways. He is truly one of District 88’s Best!”

“Every time I speak with Wagner, I am more amazed and impressed by him,” Mikesell said. “When speaking with him, you hear the passion he has for music. The desire to grow and share his musical talents and accomplishments are a true reflection of Wagner as a person. He carries these traits into the classroom, by challenging himself academically and finding success. His work outside of the classroom also is remarkable. Wagner is a remarkable young man, who encompasses a complete package of outstanding character, academic achievement and musical talent.”

Wagner will continue his education at Carthage College and has already been admitted into the Honors Program. He will major in music education and looks forward to a career as a choir teacher and a dive instructor.

his term expiring, Wagner decided to seek reelection because he feels that he has gotten over the learning curve and he can work even better with Village staff to accomplish goals for the residents.

“Things are clearer to me,” Wagner said at the candidates forum. “I think I would do a better job as a trustee in the next term.”

Village finances are always important, and Wagner noted that pension costs for police and firefighters were a big part of the village’s budget. To help pay these costs without additional taxes, Wagner proposes to ‘retool’ various zoning ordinances to attract more development to Villa Park.

Each of the three Trustees who win election will need to work with who-

ever the new Village President is.

With Deborah Bullwinkel deciding not to seek a second term as Village President, the only thing certain is there will be changes.

The three candidates for Village President are long-time resident and business owner Charles ‘Chuck’ Pickerill, Trustee Robert ‘Bob’ Taglia, who decided to run for the Presidency instead of seeking a 3rd term as Trustee and will be off the dais if he does not win the Village President’s position; and, Trustee Al Bulthuis. If Bulthuis does not win the President seat, he will still be a Trustee with his term expiring in 2019. If Bulthuis wins, however, an opening on the Board will occur. That seat would be filled by an appointee, who would also need approval by the Board.

Viewpoint Slices of life Most of us like to think of ourselves as glass-half-full types of people. Positive and optimistic and all that. I try to be positive.

Except in one key area where I have no choice or voice.

I blame my parents for my negativity. They both contributed equally to a situation I couldn’t change if I tried. To be fair, neither could they.

You might say it’s in my blood.

Literally. I am one of the 10 to 15 percent of the population whose blood is negative (versus positive).

This negativity is due to the absence of a certain marker in the blood called the Rh factor, which is a recessive and inherited trait.

The Rh factor was first discovered in the blood of Rhesus monkeys in 1940 (hence the name) and later in humans. Most humans have the factor. I do not.

For the most part, it’s no big deal. I’d never given it much thought. But then I went online and dangerously hit the Google and found a firestorm of theories – conspiracy and otherwise – as to how the difference between Rh-positive and negative came to be. Some of the more outlandish ideas involve an ancestry of extraterrestrials, angels or even lizards.

that might be nothing less than downright sinister and deadly?”

Human hybrids and ancient aliens who are downright sinister and deadly? How about the possibility that Rh-negative blood might simply be a genetic mutation? I think I like the angel theory the best.

I don’t often brood about my blood type. Most people don’t.

The few I asked couldn’t tell me theirs. They thought it was a strange question, which I found to be a strange answer.

Being negative never impacted me in a negative way – until I got pregnant with my first child. Then I had to confront the gruesome reality that if given the chance, my body would turn on the unborn baby and attempt to kill it.

That’s because negative blood and positive blood are like oil and water. They don’t mix. They don’t even like each other. So things can get tricky and downright dangerous when an Rh-negative mama-to-be is carrying an Rh-positive baby, which I did –

four times. If the blood from the fetus mixes with the blood from the mother, wham! Attack mode.

The mother’s body sees the baby as a foreign entity – or alien – and tries to get rid of it.

Luckily for us negative types a drug was invented in the late 1960s to prevent a mom’s body from destroying the baby. I got poked with a needle a couple extra times during each pregnancy so I – and my babies – were safe.

Certain traits are rumored to correlate with Rh-negativity – some more interesting than others. People without the factor are thought to have an increased capacity for empathy and even psychic abilities. I wouldn’t have predicted that. Their body temperature is lower than their positive peers. They cannot be cloned, so you might see my doppelganger, but never my cloned twin.

