Library receives grant to promote family literacy The Villa Park Public Library has announced that it will be receiving a $2,500 Multitype Collaborative Grant from RAILS (Reaching Across Illinois Library System).

The grant will help fund a col-

laborative effort between the library and School District 45’s North School LRC that will establish a parent program titled “The Latino Family Literacy Project”.

In the grant proposal, staff members Kandice Krettler and Ruth Ebbinghaus highlighted the need for a family literacy program in Villa Park. The goal of this program is to establish family reading

routines for Spanish-speaking parents and their children.

The grant will fund the purchase of bilingual picture books for the school, a curriculum guide for grades 1-4, literacy kits, as well as staff training. A finale celebration

at the library is planned for all participants.

Library staff worked with North School’s Principal Fred Leinweber, Assistant Principal Joe Ritchie and LRC Specialist Sandi Henderson to establish this pilot project.

Politically speaking, Villa Park’s Chuck Pickerill could be described as an outsider. The 62-year-old business owner has never run for office, but that’s changing this year, as he has entered the race for Villa Park Village President. Pickerill will run against two other candidates—Trustee Albert Bulthuis and Trustee Robert Taglia—in the April 4 election.

Current Villa Park Village President Deborah Bullwinkel, whose four-year term expires this spring, announced recently she will not run for re-election. The deadline for candidates to enter the upcoming election passed on Dec. 19. Bullwinkel won a seat on the village board as a trustee in 2009. Four years later, in the spring of 2013, she was elected village president.

“I’ve been wanting to run for awhile,” said Pickerill in explaining his decision to enter the campaign.

“I just decided that at this point in my life I have some time to devote to it. I want to see if I can step up and help make Villa Park better. I’d like to bring some new blood to the village board. Some new blood has to come in.”

As a resident of Villa Park, Pickerill is no outsider. He’s lived in the village for over 55 years—since he was 5 years old. He attended St. Alexander School from grades one through eight and graduated from Willowbrook High School. He and his wife Karen raised their six children in the village. He’s coached several youth athletic teams, and for several years he helped run the Tri-Town YMCA Indian Guides program. Tri-Town YMCA serves Villa Park, Lombard and Oakbrook Terrace. The Indian Guides program, now known as the Y Adventure Guides, offers a variety of activities boys and their fathers.

Pickerill’s late father—Charles Pickerill—spent several years with the Villa Park Fire Department, including about 13 years as the village’s fire chief. Charles Pickerill, who passed away in 2009, started Charley’s Auto Service, located at 149 W. St. Charles Road, in 1957.

Chuck Pickerill began working with his father in 1973 and purchased the business from him in the mid-1980s.

About six years ago, Chuck Pickerill split the business, selling the portion located on St. Charles Road and relocating Charley’s Auto Service to 225 W. Roosevelt Road. Pickerill’s Villa Park business currently shares the same building with Lucky Motors on the south side of Roosevelt. Pickerill’s business mainly deals in truck rentals, including U-Haul rentals. As a U-Haul dealer, Pickerill’s business also sells boxes and moving supplies.

“My main reason for getting involved is the business aspect,” said Pickerill in explaining his decision to run for village president. “I feel like the existing businesses in Villa Park are kind of forgotten, and not

enough attention is paid to them. It seems like the village is out to promote new businesses moving in. The core businesses that are already here are an afterthought.”

In stating what he sees as Villa Park’s major challenges, Pickerill referred to several items, including the condition of the village’s two aging public pools, the need for a new community center and the condition of Villa Park’s youth baseball fields.

“We pay enough taxes here,” he said. “Something’s got to be done.

Everything in this town is old; it hasn’t been upgraded for years and years.”

In addition to owning the business on Roosevelt Road, Pickerill is a builder. He said he’s built approximately 200 homes, including more than 30 homes in Villa Park.

“When I set out to do something, I do it,” he said. “I set a goal and achieve the goal.”

Pickerill said he is not aligned with any political party, and that he never votes straight Republican or Democrat. He said one of his biggest pet peeves is the large number of vacancies on the village’s various commissions that consist of resident volunteers.

