By Paul DelGuidice FOR THE INDEPENDENT

When news broke Thursday, March 7 that McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner had been shot and killed, residents of nearby Villa Park could hardly believe it. Keltner was a graduate of Willowbrook High School’s class of 2001. “Jake was a great guy. He was on the [Willowbrook] gymnastics team,” said local attorney Nick Tancredi. “My sons and Jake were in Scouts also.” “His father was a DuPage County Sheriff. Jake had many family and friends in the area. His death is a true tragedy.” The 35-year-old father of two boys was part of a Federal Marshal’s Task Force that was attempting to arrest a fugitive at a Rockford hotel around 9:15 a.m. on March 7. The fugitive, Floyd Brown, fired several shots through the door at deputies before jumping out of a third story window. Allegedly, Brown then shot Keltner in the head with a rifle while running to his car in the parking lot. Keltner died about 3:30 p.m. Incident makes state-wide news After a long car chase on Illinois Highway 55, Brown’s car was rammed off the road by police near the town of Lincoln, about