According to highly scientific Internet wisdom, people abducted by aliens are more likely to be Rh-negative. I better start locking my bedroom door at night.

There are a few positives related to being negative. Folks without the factor have a natural resistance (but not immunity) to HIV, smallpox and the bubonic plague.

I guess I can finally quit worrying about succumbing to black death.

Whew!

Scientists are interested in how Rh-negative came to be and why.

Is there an advantage or disadvan-

tage to being Rh-negative? If you asked me I’d say it’s a little of both. Disadvantage during pregnancy. Advantage toward plagues.

Add to that a probable propensity for leadership. Since the Rh factor was identified mid-last century, the website rhesusnegative.net reports U.S. Presidents with Rh-negative blood include Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan, George W. Bush, Clinton and Obama. British royals Queen Elizabeth, Princes Charles, Wil-

liam and Harry are also part of the club. As was Princess Diana.

That’s quite a group.

I guess I’m in pretty good company then. Perhaps my glass is half full after all.

Willowbrook music students perform in Toronto

From March 2 - 6, the 45-member Willowbrook Concert Choir toured Toronto with eight chaperones, Music Department Chair Karyn Wolcott and Athletic Director Bob Daly.

The students performed concerts at Casa Loma, St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica and The Cathedral Church of St. James and took part in a clinic at University of Toronto. When not performing, the students visited Niagara Falls (Canadian side), Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario and enjoyed two live productions. Villa Park resident Mary Reedy O’Connor has been named the Woman of the Year by the St. Alexander Council of Catholic Women. She and Joyce Splan, president of Mary Reedy the St. Alexander CCW will be honored at a Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Joseph M. Siegel, Auxiliary Bishop of Joliet at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet on Saturday, April 29, along with the Women of the Year and Parish CCW Presidents throughout the Diocese of Joliet. The theme of the Mass along with the luncheon is “Kindness Begins with Me”.

Mary has lived in Villa Park her entire life, marrying her husband, Kevin, and raising 4 children (and now 9 grandchildren). She works as a Realtor in the family’s business started by her grandfather, Jack Reedy in 1928.

Her involvement with many aspects of St. Alexander parish are almost too numerous to mention (Mary says she “likes to be busy!), but all will be included when she is honored by the parish at the spring luncheon at Allegra Banquet on Saturday, April 22, and again the next day, Sunday April 23, at the 8:30 a.m.

Mass. Her large family and many friends will have ample opportunity to congratulate her at that time.

Six Willowbrook students have qualified to compete in the SkillsUSA Illinois State Leadership & Skills Conference, which will take place from April 27 to 29 in Springfield.

IC Catholic Prep softball coach Frank Reaber has a nice problem on his hands that most coaches wish they had.

Reaber has almost his entire starting lineup back from a 2016 team that won 16 games.

That list includes seniors Kaitlyn Falduto (SS) and Molly Fahey (OF), juniors Josie Lytton (C) and Georgia Mahnke (1B), along with sophomores Kayla Faber-Cournane (P), Kayla Cervantes (OF) and Natalie Murillo (2B).

Key newcomers include freshmen Dani Murillo (3B), Allesandra Eccardt (OF-DH) and Brooklyn Campos (OF).

Reaber likes his team’s potential on offense. “The girls can really hit,” he said.

“With all the girls we have coming back we will be a better hitting team.”

And having Faber-Cournane back on the mound after her freshman season on the varsity is another key positive for the Knights.

“Kayla starting as a pitcher as a freshman and now being a sophomore is a big deal,” said Reaber. “She has gained speed. She’s faster than last year.”

Reaber said his team learned plenty from last year’s campaign. “We were so young last year that we had nine or 10 games where we led in the sixth inning and lost because of inexperience.”

A key for the Knights will be their progress on the defensive end. “We’re still young and

we’re working hard to limit our errors,” said Reaber. “We made a lot of errors last year and hopefully we will be a lot better defensively this year. We’re doing a lot of fundamental work.”

Reaber sees plenty of potential with this group. “We absolutely have the opportunity to be better,” he said. “I think we are going to have a pretty good year. If our pitching with Kayla continues to progress and we can play defense, I know we will be able to hit the ball. We had three freshmen starting last year who are now sophomores and are even better.

They should be ready and consistent.”