“I’ve never seen so many vacancies,” he said. “No one went out and aggressively tried to fill those positions.”

Pickerill will kick off his campaign by holding a meet-and-greet event for residents tonight—Jan. 12—from 6:30–9 p.m. at Dominick’s Pizza and Pasta, 139 W. St. Charles Road. He said the event is not a fundraiser.

“I’m going to have a couple of events, make appearances and knock on doors,” said Pickerill in detailing some of his campaign plans. While he looks forward to meeting new people, Pickerill noted that he is already acquainted with a multitude of Villa Park residents and business owners.

“You don’t stay in one place for almost 60 years without getting to know a lot of people,” he said.

Villa Park Village Trustee Robert Taglia has served on the village board for the last eight years. He’s running to remain on the board as village president.

Taglia is one of three candidates in the race for village president in the election of April 4. He’s facing fellow Villa Park Trustee Albert Bulthuis and village resident Chuck Pickerill. The winner of next month’s election will succeed current Village President Deborah Bullwinkel, who chose not to seek re-election for another four-year term. Villa Park’s next village president will be sworn into office in May. Taglia’s second term as a village trustee ends in May, so if he does not win next month’s election, his time on the board will soon end. Bulthuis was re-elected to a third four-year term on the board in 2015, so if he doesn’t win the upcoming election, he can continue to serve as a trustee for the next two years.

“I have eight years of experience on the board,” said Taglia in discussing his campaign for village president. “I have a good understanding of how the village operates. I know most of the employees on a firstname basis.”

When asked about his achievements as a village trustee, Taglia referred to the hiring of Villa Park Village Manager Rich Keehner. The village board approved Keehner for the position. He became the village manager in April 2011.

“Early on in my first term we hired a professional village manager,” said Taglia. “He had a lot of big challenges to address. He has put the right people in the right places. We’ve had a lot of new businesses come into Villa Park in the last eight years, and we’ve worked closely with existing

Rep. Conroy opposes cuts to Elder-Care Program State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is standing with senior advocates to speak out against the Rauner’s administration’s new rules that will strip care from 40,000 elderly residents currently receiving home care through the Community Care Program. Instead they will be place them in a new and untested program called the Community Reinvestment Program (CRP).

“Thousands of seniors in Illinois rely on the Community Care Program to remain in their own homes safely and comfortably,” said Conroy. “Refunding in-home care will force elderly people and their families to make the difficult decision be-

tween moving to an expensive nursing home and staying in the house without adequate care, putting them at risk of getting hurt. The health and safety of our seniors should be a priority to Governor Rauner’s, not an option.”

Senior advocates including AARP and the Illinois Association of Community Care Program home care providers have expressed concern that CRP lacks the standards and requirements that are critical to seniors’ health and security, while creating new layers of government bureaucracy.

The administrations’ draft rules for CRP remove regulations that cur-

rently require caregivers to undergo criminal background checks. Under the Community Care Program, companies are carefully screened to confirm they do not have a history of scams or fraud, and that all employees in contact with seniors do not have criminal or sexual convictions.

This critical safeguard is removed under CRP. Rauner’s Department on Aging is using an administrative rule making progress to advance their plan without getting approval or input from the legislature. Conroy is urging residents to call the Department on Aging at 800-252-8966 and speak out against the proposed cuts.

Harmon: If Rauner can’t manage payroll, no wonder state budget is a mess Senator Don Harmon, an Oak Park Democrat and president pro tempore of the Illinois Senate, issued the following statement regarding revelations about mismanagement of contract paperwork by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office and hiding the source of deputy governor Leslie Munger’s $138,000 yearly salary: “Now that it’s come to light that Gov. Rauner can’t manage his payroll records correctly, I find it even more clear why he’s been unable to manage a state budget for two years.

“Gov. Rauner has the right to hire whatever staff he believes he needs to properly run his administration, even in this period of historic fiscal distress for state government. But surely he can understand the terrible impression it creates when he hides a six-figure salary in state accounts designated for paying medical providers who have been waiting months for payments from the state of Illinois.

“The governor pledged to be transparent and to manage the state’s affairs better than his predecessors. He’s failing.”

District 88 Board of Education honors business partners During its March 6 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education, along with the District 88 Administration, recognized Knights of Columbus Damen Hildebrand Council No. 650, Knights of Columbus Juan Pablo II Council No. 14069 and Anyway’s restaurant as Business Partners for their support of Addison Trail and Willowbrook high schools.

The Knights of Columbus councils have supported District 88 students through initiatives such as generously donating to the Best Buddies club at Addison Trail, which focuses on enhancing the lives of people who have an intellectual disability, the District 88 LIFE Transition Program and the Transition Program’s Perks & Possibilities Café.

That program helps individuals ages 19 to 21 who have disabilities learn life skills, obtain job training in a community setting and transition to life after District 88. The Perks & Possibilities Café is one of the program’s job-training sites and is located inside the Addison Public Library.

Anyway’s also serves as a job-training site for Transition Program students and has provided gift certificates for District 88 Foundation and Partnership for Inspired Education (PIE) Foundation events as well. Anyway’s also provides gift certificates for our students who receive the 88’s Best award, which honors 18 students each school year for reaching their personal best in academics, highly improved performance, extracurricular activities,

service work or performing arts/ electives.

Conroy legislation helps children with autoimmune disorder Continuing her work with local parents to help children suffering from a rare autoimmune condition, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) passed legislation out of a House committee last Tuesday that would ensure families of children diagnosed with Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections and Pediatric Acute Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANDAS/PANS) have access to health insurance coverage.

“When faced with a complex disease and expensive treatment options, families should not be forced to endure significant financial hardship in order to provide their child with the treatment they desperately need,” Conroy said. “This bill is an important step in ensuring that children suffering from PANDAS/PANS have access to the resources necessary for recovery.”

House Bill 2721 requires insurance companies to offer coverage for PANDAS/PANS treatment. Conroy has been working with Kate Grobe Drury of Lombard and Wendy Nawara of Naperville for the past three years after learning of their children’s PANDAS/PANS diagnoses.

“Kate and Wendy’s tireless advocacy on behalf of their children has made Illinois a leader in raising awareness about this debilitating diagnosis,” Conroy said. “I am heartened by today’s vote and remain optimistic about passing this legislation with support from Democrats and Republicans alike in both chambers so that these kids have the opportunity to recover.”

Library, sewer funding referendum questions on the ballot

Villa Park voters will have more to decide on at the polls on April 4 than who the best choices are for Trustee or which of three candidates will be the next Village President. Two referendum questions that impact taxes are also on the ballot.

The Villa Park Library is seeking a bond issue in the amount of $10.6 million to fund repairs, maintenance and an addition to the current building. The bonds would be repaid via a property tax increase. The second question seeks voter approval for a one-half cent increase in sales tax, with revenue generated used to pay for sewer separation, wastewater and flooding infrastructure repairs and replacement under Villa Park streets.

“The sales tax increase is the least painful way to fund the repairs,” said Trustee Chris Aiello. “Much of the (taxes) are paid by people from out of town that shop in Villa Park.”

Critics of the proposed sales tax increase argue that businesses in Villa Park are less competitive when higher taxes are charged at local stores. A similar sales tax increase ballot question was up for consideration during the Nov. 2016 General Election and was rejected by voters 4,818 to 4,498.

“That was a close vote,” Aiello said. “Considering the alternatives, (Village) staff felt another chance was warranted.”

One alternative to funding the infrastructure without a sales tax increase is doing nothing to improve the sewers under several streets that are being replaced or repaired with money from a $23 million bond issue approved for such purposes by voters in 2015. Those funds cannot be used for underground improvements, just for the streets. The best time to fix the water mains, sewers and improve flood control is when the streets are already being fixed, according to the

Village Dept. of Public Works. Other funding ideas include increased fees for various services. The Village already has increased water bills as one-half of the funding solution, with the sales-tax increase being counted on to fund the other half.

Bond issue to renovate library The other ballot question facing voters on April 4 seeks a bond issue to rehab the Villa Park Library.