Reaber knows his team will have to work hard in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division.

“Glenbard South always is good in our conference,” said Reaber. “We are pretty good too. A lot of people don’t realize we are the smallest school in the conference and play in that upper bracket. Glenbard South and Riverside-Brookfield always are good in our conference.”

IC Catholic Prep is embarking on a spring break trip this week to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where it will get a heavy dose of Ohio-based schools during its five games there. “The smallest school we play has 2,100 kids,” Reaber said. “It will be a great experience for the girls. They will see some very good competition. Last year there we played six games and went 1-3 on the varsity and 0-2 at the JV level and every team was twice as big as us.”

District 88 holds All-Youth Relay for Life Willowbrook and Addison Trail recently showed giving back is a cornerstone of District 88 pride.

On March 18, 500 District 88 students, staff and community members filled the field house at Willowbrook to raise money for the American Cancer Society during the Relay For Life of District 88 All Youth. Participants enjoyed dancing, yoga, Zumba,

karaoke, games, a moon jump and more. There also was a luminaria to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. The event raised $63,000 for the American Cancer Society (that total also includes donations raised through Facial Hair February – see below for more details).

The team that raised the most money was INVINC18LE, with $9,700.

WBHS raises $64,500 with its own activities

Willowbrook has hosted events throughout the school year to raise money for the American Cancer Society, including “Go Pink” events for breast cancer awareness, Facial Hair February and the Brook Olympics.

In October, the school hosted a variety of events to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Through those efforts, WBHS raised about $500.

This year, 17 male faculty and staff members participated in Facial Hair February, where they gave up shaving for the month of February.

A bracket was used for students to determine the winner of Facial Hair February, and this year’s winner is Social Studies Department Chair Pete Montgomery. Facial Hair February participant Neil Wahlgren (math teacher) collected $1,200 in donations, which went toward the Relay For Life total.

Brook Olympics is a weeklong series of events and challenges created to enhance tradition and class spirit and pride at WB. Fenton girls soccer team bolstered by talented performers

Willowbrook baseball team optimistic Warriors coming off strong summer campaign

While the summer high-school baseball team doesn’t carry huge weight, success during that timeframe does tend to give a look into the proverbial crystal ball that is the spring season.

On that note, the Willowbrook baseball team advanced to a summer regional championship game last year on the heels of winning 19 games and finishing in third place in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with 10 wins last spring.

“We lost to Oak Park in extra innings in the summer regional championship game,” noted Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner. “The summer doesn’t mean a lot. We’re going to be young with a lot of sophomore pitchers who did a great job for us.”

In terms of veteran returners, the Warriors welcome back three-year starter Kyle Ferguson at 2B, MJ Ranieri at shortstop and Jon Kelso in center field. All three started last season.

Other key returners include Ben Espinoza (LF), Trevor Jaloszynski

(RF), Dan Gusel (C) and Alec Michaelson (P). Jaloszynski logged time at the varsity level last year as a freshman. Gusel split time behind the plate last year while Michaelson went 5-0 in the summer and projects as the team’s No. 1 pitcher.

Also back is senior reliever Will Hines.

Those three sophomore pitchers Wisner spoke of are Ryan Mintz, Jack Nilles and Jack Hines.

“We have a lot of young pitchers that stepped up in the summer,” said Wisner. “The summer is a little more relaxed. We will see what happens when the full pressure is on. The big thing is you wouldn’t know these guys are sophomores when they practice with how well they carry themselves and how well they play.

Our pitching always has been very good. This is the youngest staff I’ve had, but these three sophomore guys could be Division I college quality as they continue to grow.”

But Wisner added the Warriors will need contributions throughout its pitching staff, especially with the new IHSA rules regarding pitch-

count limitations this spring.

“Lots of guys are going to have to throw with the pitch count,” he said.

“We’re going to need help from guys like Scott Kohrt and Vince Ruchala.

It’s going to be a total staff effort. If our guys throw the ball well we are going to be in good shape.”

Wisner’s squad once again will get after it in the intangibles department at the plate.

“They play small ball and do the little things like moving runners along,” he said. “They work hard and they are super competitive. These guys got on a roll in the summer and they expected to win.

That’s a big strength when they go out there. They feel like they have a chance every game. We don’t have anybody that is going to hit the ball out of the park on a consistent basis.