“The library was built in 1969, with only moor upgrades done in 1997,” reads an informational flyer sent to Villa Park residents, “The 48year-old building needs significant repairs.”

Besides being non-ADA compliant, the building located at 305 S. Ardmore Ave. requires structural work on the exterior, a new roof and drain system, plumbing, water, electrical and HVAC systems, fire sprinklers and an enlarged relocated elevator.

Homes with a $250,000 market value would see an approximate increase in property taxes of $9.54 per month.

Critics of the proposal counter that libraries are a legacy amenity that are used less and less, owing to the ubiquitousness of technology that brings information to people via phone, computer and tablets. The most recent figures for library usage (according to the Library): 221,908 total visits to the library in fiscal year 2016. More than 500 programs for

adults and kids were hosted with attendance of about 8,500 at those programs. Nearly 300,000 items were checked out at the library during that time. For more information, the library will host the last ‘Community Engagement Drop-In Meeting’ on Saturday, March 18 from 10 am to 12 noon.

The full ballot question for voters reads: “Shall bonds in an amount not to exceed $10,600,000.00 be issued by the Village of Villa Park, DuPage County, Illinois for the purpose of paying costs of remodeling, improving and building an addition to the existing Villa Park Public Library building, furnishing equipment and acquiring library materials such as books, periodicals, films and recordings and electronic data and storage facilities therefor, and paying expenses incidental thereto, said bonds bearing interest at a rate not to exceed 6% per annum?”

Willowbrook presents spring play

On March 16, Willowbrook will present its spring play, “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” by Jim Cartwright.

The show takes place in the early 1990s in Northern England and tells the story of Little Voice, a shy girl who’s struggling to discover her confidence and finds comfort in listening to her late father’s old record collection alone in her room. It’s there where she practices and perfects impersonating famous singers such as Shirley Bassey, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. When her overbearing mother, Mari, begins dating smalltime talent agent Ray Say, he tries to use Little Voice to make it to the “big time.” But Little Voice just wants to share a quiet, simple life with someone who loves her. The dramatic comedy follows the characters as they each strive to get what they want.

“I absolutely love the story and the characters,” Willowbrook Theatre Director Regina Wathier said about why she chose “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.” “Each person is desperate in his or her own way, and I found that compelling.”

She added the cast and crew will compete in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Sectionals on March 18 at Reavis High School in hopes of qualifying to the IHSA Drama & Group Interpretation State competition on March 24 and 25.

“This production is very intricate and requires more attention in all aspects – lighting, sound, set, etc. – than any other play I’ve brought to competition,” Wathier said. “It has been a lot of

work, but we’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Playing Little Voice is junior Julia Cicero. She said it has been a fun challenge to use her experience and skills in musical theatre to make her voice sound like a variety of well-known singers. Cicero also had to learn a Yorkshire accent for the part.

“At the heart of the story is the theme of finding your true identity,” Cicero said. “It’s about Little Voice’s journey as she grows into herself.”

And a character who helps Little Voice on her journey is Billy (played by junior John DeAngelo). Billy is an electrician who works on lighting during Little Voice’s performances, and a burgeoning romance develops between the two.

Junior Genevieve Corkery plays Mari, whom Corkery described as “funny and outspoken, yet tragically jealous and full of insecurities.” Corkery said this play has truly expanded her skills and stretched her to improve as an actor.

Senior Anthony Clampit, who plays Ray Say, agreed.

“What I enjoy about this show is its complexity – the characters and storyline are very deep,” Clampit said.

“The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” will be performed Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at Willowbrook High School.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children ages 3 to 12, $3 with an Activity Pass and are free with a District 88 Senior Gold Card. Tickets can be bought at the door, and the box office will open at 6 p.m.

Brook Olympics return to Willowbrook March 13-17 Willowbrook is gearing up for its 2017 Brook Olympics, which will take place from March 13 to 17.

During the Brook Olympics, classes go head to head in a weeklong series of events and challenges, with the hope of their class being named as the champion. For every event that takes place, a gold medal earns three points, a silver medal earns two points and a bronze medal earns one point. A culminating assembly will take place on March 17. The Brook Olympics, a vision of teacher and coach Matt Scott, were created to help initiate tradition and a sense of class spirit and pride at Willowbrook.

Not only do the Brook Olympics bring tradition, spirit and pride to Willowbrook, they also support the

American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of District 88 All Youth.

Taglia said some of the important issues facing the village include road, sewer and storm water management projects, the need for a new community recreation center and addressing the condition of the village’s two public swimming pools. Lufkin Pool and Jefferson Pool reportedly require significant renovation and repair work, according to recent studies of both facilities.

“We have our challenges, that’s for sure,” Taglia said. “I really want to focus on resolving our issues with the pools, and I want to look into bringing a comprehensive type of community recreation building to the village. We need a more modern facility for the people of Villa Park.

Taglia said he would also like to address the village’s pension funding for police officers and firefighters. He also wants to focus on adding to the fire department’s minimum-staffing levels.

Taglia, who spent part of his childhood in Villa Park, returned to the village 15 years ago, when he and his wife Kimberly bought their first house.

Kimberly is currently serving her first term on the District 45 School Board.

Last year, the Taglias and their three children moved to a newer home in the village, six blocks east of their first house.

Taglia has a small staff working on his campaign for village president. He plans to spend the next month meeting face-to-face with as many Villa Park voters as possible.

“The next month will be a busy month of walking and knocking doors, and making phone calls,” he said. “If people are serious about considering you as a candidate, they want to meet you and talk to you in person. The people here want to know their candidates.

They are passionate about Villa Park, and so am I.” Taglia works on the instructional staff in the engineering school at Northwestern University in Evanston.

He teaches design and prototyping at the university’s Segal Design Institute.

“I trust the people to make the best decision; I know they have good judgment,” said Taglia of the pending election. “I’m very proud of my record on the board of trustees. I’ve always done my job as a trustee honestly. This board has had its differences, but we have worked pretty well. I have deep respect for this board.”

Addison Trail boys basketball team concludes successful season Blazers advanced to regional title game; Williams named all-conference

When it was all said and done, the Addison Trail boys basketball team had itself a successful 2016-2017 season.

The Blazers went 18-12 overall and advanced to a Class 4A regional-championship game. In the playoffs, Addison Trail defeated Waubonsie Valley 50-43, downed District 88 neighbor Willowbrook 8167 and then lost 71-51 to Naperville North in the regional title game.

Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons was pleased with how his team came away with a victory against Waubonsie Valley.

“We hung in there against Waubonsie Valley,” said Lyons. “It was

not our best game. We didn’t shoot it well, but we played good enough defense to keep us in the game. We had the lead most of the game. It must have been nerves being the first round of the playoffs. We were able to get through it and get the win.”

Michael Williams led the Blazers with 13 points. Mike Pudlo had 11 points, while Breydon Hargrove and Bobby Daniels each had 10 points.

Addison Trail led Willowbrook 33-6 at one point in the regional semifinals.

“Against Willowbrook we played one of our better games of the year,” said Lyons. “We jumped out on them early and played well offensively. When they tried to get back

into it with their pressure, we kept them at arm’s distance the rest of the way. In the first half we had a lot of energy and were active. We had built a big enough cushion to hang on against them.”

Williams had 26 points in the game, while Hargrove had 18 points.

Jack Kalbas added 15 points. Colton Noel had 12 points in his first game back coming off an injury. Daniels added 10 points.

In the regional final, Addison Trial led 29-27 at halftime. “We had a bad third quarter,” said Lyons. “We got outscored 26-8 in the third quarter. They wore us down over the course of the game. They are big and strong and we gave up some second-chance points. We weren’t

Warriors set program high for most wins—finish 24-5

Simply put, the Willowbrook boys basketball team had a record-breaking 2016-2017 season.

The Warriors set a new program record for most wins in a season after turning in a 24-5 campaign. In addition, Willowbrook shared the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title—the team’s second conference title in three years.

Willowbrook also won all three regular-season tournaments it played in at Thanksgiving, Christmas and over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.