We have guys that can put the ball in play and run the bases well. We are good at manufacturing runs.”

Wisner likes how the team shapes up defensively, particularly up the middle.

“We will be strong up the middle” the coach said, “Kyle Ferguson at

second, MJ at short and Jon Kelso in center will help. Jon can run with anybody and will go get every ball.

We’re excited about our potential on defense. We’re putting a big focus on defense. We are tracking errors every day.”

The coach stressed the WSC Gold will be competitive as always.

“Addison Trail has some young juniors who were really good and they are good on defense,” said Wisner. “Hinsdale South is always good. Paul (Hinsdale South coach Hoel) always has them going. One of the teams I would watch out for is Morton. They had only one senior playing last year and I thought they were really good when we played them.”

The WSC Gold baseball schedule has changed this year, eliminating the Saturday doubleheader and replacing it with a Monday-Tuesday-Thursday three-game series.

“You play one game and then you have to regroup and come right back and play another,” said Wisner.

“We’re looking forward to the new schedule.”

Both experience and talent are on the side of the Fenton girls soccer team this spring.

Veteran coach Victor Ruiz has a number of key performers back from a Bison team that won six games and tied two others last year.

That list of returners includes senior defender Lizbeth Reyes, junior midfielder Maria Lara, junior forward Mia Clavelli, junior forward Giselle Vargas and sophomore midfielder Natalie Diaz.

Reyes, a team captain, was an all-Metro Suburban Conference West Division selection in 2016, while also earning Fenton team MVP honors and the Lions Banquet top athlete accolade.

Lara, also a team captain, scored eight goals and had 12 assists on her way to an all-MSC West selection.

Clavelli, a team captain as well, registered 10 goals and had five assists and was rewarded with an allMSC West pick as a sophomore.

Both Vargas and Diaz had four goals as a sophomore and freshman on the varsity respectively in 2016.

Newcomers to the team include Jazline Barriga (midfield), Yuliza Ibarez (defender), Cindy Mendoza (defender), Andrea Garcia (forward), McKayla Garcia (forward), Patty Acosta (goalie), Katherine Cervantez (goalie) and Sofia Gonzalez (midfield). Mendoza is a sophomore, while Barriga and Ibarez both are freshmen.

Ruiz said the middle of the field will be a key calling card for the Bison this season. “The midfield will be our strength along with three returning defenders,” he said.

The coach added increasing the goals scored output this season is a key goal. “We will be looking to cap more goals in the net and finish. Last year we didn’t capitalize on opportunities.”

Ruiz said the Bison have some goals in the MSC Blue and beyond.

“We are looking to compete in conference and finish in the top three,” he said. “The girls are working hard to make sure we move on and get past the first round of the playoffs.”

what we are working on right now,” said Kennedy. “Our pitching and our defense are our strengths. We have to find ways to generate runs. A lot of our guys have noticed this is an area of need for us. They have focused on improving themselves at the plate and improving their approach. We need to manufacture and generate runs. We don’t need four hits in a row to get runs. If we can generate runs and move runners around, we’ll be fine. We have good speed and we have a bunch of guys who are unselfish and are committed to doing that.”

Kennedy said the potential is there for his team to have a strong season.

“We expect to be better,” he said.

“We don’t hope, we expect. We expect to open peoples’ eyes. We want to be right in the conversation at the end of the season with the conference title on the line. We want to put ourselves in a position to compete for a conference title at the end of the year.”

Willowbrook baseball team starts season with 3-0 mark

The Willowbrook baseball team had a fruitful first week of action.

The Warriors opened the season with non-conference wins against Naperville North, Glenbard South and Schaumburg.

In a 6-2 non-conference win against Naperville North, the Warriors overcame a 2-1 first-inning deficit by scoring two runs in the fourth and three in the sixth inning.

Jon Kelso went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Trevor Jaloszynski went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jack Hines had a hit and two RBI. Jaloszynski had two doubles, while Kelso also had a double.

Alec Michaelson was the winning pitcher. He went four innings and allowed three hits and one earned run, while striking out seven. Vince Ruchala pitched two innings of hitless ball and Will Hines pitched the seventh and fanned two to earn the