“We won the Thanksgiving tournament, the Christmas tournament, the Martin Luther King tournament, shared the conference title and had the most wins in program history.

It was a very successful season,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “We didn’t finish the way we would have liked, but for four months we competed at a high level and won a ton of games.”

Willowbrook lost to District 88 neighbor Addison Trail in a Class 4A regional semifinal game to close out its season.

“We were cold in the first quarter and Addison Trail came out on fire,” said Perkins.

“It was 20-4 in the first quarter. They shot the lights out. We won the second, third and fourth quarters, but we were already down by 16 points. It’s tough to play a team three times and it’s definitely tough to beat a team three times (Willowbrook won the two regular-season conference meetings).”

Matas Masys led the Warriors with 16 points against Addison Trail. Freddie Clay had 13 points, while Iman Reynolds and Sikander Zafar each had eight points. Matthew Myers had seven points.

Perkins saw plenty of progress over a year’s time and attributes that to the team’s success this season.

“There was a lot of growth and a lot of guys took that from last season to this season,” he said. “We were very young last season. We had that growth that all coaches look for but doesn’t always happen. It was there for us and it happened in a major way for us.”

Ethan Schuemer earned a local All-Area award honor this season.

“Ethan was all-conference as a sophomore last year and he continued to progress this season,” said Perkins. “He was our best player this season.”

Willowbrook graduates seven seniors including Clay, Reynolds, Ryan King, Casey King, Will Hines, Andy Shreckengost and Darryl Skinner.

“The seniors will be missed, especially a guy like Freddie Clay,” said Perkins.

“Freddie was a sophomore on the varsity and was part of two conference championships.

All of these seniors left a good mark on the program. They bought in and set the bar high for others classes to follow.”

With many players returning, Perkins said the future remains bright. “We’re definitely excited about next year,” he said. “Our starting lineup returns. We have a lot of guys coming back who played at a high level and we have good players at the lower levels who are going to be able to contribute and help plug in some holes for next season.”

“That’s great for Michael,” said Lyons. “He ended up our leading scorer and our second-leading rebounder. He did a variety of things for us on both ends. He grew up the last two years on varsity. He will play somewhere in college and will have a great career somewhere. He’s definitely on the upswing in terms of the development of his game.”

Addison Trail will graduate nine seniors from this year’s team. “The nine seniors we are losing accounted for 92 percent of our scoring,” said Lyons. “There will be a lot of open job opportunities next year.”

Lyons just completed his 10th year at the helm at Addison Trail.

Gymnastics team looks to continue its successful ways Warriors won WSC Gold last year; Zeffiro returns after statequalifying junior season

The Willowbrook boys gymnastics team is poised to build upon its recent successes.

The Warriors return a number of key performers from a 2016 team that won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title with an undefeated record.

Back for Willowbrook are seniors Baily Heppner (all-around), Zach Zeffiro (vault and floor), Matt Barrantes (pommel horse) and Dylan Leska (vault), along with juniors Matthew Smith (high bar and rings) and Daniel Gonzalez (rings).

Newcomers who will help include sophomores Joel Saldana (high bar, vault, floor), Brendan Bailey (floor, rings, parallel bars), Matt Foley (floor) and Sean Luner (rings).

“We have a strong core group of sophomores who could have an impact on some events,” said Willowbrook coach Caleb Strejc.

But Strejc noted Willowbrook’s key strength is experience.

“We have a good amount of seniors and juniors bring great experience from successful teams the past two seasons either from contributing or being on JV and watching,” he said.

Strejc noted the team’s top events when at full strength should be floor, rings and vault.

“We have guys who can put together floor routines with all the requirements and decent difficulty,” he said. “On vault, we have two flipping vaults and one good twisting vault, which should be our three scores. And on rings we have a lot of consistency and guys who are getting new tricks and a dismount to help boost scores.”

And Strejc feels the team’s biggest advancements thus far have come on the horizontal bar (high bar). “We have some more guys throwing giants now or getting closer, so once those are cleaner and we have some connections, they should be in the routines,” he said.

Event specialization is something Willowbrook is focusing on more this season. “To be successful our guys will need to focus in on events they excel at,” said Strejc. “We need to specialize more this season to boost our score. Also they need to buy into fixing up their form on tricks they have rather than trying to work new stuff a lot.”

Strejc likes the progress returning state qualifier Zeffiro and Heppner are making.

“Keep an eye out for Zach trying to return to state this year for floor and trying to make it on vault as well,” he said. “Also, Bailey should contribute on a lot of events and have a chance to make it to state on parallel bars perhaps.”

Strejc is seeing progress with the younger gymnasts in the program as well. “One thing I really like about the makeup of the team is all the freshmen from last year returned and have worked hard to improve,” he said.

“Being closest in age to the freshmen this year, it gives them an idea of what to strive for. The sophomores making so much progress really should be good motivation for the juniors and seniors to work even harder and not get comfortable where they are at because they could get passed up. It is a good dynamic.”

Strejc said Downers Grove South is the team to beat right now in the WSC Gold. “It looks like Downers South is scoring in the 140s so it will be very difficult to catch them to defend our conference title,” he said. “We will work our best to catch them, but I think an achievable goal would be to beat all the other teams and secure second place.”

Timothy Christian’s LeGrand steps down as boys basketball coach

Will concentrate efforts full-time on middle- and high-school athletic director duties

Timothy Christian’s boys basketball team will have a new leader next season.

Longtime head coach Jack LeGrand recently announced he is stepping down from the position to concentrate all of his efforts on the middle-school and high-school athletics programs at the school. LeGrand also is Timothy Christian Schools’ athletic director for both the middle and high schools.

LeGrand informed the school board’s Extracurricular Committee of his decision last week and also spoke to his staff and players.

“I love coaching and I love the relational aspect, but I want to do the very best I can and at times having the time for both positions can be very difficult,” he said. “I love the kids and the

basketball program is in great shape.

We’re very excited about the players returning for us. There is a great future here.”

LeGrand noted the opening of the school’s new competition arena this fall will bring with it even greater responsibilities.

“There will be more demands and more responsibilities,” he said. “We want to do everything the right way here. It’s going to be a busy job (athletic director) and it’s a job I love doing. I love working with our players, coaches, administration and parents. With this new facility opening, we’re super-excited about the athletic programs at Timothy going forward. We’re going to have the opportunity to host more events. There are so many possibilities with it. We’re going to roll up our sleeves, get to work here and have

some fun. We want excellence for our athletic programs.”

Timothy Christian Schools Superintendent Matt Davidson said LeGrand’s announcement is “a big loss for the basketball program and a huge win for the athletic program.”

“That’s ultimately what led him to that conviction,” Davidson continued.

“We don’t have football here. Our high-profile sport is boys’ basketball and it always has been. It’s a monster job. Jack determined the best thing for his role as athletic director is to spend more time and energy with our athletic programs. Jack is the hardest-working coach we have. It’s a big loss. He’s a man of God and a great example for our boys. I really admire him for the decision he’s made. His motto for the basketball program has been men of integrity. That describes Jack LeGrand

right there.”

LeGrand was the head coach to Timothy for nine years and was former coach Jeff Powers’ assistant prior to that. In nine years, LeGrand amassed a 150-102 record (according to IHSA records). His 2009-2010 team won regional and sectional titles. Timothy teams had winning records in seven of his nine years at the helm, including this year’s squad that went 17-11 and reached a Class 2A regional final.

“I’ve been coaching 28 years and I love it,” he said. “I love the opportunity to coach. It always will be part of you. You can never turn it off. But in some respects later in your career and when you are older, you try and see where you can best serve your talents and needs and I love being the AD of these programs. It will be a different relational aspect working with the

kids, coaches, parents and the community. The coaching staff for basketball is excellent and all the coaches at Timothy are great. I want to be there to help them any way I can.”

Davidson also noted LeGrand’s coaching expertise will not be stored in a closet just because he’s stepped away from the boys’ basketball program.

“It’s bittersweet for Jack,” he said.

“He loves coaching basketball and now he can coach our coaches, so he’s going to continue coaching in that regard.”

LeGrand hopes to have a new boys’ basketball coach in place in short order.

“It will probably go fairly quickly.

We’ll get some interviews going,” he said. “Some guys on our staff may be

Elmhurst native Bieterman headed to Southern Illinois University

Elmhurst native Michael Bieterman’s college baseball selection came into focus rather quickly.

Bieterman, who played his freshman season at Timothy Christian and now is a senior catcher on the Aurora Central Catholic High School team, switched travel teams last fall to the well-known Top Tier organization.

“We got invited to come to a college showcase and then Southern Illinois called me the night after the showcase and I ended up going on a visit after that,” said Bieterman.

And now Bieterman will continue his baseball career at SIU. He noted he also had interest from other Division I schools.

“I went on some other visits and would really like it, but I would get back and I would say, ‘But there is one thing,’ he said. “On the way home from Southern Illinois, I loved it and there was nothing else to say about it.

It was a situation where I couldn’t see myself not being here.”

To say the least, Bieterman is thrilled to have the opportunity to play Division I college baseball.

“This is huge. It’s something I’ve always dreamed about as a kid and as I was getting older and growing in my faith and as an athlete,” he said. “It doesn’t feel real. It’s a huge relief. You don’t know who is going to give you an offer, but you keep going and you work your way through it.

“Going into freshman year of high school, my hope always was to play college baseball. I knew I was capable, but I knew I had to go out and play and put in a lot of hard work. There have been a lot of good times and a lot of mental breakdowns. Going into senior year everything started to come together. The support I’ve received from my parents, my brother, my coaches and the high school has been huge.”

Bieterman said the coaching staff was one of the tipping points for him at SIU. “The coaches are top-of-the-class.

are great guys. I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else. They made me feel like I was part of their family right away. It’s definitely one of the main reasons I’m going there.”

Bieterman transferred to ACC halfway through his sophomore year.

“It’s been great athletic-wise and I’ve grown a lot as a person,” he said. “I get to play for my brother (Sean Bieterman, ACC’s head baseball coach and athletic director), which is a different experience. It’s something most people never get to experience.”

Bieterman enjoys having the opportunity to have his brother as his coach.

Sean Bieterman, a Villa Park resident, is a York graduate and the former head coach at now defunct Driscoll Catholic in Addison. Additionally, he runs the long-standing Elmhurst Baseball and Softball League summer baseball camp.

“I know when I do something wrong he’s going to get on me, but I know he wants me to grow and he’s helped me grow as an athlete and as a person. It’s been great,” he said. “I can’t wait to get this season started. I think we’re going to have a great season and we have the ability to do some great things.”

Bieterman also heaped major praise on his parents, Rick and Sue, for their help over the years.

“I started out in Elmhurst Baseball and Softball League and my parents were my coaches and they’ve helped me out a lot,” he said. “They took the time to help get me better and get me everywhere. They put in a lot of effort and time and money into all of this.

Without my parents, I wouldn’t be where I am.”

Bieterman, who said he plans on majoring in sports management or telecommunications, would like to see how far the sport of baseball can take him.

“I absolutely would love to play beyond college,” he said. “I know that will take a lot more than just reps.

Metra seeks input about potential fare options Metra is seeking input from the public through an online survey to ask what its customers, former customers and prospective customers think about a variety of potential fare and ticket options, including off-peak and reverse-commute pricing, one-day and seven-day passes, loyalty programs and other ideas.

The survey also asks about the ease of understanding Metra’s Ventra App and zone-based fares, and allows respondents to provide additional comments about current fares and how they might be improved to meet their needs.

The survey results will be used to guide Metra’s decision-making regarding changes to fares and fare policies.

Any proposed changes would be

subject to further public comment before being implemented. The study is expected to be completed this summer.

The survey is available online at metrarail.com or surveymonkey. com/r/MetraFareStudy and is available until March 31, 2017.

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane and McHenry counties in northeastern Illinois. The agency provides service to and from downtown Chicago with 241 stations over 11 routes totaling nearly 500 route miles and approximately 1,200 miles of track. Metra operates more than 700 weekday trains, providing about 300,000 passenger trips each weekday.
